ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Weeks After a 727-Pound Squat, His Body Was Shutting Down
He was the strongest he had ever been; and he had no idea how close he was to not being here at all.
A year ago, Paul McSween deadlifted 701 pounds and squatted 727 in the same week. Days before his meet, he went to the ER feeling lightheaded and found out his body was in metabolic collapse: active pancreatitis, dangerously high blood sugar, and triglycerides so high they maxed out the hospital’s machine. Doctors were stunned he was walking around at all. What followed was nearly a week on an insulin drip, a list of diagnoses, and a hard question with a son on the way: what now?
Paul’s answer was to take ownership. He walked back into the gym weeks later and squatted 606. With his endocrinologist, a dietitian and his coach, he rebuilt every pillar: medical, nutrition, training and recovery. He talks honestly about starting a GLP-1 and why it isn’t cheating, losing his gallbladder six months in, and treating recovery as seriously as training. He competed in two Highland Games, and he’s down more than 60 pounds and three weight classes while getting stronger pound for pound. Now he’s heading back to the platform healthier than he’s ever been, and close to coming off his medications.
It’s not a stopper; it’s a redirection. Pick a date, commit, and go.
Shared in Paul’s own words; his diagnoses, medications and treatment were managed by his own medical team. This is his personal account, not medical advice.
