ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Your content is getting likes, comments, and shares… so why is your sales pipeline still stressed? I’m unpacking a pattern I see constantly in marketing strategy work with service providers: the fangirl problem. It’s the moment when people know you, like you, and even hype you up, but that attention never becomes demand generation or buyer readiness. Visibility feels good, but it doesn’t automatically create revenue.
We dig into the real job of marketing content across your ecosystem, not just social media. I share how to shift your messaging so it stops sounding like “look at me” and starts sounding like “here’s what this means for you,” while still keeping your personal brand intact. You’ll hear how to help potential buyers make sense of their problem, understand why their current approach isn’t working, and see your offer as a logical next step.
If you’ve been feeling like "SARAH! I have all these ideal clients lurking but they aren't buying!" this episode was recorded just for you.
There are a ton of practical and potent strategies in here for you so that you can immediately take action on identifying exactly where you can make shifts for your business to have the biggest impact in calling these ideal clients forward and getting them to raise their hands to work with you (without you having to push or persuade)
If you want more qualified leads - not just fan girls, hit play, then follow the show, leave a review, and share this with a friend who’s stuck in the visibility trap.

TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:04.799
Being visible is not the same thing as creating demand or buyer readiness.
00:00:04.959 --> 00:00:16.879
You can have people watching and commenting and sharing and telling other people how amazing you are, telling you how amazing you are, while your actual sales pipeline continues to suffer.
00:00:17.039 --> 00:00:20.879
And that's exactly what we're about to go over in this episode.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:31.359
So welcome back to Think Like a CMO, the podcast for entrepreneurs who are ready to stop doing random acts of marketing and to start thinking like the chief marketing officer your business actually needs.
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:32.880
I'm your host, Sarah Gemmel.
00:00:33.039 --> 00:00:42.159
I'm a marketing strategist and consultant helping small business owners to build marketing ecosystems that actually create predictable and reliable results.
00:00:42.399 --> 00:00:55.759
Around here, we talk about what it really looks like to step into your role as the CMO, to start seeing the big picture, to lead your marketing with strategy, and to stop wasting time on productive, busy work that isn't actually getting you anywhere.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:06.640
So buckle up, this is all no fluff, honest conversations, potent strategies, and practical insights that you can use right now to get your marketing working smarter.
00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:14.400
So, right now on any given week, I do about two to four sales calls a week with Perspective Leads.
00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:19.359
We're running about 15 to 20 clients that we support in their marketing at the time of this recording.
00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:29.120
And just in addition to all the conversations I've had with friends and colleagues, and also my own experience with this about four years ago is the fangirl problem.
00:01:29.359 --> 00:01:34.239
The fangirl problem is a common theme coming up in all of these places.
00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:39.519
Client conversations, sales calls, friend conversations, and like I said, I dealt with it.
00:01:39.680 --> 00:01:51.519
The fangirl problem is like people know you, they like you, they follow you, they engage with you, and you get all these comments like I love you, and you're so pretty, and you're so inspirational, and you're so cool.
00:01:51.680 --> 00:01:56.480
But that admiration doesn't automatically turn into a buying decision.
00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:00.879
And you're coming to me and you're like, Sarah, girl, I don't need more fans.
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:06.000
I need more of the right people actually raising their hand to work with me, right?
00:02:06.079 --> 00:02:08.240
Like, I need to actually feed this pipeline.
00:02:08.400 --> 00:02:14.560
This is something that's also near and dear to my heart because I struggled so hard with this about four years ago.
00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:19.039
About four years ago, I randomly packed my shit.
00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:28.719
I packed up my belongings, my cats, my horses, my pickup truck, and I moved from Philly to Georgia without knowing anyone here.
00:02:28.879 --> 00:02:35.680
And when I went through that transition or that move, I also went through a shift in the business where I'm like, you know what?
00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:38.319
I'm really gonna focus on networking.
00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:47.680
And I'm gonna focus on running up a paid networking group, and I'm gonna teach people how to get more referrals and to actually make more money from networking.
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:54.159
It was something that I became really well known for, and people knew me, they loved my perspective on it.
00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:06.639
But one of the things that when I made this shift, one of the biggest things I fought for my life on, okay, not to be dramatic, is the ability to market it successfully.
00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:14.400
I found that like when I did a free workshop where I spoke about it in coffee chats or I spoke about on social media, people ate it up.
00:03:14.639 --> 00:03:21.199
They loved my approach to networking, but on the back end, it wasn't turning into leads or revenue.
00:03:21.360 --> 00:03:30.719
And one thing I had to figure out quickly, okay, because at the time I'm single with no kids, I am 100% responsible for my own bills.
00:03:30.879 --> 00:03:32.319
This is my full-time job.
00:03:32.479 --> 00:03:36.000
I need to figure this shit out because I need to get paid to be able to keep my lights on.
00:03:36.159 --> 00:03:37.199
You feel me?
00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:47.199
And one of the things I had to figure out was how can I go from having fans to actually getting people to make a buying decision?
00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:51.280
Because people who liked what I had to say, they were ideal clients.
00:03:51.439 --> 00:03:56.479
They were people I knew could benefit from what I had to offer, and I knew I could help them.
00:03:56.639 --> 00:04:01.039
I also know they needed, I knew that they needed the help, right?
00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:10.879
So the first and foremost shift is realizing that visibility does not automatically equal demand or buyer readiness.
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:22.079
I actually just recently saw this quote on like TikTok or Instagram, wherever I was in a scroll hole, and it was like visibility and attention equals money.
00:04:22.399 --> 00:04:28.240
And I cringed and my butthole clenched a little bit because that is so not accurate.
00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:33.759
I have seen service providers like go viral online and it doesn't at all feed their pipeline.
00:04:33.920 --> 00:04:38.879
I've seen service providers have a great engaged audience and it doesn't bring them leads or revenue.
00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:42.800
Visibility is the first step, right?
00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:53.680
We do need visibility 100%, but that doesn't automatically mean that they are going to see the value in what we do or be ready to actually buy.
00:04:54.000 --> 00:05:10.879
The difference between the two, the thing that makes attention and visibility turn into actual lead flow is taking someone from I like this person to oh, this person can actually help me solve a problem I'm looking to solve.
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:15.600
So the goal is not to just be seen, it's to create movement.
00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:18.079
The next shift is in your content.
00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:24.639
And we don't talk about content in a way that's just social media, but think about anywhere that you are marketing that requires content.
00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:31.920
So that could be something like blog, podcast, Pinterest, uh, social media, email, anything like that.
00:05:32.079 --> 00:05:40.560
At the end of the day, whatever you create for marketing has to be about the target audience, it has to be about them.
00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:47.120
Something that's really trendy right now in marketing, it has been for the last few years, is this idea of storytelling and personal branding.
00:05:47.279 --> 00:05:48.800
Now there's no butt to that statement.
00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:51.040
Those things are important and they work great.
00:05:51.199 --> 00:05:57.600
But at the end of the day, everything we do has to be related back to them.
00:05:57.759 --> 00:05:58.959
What is their problem?
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:01.040
What is the solution they're looking for?
00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:02.639
What is their daily experience?
00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:15.279
So even when you're sharing your story or your successes, it's less about look at me and here's what I did, and making it more about here's what this means for you.
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:18.720
Your content also needs to help them make sense of their problem.
00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:32.079
I've noticed in just helping at this point over 1500 business owners with their marketing that a lot of service providers are really good at doing this on something like a website or something like a one-to-one conversation with people.
00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:41.680
But the problem is we can't get someone into that conversation or we're not getting the traffic to that landing page without the front-end marketing doing the same thing.
00:06:41.839 --> 00:06:56.639
We need to be able to help them identify what's actually going wrong, helping them to understand why their current approach is not working, helping them to recognize that there is a better way and to see your solution as a logical next step.
00:06:56.879 --> 00:07:01.439
I want you to think about your marketing as a way for people to move through a decision, right?
00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:10.800
So they start with attention, then they become aware, then they start to get a better understanding, then they start to desire the solution, and then they start to take action.
00:07:11.040 --> 00:07:18.560
Your marketing has to feed every single part of that decision-making process, right?
00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:24.160
Your overall marketing ecosystem needs to help them make a decision.
00:07:24.399 --> 00:07:31.360
If all you're doing is creating content that people enjoy consuming, you're creating entertainment, but not necessarily marketing.
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:44.879
And chances are, if you're here, you're not interested in becoming an influencer or a full-time content creator, you are simply only using social media, marketing content, wherever it is you're showing up to actually run a business.
00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:57.439
Once you've done all this, you shifted your content to be more about them, you are having a better understanding of their problem, helping them have a better understanding of their problem and their options for solutions.
00:07:57.680 --> 00:08:02.560
You start to really speak to every single piece of that decision-making process.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:06.000
Now you actually have to guide them somewhere.
00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:15.040
This is something that I see missed so, so, so often is we have to stop thinking that people are just gonna figure out what to do next.
00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:18.079
This idea of like, well, they're grown adults and it's so obvious.
00:08:18.319 --> 00:08:29.839
No, okay, they're consuming so much information on a minute-by-minute basis that we have to tell them exactly what to do next.
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:39.919
And that next thing has to be really, really clear, low friction, low barrier to entry, easy, right?
00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:48.399
It should be a really clear, easy next step, and your call to action from your marketing should tell them exactly what that is.
00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:55.440
Not to mention the fact, okay, that there also has to be a compelling enough reason for them to actually take it.
00:08:55.759 --> 00:09:01.519
The next step has to make sense with whatever the content or the piece of marketing is talking about.
00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:04.720
It has to be something that they're actually gonna want, right?
00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:08.159
And something that they're actually going to take action on.
00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:15.120
People need to understand why they're doing something in order to be more likely to actually do it.
00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:27.360
So whether that's downloading a freebie, filling out an application, DMing you for more information, or getting on a sales call, just to name a few, they have to be really clear on like why am I doing this?
00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:31.679
Now there is a major caveat, okay, to this conversation.
00:09:31.919 --> 00:09:39.200
The caveat is that there will be a segment to your audience of people who are simply not ready.
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:41.200
And that is okay.
00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:48.799
There's things that we can do to increase buyer readiness from our content, but at the end of the day, we can't force people to be ready.
00:09:49.440 --> 00:10:04.879
And the problem is not in the small segment of your audience that's not ready, it's where the problem comes in if you feel like everyone is not ready, or that a majority of your audience are the people who are not ready.
00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:15.600
That's where you have to take a look at whether your marketing is actually doing its job to turn that visibility into demand and buyer readiness.
00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:18.399
Your job is not to force them, right?
00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:20.399
Or to convince them.
00:10:20.799 --> 00:10:31.759
Your job is to facilitate the decision, to give the information, to show your value, to show your expertise, and let them make the decision.
00:10:31.919 --> 00:10:37.120
You're guiding them there with how you strategically show up in your marketing.
00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:44.720
But that's a really important thing that we have to really check in with ourselves about is it's okay for people to not be ready.
00:10:44.879 --> 00:10:48.399
A common thing I see this in is any kind of health and wellness industry.
00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:50.639
Okay, like personal trainers.
00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:56.000
There's gonna be a segment of your audience who's not ready to lose weight, they're not ready to take action on that.
00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:03.200
If you're a chiropractor, you're gonna have a segment of your audience who's not ready for long-term preventative maintenance care.
00:11:03.440 --> 00:11:10.000
It's just that those people should only make up a small segment of your audience and not the majority of your audience.
00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:12.080
That's the biggest distinguisher.
00:11:12.320 --> 00:11:16.559
So if you've made it this far and you're like, yes, Sarah, I have a fangirl problem.
00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:23.679
People know me and they like me and they engage, and I know I'm getting the visibility and I'm getting the engagement on my content, all these things, right?
00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:25.200
People are watching.
00:11:25.679 --> 00:11:31.279
You don't necessarily need to stop creating the content that is getting the attention.
00:11:31.519 --> 00:11:59.039
You just need to make sure that you make these shifts in your content that allow for you to show up more strategically from a marketing standpoint to say yes, and I actually offer a service so that people not only know you and like you and love you and engage with you, but they also clearly understand what your expertise is, how you can help them, and it's helping them make that decision to move forward.
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:16.720
At the end of the day, I would rather you have a hundred people who really truly understand exactly what you do, what problem you solve, and they're actually considering working with you as opposed to 10,000 people just engaging and watching and telling you how cool you are.
00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:20.480
Thank you so much for tuning in to another episode of Think Like a CMO.
00:12:20.639 --> 00:12:28.399
