ABOUT THIS EPISODE
This weeks Right-Sized Reflection solocast is going deep. We discuss how to stop treating wellness like a race back to our younger selves, and start building the strength, energy, and resilience to live the life ahead. I share a simple question that right-sizes everything, from beauty and skincare to relationships, home, and the space we give our future selves.
• asking “Does this still fit?” as a midlife wellness filter
• shifting from appearance goals to capacity goals like strength, balance, sleep, and resilience
• redefining beauty as care rather than criticism
• reflecting on skincare rituals, collagen curiosity, and an inside-out approach
• naming relationships as a core wellness factor that affects energy and health
• right-sizing relationships with nuance instead of quick labels
• using the two-room rule to care for who you are and who you’re becoming
• doing one small thing today that your future self will be glad you did
If this episode made you think about wellness differently, send it to a friend you want beside you in this next chapter. And then ask her the question I'm leaving you with today. Who are you becoming? And are you making enough room for her?

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.080
Hey Fearless Friends, it's Amy and welcome back to the Right Size Life.
00:00:04.400 --> 00:00:08.720
I've been thinking a lot lately about what it actually means to age well.
00:00:08.880 --> 00:00:13.599
And I don't mean how we look when we age, although I'm going to talk about that today too.
00:00:13.839 --> 00:00:28.719
I mean the bigger question of what it looks like to take care of ourselves as we move through different seasons of our lives, because I'm realizing more and more that wellness is so much bigger than the things we tend to put into that category.
00:00:29.280 --> 00:00:32.320
We talk about exercise and nutrition and sleep.
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:35.920
We talk about supplements and hydration and skincare.
00:00:36.079 --> 00:00:41.520
And yes, all of those things matter to me, probably more now than they ever have.
00:00:41.840 --> 00:00:46.960
But when I think about creating a right-sized life, I'm thinking about the whole person.
00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:49.920
I'm thinking about our bodies and our health.
00:00:50.240 --> 00:01:05.680
But I'm also thinking about the relationships we're carrying, the energy we're giving away, the spaces we're living in, the expectations we're still trying to meet, the way we speak to ourselves, and whether we've actually made room in our lives for the person we're becoming.
00:01:06.079 --> 00:01:15.760
Because wellness isn't just about adding years to our lives, it's about creating a life we have the capacity and the desire to fully live.
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:19.599
And that feels like a very different conversation.
00:01:19.840 --> 00:01:27.599
One of the questions I come back to again and again in my own life and throughout creating the right size life is incredibly simple.
00:01:27.840 --> 00:01:29.040
Does this still fit?
00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:32.959
And lately I've been asking that question about wellness too.
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:38.480
Does the definition of wellness I had in my 30s still fit me today?
00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:42.799
Does the way I once thought about my body still fit?
00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:46.319
Does my old definition of beauty fit?
00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:51.120
Do all of my relationships fit in the same way they once did?
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:55.840
Does the way I've structured my home support who I am now?
00:01:56.400 --> 00:02:05.760
And maybe the most important question of all, am I creating room for who I'm becoming, or am I spending all of my energy trying to maintain who I've always been?
00:02:06.239 --> 00:02:09.280
Those are very different ways to live.
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:12.800
Wellness isn't about getting the old you back.
00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:22.560
I think for many women, there is this subtle message that the goal of midlife and beyond wellness is somehow to get back to who we used to be.
00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:27.120
Get your old body back or get your old energy back.
00:02:27.919 --> 00:02:30.000
Get your metabolism back.
00:02:30.479 --> 00:02:32.319
Get your younger skin back.
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:35.039
Get back into those genes.
00:02:35.919 --> 00:02:43.680
And I don't know about you, but I'm really not interested in spending the next chapter of my life trying to get back to a previous one.
00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:48.080
I loved many things about the woman I was at 30 and 40 and 50.
00:02:48.159 --> 00:02:51.759
And she's raising three kids and navigating moves and building a family.
00:02:51.919 --> 00:02:57.280
She had a tremendous amount of energy, although I'm not sure she appreciated it at the time.
00:02:57.520 --> 00:03:04.800
She was figuring things out, making mistakes, trying again, taking care of a lot of people, and becoming the woman I am now.
00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:08.879
I'm grateful for her, but I don't want to be her again.
00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:12.479
I want to take really good care of the woman I am today.
00:03:12.719 --> 00:03:16.719
And that shift has changed the way I think about wellness.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:22.000
I'm much less interested in a number on a scale than I am in strength.
00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:25.360
I'm interested in flexibility and balance and energy.
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:27.280
I'm interested in sleeping well.
00:03:27.439 --> 00:03:36.319
I'm interested in being able to travel and walk through a city all day and get on the floor someday with grandchildren, and most importantly, get back up.
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:41.199
I'm interested in resilience because life will continue to surprise us.
00:03:41.360 --> 00:03:44.479
And I want to have some reserves when it does.
00:03:44.800 --> 00:03:49.919
So wellness for me has become less about appearance and much more about capacity.
00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:53.840
Can this body support the life I'm asking it to live?
00:03:54.080 --> 00:04:02.400
And that question has become especially meaningful to me because I've had moments when my health forced me to stop and pay attention.
00:04:02.639 --> 00:04:11.120
Those moments have reminded me that we can spend years creating this beautiful next chapter, more freedom, more travel, more connection, more purpose.
00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:18.240
But if we aren't caring for the body that's going to carry us through it, we're missing an important piece of the equation.
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:21.360
And then there's beauty.
00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:30.959
There's another part of this conversation that feels particularly for full circle for me right now, because my own relationship with skincare really began with my mom.
00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:34.160
My mom loved skincare and she had beautiful skin.
00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:37.759
She was curious about it in a way that makes me smile now when I think about it.
00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:44.079
She was always reading an article about a new ingredient or discovering some product she thought I needed to know about.
00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:48.399
And she'd send me things to read or little samples she wanted me to try.
00:04:48.639 --> 00:04:56.399
Whenever I came home to visit, there would inevitably be a washcloth waiting for me and some new product she discovered.
00:04:56.639 --> 00:05:01.279
And my mom was always talking about collagen, even way back when.
00:05:01.519 --> 00:05:02.160
Always.
00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:07.600
I probably only half listened at the time because that's what we do with our moms sometimes.
00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:11.279
We assume they'll always be there to tell us again.
00:05:11.519 --> 00:05:17.600
But now, all these years later, I understand, I understand that those little rituals, I understand them differently.
00:05:17.839 --> 00:05:20.639
I don't think my mom was obsessed with trying to stay young.
00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:23.839
I think she was curious about taking care of herself.
00:05:24.079 --> 00:05:34.879
She wanted to understand what she was using and why, and she enjoyed the ritual, and she passed some of the curiosity along to me without either of us realizing it.
00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:38.800
That's why this new chapter of my wellness journey feels so personal.
00:05:39.199 --> 00:05:56.560
I've been using Make Wellness Peptides, Natural Peptides consistently for more than 18 months, and now Make is moving into beauty with products that bring together precision natural peptides, naturally sourced and derived ingredients, and an inside-out, outside-in approach to beauty and wellness.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:06:03.279
When I first started learning about what they were creating, I immediately thought of my mom.
00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:07.279
I could almost hear her saying, okay, but what's in it?
00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:08.480
What does it do?
00:06:08.639 --> 00:06:10.800
And do you have a sample for me?
00:06:11.120 --> 00:06:14.079
And yes, mom, there's collagen involved.
00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:16.800
Talk about a full circle moment.
00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:25.839
But here's what interests me even more than a new skincare product: the idea that beauty doesn't have to be separate from wellness.
00:06:26.399 --> 00:06:31.519
For me, skincare doesn't have to come from a place of criticizing what I see in the mirror.
00:06:31.680 --> 00:06:34.480
It can simply be another way I take care of myself.
00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:38.720
I can appreciate the space and still want to care for my skin.
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:42.879
I can embrace aging and still love a great product.
00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:51.279
I can celebrate the years represented in the mirror without believing I have to surrender my curiosity about how I feel or how I look.
00:06:51.519 --> 00:06:54.240
Those things can exist together.
00:06:54.480 --> 00:06:56.079
I don't want to chase younger.
00:06:56.240 --> 00:06:57.920
I want to support healthier.
00:06:58.079 --> 00:07:01.360
And that is a much more right-sized definition of beauty for me.
00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:04.480
But wellness also lives in our relationships.
00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:13.519
Here's where I think the conversation gets more interesting, because we rarely put relationships into the wellness category.
00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:15.120
But we should.
00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:25.600
Think about how differently you feel after spending an hour with someone who knows you, sees you, makes you laugh, and allows you to completely be yourself.
00:07:25.839 --> 00:07:37.439
Now think about how you feel after spending time in a relationship where you're constantly monitoring yourself, overexplaining, performing, fixing, rescuing, or trying to keep someone else happy.
00:07:37.759 --> 00:07:40.240
Our relationships affect our wellness.
00:07:41.040 --> 00:07:47.360
And one of the things I've had to learn in this season is that relationships can be right-sized too.
00:07:47.680 --> 00:07:55.839
That doesn't mean cutting people out of our lives because they've had a bad day or deciding that everyone who challenges us is toxic.
00:07:56.079 --> 00:08:00.639
I actually think we become a little too quick sometimes to use language like that.
00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:05.040
Right-sizing a relationship is much more nuanced.
00:08:05.519 --> 00:08:09.040
It's recognizing that relationships have seasons.
00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:15.759
Some people are meant to sit very close to us in one season and may naturally move a little further out in another.
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:18.399
Some friendships can go months without contact.
00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:22.079
And the minute you're together, you're right back where you left off.
00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:29.839
Some relationships need more attention because we've been so busy that we've neglected someone who actually matters deeply to us.
00:08:30.319 --> 00:08:37.679
And sometimes we realize we've been maintaining a relationship almost entirely out of history or obligation.
00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:42.399
That's when I think we need to get curious rather than judgmental.
00:08:42.639 --> 00:08:45.120
Who allows me to be fully myself?
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:47.279
Where is their mutual effort?
00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:50.000
Who do I want to make more room for?
00:08:50.720 --> 00:08:57.279
And maybe even where do I need to change my expectations rather than change the person?
00:08:58.159 --> 00:09:03.679
I've reached a point in my life where I don't need hundreds of people around me to feel connected.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:05.759
I value depth differently now.
00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:22.960
I value the people with whom I can sit in the quiet, the people who celebrate the good things without competition, the people who show up when life gets messy, and the people who allow me to evolve rather than expecting me to remain the same woman they've always known.
00:09:23.360 --> 00:09:25.840
That to me is wellness too.
00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:34.639
Because taking care of yourself isn't about what you consume, it's also about what and who you continually give your energy to.
00:09:34.799 --> 00:09:36.159
The two-room roll.
00:09:36.480 --> 00:09:41.279
This brings me to one of my favorite strategies in creating the right size life.
00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:43.120
The two-room roll.
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:47.360
I think we all need two rooms in our lives.
00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:53.519
Now, before you start telling me you don't have two spare rooms in your house, I'm not talking literally.
00:09:53.759 --> 00:10:01.840
A room can be a corner, a chair, a desk, a notebook, a block of time, or even an emotional space that you've intentionally protected.
00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:08.960
But the idea is this we need one room for who we are today, and one room for who we're becoming.
00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:13.759
The first room says, this is my life right now, and I'm going to care for it.
00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:22.480
This body, these relationships, this home, this season, this woman.
00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:28.399
I'm not going to spend all my time wishing she were younger or different or somewhere else.
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:30.480
I'm going to support her.
00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:33.840
That's the room of acceptance and care.
00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:36.559
But then we need another room.
00:10:37.200 --> 00:10:38.080
The second room.
00:10:38.960 --> 00:10:41.120
It asks, who am I becoming?
00:10:42.080 --> 00:10:43.840
What am I curious about?
00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:46.159
What do I want to learn?
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:49.200
What part of myself hasn't had enough room yet?
00:10:49.919 --> 00:10:52.240
Maybe it's the woman who wants to write.
00:10:53.200 --> 00:10:57.279
Maybe it's the woman who wants to become physically stronger.
00:10:57.600 --> 00:11:00.480
Maybe it's the woman who wants to travel alone.
00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:05.039
Maybe it's the woman who wants to start something new professionally.
00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:14.080
Maybe it's the woman who wants to create art or learn pickleball or finally become comfortable walking into a room where she doesn't know anyone.
00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:17.519
We spend so many years building rooms for other people.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:19.840
Our kids have their rooms.
00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:25.759
Our careers take up space.
00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:28.960
Our responsibilities take up space.
00:11:29.360 --> 00:11:36.240
And somewhere along the way, particularly for women, we can forget that our becoming needs space too.
00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:41.120
That's why the two-room rule isn't really about decorating.
00:11:41.440 --> 00:11:42.879
It's about permission.
00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:46.080
One space says, I value who I am.
00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:50.320
The other says, I'm excited about who I'm becoming.
00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:53.200
And I think we need both to be well.
00:11:54.480 --> 00:11:56.639
What are you doing for your future self?
00:11:57.440 --> 00:12:05.039
That's why one of my favorite questions and my energy audit is what did I do today for my future self?
00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:14.879
I love that question because it changes wellness from something we do because we're dissatisfied with ourselves into something we do because we value ourselves.
00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:19.039
My future self needs me to move today.
00:12:19.600 --> 00:12:21.360
She needs me to drink the water.
00:12:21.919 --> 00:12:24.399
She needs me to make the doctor's appointment.
00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:26.799
She needs me to sleep.
00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:29.759
She needs me to build muscle.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:32.799
She needs me to take care of my skin.
00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:35.840
She needs me to invest in the friendships that matter.
00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:37.759
She may need me to say no.
00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:40.559
She may need me to try something new.
00:12:41.679 --> 00:12:47.519
And some days she needs me to sit down and recover instead of proving how much I can accomplish.
00:12:48.240 --> 00:12:52.080
But those little choices don't always give us an immediate result.
00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:54.159
But that's the point.
00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:56.720
We're building reserves.
00:12:57.600 --> 00:13:03.519
Physical reserves, emotional reserves, relational reserves.
00:13:04.399 --> 00:13:07.759
And maybe even reserves of curiosity and joy.
00:13:08.320 --> 00:13:11.519
That's what I want my wellness practice to give me.
00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:17.600
Not another impossible standard to meet, but more capacity to live.
00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:20.799
So here's what I want you to think about this week.
00:13:21.039 --> 00:13:24.000
Instead of asking yourself, how can I look younger?
00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:26.240
Or how do I get back to who I used to be?
00:13:26.480 --> 00:13:28.879
I want you to ask something very different.
00:13:29.840 --> 00:13:32.000
How do I want to feel as I get older?
00:13:32.559 --> 00:13:34.320
Maybe your word is strong.
00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:36.080
Maybe it's vibrant.
00:13:36.320 --> 00:13:37.840
Maybe it's connected.
00:13:38.720 --> 00:13:40.320
Maybe it's peaceful?
00:13:41.200 --> 00:13:42.960
Maybe it's curious.
00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:44.720
Or maybe it's confident.
00:13:45.440 --> 00:13:46.799
Maybe it's radiant.
00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:52.559
And then ask yourself, does the way I'm living today support that woman?
00:13:52.720 --> 00:13:54.799
Do your wellness have it support her?
00:13:55.519 --> 00:13:57.679
Do your relationships support her?
00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:00.720
Does the way you speak to yourself support her?
00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:04.159
Does your physical environment have any room for her?
00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:11.360
And have you created even one little corner, literal or otherwise, for her to begin showing up?
00:14:11.600 --> 00:14:14.080
Because that's really what right sizing is.
00:14:14.159 --> 00:14:16.240
It's not shrinking your life.
00:14:16.559 --> 00:14:19.120
It's not giving everything away.
00:14:19.440 --> 00:14:22.720
And it certainly isn't trying to become less.
00:14:22.960 --> 00:14:30.240
It's intentionally creating a life that fits who you are now while leaving enough room for who you're still becoming.
00:14:30.799 --> 00:14:42.879
And as I think about my mom, those little samples, the washcloth waiting for me, and all of those conversations about collagen, I understand something now that I couldn't have understood then.
00:14:43.759 --> 00:14:46.960
Maybe she wasn't teaching me how to fight aging.
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:53.200
Maybe she was teaching me to stay curious about caring for myself as I aged.
00:14:53.440 --> 00:14:55.440
And there's a difference.
00:14:55.759 --> 00:14:58.639
So yes, mom, you were right about the collagen.
00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:02.720
But you were also right about something much, much bigger.
00:15:03.679 --> 00:15:05.519
Taking care of ourselves matters.
00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:18.320
Not because we're trying to hold on to who we were, but because there's still so much ahead of us that deserves the strongest, healthiest, most connected, and most curious version of who we are now.
00:15:19.039 --> 00:15:22.080
So this week, fearless friends, find your two rooms.
00:15:23.440 --> 00:15:25.200
Take care of the woman who's here.
00:15:25.919 --> 00:15:28.399
Make some room for the woman who's coming.
00:15:29.440 --> 00:15:33.440
Pay attention to the people who help you feel most like yourself.
00:15:33.759 --> 00:15:39.039
And do one thing today that your future self will someday be very glad you did.
00:15:39.360 --> 00:15:42.799
Because a right-sized life isn't about having less.
00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:50.399
It's about having what fits and having enough strength, energy, connection, and curiosity to fully live it.
00:15:51.120 --> 00:15:53.759
Thanks for sending spending these few minutes with me today.
00:15:54.320 --> 00:16:01.039
If this episode made you think about wellness differently, send it to a friend you want beside you in this next chapter.
00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:03.840
And then ask her the question I'm leaving you with today.
00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:06.000
Who are you becoming?
00:16:06.559 --> 00:16:08.559
And are you making enough room for her?
00:16:09.519 --> 00:16:11.919
I'll see you next time on the Right Sized Life.
