00:00:13.804 --> 00:00:16.234
Hi, and welcome to the podcast.
00:00:16.414 --> 00:00:25.173
It's been a while since I recorded a podcast, and I'm gonna share more about that as we go along in this episode today.
00:00:26.059 --> 00:00:28.818
I'm wanting to start with this question for you.
00:00:29.178 --> 00:00:31.638
Are you feeling lost at work?
00:00:31.849 --> 00:00:33.918
And if so, you are not alone.
00:00:34.429 --> 00:00:37.368
We are living in extraordinary times.
00:00:37.368 --> 00:00:43.728
It's challenging all of us to new levels of resilience, this period of global.
00:00:44.368 --> 00:01:02.609
Uncertainty and angst and much more, of course has presented work and career problems for many people, many I speak to feel a bit stuck at work or they're seeking a change, but the employment climate isn't very supportive at the moment.
00:01:03.058 --> 00:01:11.039
Others have lost motivation or are feeling a bit lost, and some are just struggling, feeling overwhelmed with work and volume.
00:01:11.759 --> 00:01:17.308
And they're feeling like they're in a fog and they're wishing for change or clarity.
00:01:17.838 --> 00:01:20.149
Now, of course this isn't everyone.
00:01:20.149 --> 00:01:27.799
Some of you will feel like you are in your lane and having a great time, but if this is you, then this episode is for you.
00:01:28.399 --> 00:01:41.778
Maybe you are between roles or you are out of work, or maybe you are running a business and your constantly worrying about the future, or you are in a role but you are not sure and you're feeling a bit unhappy.
00:01:43.519 --> 00:01:51.769
And if you are not sure what to do, if you are feeling stuck in the fog, then as I said, this episode is for you.
00:01:52.069 --> 00:02:06.368
I'm going to share a bit of my own recent journey of fog from which I'm finally just emerging and I'm going to offer ways for us to navigate career and work challenges in these complex times.
00:02:08.769 --> 00:02:16.538
As you probably know, late last year, I closed my coach training business and headed into a semi sabbatical.
00:02:16.538 --> 00:02:22.598
I planned to have some time where I wasn't working full time so that I could do some thinking.
00:02:22.989 --> 00:02:26.169
I had no idea, no clear idea of what.
00:02:26.433 --> 00:02:27.993
Would come next for me.
00:02:28.024 --> 00:02:42.334
I knew a few things I will always coach and I knew I would return to podcasting here I am and writing, but I couldn't get a sense of what work beyond this would look like for me in the next few years.
00:02:42.544 --> 00:02:47.463
How would I continue to serve people in a way which also served me?
00:02:48.788 --> 00:02:57.218
Since the middle of last year really, I've been feeling quite stuck and I've been wondering if I would ever find something new.
00:02:57.549 --> 00:03:02.109
I've made a few attempts to find the right thing in the past few months.
00:03:02.169 --> 00:03:05.588
Started a few things, but nothing's felt quite right.
00:03:06.068 --> 00:03:13.449
And then over the past few weeks, a new offering has started to emerge, and there'll be more of that in coming weeks.
00:03:13.748 --> 00:03:16.123
But I also found myself struggling to commit.
00:03:16.953 --> 00:03:21.872
As I was grappling with this, a book I've been eagerly awaiting was published.
00:03:21.902 --> 00:03:25.203
It's What Makes a Life by Jim Collins.
00:03:25.562 --> 00:03:29.312
You may know his other work, particularly his book, good to Great.
00:03:30.242 --> 00:03:34.112
In what makes a life he's seeking to answer just that question.
00:03:34.682 --> 00:03:48.483
I am fascinated by this question, both in how I help clients think about their own lives and in this recent moment, really for myself, what do I do to make the most, if this next part of my life?
00:03:49.943 --> 00:03:51.802
I devoured his book.
00:03:51.802 --> 00:03:53.212
I finished it already.
00:03:53.212 --> 00:03:59.423
There's lots of underlines in it and I've no doubt I'll be ref referencing it for years to come.
00:03:59.423 --> 00:04:01.252
So prepared to be inundated.
00:04:01.673 --> 00:04:08.332
But here I want to pull out a couple of the core aspects he shares of how to make sense of life.
00:04:08.423 --> 00:04:10.312
And these are cliffs.
00:04:10.608 --> 00:04:15.527
And fog cliffs are things that we all experience.
00:04:15.527 --> 00:04:19.098
Life or work events that bring about a big change.
00:04:19.367 --> 00:04:32.548
It might be something we make happen, so we create the cliff, like leaving a job to start a business or to raise children, or in my case, closing a business or it might be outside of our control.
00:04:32.548 --> 00:04:36.208
Maybe we are made redundant or we end up feeling really stuck.
00:04:36.802 --> 00:04:39.713
In a job we don't like and we are wishing for a cliff.
00:04:40.733 --> 00:04:52.612
The fog is what usually, or perhaps always happens, a period of uncertainty with no clear sense of direction and a feeling of being lost.
00:04:53.483 --> 00:05:05.603
Jim Collins says, in the wake of a cliff, the fog can envelop us in the Merck so thick that we can only see one or two steps ahead.
00:05:06.927 --> 00:05:10.648
This framing has been so helpful for me.
00:05:10.677 --> 00:05:11.338
Sure.
00:05:11.548 --> 00:05:24.598
I created my own cliff and I cleared some space to work out what was next, but I did not expect the fog and certainly not that it would be so dent and that it would last for so long.
00:05:26.098 --> 00:05:38.127
I knew I'd been burnt out for a long time, but I hadn't expected even a longer period of recovery from the burnout, and I was so surprised by this sense of feeling lost all my life.
00:05:38.158 --> 00:05:43.737
I felt driven and ambitious and creative, and it had left me.
00:05:43.918 --> 00:05:45.478
I felt abandoned.
00:05:45.478 --> 00:05:45.867
Scared.
00:05:46.593 --> 00:05:47.343
Lost.
00:05:47.612 --> 00:05:59.072
I continued to work with a small number of coaching clients and I've loved being able to offer them my full focus, but in the past I've always had more in me, more than just one thing.
00:06:01.173 --> 00:06:05.673
I started asking myself was I finished, but I felt too young.
00:06:05.733 --> 00:06:09.392
I know many people retire at 62, but not me.
00:06:09.392 --> 00:06:10.742
That's not the plan I had.
00:06:10.952 --> 00:06:13.322
My father is still working at 93.
00:06:13.413 --> 00:06:14.642
That was my plan.
00:06:14.882 --> 00:06:23.283
I felt adrift and embarrassed, and I became so worried that this problem was permanent, that I'd lost my drive.
00:06:23.612 --> 00:06:28.833
But I kept thinking, I think I've still got this kind of third act in me at least.
00:06:29.132 --> 00:06:30.122
I thought I did.
00:06:31.533 --> 00:06:37.983
In the last few weeks, clarity has started to emerge finally about what is next.
00:06:38.312 --> 00:06:42.002
But even then, I've been scared to embrace it and to take action.
00:06:42.333 --> 00:06:46.622
Last year when I was burnt out, I reached for some ideas, but they never felt right.
00:06:46.653 --> 00:06:49.173
And what if this was another one of those?
00:06:50.822 --> 00:06:56.283
After listening to Jim Collins talk about the fog, I began to think about what others say about the fog.
00:06:56.283 --> 00:07:01.353
And a coachy client also reminded me of this as someone who's.
00:07:02.252 --> 00:07:07.892
Spent her entire career to date, helping people think about their careers.
00:07:07.923 --> 00:07:10.233
I should have been expecting this period.
00:07:10.802 --> 00:07:18.872
William Bridges, who talks about transitions, describes it as the neutral zone, the time between the old and the new.
00:07:19.023 --> 00:07:27.362
He describes this time is often being full of anxiety and confusion as well, of course, as creativity and possibility.
00:07:28.098 --> 00:07:35.358
Martha Beck writes in her book that I love called The Way of Integrity about the dark wood of error.
00:07:35.478 --> 00:07:43.307
She is referencing Dante in the Divine Comedy and the dark wood of error is described as a foggy swamp.
00:07:43.577 --> 00:07:46.427
As Dante says, I've lost my true path.
00:07:47.237 --> 00:07:52.848
I knew all of this, and so I should have been expecting my own fog or dark wood.
00:07:53.117 --> 00:07:55.642
I was in it and I was surprised and struggling.
00:07:57.798 --> 00:08:00.437
Then I was stopped in my tracks.
00:08:01.187 --> 00:08:10.937
It was in the middle of the struggle that a few months ago I had the most extraordinary experience, one that defies logical explanation.
00:08:11.358 --> 00:08:21.978
And I've been a bit unsure about sharing this experience, but it stayed with me so much and it describes the next stage of my working life and how it is emerging.
00:08:21.978 --> 00:08:24.677
So I thought I would share it.
00:08:25.728 --> 00:08:36.557
So it was on a morning a few months ago that I was feeling particularly low living without the sense of clear direction was really eroding my sense of self and who I am.
00:08:36.618 --> 00:08:45.977
And at the end of my morning meditation, in a moment of utter desperation, I asked for guidance from anyone who was listening.
00:08:45.977 --> 00:08:46.788
I didn't care.
00:08:46.998 --> 00:08:50.687
The universe, God, creative intelligence, I pleaded.
00:08:51.368 --> 00:08:53.437
I really dunno what to do.
00:08:53.437 --> 00:08:55.717
Please give me some guidance.
00:08:56.648 --> 00:09:01.898
Soon after this, I got into a taxi to go and meet a friend for breakfast.
00:09:02.107 --> 00:09:08.947
And on the way there I was listening to a podcast and they were talking about Lisa Miller's work on synchronicity.
00:09:09.457 --> 00:09:20.587
And again, from this low state, I pleaded, please, please, can I have some synchronicity, some signs, but what came next left me absolutely stunned.
00:09:21.758 --> 00:09:26.437
In order to share that I need to do a bit of an aside.
00:09:27.503 --> 00:09:33.232
The book I recommend the most to clients and on this podcast is The Happiness Track by Russ Harris.
00:09:33.503 --> 00:09:38.033
It's a practical guide to help us to live differently with our inner struggles.
00:09:38.482 --> 00:09:51.232
The central model in this book is called The Choice Point, and I use this model extensively with clients and have adapted it to include a wide range of tools which clients find really helpful.
00:09:51.998 --> 00:10:04.717
And for a while I've been thinking about creating a group coaching membership where I teach and coach around this and other frameworks to help people to be more emotionally resilient at work.
00:10:05.317 --> 00:10:09.788
But I've been hesitating, and so back to the taxi.
00:10:10.732 --> 00:10:18.293
As I'm pleading for synchronicity, my taxi driver starts talking to me and a bit reluctantly.
00:10:18.293 --> 00:10:22.312
I pause my podcast and engage in conversation with him.
00:10:22.702 --> 00:10:25.462
He asks me if I'm going to have a good day.
00:10:25.552 --> 00:10:32.842
I loved this question, and it starts a conversation about how we can choose to have a good day or not.
00:10:33.312 --> 00:10:41.802
Belief we both shared and as we pull up to my destination, he asks me if he can share something that he personally finds helpful.
00:10:43.447 --> 00:10:49.717
He reaches over to the front passenger seat and picks up three pieces of a four paper.
00:10:49.988 --> 00:10:59.857
He looks through them and finds the one he wants and holds it up to show it to me, and for a moment, I'm completely dumbstruck is what he's showing me.
00:10:59.857 --> 00:11:02.467
The choice point it can't be.
00:11:02.498 --> 00:11:06.187
Why would a taxi driver in Singapore be showing me the choice point?
00:11:06.878 --> 00:11:14.288
He starts talking, but I'm not really listening because I'm too busy looking for the reference at the bottom of the page and there it is.
00:11:14.378 --> 00:11:17.648
It says The Choice Point by Russ Harris.
00:11:18.128 --> 00:11:19.268
How could this be?
00:11:19.357 --> 00:11:28.508
I asked for guidance and I was shown the exact model that's sitting on my mind that's always open on my computer by this lovely taxi driver.
00:11:28.957 --> 00:11:33.307
He then went on to explain how he had found acceptance and commitment therapy.
00:11:33.307 --> 00:11:40.898
It's called act, which the model is based on, and that he was reading another act book, which I also have sitting next to my desk.
00:11:41.827 --> 00:11:47.827
I thanked him, telling him he couldn't possibly ever know how meaningful that moment was.
00:11:48.427 --> 00:11:49.418
It didn't end there.
00:11:49.778 --> 00:12:03.278
I sat down to breakfast with my friend and shared this experience with the driver, and after I told the story, she said, that sounds so much like the way Lisa Miller describes synchronicity.
00:12:03.967 --> 00:12:05.738
Again, I was stunned.
00:12:06.712 --> 00:12:10.283
So Lisa Miller does describe synchronicity in this way.
00:12:10.403 --> 00:12:19.432
She said it isn't just a matter of perception or awareness, it's a physical phenomenon, something that actually happens in the world.
00:12:21.322 --> 00:12:25.732
Since that moment, I've been kind of sitting on what to do with this.
00:12:25.793 --> 00:12:30.982
I asked for guidance, and the guidance that came couldn't have been more explicit.
00:12:31.822 --> 00:12:34.942
I think it was so stark that I almost didn't trust it.
00:12:35.092 --> 00:12:42.592
That wasn't my plan yet, and I got sidetracked by another idea, but slowly I kept coming back to it.
00:12:42.623 --> 00:12:49.432
I kept remembering this experience when I asked for guidance, and now I guess I can see the fog clearing.
00:12:49.793 --> 00:12:54.923
I know I what I need to do, and I feel completely aligned with it.
00:12:57.263 --> 00:13:12.493
As I was reflecting on this and preparing for this podcast, I went back to see what York said about synchronicity, and Jung describes synchronicity as events that coincide in time and appear meaningfully related, yet they lack a discoverable, causal connection.
00:13:13.722 --> 00:13:15.643
So what does this mean for all of us?
00:13:15.732 --> 00:13:17.802
Well, it brings me back to the book.
00:13:17.832 --> 00:13:18.852
What Makes a Life?
00:13:19.212 --> 00:13:29.472
This framing of cliffs and fog has helped me to make sense of things over these past few months, and I've also been noticing the same pattern with some of my clients.
00:13:29.653 --> 00:13:33.253
There have been these cliff events and these periods of fog.
00:13:33.898 --> 00:13:41.697
And Collins describes these periods as coming with feelings of pressure or impatience to figure it out and get on with it.
00:13:41.798 --> 00:13:44.498
And I've certainly been putting this pressure on myself.
00:13:45.217 --> 00:13:48.457
We will all have moments where we're in the right place at work.
00:13:48.577 --> 00:13:50.798
And Collins would describe this as doing work.
00:13:50.798 --> 00:13:52.087
We are encoded for.
00:13:53.092 --> 00:14:05.182
We will all have cliffs and we will all have fog, and sometimes we don't even have to have a cliff event, but the fog emerges while we are in the same role where we feel unhappy and lost.
00:14:05.753 --> 00:14:09.352
So what can we do when we are feeling surrounded by the fog?
00:14:09.743 --> 00:14:15.982
I went back to look at what Colin said, what Martha Beck was saying and what William Bridges was saying, and a few others.
00:14:16.072 --> 00:14:18.052
And here are suggestions that they.
00:14:18.597 --> 00:14:25.018
Have that help us to think about how to navigate periods where we can't really see where we are going.
00:14:26.038 --> 00:14:31.138
The first is actually to honor this stage, to see it as part of a life.
00:14:31.347 --> 00:14:34.138
Colin saw it in all of the lives he studied.
00:14:34.467 --> 00:14:43.947
We can choose not to pull against it as I have been, but to allow the process of walking through the dark wood and to be patient with ourselves.
00:14:45.143 --> 00:14:49.582
We can ask for guidance and we can talk with our trusted advisors.
00:14:49.763 --> 00:14:55.613
People we know will listen and help us to work out what is true for us, not the expectations of others.
00:14:55.673 --> 00:15:00.923
And these can be our in life guides, coaches, colleagues, friends and family.
00:15:01.102 --> 00:15:05.003
And if it's right for you or for us, we can ask the universal consci.
00:15:06.427 --> 00:15:09.008
We can listen for what we're encoded to do.
00:15:09.248 --> 00:15:19.658
Collins talks extensively about how we all have encodings for our work, and we can lean into those gently, and that when we do, maybe the fog will clear.
00:15:19.658 --> 00:15:27.878
So, for example, I know I'm encoded to teach, and so looking for ways to teach is helping me to find a way out of the fog.
00:15:29.903 --> 00:15:37.403
We can take small steps and find small ways to express what we are encoded to do whilst we wait for the fog to clear.
00:15:37.643 --> 00:15:40.552
So this might be looking for expressions of something you love.
00:15:40.763 --> 00:15:42.682
If you feel stuck in your job.
00:15:42.682 --> 00:15:47.722
You might notice a few moments in the day where you can express your strengths or your values.
00:15:49.253 --> 00:16:00.947
It's important to be gentle with ourselves, and while we are doing these small steps and trying some small tests, we can be listening to ourselves and finding what is true for us.
00:16:02.432 --> 00:16:09.182
Curiosity can be really helpful here, and we can look at what is inspiring us, what's interesting us.
00:16:09.182 --> 00:16:20.731
We can look for those moments where we feel a glimmer of feeling good, even if it's just a few seconds where we feel content and we can follow those, we can see where they might take us.
00:16:22.081 --> 00:16:28.201
Certainly for me, taking time for quiet and solitude and rest has been really helpful.
00:16:28.846 --> 00:16:35.687
It can be tempting in periods where we're in the fog to be really busy and productive to try and push a way forward.
00:16:35.897 --> 00:16:37.517
But actually, maybe we don't.
00:16:37.697 --> 00:16:39.076
Fog can lift.
00:16:39.136 --> 00:16:43.157
When we stop trying, the sun can come out and burn it off.
00:16:43.846 --> 00:16:51.466
When we take time to tune in and listen to what might be best for us, maybe the fog will clear by itself.
00:16:53.822 --> 00:16:59.371
We've all had periods of fog in the past, and these can also be learning moments for us.
00:16:59.371 --> 00:17:08.612
You can look back at your last fog period and think about what helped you to move out of it and what you can do to identify the next best steps.
00:17:10.126 --> 00:17:14.237
You can ask the question, what would I do even if no one paid me?
00:17:14.267 --> 00:17:25.396
This is described by Jim Collins as the hedgehog question, looking for ways to move more towards what we would do, even if nobody was looking, can give us some feelings of fulfillment.
00:17:26.116 --> 00:17:29.386
And of course, you can build or join a community.
00:17:29.507 --> 00:17:36.227
You can find some trusted people to help you through this period and watch this space because there's certainly one coming from me.
00:17:37.997 --> 00:17:47.207
I've got many journaling prompts for you which might help you if you are in this period, and these are available on my Substack, which is found.
00:17:48.362 --> 00:17:53.821
At Jean belfor.substack.com and I'll put a link to this in the show notes.
00:17:54.211 --> 00:17:56.612
Journaling is extremely helpful in the fog.
00:17:56.642 --> 00:18:01.051
I feel two journals over the last few months, even more than I normally do.
00:18:01.382 --> 00:18:12.811
And looking back, I can see how this has really helped me to organize my thoughts, to notice patterns, to tune in to small intuitions, and really to start testing out my next steps.
00:18:14.146 --> 00:18:22.307
As I've said, I'm really happy to share that the fog is clearing and my new offer is coming together, and oh, I feel excited about it.
00:18:22.307 --> 00:18:29.237
I feel energized and motivated and really happy to be moving forward into the next stage.
00:18:29.267 --> 00:18:34.592
And so I encourage you if you are in the fog, to hold the face to know that the fog will lift.
00:18:35.112 --> 00:18:36.491
It might take some time.
00:18:36.491 --> 00:18:43.662
It might take lots of some, but it will lift and you will be able to move forward into what's coming next for you.
00:18:44.670 --> 00:19:00.599
As I've said, there's more information available over on my substack and also if you have comments or things that you would like to share, you can add these to the post in Substack and we can have a conversation about what to do when we are in the fog.
