ABOUT THIS EPISODE
If you’ve ever felt proud of being the one who holds it all together, this will hit close to home. I’m talking about non-attachment, not as indifference, but as a real-life practice that helps us love people deeply without carrying their pain, managing their choices, or tying our identity to their outcomes.
I connect the dots across Buddhism, Hinduism, and modern psychology, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). We explore why clinging to what is temporary creates suffering, what “right action without obsession over reward” looks like in daily life, and how learning to observe your thoughts without judgment can calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety. If you’re navigating grief, burnout, people pleasing, or the pressure of being the “responsible” one, these frameworks offer language and tools that actually work.
I also share the personal side: two intense years of loss, illness, injury, and the moment my well-practiced boundaries cracked. A 253 mile solo stretch in the wilderness became a living lab for letting go, rebuilding trust in myself, and remembering that each of us has our own curriculum to live. I close with five practical ways to train non-attachment, including expecting nothing while staying open to everything and catching the ego when it tries to “fix” others.
If this resonates, subscribe, share the episode with a friend who carries too much, and leave a review with your biggest non-attachment challenge so we can keep the conversation going.

TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:27.059 --> 00:00:30.179
Hello, hello, hello, my beautiful people.
00:00:30.339 --> 00:00:31.939
How you doing today, huh?
00:00:32.259 --> 00:00:34.899
Sam Solo going on it today.
00:00:35.140 --> 00:00:40.820
My sister Polly is out and about traveling in the universe and celebrating her birthday.
00:00:40.899 --> 00:00:47.700
So I'm here today to talk to you about practicing non-attachment.
00:00:48.659 --> 00:00:51.140
Practicing non-attachment.
00:00:52.260 --> 00:01:04.260
Note I used the word practice as in doing something over and over and over and over to get better at something.
00:01:05.299 --> 00:01:11.459
Because honestly, non-attachment is a frickin' ninja skill, people.
00:01:12.179 --> 00:01:17.620
It can take a lifetime to get good at it, and it requires practice.
00:01:18.019 --> 00:01:26.500
Did you guys know that non-attachment is deeply rooted in Buddhism, Hinduism, and even modern psychology?
00:01:27.219 --> 00:01:28.819
Here's some frameworks.
00:01:29.539 --> 00:01:37.859
For Buddhism, they teach that clinging to transient impermanent things creates suffering.
00:01:38.259 --> 00:01:40.899
That's what they think of attachment teaching.
00:01:41.060 --> 00:01:45.859
They teach that clinging to transient impermanent things creates suffering.
00:01:46.259 --> 00:01:56.019
In Hinduism, they teach non-possessiveness and right action without obsession of getting a reward.
00:01:56.739 --> 00:02:01.379
Nonpossessiveness, right action without the obsession of getting a reward.
00:02:01.539 --> 00:02:02.899
That's Hinduism.
00:02:03.140 --> 00:02:08.580
In Western psychology, the framework is about acceptance and commitment.
00:02:08.819 --> 00:02:21.219
It's actually ACT, the acceptance and commitment theory, which helps people observe their thoughts without judgment and take action based on their personal values.
00:02:22.020 --> 00:02:29.539
Acceptance and commitment theory is helping people observe their thoughts without judgment and taking action based on their personal values.
00:02:30.819 --> 00:02:41.139
Ooh, well, maybe I should have started off by confessing that non-attachment is indeed my biggest personal growth project for the year.
00:02:41.460 --> 00:02:47.859
For me, I call it making space to breathe and letting go so I can grow.
00:02:48.419 --> 00:02:52.500
And the reason I'm called to this development challenge this year.
00:02:52.819 --> 00:02:54.579
What is the reason?
00:02:56.500 --> 00:03:15.379
Well, these last two years of lifing, politics, the economy, family needs, work life, work, illness, injury, and as of last count, losing eight of my friends and family to death in the last 18 months.
00:03:15.620 --> 00:03:16.099
Eight.
00:03:16.979 --> 00:03:23.780
Let's just say I have felt tested to support all of those around me more than ever.
00:03:24.979 --> 00:03:35.939
But getting attached to others' pain and suffering, others' process and results is not healthy for me or anyone, frankly.
00:03:36.259 --> 00:03:41.859
And honestly, it really started to ramp up like next freaking level for me when I got sick myself.
00:03:42.259 --> 00:03:47.539
I got a bacterial and a fungal infection from the water at Iron Man, Arizona.
00:03:47.939 --> 00:03:50.340
And I battled that for about six months.
00:03:50.579 --> 00:04:00.259
And then, and then in the middle of all these things listed above called lifing, I broke my back doing CrossFit not long after.
00:04:00.579 --> 00:04:05.219
So back-to-back situations where I needed to fix me.
00:04:06.180 --> 00:04:13.379
My nervous system, my gut and digestive system, my muscle and skeletal system were all wrecked.
00:04:13.780 --> 00:04:18.819
So my instincts were to go into full-on frickin' superwoman mode.
00:04:19.060 --> 00:04:21.460
No joke, that's actually my style.
00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:28.900
See a problem, investigate, educate, empower, aka fix.
00:04:29.220 --> 00:04:33.139
All things and all humans who are broken, including me.
00:04:34.019 --> 00:04:41.379
And sometimes, as in a lot, these things or these people actually have nothing to do with me.
00:04:41.540 --> 00:04:46.659
And truthfully, I really do have zero control or impact over them.
00:04:48.339 --> 00:04:51.060
Now, that's a hard pill to swallow.
00:04:51.779 --> 00:05:03.459
And I will always be compassionate, intuitive, emotionally intelligent, generous, energetically connected to those around me.
00:05:04.500 --> 00:05:08.259
And I'm pretty sure all of that was developed for my lifetime of suffering.
00:05:08.980 --> 00:05:11.540
And honestly, almost dying twice.
00:05:11.699 --> 00:05:14.740
I laugh, but it's pretty crazy.
00:05:15.540 --> 00:05:27.300
However, just because humaning is hard and I do not like to have people around me suffering needlessly, physically, emotionally, or spiritually, does not mean it's my job to fix it.
00:05:27.540 --> 00:05:32.899
And if you're like me, this superpower can become really dark.
00:05:33.060 --> 00:05:35.860
In fact, I do say it has a dark side.
00:05:36.819 --> 00:05:42.819
Do you like to be the rescuer, the strong and wise, one that everybody leans on?
00:05:43.540 --> 00:05:53.379
Do you make yourself available at all times to be a resource day after day, no matter what the latest crisis is, no matter what human is in crisis?
00:05:54.019 --> 00:05:56.819
Can you relate to this behavioral pattern?
00:05:58.420 --> 00:06:01.300
Well, here's the hilarious part of my story.
00:06:01.860 --> 00:06:05.779
I've actually been called the boundary queen for about a decade or more.
00:06:06.899 --> 00:06:08.740
Definitely after 50.
00:06:10.259 --> 00:06:26.180
Truth is, I have worked personally very hard to create and flex limits or guidelines for myself in terms of how I interact with others, generally ensuring my physical, emotional, and mental space is protected from others' encroachment.
00:06:26.500 --> 00:06:30.500
My values are indeed my highest protected treasures.
00:06:30.899 --> 00:06:33.060
I've built this muscle.
00:06:34.579 --> 00:06:37.300
However, this non-attachment muscle.
00:06:37.620 --> 00:06:50.420
However, somewhere this last year, my boundaries broke down as I too needed to heal, have support from others, and care for my own broken body and heart.
00:06:51.699 --> 00:06:57.300
Luckily, I have now moved throughout through that really challenging cycle of life and come out the other side.
00:06:57.459 --> 00:07:03.620
I've healed, I've rebuilt my body and my brain yet again, and my heart.
00:07:04.579 --> 00:07:20.899
But those old habits and story patterns of being strong for everyone, being wise for everyone, being a resource, being there no matter what, for people to lean on were so triggered.
00:07:21.060 --> 00:07:21.939
Big time.
00:07:22.420 --> 00:07:35.300
And that old identity, my old survival instincts crept back in as I spent hours in the doctor's office on the floor in pain, and in fact on the surgery table, desperate.
00:07:36.339 --> 00:07:51.860
So here I am now, physically and emotionally healthy again, outside in nature, moving my body and spirit freely to rebuild health in all areas of my life, doing what I love.
00:07:52.339 --> 00:08:00.659
And also, that's what brought me to spending 18 and a half days and 253 miles in the wilderness alone on the JMT.
00:08:01.540 --> 00:08:15.540
That deep need and motivation to shed grief, pain, old stories, old habit identities, and reconnect with my own power and truth led me to the wilderness.
00:08:16.579 --> 00:08:24.819
The mountains and the miles allowed me to breathe back into my truth and power and release others' suffering, not just my own.
00:08:25.379 --> 00:08:34.500
And now so I continue and will continue to practice non-attachment, just like I did in the wilderness.
00:08:35.860 --> 00:08:40.740
Basically, what I did was number one, I expected nothing.
00:08:40.980 --> 00:08:44.740
And yet at the same time, I was open to everything.
00:08:45.860 --> 00:08:54.659
Number two, I tried not to judge myself or others, and instead be fully aware and engaged in the moment.
00:08:55.939 --> 00:09:05.460
Number three, as my heart was pumping and my lungs were expanding, I breathed air and space into my life rather than trying to control it.
00:09:06.740 --> 00:09:15.059
Number four, in peeling back my own layers, I discovered I was not actually the human trapped in the body.
00:09:15.460 --> 00:09:21.939
I, like all of you, are spirits or souls, simply living this lifetime inside this package.
00:09:22.500 --> 00:09:33.860
And as we experience this earth school in this crazy, crazy earth school, in this body that we were delivered into, we get to choose the curriculum.
00:09:34.179 --> 00:09:35.460
Nobody else.
00:09:36.179 --> 00:09:46.340
So being attached to others, like an academic path or coast or course load of others' lives, makes no sense at all.
00:09:46.740 --> 00:09:52.340
We need all the energy, focus, patience, wisdom to pass our own damn classes.
00:09:53.379 --> 00:10:00.019
And lastly, number five, our ego wants us to attach our identity to others' results.
00:10:00.740 --> 00:10:13.939
Our ego wants us to believe that we have the power and the answers, that we will drive results for others, our children, our friends, our family, our jobs, our communities.
00:10:14.580 --> 00:10:16.980
But the ego is bullshit.
00:10:17.700 --> 00:10:24.340
What is real and possible is that all humans deserve their own liberation and joy.
00:10:25.620 --> 00:10:28.980
All those lives who you touch are free.
00:10:29.220 --> 00:10:36.019
They are also free, just like you, to think, feel, act out their own life journey.
00:10:36.580 --> 00:10:40.019
We just share the space with them and they share it with us.
00:10:40.419 --> 00:10:52.340
We get the privilege, and this is not a work assignment, but the privilege to bear witness to the beauty of both the suffering and the salvation of those around us.
00:10:52.659 --> 00:10:57.059
Now, let's get on with your own precious life, beautiful people.
00:10:57.220 --> 00:10:59.939
And I'll see you next week.
