Research has shown that pushing your sets to, or close to, failure is one of the strongest drivers for muscle growth. However, lifting or failure is a bit too vague and subjective than “challenging your work capacity” which is much more simple and direct for creating a stimulus for building muscle.
It also helps you recognize which exercises are going to be the best for helping you build muscle.
