ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Join us for a conversation with our own Pastor Aaron Garriott about his new book, Thy Deepest Distress: Anxiety and Depression in the Christian Life.
Anxiety and depression are common realities in a fallen world, and Christians are not immune to them. Yet believers can sometimes struggle not only with the distress itself, but also with difficult questions about faith, sin, suffering, providence, and what it means to trust God in the midst of darkness.
In Thy Deepest Distress, Aaron approaches these subjects as a pastor, theologian, and fellow Christian who has known something of these struggles personally. Rather than offering simplistic answers or promising a quick cure, he seeks to help Christians understand anxiety and depression biblically and to point suffering believers toward the grace, sympathy, and faithfulness of Christ.
Topics considered include:
• Why did Aaron write Thy Deepest Distress? • How have Aaron's own experiences with anxiety and depression shaped the book? • Are anxiety and depression necessarily indications of weak faith? • Is all anxiety sinful? • How should Christians distinguish between sin, weakness, physical frailty, and the broader effects of living in a fallen world? • What can Christians learn from believers of the past who experienced deep melancholy, anxiety, and depression? • Why do the Puritans feature so prominently in the book? • How does a biblical understanding of God's providence change the way we view suffering? • What comfort does the sympathy and intercession of Christ provide to the distressed Christian? • How can anxiety and depression become occasions for deeper dependence upon Christ rather than merely obstacles to the Christian life? • What can pastors, elders, family members, and friends do to help those who are walking through seasons of deep distress? • How can the Church offer genuine Christian hope without resorting to clichés, platitudes, or overly simplistic answers?
