00:00:00
Speaker 1: This is the Almost Famous Podcast with iHeartRadio.
00:00:04
Speaker 2: Welcome back to Kind of Famous. It's Deanna and producer Heather here. And today we get to talk to Emily, who is officially reality TV veteran. We love her and we got obsessed with her on Let's Marry Harry.
00:00:19
Speaker 3: This is fun for me because I put her on a television show a handful of years ago. She was fantastic on that show, if memory serves right. She won the show. So we'll talk to her about that. And I've kept in touch with her over the years because of different opportunities. You know, this is what us casting people do. If you seem like you have fun on a show or, you know, you never know who they know or who they're related to, who might want to do with the experience.
00:00:48
Speaker 1: So we've touched base.
00:00:49
Speaker 3: But I was very surprised when I saw her post the picture that she was a cast member for this show. And if you remember, I didn't spoil it in the first two episodes that you watched because I didn't want you to know her story and why it was so surprising to me that she would be on a show like Let's Marry Harry. But I'm excited to reconnect with her and kind of hear about what her experience was like on this show because It's very different than the other show she was on.
00:01:19
Speaker 2: This is like your baby, Heather. This is like your baby.
00:01:22
Speaker 1: It's always fun for me. Hello.
00:01:25
Speaker 4: Hi.
00:01:25
Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. So good to see you. So good to see you, too.
00:01:28
Speaker 3: Emily, this is Deanna. And we're so excited to chat with you. Obviously, you and I go back a handful of years. So just to tell everybody, you were on the Real Love.
00:01:44
Speaker 1: Boat a few years ago.
00:01:46
Speaker 4: So.
00:01:47
Speaker 3: what was your experience like going on reality TV the first time and how did it differ from the second time, would you say?
00:01:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, going on the Real Love Boat the first time was my first experience with reality TV and I had a great experience. I think it was a lot different than my most recent experience. So the first one was more of like a challenge slash dating show. As you know, Heather, like It was fun. We got to travel. It was more lighthearted. It was just like, it was amazing, honestly, for a first time experience on TV. So I guess I was maybe a little bit naive going into this one because I was kind of expecting a similar maybe experience and it was quite like polar opposite. I think the dynamic shifts a lot when there's just like one lead versus... The first show I was on where it was like a mix of guys and girls where you could kind of really explore and find like your personality and who you're a good fit with. And there's a ton more tension, obviously, when there's 20 women competing for one guy.
00:02:58
Speaker 3: And living in a house together. On the other show, you got to go back to your own room and stuff at the end of the day.
00:03:04
Speaker 1: Exactly.
00:03:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, we were definitely not on camera 24-7 like we were on Let's Marry Harry. So that was definitely an adjustment because I felt like for my mental health, like being able to step away from the cameras for a little bit kind of helped keep my sanity. And in this one, it was definitely a lot more intense stuff.
00:03:27
Speaker 3: What was your knowledge of Harry Jousey before going on the show? Yeah.
00:03:33
Speaker 1: So honestly, I didn't know a ton about him. All I really knew were like the negative headlines.
00:03:40
Speaker 4: And it's a funny story because I almost didn't go on the show because of that. I was reached out to multiple times about it. I kept ignoring it.
00:03:48
Speaker 1: I was like, I don't want to be associated with With that, you know what I mean?
00:03:53
Speaker 4: And so I.
00:03:54
Speaker 1: Ended up opening my mouth to my mom and I said something.
00:03:57
Speaker 4: I was like, there's a bunch of casting producers reaching out to me about this Let's Marry Harry show.
00:04:01
Speaker 1: Like, do you have any idea like who Harry Jowsey is? She ended up knowing 10 times more about him than me, which was hilarious.
00:04:09
Speaker 3: Thanks, Mom.
00:04:10
Speaker 1: I said this in the show. I was like, if this wasn't for my mom, I would not be here right now. And now she apologizes for it.
00:04:16
Speaker 3: And she's like, sorry, I.
00:04:17
Speaker 4: Didn't mean to steer you in the wrong direction. But no, really, I think we both were kind of... fell into his trap of she's like, I watch these podcasts of him and he's really trying to, you know, turn his life around and really get serious.
00:04:33
Speaker 1: And learn from his mistakes.
00:04:35
Speaker 4: And O'Harey did a really good job of making, I think, the public and us women believe that or we wouldn't have.
00:04:41
Speaker 1: Signed up for it.
00:04:42
Speaker 4: And so after getting my mom's blessing and everything, I was like, okay, I guess I'll interview and everything. And then throughout the interviews, we talked a little bit about Harry and his reputation and everything like that.
00:04:55
Speaker 1: And I believe that people can change.
00:04:58
Speaker 4: And so ultimately, that's why I decided to sign.
00:05:01
Speaker 1: Up for it despite his controversial reputation.
00:05:04
Speaker 2: Had you told the other girls in the house that you had been on television before that you'd done reality TV?
00:05:10
Speaker 1: No, I don't think that really ever got brought up.
00:05:13
Speaker 3: Do you think that it gave you a little bit of a upper hand going into this kind of environment? I mean, you weren't the only one, by the way, who'd been on TV before. We know that your cast member, Lauren, had also been briefly on The Bachelor.
00:05:29
Speaker 1: Did, would you guys connect about that at all?
00:05:31
Speaker 3: Like between you two or did literally nobody in the house know anything about you guys in your background?
00:05:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess I never really brought it up. I never really felt there to be a reason to, and I didn't want people.
00:05:42
Speaker 4: To view that as like, oh, she's just trying to get on TV because that really isn't.
00:05:47
Speaker 1: What it is.
00:05:48
Speaker 3: Like I'm trying to find my person.
00:05:51
Speaker 1: No one held it against Harry.
00:05:53
Speaker 4: Had anyone ever asked, like, of course, I would be honest about that. I just never really thought it was appropriate to bring up or part of the story.
00:06:01
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:06:03
Speaker 3: Well, part of your story is about the fact that you have maintained your virginity as a personal choice. And so dating somebody who is kind of known for maybe not having the longest relationships in the public eye, Did you feel nervous about broaching that topic with Harry? Did you think about how he was going to receive that information? Did you think he would be receptive to that? Like, what kind of were your thoughts? And did you have a conversation, like a deep conversation with him about that? Because we didn't really see that happen on camera.
00:06:40
Speaker 4: No, actually, Harry and I never had a conversation about my virginity. It was never an opportunity that we really got. I think their way of kind of maybe raising eyebrows was through that one challenge I was a part of when they were asking about like sex positions. Obviously, I was kind of put on the spot about that. And I was just truthful and honest, like I am who I am and Harry.
00:07:02
Speaker 1: Is who he is.
00:07:03
Speaker 4: But I think The thing that I kept telling myself going into this is like, I'm so much more than a virgin and he's so much more than like a boy. And so I had hoped that with who he said he was changing into, that he was kind of putting those tendencies aside and that he would honor my virginity really, because ultimately I'm not only doing it for myself, I'm doing it for like my future.
00:07:30
Speaker 1: Husband as well.
00:07:31
Speaker 3: And so.
00:07:34
Speaker 1: I don't know if I was nervous about it.
00:07:36
Speaker 4: I was more so just curious about how he was going to take it.
00:07:40
Speaker 3: And of course, you are more than that. I think for me personally, as a viewer, knowing that aspect about you, I was a little upset that I didn't get to see more of your character development because I thought that that juxtaposition of you guys kind of being different could have been a cool way for you to connect and for him to also be looking at somebody or connecting with somebody in maybe a less physical way. So I was upset as a viewer that there were certain, and I said this by the time we were in episode four or five, I felt like I was learning really serious things about some girls, especially when the challenge of like writing things down on the tile and dropping them where I was like, why am I hearing this in episode four when I could have been hearing this in episode two, because I didn't really know who we were rooting for. I didn't know who was going to be the final two. When you saw who ended up being the final two being Danelle and Amber, were you surprised or those two girls that you thought were the front runners when you were during your time in the house?
00:08:48
Speaker 4: Honestly, I don't think I tried to get too invested in other people's relationships.
00:08:53
Speaker 1: I was kind of just trying to focus on my own.
00:08:56
Speaker 4: I will say that I think one of the hesitations I had going into it ended up being true, that Harry was a little bit more lustful than he was maybe really looking for true love.
00:09:09
Speaker 1: And I think no disrespect on the girls.
00:09:12
Speaker 4: I think all the women are amazing and to each their own. But I think it is a little telling that, you know, the the top two were the ones that he was intimate with pretty early on.
00:09:22
Speaker 1: And I think that says more about Harry than anything.
00:09:25
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:09:25
Speaker 2: Interesting.
00:09:26
Speaker 3: It is an interesting point. Now we know that Danelle in the scenes that we saw of them in the closet, they've both confirmed that they actually were not intimate in that scene. And they really, I don't think explored their intimacy until their overnight. That's kind of what, is been put out there, but we do know that he got with Abby and supposedly maybe somebody else that hasn't really come forward or owned up to that. We were surprised just now to find out that Harry actually was living in the house with you guys. I for sure thought that was a production trick and that he was like going back to a hotel at the end of the night no.
00:10:02
Speaker 4: He actually was and it's so funny like his upstairs was like the Taj Mahal compared to like what we were living in like we had these small little rooms with four girls living in it, one tiny bathroom, and we have all our luggage in.
00:10:16
Speaker 1: There on top of it. So yeah, he had a good setup compared to us.
00:10:21
Speaker 3: Wow. Let's talk about the reunion because there was a lot happening there. What would you say your biggest takeaways were from that day, either from being present and what you saw versus what you saw when it aired back? What would you say your biggest takeaway was from the reunion?
00:10:42
Speaker 4: I think that I was just really disappointed in Harry, to be honest. I feel like the way he.
00:10:46
Speaker 1: Handled it was just disappointing.
00:10:50
Speaker 4: I think, you know, 20 women put their life on the line and they tried to take him seriously.
00:10:54
Speaker 1: And it just didn't.
00:10:55
Speaker 4: Really feel like at that reunion, he felt super genuine or serious. And it kind of made me question if the whole thing was like a joke.
00:11:13
Speaker 2: You know, this feels like a running theme, Heather. Emily, we've gotten the opportunity to talk to several girls, and this feels like the running theme because as a viewer, we kind of were not shown any of that. Like, Harry looked to be on his best behavior for the most part. We got one little snippet where you see him turn and look at a girl and say, I don't even know who you are. Stop talking. But it feels like there was so much more that happened that we didn't get to see.
00:11:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting.
00:11:41
Speaker 4: That's reality TV, I guess. So much is cut and they can't put it all. But I would say from being there in person, it was just jaw dropping all around. I honestly, too, going into that, didn't realize all the things that had happened post show either.
00:11:56
Speaker 1: And so I think I.
00:11:59
Speaker 4: Was just like probably just as shocked as a viewer was, to be honest.
00:12:05
Speaker 1: It was just terrible, to be honest, to hear everything that went down.
00:12:10
Speaker 3: Well, throughout all of filming, we saw Harry being extremely emotional. He was really in the thick of his grief process, having emotional connections and conversations with girls, also being emotional on his own. We've heard a lot about that he was one way for the cameras and another. Would you say that that was also part of it? Do you think that had he shown an emotional side at the reunion... and let those walls down that it would have been a different experience. What did you think about that?
00:12:44
Speaker 1: You mean like if he would have shown more emotion at the reunion? Yeah.
00:12:49
Speaker 3: And did you think that the emotion he showed on the show was genuine?
00:12:54
Speaker 1: I wasn't there long enough to really say, to be honest.
00:12:56
Speaker 4: I mean, obviously I fell into the trap. I thought while I was there, he seemed serious about things. I didn't know a lot of the things that were happening behind the scenes. And I will say at the reunion, at the reunion, it felt like he was just kind of checked out of it all. Like he just was like ready to just wipe his hands clean and.
00:13:13
Speaker 1: Just be done with it.
00:13:14
Speaker 4: Where I think a lot of us women felt differently.
00:13:17
Speaker 1: Like we all kind of wanted a little bit of like closure and understanding and whatever. And he didn't really seem to care as much as the women did. And, you know, it was interesting, too.
00:13:28
Speaker 4: I know he made a lot of comments on social media about how, like, oh, if you're not a top five, I don't know who you are.
00:13:34
Speaker 1: You don't really matter.
00:13:35
Speaker 4: And for Harry, Harry had 20 women. For us women, we had one man. So for him, we may not have meant anything. But for us, he did.
00:13:46
Speaker 1: So I think he had a hard time maybe... comprehending that or was.
00:13:52
Speaker 4: Maybe a little selfish in that aspect where he was just worried about himself and maybe not other people's feelings.
00:13:58
Speaker 3: Or maybe he was checked out because he's already in another relationship.
00:14:02
Speaker 1: This is true, Heather. This is true.
00:14:06
Speaker 2: I love how Heather doesn't cut the stuff. Heather is not messing around. She is not beating around the bush. I'm like, well, maybe they were going through a difficult time. Heather's like, absolutely not.
00:14:14
Speaker 1: He had another girlfriend.
00:14:14
Speaker 2: He doesn't care.
00:14:15
Speaker 3: Imagine you've got a new girlfriend, however long that they've been together. The last thing you want to do is go home and justify why you were emotional or opening up to a girl that you're not dating when the girl you are dating is back at home.
00:14:30
Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
00:14:31
Speaker 3: I just think men tend to compartmentalize like that in a lot of ways. And so it doesn't mean it's right how he approached it. And I do think, you know, as viewers, we all... I'll speak for myself. I felt like I was missing a lot of that closure, a lot of those kinds of one-on-one conversations that you tend to get from a reunion. Not saying that Amber is not justified in having her time and getting out there and getting to speak her piece and her mind, but I would have loved to see more of you ladies get that same opportunity.
00:15:03
Speaker 1: Totally.
00:15:04
Speaker 3: Me too.
00:15:05
Speaker 2: Something that I'm so hung up on, and Heather and I have discussed this a thousand times, I was pretty shocked by Juliana deciding not to come. I don't know if you guys were close in the house or if you were also surprised by her not coming to the reunion. I guess I just really needed to see what happened.
00:15:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, to be honest, I was a little surprised as well.
00:15:27
Speaker 4: Like I said, I never really got caught up in any of the drama or the other things going on in the house.
00:15:32
Speaker 1: Obviously, I was there, so I saw a little bit of it.
00:15:36
Speaker 4: Um, but to each their own, like if she needed to find peace by not going, I can respect that. I think I personally, if I was in her shoes, would have wanted to be there to kind of defend myself because obviously there were a lot.
00:15:49
Speaker 1: Of people speaking of her.
00:15:51
Speaker 4: But again, I think all that drama kind of got blown out of proportion as like an outsider watching it all.
00:15:58
Speaker 3: So you never felt unsafe living in the house with her?
00:16:01
Speaker 1: No, I never felt unsafe. I didn't know what that was all about. I was like, I don't know if.
00:16:05
Speaker 4: I was just living under a rock in the house or if that was after I left or what.
00:16:09
Speaker 1: But there was a lot at that reunion where I was just like, wait, that happened?
00:16:15
Speaker 2: I think I feel a way that she didn't come because now she's taking to social media and she is doing press and podcasts. I think that's why I feel a way about it. Why not come, face Harry, sit with the other women, you know what I mean, and have a place? Instead of avoiding it and then doing press and putting things out on social media afterwards. And I think just as a viewer, that's just, I don't know. I feel a weight about it.
00:16:40
Speaker 3: I'd love to know from Emily because another thing that Juliana has done is been extremely public about this relationship that she's in post-show. I want to say that she launched the guy as soon as.
00:16:53
Speaker 1: The episodes were out.
00:16:54
Speaker 3: There was no hiding that she was already with somebody.
00:16:59
Speaker 1: I've just been.
00:17:00
Speaker 3: in this for a really long time and I hear this on probably every dating show that I've done where somebody either is on there for not the right reasons or somebody has a boyfriend back at home or a girlfriend, whatever it may be. Not saying Juliana specifically, but to your knowledge, the people that you met and were close to in the house, was everybody there for the right reason? Did anybody have or admit to having something on the side? Or was that ever talked about amongst you girls after filming?
00:17:33
Speaker 1: I was never part of that conversation.
00:17:37
Speaker 4: If there was, I would be so interested for you to tell me because I guess I just was maybe naive, but hoped that everyone was there for the same reasons as me. I mean, I have a hard time dating in real life. Not that am I crazy to think reality TV would be any better?
00:17:55
Speaker 1: I don't know. But I don't know.
00:17:57
Speaker 4: I think finding love is all about putting yourself out of your comfort zone. And I guess going back to your question, was I aware of anyone who had.
00:18:07
Speaker 1: Relations going into the show?
00:18:09
Speaker 4: No.
00:18:10
Speaker 1: If they did, that would be disappointing as well.
00:18:12
Speaker 4: Because I think for people like myself who went into it with really, like, went into it really seriously, it would be a little bit disrespectful to the other girls who were serious about it.
00:18:23
Speaker 1: Like me.
00:18:24
Speaker 3: Totally. And to be clear, I don't know when Juliana started dating this guy, she could have met him the second she landed back wherever she lives. You know, I, I do know that my saying all the time to Deanna is hot.
00:18:37
Speaker 1: People don't stay single for long.
00:18:39
Speaker 3: You guys always tend to meet people very quickly. So more power to her. And I hope that this relationship is fulfilling for her. But I agree with Deanna that I would have loved to see her show up at the reunion and speak her truth. And, you know, when somebody's talking about you slamming doors and feeling unsafe, I would have loved to hear your own personal reaction to that. Yeah.
00:19:01
Speaker 4: I didn't find out until I was there that she wasn't going to be there. And I was just shocked nonetheless.
00:19:08
Speaker 2: I am more so like, come on, Harry and his little personal interviews when he was like, I don't love this girl.
00:19:12
Speaker 1: This is crazy.
00:19:13
Speaker 2: But then the way he's confessing his love to her face.
00:19:15
Speaker 1: I need more. I need more.
00:19:17
Speaker 3: I would have loved to hear them both address that situation because she seemed to say she was in love with him. And then I saw on a podcast that she said she was not. Two times reality TV under your belt. Is this the last time or are we going to see you possibly on TV again, say if perfect match on Netflix? comes knocking on your door?
00:19:51
Speaker 1: Oh gosh, I don't even know enough about that show to answer that. But I would say obviously I.
00:19:57
Speaker 4: Had one really good experience on reality TV and.
00:20:01
Speaker 1: Then the other one, not so much.
00:20:02
Speaker 4: So I think it would just all depend on the opportunity and what would feel like a right fit.
00:20:08
Speaker 1: I joke that I feel like me getting casted for Let's Marry Harry, I was casted for the wrong show. I don't know how I got casted for that.
00:20:15
Speaker 3: Girl, color me surprised the day that I saw the announcement.
00:20:19
Speaker 1: I was like, what?
00:20:21
Speaker 3: Knowing you, knowing I did not seem like the show that you would want to go on.
00:20:27
Speaker 1: And I just, I think I was so bamboozled. Like I think in the interview.
00:20:30
Speaker 4: Process, they made me just believe that we were going to be like this perfect fit and that he was really changing. And then it was like on paper, we seemed like we were, you know, everything was kind of lining up.
00:20:41
Speaker 1: And so I was like, oh, okay.
00:20:43
Speaker 4: What I once was ignoring, I thought was this totally not my fit.
00:20:47
Speaker 1: I was like then convinced it was.
00:20:49
Speaker 4: And then when I got there, I was just like, really piecing it together. I was like, okay, maybe this is it. And now, especially watching it back, I was like, what was that?
00:21:00
Speaker 1: I don't know.
00:21:01
Speaker 4: But that opportunity came to me for a reason.
00:21:03
Speaker 1: You met great girls, right?
00:21:05
Speaker 4: Yeah. And like, I think you just have to put yourself out of your comfort zone. And that's what this was for me. I think I gained a lot of confidence from it. I think I heard a really positive response from viewers on my virginity. I think being able to speak on that makes some people not feel so alone.
00:21:22
Speaker 2: Totally. So what I hear is that third time's a charm.
00:21:26
Speaker 3: That's what I was about to say, Heather.
00:21:27
Speaker 2: Yes, I am so here for it.
00:21:29
Speaker 3: And that's the thing is like this all just could have been a stepping stone for perfect match because you'll look into perfect match after this conversation. But it's basically all the people who didn't find love connections on other Netflix shows, whether that's Love is Blind, The Ultimatum, whatever. And it's a challenge more kind of you know, bachelor in paradise, kind of very similar to the real love boat in the sense that people are coming in at different times and stuff like that and challenges.
00:21:59
Speaker 1: It's a mixture of men and women.
00:22:01
Speaker 3: So there's definitely more of a chance at finding it.
00:22:03
Speaker 2: We're manifesting it right. Heather manifesting it for Emily.
00:22:07
Speaker 1: So sweet.
00:22:08
Speaker 4: I think Heather knows me well. So if you're saying it's a good fit, I may have to trust you.
00:22:12
Speaker 3: I was going to tell you that I don't think it's this current season, but the last season, and we recapped it, couple met, fell in love, had a baby together all before, like, and got married all before the season came out.
00:22:26
Speaker 1: It can happen. It can happen. Yeah, that's so sweet. Yeah, I'm a hopeless romantic, and I... I want to find love. It's just a matter of finding where it's at.
00:22:35
Speaker 2: So yeah.
00:22:35
Speaker 3: We'll end on this. What's going on in your love life now post-show? Are you dating? Is there anybody in your life right now?
00:22:43
Speaker 1: Nobody's in my life right now.
00:22:45
Speaker 4: No, I think I'm open to that. I've, you know, dated a bit post-show, nothing that's stuck, but I know my person's out there. So I'm staying hopeful.
00:22:54
Speaker 2: You should.
00:22:55
Speaker 4: You're the best.
00:22:55
Speaker 2: Emily, you're so beautiful inside and out.
00:22:58
Speaker 1: You're so sweet.
00:22:59
Speaker 2: What a bright and shiny woman that you are. Thanks for joining us today.
00:23:04
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, of course. Thank you guys so much for having me. I really appreciate it.
00:23:08
Speaker 3: So good to connect and see you again, Emily. Wishing you all the best and keep in touch with us if necessary.
00:23:15
Speaker 1: Netflix comes knocking
00:23:16
Speaker 4: Again sounds good so nice to talk to you thank you bye

Speaker 3: I was going to tell you that I don't think it's this current season, but the last season, and we recapped it, couple met, fell in love, had a baby together all before, like, and got married all before the season came out.

Speaker 1: It can happen. It can happen. Yeah, that's so sweet. Yeah, I'm a hopeless romantic, and I... I want to find love. It's just a matter of finding where it's at.

Speaker 2: So yeah.

Speaker 3: We'll end on this. What's going on in your love life now post-show? Are you dating? Is there anybody in your life right now?

Speaker 1: Nobody's in my life right now.
00:22:45
Speaker 4: No, I think I'm open to that. I've, you know, dated a bit post-show, nothing that's stuck, but I know my person's out there. So I'm staying hopeful.
00:22:54
Speaker 2: You should.
00:22:55
Speaker 4: You're the best.
