00:00:15.009 --> 00:00:17.460
Welcome to the Integrative Mother Experience Podcast.
00:00:17.800 --> 00:00:22.280
I'm your host, Sarah Swift, wife of twenty-eight years and mother of three teenagers.
00:00:22.690 --> 00:00:35.807
I want to have conversations about why so many mamas wearing multiple hats, working, serving others, or owning a business, especially in the beauty industry, feel like they need to choose between their work and their family, and they don't have enough quality time.
00:00:35.954 --> 00:00:39.725
We'll also uncover causes of overwhelm, lack of wellbeing, and joy.
00:00:40.134 --> 00:00:52.125
I'm here with over three decades of experience working in the beauty industry, owning several types of businesses starting in my early twenties, and sharing stories to help other mothers avoid that feeling of always missing out.
00:00:52.514 --> 00:00:54.223
I'm also here with solutions.
00:00:54.634 --> 00:00:57.024
Time is an asset that we can't get back.
00:00:57.154 --> 00:00:59.473
I can't wait to dive into these deep conversations.
00:00:59.704 --> 00:01:12.646
I hope you will join me Welcome back, beautiful mamas.
00:01:13.006 --> 00:01:19.135
Today's episode is about your body storing emotion and where your energy goes.
00:01:19.436 --> 00:01:20.465
Let's dive in.
00:01:21.323 --> 00:01:30.164
So to begin this episode, I've been learning a lot about this, especially in the last few years, and it makes a lot of sense.
00:01:30.274 --> 00:01:49.864
I've used a lot of holistic modalities over the years for myself and for my immediate family members, and it is really fascinating everything that is available to us and what we actually have control over and what we don't have control over.
00:01:50.763 --> 00:02:03.786
And as my mind has expanded to new modalities and ideas, it's interesting the things that have come up and the things that I actually discern so much differently now.
00:02:04.457 --> 00:02:18.198
And it's a perfect time to talk about it because we're in that season right now of discernment, and most of you as mothers have kids that are either back in school or going back to school, and there's a lot of change happening.
00:02:18.687 --> 00:02:25.927
But soon, that more grounded, structured feeling can maybe enter, especially if that's what you're craving.
00:02:26.018 --> 00:02:28.217
That would be really normal in this season.
00:02:29.027 --> 00:02:51.018
I feel this way every year, and I can't wait to get back into a structured, more routine sense of schedules, where I'm supposed to be as far as picking up and dropping off children, and activities that I'm going to watch or enjoy, as well as my businesses.
00:02:51.387 --> 00:03:07.811
What times and days I'm going to work on the back end of my businesses and do my podcast, as well as just enjoy my life, and that means my daily walks with my dog, Nora.
00:03:07.850 --> 00:03:13.683
That means time with my girlfriends, date night with my husband, and all the things.
00:03:13.854 --> 00:03:26.514
So when we go through emotions and your body is able to fully express what it needs to express, you're not necessarily storing them.
00:03:27.104 --> 00:03:30.144
So in today's episode, that's what we're really going to dive into.
00:03:30.318 --> 00:03:46.027
Have you ever noticed that there are people in your life that may have made you feel selfish for setting boundaries or created self-doubt when you felt really sure about a decision or a desire that you had?
00:03:46.377 --> 00:03:49.527
So this quote from Maya Angelou I think is so perfect.
00:03:49.598 --> 00:03:50.927
"Never explain yourself.
00:03:51.518 --> 00:04:17.079
Your friends don't need it, and your enemies won't believe you anyway." So if you are the variable and your transformation is determined on whether or not you shift, you take that next best step, you believe in yourself, and you truly believe in your desires that they're there for a reason, then your perspective is just so different.
00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:22.779
And that's how you begin to behave with it, is what your perspective is.
00:04:22.826 --> 00:04:33.490
And when you don't fully process your emotions and you store them in your body, you might start to feel tightness, you might start to feel pain.
00:04:33.795 --> 00:04:36.375
I've talked about that in previous episodes.
00:04:36.526 --> 00:04:41.475
I went through a really painful year in two thousand twenty-five.
00:04:41.656 --> 00:04:49.906
And sometimes it's something that can be taken care of in the medical world, and sometimes it actually goes deeper than that.
00:04:50.636 --> 00:05:02.495
And I think a lot of times people either just don't know that there are options available or they don't believe that they need to actually do the work.
00:05:02.755 --> 00:05:05.189
And so this is where it gets really interesting.
00:05:05.355 --> 00:05:09.865
I believe, and I heard this not that long ago, that problems don't make you stronger.
00:05:10.095 --> 00:05:20.084
I really liked that saying because I look at problems and chaos and different hardships in my life as lessons.
00:05:20.548 --> 00:05:25.189
And it's not that I want them to arrive and welcome them.
00:05:25.499 --> 00:05:30.478
It's just that I know that they are going to come and it's just part of the process.
00:05:30.863 --> 00:05:38.629
And so for example, just because you make more money, it doesn't mean that you're not in debt.
00:05:38.862 --> 00:05:41.973
People that win the lottery prove this all the time.
00:05:42.752 --> 00:05:56.512
It also is really evident in a lot of female entrepreneurs that have taken over especially the social media world in the last decade or so.
00:05:56.994 --> 00:06:03.339
Sometimes making more money means more responsibility and more overwhelm.
00:06:03.399 --> 00:06:24.800
And now it's interesting because we're hearing so many of the popular names and now we're hearing so many of those women admit that it just created more overwhelm and they were leaning too far into the masculine and not allowing their feminine energy to be in balance.
00:06:24.819 --> 00:06:36.007
So this I definitely relate to and I think it's so very interesting And when we also think about what's yours and what's not yours.
00:06:36.314 --> 00:06:55.019
So if we have the capacity to hold things and to receive things, for example, if we're talking about money, if you have the capacity to hold it and to receive it with gratitude, then you are going to be able to use that for joyous things and live in abundance.
00:06:55.329 --> 00:07:02.199
But if you're not able to receive it and hold it with gratitude, chances are it's going to leak out of your bucket.
00:07:02.540 --> 00:07:11.954
And when I think about even the healing process, healing begins with learning to process at all.
00:07:12.593 --> 00:07:22.463
So ignoring the feelings that we're feeling of overwhelm or maybe anger or even joy.
00:07:22.579 --> 00:07:26.589
In this example, can you take in the joy that's in front of you?
00:07:26.759 --> 00:07:35.586
Can you really enjoy the small moments and not just have that feeling of, I will rest when I get there.
00:07:35.930 --> 00:07:39.240
I will enjoy my day at the end of my day.
00:07:39.430 --> 00:07:51.709
That's when I deserve it," or,"I will enjoy my life when I retire someday." Well, you don't even know if you're going to be here at that point because it's not really up to you.
00:07:51.987 --> 00:08:02.766
So I think that really discerning what's happening now versus seeing situations that might happen, we really don't know.
00:08:02.915 --> 00:08:07.300
And feeling our feelings like the water duct.
00:08:07.579 --> 00:08:10.290
I've talked about this in the past, the water ducts in your body.
00:08:10.980 --> 00:08:27.357
So for example, if you are going through a really hard time and you are dealing with grief, and with grief, you're not allowing the crying to come out, and you're not allowing yourself to feel those feelings.
00:08:27.720 --> 00:09:04.821
Or maybe it's anger, and maybe you've been taught it's not ladylike to show your emotions of anger, and you are to be cheerful and respectful at all times, and it's not safe to actually acknowledge what your needs are and what your desires are, including a different idea or a different desire It's interesting because I think about whether my water ducts are clean in that analogy, and I think it ebbs and flows.
00:09:05.081 --> 00:09:10.551
But the cleanliness of your water ducts in this analogy determines the quality of your water.
00:09:11.182 --> 00:09:27.698
in the book The Mountain Is You, when the subject is talked about if the valve is shut off and it's not allowed to pass, and then the water intensely pressures and then it creates serious damage to the parts of the body that are no longer receiving the flow.
00:09:27.698 --> 00:09:33.418
This begins to have a ripple effect, and it's not a positive ripple effect on the entire body.
00:09:33.884 --> 00:10:05.565
So I think about the reset that you get when you're grieving and you allow yourself to really cry, to lean on people that you trust In general, when I'm feeling like I really need to be able to discuss something, but I'm not looking for necessarily feedback, I'm looking for the few people in my life that I can ask to listen, but just listen.
00:10:05.658 --> 00:10:10.581
And when I ask that, it's a skill not everybody has.
00:10:10.581 --> 00:10:23.971
So there are very few people I feel I can trust that they can do this well, because I think it's just human nature that when somebody's talking about something, you start to relate it to your own life.
00:10:24.711 --> 00:10:34.961
And sometimes we don't want somebody to necessarily refer to their own experience when we're going through something and we're trying to process it.
00:10:35.091 --> 00:10:51.418
And maybe when we actually feel that we have the answers within us and we want to trust our own discernment without maybe the perspective or the lens of the other person.
00:10:51.534 --> 00:11:02.605
So I think this is a skill that is very rare, but if you have somebody in your life that you can trust to do this, it is a real true gift.
00:11:02.721 --> 00:11:11.438
And I have found that I've needed this throughout my life and I have not found it in many people.
00:11:11.769 --> 00:11:28.139
So when things begin to back up Sometimes our lenses are blurred on a certain situation, or you feel yourself jumping to the worst-case scenario, as in like you're in fight or flight.
00:11:28.139 --> 00:11:33.629
And I have found that journaling really helps me.
00:11:34.089 --> 00:11:42.359
So as part of my morning reset, no judgment, I'm just starting my day, writing my thoughts out.
00:11:42.389 --> 00:11:53.605
I might be thinking about what I dreamt about the night before, what I did the day before, what my intentions are for the day ahead, and I just kind of go from there.
00:11:53.731 --> 00:11:56.572
But I'm not trying to change how I feel.
00:11:57.272 --> 00:12:15.432
So that's the discernment that I think a lot of times not really feeling your real true feelings and letting your body store those emotions in a negative way, you're not even fully aware of where your energy is going in that point.
00:12:15.761 --> 00:12:34.846
So I had a recent activity in one of my groups by a mentor of mine In this recent activity, it was interesting because we created buckets and the question was,"Is it mine?" Is it a yes?
00:12:35.333 --> 00:12:36.673
Is it a maybe?
00:12:37.104 --> 00:12:38.464
Or is it not mine?
00:12:38.943 --> 00:12:39.943
And that would be a no.
00:12:40.173 --> 00:12:44.807
And I love this exercise because sometimes we just feel it.
00:12:44.817 --> 00:12:46.826
We just know we want something.
00:12:46.866 --> 00:12:51.354
It's just a full yes So it's a full yes.
00:12:51.803 --> 00:13:01.947
Or if it's a maybe, that might mean it's an old version of me that's just comfortable or wanted that in a different season.
00:13:02.106 --> 00:13:09.216
Or maybe the version of me that was scared and young and not the woman that I am now.
00:13:09.384 --> 00:13:13.974
If something is not mine, then it needs to be a no.
00:13:14.157 --> 00:13:29.326
And this is what I've really learned, and it's so interesting because as I've really stepped into what I desire and the woman that I've become and the mother that I am and desire to be.
00:13:29.726 --> 00:13:39.037
Messing with other people's destiny by trying to control their desires is something that I think is really common.
00:13:39.299 --> 00:13:46.277
And I've noticed people trying to do this in my life, and not always with bad intent.
00:13:46.287 --> 00:14:01.216
Sometimes it's with selfish intent, but sometimes it's just that people can't even see you in a different role, or they just don't truly understand what your desires are because they're used to you in a certain role.
00:14:01.907 --> 00:14:11.370
And maybe they're someone that doesn't embrace a lot of change in their lives, or they're very rigid, they're not open to new ideas.
00:14:11.806 --> 00:14:19.495
Or maybe it's because you're not serving them in a way that they want to be served, and it's an entitlement issue.
00:14:19.785 --> 00:14:28.755
It could be a variety of things, but even with children or with your relationships, I think it's just really interesting to think about that.
00:14:28.806 --> 00:14:42.495
Because if something is someone's destiny and their desire, and you're trying to guide them in a different direction, you really have to ask yourself,"Is this yours to even be stepping into?
00:14:42.546 --> 00:14:44.686
Are you trying to control the situation?
00:14:45.316 --> 00:14:48.916
Are you allowing them to solve the problem on their own?
00:14:49.446 --> 00:15:18.660
And are they even asking you for advice?" If you're not being asked for advice, and back to my previous example of trying to find people in your life that can truly just listen without putting their two cents in, and truly listen without not only their two cents, but what their experiences are, just listen to what you're saying, it creates a completely different safe space.
00:15:19.235 --> 00:15:23.750
And there's something called radical empathy, and it's so interesting.
00:15:23.750 --> 00:15:28.677
So pointing out wrong for someone to feel the way that they do.
00:15:28.818 --> 00:15:37.649
So basically, they shut down because they have shame, and that makes it worse So are you safe to actually feel the way that you feel?
00:15:38.101 --> 00:15:48.481
Are you surrounding yourself in environments that allow you to feel the way you feel and to express your desires and to explore new opportunities?
00:15:48.839 --> 00:15:51.499
And are your relationships full of support?
00:15:51.989 --> 00:16:09.033
That maybe seasons sometimes change and situations are different and that's okay I think also that what I've learned is to validate other people's feelings, and that teaches us to validate ourselves.
00:16:09.312 --> 00:16:27.566
So maybe instead of lashing out at other people or judging, we can take a pause and before we respond, maybe we can just let them have their feelings and allow ourselves to have our feelings.
00:16:28.355 --> 00:16:29.975
That's part of not controlling.
00:16:30.806 --> 00:16:34.505
That's also part of us not having to overexplain.
00:16:34.812 --> 00:16:36.503
And trusting.
00:16:37.222 --> 00:16:49.033
Trusting is such a big one for me because I don't feel like we have to explain everything that we do, every desire that we have, because people are different.
00:16:49.033 --> 00:16:50.113
It's going to change.
00:16:50.133 --> 00:16:51.763
We're hopefully going to evolve.
00:16:52.472 --> 00:16:56.293
Hopefully, we're going to experience new things in life.
00:16:56.708 --> 00:17:07.778
And I can't make that commitment if I need to have to justify everything that I'm doing, and I don't want others to feel that way around me either.
00:17:08.045 --> 00:17:10.575
my children are part of this example.
00:17:10.775 --> 00:17:24.236
They are gonna make choices that I don't necessarily want for them, or I wouldn't maybe do myself, but that's part of being a parent, trusting that they're going through the process.
00:17:24.736 --> 00:17:26.286
We're here to support.
00:17:26.336 --> 00:17:31.385
We're here to offer a safe space and be the example.
00:17:31.865 --> 00:17:34.729
Number one, be the example.
00:17:35.199 --> 00:17:39.669
Show them what a loving relationship is between you and your partner.
00:17:40.459 --> 00:17:45.519
Show them what a safe home and family meals are like.
00:17:45.528 --> 00:17:47.929
Show them what a vacation is like.
00:17:48.388 --> 00:18:37.805
Show them that you can have fun together, that you don't have to control all of their decisions, and that's planting the seeds and letting the harvest grow because they are not yours to control, just like you don't want somebody to control you or your decisions and how you want to be a mom, how you want to be a wife, how you want to run your business, how you want to fill in the blank So I think that the resolution is when we integrate and we take what happened and let it be part of your story, so you're not denying it or excusing it, but you're also not carrying the weight of it.
00:18:38.095 --> 00:18:44.545
And if that makes sense to you, then where your energy is going is pretty clear.
00:18:45.115 --> 00:19:00.058
Your energy's going to your desires and the things that you want to focus on, and what you're gonna focus on is what you intend So my takeaways are going to be when we are willing to accept the darkness, it's only then that we can find the light.
00:19:00.669 --> 00:19:05.038
And to heal, we have to learn to process.
00:19:05.422 --> 00:19:35.618
And lastly, how we think about it versus seeing the situation for what it really is, the facts That is so important because if your energy is leaking out and you're not able to really discern things for what they actually are, your body's going to in turn store those emotions, and it will create something within you that is a block.
00:19:35.888 --> 00:19:37.388
I hope this is helpful.
