Greetings and welcome to the Saving Delaware History podcast: episode one. I’m your host, Madeline Messer and this podcast is generously sponsored by Delaware’s Historical and Cultural Affairs. The HCA preserves and interprets everything of historical and societal importance in the state of Delaware. Generally, each episode here will cover a location, project, or research, including origins of the endeavor, interviews with experts, and its largest impacts. I’ll try to highlight any stories or anecdotes that I find particularly neat.
By far the largest undertaking of the HCA is its museums. The New Castle Court House Museum, John Dickinson Plantation, Johnson Victrola Museum, and Zwaanendael Museum each commemorate an important time or person in Delaware history. Whether it be the location of the trials of famous white abolitionists, the childhood home of a prominent Founding Father, the accomplishments of a Grammy-winner, or the first European settlement in Delaware, these museums encapsulate people and events that retain their relevance over decades. The HCA conducts research at each of its sites to broaden the base of knowledge it provides to the public and expand our understanding of how Delaware has influenced history.
The HCA also has various other galleries and historic sites devoted to other aspects of Delaware society. These can be discovered on their website: history.delaware.gov or on social media @savingdelawarehistory. Also up for your exploration are the myriad of volunteer and interning opportunities to get you involved in the discovery of Delaware history. Or, if that’s not your kind of thing, keep listening to this podcast and we’ll bring the history to you.
See you next time and thanks for listening.
