59 | Defensive Disasters, Offensive Hope & the 49ers' 2026 Future

A loss to the Atlanta Falcons, but is it time for the Faithful to panic? Not according to Donte Whitner.
On this episode of The Grit Code, 11-year NFL veteran and three-time Pro Bowler Donte Whitner joins Bay Area sports analyst The Rodfather, Mr. Rod Brooks, to break down what went wrong against Atlanta, expose the biggest weaknesses in the 49ers defense, and explain why this loss might actually reveal something encouraging about San Francisco's future.
The guys don't hold back when discussing the defensive breakdowns that allowed Michael Penix Jr. to find success against the 49ers. Whitner delivers a brutally candid assessment of Ji'Ayir Brown and Jack Jones, questioning their execution, tackling, and ability to hold up in critical situations. The conversation gets heated as the two debate defensive play-calling, missed blitz opportunities, and why San Francisco failed to consistently pressure a quarterback who struggles under pressure.
But it wasn't all bad news. Fred Warner's performance against Bijan Robinson gets a closer look, as Whitner explains the discipline, physicality, and football intelligence required to contain one of the NFL's most dangerous running backs.
On the offensive side, the guys examine how Christian McCaffrey's injury changed Atlanta's defensive approach, how Kyle Shanahan's system created opportunities in the running game, and why the emergence of young receivers Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing could be a major development for the 49ers.
And what about Brock Purdy? Despite the interceptions and disappointing result, Whitner and The Rodfather debate whether Purdy's performance actually demonstrated growth as a quarterback, why his MVP candidacy shouldn't be dismissed, and how the upcoming games against the Raiders and Cowboys could define his season.
Finally, with the bye week approaching, the guys turn their attention to the NFL trade deadline. Should John Lynch prioritize a pass rusher, cornerback, or wide receiver? And can the 49ers address their biggest weaknesses before the season slips away?
From explosive defensive criticism to encouraging signs on offense, this episode delivers an unfiltered, player-level breakdown of where the 49ers stand and what needs to change. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com
