00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:11.519
One family on one mission through one cooperative effort.
00:00:11.759 --> 00:00:15.119
You are now listening to the SC Baptist Podcast.
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:19.679
Welcome to the South Carolina Baptist Podcast.
00:00:19.760 --> 00:00:20.800
I'm Tony Wolf.
00:00:20.879 --> 00:00:25.600
I'm your Executive Director Treasurer, and I have with me in the studio today Cliff Marshall.
00:00:25.839 --> 00:00:29.760
Cliff leads our church planning strategies here at the South Carolina Baptist Convention.
00:00:29.839 --> 00:00:32.159
And speaking of strategy, we have a shift coming.
00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:37.920
We're shifting in our strategy, a major announcement that our listeners may or may not have heard of.
00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:42.320
So, Cliff, so that we don't bury the lead, what exactly are we doing here?
00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:44.560
What is this new church planning strategy?
00:00:44.880 --> 00:01:00.320
Yeah, so this exciting new opportunity for us is that our SC Baptist world, we are going to, we have, uh, thanks to our executive board, we have entered into an agreement with the North American Mission Board, specifically the SYN Network.
00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:08.079
And we are now going to join their mission of churches planting churches for everyone everywhere.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:12.079
And obviously, you know we've we've been about that work anyway.
00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:20.719
So for us, the the everyone is all of our folks here in South Carolina that are moving in, that have been here their whole lives.
00:01:20.959 --> 00:01:23.840
The uh everywhere is is South Carolina.
00:01:23.920 --> 00:01:25.760
It's every corner of our state.
00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:33.200
And then the churches that'll be planting those churches are our SC Baptist churches, who have already been doing a great job of that over the last few years.
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:36.879
And this is just going to give us an opportunity to amplify what's already been happening.
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:38.079
And we're very excited about it.
00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:39.359
Yeah, I'm excited about it too.
00:01:39.519 --> 00:01:45.040
Send SC, becoming part of the National SIND Network with our North American Mission Board.
00:01:45.200 --> 00:01:58.000
Uh Cliff, so whenever uh a strategy change like this is announced, and we've been working on this for honestly for years and definitely closely for months, but when a strategy shift like this is announced, people have questions.
00:01:58.159 --> 00:01:58.239
Right.
00:01:58.480 --> 00:02:00.000
Baptist people got questions, Cliff.
00:02:00.159 --> 00:02:02.159
So uh the good news is we have some answers.
00:02:02.239 --> 00:02:08.400
So I just want to answer maybe a few of the most basic questions today that are probably on people's minds.
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:11.360
And let's start with what may be the most obvious question.
00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:14.319
We have a lot of churches in South Carolina already.
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:19.360
So why do we need to plant more churches in South Carolina?
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:19.919
Right.
00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:20.879
Good question.
00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:27.360
Well, obviously the first reason, the most basic reason is we see it biblically and outlined in the book of Acts.
00:02:27.439 --> 00:02:30.000
And it's also foundational of our Baptist theology.
00:02:30.159 --> 00:02:32.319
So we are a church planting people.
00:02:32.400 --> 00:02:40.000
Uh all of these existing churches we have, one thing they have in common is they are all church plants, because at one point they didn't exist and now they do.
00:02:40.240 --> 00:02:42.400
So we want to continue that good work.
00:02:42.639 --> 00:02:49.680
But some practical reasons are lostness is a real problem in South Carolina, even though we're in the middle of the Bible Belt.
00:02:49.919 --> 00:02:59.120
And we know that somewhere around 80% of our population is not meaningfully connected to a church that really teaches the Bible.
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:01.120
And so that's an issue.
00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:08.560
And then, as you know, we've seen historic growth in our state, and we are on the edge of even more growth in our state.
00:03:08.719 --> 00:03:18.159
So our population has increased about a million folks in the last 15 years, and the experts tell us we're looking at a million more in the next 15.
00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:22.080
So you combine this lostness with this historic growth.
00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:28.319
We are at a point where I think the need for new churches has probably never been greater in our state than it is now.
00:03:28.719 --> 00:03:29.280
I agree.
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:32.719
The number one fastest growing state in the Union.
00:03:33.039 --> 00:03:34.080
Yes, for the last couple of years.
00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:36.560
For two years running, at least, South Carolina.
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:41.680
Several of the fastest growing cities and counties in the United States are in South Carolina.
00:03:41.840 --> 00:03:47.680
And a lot of this population growth is coming from vastly unchurched portions of the United States.
00:03:47.840 --> 00:03:49.680
They are coming to our backyards.
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:52.319
So we need to plant more churches.
00:03:52.800 --> 00:04:01.120
So uh churches in cooperation with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, with the other churches in the South Carolina Baptist Convention, they've been planting churches for years.
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:13.360
We've in fact, Cliff, uh, under your leadership over the last eight years here, we've already exponentially increased the number of healthy church plants under funding, I think, to God and also to you for your leadership here.
00:04:13.680 --> 00:04:26.160
So, since honestly, since we're already planting more churches and God is blessing our efforts, why do we need to enter this new relationship with the North American Mission Board to create SIND SC?
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:27.439
What's the benefit here?
00:04:27.600 --> 00:04:28.560
Why are we doing this?
00:04:29.120 --> 00:04:39.439
Well, first of all, we're big fans and believers of the work of the North American Mission Board, and our SC Baptist churches are as well, giving to the Annie Armstrong offering every year.
00:04:39.759 --> 00:04:50.399
And the SYN Network of the North American Mission Board is the premier church planting effort that's going on in our country, uh especially in the Baptist world.
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:50.879
That's right.
00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:53.439
And we want to partner with them for a few reasons.
00:04:53.600 --> 00:05:02.000
One is it's going to shine a national spotlight on South Carolina church planting, probably for the first time, maybe in a long time, or maybe ever.
00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:05.199
We think about planting in South Carolina all the time.
00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:12.079
Me and my team and our SC Baptist team and a lot of our pastors across the state, they they think about it every day.
00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:18.639
But folks in other parts of the country, when they think about the need for church planting, South Carolina may not be on their radar.
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:20.240
We believe that this will help.
00:05:20.399 --> 00:05:22.959
And in fact, it's it seems to already be helping.
00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:26.000
Uh, since the executive board vote, I'm already having folks reaching out.
00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:26.879
That's exciting.
00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:27.920
So that's exciting.
00:05:28.079 --> 00:05:37.120
The other thing is um, just in a very practical sense as well, there's gonna be funding that's gonna be unlocked for us with this agreement that was not unlocked before.
00:05:37.279 --> 00:05:55.120
And so we are still going to need our SC Baptist churches to support the Janie Chapman State Missions offering at a high level, but there will be matching funds made available through SYN Network that is gonna help us to hopefully double the number of funded church plants and more.
00:05:55.279 --> 00:06:12.959
And then on a real, real micro uh you know, practical level, just for our team and the way we do our work, uh, SYN Network has created the best tools and systems for things like planter care and training and tracking progress and things like that that have never been open to us now.
00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:18.720
And we're knee deep right now in the middle of learning all that, and it's gonna help us to be more effective in our work.
00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:19.279
Amen.
00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:27.680
So South Carolina Baptist Churches, whether they know it or not, if they're cooperating, then they're already part of the work of church planning in South Carolina.
00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:28.399
So that's right.
00:06:28.560 --> 00:06:45.759
Uh through their cooperative program giving, they're funding uh an organization, a mechanism here that's Office Out of the State Convention and elsewhere, uh, whereby people, church planning catalysts and employees are actively working with church planners and with church planning churches across the state.
00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:55.120
So they're they're uh funding the salary structure and the organizational mechanisms through the cooperative program, but through Janie Chapman, uh that that extra giving every year.
00:06:55.360 --> 00:07:01.920
I mean, we're getting direct church planning support that goes to church planning churches from Janie Chapman, the WMU.
00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:02.639
So every month.
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:03.519
Every single month.
00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:09.439
So if you're giving through the cooperative program through Janie Chapman, you're already part of the church planning work here in South Carolina.
00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:12.879
But I think the whole point of this is that we have to do more.
00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:14.000
We have to do more.
00:07:14.240 --> 00:07:23.600
So, Cliff, I'm a I'm a pastor at a local church or I'm a layleader at a local church, and I'm watching this podcast or listening, and I'm thinking, man, I want to do more.
00:07:23.759 --> 00:07:24.639
I want to get involved.
00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:28.160
What if God's calling me to plant a church or to be part of a church plant?
00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:31.759
Or what if God's calling our church to plant a church?
00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:33.120
What's my next step?
00:07:33.279 --> 00:07:33.920
What do I do?
00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:36.319
So here's two real practical things.
00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:48.480
And um, one of those is you can go on the SC Baptist webpage and go onto the church planting page, and you'll find there a button uh that says um, you know, find out more.
00:07:48.720 --> 00:08:06.720
You click on that, it'll give you a little form to fill out, and whether you're a potential planter, whether you're just someone who's trying to figure some stuff out, whether you're a uh uh one of our existing church pastors and you want a partner, you fill that out and someone for our team will reach out to you and we'll start a conversation.
00:08:06.879 --> 00:08:09.839
You can also email me anytime you want to do that.
00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:16.800
My email address is C Marshall, C-M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L at synnetwork.com.
00:08:17.360 --> 00:08:23.680
And um, I will reach back out to you as soon as possible, and one of our team members will start a conversation with you.
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:29.360
So those are just real practical ways, and we want to have those, we're having those conversations and we want to have more of them.
00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:30.000
That's right.
00:08:30.160 --> 00:08:37.519
Yeah, we uh we say this all the time uh in our staff and in our building and across the state uh with existing church plants and church planting churches.
00:08:37.679 --> 00:08:39.519
Uh conventions do not plant churches.
00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:40.000
That's right.
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:40.879
We don't.
00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:42.720
Uh churches plant churches.
00:08:42.960 --> 00:08:59.600
And so this is the work of cooperating churches, and we will not plant any more churches in South Carolina unless cooperating churches do the work of giving sacrificially, raising up and releasing church planners and church planning core teams.
00:08:59.759 --> 00:09:02.320
The churches have to plant more churches.
00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:10.320
Our our role, our joy is to help facilitate that uh and increase it exponentially through arrangements and strategies like this.
00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:12.399
But arrangements and strategies are just that.
00:09:12.639 --> 00:09:17.519
You know, we can we can put the best administrative detail into everything we do, and we do.
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:20.080
Uh we can have the best organization, the best structure.
00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:25.279
We can even have buckets of funding, which we don't, by the way, but it would be great if we did.
00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:37.600
We could, and still nothing could happen because uh, unless the Holy Spirit breathes on something, there's no meaningful movement, there's no eternal effect.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:39.200
So we're a praying people.
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:41.679
Uh South Carolina Baptists believe in the power of prayer.
00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:45.360
We believe that God actually cares, He listens, and that He can.
00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:55.440
So uh for some of our listeners who are just thinking, all right, I I may I may be ready to take a step into doing something, either through the website or through your email address.
00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:59.200
But others of us are just thinking, okay, I want to get involved by praying.
00:09:59.279 --> 00:10:00.639
How specifically can I pray?
00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:09.759
Can you give us two or three specific prayer requests that we can lean into as this new strategy agreement uh with Send Network starts to take shape?
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:11.919
Yeah, I would say our top three.
00:10:12.320 --> 00:10:31.519
Number one, we need to pray, beg God that our SC Baptist churches would disciple and train up young men, older men, men to be sent out from their church to plant new churches, to go to across the street and plant a new church or grow across the state to plant a new church.
00:10:31.600 --> 00:10:35.360
It's they're gonna come from our SC Baptist congregations.
00:10:35.440 --> 00:10:37.039
And so that would be the first prayer.
00:10:37.200 --> 00:10:41.759
The second one is for our SC Baptists to live missionally wherever they are.
00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:55.759
Um, all of our folks, I I just am amazed when I think about the number of South Carolina Baptists that are spread out across this state every day in the workplaces, in the schools, on the pickleball courts, on the golf courses, where wherever they are.
00:10:56.000 --> 00:11:06.240
If they will live missionally and think about actively sharing the gospel in all these places where they are, we'll begin to see some things happen that we've probably never seen before and we'll be amazed at.
00:11:06.399 --> 00:11:19.679
And then the last thing, and and maybe you pray this before the second one, but uh that the hearts of South Carolinians, new South Carolinians and lifelong residents, would be convicted over their need for a savior.
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:28.159
Um one of the things we know about the folks that have moved in and the folks that are moving in, most of them aren't coming here because they're looking for a church.
00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:32.320
They mostly are looking for warmer winters and lower taxes and things like that.
00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:34.240
And we got that in South Carolina.
00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:47.039
But what we can do is we can help them to understand that their greatest need was not a nice house on the lake with lower taxes or even being near their grandkids, which is important.
00:11:47.200 --> 00:11:49.120
Their greatest need is a need for a savior.
00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:52.240
But the way that starts is that's got to start in their heart.
00:11:52.320 --> 00:11:55.600
The Holy Spirit's got to do that work, and that's the work that only He can do.
00:11:55.679 --> 00:11:57.759
So pray for pray for that as well.
00:11:58.080 --> 00:11:58.399
Amen.
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:20.799
And you can get involved directly right now by actively praying for these three requests and sharing them with your Sunday school class, your small group, your church family, uh, put them on the screen, do something, and pray with us that that the Holy Spirit would breathe on this new strategy in these very three, three very specific prayer requests areas that Cliff's given us.
00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:25.039
And we know that we've only begun to scratch the surface of answering your questions.
00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:26.879
We are fully aware of that.
00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:40.399
Uh, but as Send SC takes shape over the course of the coming months, look for more information and more very specific information about what it looks like and how you can get involved as we release more and more information over the next two or three months, just throughout the summer.
00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:42.080
Just look for more information.
00:12:42.159 --> 00:12:43.440
Uh and Cliff, thank you.
00:12:43.600 --> 00:12:46.799
Thank you for joining us on the podcast today, and thank you for listening.
00:12:46.879 --> 00:12:49.840
And Cliff, brother, if I hadn't said it enough, I thank God for you.
00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:50.399
Thank you.
00:12:50.559 --> 00:12:51.600
Thanks so much.
00:12:55.039 --> 00:12:57.919
Thanks for listening to the SC Baptist Podcast.
00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:05.360
This SC Baptist resource is made possible through the cooperative program giving of South Carolina Baptist churches.
