ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Most therapy techniques keep people stuck, while breath work and somatic methods often lead to profound transformation—if you know how to use them right. Dr. Richard Blake, a researcher with the largest randomized controlled trial on conscious connected breathing, shares why traditional talk therapy often fails to resolve deep trauma and how breath work can offer faster, more effective healing. Discover why over diagnosed trauma and the social contagion of mental illness distort our understanding of mental health, and learn how a shift in perspective could be life-changing. Richard explains the scientific evidence behind breath work’s ability to reduce anxiety and overwhelm, with some people experiencing life-changing results in a single session—yet it’s not for everyone. He challenges the assumptions baked into modern therapy culture, revealing how we’ve overcomplicated what should be simple and effective. You'll learn about the real roots of mental health struggles—how genetics, personality traits, and societal influences play a bigger role than childhood trauma or big T events. Richard dives into the flaws of retrospective studies, the myth of trauma causing all suffering, and how over-digging for unverified past wounds can actually reinforce trauma instead of healing it. He offers a nuanced view of trauma, symptoms, and the importance of moving forward rather than obsessing over the past. This episode is essential listening if you're a therapist, healer, or mental health enthusiast frustrated with the limitations of conventional approaches. Whether you’re curious about integrating breath work into your practice or seeking insights on why traditional therapy often fails to produce lasting change, Richard’s research-backed perspective offers a fresh, evidence-based direction for true healing.
