Speaker 1: The Matty Roe Oz Music Show on Nova.
00:00:04
Speaker 2: Yo, what's up? I'm Jack Gray. On the Matty Roe Oz Music Show.
00:00:24
Speaker 1: My favourite boy is here. He looks beautiful. He looks windswept, surf-swept by maybe. Is he direct from the sunny coast? Is it Jack Grey, everybody? Hey.
00:00:35
Speaker 2: It sure is. It sure is.
00:00:38
Speaker 1: You've been spending a little bit of time by the beach, my friend.
00:00:40
Speaker 2: I have been. We've just been on the Great Ocean Drive from Adelaide to Melbourne the last few days.
00:00:45
Speaker 1: Gorgeous.
00:00:46
Speaker 2: And I have been nearly swept away. That's probably what the hair's doing. We've been on like cliff sides, just taking the most insane amount of wind to the hair and face. So that would make sense.
00:00:56
Speaker 1: You always look so gorgeous. And it's a special day. It's a special week for you. Your debut album, Swimming in Jeans, is out now. How is it all feeling? Like the build-up to it, there must be a lot of adrenaline, a lot of nerves. What's the vibe?
00:01:13
Speaker 2: It's all of the feelings, Maddie. You're right. Yeah, it's been a long time coming and it's pretty surreal to have that music. It's been in my vault for so long now. So to have it out there and to have people showing so much love and support for it is, you know, I'm so grateful for and it's really sweet.
00:01:31
Speaker 1: How do you celebrate a debut album? Like, do you have a drink? Do you have some wine? Do you have a whiskey? Like, what's your drink of choice, Jack?
00:01:38
Speaker 2: I normally would have a few drinks, but this schedule for the past week or so has been pretty full on. And I've been trying to conserve my voice.
00:01:45
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:01:46
Speaker 2: A cheesecake. A cheesecake is normally how we celebrate a release.
00:01:49
Speaker 1: Like a cookies and cream or just like a standard cheesecake?
00:01:53
Speaker 2: No, American baked cheesecake from the cheesecake shop. My mum always gets one and she gets the release written on there, so Swimming in Jeans. Oh, mum.
00:02:03
Speaker 1: Mama Grey. She's the best, Mama Grey.
00:02:06
Speaker 2: She's all over it, dude.
00:02:07
Speaker 1: This album is beautiful, Jack. I have to say, like self-produced as well. Like you produced 10 songs out of 12 on the album.
00:02:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you so much. You're so sweet.
00:02:16
Speaker 1: It was.
00:02:17
Speaker 2: I pulled my hair out a lot of this process trying to get these songs to the finish line. But I'm so, you know, proud that we got there in the end. And I do really love these songs, which I normally hate my music. So this is a step forward in the right direction.
00:02:29
Speaker 1: Do you listen to your own album before it's released? Do you listen to an album post release? Or like once it's in people's ears, that's it. Jack Gray is not listening to the album ever again.
00:02:37
Speaker 2: I'm checking out. I can't. Yeah, I obviously listen to it a lot while I'm making it because I want to, you know, keep tinkling with it and stuff. But once it's out, I definitely have to let go of it and just move on to the next thing.
00:02:51
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:02:51
Speaker 2: I think it's the most healthy thing for my brain.
00:02:53
Speaker 1: I don't know you super well, Jack, but I can imagine that you are a little bit of a perfectionist. Like most artists.
00:03:00
Speaker 2: We're besties, dude. You know me better than I know myself. And you are absolutely right.
00:03:04
Speaker 1: I know.
00:03:04
Speaker 2: I'm a perfectionist.
00:03:05
Speaker 1: Can I ask how many mixes of certain songs did you go through? Because I've heard like crazy stuff from artists where they have had 250 mixes and then they go back to the first one.
00:03:15
Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that's that's pretty much the story of my life. Well, definitely a lot of mixes, like an insane amount of mixes. But but even before the mixes, I've done completely different versions of most of these songs. Like one song will be it'll start as like a piano ballad and end up being this like anthem rock thing, then come back to like a halftime.
00:03:35
Speaker 1: You know, like music nerd stuff.
00:03:37
Speaker 2: Music note stuff, it'll take many forms. And then in the end, I'll like figure out which world it sits best in. And if it feels like this section was better over here, I'll kind of Frankenstein it together a little bit. But there's no formula, dude. It's just whatever feels good. And I have a really bad, you know, finishing problem with these songs. And so I need people in my life to tell me when to stop. Otherwise, I'll just keep going forever.
00:04:01
Speaker 1: So who told you to stop and said all of these songs, these 12 songs are amazing. You don't need to do any more to them.
00:04:07
Speaker 2: Yeah, my manager, Leonie, she's normally a pretty good one to just step in there and be like, you're being an idiot. You are not to touch this again. Or my A & R, Robert. Or, you know, my family or my partner. Everyone is like Jack. You're just driving yourself crazier, dude. Just chill.
00:04:22
Speaker 1: How long have you been working on this album for, Jack? And what do you learn about yourself through that process?
00:04:29
Speaker 2: Well, other than my crippling perfectionism and my finishing problem... I feel like I've learned a lot over the process, just as a producer and a songwriter. I feel like I've gotten better throughout this process of this album. But yeah, I think I really started pulling it together in the last two to three years. But there's a few songs on there that were from five years ago. So it's over the span of quite a long time. But they've all been freshened up in the past year. I went through every song and redressed them up and revocaled and stuff in the past year. So yeah, it's a culmination of a lot of years of work. Well, it's paid off.
00:05:06
Speaker 1: Hopefully the next album doesn't take you that long because you let go of the perfectionist in you.
00:05:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, because I'm a new person and I don't care about stuff being perfect. All I care about now is an authentic thing and I'm not even going to think twice about that.
00:05:26
Speaker 1: You're currently on tour across Australia, Jack, and you've been doing these activations, these pop-ups at Cotton On.
00:05:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, how cool is that?
00:05:35
Speaker 1: Oh my god, people can pick up a tote bag and a pair of socks and also see you live. That is pretty damn cool.
00:05:41
Speaker 2: That is called multitasking.
00:05:42
Speaker 1: Absolutely. How's it been performing all these songs live?
00:05:46
Speaker 2: Oh, it's so fun just to fully strip them back and play them acoustically and be in a cool little Cotton On store. I mean, that's That's so fun for me. Most of my wardrobe is cotton on, so it felt like a fitting pairing, you know.
00:06:01
Speaker 1: Last time we spoke, Jack, we were talking about the Hailey Bieber vomit moment.
00:06:05
Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. You love making me really.
00:06:08
Speaker 1: Bad, don't you? So, Jack, you vomited in front of Hailey Bieber, and if people want to listen to that chat, they can get our podcast. But we were also talking about your potential acting career.
00:06:18
Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
00:06:20
Speaker 1: Have there been any developments? Because I know that, you know, you were serving actor in your last music video.
00:06:25
Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
00:06:26
Speaker 1: Has the acting thing been another thought? Have you auditioned for anything since? I, yeah, no, I just booked the next Dune, Dune 4. Oh, yes.
00:06:39
Speaker 2: No, I'm just manifesting that. That's not true.
00:06:41
Speaker 1: You and Timothee Chalamet, though, that would make a good pairing. I reckon you two would connect well.
00:06:47
Speaker 2: Maybe like love interests. Oh, yes. Yeah, that would be.
00:06:51
Speaker 1: Sorry, Zendaya. Sorry.
00:06:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be more than just the spice on Arrakis. It would be pretty spicy. No, sorry. There has been no more thought into that. It's been full music land.
00:07:03
Speaker 1: Album mode, yes.
00:07:04
Speaker 2: Album mode. The only acting has been the. You know, the beautiful acting chops in the music videos.
00:07:10
Speaker 1: Oh, God. And you look amazing doing it, Jack. My God.
00:07:13
Speaker 2: You're very sweet. You're very sweet.
00:07:16
Speaker 1: You are so busy. So not only have you got a debut album out, you're touring the country. I think in a few days you head off to Germany.
00:07:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, let's go to Germany. You want to come?
00:07:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, I've never been to Germany. Actually, that is a lie. I have been to Belgium. Is Belgium in Germany? I'm not a geography person, but is Belgium in Germany? Yes.
00:07:35
Speaker 2: Dude, I mean, I'm the last person you'd want to ask about.
00:07:38
Speaker 1: I think it is. So I have been to Germany.
00:07:40
Speaker 2: It's giving Germany.
00:07:40
Speaker 1: It's giving Germany vibes.
00:07:43
Speaker 2: It's giving Germany.
00:07:44
Speaker 1: Have you been to Germany?
00:07:45
Speaker 2: I have a couple of times. I've been to Berlin and Hamburg.
00:07:48
Speaker 1: Berlin I've been to. Sorry.
00:07:50
Speaker 2: Okay, so you've been all.
00:07:51
Speaker 1: Over, dude. I've been, I've been.
00:07:52
Speaker 2: I've never been to Germany.
00:07:53
Speaker 1: I've had a schnitzel in Germany, actually.
00:07:56
Speaker 2: It's all coming back.
00:07:57
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:07:57
Speaker 2: Okay, it's all coming back to you. You just had to say Berlin.
00:08:00
Speaker 1: Berlin.
00:08:01
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, so I'm going to Hamburg, and we're playing Reeperbahn, and that's going to be so much fun. There's a few shows there, and then it's back to North America for a tour with a band called In Colour, who are incredible.
00:08:12
Speaker 1: Hell yeah. I love In Colour. I remember them back, yes, in, like, the early 10s. They were, like, putting out some bangers.
00:08:18
Speaker 2: Honestly, I'm a massive fan, and so this is exciting for me because just the songs are so cool. They're putting out a record right now, and every song just gets better and better, and I'm like... I was just a fan, and then I found out that I might be opening for them, and I freaked out a little bit and sent them a message, and I think that's what helped lock it in. But, yeah, I'm super pumped.
00:08:37
Speaker 1: Let's go. So Australia to Germany to North America. Do you travel business class, Jack?
00:08:43
Speaker 2: Do you have, like, the points sorted?
00:08:45
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:08:46
Speaker 2: I travel private, so.
00:08:48
Speaker 1: Oh, yes, on the PJ. Have you been in a PJ before, Jack?
00:08:51
Speaker 2: No, I haven't been in a PJ.
00:08:52
Speaker 1: What? No, because.
00:08:53
Speaker 2: And I don't travel business.
00:08:55
Speaker 1: No, okay. But you're a tall boy, so you're all cramped up in economy, middle seat.
00:09:01
Speaker 2: Middle seat, economy, and we.
00:09:02
Speaker 1: Screaming children next to the toilet.
00:09:04
Speaker 2: Yep, that's my favourite. Next to the bathroom, next to the... Yes, I like being gassed out every flight. It's my favourite car. Keeps me awake.
00:09:13
Speaker 1: No, I.
00:09:14
Speaker 2: I often just cross my fingers and toes for an exit row. Just a bit of extra leg room is nice.
00:09:19
Speaker 1: Extra room. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:09:20
Speaker 2: But you know what? You know what? I might be lucky enough to be traveling business potentially on this flight to Germany because it's been like a show every day for a while now and then going straight into shows in Germany.
00:09:32
Speaker 1: You got so many points.
00:09:34
Speaker 2: Yes, well, no, but I've used all my points, but my sister is a flight attendant for Virgin. Oh, shout out, Sister Grey. Yeah, shout out to Maddie. I might be able to get business on Emirates, I think, but if it's full, then I get knocked down to a premium, and if that's full, I get knocked down to economy. Knowing my luck, I'll be at the back of the plane with the parts. Yeah, so it's all good.
00:09:58
Speaker 1: Okay, I'm manifesting a business class. like for you because I've never done an international. And my producer Alicia is not here today, but she's going to hate that I keep bringing up the points thing. But I'm like points hacking. Like I want to fly international business for once in my life. Imagine how bougie it's going to be, Jack. You're going to get the best sleep of your life. Champagne.
00:10:16
Speaker 2: Glassware.
00:10:17
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:10:18
Speaker 2: Honestly, it makes a flight. It turns a flight into, like, you know, mild torture to actually something that you look forward to. You're up there. No distractions. You can just clock off, have a glass of champagne, have a little, like, fancy little meal, lay down, watch a movie in the dark, watch multiple movies. It's amazing.
00:10:36
Speaker 1: Jack Gray. How the other half live. My God.
00:10:39
Speaker 2: Must be nice, Maddie.
00:10:40
Speaker 1: Must be nice.
00:10:41
Speaker 2: Must be nice.
00:10:42
Speaker 1: One day, huh? Before you go, we are celebrating your debut album, Jack Gray, Swimming in Jeans. I would love to do a rapid fire question for you. questionnaire with you just to first thing that pops into your mind with jack gray wrap of fire here we.
00:10:55
Speaker 2: Go dangerous you ready i'm ready when you are.
00:10:59
Speaker 1: Weirdest places you've written a song uh toilet one thing you can't survive without on tour uh steamer worst steamer worst haircut you've ever had.
00:11:10
Speaker 2: Oh um it was it would be when i was little um You know what? Even my high school haircut was pretty bad. It's the short back and sides with the big thing that slicks over.
00:11:22
Speaker 1: Oh, the flick over fringe. Oh, my God.
00:11:24
Speaker 2: What were you doing? What were you doing?
00:11:26
Speaker 1: If you weren't a muso, what would you be doing instead? Homeless. If your new album was a cocktail, what would be in it?
00:11:35
Speaker 2: Whiskey, for sure. And some ginger ale. And then we're going to put some mangoes and a strawberry on top.
00:11:46
Speaker 1: Beautiful. That sounds like a good drink.
00:11:48
Speaker 2: Salt around the room. Yeah.
00:11:50
Speaker 1: Is there a tattoo that you regret?
00:11:52
Speaker 2: No, I don't really regret them. I actually forget they're there. But, you know what, if I had to pick one that I regret, it's probably I got this, like, mushroom because he's a fun guy. I like that one.
00:12:03
Speaker 1: And final question, Jack Grey, would you actually swim in jeans?
00:12:07
Speaker 2: I have and I would again. Okay.
00:12:08
Speaker 1: Swimming in Jeans. Debut album from Jack Gray. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful music. Get it in your ear holes. Jack Gray, everybody.

00:10:42

00:12:07
