ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Originally released October 19th, 2022, this classic Series 3 episode of The DOD45 Show is back from the archives as part of our massive re-release campaign — because Spotify decided to pull the rug out from under us and terminate our original account. Their loss. Your second chance to catch (or relive) the madness.
During Series 3, we had nearly locked into our signature format and pacing. Major strides had been made since Series 2, but we were still a few wild leaps away from the tightly-wound chaos you see now, post-Series 7. Watching these episodes is seeing a work in progress that already had a hell of a lot to offer.
In this special Halloween-style episode, Tai and Adrienne sat down with none other than Howard Berger — Academy Award and Emmy-winning makeup effects master from the legendary KNB EFX Group — to talk about his debut book Masters of Make-up Effects and a lifetime of unforgettable work behind the scenes of Hollywood's greatest films.
While Tai drew a custom rendition of The Creature from the Black Lagoon for Howard, the conversation went deep into the art, the history, and the weirdness of Hollywood practical effects.
Some of what went down:
Howard’s stories about working on Quentin Tarantino films and inventing his now-famous low-light blood formula, known on sets as “Tarantino Blood”
Getting hilariously roasted by Don Rickles on the set of Casino
What winning an Oscar really does (or doesn’t do) for your career
Why Hi-Definition digital filmmaking has, in Howard's words, “ruined movies”
Tales from The Walking Dead, Kill Bill, Evil Dead II, From Dusk Till Dawn, and way more
Behind-the-scenes grit, genius, and absurdities of the makeup effects world

Did You Know About Howard Berger:
Howard is a co-founder of KNB EFX Group, responsible for the makeup effects on hundreds of films including The Chronicles of Narnia (which won him the Oscar) and countless cult classics.
His practical gore work is so respected that directors like Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and Sam Raimi have requested him by name.
He credits his early passion to watching monster movies and sneaking onto film sets as a teenager.
Despite winning top awards, Berger stays fiercely loyal to the old-school art of practical effects over CGI.
