ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Self-improvement can look like devotion, but what if it's actually your nervous system trying to stay safe? In this episode, I unpack when personal growth becomes a trauma response. When the pressure to be perfect, the urgency to “fix” yourself fast, and the quiet belief that love is something you earn after you become acceptable is driving your healing, your unresolved traumas are running the show.
If you've read the books, gone to therapy, established a journaling habit, and tried all the healing practices but still feel exhausted and stuck, you're likely operating from threat management instead of genuine expansion. Feeling trapped in a cycle of self-improvement means healing has become another survival mechanism and a way to negotiate with your worth.
When your relationship to your healing is driven by shame, fear, and rejection prevention, the same “healthy” practices can keep you braced, dysregulated, and depleted. When your relationship to yourself is rooted in curiosity, compassion, and safety, your nervous system can finally stop scanning and start restoring.
You'll learn how my Love-First Protocol and Joy Principle help your nervous system feel safe enough to heal optimally. It's time to treat yourself as someone who's already whole instead of a problem that needs to be fixed so your “healing routine” can feel like love instead of pressure.

00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:06.000
You might think all you're striving for self-improvement is growth, but it's actually a trauma response.
00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:23.600
You've read the books, you've done the therapy, you've tracked your triggers and tried to become the most healed version of yourself, and you're exhausted because somewhere along the way, healing stopped being something you did for yourself and became something you did to yourself.
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:25.199
I'm Linda Villines.
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:32.399
Welcome to The Simple Source, where we liberate your source self so you can stop striving and start arriving.
00:00:32.399 --> 00:00:43.679
Now, there's a version of self-improvement that frees you, and there's a version that keeps you chasing a less broken version of yourself so that you can finally feel safe.
00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:50.719
I know this because I spent years exhausting myself by doing everything in my healing.
00:00:50.719 --> 00:00:53.920
I thought pushing myself to heal was healing.
00:00:53.920 --> 00:01:07.040
But what I was really doing was just depleting my nervous system and using quote unquote growth to defend an old conditioned belief that being perfect was the only way that I would be lovable and good enough and thus safe.
00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:14.079
Today we're unpacking why you can do everything correctly, but still feel stuck.
00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:22.079
And I'm going to explain exactly how to help your body stop using growth for self-protection so that you can finally be free.
00:01:22.079 --> 00:01:29.280
You're also going to learn the difference between healing that truly frees you and healing that keeps you braced and wounded.
00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:32.000
So I spent years hustling in my healing.
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:40.879
I thought that doing everything, trying all the trends and diets and biohacks and reading every book and blog was quote unquote healing.
00:01:40.879 --> 00:01:49.439
But I was unconsciously using healing to feel lovable and finally good enough and to feel validated in my worth.
00:01:49.439 --> 00:01:58.000
But the real healing started when I realized the safety and validation I was seeking could only be sourced from within.
00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:01.359
Self-improvement is a worthwhile endeavor.
00:02:01.359 --> 00:02:05.519
I want you to heal, because healing is everyone's destiny.
00:02:05.519 --> 00:02:11.280
If you're human, you've experienced collective and ancestral trauma conditioning, right?
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:15.919
A mirrored distortion of your true self and pain and heartbreak to some degree.
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:19.039
That's why Chiron is in everyone's natal chart.
00:02:19.039 --> 00:02:20.560
Everyone's got shit to heal.
00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:29.439
So yes to inner child work and somatic practices and nervous system regulation, yes to all of that, because it can be genuinely healing.
00:02:29.439 --> 00:02:34.560
The difference is what motivates your healing and who you're healing for.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:43.680
When you heal for yourself and you're motivated by self-love, you're going to meet yourself with curiosity, real vulnerability, and compassion.
00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:48.400
That's when self-improvement becomes true contact with your authentic self.
00:02:48.400 --> 00:03:02.400
But when you heal for others and you're motivated by shame and self-loathing and insecurity and a need for external validation, you end up monitoring yourself for flaws, mistakes, shortcomings.
00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:05.520
And that's when self-improvement becomes self-surveillance.
00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:11.360
The practices are the same on the surface, but your relationship with the practices is different.
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:20.000
So a trauma response is fundamentally just a survival pattern organized around safety and born from unresolved trauma.
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:30.719
And your nervous system uses your past experiences to try to predict future danger, future hurt, pain, shame, abandonment, rejection.
00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:36.800
And so it develops these strategies to prevent that danger and hurt from happening again.
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:43.199
And when self-improvement becomes a trauma response, your nervous system isn't actually trying to expand.
00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:48.960
It's actually shrinking and contracting because it's trying to prevent pain.
00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:57.840
It's trying to prevent what it deems as dangerous and vulnerability exposure being seen before you feel ready.
00:03:57.840 --> 00:04:05.280
And your body doesn't distinguish between the surface intention of a practice and the energy underneath that's driving it.
00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:09.759
The energy underneath is what is telling your nervous system if you're safe or not.
00:04:09.759 --> 00:04:17.279
That means when you journal from a genuine desire to know and love yourself more, your body registers that as healing.
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:28.399
But when you journal from the belief that something is wrong with you and you need to fix it before it ruins your life, your body registers that as you feeling unsafe.
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:32.959
So that journaling session isn't going to be healing in the way that you want it to be.
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:36.800
Now, the first example is you in a healing relationship with yourself.
00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:40.560
The second example is you and threat management.
00:04:40.560 --> 00:04:51.600
And that's why you can have a beautiful, like sophisticated and even dedicated healing practice and still feel more exhausted than liberated by it.
00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:59.600
The practices are valid, but your body is experiencing urgency and shame and fear underneath your commitment.
00:04:59.600 --> 00:05:04.879
So the environment sustaining those practices is actually panic and pressure.
00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:09.360
And panic and pressure are signals of danger, not safety.
00:05:09.360 --> 00:05:15.199
I remember that urgency that I used to feel at the start of my healing journey, like 15 years ago, right?
00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:23.279
Everything was like so high stakes because I had all these chronic conditions and I just, just wanted to not feel like shit all the time.
00:05:23.279 --> 00:05:29.279
And that desperation was making it worse because it was making it harder for my body to heal.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:32.639
I didn't feel safe in my body because I thought my body was broken.
00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:35.199
I thought something was wrong with me.
00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:39.279
And of course, that's why I spent years trying to heal, but never healed.
00:05:39.279 --> 00:05:45.360
I just got more tired in a different way, more isolated in a different way.
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:51.040
Your nervous system doesn't need you to be like a quote unquote better, more evolved person.
00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:53.920
It needs you to feel safe in yourself.
00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:57.759
That's what it needs, a real sense of safety within.
00:05:57.759 --> 00:06:06.160
And you may think that all the self-improvement and nervous system regulation practices that you have been trying are going to like quote unquote fix you.
00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:13.199
But the truth is there's really nothing to fix because you are already perfect as you are, regardless of what is happening.
00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:15.839
And that's what your nervous system needs to feel.
00:06:15.839 --> 00:06:19.759
It needs to stop feeling like it has to survive itself.
00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:24.319
And there's a specific pattern that happens when healing becomes survival.
00:06:24.319 --> 00:06:26.000
It's rooted in that urgency.
00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:29.839
It's that feeling that you need to heal this issue right now, right?
00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:31.600
This problem right now.
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:37.439
Even though your body may not be ready, your nervous system may not be available for that.
00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:49.759
Even though you're like forcing that breakthrough with like sleepless nights and what you think is like some second dark night of the soul, instead of just letting the truth surface with ease, with love.
00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:57.759
That urgency is your nervous system believing that life cannot continue safely until that wound is resolved.
00:06:57.759 --> 00:07:00.639
And that urgency creates a cycle, right?
00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:03.199
You got to get that new best-selling book.
00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:16.319
You have to listen to that new podcast, you have to invest in that new modality, adopt that new framework, obtain a new diagnosis, discover that new reason for your pain that you haven't figured out just yet.
00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:19.199
And each one like feels like that missing piece.
00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:25.279
Each one promises that this is going to be the thing that finally gets you to the other side.
00:07:25.279 --> 00:07:36.319
But really, each one just adds another layer of effort and pressure to your body that is already spending enormous energy just trying to feel safe in the moment.
00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:40.160
Now, from the outside, that can look like dedication for sure.
00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:45.680
It can look like being self-aware, being spiritually attuned or mature.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:50.639
You may think that you are like doing the work and being committed and courageous.
00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:54.720
But inside, your body is like, I am so depleted.
00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:57.120
Why am I trapped in this desperate state?
00:07:57.120 --> 00:07:58.560
When can I rest?
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:02.480
Your body is not going, gee, my owner is so devoted.
00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:08.879
Your body is going, damn, here is just another thing that we gotta chase and struggle through.
00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:22.480
There's a physiological difference between your nervous system responding to a healing practice from genuine readiness and obeying a survival alarm because you keep operating from pressure and panic.
00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:37.200
Your nervous system knows when your body is safe and open and actually expanding, and when your conscious mind is forcing self-improvement because it doesn't feel good enough, lovable, valid, and worthy as is.
00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:40.960
And the cost of that pattern is measurable.
00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:50.399
When your body is constantly scanning, correcting, monitoring, it's spending its precious energy on threat management instead of restoration.
00:08:50.399 --> 00:08:52.960
That's why healing feels like an uphill battle.
00:08:52.960 --> 00:08:56.799
Your body is not operating in optimal healing mode.
00:08:56.799 --> 00:09:01.840
And then over time, rest starts to feel really unfamiliar, right?
00:09:01.840 --> 00:09:04.879
Stillness starts to feel irresponsible.
00:09:04.879 --> 00:09:08.799
Doing nothing starts to feel icky, dangerous, uncomfortable.
00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:18.960
The person who's addicted to healing and self-improvement is often the person whose body has forgotten that rest and stillness and doing nothing are safe.
00:09:18.960 --> 00:09:22.159
And that then just reinforces that cycle.
00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:29.120
The tension and the exhaustion become evidence that something is still unresolved, that something is still wrong with you.
00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:36.559
And then it convinces you that you still have to heal more, that you have to keep getting better, do more, right?
00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:42.080
And then you feel shame and sadness and anger and resentment and anxiety.
00:09:42.080 --> 00:09:50.399
All of those signals not only trap your body in a survival state, but they become the quote unquote proof that something is wrong with you.
00:09:50.399 --> 00:09:53.919
You become convinced that you have to spend your whole life healing.
00:09:53.919 --> 00:09:56.720
I used to think that healing was a lifelong practice.
00:09:56.720 --> 00:10:01.919
I totally bought into that narrative, just like you, just like everybody else.
00:10:01.919 --> 00:10:08.240
That normalized idea that everything in life is hard work or a struggle of some kind.
00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:09.759
Otherwise, it's not worth it.
00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:12.399
But healing is not a lifelong practice.
00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:15.759
You don't have to keep fixing yourself for the rest of your life.
00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:24.960
Life is not a decades-long journey of ongoing proving that you are lovable and worthy and valuable enough to be chosen.
00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:26.159
That's not healing.
00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:27.200
That's a prison.
00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:35.519
Spending your whole life trying to be worthy of being seen and being chosen, being successful, being loved, that's what's underneath the urgency.
00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:41.200
You're negotiating with your worth and you're calling it self-improvement and healing.
00:10:41.200 --> 00:11:06.799
Now, whether or not you are conscious of it, you think if I become healed enough, regulated enough, emotionally mature enough, and easy enough to love, then I'll finally be safe from rejection, safe from abandonment, safe from being seen as too much or not enough, safe from the thing that happened that broke me earlier in life and caused all that pain.
00:11:06.799 --> 00:11:11.919
And for a lot of people, self-improvement is like preemptive rejection management.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:13.519
That's the trauma response.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:19.600
On a subconscious level, you're not trying to expand or evolve or embody your highest self.
00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:25.360
You're trying to become impossible to reject, to abandon, to criticize, to shame.
00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:34.159
And that motivation, even if buried and unseen on a deep subconscious level, will always result in your depletion.
00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:40.960
Because expansion is motivated by the desire to know yourself more deeply so that you can love yourself more deeply.
00:11:40.960 --> 00:11:53.200
But rejection, prevention, is motivated by wanting to fix or remove like every part of you that someone could use as a reason to not love you and to leave you.
00:11:53.200 --> 00:12:05.440
If you've been doing the work but still feel stuck, like no matter how much healing, manifesting, or personal growth you invest in, or spiritual practices you try, something just isn't clicking.
00:12:05.440 --> 00:12:08.559
You're not alone and you're not failing.
00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:14.639
The truth is, most teachings and approaches are outdated and only scratch the surface.
00:12:14.639 --> 00:12:24.720
My book, Unconditional, You Are Perfect As You Are, helps you understand exactly why things haven't been clicking and how to resolve the root of why you're struggling.
00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:30.000
Unconditional self-love isn't just a nice idea if you truly want to be free.
00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:34.720
It's the missing piece and the foundation for everything you desire.
00:12:34.720 --> 00:12:38.720
And you don't have to do or figure everything out on your own.
00:12:38.720 --> 00:12:47.919
You deserve clear, comprehensive, and empowering step-by-step guidance in self-love, self-healing, and spiritual growth.

Your links are in the show notes.
00:13:24.960 --> 00:13:27.440
Now, let's get back to the episode.
00:13:27.440 --> 00:13:31.279
Expansion is fueled by self-love and curiosity.
00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:36.639
Rejection prevention is fueled by fear and unintegrated shadow.
00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:42.960
Expansion allows you to be loved while evolving, while changing, while being imperfect.
00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:51.840
Rejection prevention thinks love is what you are allowed to receive only after you've changed enough to be worthy.
00:13:51.840 --> 00:14:02.639
That's why it feels like there's always more to heal, more to improve, more to unpack, more quote unquote blocks to get past, and more quote unquote tests to pass.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:04.720
You're not actually expanding.
00:14:04.720 --> 00:14:13.200
You're putting in the effort to evolve, but the belief underneath the effort is that you aren't good enough or you're not lovable as you are.
00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:20.000
And until that belief is acknowledged and released, you're always going to be operating from a false truth.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:28.000
A false truth that keeps you trapped in scarcity and reinforces the idea that you are not safe as you are.
00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:43.919
So of course, you keep striving and you keep struggling and defending your struggling and hardly resting and hardly enjoying yourself, hardly loving yourself or your life, even after everything that you've done, all the things that you've tried.
00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:49.440
This is when the pursuit of self-improvement separates you from your highest and source self.
00:14:49.440 --> 00:14:56.000
You're exhausted and not rejuvenated because that separation grows and grows.
00:14:56.000 --> 00:15:01.759
You think you're growing, but you're actually moving farther and farther away from your true self.
00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:09.919
When you're the one trying to heal and the one judging if the healing is good enough, how can you, how can you enjoy the process?
00:15:09.919 --> 00:15:13.519
If you're not enjoying the healing, then you're not healing, friend.
00:15:13.519 --> 00:15:16.080
Your body is stressed, right?
00:15:16.080 --> 00:15:19.919
Not relaxed, and thus not safe, not at ease.
00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:25.519
Healing has just become another mirror to the judgment that you think is necessary in life.
00:15:25.519 --> 00:15:35.279
When love and safety were conditional for you growing up, your nervous system learned that being loved is something you earn through correcting yourself for others.
00:15:35.279 --> 00:15:42.720
And that conditioning doesn't just like poof vanish because you started calling the trauma response healing.
00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:52.720
I spent most of my life trying to appear perfect because that was one of the primary survival strategies that I developed in response to all of the trauma of my childhood.
00:15:52.720 --> 00:15:56.240
I was criticized for everything as a child.
00:15:56.240 --> 00:16:05.200
My parents were not loving, they were not affectionate, they were not gentle, they were cruel, they were cold, they were dismissive.
00:16:05.200 --> 00:16:07.519
Nothing was ever good enough for them.
00:16:07.519 --> 00:16:12.480
And so I translated that to mean that I was not good enough to be loved.
00:16:12.480 --> 00:16:17.440
And that belief ran my healing for years at the start.
00:16:17.440 --> 00:16:21.039
I thought healing meant that I could finally be perfect, right?
00:16:21.039 --> 00:16:22.000
Be lovable.
00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:30.320
But what I didn't realize until years later, until my late husband was dying of cancer, is that I was already perfect.
00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:37.759
And I needed to tell myself that, not hear that from my parents, not from my husband, not from anyone else.
00:16:37.759 --> 00:16:54.799
When I started to heal from that, knowing that I was already perfect because I was already whole, already lovable, my nervous system was freed from that urgency loop and finally started to breathe for the first time, maybe ever.
00:16:54.799 --> 00:16:57.120
And that's when I began to heal.
00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:06.480
Your body is not responding to what you do, it is responding to the relationship that you have with yourself while you do it.
00:17:06.480 --> 00:17:14.400
That's why you can eat organic kale, drink your green juices every single day, and still not be holistically healthy.
00:17:14.400 --> 00:17:20.240
Like journaling can be an act of self-contact or performed self-awareness.
00:17:20.240 --> 00:17:27.440
Breath work can be genuine stress release or like extra tension through forced control.
00:17:27.440 --> 00:17:34.720
Meditation can be a connection with your highest self or more numbing to escape your lower self.
00:17:34.720 --> 00:17:43.119
The practice can look the same on the outside, but your body knows the difference from what's happening on the inside.
00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:55.200
When the relationship driving your healing is based on self-rejection, self-judgment, self-abandonment, self-accusation, your body is experiencing severe tension because it's hearing the message.
00:17:55.200 --> 00:17:59.599
I need to find what's wrong with me, I need to correct it before something bad happens.
00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:07.519
So of course, your body is going to organize around that feeling, that panic, that urgency, that fear.
00:18:07.519 --> 00:18:11.440
That's why the moment you stop meditating, you're already braced again.
00:18:11.440 --> 00:18:27.519
Shoulders are up here, your jaw goes back to tightening, your shoulders reform those knots, your stomach contracts, your breathing gets shallow again, because your system is in a constant preparation mode for a threat that hasn't even happened yet.
00:18:27.519 --> 00:18:32.559
Because you're relating to yourself in a way that tells your body that something is always wrong.
00:18:32.559 --> 00:18:35.759
And that's not like some random physical response.
00:18:35.759 --> 00:18:41.519
That's your body expressing the exact truth of the relationship you have with yourself.
00:18:41.519 --> 00:18:45.920
It's the truth of how you feel about yourself, how you feel about your body.
00:18:45.920 --> 00:18:49.599
Your body does not lie about whether or not it feels safe.
00:18:49.599 --> 00:18:51.599
There's no, there's no lying there.
00:18:51.599 --> 00:19:03.839
And now you can tell your conscious mind, I'm healing, I'm healing, I'm healing all day long, but your body will tell you whether that healing actually feels like love or if it feels like punishment.
00:19:03.839 --> 00:19:09.519
You may think that finding the right practice or the right protocol is like the missing thing that your body needs.
00:19:09.519 --> 00:19:20.640
But what your body needs is to feel safe in you and loved by you so it can stop bracing against the way that you are relating to yourself.
00:19:20.640 --> 00:19:25.920
Now, this is not an invitation to blame yourself or to shame yourself more.
00:19:25.920 --> 00:19:43.680
This is an invitation to start healing in a way that feels good to you, feels good to your body, in a way that replenishes you instead of exhausts you, in a way that connects you to your highest self and not reinforces your wound itself.
00:19:43.680 --> 00:19:55.119
Trauma responses don't resolve with willpower or journaling or pretending that they are not a big deal, or with like positive affirmations, because trauma lives in your body.
00:19:55.119 --> 00:20:04.880
It resolves when the wound it was formed from is given love, not punishment, not rejection and judgment.
00:20:04.880 --> 00:20:24.319
It resolves when your body understands that past pain is over and it feels safe in the moment right now, when your nervous system finally feels like it is out of danger because you have stopped using healing as another way to hustle and struggle through life, and you start using it to love yourself more.
00:20:24.319 --> 00:20:30.799
You don't earn the right to love yourself after you have suffered through enough healing and self-improvement.
00:20:30.799 --> 00:20:37.359
Self-love is the condition that makes healing coherent and possible in the first place.
00:20:37.359 --> 00:20:40.880
It's what makes healing joyful as it's meant to be.
00:20:40.880 --> 00:20:44.799
Your liberation is not hard won after struggling.
00:20:44.799 --> 00:20:52.319
That's a massive distortion that has been normalized for too long by too many people because freedom feels joyful.
00:20:52.319 --> 00:20:58.400
And healing is by definition, by definition, a reclamation of your freedom.
00:20:58.400 --> 00:21:04.720
So joy and healing go hand in hand, not just conceptually, but physiologically.
00:21:04.720 --> 00:21:11.119
So when you treat yourself as someone who needs to be fixed, your body is going to behave as if it is broken.
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:22.640
When you treat yourself as someone who's already whole, who's just resolving your past, releasing old pain, then your body behaves as if it's coherent and capable.
00:21:22.640 --> 00:21:27.119
The former traps your nervous system in dysregulation and stress.
00:21:27.119 --> 00:21:31.759
The latter frees your nervous system to function optimally.
00:21:31.759 --> 00:21:35.759
That's what I call, what I call the love first protocol.
00:21:35.759 --> 00:21:40.319
People think self-love is like the reward that you gain from healing.
00:21:40.319 --> 00:21:48.000
But unconditional self love is actually the foundation that healing must be built on.
00:21:48.000 --> 00:21:52.000
Without it, everything you do is driven by the belief that something is wrong with you.
00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:57.359
And that belief will distort every breakthrough, every meditation, every practice.
00:21:57.359 --> 00:21:59.680
That's why self improvement feels like a grind.
00:21:59.680 --> 00:22:05.519
Because your body can't heal in an environment that treats it like a problem and a prison.
00:22:05.519 --> 00:22:14.720
When you heal with self-love as the foundation, healing stops being an obligation and becomes something your body actually wants to participate in.
00:22:14.720 --> 00:22:17.519
And that's what I call the joy principle.
00:22:17.519 --> 00:22:26.319
Healing cannot be both a self-punishment system, which is a prison, and a liberation for your highest and sore self.
00:22:26.319 --> 00:22:28.319
It can't be both things at the same time.
00:22:28.319 --> 00:22:39.920
If your healing practice consistently feels like pressure, dread, like a duty, that's a sign that your relationship to your healing needs more love, not more force discipline.
00:22:39.920 --> 00:22:47.599
People also think joy is a reward or like a luxury after the struggle is over, after all the hard work.
00:22:47.599 --> 00:22:51.359
But the truth is joy is what tells your body that you are safe.
00:22:51.359 --> 00:23:01.839
When your body feels safe, it naturally, naturally, on its own, you don't gotta tell it to do this, it does it on its own, turns on and optimizes healing mode.
00:23:01.839 --> 00:23:10.720
So embracing ease is what conditions your body to stop the urgency loop of self-correction that turns into self-punishment.
00:23:10.720 --> 00:23:17.440
And love is what tells your body that healing isn't just another means for surviving through life.
00:23:17.440 --> 00:23:33.839
So the next time you feel the urge to fix something in yourself, I want you to pause before you reach for that book, before you press play on that video or start journaling or whatever practice it is, just notice where the urge is sourced from.
00:23:33.839 --> 00:23:37.039
Notice who and what is reaching.
00:23:37.039 --> 00:23:39.440
Are you reaching for yourself with love?
00:23:39.440 --> 00:23:46.960
Or are you reaching for something out there to fill some deficit you believe you have so that you can be lovable?
00:23:46.960 --> 00:23:50.240
That first reach is life expanding.
00:23:50.240 --> 00:23:53.440
The second reach is life diminishing.
00:23:53.440 --> 00:23:57.119
One replenishes your energy, the other depletes it.
00:23:57.119 --> 00:24:14.559
And so that pause is your opportunity to transform your relationship with yourself from self-surveillance to true self-contact, from fixing and proving to relaxing and knowing, from earning love to remembering that you are love.
