00:00:09.839 --> 00:00:14.160
Hello and welcome to this edition of the Intermodal Logistics Podcast.
00:00:14.240 --> 00:00:19.920
I'm Kevin Baxter, joined by my co-host, InTech Logistics, President Shelly Austin.
00:00:20.239 --> 00:00:20.640
Hi, Kevin.
00:00:20.879 --> 00:00:27.120
Hey Shelly, and we are at the Intermodal Expo, IANA's Intermodal Expo in Long Beach.
00:00:27.199 --> 00:00:30.000
We'll be doing a few episodes from here.
00:00:30.320 --> 00:00:38.880
And our first one, we are honored to have Kerry Kirchhoffer joining us from Union Pacific, the uh senior VP premium.
00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:39.439
Yes.
00:00:40.399 --> 00:00:41.039
Thank you very much.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:42.320
Yes, thanks for having me.
00:00:42.399 --> 00:00:42.799
Thank you.
00:00:43.039 --> 00:00:45.920
So so first of all, tell us uh a little bit about yourself.
00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.600
We like to when we when we have a guest for the first time, get a little background.
00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:56.479
So so tell us a little bit about your background, your uh position right now, and uh maybe a few things that you do day to day.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:00:57.119
Okay.
00:00:57.679 --> 00:01:02.960
Um, so it seems crazy, but next month I'll have 34 years at Union Pacific.
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:03.520
Wow.
00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:08.400
Uh the time has flown by, and I love working in the logistics space.
00:01:08.640 --> 00:01:12.879
Um last 15 years have been heavily focused on intermodal.
00:01:13.040 --> 00:01:21.120
My current role is senior VP of Premium, and so what we handle is all intermodal, meaning domestic and international and automotive.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:24.799
Um and a couple things that are on my plate right now.
00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:27.280
We're very focused on over-the-road conversion.
00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:34.799
There's a lot of freight coming at us very quickly, and we're wanting to try and find the best fit for a conversion to be able to come over.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:42.000
And we're also trying to stay with this demand picking up so quickly, we're trying to make sure that service and capacity stays ahead of demand.
00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:43.840
Excellent.
00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:48.719
Well, Carrie, we uh we all just came out of a great session with with Jim Venice.
00:01:48.959 --> 00:01:50.319
Um, it was a lot of fun.
00:01:50.959 --> 00:02:00.879
And so tell us a little bit about um from a UP perspective, how important is it as we're here at the expo to engage with the stakeholders of Intermodal?
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:04.959
And what kind of headline uh message do you want them to take away?
00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:08.879
Um well, first of all, what a great way to kick off the conference this morning.
00:02:09.120 --> 00:02:11.680
Packed house, uh really strong message.
00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:16.240
I think that everybody really enjoyed uh having the opportunity to attend the morning session.
00:02:16.400 --> 00:02:21.120
Uh for us, uh, our intermodal stakeholders are key because intermodal is a bit unique.
00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:23.439
It's a team sport, is what I like to call it.
00:02:23.599 --> 00:02:33.919
So you have the shipper, the IMC, the Drage carrier, and the railroad, and we all need to be on the same page so that we can deliver a strong door-to-door service for our customers.
00:02:34.080 --> 00:02:40.560
Um, and places like IANA are a great way to get all the stakeholders together to make sure we're going in the same direction.
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:41.919
So that was great.
00:02:42.080 --> 00:02:52.800
In terms of Jim's key message, I think it would be in my words, uh, this merger really works because it's what customers have been asking for all along.
00:02:53.120 --> 00:02:57.520
A simple, fast, reliable way to get freight across America.
00:02:58.080 --> 00:03:00.639
So, on that, you you mentioned the merger.
00:03:00.719 --> 00:03:05.360
And so the proposed merger with the Norfolk Southerner is definitely the talk of railroad right now.
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:07.759
It's it's kind of fun and exciting.
00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:16.000
Um, and so tell us a little bit from an intermodal standpoint what a single-line transcontinental service would do for shippers and IMCs alike.
00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:16.719
Okay.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:19.919
Um I'd say three things.
00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:22.400
Uh, an unmatched reach.
00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:27.680
We're gonna open up new opportunities for new markets that with a single line basis.
00:03:27.840 --> 00:03:34.159
We're also going to help reduce the actual cost as we put more capacity into the network.
00:03:34.319 --> 00:03:41.039
So, what I mean by that is we're gonna put capital in the ground for not only our main lines, but also for our terminals.
00:03:41.199 --> 00:03:45.599
Uh, it looks like over a million lifts of new capacity that will go in as part of the merger.
00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:56.560
And then the big thing is faster service, um, which allows us, because this merger is really focused on taking trucks off the highway, and that is what's gonna allow us to be able to do that.
00:03:56.800 --> 00:03:57.199
Awesome.
00:03:57.360 --> 00:03:58.960
Who doesn't want fast service?
00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:02.159
Well, and that's a good segue into our next question.
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:10.080
In the uh latest uh JOC survey, the uh inner the intermodal service scorecard, and and Jim mentioned this too, actually.
00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:17.120
The uh the UP is the top vote getter for for intermodal service from the uh IMCs that are surveyed and everything.
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:27.120
So um what would you say is driving that on your end and and how are you handling the uh the increase that's come from uh truckload conversion?
00:04:27.360 --> 00:04:31.600
Yeah, because truckload conversion is is I mean, everything's way up in intermodal right now.
00:04:31.839 --> 00:04:41.680
Um I would say that probably the big thing for us is that we needed to make sure that customers could see what optionalities they had.
00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:47.920
And what I mean by that is um the railroad needed to be prepared for the freight before it got here.
00:04:48.079 --> 00:04:49.040
So, how do you do that?
00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:52.800
That means you actually have to invest in the freight before you even see it.
00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:58.800
So at Union Pacific, what that looks like for us is it means a new Twin Cities ramp in Minnesota.
00:04:58.959 --> 00:05:18.800
It means a brand new international ramp in Phoenix, Arizona, a new Kansas City terminal uh that we just built last year, Inland Empire, which is in the heart of the fastest growing warehouse district in Southern California, several expansions with the next one coming out in February, and then in Northern California, let's not forget that we've got Lathrop.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:20.319
And that's just to name a few.
00:05:20.480 --> 00:05:26.720
So customers really want to make sure that the capacity is gonna be there and ready for them when they when they come over.
00:05:26.959 --> 00:05:29.600
The next thing then is uh technology.
00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:34.560
We really had to take a deep dive into technology, and I would say from two different ways.
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:38.800
Um, because intermodal is a team sport, you got to focus on the ramps.
00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:47.199
And what I mean by that is at the ramps, if that driver doesn't get on and off the ramp efficiently, they just don't want to come to your terminal anymore.
00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:50.079
So for us, it was precision gate technology.
00:05:50.160 --> 00:06:01.680
It allows the truck drivers as they come onto the ramp to move in quickly and exit quickly off the ramp, being able to turn their day faster and efficiently when they come into a Union Pacific ramp.
00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:02.879
So that's really nice.
00:06:03.040 --> 00:06:06.000
And if you're a shipper, what keeps them up at night?
00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:11.600
I really think what keeps c customers up at night is being able to know where their freight is at all times.
00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:17.920
So when you hand something off to intermodal, one of the concern areas is but I can't see it.
00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:23.519
And so GPS for our rail box program has been a key focus for us for the past 18 months.
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:28.800
We finally have GPS on all of our boxes and it allows customers that pure visibility.
00:06:29.120 --> 00:06:34.639
And then the final piece that makes it all flow, and Jim referenced this this morning, is surge resources.
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:42.720
We are unique in that Union Pacific believes in having excess capacity available for when the freight wants to come.
00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:50.160
So that's both cruise and locomotives, and that has served us well as the intermodal has begun to double-digit tick up.
00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:54.160
So it's been uh it's been a really nice uh adventure that we've all been on this year.
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:55.839
We've been waiting for a while.
00:06:56.720 --> 00:06:57.439
And we're excited.
00:06:57.600 --> 00:06:57.839
Yes.
00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:03.279
Uh so you so you mentioned a lot of this, but you you know, with the conversion, because that's what we're talking about, right?
00:07:03.360 --> 00:07:05.360
You've for so many years we talked about shifting.
00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:07.040
Yes, and we weren't growing.
00:07:07.199 --> 00:07:07.360
Yes.
00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:17.600
Um, so with the conversion uh from truck to intermodal, tell us a little bit about how uh you I heard this a lot that you know, okay, well, truck is having issues and we're gonna use intermodal.
00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:23.279
How do we get shippers to we're we're seeing shippers try this service that haven't ever tried the service?
00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:27.199
We're seeing shippers that went away from the service and now are coming back to the service.
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:32.000
How do we get them to keep it as part of their actual strategy and maintain it?
00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:33.680
Yeah, that's a really good question.
00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:36.879
And and I think that you it's easy for us to fail.
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:46.720
Ann referenced it today in her keynote, where she basically said, they're starting to come, but now the real trick is how do you get them to make it part of their strategy for the long term?
00:07:46.959 --> 00:07:56.399
So at Union Pacific, we believe that you really need to treat your intermodal customers that have been with you for 20 years differently than a brand new convert.
00:07:56.560 --> 00:08:06.079
And what I mean by that is the first 90 days are critical because to a customer that's been shipping truck all their life, they're used to calling up a truck driver and getting an answer.
00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:08.720
Well, intermodal's a little bit different, right?
00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:10.560
They can they know exactly when that's gonna land.
00:08:10.720 --> 00:08:16.560
Intermodal, we need to have conversations with them so that we're successful about what's your cutoff time?
00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:17.920
What is a cutoff time?
00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:20.560
When's the doc ideally want to receive that freight?
00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:21.920
And how do we back into that?
00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:28.240
So it's just making sure you have those good upfront conversations first so that we're very successful.
00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:33.200
So we do that, but the real key to UP and our secret sauce is our IMCs.
00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:44.720
And that's because the IMCs open so many doors for us to new customers, and they are great at hand holding a new customer and being able to answer all those questions that I just talked about.
00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:53.679
So if you can get them and you can be successful for the first 90 days, it goes from being an experiment to being part of their strategy.
00:08:54.240 --> 00:08:55.600
Well, personally, thank you.
00:08:55.759 --> 00:08:59.200
I we we love that we love the hype for IMCs.
00:08:59.600 --> 00:09:00.879
I that was awesome.
00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:12.559
And in speaking of that, to help uh us IMCs out there, in your perspective, if there's a shipper on the fence about intermodal, what what would you say to them to get them over that fence?
00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:13.440
Yes.
00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:19.919
So we have a very small percentage of the share that moves across the nation's highway today, and we want to expand that.
00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:27.360
And so I think when you're going after a new customer, the key is not to say, let's take all of your business and convert it on day one to intermodal.
00:09:27.440 --> 00:09:30.080
Intermodal will be your solution set for everything.
00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:38.080
I like to say, let's take a lane and let's deep dive on that lane and see what your true needs are and see if it's a successful candidate for intermodal.
00:09:38.240 --> 00:09:41.519
And once we figure that out, let's test that lane for 90 days.
00:09:41.600 --> 00:09:46.960
And once that that's successful, let's test it, measure it, and then decide where we go from there.
00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:48.559
And that's on to the next lane.
00:09:48.879 --> 00:09:54.879
So that I think is the way that our 20-year veterans that have been moving intermodal have gotten so big.
00:09:55.120 --> 00:10:02.720
And that's how we're going to be successful in getting over-the-road customers to switch and really be able to become those longtime converts.
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:03.679
That's awesome.
00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:07.279
Okay, Carrie, the this last one, I it's near and dear to my heart.
00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:13.200
You have had such a successful career and in a male-dominated environment.
00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:19.840
Um, and so what would you, you know, we're here working with all these students and these college kids, which you and I are very impressive students.
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:22.000
They are feeling much better about the future.
00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:23.200
I I am too.
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:24.240
And we love this, right?
00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:25.200
We love working with them.
00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:30.720
So in this male-dominated environment with these younger females that are wanting to get into the space, yeah.
00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:32.720
What what advice do you give them?
00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:38.799
Um, so the the good part is, you know, I told you at the beginning that I've been in the industry now for 34 years.
00:10:38.960 --> 00:10:44.480
So the first thing is I believe women show up, and when they show up, they need to stay.
00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:50.480
So when you look around the room, if you're the only female in the room, which I don't think is predominant anymore, I would agree with you, right?
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:53.519
But if it is, know that it's important that you stay.
00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:57.200
I stayed and look, and it it turned out awesome for me.
00:10:57.440 --> 00:10:59.919
So that I think is the first piece of advice.
00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:04.320
But the second piece of the advice I have is make sure you learn the job.
00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:06.159
And intermodal is a bit unique.
00:11:06.320 --> 00:11:11.600
So not only do you have to learn the railroad, you got to learn the IMCs, you got to learn the customer.
00:11:11.679 --> 00:11:18.399
And the customer means go walk the dock on the railroad, go to a terminal and actually see how what makes it tick.
00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:24.399
Make sure you understand what causes a customer to be successful and unsuccessful.
00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:29.279
Because if you don't, you're gonna be the quietest person in the room and it's gonna be a lonely career.
00:11:29.360 --> 00:11:32.799
If you just know how to do the PowerPoint, that's not gonna get you there.
00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:34.480
So I think that's really important.
00:11:34.799 --> 00:11:43.600
Um, and then I would say after that, I've been very fortunate in my career that I wasn't always in the room, but I had some people above me advocating.
00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:44.960
So find your people.
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:46.559
I've done a really good job.
00:11:46.720 --> 00:11:53.840
The number one thing I do is I try to now in this current role, I try to surround myself with people that are better than I would be.
00:11:53.919 --> 00:11:57.279
Um, and I try and clear paths for them so that they can go do their job.
00:11:57.519 --> 00:12:03.519
That I think is the important thing so that when you're not in the room, someone up above is talking about you.
00:12:03.600 --> 00:12:08.000
And when you get there, so someone like me, it's make sure you do it for the next woman.
00:12:08.240 --> 00:12:16.960
Find find a mentor or mentee person and work with them so that we can just continue to have a really balanced work environment for everybody.
00:12:17.279 --> 00:12:18.080
That's awesome.
00:12:18.320 --> 00:12:18.799
Love it.
00:12:19.039 --> 00:12:20.480
Great words of advice, yeah.
00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:22.000
And Carrie, we appreciate it.
00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:22.879
Thanks very much for joining us.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:24.000
You guys, thank you, Jeremy.
00:12:24.320 --> 00:12:30.320
This is a great forum, and I really appreciated the opportunity to be able to come on and talk to all the people out there in IANA land.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:31.679
Yeah, absolutely.
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:36.480
And thank you for joining us as well on the Intermodal Logistics Podcast.
00:12:36.559 --> 00:12:38.559
You can find us wherever you get your podcasts.
00:12:38.639 --> 00:12:41.840
