Speaker 1: Hey there, folks. It is Sunday, October 25th, and our number one favorite movie for this Halloween season in the thriller horror genre is one that will start very interesting conversations with your significant other. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ, our number one thriller horror. I can't remember, Rhodes, how we found this one. It is a doozy of a dilemma.
00:00:32
Speaker 2: Yes, that's a good way to put it.
00:00:33
Speaker 3: And I don't remember exactly how we stumbled upon it, but that's what we did.
00:00:37
Speaker 2: We stumbled upon it. This wasn't on our radar.
00:00:41
Speaker 3: And yes, like many of our recommendations this Halloween season, because we're looking for some of those unknown hidden gems that you would not know necessarily to click on to watch. But this one falls in that same category. It was released April 6th, 2020. That was smack dab in like the worst of the worst of COVID.
00:01:07
Speaker 1: The pandemic. Robes, I cannot believe, this makes perfect sense. We did not do this on purpose. So many that we have found are really, really quality horror movies. And we think, how did we miss them? This is why we missed them. They were supposed to be in theaters, some of these. And they ended up streaming because of COVID. Look. Rose, we might need to go specifically look for movies that were released in late 2020.
00:01:34
Speaker 3: Because we have found so many that are fantastic that were just not known to us. So yes, this was and was released straight to streaming because of the release date. And the name of this fine film is The Room. Look, it's funny because when I hear that, I think about that Oscar-nominated movie. movie that had nothing to do with a horror movie, but what was that? It was like, I thought it was called the room, but it was, so when I think I've even passed this one over thinking it was that movie, this is a very specific movie. Again, release date, April 6th, 2020. The Room, but I was confusing it, so I kept not clicking.
00:02:15
Speaker 2: On it, so I just wanted to warn everybody.
00:02:18
Speaker 3: This is not the same thing as the Academy Award winning, Alison Brie, I believe, was in that one. Are you looking up what the name of that fine film was?
00:02:26
Speaker 1: Brie Larson is who you're talking about.
00:02:28
Speaker 2: Brie Larson, I always get those two confused.
00:02:30
Speaker 1: It was.
00:02:31
Speaker 2: It was just called Room.
00:02:32
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:02:32
Speaker 3: Okay.
00:02:33
Speaker 2: There you go.
00:02:33
Speaker 1: She won for this movie.
00:02:36
Speaker 3: Brie Larson won the Academy Award for Room. So every time I saw The Room, I was thinking it was that movie. So I don't know what stood out to me one night where I was like, wait, I think this is a different movie. And thank God I did because this movie is wild.
00:02:54
Speaker 1: I'll be damned. This one, I know the movie now. I don't remember ever seeing it. but the one from 2015 that did. It was an Oscar darling at the time. Yes, and Brie Larson became a superstar. She won, I don't know if it won Best Picture or not, but it might, it's possible it did, but about a woman who was trapped in an attic or something with her child.
00:03:18
Speaker 3: Yep, it was dark.
00:03:19
Speaker 2: I watched it.
00:03:20
Speaker 3: Yes, and it's a very, very, very different film than this one.
00:03:25
Speaker 2: So that might be confusing, so I just wanted to point that out.
00:03:28
Speaker 1: This is The Room. Very, very different movie. And Robe, this is a movie that I love the ones that offer up these moral dilemmas where you wonder what would you do. And this one offers up a doozy. Now, how much do they give away in the synopsis of this one before I speak too much?
00:03:44
Speaker 2: Okay, here is the synopsis.
00:03:46
Speaker 3: A couple discover a strange room in their new house that grants material wishes, but all they want is a child.
00:03:57
Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good write-up for what happens in this movie. Jeez, Louise, you all.
00:04:05
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:04:05
Speaker 1: Okay, I don't want to give any more away than that. That is brilliant.
00:04:09
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:04:10
Speaker 1: That is brilliant.
00:04:10
Speaker 3: So it's funny because this story begins where you know there's grief, there's some sort of loss, this couple is moving. You think to renovate this house to maybe like rebuild their lives together.
00:04:22
Speaker 2: And you're thinking, is this a haunted house? Is this, and it, It has.
00:04:27
Speaker 3: Elements of a lot of different genres in it, but it's not what you're expecting.
00:04:31
Speaker 2: And that's what's so cool.
00:04:33
Speaker 3: And it's hard to actually talk about how much we love this movie without giving away too much of what the plot is and why that makes this movie so special.
00:04:44
Speaker 1: We can't go past what they gave away. That is brilliant. That is brilliantly written, that synopsis. But Robes, it's this dilemma of what would you do if you had a room in your house... That you walk in there and all you have to do is make the wish. And it gives you a physical thing. Right. The synopsis says that. So I'm not giving anything away there.
00:05:04
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:05:05
Speaker 1: What would you do? And then they already give away the mystery there. And all they want... Is a child. Oh, my goodness.
00:05:12
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:05:12
Speaker 2: And the cast.
00:05:13
Speaker 3: The cast obviously plays a huge role in the success and brilliance of this film because it really is just two people for the most part set in this house. Oh, yeah.
00:05:25
Speaker 2: And notably in a room.
00:05:27
Speaker 3: So Olga.
00:05:38
Speaker 2: Kurilenko. Did I say her name right?
00:05:40
Speaker 1: I'm not sure how to pronounce that.
00:05:42
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:05:42
Speaker 1: But I know when I see her, I'm a fan.
00:05:44
Speaker 2: She is Kate.
00:05:46
Speaker 3: She is the main female. But the big thing is she is a former Bond girl. So immediately you were like, oh, my God.
00:05:53
Speaker 2: It's Olga.
00:05:54
Speaker 1: So as I see her, yes, she was in his second one. It was Quantum of Solace. I think it was the one that he is probably the maybe the. One at the bottom of the list in terms of the best Bond movies. I like them all of Daniel Craig's, but she played a Bolivian agent that helped him along the way, and she was seeking revenge. Yeah, she starred. She co-starred. She was a big time contributor to that movie.
00:06:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, and she is really good in this film. I thought her acting was amazing, impeccable.
00:06:25
Speaker 3: And her co-star, his name is Kevin Janssens. I was not familiar with him. Didn't recognize him at all, but he is perfect. He is a phenomenal actor. The acting, obviously, to carry a film like this, when it's just two people, obviously has to be stellar.
00:06:44
Speaker 2: They deliver in every way. Like, you are right there with them. You believe you are experiencing this with them. And yes, it spawns a lot of conversations.
00:06:56
Speaker 1: There's some parts of it that get really fun. And man, then it gets dark. And it gets... They are great, but I'm... And you hadn't told me ahead of time, I'm dying to hear what the ratings or what the critics and the audience said about that.
00:07:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, you might be surprised.
00:07:14
Speaker 3: So the director, by the way, wasn't familiar, didn't see a lot of other things he's done. Christian Volkmann. But he is the director behind the film. And the runtime, by the way, an hour 40.
00:07:24
Speaker 2: Perfect. Pretty good. Hits that sweet spot oh so well. Rotten Tomatoes.
00:07:30
Speaker 1: Okay.
00:07:31
Speaker 2: And this, it still had a positive. 69%. by the critics. Are you surprised by that?
00:07:39
Speaker 1: That's pretty decent for this movie, I think. Yeah, I'm okay with that.
00:07:46
Speaker 3: I thought it would have been a little bit higher, I'll be honest, but I still think 69% obviously is solid.
00:07:52
Speaker 1: But I would say that the critics would like it better than the audience.
00:07:56
Speaker 3: Yes, okay.
00:07:56
Speaker 1: So that's the part that surprises me that's that low.
00:07:59
Speaker 3: I'm holding the audience score for now, but the critics is 69%. The critics' consensus is the room features a unique premise that evolves into an unsettling trap that's hard to escape from.
00:08:14
Speaker 2: What do you think of that? Is that fair?
00:08:16
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:08:17
Speaker 2: I think so, too.
00:08:20
Speaker 3: I thought they might give it a little bit more love than they received, but that's just me. I was expecting, I think, maybe just the critics to like it a little bit more than they did. I thought it had all the elements. The acting was completely amazing.
00:08:39
Speaker 2: Wouldn't you agree? So I don't know. I think that's usually... what they look for. Here's one of the reviews.
00:08:43
Speaker 3: The room is not a gore fest, nor is it an atmospheric spooktacular. It is an unnerving tale of the rules of our world breaking, and it does not hesitate to show the dark consequences.
00:08:57
Speaker 2: I think that was a really fair, without giving it away, review.
00:09:02
Speaker 1: I think that's fair. It is. It's hard to describe because it's not a haunted house type of a movie.
00:09:08
Speaker 3: No.
00:09:09
Speaker 1: At all it's a it's certainly a what if it's certainly psychological but it is a I don't know it is twisted to a certain degree when you see two people kind of lose their way then try to find their way back it is there's pain and hurt and loss all involved in this right and it I don't think there's a villain I actually don't think there's a villain I think that's actually really interesting.
00:09:40
Speaker 2: You're right. You are rooting for both of them.
00:09:42
Speaker 3: And you, yes, immediately, I don't think anyone can help but watch this movie and immediately put yourself in their position. And what would you ask for if you could ask for anything? And what are the rules? What are the consequences to getting something for nothing? And how far would you go? What would you give up in order to maintain something? I thought this was such a, yes, a compelling, a thought compelling movie that you don't often get in a horror film, but you really You can't help but ask each other.
00:10:18
Speaker 2: Well, what would you do?
00:10:19
Speaker 1: What would we do?
00:10:20
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
00:10:21
Speaker 1: This is going to spark conversation.
00:10:23
Speaker 3: I loved this movie. I thought it was so cool in all of those ways. So that was what the critics said. And yes, they liked it. When we come back, we will tell you what the audience review was, where you can watch it, and why we believe, yes, this is our number one guaranteed Halloween thriller horror movie. Welcome back, everyone, to Amy and TJ. We are talking about our number one thriller horror recommendation for the day. It's called The Room. Not to be confused with another movie that I think a lot of people know from the Academy Awards called Room. This is a horror movie, and it is from 2020, and it is a hidden gem. I think there's no other way to describe it but that. Okay.
00:11:17
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:11:18
Speaker 2: I mean, you were surprised.
00:11:20
Speaker 3: Have you seen a movie that even is close to, I think, coming up with a premise like this?
00:11:25
Speaker 1: Well, this is just creative. And again, movies are brilliant when they take something that's mundane, something that's familiar to us all, and turn it into something terrifying. The ocean, right? A mirror, that kind of stuff. This is the simplicity of a room. A room. A room. And the twist is that it can give you anything you want in the world. Then why has my life descended into this roller coaster of horror? So, yeah, I applaud them for coming up with something like that. This will spark conversation. It will. Oh, my God. All right.
00:12:04
Speaker 3: So the critics gave it a 69%, we told you before the break. The audience gave it a 53%, which is still good.
00:12:10
Speaker 2: Above average. That is still good.
00:12:12
Speaker 1: That's not good.
00:12:13
Speaker 2: But it's not as good as I would have expected.
00:12:16
Speaker 3: So I found a couple of audience reviews to try and get my head around why they didn't like it as much as we did. So Kevin Quinlan T.
00:12:26
Speaker 2: Said this. Well, he took issue with the score. If anyone thought this movie wasn't good, they have no taste. Really, really original story. Well acted.
00:12:36
Speaker 3: Olga was great and why I checked it out. It started strange, and you kind of wondered where it was going, and then a whole bunch of zingers come flying at.
00:12:44
Speaker 2: You until the end.
00:12:45
Speaker 3: An easy addition for any collection, and one of the best movies I have watched recently that I knew nothing of. Most are disappointing. I thought that was really an honest assessment.
00:12:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, but what issue are people taking with it? If only 53%, is there any kind of consensus or anything you can see that people are agreeing on that they took most issue with?
00:13:08
Speaker 3: No, I really, so some of, a lot of people did check it out because they liked Olga and they wanted to see it for Olga. So some of the reviews, I actually thought most people were giving it, they weren't like dogging it, they just gave it low stars and I don't know why.
00:13:25
Speaker 2: Like this movie isn't bad overall.
00:13:27
Speaker 3: The idea of this magical room inside your house fills those watching around you with questions and desires on what they would do, blah, blah, blah.
00:13:36
Speaker 2: The reason I.
00:13:36
Speaker 3: Have rated it two stars is is because it was very hard to watch two individuals make such poor decisions.
00:13:43
Speaker 2: So that was what I basically saw.
00:13:45
Speaker 3: People were saying it's too unrealistic that these two would have continued down this path without seeking advice or really considering what they were doing or asking for.
00:13:58
Speaker 1: So the premise that there is a room that physically grants wishes, that part... They buy.
00:14:09
Speaker 3: Right.
00:14:10
Speaker 1: But the two individuals making bad decisions. Oh, that is too unrealistic. Robes, what are we talking about? It's a movie about a room that will, if you say, I want a new bed, one will show up in there. It's that. And so they took issue with bad decisions. The bad decisions are what make the movie interesting. Exactly. You'll want to pause this movie when it's decision time for them. and look at your partner and go, okay, well, what would you do?
00:14:38
Speaker 3: Right? Exactly. So it's funny, as I go down all of the audience reviews, which of course are not as good as the critics, every single one starts out with a pretty cool concept, but an excellent idea, executed pretty well, with some crazy plot twists thrown in for good measure. But you need to accept too many bad explained premises to believe it is realistic. I'm sorry, I take exception with that premise. Why do you need it to be realistic?
00:15:09
Speaker 2: It's a movie. It's a horror movie.
00:15:12
Speaker 3: Sometimes when we, all of us, have done it, shout out at the main character for doing something stupid, which ultimately leads to him or her getting killed, we all start screaming, and then someone in the.
00:15:23
Speaker 2: Group says, it's a movie.
00:15:26
Speaker 3: And then you laugh at yourself for having... unrealistic expectations. That is what I see people complaining about in this film, which I find to be funny.
00:15:36
Speaker 1: Aren't those some of the best horror movies? When collectively, in a movie theater, you're screaming, don't go in there! Or whatever it may be. It's a part of it. You remember that funny, it might have been an insurance commercial. where they talk about people make bad decisions.
00:15:52
Speaker 2: Yes. Like a horror movie.
00:15:54
Speaker 1: A monster is after, or the bad guy's after them. And the girl yells, why don't we just go to the running car?
00:16:00
Speaker 2: No, are you crazy? No, let's go to the secluded barn.
00:16:04
Speaker 1: Yes. Okay. It's that thing. Babe, you need this in a movie. You need that moment where people have a decision to make and they make a bad one.
00:16:12
Speaker 3: Exactly.
00:16:12
Speaker 1: Even if it's obviously bad. Now, I'm getting more upset because you should rate this even higher when it makes you get engaged in that way.
00:16:22
Speaker 2: I love ropes.
00:16:24
Speaker 1: We asked ourselves a lot of questions after watching this movie.
00:16:27
Speaker 2: That's true. This was very thought provoking.
00:16:30
Speaker 3: And so that's why I wanted to, yes, read some of the bad reviews because I do think where they're coming at it from doesn't make a lot of sense.
00:16:38
Speaker 2: Craig B wrote.
00:16:39
Speaker 3: Excellent and intriguing movie, great performances from ex Bond girl, Olga and Kevin Jansen's underpin a dark brooding and compelling story. Which asks the age-old question, if you could have anything and everything, what would you wish for?
00:16:57
Speaker 2: However, there's always a catch.
00:16:59
Speaker 1: Yes. Man, I want people to watch this movie. It's so good. I would love to have a discussion about it.
00:17:06
Speaker 3: Yes.
00:17:07
Speaker 1: What would you do?
00:17:09
Speaker 2: What would you wish for? And would it be enough?
00:17:12
Speaker 3: All right, you can watch this on AMC +. And I think we've described already why we think this is an absolute guaranteed Halloween horror hit.
00:17:22
Speaker 2: And I think everybody would love this. You could watch it as a couple. You could watch it with like couples night, even a group.
00:17:29
Speaker 3: I think this is just a fun movie that everybody would get into. It's not like it gets... So dark that it like you can have a fun atmosphere around this.
00:17:41
Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes. There is no there's no violence. There's no gore or anything like that. No, this is a. This is a thriller, almost a psychological thriller to a degree. But this is a, this is a, and again, this is an entry-level horror movie, I would say.
00:17:58
Speaker 2: Would it not be?
00:17:59
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:17:59
Speaker 3: All right, so everybody, enjoy The Room. And with that, we always appreciate you listening to us. I'm Amy Robach, alongside TJ Holmes.
00:18:07
Speaker 2: We'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 1: Hey there, folks.
