ABOUT THIS EPISODE
On September 15, the Senate voted down a Coalition bill to amend the Sex Discrimination Act with definitions based on biological sex. The push, led by Liberal senator Michaelia Cash, follows similar moves in the US and UK that have excluded trans and gender diverse people from legal recognition.
An open letter, signed by 100 civil society groups and coordinated by Equality Australia, has urged Parliament to keep rejecting changes like this. The letter claims that such policies are not only discriminatory, but also impractical and risk jeopardising decades of case law.
