WEBVTT
00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:05.519
Maturing in your fitness journey is realizing that rest is also productive.
00:00:05.759 --> 00:00:07.360
Welcome back to the Embodiment Lab.
00:00:07.519 --> 00:00:08.560
My name is Addy.
00:00:08.720 --> 00:00:19.280
And in today's episode, I actually want to talk about something that has come up over and over and over again in client check-ins just this week and last week alone.
00:00:19.519 --> 00:00:24.239
And this is something that my clients struggle with pretty regularly.
00:00:24.480 --> 00:00:34.000
And I haven't actually, I don't think, talked about it, but it's definitely something that I talk about inside my program and with my clients on a basically weekly basis.
00:00:34.479 --> 00:00:43.359
And that is basically giving yourself grace, how to know when to take it easy versus when you're being a bitch, right?
00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:56.640
I work with a lot of very high achieving women who they don't need to be told majority of the time, hey, we need to pick it up.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:00:57.759
We're slacking.
00:00:58.159 --> 00:01:01.600
My clients come in and they kick ass.
00:01:01.840 --> 00:01:03.600
They hit the ground running.
00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:05.359
They check every box.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:11.359
They do everything that I tell them to do, sometimes even more, which is amazing.
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:12.560
So, so good.
00:01:12.719 --> 00:01:28.000
These women usually have backgrounds as like athletes, being very successful, you know, and they're used to the drive, they're used to the push, they're used to exhaustion.
00:01:28.400 --> 00:01:29.840
They're used to pushing themselves.
00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:30.959
They know how to.
00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:35.439
They're not a stranger to work ethic and working really, really hard.
00:01:35.760 --> 00:01:37.280
And that's a wonderful, wonderful thing.
00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:41.920
And it's gotten them so far in their lives and in their fitness journeys.
00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:45.920
However, sometimes that becomes the bottleneck.
00:01:46.000 --> 00:02:05.120
Sometimes that becomes the point where it is actually hindering us from being able to push ourselves past a certain point in our fitness journey, helping us to break out of a plateau, helping us to drive more progress and continue to see more progress.
00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:10.159
So we're going to talk about where that line is today because there's definitely a fine line.
00:02:10.319 --> 00:02:14.080
And we want to make sure that we're not, you know, walking on it like a little type rope.
00:02:14.240 --> 00:02:19.360
But we're actually very clear as to okay, when does my body actually need rest?
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:22.560
And when do I actually need to give myself grace?
00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:26.080
And when do I realistically need to push myself?
00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:38.080
A really common thing that I see in my clients and in different women that I talk to is them constantly feeling like they need to be in motion always.
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:43.599
And if they are not at the gym, they feel like they are falling behind.
00:02:43.759 --> 00:02:54.479
Or if they miss a workout, they feel like they're failing, or they feel like they're wasting their time, or they just feel like they constantly need to be doing something.
00:02:54.719 --> 00:02:58.479
Sometimes they feel that what they're doing is not enough.
00:02:58.639 --> 00:03:01.759
And so that makes them think that they need to push more.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:23.520
When some of my clients are dealing with maybe exhaustion from crazy work lives, busy social schedules moving across several states, dealing with injury, dealing with illness, dealing with just dealing with normal things that we deal with as humans.
00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:32.400
A lot of the times people will think that, you know, even though they're sick, that, oh, I'll just go to the gym anyways.
00:03:32.479 --> 00:03:34.479
Even like if it's not contagious, right?
00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:40.159
Like dealing with whatever whatever situation is going on health-wise.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:42.719
Sometimes people are like, oh, I'll just push past that.
00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:46.080
I'll just push because you're used to pushing.
00:03:47.039 --> 00:03:55.439
And a lot of the times that means that we're not able to actually feel decent during your workout.
00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:13.520
This is putting more stress on your body when your body really just needs time to recover, whether it's from that injury, whether it's from the illness, from even just like exhaustion, burnout, stress, anxiety, just life.
00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:18.959
Sometimes your body genuinely needs time and space.
00:04:19.439 --> 00:04:32.639
And you need to be okay with giving yourself that time and space, giving yourself grace, letting it be okay to rest, even if it's not necessarily planned.
00:04:32.879 --> 00:04:45.519
There's also on the flip side of that, we don't want to use every single feeling and emotion to determine whether or not we show up that day.
00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:47.600
So where is that line?
00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:50.319
When do you genuinely need rest?
00:04:50.800 --> 00:04:56.720
And when are you just uncomfortable and looking for permission to not do the thing?
00:04:56.959 --> 00:05:14.079
You don't need to choose between relentlessly pushing yourself and giving yourself endless grace, especially when that grace is just helping you to stay in the point of suffering or not feeling happy with yourself.
00:05:14.240 --> 00:05:28.000
That grace is not a vote for you to continue to stay in a place where you're unhappy with your body, but that grace needs to be used to help you determine whether or not your body genuinely needs a break.
00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:36.240
You need to learn how to adjust your effort to the season that you're in without fully abandoning yourself.
00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:41.519
This should never be a matter of do I show up for myself or do I not for today?
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:54.399
A very, very common thing that I hear is that if you feel that you can't give it your full 100% effort, then it's not worth it at all.
00:05:54.720 --> 00:06:02.720
And again, this is determined by okay, like is your body genuinely fighting something right now?
00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:06.319
Does your body genuinely need time to recover?
00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:11.120
Or are you just feeling a little bit stretched, a little bit tired?
00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:19.199
Maybe you're a little stressed, you're a little anxious, maybe you are experiencing some pre-period symptoms.
00:06:19.279 --> 00:06:23.360
I know that will hit me like a ton of bricks every single month.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:33.279
But I want you to understand that there's a spectrum of how much effort you are able to put in every single week.
00:06:33.519 --> 00:06:41.360
That doesn't mean that the only time that you see progress in your fitness journey is if you are showing up 100%.
00:06:42.079 --> 00:06:43.199
There's a spectrum.
00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:44.800
We'll just go by like 10.
00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:49.040
So, like 10, 20, 30%, all the way up to like 80, 90, 100%.
00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:52.800
In a perfect world, you're putting in 100% effort.
00:06:53.120 --> 00:07:04.639
But I need you to know that there is about 80% effort that you need to put in in order to actually drive results.
00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:05.519
80%.
00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:07.839
So there's some wiggle room.
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.600
There's some room for a cheat meal or two throughout the week.
00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:21.600
There's some room for lower effort workouts here and there, periodically, there's some room, just a little bit of wiggle room, right?
00:07:22.399 --> 00:07:26.639
But that doesn't mean that it's 80 to 100% or nothing.
00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:38.160
Because if you have a week where you don't feel that you can give 80 to 100%, that doesn't mean that you decide that you're gonna give 0%.
00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:49.040
What does your effort, your body, your brain, what does showing up look like on that week?
00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:52.160
Maybe it's 50 to 60 percent.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:56.879
If that is what you can handle, then we show up at 50 to 60%.
00:07:57.279 --> 00:08:00.959
We need to we need to actually figure out what that 50 to 60 percent looks like.
00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:23.360
Let's say, for example, your week, you show up five times a week to the gym and you hit your macros and your calories seven days out of seven days, maybe, and like that's your 100%, and you're getting in 10,000 steps and you're recovering two days out of the seven, right?
00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:25.120
Maybe that's your 100%.
00:08:25.600 --> 00:08:29.439
And this is just a very generic example, not like actual protocols.
00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:51.679
Let's just say that your 50% effort that you can contribute to this week is let's say two workouts, a couple walks, and instead of hitting 10,000 steps, we're hitting about like a couple days, maybe like four days, we're hitting the 10,000 steps, but then three days we're hitting about 6,000 steps.
00:08:51.759 --> 00:08:54.799
And that's about what your 50% looks like.
00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:57.679
Then let's show up with that 50%.
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:09.440
Because what you have to realize is that you're not going backwards, you're not losing progress, you're not a failure unless you stop the thing entirely.
00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:16.000
An object in motion stays in motion unless acted on by an outside force.
00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:23.759
So, can we keep the object in motion, even if that means that the object is not moving up?
00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:28.639
I'm thinking of like gravity or the actual physical object.
00:09:28.799 --> 00:09:30.080
This is an example.
00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:33.679
I'm literally like an analogy, I'm literally pulling out of my butt right now.
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:44.480
But I'm kind of thinking, you know, the Olympic sport, the I think it's like the shuffle thing, where it's like you have the little ball kind of thing on, I think it's ice.
00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:45.519
I think.
00:09:45.679 --> 00:09:58.720
I don't know anything about this, but you like send it down the ice, and then you have like the other two people with the little brooms that are like sweeping back and forth to like control how it moves.
00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:00.480
I don't know why that's what my brain is thinking of.
00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:07.919
If you got what sport in the Olympics that I'm talking about from that very awful explanation, good job.
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:20.720
But that's kind of what I'm thinking of is if giving it 100% effort is like the guy sending the disc, the ball, the whatever that's called, down the ice, if it's even ice, I don't know.
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:24.879
If that's 100%, like that force leaving his hand.
00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:38.799
And let's just say, for example, even though this is not how the sport works, but let's just say that week after week of giving 100%, the hand is continuing to push the thing down the court, the ice, the whatever it is.
00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:50.320
And maybe the week where you feel a little bit of an injury coming on, or you feel a little bit of an illness coming on, or maybe work is just a little bit extra crazy this particular week and you feel exhausted.
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:53.440
Maybe your effort is about that 50% or 60%.
00:10:54.159 --> 00:10:58.000
Can we just let that thing just coast on the ice?
00:10:58.240 --> 00:10:59.360
Just coast.
00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:14.320
You saying that because you can't give 100% effort, so you're going to give 0% effort is the same as somebody taking one of the sticks, the little broom.
00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:23.279
And instead of like doing a little thing in front of the little ball, like where they're shuffling, you're just taking that stick and stopping the ball.
00:11:23.440 --> 00:11:26.799
That's what you're doing when you say, Oh, I'll just give 0%.
00:11:27.360 --> 00:11:29.519
You want to keep that object in motion.
00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:31.440
You want to keep your momentum going.
00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:38.399
You want to keep moving in the right direction, even if it means that you're not giving it full speed ahead.
00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:41.840
That was such a wonky explanation.
00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:46.639
But hopefully, my brain, um, hopefully you can see what was happening in my brain.
00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:54.080
But basically, like, why on earth would you just like fully stop when you can just maybe coast and just maintain what you can?
00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:56.559
Because maintaining is also a good thing.
00:11:56.720 --> 00:12:00.240
Not every single week in your fitness journey is going to look like full speed ahead.
00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:01.039
And that's okay.
00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:04.159
That's actually very normal because that's kind of just how life goes.
00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:08.159
It ebbs, it flows, it coasts, but we don't want to go backwards.
00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:11.200
And the only way that we would go backwards is if we stop.
00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:15.039
Adapting, adjusting the plan, doing all these things.
00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:16.879
That's not stopping, that's adapting.
00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:17.919
That's continuing.
00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:19.200
Whoa, English?
00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:20.240
That's hard.
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:23.279
That's continuing to keep the object in motion.
00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:30.480
So consistency is actually your ability to keep showing up when 100% isn't available.
00:12:30.799 --> 00:12:39.840
That is where long-term results are built, because that is when you are actually building longevity, sustainability, all of these things.
00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:45.919
And that is what helps you to actually maintain the habits that you're doing for the rest of your life.
00:12:46.080 --> 00:13:02.159
So when you have whatever situation where you are trying to determine, hey, whether you should give yourself grace or whether you're being a bitch, determine what your capacity is on that specific day and show up at that capacity.
00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:09.039
So if you wake up and your capacity is 40%, how can you show up 100% of that 40%?
00:13:09.600 --> 00:13:11.840
And that doesn't mean that your commitment changed.
00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:16.399
That just meant that you are adapting to what you can give.
00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:20.240
If you're sick, your capacity is legitimately lower.
00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:23.200
You slept four hours, your capacity is lower.
00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:26.080
You're going through something emotionally devastating.
00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:27.600
Again, lower.
00:13:27.759 --> 00:13:30.320
Your job is unusually demanding that week.
00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:31.120
Lower.
00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:35.200
You simply don't feel like training because you're tired after work.
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:38.879
That, my friend, might just be discomfort.
00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:42.559
That is not necessarily a situation where you need to give yourself grace.
00:13:42.879 --> 00:13:50.480
That's when you're being, to say it so nicely and with so much love in the world, that's when you're being a little bit of a bitch, right?
00:13:50.960 --> 00:13:56.159
So the goal isn't how do I force myself to operate at 100% every day?
00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:03.600
It's given what I actually have available today, what does showing up actually look like for today?
00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:10.240
So here's a couple of things to think about to determine whether you need grace or if you're avoiding discomfort.
00:14:10.559 --> 00:14:14.799
One, is there an actual reason that my capacity is lower?
00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:16.159
Or is it just a feeling?
00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:18.240
Do I just not feel like doing it?
00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:23.759
Because not wanting to do something is not necessarily a reason not to.
00:14:23.919 --> 00:14:31.120
There's a difference between my body genuinely needs recovery and my couch sounds a lot better than squats right now.
00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:37.840
Trust me, there's a lot of days that I'm like, man, I would love to just go rot on the couch and not go to the gym.
00:14:37.919 --> 00:14:38.480
But you know what?
00:14:38.639 --> 00:14:44.159
I crack my Alani open, I dress in the cutest little gym fit ever.
00:14:44.559 --> 00:14:50.000
I put a podcast in my ears, and I shut my brain off and I do it anyways.
00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:54.799
Question two, if I started, would I probably feel better?
00:14:55.600 --> 00:14:57.759
Sometimes you know the answer is yes.
00:14:58.240 --> 00:15:00.639
You don't need motivation, you need action.
00:15:01.440 --> 00:15:03.759
You need to start moving.
00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:08.159
Question three, am I modifying the plan or abandoning the plan?
00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:09.360
Ooh, this is huge.
00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:18.080
Maybe today it's we're not doing all five of our exercises or all three of our sets.
00:15:18.159 --> 00:15:22.240
Maybe it's like, hey, let's do two sets of four exercises.
00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:28.399
Maybe instead of 10k steps, it's let's do like six to eight.
00:15:28.639 --> 00:15:30.159
Can we modify it a little bit?
00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:37.759
Maybe instead of cooking an elaborate dinner, we just throw together some rotisserie chicken and microwave rice or a sandwich.
00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:42.080
Shit, there are so many times that I'm like, I'm just gonna make a sandwich because that's all I have effort.
00:15:42.320 --> 00:15:44.960
That's all the energy that I have for today is just a sandwich.
00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:46.480
That has happened plenty of times.
00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:48.399
And hey, it is okay.
00:15:48.879 --> 00:15:50.559
That is an adjustment.
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:51.919
Adjustments are great.
00:15:52.080 --> 00:15:55.039
Rather than just saying, fuck it, I'll try again next week.
00:15:55.120 --> 00:15:57.120
That is abandonment and that will keep you stuck.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:02.399
Question four, is this an isolated day or is this a pattern?
00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:06.799
One missed workout because you needed rest isn't the issue.
00:16:06.960 --> 00:16:14.559
But if you've needed rest for every Monday for the last six weeks, something else is going on.
00:16:15.200 --> 00:16:19.840
Grace should help you continue moving forward, but it shouldn't become a loophole that keeps you stuck.
00:16:19.919 --> 00:16:22.559
It shouldn't keep you in the cycle of, oh, I need grace.
00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:23.519
Oh, I need rest.
00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:24.399
Oh, it's okay.
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:25.360
I'll try again later.
00:16:25.519 --> 00:16:30.240
Because if you just keep trying again later, we are never actually doing anything productive.
00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:31.759
And we need to stop that shit.
00:16:31.919 --> 00:16:38.799
Another thing to think about and something to keep in mind is you need to stop making every workout decision based on the outcome.
00:16:38.960 --> 00:16:43.919
We're not going into the gym saying, is this the workout that's gonna change my entire life?
00:16:44.159 --> 00:16:44.480
No.
00:16:44.639 --> 00:16:47.919
First of all, not one singular workout is going to change your life.
00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:51.039
It is the accumulation of all of them.
00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:55.279
They're like itty bitty little little bricks on an entire building.
00:16:55.360 --> 00:16:57.679
We are laying brick by brick.
00:16:57.919 --> 00:17:15.440
And if you put so much into one workout and we say, oh, I don't want to do that one workout if it's not going to be my best foot forward, then you're just making it so much harder for yourself to actually show up.
00:17:16.319 --> 00:17:17.519
Can we just get there?
00:17:17.759 --> 00:17:19.279
Can we just move our bodies?
00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:21.359
Can we just get some blood flowing?
00:17:21.839 --> 00:17:23.839
Can we just lift some weights?
00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:26.720
It's not that big of a deal.
00:17:26.960 --> 00:17:34.240
There shouldn't be so much pressure on one singular workout because it doesn't come down to one workout.
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:39.200
It comes down to what you repeat and what you do frequently and often.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:47.839
So a really big thing that you need to take away from this episode is that grace needs to be paired with honesty.
00:17:48.240 --> 00:17:56.240
Learning to give yourself grace when there is something genuinely going on, but then also being honest about am I avoiding something?
00:17:56.559 --> 00:18:01.440
Because I've actually I did a little coaching intensive last week.
00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:20.960
And one of the biggest takeaways I had from it was that human beings make decisions from one of two places, either to move toward a desire, toward a goal, or away from discomfort.
00:18:21.279 --> 00:18:28.799
And when you look at, okay, am I doing something to avoid the discomfort?
00:18:29.039 --> 00:18:37.279
That is a really big flag as to whether or not you need to be brutally honest with yourself and show up, anyways.
00:18:37.519 --> 00:18:40.799
So this isn't about lowering your standards.
00:18:41.359 --> 00:18:49.519
You just need to stop believing that the only two options are meeting your standards perfectly or not at all.
00:18:49.759 --> 00:18:57.599
There is a happy medium, and we need to learn how to oscillate between both of them, right in the middle, the happy medium.
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:03.599
Because sometimes discipline looks like doing the full workout when you don't feel like it.
00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:09.599
But also, sometimes discipline means adapting the plan and we're doing 30 minutes instead of 60.
00:19:09.839 --> 00:19:15.680
Sometimes discipline also looks like going to fucking bed because we also need to know when our body needs rest.
00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:26.880
And maturity is knowing which one you actually need and asking instead, what can I reasonably do with what I have available today?
00:19:27.119 --> 00:19:35.519
That question will help you determine whether you need to give yourself grace or whether you're just being a little bit of a bitch.
00:19:35.759 --> 00:19:38.079
Again, said with so much love.
00:19:38.319 --> 00:19:40.799
But that is going to be it for today's episode.
00:19:40.880 --> 00:19:42.079
I hope this was helpful.
00:19:42.319 --> 00:19:44.240
I hope this gave you some insight.
00:19:44.559 --> 00:19:47.440
And I will chat with you in the next one.
00:19:47.759 --> 00:19:48.079
Bye.
00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:05.519
Maturing in your fitness journey is realizing that rest is also productive.
00:00:05.759 --> 00:00:07.360
Welcome back to the Embodiment Lab.
00:00:07.519 --> 00:00:08.560
My name is Addy.
00:00:08.720 --> 00:00:19.280
And in today's episode, I actually want to talk about something that has come up over and over and over again in client check-ins just this week and last week alone.
00:00:19.519 --> 00:00:24.239
And this is something that my clients struggle with pretty regularly.
00:00:24.480 --> 00:00:34.000
And I haven't actually, I don't think, talked about it, but it's definitely something that I talk about inside my program and with my clients on a basically weekly basis.
00:00:34.479 --> 00:00:43.359
And that is basically giving yourself grace, how to know when to take it easy versus when you're being a bitch, right?
00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:56.640
I work with a lot of very high achieving women who they don't need to be told majority of the time, hey, we need to pick it up.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:00:57.759
We're slacking.
00:00:58.159 --> 00:01:01.600
My clients come in and they kick ass.
00:01:01.840 --> 00:01:03.600
They hit the ground running.
00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:05.359
They check every box.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:11.359
They do everything that I tell them to do, sometimes even more, which is amazing.
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:12.560
So, so good.
00:01:12.719 --> 00:01:28.000
These women usually have backgrounds as like athletes, being very successful, you know, and they're used to the drive, they're used to the push, they're used to exhaustion.
00:01:28.400 --> 00:01:29.840
They're used to pushing themselves.
00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:30.959
They know how to.
00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:35.439
They're not a stranger to work ethic and working really, really hard.
00:01:35.760 --> 00:01:37.280
And that's a wonderful, wonderful thing.
00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:41.920
And it's gotten them so far in their lives and in their fitness journeys.
00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:45.920
However, sometimes that becomes the bottleneck.
00:01:46.000 --> 00:02:05.120
Sometimes that becomes the point where it is actually hindering us from being able to push ourselves past a certain point in our fitness journey, helping us to break out of a plateau, helping us to drive more progress and continue to see more progress.
00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:10.159
So we're going to talk about where that line is today because there's definitely a fine line.
00:02:10.319 --> 00:02:14.080
And we want to make sure that we're not, you know, walking on it like a little type rope.
00:02:14.240 --> 00:02:19.360
But we're actually very clear as to okay, when does my body actually need rest?
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:22.560
And when do I actually need to give myself grace?
00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:26.080
And when do I realistically need to push myself?
00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:38.080
A really common thing that I see in my clients and in different women that I talk to is them constantly feeling like they need to be in motion always.
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:43.599
And if they are not at the gym, they feel like they are falling behind.
00:02:43.759 --> 00:02:54.479
Or if they miss a workout, they feel like they're failing, or they feel like they're wasting their time, or they just feel like they constantly need to be doing something.
00:02:54.719 --> 00:02:58.479
Sometimes they feel that what they're doing is not enough.
00:02:58.639 --> 00:03:01.759
And so that makes them think that they need to push more.
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:23.520
When some of my clients are dealing with maybe exhaustion from crazy work lives, busy social schedules moving across several states, dealing with injury, dealing with illness, dealing with just dealing with normal things that we deal with as humans.
00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:32.400
A lot of the times people will think that, you know, even though they're sick, that, oh, I'll just go to the gym anyways.
00:03:32.479 --> 00:03:34.479
Even like if it's not contagious, right?
00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:40.159
Like dealing with whatever whatever situation is going on health-wise.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:42.719
Sometimes people are like, oh, I'll just push past that.
00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:46.080
I'll just push because you're used to pushing.
00:03:47.039 --> 00:03:55.439
And a lot of the times that means that we're not able to actually feel decent during your workout.
00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:13.520
This is putting more stress on your body when your body really just needs time to recover, whether it's from that injury, whether it's from the illness, from even just like exhaustion, burnout, stress, anxiety, just life.
00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:18.959
Sometimes your body genuinely needs time and space.
00:04:19.439 --> 00:04:32.639
And you need to be okay with giving yourself that time and space, giving yourself grace, letting it be okay to rest, even if it's not necessarily planned.
00:04:32.879 --> 00:04:45.519
There's also on the flip side of that, we don't want to use every single feeling and emotion to determine whether or not we show up that day.
00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:47.600
So where is that line?
00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:50.319
When do you genuinely need rest?
00:04:50.800 --> 00:04:56.720
And when are you just uncomfortable and looking for permission to not do the thing?
00:04:56.959 --> 00:05:14.079
You don't need to choose between relentlessly pushing yourself and giving yourself endless grace, especially when that grace is just helping you to stay in the point of suffering or not feeling happy with yourself.
00:05:14.240 --> 00:05:28.000
That grace is not a vote for you to continue to stay in a place where you're unhappy with your body, but that grace needs to be used to help you determine whether or not your body genuinely needs a break.
00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:36.240
You need to learn how to adjust your effort to the season that you're in without fully abandoning yourself.
00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:41.519
This should never be a matter of do I show up for myself or do I not for today?
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:54.399
A very, very common thing that I hear is that if you feel that you can't give it your full 100% effort, then it's not worth it at all.
00:05:54.720 --> 00:06:02.720
And again, this is determined by okay, like is your body genuinely fighting something right now?
00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:06.319
Does your body genuinely need time to recover?
00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:11.120
Or are you just feeling a little bit stretched, a little bit tired?
00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:19.199
Maybe you're a little stressed, you're a little anxious, maybe you are experiencing some pre-period symptoms.
00:06:19.279 --> 00:06:23.360
I know that will hit me like a ton of bricks every single month.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:33.279
But I want you to understand that there's a spectrum of how much effort you are able to put in every single week.
00:06:33.519 --> 00:06:41.360
That doesn't mean that the only time that you see progress in your fitness journey is if you are showing up 100%.
00:06:42.079 --> 00:06:43.199
There's a spectrum.
00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:44.800
We'll just go by like 10.
00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:49.040
So, like 10, 20, 30%, all the way up to like 80, 90, 100%.
00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:52.800
In a perfect world, you're putting in 100% effort.
00:06:53.120 --> 00:07:04.639
But I need you to know that there is about 80% effort that you need to put in in order to actually drive results.
00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:05.519
80%.
00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:07.839
So there's some wiggle room.
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.600
There's some room for a cheat meal or two throughout the week.
00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:21.600
There's some room for lower effort workouts here and there, periodically, there's some room, just a little bit of wiggle room, right?
00:07:22.399 --> 00:07:26.639
But that doesn't mean that it's 80 to 100% or nothing.
00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:38.160
Because if you have a week where you don't feel that you can give 80 to 100%, that doesn't mean that you decide that you're gonna give 0%.
00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:49.040
What does your effort, your body, your brain, what does showing up look like on that week?
00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:52.160
Maybe it's 50 to 60 percent.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:56.879
If that is what you can handle, then we show up at 50 to 60%.
00:07:57.279 --> 00:08:00.959
We need to we need to actually figure out what that 50 to 60 percent looks like.
00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:23.360
Let's say, for example, your week, you show up five times a week to the gym and you hit your macros and your calories seven days out of seven days, maybe, and like that's your 100%, and you're getting in 10,000 steps and you're recovering two days out of the seven, right?
00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:25.120
Maybe that's your 100%.
00:08:25.600 --> 00:08:29.439
And this is just a very generic example, not like actual protocols.
00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:51.679
00:08:51.759 --> 00:08:54.799
And that's about what your 50% looks like.
00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:57.679
Then let's show up with that 50%.
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:09.440
Because what you have to realize is that you're not going backwards, you're not losing progress, you're not a failure unless you stop the thing entirely.
00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:16.000
An object in motion stays in motion unless acted on by an outside force.
00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:23.759
So, can we keep the object in motion, even if that means that the object is not moving up?
00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:28.639
I'm thinking of like gravity or the actual physical object.
00:09:28.799 --> 00:09:30.080
This is an example.
00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:33.679
I'm literally like an analogy, I'm literally pulling out of my butt right now.
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:44.480
But I'm kind of thinking, you know, the Olympic sport, the I think it's like the shuffle thing, where it's like you have the little ball kind of thing on, I think it's ice.
00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:45.519
I think.
00:09:45.679 --> 00:09:58.720
I don't know anything about this, but you like send it down the ice, and then you have like the other two people with the little brooms that are like sweeping back and forth to like control how it moves.
00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:00.480
I don't know why that's what my brain is thinking of.
00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:07.919
If you got what sport in the Olympics that I'm talking about from that very awful explanation, good job.
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:20.720
But that's kind of what I'm thinking of is if giving it 100% effort is like the guy sending the disc, the ball, the whatever that's called, down the ice, if it's even ice, I don't know.
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:24.879
If that's 100%, like that force leaving his hand.
00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:38.799
And let's just say, for example, even though this is not how the sport works, but let's just say that week after week of giving 100%, the hand is continuing to push the thing down the court, the ice, the whatever it is.
00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:50.320
And maybe the week where you feel a little bit of an injury coming on, or you feel a little bit of an illness coming on, or maybe work is just a little bit extra crazy this particular week and you feel exhausted.
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:53.440
Maybe your effort is about that 50% or 60%.
00:10:54.159 --> 00:10:58.000
Can we just let that thing just coast on the ice?
00:10:58.240 --> 00:10:59.360
Just coast.
00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:14.320
You saying that because you can't give 100% effort, so you're going to give 0% effort is the same as somebody taking one of the sticks, the little broom.
00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:23.279
And instead of like doing a little thing in front of the little ball, like where they're shuffling, you're just taking that stick and stopping the ball.
00:11:23.440 --> 00:11:26.799
That's what you're doing when you say, Oh, I'll just give 0%.
00:11:27.360 --> 00:11:29.519
You want to keep that object in motion.
00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:31.440
You want to keep your momentum going.
00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:38.399
You want to keep moving in the right direction, even if it means that you're not giving it full speed ahead.
00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:41.840
That was such a wonky explanation.
00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:46.639
But hopefully, my brain, um, hopefully you can see what was happening in my brain.
00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:54.080
But basically, like, why on earth would you just like fully stop when you can just maybe coast and just maintain what you can?
00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:56.559
Because maintaining is also a good thing.
00:11:56.720 --> 00:12:00.240
Not every single week in your fitness journey is going to look like full speed ahead.
00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:01.039
And that's okay.
00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:04.159
That's actually very normal because that's kind of just how life goes.
00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:08.159
It ebbs, it flows, it coasts, but we don't want to go backwards.
00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:11.200
And the only way that we would go backwards is if we stop.
00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:15.039
Adapting, adjusting the plan, doing all these things.
00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:16.879
That's not stopping, that's adapting.
00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:17.919
That's continuing.
00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:19.200
Whoa, English?
00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:20.240
That's hard.
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:23.279
That's continuing to keep the object in motion.
00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:30.480
So consistency is actually your ability to keep showing up when 100% isn't available.
00:12:30.799 --> 00:12:39.840
That is where long-term results are built, because that is when you are actually building longevity, sustainability, all of these things.
00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:45.919
And that is what helps you to actually maintain the habits that you're doing for the rest of your life.
00:12:46.080 --> 00:13:02.159
So when you have whatever situation where you are trying to determine, hey, whether you should give yourself grace or whether you're being a bitch, determine what your capacity is on that specific day and show up at that capacity.
00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:09.039
So if you wake up and your capacity is 40%, how can you show up 100% of that 40%?
00:13:09.600 --> 00:13:11.840
And that doesn't mean that your commitment changed.
00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:16.399
That just meant that you are adapting to what you can give.
00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:20.240
If you're sick, your capacity is legitimately lower.
00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:23.200
You slept four hours, your capacity is lower.
00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:26.080
You're going through something emotionally devastating.
00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:27.600
Again, lower.
00:13:27.759 --> 00:13:30.320
Your job is unusually demanding that week.
00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:31.120
Lower.
00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:35.200
You simply don't feel like training because you're tired after work.
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:38.879
That, my friend, might just be discomfort.
00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:42.559
That is not necessarily a situation where you need to give yourself grace.
00:13:42.879 --> 00:13:50.480
That's when you're being, to say it so nicely and with so much love in the world, that's when you're being a little bit of a bitch, right?
00:13:50.960 --> 00:13:56.159
So the goal isn't how do I force myself to operate at 100% every day?
00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:03.600
It's given what I actually have available today, what does showing up actually look like for today?
00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:10.240
So here's a couple of things to think about to determine whether you need grace or if you're avoiding discomfort.
00:14:10.559 --> 00:14:14.799
One, is there an actual reason that my capacity is lower?
00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:16.159
Or is it just a feeling?
00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:18.240
Do I just not feel like doing it?
00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:23.759
Because not wanting to do something is not necessarily a reason not to.
00:14:23.919 --> 00:14:31.120
There's a difference between my body genuinely needs recovery and my couch sounds a lot better than squats right now.
00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:37.840
Trust me, there's a lot of days that I'm like, man, I would love to just go rot on the couch and not go to the gym.
00:14:37.919 --> 00:14:38.480
But you know what?
00:14:38.639 --> 00:14:44.159
I crack my Alani open, I dress in the cutest little gym fit ever.
00:14:44.559 --> 00:14:50.000
I put a podcast in my ears, and I shut my brain off and I do it anyways.
00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:54.799
Question two, if I started, would I probably feel better?
00:14:55.600 --> 00:14:57.759
Sometimes you know the answer is yes.
00:14:58.240 --> 00:15:00.639
You don't need motivation, you need action.
00:15:01.440 --> 00:15:03.759
You need to start moving.
00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:08.159
Question three, am I modifying the plan or abandoning the plan?
00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:09.360
Ooh, this is huge.
00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:18.080
Maybe today it's we're not doing all five of our exercises or all three of our sets.
00:15:18.159 --> 00:15:22.240
Maybe it's like, hey, let's do two sets of four exercises.
00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:28.399
Maybe instead of 10k steps, it's let's do like six to eight.
00:15:28.639 --> 00:15:30.159
Can we modify it a little bit?
00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:37.759
Maybe instead of cooking an elaborate dinner, we just throw together some rotisserie chicken and microwave rice or a sandwich.
00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:42.080
Shit, there are so many times that I'm like, I'm just gonna make a sandwich because that's all I have effort.
00:15:42.320 --> 00:15:44.960
That's all the energy that I have for today is just a sandwich.
00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:46.480
That has happened plenty of times.
00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:48.399
And hey, it is okay.
00:15:48.879 --> 00:15:50.559
That is an adjustment.
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:51.919
Adjustments are great.
00:15:52.080 --> 00:15:55.039
Rather than just saying, fuck it, I'll try again next week.
00:15:55.120 --> 00:15:57.120
That is abandonment and that will keep you stuck.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:02.399
Question four, is this an isolated day or is this a pattern?
00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:06.799
One missed workout because you needed rest isn't the issue.
00:16:06.960 --> 00:16:14.559
But if you've needed rest for every Monday for the last six weeks, something else is going on.
00:16:15.200 --> 00:16:19.840
Grace should help you continue moving forward, but it shouldn't become a loophole that keeps you stuck.
00:16:19.919 --> 00:16:22.559
It shouldn't keep you in the cycle of, oh, I need grace.
00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:23.519
Oh, I need rest.
00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:24.399
Oh, it's okay.
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:25.360
I'll try again later.
00:16:25.519 --> 00:16:30.240
Because if you just keep trying again later, we are never actually doing anything productive.
00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:31.759
And we need to stop that shit.
00:16:31.919 --> 00:16:38.799
Another thing to think about and something to keep in mind is you need to stop making every workout decision based on the outcome.
00:16:38.960 --> 00:16:43.919
We're not going into the gym saying, is this the workout that's gonna change my entire life?
00:16:44.159 --> 00:16:44.480
No.
00:16:44.639 --> 00:16:47.919
First of all, not one singular workout is going to change your life.
00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:51.039
It is the accumulation of all of them.
00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:55.279
They're like itty bitty little little bricks on an entire building.
00:16:55.360 --> 00:16:57.679
We are laying brick by brick.
00:16:57.919 --> 00:17:15.440
And if you put so much into one workout and we say, oh, I don't want to do that one workout if it's not going to be my best foot forward, then you're just making it so much harder for yourself to actually show up.
00:17:16.319 --> 00:17:17.519
Can we just get there?
00:17:17.759 --> 00:17:19.279
Can we just move our bodies?
00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:21.359
Can we just get some blood flowing?
00:17:21.839 --> 00:17:23.839
Can we just lift some weights?
00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:26.720
It's not that big of a deal.
00:17:26.960 --> 00:17:34.240
There shouldn't be so much pressure on one singular workout because it doesn't come down to one workout.
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:39.200
It comes down to what you repeat and what you do frequently and often.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:47.839
So a really big thing that you need to take away from this episode is that grace needs to be paired with honesty.
00:17:48.240 --> 00:17:56.240
Learning to give yourself grace when there is something genuinely going on, but then also being honest about am I avoiding something?
00:17:56.559 --> 00:18:01.440
Because I've actually I did a little coaching intensive last week.
00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:20.960
And one of the biggest takeaways I had from it was that human beings make decisions from one of two places, either to move toward a desire, toward a goal, or away from discomfort.
00:18:21.279 --> 00:18:28.799
And when you look at, okay, am I doing something to avoid the discomfort?
00:18:29.039 --> 00:18:37.279
That is a really big flag as to whether or not you need to be brutally honest with yourself and show up, anyways.
00:18:37.519 --> 00:18:40.799
So this isn't about lowering your standards.
00:18:41.359 --> 00:18:49.519
You just need to stop believing that the only two options are meeting your standards perfectly or not at all.
00:18:49.759 --> 00:18:57.599
There is a happy medium, and we need to learn how to oscillate between both of them, right in the middle, the happy medium.
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:03.599
Because sometimes discipline looks like doing the full workout when you don't feel like it.
00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:09.599
But also, sometimes discipline means adapting the plan and we're doing 30 minutes instead of 60.
00:19:09.839 --> 00:19:15.680
Sometimes discipline also looks like going to fucking bed because we also need to know when our body needs rest.
00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:26.880
And maturity is knowing which one you actually need and asking instead, what can I reasonably do with what I have available today?
00:19:27.119 --> 00:19:35.519
That question will help you determine whether you need to give yourself grace or whether you're just being a little bit of a bitch.
00:19:35.759 --> 00:19:38.079
Again, said with so much love.
00:19:38.319 --> 00:19:40.799
But that is going to be it for today's episode.
00:19:40.880 --> 00:19:42.079
I hope this was helpful.
00:19:42.319 --> 00:19:44.240
I hope this gave you some insight.
00:19:44.559 --> 00:19:47.440
And I will chat with you in the next one.
00:19:47.759 --> 00:19:48.079
Bye.
