00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.220
We've been in a series on the book of Philippians and our scripture for today is this. We're gonna look at Philippians 4, verses two through three.
00:00:09.220 --> 00:00:16.829
Now it says, "Now I appeal to you, Euodia and Syntyche." Those are some hard names, come on.
00:00:18.010 --> 00:00:26.050
"Please, because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreements." Everyone say settle your disagreements.
00:00:26.050 --> 00:00:27.390
Settle your disagreements.
00:00:27.390 --> 00:00:33.719
And I ask you, my true partners, to help these two women, for they worked hard with me in telling others the good news.
00:00:33.719 --> 00:00:40.340
They worked along with Clement and the rest of my coworkers whose names are written in the book of life.
00:00:40.340 --> 00:00:49.030
Our series declaration is I can't change yesterday, I can't control tomorrow, but I can choose joy today. Today.
00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:52.210
Okay, pray with me, LVC, and then we'll dive right into it.
00:00:52.679 --> 00:00:54.770
Jesus, we thank you so much for this day.
00:00:55.560 --> 00:00:58.880
We say yes to you, God. We say yes to what you're doing.
00:00:59.369 --> 00:01:01.380
We open our hearts to receive from you.
00:01:01.939 --> 00:01:04.739
Help us, Lord, settle our disagreements.
00:01:04.739 --> 00:01:07.230
In Jesus' name, amen, amen.
00:01:07.939 --> 00:01:10.349
Now I have a confession I have to make, okay?
00:01:10.349 --> 00:01:12.939
And I might be the only person in here.
00:01:12.939 --> 00:01:21.680
So don't judge me, don't look at me differently once I give this confession out. Don't be talking about me behind my back, talk to me in front of my face.
00:01:22.780 --> 00:01:25.069
No, have mercy on me, okay?
00:01:25.069 --> 00:01:28.719
Here's my confession, I'm feeling like Usher today.
00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:32.859
Here are my confessions.
00:01:34.540 --> 00:01:42.659
My confession today is this. I might be the only one.
00:01:44.700 --> 00:01:48.329
I have had relational conflict before.
00:01:49.950 --> 00:01:51.579
Am I the only one? I'm not?
00:01:52.140 --> 00:01:54.280
Oh yeah, okay, I'm in good company.
00:01:54.280 --> 00:01:57.620
Everyone has had relational conflict before, right?
00:01:58.019 --> 00:02:06.480
You know, and so I think it's safe to say that if you are a human, you will at some point experience relational troubles.
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:19.099
You will have relational conflicts with a boss, a coworker, a neighbor, your waitress at the Waffle House, a spouse, your kids, a friend, someone you love.
00:02:19.099 --> 00:02:29.849
There will be disagreements, misunderstandings, frustrations you won't always see eye to eye. And honestly, honestly, if we're being honest, the hardest conflict we go through, what?
00:02:29.849 --> 00:02:31.710
Is with the people that we love.
00:02:31.710 --> 00:02:32.960
The people that we love.
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:36.240
Those are the hardest conflicts to navigate and to figure out.
00:02:36.659 --> 00:02:45.900
Now one thing Erin and I ask our kids when they do something wrong, when they handle a relationship incorrectly, we ask them this right away.
00:02:45.900 --> 00:02:49.090
We say, "What can you do to make it right?
00:02:49.780 --> 00:03:26.509
What can you do to make it right?" We always do it sometimes they're so frustrated like why are you doing it but when we're parenting well we ask them this question what do you do what can you do to make it right because every parent knows that if you just tell your kid go say sorry what are they gonna do sorry they'll say it but they don't mean it you might feel better but nothing's really changed so we try to ask them this question what can you do to make it right how can you make this right now a Now, a few years ago, my daughter Kingsley, she was probably five or six at this time, she hurt another girl's feelings at church.
00:03:27.039 --> 00:03:33.479
They're in service. Now, long story short, Kingsley wasn't listening when the other girl asked her to stop and that really bothered her.
00:03:33.479 --> 00:03:52.340
So afterwards, I talked to Kingsley about what happened and she understood that she was wrong and I asked her the question,"What can you do to make it right?" And so she thought about it for a minute and she said, "Well, maybe I can write her a card and give her an airhead." I said, "That's good. I like that.
00:03:52.340 --> 00:04:02.069
I like that. The candy really makes it better." Okay, so then I say, "Okay, that's a good idea." I said, "Now, what if we don't wait till next Sunday to do that?
00:04:02.069 --> 00:04:06.280
What if we take it to her house today?" At that, she got nervous.
00:04:06.280 --> 00:04:07.639
She didn't like that idea.
00:04:07.639 --> 00:04:09.520
She was like, "What? I don't want to do that.
00:04:09.520 --> 00:04:23.529
I don't don't know if we can do that." And I told her, "I know it feels scary, but sometimes that's how you know you're doing the right thing. That's how you know you're doing the right thing." So she made the card, we got an airhead, we drove to our friend's house.
00:04:23.990 --> 00:04:29.850
I remember watching Kingsley walk up to the door, and I'm not gonna lie, I was so proud of her. I was so proud.
00:04:29.850 --> 00:04:41.519
She's walking with this little card she made and a piece of candy, you know, about to do the scary thing. She knocks on the door, the little girl comes out, and then Kingsley apologizes, and the little girl gives her what?
00:04:41.519 --> 00:04:50.149
A giant big hug. Gives her a big hug, and you can see the relief and the joy on Kingsley's face after she did that.
00:04:50.149 --> 00:04:56.040
And you want to know what happened after she gave her the card and the candy and she forgave her? They played together.
00:04:56.579 --> 00:05:04.600
It was awesome. They didn't go back on Facebook and post all these different things. They didn't give each other six months of silent treatment.
00:05:04.600 --> 00:05:08.540
They didn't add three mutual friends to the gossip chain.
00:05:08.540 --> 00:05:11.199
No, they forgave and played.
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:16.480
And imagine how much better our world will be if adults knew how to forgive like kids.
00:05:17.139 --> 00:05:20.240
And they did, and it was awesome, because here is the truth.
00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:22.230
Conflict is a part of life.
00:05:22.230 --> 00:05:26.259
You can't avoid it. You can't dodge it.
00:05:26.259 --> 00:05:51.600
It will happen. And so as we continue this series on joy called An Invitation to Joy, we are going to look at one of the most important aspects of having joy in our lives. and one of the most common thing that steals joy, that robs us of joy, that robs us of the joy that God has for us, which is conflict, which is relational conflict. Okay, so if you're thinking, Jacob, not me, buddy, not me.
00:05:51.600 --> 00:05:53.920
I never had any relational issues.
00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:59.319
I wanna say, on behalf of everyone who loves you, you are socially unaware.
00:06:01.560 --> 00:06:04.339
And you're hurting a lot of people's feelings, okay?
00:06:04.339 --> 00:06:07.240
So no, because we know conflict is just a part of life.
00:06:07.240 --> 00:06:15.980
It happens because God loves, and this is the funny part, God loves to work through people. God being God thought it was a great idea to work through people.
00:06:16.439 --> 00:06:17.519
And this is what He does.
00:06:17.519 --> 00:06:26.079
Like imagine Jesus walking up to you, and imagine Jesus saying to you, saying, "I'm gonna change the world through you." And you would be like, "Wow, cool, awesome.
00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:34.079
"Sounds good, Jesus, I wanna do that." And then He says, "And I'm gonna give you a team "to do it with." You'd be like, "I love it, yeah.
00:06:34.689 --> 00:06:41.560
"Teamwork is the dream work, sounds good." And then Jesus begins to describe the team He's gonna give you.
00:06:41.560 --> 00:06:46.389
He says, "Some people on your team,"they're very overly opinionated.
00:06:47.360 --> 00:06:49.259
"Some are kinda insecure.
00:06:49.689 --> 00:07:02.959
"Some have a lot of baggage, "and they bring that baggage with them everywhere they go. "Some are hard to understand,"and some are gonna hurt each other's feelings, eventually they're gonna have conflict.
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:17.139
And you'll probably say, "Jesus, are you sure this is the team you want that you want me to have? Are you sure this is the plan that you have?" And Jesus will say to you, "Yep, that's my dream team." Because that's the plan.
00:07:17.779 --> 00:07:20.740
Because that is the church.
00:07:22.060 --> 00:07:24.930
That is the church. That is the church.
00:07:24.930 --> 00:07:37.629
You You know, not perfect and polished people but broken people, messy people, former addicts, people with complicated families, people with trauma, people who have made terrible decisions.
00:07:38.060 --> 00:08:00.310
In the church you'll find people are still trying to figure out how to forgive their parents, people who are still learning how to control their anger, people who are still learning how to communicate effectively, people who are still becoming like Jesus. And somehow Jesus says, "I'm going to build my church with these kind of people." And that's incredible.
00:08:00.310 --> 00:08:07.879
And that is also why you shouldn't be surprised when there's conflict in the church. You shouldn't be surprised.
00:08:07.879 --> 00:08:09.319
You're like, "What? There's conflict?
00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:16.629
There's people that like what?" You know, the answer, here you go, the answer is it isn't a church with no conflict, that's impossible.
00:08:16.629 --> 00:08:21.060
The answer is a church that knows how to handle conflict well.
00:08:21.949 --> 00:08:42.240
See, because what makes the church so compelling, which makes our reach so compelling to our community, isn't that the church is perfect, but is that the church knows how to live differently, how to respond differently, to have a hope that is beyond what the world has hope in.
00:08:42.909 --> 00:08:48.090
And so the world doesn't need a church that pretends we're not messy.
00:08:48.090 --> 00:08:57.580
No, we don't need that. The world needs a church that shows what Jesus does with messy people and how Jesus loves messy people.
00:08:57.580 --> 00:09:06.659
So here is Paul sitting in a Roman prison facing the possibility of execution and somehow this relational conflict lands on his desk.
00:09:07.139 --> 00:09:10.019
This relational issue lands on his desk.
00:09:10.019 --> 00:09:16.190
The church in Philippi is having a problem, and it's important enough to bother Paul about it while he's in jail.
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:22.759
And then this tells us something that we should probably pay attention to it, right? So it also communicates this to us.
00:09:22.759 --> 00:09:24.210
Don't be surprised by the mess.
00:09:24.679 --> 00:09:30.690
Don't be surprised by the mess, because sometimes we have this strange expectation of church. You know, we know we're messy.
00:09:31.139 --> 00:09:32.669
We know our family is messy.
00:09:33.129 --> 00:09:35.210
We know our workplace can be messy.
00:09:35.210 --> 00:09:37.360
We know our friend group can be messy.
00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:42.419
But then we walk into church and we think somehow everyone in here should have it together.
00:09:43.070 --> 00:09:45.539
Now why? Have you met us?
00:09:45.539 --> 00:09:46.740
Have you met me?
00:09:48.429 --> 00:09:55.450
People are complicated. We all walk carrying different stories, different wounds and habits and ways of handling life.
00:09:55.450 --> 00:09:58.129
And then Jesus again does something incredible.
00:09:58.129 --> 00:10:03.960
He says I'm gonna put all these people together and I'm gonna make a difference with them. Brokenness and all.
00:10:04.379 --> 00:10:12.110
Because the church has never been a collection of people who have arrived in life, it's a community of people who are becoming like Jesus.
00:10:12.690 --> 00:10:15.740
And a community of people becoming like Jesus ain't always pretty.
00:10:16.690 --> 00:10:17.919
It's not always perfect.
00:10:18.360 --> 00:10:21.929
And so if you're looking for a perfect church, head out the door now.
00:10:23.450 --> 00:10:24.799
Because you ain't gonna find it here.
00:10:25.309 --> 00:10:26.769
I hate to break it to you, okay?
00:10:27.230 --> 00:10:29.330
Now notice Paul's words here though.
00:10:29.330 --> 00:10:34.129
He says, "I appeal to you, Euodia and Syntyche.
00:10:34.129 --> 00:10:35.330
I did it.
00:10:36.340 --> 00:10:41.740
Please, check this out. Please, you belong to the Lord.
00:10:42.629 --> 00:10:46.490
Because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreements.
00:10:46.490 --> 00:10:50.269
Settle the problems. Now scripture doesn't tell us what the disagreement is.
00:10:50.269 --> 00:10:54.470
We don't know if it was the kind of style of worship they were playing in Philippi.
00:10:54.470 --> 00:10:58.559
We don't know if they wanted communion every week or communion every other month.
00:10:59.039 --> 00:11:04.259
We don't know if they were complaining about the small group semester time being a year long or 10 weeks.
00:11:04.259 --> 00:11:07.100
You know, we don't, maybe it was a major disagreement.
00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:09.159
Maybe there were harsh words exchanged.
00:11:09.159 --> 00:11:10.799
Maybe there was a violation of trust.
00:11:11.820 --> 00:11:19.159
We do not know what the violation is, but what we do know is messy and it's a big enough deal for Paul to address it.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:22.710
letter that would be read in front of the whole church.
00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.080
Like, that's kind of like intense, you know?
00:11:27.080 --> 00:11:33.000
It's like, oh, they're sitting in the auditorium, sitting in the chairs that week like, "He ain't talking about us.
00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:37.710
That's another Euodia. That ain't me, you know.
00:11:37.710 --> 00:11:39.679
It's her over there." They still having conflict.
00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:40.919
Okay, here we go.
00:11:43.250 --> 00:11:46.360
But the first note is how Paul appeals to them.
00:11:46.360 --> 00:11:53.259
He says, "Because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreements." And I love this because he doesn't say,"Because it's just the right thing to do.
00:11:54.139 --> 00:12:23.700
Because you just should do it because no no because you belong to God because you are following Jesus Jesus followers settle disagreements Jesus followers handle conflict Jesus followers don't let things go underground because you are a citizen of a different Kingdom we settle disagreements differently they belong to Jesus they are gospel workers they are important and they are and they are in an argument. And that tells us something.
00:12:23.700 --> 00:12:27.009
Conflict doesn't mean you're outside of the kingdom.
00:12:27.009 --> 00:12:33.120
Sometimes conflict is evidence that you're learning how to live in the kingdom with other people.
00:12:34.110 --> 00:12:38.019
And these two women, they're not random troublemakers in the church.
00:12:38.440 --> 00:12:39.850
They're important people.
00:12:39.850 --> 00:12:54.500
He says this, he says, "Help these two women, for they have worked with me in telling others the good news." This signifies that they were not just like Paul's assistant in kids' church holding the babies or making the food for the church picnic.
00:12:54.500 --> 00:12:58.950
No, these two ladies were with Him in the trenches, spreading the gospel.
00:12:59.440 --> 00:13:03.889
You see in this writing how Paul elevates women in leadership.
00:13:04.820 --> 00:13:13.629
He elevates them enough to say these two women are so valuable to the church and to reaching the gospel, they gotta handle their stuff right now.
00:13:14.940 --> 00:13:18.409
We gotta handle this. We can't let this go underground.
00:13:18.409 --> 00:13:20.370
We gotta talk about this.
00:13:20.370 --> 00:13:22.899
And they see they loved and served Jesus.
00:13:22.899 --> 00:13:31.350
They helped advance the gospel and they were still in conflict, which means two people can genuinely love God and genuinely disagree.
00:13:32.419 --> 00:13:34.990
Two people can see something differently.
00:13:34.990 --> 00:13:38.059
Two faithful people can hurt each other.
00:13:38.059 --> 00:13:42.789
Conflict doesn't mean one person is evil and the other person is right.
00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:46.919
Conflict means for conflicts can mean sometimes we're just human.
00:13:48.250 --> 00:13:51.909
And we hurt people. But I want you to get this, don't miss this though.
00:13:51.909 --> 00:13:56.480
Messiness is not an excuse for unhealthy behavior.
00:13:57.860 --> 00:14:01.139
See, messiness is not an excuse for unhealthy behavior.
00:14:01.139 --> 00:14:07.009
Oh, I'm messy and I have some trauma in my life, so I'm just kinda gossiping because it makes me feel better about myself.
00:14:07.539 --> 00:14:10.289
No, no, no, no, no. No, no, we don't gossip.
00:14:11.019 --> 00:14:20.159
If you haven't talked to the person, and if you want me to define what gossip is, if you haven't directly talked to the person and you're talking to 800 people to get some prayer for it, you're gossiping.
00:14:21.850 --> 00:14:23.860
You're gossiping. That's what it is.
00:14:23.860 --> 00:14:25.419
That's what you didn't know.
00:14:25.419 --> 00:14:34.500
You know, we don't say, "Well, that's just my personality to blow up on people." No. That's who you were before Christ.
00:14:34.500 --> 00:14:40.190
But Paul says, "You belong to the Lord." So you settle things differently.
00:14:40.659 --> 00:14:46.539
You live differently. And so our wounds may explain our reactions.
00:14:46.539 --> 00:14:48.090
Let me say that one more time.
00:14:48.090 --> 00:14:58.740
The wounds that we have, the traumas that we have dealt with, the hurts in our life, they may explain our reactions, but the Lord doesn't want you to stay there.
00:14:58.740 --> 00:15:15.440
He wants to heal you in those places because the way you respond to things is the real you. The way you respond to life's challenges heartaches and pains and disappointments and people you want to do this to, explains more about you and less about them.
00:15:16.950 --> 00:15:27.529
And so, and so, and so sometimes, sometimes the very people who frustrate us are part of how God wants to form us to become more like Jesus.
00:15:29.019 --> 00:15:31.419
How do you learn how to have some patience?
00:15:31.909 --> 00:15:33.210
Have a a four-year-old.
00:15:36.299 --> 00:15:37.500
Pray for me.
00:15:39.389 --> 00:15:41.179
You want to learn how to have some patience for real?
00:15:41.179 --> 00:15:43.759
Deal with someone that nags on you.
00:15:45.019 --> 00:15:50.029
You know, so, so, so maturity, maybe maturity isn't never making a mess.
00:15:50.029 --> 00:15:53.370
Maybe maturity is learning what to do when the mess happens.
00:15:54.059 --> 00:15:57.460
And here's the good news, the mess doesn't have to steal your joy.
00:15:58.220 --> 00:15:59.539
It doesn't have to steal it.
00:15:59.539 --> 00:16:02.970
You don't need perfect relationships to have joyful relationships.
00:16:02.970 --> 00:16:04.500
You don't need relationships.
00:16:04.500 --> 00:16:11.129
What you do need is relationships where grace is present, forgiveness is practice, and Jesus is forming us.
00:16:11.750 --> 00:16:14.779
So we're not gonna be surprised by the mess, but the second thing is this.
00:16:14.779 --> 00:16:16.370
Don't let the mess become the mission.
00:16:17.769 --> 00:16:19.679
Don't let the mess become the mission.
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:22.740
Now Paul's view of conflict resolution is not his own.
00:16:22.740 --> 00:16:25.879
He didn't make it up. This is exactly what Jesus taught us to do.
00:16:26.299 --> 00:16:34.580
See, healthy churches don't avoid conflict, healthy churches learn how to navigate conflict. And this is what I want to say to your personal life though.
00:16:34.990 --> 00:16:36.950
I want you to say this, I want to say this to your personal life.
00:16:37.370 --> 00:16:39.190
Insert your relationship here.
00:16:39.190 --> 00:16:42.240
Healthy blank don't avoid conflict.
00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:45.899
Healthy blank learns how to navigate conflict.
00:16:45.899 --> 00:16:48.100
Healthy marriages don't avoid conflict.
00:16:48.549 --> 00:16:50.600
Healthy marriages learn how to navigate it.
00:16:50.600 --> 00:16:51.950
Healthy parenting blank.
00:16:51.950 --> 00:16:54.870
Healthy... Insert your relationship there.
00:16:56.070 --> 00:16:59.480
That's how you you don't avoid it, you gotta learn how to navigate it.
00:16:59.480 --> 00:17:05.400
Jesus says this. He says, "If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense.
00:17:05.400 --> 00:17:09.579
If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back.
00:17:09.579 --> 00:17:18.890
But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses.
00:17:18.890 --> 00:17:22.849
If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church.
00:17:22.849 --> 00:17:29.319
Then if he or she won't accept the church's decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupted tax collector.
00:17:29.880 --> 00:17:32.259
Jesus is so good. He's so good.
00:17:32.259 --> 00:17:33.970
Like, I love me some Jesus.
00:17:33.970 --> 00:17:42.380
I love Jesus because He sets this up beautiful and for a way for us to deal with this. So you see, Jesus comes against everything we naturally want to do here.
00:17:42.960 --> 00:17:46.640
He comes against everything our natural tendency wants to do.
00:17:46.640 --> 00:17:50.470
Here's what Jesus knows about you and Jesus knows about us.
00:17:50.470 --> 00:17:53.450
unresolved conflict is exhausting.
00:17:54.759 --> 00:18:01.400
It's exhausting to have it in our lives, to have it in our hearts, to have it in our minds. What do you do when you have unresolved conflict?
00:18:01.400 --> 00:18:04.200
You replay the conversations in your head.
00:18:04.200 --> 00:18:06.569
You think about what you should have said.
00:18:06.569 --> 00:18:10.099
You see their name on your phone and your stomach tightens.
00:18:10.099 --> 00:18:13.400
You walk into the room and immediately wonder if they're there.
00:18:13.400 --> 00:18:16.900
You talk to an imaginary version of them in your head.
00:18:17.779 --> 00:18:20.670
Well you say all the right things and you mic drop at the end of it.
00:18:22.359 --> 00:18:25.170
And none of that produces joy.
00:18:25.869 --> 00:18:27.069
But what does Jesus say?
00:18:27.589 --> 00:18:42.400
Jesus says, "Go right to the person." Jesus. See I'm telling you man, when you read the things that Jesus says, if you read the things that Jesus say and you're like, "Got it," I don't know if you're reading the right Bible.
00:18:43.630 --> 00:18:49.859
Because I read the things that Jesus says and I'm like, "Whew! You want me to do what?
00:18:51.299 --> 00:18:52.750
You want me to go right to the person?
00:18:53.569 --> 00:18:55.259
That offended me? That hurt me?
00:18:56.130 --> 00:19:03.900
Wait, wait, no Jesus, you mean go right to them after I tell three other people how they hurt me, right? No, no, no, right to them first?
00:19:04.410 --> 00:19:19.500
You know, and also I think if Jesus was in the digital age, he would say, "Go right to the person and don't text them or call them." I'm gonna let that one hang a little bit.
00:19:21.329 --> 00:19:23.460
Don't text or call them, but see them face to face.
00:19:24.789 --> 00:19:26.680
Because you can hide a lot in a text message.
00:19:27.750 --> 00:19:30.250
You can, you know. I'm talking to smart people, you know.
00:19:30.890 --> 00:19:35.039
You know you can. And see, and then Jesus is saying this to us.
00:19:35.039 --> 00:19:40.130
He's saying, "Assume best intentions first." He said, "Take them privately.
00:19:40.130 --> 00:19:46.099
Just talk to them. Hey, "Hey, you know this happened?" Assume they are on your side first before you assume they were against you.
00:19:47.039 --> 00:19:54.500
Because it's the enemy, it's the enemy, it's our spiritual enemy that wants to make everyone an enemy of us.
00:19:54.500 --> 00:20:00.640
And so we want to assume best intentions first before assuming the worst part.
00:20:00.640 --> 00:20:04.019
And if that doesn't work, treat them like the pagans and the tax collectors.
00:20:04.019 --> 00:20:10.509
Now, for the longest time, I always read that verse as like, just kind of throw them to the side. But then I thought about it.
00:20:11.029 --> 00:20:14.019
How does Jesus treat pagans and tax collectors?
00:20:15.059 --> 00:20:18.750
Jesus pursues them. He loves on them.
00:20:18.750 --> 00:20:20.680
He makes space for them.
00:20:20.680 --> 00:20:22.440
He opens his heart to them.
00:20:22.440 --> 00:20:26.980
Check this out. I love the way Eugene Peterson puts this verse in the message paraphrase of the Bible.
00:20:26.980 --> 00:20:40.950
It says, "If he won't listen to the church, you have to start over from scratch. Confront him with the need for repentance and offer again God's forgiven love." It's saying go back after them with God's forgiving love.
00:20:40.950 --> 00:20:42.849
Now, let me add something here, though.
00:20:42.849 --> 00:20:52.549
Now, if someone violated you, if someone violated you, if someone broke trust with you and you need proper boundaries, I'm not saying just forgive and move on.
00:20:52.549 --> 00:20:56.480
No, no, no, you can forgive and still have healthy boundaries.
00:20:56.480 --> 00:20:57.619
And I'm going to say something.
00:20:57.619 --> 00:20:59.700
That's the importance of our freedom groups.
00:21:00.650 --> 00:21:03.220
That's why I'm encouraging people to get into freedom groups.
00:21:03.220 --> 00:21:06.440
If you have one group to pick this semester, freedom group.
00:21:07.400 --> 00:21:16.599
That's the one to go because we need to learn how to find healing from yesterday's traumas in order to live the freedom that God has for us in tomorrows.
00:21:16.599 --> 00:21:17.779
And I'm going to say this again.
00:21:17.779 --> 00:21:22.410
You may say, "Oh man, I got my kids in this program, I got this and that program." It'll take 12 weeks.
00:21:23.569 --> 00:21:25.440
It'll take 12 weeks. They'll be all right.
00:21:26.240 --> 00:21:28.099
They'll be okay. Someone else can pick them up.
00:21:28.740 --> 00:21:32.339
But you want to know what they need more than just another rehearsal to go to?
00:21:33.180 --> 00:21:34.410
They need a healthy parent.
00:21:35.769 --> 00:21:50.019
They need a parent who's willing to deal with the scary places in their hearts in order to find the freedom that God has for them so that you can now parent in a way out of a place from freedom and not from a place of bondage.
00:21:51.049 --> 00:21:52.940
Come on, I'm preaching right here.
00:21:52.940 --> 00:21:55.079
Because here's the thing, here's the thing that happens.
00:21:55.079 --> 00:21:59.289
We want to make decisions based on our places from bondage.
00:21:59.289 --> 00:22:00.579
And God is saying, no, no, no.
00:22:01.490 --> 00:22:07.220
It's time for you to start making decisions from freedom, from the hope that I have for you. And so, and so here you go, here you go.
00:22:07.220 --> 00:22:09.119
I'm going back to conflict, back to conflict.
00:22:09.119 --> 00:22:10.950
I don't know why I wipe my hair like I got hair.
00:22:11.670 --> 00:22:12.960
I don't got long hair like that.
00:22:15.269 --> 00:22:18.460
I need one of those napkins things, the handkerchiefs.
00:22:19.480 --> 00:22:20.279
Can you play the organ for me?
00:22:20.279 --> 00:22:21.480
Okay, sorry.
00:22:24.180 --> 00:22:32.559
Here's one of the healthiest things we can learn to do is assume the best before we assume the worst. We assume the best way we can assume the worst.
00:22:33.670 --> 00:22:36.160
And so we're so quick to assign motives to people.
00:22:36.740 --> 00:22:39.579
They don't care. They did that on purpose.
00:22:40.250 --> 00:22:41.829
They're not trying to disrespect me.
00:22:41.829 --> 00:22:46.480
And the reason why we assign motives to people, because we don't have freedom in our lives.
00:22:47.490 --> 00:22:51.119
That's why. And that's why the freedom groups are so important.
00:22:51.119 --> 00:22:52.319
Sorry, that's my last plug.
00:22:55.220 --> 00:22:58.430
Maybe they were tired. Maybe they misunderstood.
00:22:59.230 --> 00:23:01.700
Maybe they were carrying something you knew nothing about.
00:23:02.849 --> 00:23:05.410
Maybe they had no idea how their words came out.
00:23:06.430 --> 00:23:09.599
So before you judged your motives, get curious about their story.
00:23:11.039 --> 00:23:13.619
And then here's the hard part, and this is what Jesus is telling us to do.
00:23:14.619 --> 00:23:17.549
Own your part. Own your part in this one.
00:23:17.549 --> 00:23:26.619
This is hard. Because when conflict happens, we naturally ask, "What did they do wrong?" But maturity asks, "What was my part in this?
00:23:27.650 --> 00:23:32.930
What was my part in this?" And sometimes the most spiritual thing you can say is, "I was wrong.
00:23:32.930 --> 00:23:38.170
I'm sorry. Will you forgive me?" And that's not weakness, that's Christ-likeness.
00:23:38.170 --> 00:23:54.559
Instead of asking, "How do I prove I'm right?" Ask, "What does love require of me right here?" See, healthy relationships aren't relationships where nobody ever disagrees, I would actually say you're probably not in a healthy relationship but you never disagree with somebody.
00:23:55.609 --> 00:23:57.329
I think disagreement is a part of life.
00:23:57.819 --> 00:24:09.690
Healthy relationships are where people know what to do when they disagree, when they disagree. See, unresolved conflict takes up emotional space that God never intended for it to occupy.
00:24:11.019 --> 00:24:15.559
And much like Nick's word during worship today, Jesus says, "Go.
00:24:16.569 --> 00:24:19.220
Go. You don't got to stand still.
00:24:19.220 --> 00:24:27.880
I am fighting for you. And watch how I'm going to fight for you when I part the sea for you. Just go. Go after what I'm calling you to do.
00:24:29.059 --> 00:24:33.009
No more excuses. Just go.
00:24:33.549 --> 00:24:38.920
Just go." And there is joy in knowing I did what Jesus asked me to do.
00:24:38.920 --> 00:24:40.119
This is so good. This is so good.
00:24:40.539 --> 00:24:47.640
There's joy in knowing I did what Jesus asked me to do, even if the other person doesn't respond perfectly.
00:24:49.200 --> 00:24:50.400
You may do all those things.
00:24:51.559 --> 00:24:53.400
And they may say, "Nah, I never did that.
00:24:54.730 --> 00:24:59.230
You're making that up. That wasn't me." That's fine. You obey Jesus.
00:24:59.990 --> 00:25:01.160
And that's what really matters.
00:25:01.160 --> 00:25:02.839
That's what really matters.
00:25:02.839 --> 00:25:06.339
Last part is this. Don't forget what's at stake.
00:25:06.339 --> 00:25:07.710
Don't forget what's at stake.
00:25:07.710 --> 00:25:09.480
This is what Paul says to the two women.
00:25:09.480 --> 00:25:15.750
He says, "And I asked you, my true partner, to help these two women, "for they worked hard with me in telling others the good news.
00:25:15.750 --> 00:25:28.119
"They worked along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, "whose names are written in the book of life." Paul zooms out. He zooms out and says,"Remember the bigger story that's happening here. "Remember the bigger story.
00:25:28.119 --> 00:25:30.930
"You're not just two people who are frustrated with each other.
00:25:30.930 --> 00:25:38.089
"You belong to Jesus." And I think this is where it gets personal for us, because this isn't only about conflict inside the church.
00:25:38.089 --> 00:25:40.390
This is about conflict within your marriage.
00:25:40.390 --> 00:25:43.640
Conflict in your family and your friendships with your co-workers.
00:25:43.640 --> 00:25:45.160
The person who disappointed you.
00:25:45.160 --> 00:25:46.519
The friend who hurt you.
00:25:46.519 --> 00:25:48.680
The family member you've been avoiding.
00:25:48.680 --> 00:25:50.789
The person who drives you crazy.
00:25:50.789 --> 00:25:56.920
Because if you are a Jesus follower, the way you treat people matters because people matter.
00:25:57.839 --> 00:26:01.220
Because people matter. The way you handle conflict matters.
00:26:01.220 --> 00:26:03.809
The way you speak when you're angry matters.
00:26:03.809 --> 00:26:06.559
The way you respond when someone hurts you matters.
00:26:06.559 --> 00:26:08.759
The way you forgive, it matters.
00:26:08.759 --> 00:26:21.059
Jesus said, "If your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciple." In other words, people should be able to see something about Jesus by watching the way you love people.
00:26:23.200 --> 00:26:26.400
And it's easy to love people when people are nice to us.
00:26:29.119 --> 00:26:36.700
But this is where this Jesus thing actually begins to do something in us when we have the love people who are not very lovable.
00:26:38.250 --> 00:26:48.640
when we love people that hurt us, when we love people that we would prefer just to push away and put a big wedge there and pretend like they don't exist.
00:26:50.339 --> 00:27:10.480
That's when this Jesus thing begins to really challenge your heart and you begin to say, "Wow, Jesus went on a cross for people that would deny Him, but I'm not willing to talk to my coworker who stole my Starbucks." I know I'm simplifying it to get a laugh which I didn't get one.
00:27:12.480 --> 00:27:23.039
But seriously he went to a cross for people, for the very people that hung him on that cross.
00:27:25.009 --> 00:27:31.630
For the very people that put him there while they're nailing, while they're putting nails in his hands, he's thinking I'm doing this for you.
00:27:33.730 --> 00:27:38.559
When they mock Him and put a crown of thorns on His head, He's saying, "I'm doing this for you.
00:27:41.089 --> 00:27:57.559
I'm doing it for you." Following Jesus gets real when somebody hurts you, when someone misunderstands you, when someone says something they shouldn't have, when somebody disappoints you, when you have every reason to hold the offense, Jesus starts working on your heart. So let me make it practical.
00:27:57.559 --> 00:27:58.960
I know we like practical around here.
00:27:58.960 --> 00:28:00.160
Let me make it practical.
00:28:00.680 --> 00:28:02.309
Who are you thinking about right now?
00:28:03.170 --> 00:28:05.930
Because as I started this message, someone came to your mind.
00:28:07.230 --> 00:28:08.430
Someone came to your mind.
00:28:10.630 --> 00:28:21.000
Maybe it's a spouse, maybe it's a parent, maybe it's a kid, a sibling, someone at your work. Maybe it's a friend you haven't talked to in months.
00:28:21.789 --> 00:28:24.750
And before we ask, what do they need to do?
00:28:25.339 --> 00:28:27.619
Jesus followers start differently.
00:28:28.289 --> 00:28:36.660
We say, "Jesus, what are you asking me to do in this?" And for some of you, Jesus is asking you to go to Freedom Group.
00:28:38.119 --> 00:28:42.960
Before you can re-engage that relationship, you need to find some freedom in your heart.
00:28:44.119 --> 00:28:46.799
Some of you, Jesus is saying, "Yeah, I want you to make the call.
00:28:48.039 --> 00:29:01.880
I want you to make the visit." And let's be clear, forgiveness doesn't mean what happened was okay, but forgiveness means I'm not going to let what you did turn me into someone Jesus is not calling me to become.
00:29:03.539 --> 00:29:12.440
I'm not going to let what you did to me create in me a bitterness towards all people. I'm not going to let what you did in me make me hate all men.
00:29:12.440 --> 00:29:31.559
I'm not going to let what you did to me make me say I'm guarded and I can't live free. I'm not going to let what you did to me cause me to become the person that God did not call me to be. And forgiveness says I'm letting go of that thing because what Christ did for me on the cross is greater than that hurt or offense.
00:29:31.559 --> 00:29:34.039
And I'm going to find freedom in my Savior.
00:29:34.039 --> 00:29:40.380
And so I'm going to put it in the hands of Jesus and Paul tells the church.
00:29:40.380 --> 00:29:54.660
he says, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just because it's a good thing to do." No, no, no, we forgive, just as in Christ, God forgave you.
00:29:55.900 --> 00:30:01.299
My forgiveness is an overflow of the grace that He has given me.
00:30:01.740 --> 00:30:06.259
Because without His grace, He has given me, I am dead to sin.
00:30:06.259 --> 00:30:13.299
But because of His blood on the cross, because I'm a blood bought child of the most high God, I can forgive.
00:30:14.579 --> 00:30:15.779
And that's what we do.
00:30:17.500 --> 00:30:23.210
we forgive the person. We move forward and that's where joy comes from.
00:30:23.210 --> 00:30:27.470
My joy isn't dependent on whether you finally admit that I'm right.
00:30:28.490 --> 00:30:33.319
My joy isn't dependent on whether you recognize my apology or you don't.
00:30:33.869 --> 00:30:43.319
My joy is rooted in the fact that Jesus has forgiven me, that Jesus has reconciled me to God, and that Jesus is teaching me how to live free.
00:30:43.319 --> 00:30:47.579
And Jesus invites us out of the bitterness and into His wholeness.
00:30:47.579 --> 00:30:50.880
He invites us out of the gossip and into life-giving language.
00:30:50.880 --> 00:30:54.960
He invites us out of the resentment and into the freedom that He offers.
00:30:54.960 --> 00:31:13.480
So I say to you today LVC, make the card, buy the airhead and ask, "What can I do to make this right?" So God, Jesus, Holy Spirit.
00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:17.960
This is a heavy one today, Holy Spirit.
00:31:20.700 --> 00:31:23.089
This one isn't one plus one equals two, God.
00:31:25.680 --> 00:31:26.880
It's complex.
00:31:28.640 --> 00:31:29.839
It's emotional.
00:31:32.569 --> 00:31:35.759
And so, God, I hand you the disagreement.
00:31:37.680 --> 00:31:39.480
I hand you the conflict.
00:31:42.579 --> 00:31:47.859
And I even feel the Holy Spirit saying to some people here, get from out of hiding.
00:31:48.799 --> 00:31:51.190
You can't avoid this one anymore.
00:31:54.200 --> 00:31:56.319
Because what it's doing in you.
00:31:58.279 --> 00:32:14.480
Yep, I just feel the Holy Spirit saying that, that He is concerned about what this bitterness is doing in you. concerned about what this resentment is doing in you.
00:32:15.450 --> 00:32:16.900
Okay I'm gonna be bold today.
00:32:17.660 --> 00:32:20.069
I feel the Holy Spirit saying this.
00:32:20.579 --> 00:32:26.509
He wants to have union with you but there is a blockage and it's that unresolved issue.
00:32:29.210 --> 00:32:34.349
And he's saying he wants you to remove it because he wants union with you, connection with you.
00:32:36.160 --> 00:32:47.680
The The scriptures say, "Leave your gift at the altar and go make it right." This is a hard one today, Jesus.
00:32:50.059 --> 00:32:51.289
This is a hard one today.
00:32:53.220 --> 00:32:55.829
But we know you made us to do hard things.
00:32:59.220 --> 00:33:01.109
And so we lean into you, Jesus.
00:33:07.380 --> 00:33:11.029
And so in Jesus' name, I speak relational healing in Jesus' name.
00:33:13.640 --> 00:33:16.940
I pray the fathers and sons reunited.
00:33:18.920 --> 00:33:21.230
The mothers and daughters reunited.
00:33:27.319 --> 00:33:29.480
God, I pray households restored.
00:33:32.059 --> 00:33:35.799
And I pray generational curses broken in Jesus' name.
00:33:44.480 --> 00:33:46.569
Holy Spirit, come in power and in might.
00:33:49.980 --> 00:33:52.660
We trust you with this thing, God.
00:33:55.440 --> 00:34:09.340
Jesus, we rejoice that you reconciled us to our Father God, and that we can have freedom and hope in you.
00:34:13.659 --> 00:34:15.309
So we say yes to you, Jesus.
00:34:16.880 --> 00:34:18.079
You have our yes.
00:34:19.340 --> 00:34:22.769
In Jesus' name. The church says, "Amen.
00:34:23.170 --> 00:34:24.949
Amen. Amen. Amen."
