00:00:00.640 -->
00:00:03.120Talking to there is a method to the magnets.
00:00:03.200 -->
00:00:07.440My name is Rob Maxwell, and I'm an exercise physiologist in personal technicalist.
00:00:07.599 -->
00:00:12.880I'm the other Maxwell's Fitness program, and I've been in business since 1994.
00:00:13.199 -->
00:00:20.239The purpose of this podcast is to get to the real deal of what really worked and most importantly why things worked.
00:00:20.480 -->
00:00:23.519Thanks the name, there is a method to the magnet.
00:00:24.000 -->
00:00:29.440Before I get started today, let me thank Jonathan and Lynn Gildan of the Gilding Group ELT Pros.
00:00:29.920 -->
00:00:34.880They are committed to providing the highest level of customer service in home sales.
00:00:35.119 -->
00:00:39.200Why don't you give them a shout and figure out what your home is worth?
00:00:39.520 -->
00:00:44.399386-451-2412.
00:00:46.399 -->
00:00:49.119All right, what is happening, everybody?
00:00:49.359 -->
00:00:52.399Good morning, good afternoon, good evening.
00:00:52.560 -->
00:00:53.920Hey, maybe even good night.
00:00:54.079 -->
00:00:55.280Coach Rob here.
00:00:55.520 -->
00:00:59.759Whatever time you are listening to this podcast, it really doesn't matter.
00:00:59.920 -->
00:01:02.960I know for me it is late morning.
00:01:03.840 -->
00:01:07.359I just got done doing my yearly physical.
00:01:07.439 -->
00:01:09.280Those things are always fun.
00:01:09.680 -->
00:01:12.400Um, so anyway, that is finished.
00:01:12.480 -->
00:01:18.560This morning I did some zone to cardio for my exercise.
00:01:18.719 -->
00:01:21.280That's what's in the plan for me today.
00:01:21.519 -->
00:01:25.280And then I did some mobility work and flexibility work.
00:01:25.840 -->
00:01:33.439But um cardio is what I did, and cardio is what I'm going to talk about today.
00:01:34.000 -->
00:01:41.680Is all cardiorespiratory exercise created equal?
00:01:42.000 -->
00:01:43.120That is the question.
00:01:43.200 -->
00:01:53.280And what's really kind of funny is if you are old enough, yeah, I don't think you have to be that old, to remember the Dear Abby column.
00:01:53.519 -->
00:01:58.560But uh maybe you are, and maybe you're not, or maybe you remember it.
00:01:58.640 -->
00:02:19.759But what's kind of funny is the question comes from Dear Abby, a prior student of mine in Ellen's from Kaiser who got into massage therapy, and now she's really in the fitness and asks great questions, and uh just really a sponge for more knowledge, which uh I always appreciate.
00:02:20.000 -->
00:02:25.199So Dear Abby is getting the answer today instead of giving the advice.
00:02:25.280 -->
00:02:26.400But Abby asked that.
00:02:26.560 -->
00:02:27.360She wanted to know.
00:02:27.439 -->
00:02:32.800She kind of has a suspicion as to what the answer is, but uh she wanted to know.
00:02:32.879 -->
00:02:36.960You know, you hear everything out there with everything, right?
00:02:37.120 -->
00:02:41.919But with cardio too, like is running better, is walking better?
00:02:42.240 -->
00:02:50.639As she pointed out, the latest trending craze on social media has been incline walking on a treadmill.
00:02:50.800 -->
00:02:51.759Is that better?
00:02:51.919 -->
00:02:56.080You know, a lot of people have pedometers now, you know, in their phones or watches.
00:02:56.319 -->
00:03:01.360So can you just get your steps and call it a day, or does it have to be continuous?
00:03:01.520 -->
00:03:04.000Like, what's the deal, Coach Rob?
00:03:04.319 -->
00:03:06.319She wanted to know or wanted it clarified.
00:03:06.400 -->
00:03:09.840So that's what we're going to talk about today.
00:03:10.319 -->
00:03:14.319Let me start by saying a little saying that I've said to people for years.
00:03:14.479 -->
00:03:24.879I said, you know, the heart really isn't prejudice, it doesn't care what you use to elevate it.
00:03:25.199 -->
00:03:35.360And that is still widely true, but you still have to really tune in and listen to why, because there are some caveats to that.
00:03:35.759 -->
00:03:44.800That there are modes that are better for some things, there are intensity zones that are better better for others, there are different ways to spread it out.
00:03:44.960 -->
00:03:48.400So there is really pros and cons to all of this.
00:03:48.560 -->
00:03:58.639But hopefully, when you get done listening to this podcast, you will know what is the best type and intensity of cardio for you based on your goals.
00:03:58.879 -->
00:03:59.199Okay.
00:03:59.759 -->
00:04:04.159So the mode of cardiorespiratory exercise, that is the mode.
00:04:04.240 -->
00:04:06.960It's what you use to get the heart rate up.
00:04:07.439 -->
00:04:10.000Walking, jogging, running.
00:04:10.159 -->
00:04:14.560And really jogging is just more relaxed, controlled, slower running.
00:04:14.639 -->
00:04:15.759That's all it is.
00:04:15.919 -->
00:04:20.480Uh, walking or running or jogging on an incline is another mode.
00:04:20.560 -->
00:04:21.759So treadmill.
00:04:21.920 -->
00:04:26.480Um, indoor bike, outdoor bike, those are modes.
00:04:26.879 -->
00:04:29.120Swimming is a mode.
00:04:29.360 -->
00:04:32.319Um, stair climbers are a mode.
00:04:32.560 -->
00:04:37.360Um, let's see, as my phone goes off and it shouldn't.
00:04:37.600 -->
00:04:38.639Shame on me.
00:04:38.720 -->
00:04:41.040I muted it really quickly there.
00:04:41.279 -->
00:04:43.199So that's what the mode is.
00:04:43.439 -->
00:04:56.800Now, another very important distinction I need to give is that cardiorespiratory is defined as continuous elevated heart rate.
00:04:57.040 -->
00:05:07.199So when people sometimes ask, is pickleball, that's the latest crazen trend, of course, or tennis or other moving sports, is that cardio?
00:05:07.439 -->
00:05:12.560I mean, based on the definition of what cardiorespiratory exercise is, the answer is no.
00:05:12.639 -->
00:05:14.720It's not continuous and sustained.
00:05:14.959 -->
00:05:16.480It is good exercise.
00:05:16.639 -->
00:05:27.839You will get your heart rate up, you will burn some calories, you probably won't get enough of the stimulus continuously to get a cardiac adaptation, which is what we want.
00:05:28.560 -->
00:05:32.800So it is important to understand that the mode does matter.
00:05:32.959 -->
00:05:44.079So, in other words, stop and start sports, you can't really consider cardiorespiratory exercise, although they are activity and exercise for sure.
00:05:44.240 -->
00:05:44.720All right.
00:05:44.879 -->
00:05:46.160So let's look at some of these.
00:05:46.319 -->
00:05:47.839First, let's look at walking.
00:05:48.079 -->
00:05:50.639It's considered a low impact activity.
00:05:50.800 -->
00:05:57.199And by the way, low impact activity means that one foot is on the ground at all times.
00:05:57.360 -->
00:05:59.759So that's what is considered low impact.
00:06:00.000 -->
00:06:03.360Walking is very easy to recover from.
00:06:03.839 -->
00:06:07.279It can be done almost anywhere.
00:06:07.519 -->
00:06:22.000It can be form it can be performed frequently or more than, I mean, much more than other modes of exercise because of its easy to do um recovery ability.
00:06:22.399 -->
00:06:26.079So walking is also great for that.
00:06:26.480 -->
00:06:31.839You can do multiple walks in a day and not overly strain yourself.
00:06:32.079 -->
00:06:36.240It doesn't seem to have much interference with strength training.
00:06:36.399 -->
00:06:43.600So what that means is because it's using low intensity, it's using very low levels of glycogen.
00:06:43.839 -->
00:06:47.600So it's not going to eat up a lot of the glycogen that's stored in the muscles.
00:06:47.839 -->
00:06:56.480It's not going to most likely, unless you're extremely deconditioned, use the fast twitch muscle fibers that you typically use for strength training.
00:06:56.639 -->
00:07:05.839So it's not really going to interfere with you if your main goal is like a bodybuilder, which is hypertrophy and you want to gain muscle mass.
00:07:05.920 -->
00:07:14.879It's not going to interfere, which is why you see a lot of bodybuilders choosing walking as their mode of cardiorespiratory exercise.
00:07:15.040 -->
00:07:25.040It's also an excellent tool to use on your what we call zone one, zone two days, which is low-intensity cardiac exercise, to help you recover.
00:07:25.199 -->
00:07:28.879So it can also be used as a form of what we call active recovery.
00:07:29.199 -->
00:07:49.120So if you would define your goals as general health, you want to move daily, recovery is important for you, meaning that you really want to make sure you're recovering from other things, more vigorous exercise, or you have a high stress environment and you need something of a lower stress, then it's good for you.
00:07:49.360 -->
00:07:53.600It is great for beginners because you can do it anywhere at any intensity.
00:07:53.839 -->
00:08:01.759And it is great for people that can't really tolerate heavier levels of cardiorespiratory exercise.
00:08:02.000 -->
00:08:10.240The main downside to walking is that for most people, it's not going to elevate the heart rate that high.
00:08:10.399 -->
00:08:20.000So if you're really trying to improve your VO2 max, if you're really trying to improve aerobic function, aerobic performance, it's probably not your guy.
00:08:20.160 -->
00:08:20.720All right.
00:08:20.959 -->
00:08:28.399It's great, but it's not going to have a huge impact on your overall cardiorespiratory fitness.
00:08:28.560 -->
00:08:32.480It will on your health, but not your cardiorespiratory fitness.
00:08:32.559 -->
00:08:36.320Now, used with other things, I mean, that's how I pretty much use walking.
00:08:36.480 -->
00:08:39.440It is an absolute great tool.
00:08:39.679 -->
00:08:40.000Okay.
00:08:40.799 -->
00:08:44.799Um, look, it's not very exciting, but you can do it anywhere, anytime.
00:08:44.960 -->
00:08:47.039And by the way, I love to walk.
00:08:47.200 -->
00:08:48.480Like, I love to walk.
00:08:48.559 -->
00:08:51.679It's probably one of my go-tos of what I like to do.
00:08:51.840 -->
00:08:54.159I put on a podcast, I listen to music.
00:08:54.240 -->
00:08:55.919I absolutely love to walk.
00:08:56.080 -->
00:09:01.519Now let's look at the second mode that was brought up by um dear Abby.
00:09:01.919 -->
00:09:02.240Okay.
00:09:02.799 -->
00:09:04.399Incline treadmill walking.
00:09:04.480 -->
00:09:07.759So not running, but incline treadmill walking.
00:09:08.000 -->
00:09:08.639All right.
00:09:09.200 -->
00:09:10.559What's great about it?
00:09:10.799 -->
00:09:15.759It will increase your intensity, so therefore, your heart rate without having to run.
00:09:16.000 -->
00:09:19.120So you can still do it as a low impact activity.
00:09:19.200 -->
00:09:21.519So it's very friendly on the joints.
00:09:21.840 -->
00:09:26.399It absolutely will elevate your heart rate far higher than regular walking will.
00:09:26.559 -->
00:09:34.799I mean, you can elevate your heart rate really high with an inclined walk on a treadmill or hills, bridges, whatever you want to do.
00:09:35.039 -->
00:09:38.000It's definitely going to increase your muscular demand.
00:09:38.159 -->
00:09:45.200So you're now going to use more of the muscles you might have been afraid to use if you were trying to preserve them for strength training.
00:09:45.279 -->
00:09:50.159You're definitely going to use more quads, more glutes, more hamstrings when you walk.
00:09:50.240 -->
00:09:55.039So you're you are going to improve your muscular endurance on that.
00:09:55.200 -->
00:09:59.919It's great to get more muscle activity for your glutes, your calves, your quads, your hamstrings.
00:10:00.159 -->
00:10:09.120So if you're really trying to increase the hardness there, so you're going to get a little hypertrophy of the slow twitch muscle fibers, it's a great activity for that.
00:10:09.360 -->
00:10:11.120It's really easy to control.
00:10:11.200 -->
00:10:16.320That's one of the things I like about it, is you can go up and down very easily.
00:10:16.559 -->
00:10:19.840So let's say you like doing interval training.
00:10:19.919 -->
00:10:23.679In other words, you don't just like doing steady rate or sustained aerobic activity.
00:10:23.759 -->
00:10:27.360You'd rather kind of go up and down because it works better for you mentally or whatever.
00:10:27.440 -->
00:10:30.159And that could be lower intensity or high intensity.
00:10:30.240 -->
00:10:33.840Like not all interval training has to be high intensity.
00:10:33.919 -->
00:10:35.919It could just be up, down, up, down.
00:10:36.240 -->
00:10:37.679It really controls it well.
00:10:37.759 -->
00:10:40.240Like you'll find that you're able to elevate it.
00:10:40.399 -->
00:10:45.759And then as soon as you bring it back to flat or 0%, the heart rate almost drops immediately.
00:10:45.840 -->
00:10:52.159So it's a really great way to control it, probably a lot easier than when you are running.
00:10:52.240 -->
00:10:54.559It is certainly lower impact than running.
00:10:54.799 -->
00:10:56.720So easier on the joints.
00:10:56.879 -->
00:11:04.559If your goal is to improve your aerobic fitness, not just your health, but its fitness.
00:11:04.799 -->
00:11:12.720If your goal is to burn more fat because you're trying to burn more calories, it's absolutely going to do that.
00:11:12.960 -->
00:11:21.600It's a great tool for people that like to be ambulatory, so they like to do their cardio on their feet, but they don't want to run, then it's great for you.
00:11:21.679 -->
00:11:27.759And you are going to get a fantastic cardiorespiratory stimulus.
00:11:28.000 -->
00:11:28.639All right.
00:11:29.120 -->
00:11:36.960So one thing we need to keep in mind with it is that more incline isn't always better.
00:11:37.120 -->
00:11:43.519Sometimes when you crank up the incline really high, what happens is it really becomes non-sustainable.
00:11:43.600 -->
00:11:45.200Number one, that's kind of obvious.
00:11:45.360 -->
00:11:54.080But also, you start using a lot more of the musculature that you're trying to save at the expense of just getting your heart rate up into moderate zone.
00:11:54.159 -->
00:11:56.480So more isn't necessarily better.
00:11:56.639 -->
00:12:00.720You don't really want to turn it, turn it into or tune.
00:12:01.120 -->
00:12:05.679You don't want to turn it into another strength training workout.
00:12:05.840 -->
00:12:08.559So if you elevate it too high, you will.
00:12:08.799 -->
00:12:09.440All right.
00:12:09.679 -->
00:12:12.480Now let's look at the next mode.
00:12:12.639 -->
00:12:14.639The old stair climber machine.
00:12:14.720 -->
00:12:17.440You know, I used to love this stair climber.
00:12:17.600 -->
00:12:20.000I love the old-fashioned stairmaster stepper.
00:12:20.080 -->
00:12:20.960I think those were the best.
00:12:21.039 -->
00:12:22.240Personally, that's my bias.
00:12:22.320 -->
00:12:25.360I still like the newer ones, but not like the older ones.
00:12:25.440 -->
00:12:30.000But anyway, step mills are like a real stair, like a real stairwell.
00:12:30.080 -->
00:12:31.200You probably have seen them.
00:12:31.360 -->
00:12:38.000Then there's steppers, which is the one I'm referring to, that are more like um a lot more quick in the steps.
00:12:38.159 -->
00:12:38.799Those are great.
00:12:39.039 -->
00:12:39.840So, whatever.
00:12:40.000 -->
00:12:43.120If you like a stairmaster, that is fine.
00:12:43.360 -->
00:12:46.000What are the benefits to a stairmaster?
00:12:46.080 -->
00:12:50.720They definitely will give you a higher cardiovascular demand than walking.
00:12:50.960 -->
00:12:56.480They probably are a lot more closer to incline walking.
00:12:56.639 -->
00:13:06.879You're definitely going to get a little bit more quad involvement on a stairmaster than you would on a treadmill because it's going to be a little more hamstrings on the treadmill.
00:13:07.120 -->
00:13:10.159So that is good if that's what you really want.
00:13:10.240 -->
00:13:16.559Like let's say you run a lot and you're looking for a cross-training mode that's going to develop the opposing muscle groups.
00:13:16.639 -->
00:13:19.759The stairmaster is great for that, or step mill.
00:13:20.159 -->
00:13:26.879It's absolutely a great conditioning stimulus for your cardiovascular health and fitness.
00:13:27.039 -->
00:13:32.720It's also high intensity or can be high intensity without having to run.
00:13:32.799 -->
00:13:39.440Now it's actually considered non-impact because your feet, the step mill is a little bit different than that.
00:13:39.519 -->
00:13:43.919It's that would be considered more low impact because one foot is stepping up and down.
00:13:44.080 -->
00:13:53.039But traditional steppers is more what we would call non-impact because technically your foot never leaves the pedal.
00:13:53.120 -->
00:13:56.960So it's definitely easier on the joints for most people than running.
00:13:57.039 -->
00:13:59.120And by the way, I'm not bashing running.
00:13:59.200 -->
00:14:11.039I, you know, I love to run, but for some people, the high impact of the foot hitting the ground at a higher, faster, more frequent rate can cause some problems for them.
00:14:11.200 -->
00:14:11.679All right.
00:14:11.840 -->
00:14:14.960So the Stairmaster is great for that.
00:14:15.120 -->
00:14:17.679It's probably, again, not the greatest mode.
00:14:17.919 -->
00:14:26.559If you're trying to preserve muscle, then you would really, really focus on lower intensity cardio, such as walking.
00:14:26.799 -->
00:14:27.440All right.
00:14:28.159 -->
00:14:30.879Now let's talk about running.
00:14:31.200 -->
00:14:38.960You know, running is one of the best ways anybody can improve their cardiovascular system.
00:14:39.120 -->
00:14:44.399And I'm saying that because you can do it anywhere, you know, I mean, almost anywhere.
00:14:44.480 -->
00:14:47.360I mean, shoot, New York City, people are running in the streets all the time.
00:14:47.519 -->
00:14:48.159Central Park.
00:14:48.240 -->
00:14:51.279I mean, you can do it on country roads, you can do it in cities.
00:14:51.440 -->
00:14:53.279I mean, you can do it on a treadmill.
00:14:53.360 -->
00:14:54.320So it's great for that.
00:14:54.480 -->
00:14:55.120It really is.
00:14:55.360 -->
00:15:04.720So you're gonna get the cardiovascular demand that you're going to get with the high incline walking or moderate incline walking on a treadmill or the stairmaster.
00:15:04.879 -->
00:15:10.399So you're gonna get all that, but also you can just do it with your own body anywhere.
00:15:10.720 -->
00:15:12.639So running is great.
00:15:12.799 -->
00:15:18.399It's great for health, it is great for your cardiovascular fitness, trying to improve your VO2 max.
00:15:18.720 -->
00:15:21.759I'm not saying it's the best because there is no best.
00:15:22.080 -->
00:15:35.600Matter of fact, the the mode that we're not going to do around here, at least not in Daytona Beach, Florida, the mode that has shown the most VO2 max improvement has been cross-country skiing.
00:15:35.679 -->
00:15:36.639So there you go.
00:15:36.799 -->
00:15:44.960So running isn't the best for that, although cross-country skiing is not that accessible for most people.
00:15:45.120 -->
00:15:55.120But you are going to be able to stimulate your heart rate enough because you do have to have some higher levels of intensity to improve your cardiovascular fitness.
00:15:55.200 -->
00:15:57.039I need to continue to repeat that.
00:15:57.200 -->
00:16:11.360You can improve your health with walking, but it is going to be hard to improve your cardiorespiratory fitness without higher intensity forms of cardio, which running absolutely does that.
00:16:11.679 -->
00:16:18.240Now, you have one of the highest energy expenditures per minute than any other forms of exercise.
00:16:18.320 -->
00:16:32.879So, for example, like most people might burn three to four calories on a flat walk, and they're going to burn between 10 or per minute, per minute, three to four calories per minute on a flat walk versus say 10 to 15 on a run per minute.
00:16:33.039 -->
00:16:37.759So the caloric expenditure on running is far greater.
00:16:37.919 -->
00:16:41.919That's not great for everybody, which I'll get to in a second.
00:16:42.399 -->
00:16:48.080It is great for improving your running specific fitness and economy.
00:16:48.320 -->
00:16:56.639Economy of motion is basically means that you are improving the exact muscle pathways and the exact way that you want to use them.
00:16:56.879 -->
00:17:05.519So if you want to do your local turkey trot, your 5Ks on Thanksgiving Day or any other days, I mean, the best way to improve that is running.
00:17:05.759 -->
00:17:11.279So you really can't bike a lot and walk a lot and then expect to do well in a running 5K.
00:17:11.359 -->
00:17:14.160There is a specificity function in that.
00:17:14.240 -->
00:17:17.279So it's absolutely great for that.
00:17:17.599 -->
00:17:20.319But, and it's a weight-bearing activity.
00:17:20.480 -->
00:17:23.599I wanted to slide into the downsides really quick, didn't I?
00:17:23.759 -->
00:17:24.559Can't forget this one.
00:17:24.640 -->
00:17:26.960It's a weight-bearing activity, just like walking.
00:17:27.200 -->
00:17:31.759So it does help improve osteomalacia, osteopenia, osteoporosis.
00:17:31.839 -->
00:17:33.359It absolutely improves that.
00:17:33.440 -->
00:17:34.720So it is great for that.
00:17:34.880 -->
00:17:42.480And because it's high impact, you're actually going to get greater benefits to your bone density if you ran versus walking.
00:17:42.799 -->
00:17:54.720Now, the downsides to it, because it's higher impact for some people that have pre-existing conditions already, because I hate when people say running causes injuries, it really doesn't.
00:17:54.880 -->
00:17:56.960Studies have shown that that is not true.
00:17:57.279 -->
00:18:00.240Biomechanical flaws can cause injuries.
00:18:00.319 -->
00:18:12.720So if you have something biomechanically speaking that's wrong with you, prior injuries, maybe you over pronate too much, whatever, that could be exasperated by running, but running doesn't cause injuries.
00:18:12.880 -->
00:18:27.759If you have arthritis already from your days of playing football or your days of just whatever, then yeah, you might feel some pain in your knees and hips when you run, which means it's exasperating it, kind of making it worse at the time, but it's not causing it.
00:18:27.839 -->
00:18:28.160All right.
00:18:28.240 -->
00:18:30.559I need to caution people with that.
00:18:30.720 -->
00:18:32.720It got to give you the fair news on both.
00:18:32.880 -->
00:18:37.279For some people, it is going to hurt when they run because they do have pre-existing conditions.
00:18:37.359 -->
00:18:38.319So don't run.
00:18:38.559 -->
00:18:40.319But for other people, it doesn't.
00:18:40.400 -->
00:18:43.920It's really so much of this comes down to your personal choice.
00:18:44.000 -->
00:18:44.400All right.
00:18:44.559 -->
00:18:50.319So because it's higher impact, there might be people that that causes problems for.
00:18:50.559 -->
00:18:52.960It's going to make you have to recover more.
00:18:53.119 -->
00:18:54.720So that's another downside.
00:18:54.880 -->
00:18:56.000It's going to be tough.
00:18:56.079 -->
00:19:10.000Like, let's say, if you are pretty serious about your strength training and you work your legs pretty hard on a Monday, if you go for a run on a Tuesday, that's kind of two days in a row back to back, that your legs aren't getting a lot of recovery.
00:19:10.240 -->
00:19:12.319So that's not necessarily great.
00:19:12.480 -->
00:19:20.000So for somebody that cares about both things, which we call concurrent training, then they're going to want to limit that.
00:19:20.160 -->
00:19:27.839They might be better off to do their strength training, which requires a lot of energy and recovery, and then walk the next day versus run.
00:19:28.000 -->
00:19:32.960But again, you if you are going to run, you do have to consider these things.
00:19:33.279 -->
00:19:37.440Um, you know, it can create more muscle damage.
00:19:37.599 -->
00:19:43.359So the bodybuilders may not do it a whole lot because again, it's not just about getting your heart rate up.
00:19:43.519 -->
00:19:53.359You are using more of the muscle tissue as you are running, which could cause maybe you not getting the gains in the gym that you want to get.
00:19:53.440 -->
00:19:53.839All right.
00:19:53.920 -->
00:19:59.279So there's definitely issues with running and hypertrophy training.
00:19:59.440 -->
00:20:03.759There's definitely issues where they don't always go great together.
00:20:03.920 -->
00:20:10.319But you also don't see a lot of people that bodybuild that want to do running for a serious hobby either.
00:20:10.480 -->
00:20:13.599So, in a way, you probably aren't going to see that anyway.
00:20:13.680 -->
00:20:19.519But if you were, and hey, I've been there, it definitely can impact both of them.
00:20:19.759 -->
00:20:20.319All right.
00:20:20.559 -->
00:20:26.160So you'd kind of have to pick what which one is more important to you, and you know that you're going to have a downside with that.
00:20:26.240 -->
00:20:26.799All right.
00:20:27.119 -->
00:20:43.920So if your goal is the best cardiovascular fitness you can have, if your goal is running performance, if your goal is time efficient cardio, because you can do a lot more on a 20-minute run than you could in a 40-minute walk for sure, and you love the run, then you know what, dear Abby?
00:20:44.240 -->
00:20:46.079Running is for you.
00:20:46.240 -->
00:20:49.440Now let's look at cycling, indoor or outdoor.
00:20:49.599 -->
00:20:51.920It's a non-impact activity.
00:20:52.160 -->
00:20:54.559So your feet never leave the ground or hit the ground.
00:20:54.640 -->
00:20:57.440So it's a non-impact activity.
00:20:58.319 -->
00:21:05.440It seems to be fairly tolerated, if not very well tolerated by most people on their joints.
00:21:05.519 -->
00:21:08.079So it's very joint-friendly.
00:21:08.559 -->
00:21:10.240You get to get off your feet.
00:21:10.319 -->
00:21:19.359So if you're doing a lot of like walking, running, jogging, and you're looking for something to cross-train on an outdoor or an indoor bike, it would work out great.
00:21:19.519 -->
00:21:23.599So it's very good on the muscles that way, good on the joints.
00:21:23.920 -->
00:21:30.079You are gonna have to work at a higher rate of perceived exertion on a bike than you would with running.
00:21:30.319 -->
00:21:39.359For example, if you've ever run or really pushed it a little bit, like even jogged, you realize your heart rate up comes up pretty fast if you're like most normal people.
00:21:39.519 -->
00:21:46.799On a bike, you are going to have to work harder to elevate your heart rate, especially indoors.
00:21:46.880 -->
00:21:55.279So, for some people, even though the heart rate's not getting as elevated, the rate of perceived exertion or how it feels feels harder.
00:21:55.519 -->
00:21:59.759So that's not necessarily a great thing, but it is good for health.
00:22:00.559 -->
00:22:05.440It is good for fitness, but you are going to have to push it more to get your heart rate up.
00:22:05.519 -->
00:22:09.599You're gonna have to work to get your heart rate up higher on a bike.
00:22:09.680 -->
00:22:18.880But it is a great tool, good on the joints, will improve your health, will improve your fitness, great for cross training, great to get off your feet to do something different.
00:22:19.039 -->
00:22:22.880And it definitely is great to build up your quadriceps.
00:22:22.960 -->
00:22:26.720So cycling is another one, another great choice.
00:22:26.880 -->
00:22:32.720Now, if you're gonna go like lower intensity cycling, that's similar to like walking in a way.
00:22:32.799 -->
00:22:49.759So you're gonna find that the bodybuilders who are afraid to lose too much muscle tissue or they don't want to get in the way of their hypertrophy training are going to also cycle more because they can cycle at a lower intensity and not really put a lot of damage to the muscles.
00:22:49.920 -->
00:22:54.000That changes drastically if they start cycling with more intensity.
00:22:54.079 -->
00:22:55.440So it is great for that.
00:22:55.599 -->
00:22:59.200And also, cycling is one of the best warm-up choices you can use.
00:22:59.279 -->
00:23:02.960Like I had two bikes at my gym to warm up for strength training.
00:23:03.039 -->
00:23:06.400So it really is a great warm-up tool as well.
00:23:06.720 -->
00:23:07.680One more.
00:23:08.880 -->
00:23:11.440How about just getting in your steps?
00:23:11.920 -->
00:23:17.519Okay, so steps have become a big thing over the last 15 years or so.
00:23:17.759 -->
00:23:21.759And it's funny, you know, there's that 10,000 step rule, right?
00:23:21.920 -->
00:23:24.160Here's what's really, really interesting about that.
00:23:24.319 -->
00:23:26.160That number is completely made up.
00:23:26.240 -->
00:23:28.880Like nobody really even knows where that came from.
00:23:29.039 -->
00:23:32.640Sure, if you're like most people, that's going to be five miles in the day.
00:23:32.799 -->
00:23:33.279All right.
00:23:33.440 -->
00:23:42.160But as far as it being like this benchmark of like that's where you need to be to be considered a highly active person, nobody knows where that came from.
00:23:42.240 -->
00:23:44.799And when I say nobody knows, I mean people in my industry.
00:23:44.960 -->
00:23:47.519So, you know, we look at all the exercise studies.
00:23:47.680 -->
00:23:50.000So 10,000 is kind of a made-up number.
00:23:50.160 -->
00:23:51.440It doesn't make it bad though.
00:23:51.519 -->
00:23:54.319I mean, it's a it's a great benchmark for most people.
00:23:54.400 -->
00:23:58.319It's just funny, you know, that there's really nothing to it.
00:23:58.640 -->
00:24:02.640But more steps the better as far as your activity level goes.
00:24:02.720 -->
00:24:04.319There's no question about that.
00:24:04.400 -->
00:24:14.160Like I can tell a lot about a person when I look at those numbers, you know, if they're not moving a lot with steps, they're probably not moving a lot at all.
00:24:14.400 -->
00:24:19.759Now, here's the thing: it's a great tool when somebody is trying to lose weight.
00:24:20.000 -->
00:24:30.000I'm talking about measuring steps and not necessarily doing any kind of formal cardiorespiratory exercise because the more activity you're burning, I mean, the more calories you're burning.
00:24:30.079 -->
00:24:33.519I mean, weight loss all comes down to energy in versus energy out.
00:24:33.680 -->
00:24:37.200So it's a great tool for that.
00:24:37.440 -->
00:24:39.440It's also a barometer to make you feel better.
00:24:39.519 -->
00:24:41.359Like, you know, give yourself a pat on the back.
00:24:41.440 -->
00:24:41.839That's important.
00:24:41.920 -->
00:24:46.960It's like, man, I did my 10,000 steps or I did my 5,000 steps or I did my 8,000 steps.
00:24:47.119 -->
00:24:47.839So it's good.
00:24:47.920 -->
00:24:50.640You get yourself a win for the day.
00:24:50.880 -->
00:24:55.759It doesn't tell you anything about your heart rate or your cardiorespiratory performance.
00:24:55.839 -->
00:24:58.799It doesn't tell you a thing about that.
00:24:59.279 -->
00:25:02.480It doesn't tell you your speed of walking.
00:25:02.559 -->
00:25:06.960So it's not really telling you if you are getting more fit or not.
00:25:07.200 -->
00:25:09.440So, you know, that's the negative to it.
00:25:09.519 -->
00:25:17.279And in short, you're not really getting any form of cardiorespiratory or cardiovascular adaptation.
00:25:17.359 -->
00:25:30.559So you're not improving your heart and lung health outside of the fact that you are burning calories, you're moving, so you're gonna burn more energy, which hopefully, if you need to, will help you burn body fat.
00:25:30.640 -->
00:25:32.240Okay, so it's great for that.
00:25:32.319 -->
00:25:35.920So if you're interested in only that, then it's for you.
00:25:36.319 -->
00:25:51.200If you're interested in improving your cardiorespiratory fitness, aerobic fitness, cardiovascular fitness, you're gonna have to do another mode of cardiorespiratory exercise at least three days a week for 20 minutes.
00:25:51.440 -->
00:25:52.079All right.
00:25:52.480 -->
00:25:55.440So, how do they all compare?
00:25:55.920 -->
00:25:57.200How do you choose?
00:25:57.839 -->
00:26:00.319It really depends on your goal.
00:26:00.559 -->
00:26:15.200If you are mostly interested in improving your cardiorespiratory fitness, like you're not doing cardio because you're trying to get skinny.
00:26:15.279 -->
00:26:19.599And by the way, that's one of the reasons why we should not do it.
00:26:19.759 -->
00:26:24.799Like we need to think about that in the form of how we eat in regards to how we eat.
00:26:24.960 -->
00:26:28.240I wrote a book called You Can't Outrun a Poor Diet.
00:26:28.559 -->
00:26:37.680So cardio really should be first and foremost for your fitness and your health, not necessarily for losing body fat.
00:26:37.759 -->
00:26:40.319Again, steps is a great way to measure that.
00:26:40.400 -->
00:26:43.200If you're trying to get more activity, of course it is.
00:26:43.359 -->
00:26:50.319But formal cardiorespiratory exercise, its main purpose should be to improve one of the other health outcomes.
00:26:50.480 -->
00:26:58.079So if you're trying to improve your aerobic fitness, like you're like, if it's Abby, I I'm not completely sure.
00:26:58.160 -->
00:27:01.200I I think I have an idea where she wants to go with it.
00:27:01.440 -->
00:27:18.799But like if it's on, I want to be as aerobically fit as possible, then you do have to choose higher intensity aerobic modes, such as running, jogging, or walking on an incline, or higher intensity cycling or steppers.
00:27:18.960 -->
00:27:26.000Like that's gonna have to be your mode if your number one goal is to improve your cardiorespiratory endurance.
00:27:26.160 -->
00:27:35.599So, in the level of how they rate that way, it would go running number one, stair climbing or real stairs number two, as far as like the effectiveness.
00:27:35.759 -->
00:27:38.000I already said cross-country skiing.
00:27:38.160 -->
00:27:42.799But if you're out there in Wyoming, my sister lives out there, knock yourself out.
00:27:43.039 -->
00:27:45.359She probably does have those snowshoes for that.
00:27:45.440 -->
00:27:48.640I'm not sure, maybe it's a different thing, shows how much I know about it.
00:27:48.880 -->
00:27:56.240But after stairs, it would be incline walking and then cycling and then level ground walking.
00:27:56.319 -->
00:27:57.839It would go in that order.
00:27:58.160 -->
00:28:08.720If you're trying to build muscle and get some sort of cardiorespiratory stimulus, you've got two options.
00:28:08.880 -->
00:28:19.200You can limit the amount of higher intensity cardio you do to like maybe once per week, and then do some more moderate the other time.
00:28:19.279 -->
00:28:26.400So maybe it's a run, and then the other days would be an incline walk jog in more like zone two.
00:28:27.119 -->
00:28:35.279But if you are trying to preserve muscle, you are going to want to keep the intensity controlled for sure.
00:28:35.440 -->
00:28:37.680What that looks like for you, everybody's different.
00:28:37.759 -->
00:28:53.759But if your goal is to build muscle, maintain muscle, and improve your cardiorespiratory endurance, you're going to want to maybe you still have to do some higher intensity cardio, but you can keep it to less frequency.
00:28:53.839 -->
00:29:03.440You can't just do one a week and do nothing, but you could do one day of that and then two to three days of lower to moderate cardiorespiratory exercise.
00:29:03.680 -->
00:29:26.960If you're in the camp of you want to keep your health pretty good, and you're not really interested at all in maintaining your or not maintaining, you're not interested in improving your cardiorespiratory fitness, and you're a bodybuilder and you want to grow as much muscle andor strength as possible, then your aerobic choice is going to be walking or light cycling, low intensity.
00:29:27.119 -->
00:29:28.559So that would be your goal.
00:29:28.640 -->
00:29:37.759So really it comes down to how much do you want to preserve muscle and how much do you want to improve your cardiorespiratory endurance?
00:29:37.920 -->
00:29:40.160I mean, there's one thing we all have to keep in mind.
00:29:40.319 -->
00:29:41.440You can't have everything.
00:29:41.599 -->
00:29:42.799Like, you can't.
00:29:42.880 -->
00:29:50.000Like a bodybuilder can't say, I want to be as big and strong as humanly possible, and I want to be the best runner.
00:29:50.160 -->
00:29:59.599I mean, there is going to be some give and take in everything that you do, but that is going to be the big determination as far as like what works for you.
00:29:59.839 -->
00:30:03.119I mean, another consideration is that you just say, well, you know what?
00:30:03.200 -->
00:30:11.920I like high-intensity strength training, I like high-intensity cardio, I like how it makes me feel, but I understand that I'm not going to get the best adaptations.
00:30:12.079 -->
00:30:14.240It's not like you're not going to get good adaptations.
00:30:14.319 -->
00:30:22.240I mean, my goodness, when you're at this point in your fitness career and you're worried about this, you are 90% ahead of the rest of the country and the rest of the world.
00:30:22.400 -->
00:30:25.200So it's not like you're not fit at this point.
00:30:25.359 -->
00:30:29.200It just means that you may not be maximizing both of them.
00:30:29.519 -->
00:30:30.160All right.
00:30:30.720 -->
00:30:35.680So to wrap this up, and I really hope it answered the question.
00:30:35.839 -->
00:30:41.920To wrap this up, a lot of this is going to come down to your fitness levels, your goals.
00:30:42.640 -->
00:30:47.920How well do you deal with tolerate exercise and higher intensity exercise?
00:30:48.079 -->
00:30:49.920Like, how well do you recover?
00:30:50.160 -->
00:30:52.960And these things could be, you know, they can be transient.
00:30:53.039 -->
00:31:00.480I mean, you might go through phases where you're recovering really well, and then you might be like recovering from COVID and you're not.
00:31:00.559 -->
00:31:06.079So you have to kind of, you know, go, oh, I remember that high intensity exercise and won't recover as well.
00:31:06.160 -->
00:31:07.839So I better do some lower intensity.
00:31:08.000 -->
00:31:10.880I mean, yeah, so this could be transient too.
00:31:10.960 -->
00:31:18.079So you have to always remember that too, that all of these tools are going to have different places in your life at different times.
00:31:18.240 -->
00:31:20.079A lot of it also comes down to time.
00:31:20.240 -->
00:31:25.039I mean, if you really like to do long, slow workouts, I mean, that's fine.
00:31:25.119 -->
00:31:28.960If you like to go out and do long walks again, I think that's great for your health.
00:31:29.119 -->
00:31:34.960Just keep in mind that you're probably not going to get the cardior respiratory adaptations.
00:31:35.359 -->
00:31:41.039If you're really short of time, then higher intensity cardio is going to work for you.
00:31:41.200 -->
00:31:41.759All right.
00:31:42.160 -->
00:31:49.759So I think this was a great question, and I love these questions, and I want you to keep them coming.

00:32:08.720All right.

00:32:36.559Now I would like to thank our second great sponsor, Procharge Liquid Protein.
00:32:36.880 -->
00:32:41.519What I love most about it is it is extremely portable.
00:32:41.759 -->
00:32:52.000I have a tendency to make a mess when I'm making my protein smoothies after I exercise because I spill the powders and all that other stuff.
00:32:52.240 -->
00:33:00.079But instead, with Procharge, all I have to do is open up the cap and pour it in my mouth.
00:33:00.319 -->
00:33:06.720There are two servings per container, and each serving has 20 grams of protein.
00:33:06.960 -->
00:33:10.799My personal favorite flavor is lemon lime.
