Watching someone else get the credit can hit harder than we want to admit. When the spotlight shifts away from us, it is easy to spiral into comparison, jealousy, and that quiet question behind the smile: why them, not me?
We stay in the Gospel of John and move into John 3:22-30, where John the Baptist faces that exact moment. His disciples are stressed because Jesus is drawing bigger crowds and more attention. Instead of competing, John shows a different kind of strength: he remembers his purpose, he refuses to build his identity on recognition, and he actually rejoices that people are going to Jesus. We talk through the wedding picture John uses, why it is such a sharp check on our motives, and how Christian humility is not self-hate but a clear-eyed way of putting Jesus first.
John 3:30 sits at the center: “He must become greater, I must become less.” We unpack what that looks like in everyday discipleship, from decision-making to relationships to the way we handle praise at work, in school, or in church ministry. If you have ever struggled to serve faithfully when nobody notices, or felt threatened by someone else’s growth, this conversation gives you language, perspective, and practical questions to bring before God.
If this encouraged you, subscribe, share it with a friend who feels overlooked, and leave a review so more people can find the show. Where do you most feel the pull to chase recognition?

00:00:26.559 --> 00:00:27.760
What's up guys?
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:30.800
Welcome back to the Narrow Path Podcast.
00:00:30.960 --> 00:00:36.560
My name is Trey, and I am so excited for today's episode.
00:00:36.719 --> 00:00:42.399
But first and foremost, if this is your first time listening, I just want to say thank you for checking us out.
00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:45.200
And hopefully you enjoy what you hear.
00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:48.799
Uh, for context, we've been studying the Gospel of John.
00:00:49.039 --> 00:00:54.880
Right now we are in chapter 3, and we are a new podcast, relatively new.
00:00:54.960 --> 00:01:17.439
Um, so this is our first study that we're doing, and what we do here is just read scripture and really talk about what it means to walk the neuropath, to follow Jesus with our whole hearts and talk about what scripture means for us in our day-to-day lives outside of Sundays.
00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:24.959
If this is not your first time listening, if you are a returning listener, I just want to say thank you for your continual support.
00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:34.640
I really appreciate each and every one of you guys, and I hope that we can continue to grow as a community as we study through scripture.
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:49.120
So, like I said, we've been walking through the Gospel of John, and in our last episode, we looked at John chapter 3, verses 1 through 21, and the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus.
00:01:49.599 --> 00:02:00.000
We talked about what it means to be born again, why we need the work of the Holy Spirit, and how God showed his love for the world by sending his son to save us.
00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:07.760
Today we're going to continue in John chapter 3, but the scene shifts a little bit.
00:02:08.159 --> 00:02:20.719
Instead of focusing on a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, we're going to look at John the Baptist and how he responds when Jesus begins receiving more attention than he does.
00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:29.360
And I think this passage is especially important because it challenges something that most of us struggle with at some point.
00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:32.080
Our desire to be noticed.
00:02:32.479 --> 00:02:36.000
We want people to recognize our hard work.
00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:40.560
We want to know that what we're doing matters.
00:02:40.879 --> 00:02:47.599
We want people to appreciate us and acknowledge what we bring to the table.
00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:52.240
And there's nothing automatically wrong with wanting to be appreciated.
00:02:52.719 --> 00:03:00.800
But what happens when our desire for recognition starts getting in the way of what God is doing?
00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:06.800
What happens when somebody else gets the opportunity that we want it?
00:03:07.120 --> 00:03:11.039
What happens when someone else receives the credit?
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:17.439
What happens when the person standing next to us starts getting more attention than we do?
00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:20.000
How do we respond?
00:03:21.199 --> 00:03:23.039
Do we become jealous?
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:26.960
Do we start comparing ourselves to them?
00:03:27.680 --> 00:03:30.560
Do we try to prove that we're just as important?
00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:40.319
Or can we genuinely celebrate what God is doing through somebody else, even when it means we aren't the center of attention?
00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:45.039
That's where John the Baptist gives us an incredible example.
00:03:45.439 --> 00:03:52.800
In John 3, verse 30, he makes a statement that has become one of the most well-known verses in this passage.
00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:55.680
He must become greater.
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:06.560
What does it look like to make Jesus greater in our lives?
00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:09.360
And what does it mean for us to become less?
00:04:09.599 --> 00:04:11.039
Let's get into it.
00:04:11.599 --> 00:04:33.199
So in in John 3, verses 22 through 26, John begins John begins this section by telling us that Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside where Jesus spent time with them and people were being baptized.
00:04:33.519 --> 00:04:38.720
John the Baptist was also baptizing people in another location nearby.
00:04:39.040 --> 00:04:50.160
And John mentions that this was before John the Baptist was put into prison, which helps give us a timeline of the events taking place.
00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:56.480
Both ministries were active and people were responding to their messages.
00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:10.399
Then in verse 25, it tells us that a discussion arose between some of John the Baptist's disciples and a certain Jew about ceremonial washing.
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:15.759
We're not giving all the deep details of that conversation.
00:05:16.240 --> 00:05:20.639
But what happens next is what I want us to pay attention to.
00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:33.360
John's disciples come to him and say that Jesus, the man John had previously testified about, is now baptizing, and everyone is going to him.
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:37.040
Now think about how that statement sounds.
00:05:37.279 --> 00:05:42.160
They're essentially saying, John, remember that man you were talking about?
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:49.120
He's out there doing what we're doing, and now everybody is going to him instead of us.
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.399
They seem concerned that Jesus is attracting more attention.
00:05:54.720 --> 00:05:59.759
And if we're honest, we can understand why they may feel like that.
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:07.199
Imagine spending time working towards something, building a ministry, serving in a particular role.
00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:13.439
You've invested your time and energy into it, you've watched people respond to what you're doing.
00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:19.839
Then somebody else comes along the way and suddenly the attention starts shifting towards them.
00:06:20.639 --> 00:06:23.519
That can be difficult to deal with, honestly.
00:06:23.839 --> 00:06:27.600
Maybe you've experienced something similar at work.
00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:35.759
You've been putting in the effort doing what you're supposed to do and trying to make a difference.
00:06:36.720 --> 00:06:45.120
Then someone else gets recognized for their work and you start wondering why nobody seems to notice what you're doing.
00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:48.800
Maybe you've experienced it in school.
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:56.079
You work hard on an assignment or a project, but someone else receives the praise.
00:06:56.879 --> 00:07:00.319
Or maybe you've experienced it in church or ministry.
00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:05.920
You volunteer, you serve every week, you show up when people need help.
00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:13.040
But then somebody gets the opportunity to lead, teach, preach, or take a role that you really want it.
00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:20.639
And instead of celebrating what God is doing, you start comparing yourself to them.
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:25.199
You begin asking questions like, why them?
00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:26.639
Why not me?
00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:30.560
What do they have that I don't?
00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:38.079
Before long, someone somebody else's success starts to feel like your own failure.
00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:40.959
But here's something we need to understand.
00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:46.720
Someone else receiving recognition doesn't mean that God has forgotten about you.
00:07:47.360 --> 00:07:52.079
Their opportunity doesn't automatically mean your opportunity is gone.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:55.360
Their growth doesn't mean that you're failing.
00:07:55.519 --> 00:08:01.360
And their success doesn't take away the value of what God has called you to do.
00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:16.079
And that's exactly why John's response to his disciples is so powerful.
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:24.480
They come to him concerned that Jesus is gaining followers, but but John doesn't react the way that we might expect.
00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:31.279
Earlier in John's gospel, he had already made it clear that he wasn't the Messiah.
00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:34.799
He was the one sent ahead to prepare the way for him.
00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:42.399
Now his disciples become concerned about Jesus receiving more attention.
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:45.200
John doesn't forget his purpose.
00:09:45.519 --> 00:09:50.720
He recognizes that God is doing exactly what God intended to do from the beginning.
00:09:51.200 --> 00:09:55.039
And I think this is a lesson that we need to take seriously.
00:09:55.279 --> 00:10:07.120
Sometimes we become so focused on what we want to accomplish that we forget to ask whether we're making or we're actually seeking God's will.
00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:15.840
We start looking at our plans, our goals, our dreams, and our expectations.
00:10:16.720 --> 00:10:22.159
And when things don't happen the way that we thought they would, we become frustrated.
00:10:22.799 --> 00:10:27.759
We might even start believing that we're being overlooked.
00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:33.519
But what if the situation isn't about being overlooked at all?
00:10:34.399 --> 00:10:40.240
What if God is teaching us to be faithful in the place where He has us right now?
00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:48.559
What if the role we're serving in today is preparing us for something else tomorrow?
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:58.720
And what if the person receiving the attention right now is simply doing the work God has given them to do?
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:04.080
We don't always know how God is working behind the scenes.
00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:12.639
We don't know what he's doing in another person's life, and we don't know everything he might be teaching us through our own circumstances.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:18.720
But we can choose to be faithful with what he has placed in front of us.
00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:22.559
That doesn't mean we shouldn't have goals.
00:11:22.799 --> 00:11:28.799
It doesn't mean we shouldn't work hard, develop our abilities, or pursue opportunities.
00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:30.799
Those things can be good.
00:11:31.759 --> 00:11:36.720
The question is whether we're pursuing them with the right heart.
00:11:37.440 --> 00:11:44.159
Are we trying to use our abilities to serve God and other people?
00:11:44.960 --> 00:11:48.399
Or are we mainly trying to prove that we're important?
00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:53.679
Are we willing to serve when nobody else knows?
00:11:54.480 --> 00:12:03.200
Are we willing to help somebody else succeed without feeling like we need to receive some type of credit or some type of praise?
00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:07.840
Those questions reveal a lot about what motivates us.
00:12:09.120 --> 00:12:17.679
John then reminds his disciples that he reminds them of something that he had already told them.
00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:20.240
He's not the Messiah.
00:12:20.639 --> 00:12:22.879
He had been sent ahead of him.
00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:28.720
He wasn't competing with Jesus because Jesus was never his competition in the first place.
00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:37.840
John understood that his purpose was to prepare people for Jesus, not to build a following that would be his forever.
00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:43.600
In verse 29, he uses a picture of a wedding.
00:12:44.159 --> 00:12:50.159
He describes Jesus as the bridegroom and himself as the friend of the bridegroom.
00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:55.120
In a wedding, the bridegroom is the one who is getting married.
00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:58.320
The friend of the bridegroom has a different role.
00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:05.039
He can celebrate the wedding, support his friend, and share in the joy of the occasion.
00:13:05.279 --> 00:13:09.440
But the friend isn't supposed to take the place of the bridegroom.
00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:21.600
John says that the friend stands and listens for the groom's voice and he rejoices greatly because of it.
00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:25.600
That's John's attitude towards Jesus.
00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:29.440
He isn't disappointed that Jesus is receiving attention.
00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:33.039
He's glad because the groom has come.
00:13:34.480 --> 00:13:40.480
Think about how different that is from the way we sometimes respond to other people's success.
00:13:41.279 --> 00:13:52.480
We can find ourselves thinking that somebody else is somebody else is getting the opportunity and then somehow we've lost something.
00:14:05.759 --> 00:14:08.080
We can encourage somebody else's ministry.
00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:13.120
We can support what someone else is being called for.
00:14:14.399 --> 00:14:23.519
We can be happy that people are coming to know Jesus even if we're not the one standing in the front of the crowd.
00:14:24.799 --> 00:14:29.679
Because the goal was never supposed to be our recognition.
00:14:30.080 --> 00:14:33.759
The goal is that people come to know Jesus.
00:14:35.519 --> 00:14:41.039
And that brings us to the verse that gives us the episode of this title.
00:14:42.639 --> 00:14:47.120
John 3 and 30 says, He must become greater.
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:49.120
I must become less.
00:14:54.720 --> 00:14:59.840
John isn't just saying that Jesus deserves more attention than he does.
00:15:00.240 --> 00:15:05.840
He's recognizing that Jesus must take the place that belongs to him.
00:15:07.039 --> 00:15:08.799
Jesus is a Messiah.
00:15:09.279 --> 00:15:10.399
John isn't.
00:15:11.279 --> 00:15:14.480
Jesus is the one who came to save people.
00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:19.440
John was sent to prepare the way for him.
00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:28.480
Jesus is the center of the story, and John understands that his own role is to point people toward him.
00:15:29.279 --> 00:15:35.600
That's why John can accept the fact that Jesus is receiving more attention.
00:15:36.080 --> 00:15:42.080
He knows that his ministry is accomplishing what it was supposed to accomplish.
00:15:42.559 --> 00:15:52.320
Now when we hear the words, I must become less, we need to understand that John is actually what we need to understand what John is actually saying.
00:15:53.039 --> 00:15:56.080
He isn't saying that he has no value.
00:15:56.639 --> 00:15:59.759
He isn't saying that God doesn't care about him.
00:16:00.320 --> 00:16:08.799
And he isn't saying that we should hate ourselves or pretend that our abilities and our gifts that God has given us don't matter.
00:16:09.279 --> 00:16:14.480
Christian humility isn't about believing that we're worthless.
00:16:15.440 --> 00:16:26.879
It's about understanding that we're not God, that our lives belong to Him, and that our gifts are meant to be used for His purpose.
00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:35.919
There is a difference between having confidence in what God has given you and believing that everything needs to be about you.
00:16:36.559 --> 00:16:42.399
You can recognize your ability without making them your identity.
00:16:42.720 --> 00:16:47.840
You can work hard without needing anybody to praise you.
00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:52.559
You can lead without needing to control everything.
00:16:53.279 --> 00:17:01.279
And you can serve faithfully without becoming upset when somebody else gets the credit.
00:17:01.840 --> 00:17:09.519
The issue isn't whether we have value, the issue is whether we're willing to put Jesus first.
00:17:10.160 --> 00:17:12.559
And that raises an important question.
00:17:13.440 --> 00:17:18.400
What does it actually look like for Jesus to become greater in our lives?
00:17:18.720 --> 00:17:22.160
And I think it begins with the way we make decisions.
00:17:22.960 --> 00:17:31.759
When Jesus becomes greater in our lives, his teachings they start carrying more weight in our personal preferences.
00:17:32.319 --> 00:17:35.759
Instead of asking only, what do I want to do?
00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:41.599
We begin by asking, what would it look like to honor Jesus in this situation?
00:17:43.039 --> 00:17:53.279
Instead of letting our feelings make every decision, we bring those feelings before God and allow his truth to guide us.
00:17:54.240 --> 00:17:59.279
That doesn't mean we have to stop having our own thoughts or desires.
00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:04.400
It means we recognize that Jesus has the authority to challenge them.
00:18:04.880 --> 00:18:09.519
Sometimes following him means doing something we don't feel like doing.
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:14.079
Sometimes it means apologizing when we rather defend ourselves.
00:18:14.400 --> 00:18:19.119
Or forgiving somebody when holding on to the resentment feels easier.
00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:29.839
It means walking away from something we don't we want because we recognize that it's pulling us away from God.
00:18:31.519 --> 00:18:40.160
In those moments, Jesus becomes greater as we learn to trust Him more than we trust our own impulses.
00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:50.160
When everything revolves around us, we tend to view people according to what they can do for us.
00:18:50.400 --> 00:18:51.599
Transactional.
00:18:52.400 --> 00:18:58.559
We want them to notice us, appreciate us, agree with us, and make us feel important.
00:19:00.079 --> 00:19:11.279
But when we begin putting Jesus first, we start learning to love people without always asking what we're going to get in return.
00:19:13.119 --> 00:19:18.319
We become more willing to listen, encourage, serve, and forgive.
00:19:18.559 --> 00:19:27.680
We become less concerned with winning every argument or proving our point and you know just proving that we're right.
00:19:28.640 --> 00:19:35.039
And we we start to recognize that other people aren't obstacles standing between us and the life that we want.
00:19:35.680 --> 00:19:38.400
They are people God called us to love.
00:19:40.079 --> 00:19:46.000
And finally, it this affects the way that we handle recognition.
00:19:47.839 --> 00:19:52.240
This is where John's example really challenges me.
00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:07.200
It's another to believe when when something else is getting attention that we want it.
00:20:08.079 --> 00:20:13.680
It's easy to talk about serving God when people appreciate our efforts.
00:20:13.920 --> 00:20:17.359
But can we keep serving when no, when nobody notices?
00:20:18.559 --> 00:20:28.079
Can we encourage someone else when they're succeeding in an area where we want where we feel like we're falling behind?
00:20:28.720 --> 00:20:37.759
We can celebrate what God is doing through someone else without feeling the need to remind everyone what we've done.
00:20:38.559 --> 00:20:47.519
Those moments reveal whether we're serving Jesus because we love him or because we love what serving him does for our reputation.
00:20:48.079 --> 00:20:51.839
And I think we need to be honest with ourselves about that.
00:20:52.559 --> 00:20:58.799
Sometimes we can do the right thing, but for the wrong reason.
00:20:59.039 --> 00:21:04.880
We can volunteer because we want people to think that we're dependable.
00:21:05.359 --> 00:21:09.519
We can take on leadership because we enjoy having influence.
00:21:09.839 --> 00:21:17.200
We can even do ministry because we want people to recognize us as quote unquote spiritual.
00:21:18.079 --> 00:21:23.359
The activity might look good from the outside, but God cares about our hearts.
00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:31.039
John reminds us that Jesus must become greater and that we must become less.
00:21:31.759 --> 00:21:35.200
Our pride needs to become less important.
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:41.039
Our need for recognition needs to become less controlling.
00:21:41.519 --> 00:21:52.079
And our desire to have everything go our way needs to give way to a willingness to follow Jesus.
00:21:55.359 --> 00:21:56.480
Think about that.
00:21:58.160 --> 00:21:59.759
As we close today.
00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:01.359
Episodes.
00:22:02.000 --> 00:22:06.720
I want us to think about the example John the Baptist gives us.
00:22:06.960 --> 00:22:12.079
His disciples were worried that Jesus was receiving more attention.
00:22:12.640 --> 00:22:19.359
They saw people going to Jesus and they seemed to think that this was a problem.
00:22:19.839 --> 00:22:21.759
But John didn't see it that way.
00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:31.279
He understood his calling, he knew that he wasn't the Messiah and recognized that Jesus deserved the attention because Jesus was the one God had sent.
00:22:33.279 --> 00:22:36.880
John wasn't trying to build a name for himself.
00:22:37.680 --> 00:22:40.319
He was preparing people to meet Jesus.
00:22:40.799 --> 00:22:45.599
And when Jesus began receiving the attention, John rejoiced.
00:22:50.319 --> 00:22:56.799
That's the kind of attitude we should want to develop in our lives.
00:22:57.599 --> 00:23:01.519
We don't have to compete with everyone around us.
00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:06.559
We don't have to treat somebody else's success as our failure.
00:23:06.960 --> 00:23:15.279
We don't have to make every situation about proving our worth or getting the recognition that we think that we deserve.
00:23:15.839 --> 00:23:21.680
Instead, we can focus on being faithful to what God has placed in front of us.
00:23:22.319 --> 00:23:40.400
So, as we typically do uh after these episodes, I want to leave us with three questions to think about uh in the in-between time for the rest of our days as you're going to work or as you're just spending quiet time, just just reflect on these three questions.
00:23:41.359 --> 00:23:48.400
One, how do I respond when someone else gets the attention that I wanted?
00:23:49.680 --> 00:23:57.759
Two, what is one area of my life where I need to let Jesus have greater influence?
00:23:59.200 --> 00:24:08.079
And three, am I more concerned with people noticing me or with people seeing Jesus through me?
00:24:11.039 --> 00:24:14.319
Think about those this week and for the rest of the day.
00:24:16.720 --> 00:24:23.599
It's possible to spend a lot of time doing good things while still wanting all the attention to come back to us.
00:24:24.240 --> 00:24:26.799
But John shows us a different way to live.
00:24:27.759 --> 00:24:34.880
He understood that his life had a purpose, and that purpose was connected to something greater than himself.
00:24:35.759 --> 00:24:37.839
He didn't need to be the Messiah.
00:24:38.480 --> 00:24:44.640
He didn't need to be the most popular teacher, he didn't need to keep people focused on him.
00:24:45.359 --> 00:24:50.720
He needed to be faithful to his calling and point people toward Jesus.
00:24:51.920 --> 00:24:55.680
That's what I hope that we can learn to do as well.
00:24:56.480 --> 00:25:11.279
Whether you're serving in a church, working a regular job, going to school, raising a family, or simply just trying to figure out what the next season of your life looks like, you can live in a way that points people toward Jesus.
00:25:11.519 --> 00:25:15.759
You don't have to stand behind a pulpit to do that.
00:25:15.839 --> 00:25:18.640
You don't have to stand on a stage to do that.
00:25:19.119 --> 00:25:31.039
You can point people toward Jesus through the way you treat them, the way you handle difficult situations, and the way you respond when you're wrong.
00:25:33.359 --> 00:25:37.759
Thank you for joining me today on the Narrow Path podcast.
00:25:38.559 --> 00:25:42.559
And we will continue to read through John.
00:25:42.960 --> 00:25:55.599
Looking forward to the next episode, and I hope that we can just continue to reflect on this because Jesus must become greater, and we must become less.
