00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:03.600
Long before your hand closes, your heart usually dies.
00:00:04.480 --> 00:00:07.599
I'm Pastor Jason Market, and this is the Dirt Pass from the Podcast.
00:01:13.920 --> 00:01:15.680
Welcome back to the Dirt Pastorin Podcast.
00:01:15.760 --> 00:01:20.000
I'm Pastor Jason Martin, aka the Dirt Path Pastor, and I am so glad you're listening.
00:01:20.159 --> 00:01:25.680
And this sermon is one where I almost made David's mac and cheese cold.
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:32.959
He was making David was pitching for his his wife, who's been sick this week, and making mac and cheese, and so I almost made it cold.
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:42.079
Um and during this Sunday, I looked up at the clock and it w before I got started with the sermon, and I saw that it was 15 minutes until noon.
00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:44.719
I thought, I still got a little time.
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:48.480
And the next time I looked up, it was like it was 20 minutes over.
00:01:48.719 --> 00:01:53.840
So somewhere in the back of mine, I just kept thinking, I hope David's Macintosh survives it.
00:01:54.640 --> 00:01:58.560
And sometimes the sermon just takes on a life of its own, and this was one of those weeks.
00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:02.959
As I prepared this message, I kept coming back to one question.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:08.960
How do you keep your heart open in a world that keeps giving you reasons to close it?
00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:13.599
If you've ever lived, or if you've lived for very long, you've been hurt.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:18.080
You've helped people who disappointed you, you've trusted people who've let you down.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:23.759
If we're not careful, those experiences don't just close our hands, they close our hearts.
00:02:31.599 --> 00:02:42.400
So whether you're listening on your morning commute, sitting on your back porch with a cup of coffee, winding down after a long day, my prayer is that God would remind you just how generously he has loved you.
00:02:42.639 --> 00:02:47.759
And that his love would keep your heart open in a world that often tells us to shut it.
00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:52.639
So grab your Bible if you've got one, and let's head down the dirt path together.
00:02:57.599 --> 00:03:02.319
Well, we're gonna we're gonna be in the book of Deuteronomy today, Deuteronomy chapter 15.
00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:14.240
Um, and as you're turning there, I was uh I was reading again in this magazine called Nazareth Compassionate Ministries, and actually I put an order form out there if you're interested in reading it, springs filled out, and they'll send you a free one in the mail.
00:03:14.400 --> 00:03:19.919
It just tells you different stories of what the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries are doing around the world.
00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:25.439
Um while it's written this week, I came across a story about a man named Julius.
00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:37.039
And Julius lives in the Philippines and serves in one of our Nazarene churches or facilities over there, and but he wasn't always known as Julius.
00:03:38.240 --> 00:03:45.520
Matter of fact, and when he was named from birth, his name was, and I'm gonna probably say this wrong, but his name was Chukoi.
00:03:46.479 --> 00:03:48.080
That was his name.
00:03:49.199 --> 00:03:53.199
And he grew up in a home that was kind of the opposite of peaceful.
00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:58.159
I'm not gonna go into a lot of details, but you could probably picture what kind of home I'm talking about.
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:02.800
And I think dysfunctional would be a kind way to say it.
00:04:04.159 --> 00:04:10.000
But by the time he was 11, he began looking for anywhere else that he could live.
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:15.599
First, his friends became his escape.
00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:19.439
He would sneak out of the house and go hang out with his friends.
00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:23.279
But after that, then it became cigarettes.
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:26.000
Then it became alcohol.
00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:32.800
Then nights wandering the streets until eventually the streets become streets became his home.
00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:40.160
But one day, Chacoy started going to a place just to get some food.
00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:51.600
He was living out behind a restaurant eating out their trash food, but he worked about this place that fed people for free, and it just so happened it was a Nazarene facility that fed teens and kids.
00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:55.040
So he starts going, and he's just there for the free food.
00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:56.720
That's all that's all he's there for.
00:05:00.639 --> 00:05:04.399
But one of the leaders kept inviting him to go to camp.
00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:08.879
And every time the leader invited him, he would say, No, that leader was persistent.
00:05:08.959 --> 00:05:09.279
Right?
00:05:09.360 --> 00:05:10.959
He's just there for the food.
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:15.199
But finally, just to get that youth leader to be quiet, he's like, okay, I'll go.
00:05:19.120 --> 00:05:25.279
And as at that camp when he was listening to people pray, you know how some of our kids would shared that.
00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:28.800
Their big thing, the thing they learned from camp was you don't have to be quiet for you to pray.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:30.560
You can pray out loud.
00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:32.800
He heard people praying like that.
00:05:35.519 --> 00:05:41.920
And then he started asking questions, and as he began to ask those questions, something inside Jakoy had shifted.
00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:44.959
That's that something was he encountered Jesus.
00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:50.800
And so he ends up making a decision to follow Jesus and give his life to Jesus.
00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:59.439
And when that happens, he in that moment, right in there, he said, Not only am I going to get to start a new life with Jesus, I am going to bury the old me now.
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:05.279
And by that he meant I am no longer gonna go by the name Traquid, because that name no longer has any value to me.
00:06:05.519 --> 00:06:07.120
I'm gonna go by Julius.
00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:17.920
And now Julius is not only is he saved, but he's actually serving the people that are living on the very same streets that God rescued him from.
00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:21.040
It's an amazing story, isn't it?
00:06:21.279 --> 00:06:23.199
It's incredible, it's powerful.
00:06:23.519 --> 00:06:29.120
But as I was reading his story, and yeah, the story moved because there was one sentence though that stopped me.
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:32.399
In that sentence, this is what it said.
00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:37.199
It said they were parts of his story he hesitated to share.
00:06:37.519 --> 00:06:43.199
Not because they were untrue, but because of the fear of judgment.
00:06:45.120 --> 00:07:01.759
So he was going to this church to get food, just full of free food, and people were investing in, loving him, trying to get to know him, and he was afraid to share his life, to share who he was, what he was going through with those people, because of how they might look at him, what they might think about him.
00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:05.759
That broke my heart.
00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:26.879
But I think I think it's sad with me because I think we all understand what Julius meant when he says that.
00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:27.360
Right?
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:28.639
What will people think of me?
00:07:28.720 --> 00:07:30.160
We all think about that.
00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:40.000
Maybe he's thinking, you know, we all think, okay, if they really know who I am, they really know what I've done, will they still keep helping me?
00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:42.240
Will they still care about me the same way?
00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:49.759
And the reason why we ask that is we've been on the other side of that sometimes, right?
00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:55.040
Where we've all helped somebody, right?
00:07:55.120 --> 00:08:00.720
We've done nice things for them, but they disappointed us that we were generous and they they wasted our generosity.
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:07.920
Because we've had experiences like that in life, our hearts have kind of grown cold and callous.
00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:14.079
So sometimes we tend to look at people that are injoying the situation with this judgmental attitude.
00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:21.040
Because that's what we've experienced, and that's what has happened for life experiences.
00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:28.720
And I believe that's what Moses is addressing in Deuteronomy chapter 15.
00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:29.600
That's what we're gonna look at.
00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:31.920
I'm gonna get I'm gonna try and go as quickly as I can.
00:08:32.080 --> 00:08:32.399
Okay.
00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:37.840
Um Deuteronomy chapter 15, I'm reading verses 7 through 11.
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:51.200
He says, Now, if there are some poor among you, say one of your fellow Israelites and one of your cities in the land that the Lord your God has given you, don't be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your poor fellow Israelites.
00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:56.240
To the contrary, open your hand wide to them.
00:08:56.720 --> 00:08:59.919
You must generously lend them whatever they need.
00:09:00.399 --> 00:09:02.000
But watch yourself.
00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:10.399
Make sure no wicked thought crosses your mind, such as the seventh year, you know, that year of debt cancellation.
00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:14.879
So that you resent your poor fellow Israelites and don't give them anything.
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:21.600
If you do that, they will cry out to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:25.679
No, give generously to needy persons.
00:09:25.919 --> 00:09:32.720
Don't resent giving to them because it is the very thing that will lead to the Lord your God's blessing you and all you do work at.
00:09:33.759 --> 00:09:36.799
Poor persons will never disappear from the earth.
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:39.200
That's why I'm giving you this command.
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:46.879
You must open your hand generously to your fellow Israelites, to the needy among you, and to the poor who will live with you in your land.
00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:49.440
This is the word of God for the people of God.
00:09:49.840 --> 00:09:51.120
Thanks be to God.
00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:55.120
Alright, so Deuteronomy, this is Moses' farewell address.
00:09:55.200 --> 00:09:59.919
This is his last speech, last sermon before he and the people are gonna separate.
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:00.799
Right?
00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:03.360
And at this point, God's chosen people of Israelites.
00:10:03.440 --> 00:10:07.279
They are, you know, they're essentially twelve tribes wandering through the desert.
00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:11.279
But now they're on the reek of going into the promised land.
00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:18.720
And it's a new generation that's gonna be entering the promised land because all the other ones that were stubborn and fearful had already died off.
00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:24.639
So Moses is giving them, he's teaching them who they have to be, to be God's people in the promised land.
00:10:26.399 --> 00:10:29.360
Now, this is very important today.
00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:34.240
You all come tell me in our news, you're like, oh, we're gonna go to church and Pastor Jason's gonna talk about money.
00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:37.039
This this is not that sermon.
00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:38.720
Okay, this is not a sermon about tithing.
00:10:38.799 --> 00:10:41.120
Moses' words here is not about tithing.
00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:48.159
Tithing is important, but the sermon is not a tithing sermon.
00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:52.399
And you can ask the people here, I've only preached one of those since I've been here for four years.
00:10:54.320 --> 00:11:01.200
Now, in the sermon, it's not about increasing the church budget because money is not the core issue being discussed in these verses.
00:11:01.360 --> 00:11:07.600
The core issue is it's more about what do God's redeemed people look like.
00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:10.559
And so that's the kind of what Moses is addressing here.
00:11:10.639 --> 00:11:12.000
So we look at verse 7.
00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:23.360
It says if it says, if there are some poor persons, notice Moses isn't saying that there might be poor persons, or that they're they're, you know, how do I word it?
00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:28.799
He's he doesn't word it in a way that make it sound like the poor person is the problem, or that poor people don't exist.
00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:34.960
He's not ignoring their existence, he's saying poor people are gonna be out there, they're going to exist.
00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:42.720
We live in a simple, broken world of simple, broken systems that's going to produce produce oppression, poverty, brokenness.
00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:47.039
And so there are going to be people in poverty out there.
00:11:50.960 --> 00:11:59.519
Then he goes on to say, if there are some four persons among you, you don't harden your heart or be tight-fisted.
00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:02.639
That phrase harden your heart.
00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:04.720
We've heard this before in Moses' story, right?
00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:09.440
Remember, Moses goes to Pharaoh, and Pharaoh you know, he tells Pharaoh, let my people go.
00:12:11.759 --> 00:12:15.919
And Pharaoh doesn't do it, and he always says, Pharaoh, hardened his heart, right?
00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:21.039
Harden his heart, he blocked his heart, he strengthened his heart, he rebelled in his heart against God.
00:12:23.279 --> 00:12:30.720
So Moses is saying here is when you come across poor people, when they come to you, do not harden your heart against them.
00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:33.759
Don't do it.
00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:39.440
Not only that, he says, don't be tight in this meaning, don't have a closed hand.
00:12:41.440 --> 00:12:47.279
But notice before he mentions the closed hand, he first highlights the closed heart.
00:12:47.759 --> 00:12:51.120
He says, Don't harden your heart or close your hand.
00:12:53.600 --> 00:12:56.240
The closed heart leads to the closed hand.
00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:04.000
Going on in verse 8, Moses says, Open your hand wide.
00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:10.159
And I love the Hebrew here because the Hebrew word literally means open open your hands.
00:13:10.399 --> 00:13:11.440
Don't just go.
00:13:12.080 --> 00:13:14.639
It's I wanted to say jazz hands, right?
00:13:14.720 --> 00:13:15.600
I thought that'd be fun.
00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:21.039
But but again, this is not a barely open, it's not a reluctant open, right?
00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:24.960
It's not a okay, my hands are open, but I'm gonna complain about it the whole time.
00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:32.720
It's my hands are open, it's an emphatically and generously open.
00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:38.080
And Moses goes on to say, we're saying, open your hand wide to meet the need.
00:13:42.639 --> 00:13:48.559
Alright, so the next verse, it's it might be verse 9, it might be the most important because it says, watch yourself.
00:13:49.279 --> 00:13:55.840
Again, when we read that, we hear watch ourselves, we think we gotta watch ourselves because we've been burned before, we've been disappointed before.
00:13:56.159 --> 00:14:00.720
But Moses says, make sure no wicked thought crosses your mind.
00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:06.720
He's saying poverty is not the greatest danger that you're gonna run into.
00:14:06.799 --> 00:14:11.840
The greater dangers when you run into poverty is that your heart is going to be closed.
00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:15.600
That you're gonna look at that person and you're going to judge them.
00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:18.639
And you're not, you're gonna refuse to help them.
00:14:18.720 --> 00:14:20.480
Then he gives us an example of that.
00:14:20.799 --> 00:14:29.120
See, the Jews had this practice of every, you know, after seven years, there's a seven-year period, and at the end of the seven-year period, all debts were canceled.
00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:31.360
That's why it's called the year of cancellation.
00:14:32.399 --> 00:14:37.039
And so what Moses is saying is don't think about the fact that it's year six, right?
00:14:37.279 --> 00:14:39.519
A week to go, it's about to give you your seventh.
00:14:39.600 --> 00:14:44.960
Don't think about the fact that if you give to them, that they're not gonna have to pay you back in five days, right?
00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:46.320
That you're not getting paid back.
00:14:46.399 --> 00:14:47.759
He's saying, don't think about that.
00:14:47.840 --> 00:14:50.799
Don't reject me because you're not getting anything in return.
00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:05.200
The issue he's talking about here is not ability, it's the fact that they stopped and calculated what it would cost them.
00:15:07.039 --> 00:15:11.279
They they weighed whether, okay, is this worth it for me or not worth it for me?
00:15:18.080 --> 00:15:21.679
See, God is opposed to transactional generosity.
00:15:22.159 --> 00:15:25.440
Because that's not generosity, that's a trade.
00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:31.919
God doesn't give give us things, God doesn't give anyone, anything, expecting anything in return.
00:15:32.480 --> 00:15:35.679
And his love causes people to do the same thing.
00:15:37.360 --> 00:15:42.159
So we move into verse 10, and it shares that Israelites should give freely without resentment.
00:15:43.840 --> 00:15:53.600
Now, you can read verse 10 and think, okay, Pastor Jason, if I put money in the offering plate, I'm gonna go get a linen lottery ticket, I'm gonna go play their slot machines next door and hit the jackpot, right?
00:15:53.679 --> 00:15:56.080
That's I'm getting I gained, so God should bless me.
00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:57.519
This is not that verse.
00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:03.360
This is not a prosperity gospel because if that's the case, if we give to get God's blessing, what are we doing?
00:16:03.440 --> 00:16:05.600
We're trying to give to get something.
00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:10.320
That's not what this verse is saying.
00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:18.240
It means God's favor will be on that person who gives because they want to give.
00:16:18.399 --> 00:16:19.919
They give because they love.
00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:23.600
All right, let me go to verse 11.
00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:25.840
And actually, verse 11, you've probably heard it before.
00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:29.679
If you've read through the gospels, you know Jesus says the cord will always be among you.
00:16:29.840 --> 00:16:30.159
Right?
00:16:30.480 --> 00:16:36.639
And he says that to Judas, who objects to the fact that this woman pours out the expensive perfume on his feet.
00:16:43.120 --> 00:17:00.639
So what Jesus is saying, as long as sin endures, as long as Jesus tarries, there's going to be these broken sinful systems in phrase where people are going to be oppressed, people are going to make poor decisions, people are going to be living in chains, whether they're created by themselves or created by other people, people are going to be living in slavery to poverty.
00:17:00.879 --> 00:17:03.679
It's always going to be there until Jesus comes back.
00:17:06.319 --> 00:17:13.039
But what this verse 11 is saying is the existence of poverty is not permission for us to be indifferent.
00:17:15.920 --> 00:17:20.000
In fact, poverty is the reason God's people must never stop being generous.
00:17:21.920 --> 00:17:26.319
God's command to his people is always open your hand.
00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:33.920
So again, remember, this verse, these verses are not, it's about we're not talking about this idea of the open hand.
00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:36.000
We're talking about the key to having the open hand.
00:17:36.240 --> 00:17:37.359
That's really what we're getting after.
00:17:37.519 --> 00:17:38.960
I don't know if I said that in the beginning or not.
00:17:39.039 --> 00:17:40.960
I'm going fast, so my brain is ping ponging.
00:17:41.039 --> 00:17:46.880
Like I didn't have any coffee or anything to make me focus this morning, so now my brain's like a yesterday tasting a ping pong ball.
00:17:47.440 --> 00:17:53.759
Um but the key in these verses is the heart, right?
00:17:53.839 --> 00:17:56.720
Because God's people keep their hearts open.
00:17:57.279 --> 00:18:00.559
And we keep our hearts open because God has been generous to us.
00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:09.279
But here's the thing: what we do with our hands reveals our hearts.
00:18:10.079 --> 00:18:15.680
If our hand is closed, it indicates we have a closed heart.
00:18:21.839 --> 00:18:24.319
God's goal is not to make us generous people.
00:18:24.559 --> 00:18:25.680
We should be generous people.
00:18:25.920 --> 00:18:26.720
That's not God's aim.
00:18:26.799 --> 00:18:29.599
God's aim with us is to make us his holy people.
00:18:30.720 --> 00:18:33.680
And holy people have hearts that reflect God's word.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:38.559
So one or two things happens to us, right?
00:18:38.720 --> 00:18:40.400
First, we become cynical.
00:18:40.640 --> 00:18:49.599
We become cynical because while we gave to somebody, and then they wasted it or they did something with it that we didn't like or didn't expect them to do.
00:18:49.839 --> 00:18:52.559
That we have that blessing box out in front of our college problem, right?
00:18:52.720 --> 00:18:56.799
Sometimes early on, I would get frustrated because somebody would come in and just clean the whole box out.
00:18:57.119 --> 00:18:59.680
Not thinking about other people needing it too.
00:19:02.240 --> 00:19:06.240
I changed my mind real quick as I talked to somebody who showed him right along already cleared out.
00:19:06.400 --> 00:19:06.960
You know what he was doing?
00:19:07.039 --> 00:19:10.319
He was clearing it out, taking it for people who couldn't get in the box.
00:19:22.720 --> 00:19:25.839
And so over time we stop trying to see those who need help.
00:19:26.079 --> 00:19:29.440
We ask, before we give her gettings, can we trust them?
00:19:32.079 --> 00:19:34.480
Or sometimes we can even get cynical because you know what?
00:19:34.559 --> 00:19:36.799
I was in their shoes once, and no one helped me.
00:19:39.200 --> 00:19:41.359
We can develop a cynical attitude like that.
00:19:45.440 --> 00:19:47.680
And you're wrong, someone did help you.
00:19:47.759 --> 00:19:48.960
His name is Jesus.
00:19:50.319 --> 00:19:51.839
You just didn't know it.
00:19:52.799 --> 00:19:55.680
Now, Moses, he warns against this idea of becoming cynical.
00:19:56.160 --> 00:20:03.920
He goes so far as to say, if you don't, if you ignore this, if you don't give, then you are sinning against God.
00:20:15.599 --> 00:20:16.720
He warns against us.
00:20:16.799 --> 00:20:20.240
He warns us to not let our people experience become a hardness of heart.
00:20:20.559 --> 00:20:21.680
He warns us to protect them.
00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:23.440
He tells us you can protect your wisdom.
00:20:23.519 --> 00:20:25.359
Yes, we have to dig things through, right?
00:20:26.160 --> 00:20:31.119
Sometimes giving someone money isn't always the best option, but we we can't give we can't give them money, right?
00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:33.599
Like money is not the right option that we can give them.
00:20:34.559 --> 00:20:35.039
Love.
00:20:35.440 --> 00:20:38.160
We can give them human dictators, we can give them respect.
00:20:45.359 --> 00:20:50.799
So Moses wants to protect your wisdom, but in the process of that, don't give up being compassion.
00:20:53.440 --> 00:20:55.519
Our wisdom is governed by love.
00:20:57.119 --> 00:20:58.640
The second thing we tend to do, right?
00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:02.960
We're just becoming second is we can't we can give, but with an impure heart.
00:21:03.519 --> 00:21:04.880
So maybe you can fool you.
00:21:04.960 --> 00:21:16.720
Sometimes you can fool people by opening your hand and making it look like you're generous, but in reality, you're not generous because your hand may look open on the outside, but really it's closed because you're open, only opening your hand because you're expecting someone to give you something.
00:21:19.279 --> 00:21:20.559
Very early on in my mission.
00:21:20.640 --> 00:21:23.920
I wouldn't say this now because this is not a thing a pastor should say.
00:21:24.400 --> 00:21:28.559
Very early, I had someone in the church tell me and say, Pastor Jason, I give the most money in this church out of any Bible.
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:30.880
So you should do it this way because I give the most money.
00:21:30.960 --> 00:21:33.039
And I looked and I said, You can keep your money, sir.
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:38.079
Then I left 18 months later.
00:21:42.079 --> 00:21:42.400
Why?
00:21:42.559 --> 00:21:44.720
Because he was giving, expecting to gain some.
00:21:44.960 --> 00:21:49.359
He was giving because he thought, if I give the most money, I should have the most influence in the church.
00:21:49.519 --> 00:21:52.240
If I give the most, and the church should do what I say.
00:21:54.319 --> 00:21:55.680
That's not true.
00:21:55.920 --> 00:21:58.079
Because that's not a gift to the church.
00:21:58.160 --> 00:21:59.759
That is you trying to use the church.
00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:02.240
For your own selfish purposes.
00:22:05.839 --> 00:22:07.599
That's a transaction.
00:22:07.920 --> 00:22:10.640
A transaction is not a gift.
00:22:13.519 --> 00:22:18.559
Yeah, we can give sometimes and make it look like our hands open, but it's really not because of a closed heart.
00:22:18.720 --> 00:22:22.160
And we can we can give up our time, we could give up our influence, our praise.
00:22:22.400 --> 00:22:28.160
But then if we're doing it for any other reason for the simply the sake of love, then you're doing it for the wrong reason.
00:22:34.160 --> 00:22:39.920
And sometimes, too, and along those same lines, we can give still give for the wrong reasons, but maybe it's not intentional.
00:22:42.240 --> 00:22:48.559
Like it's real easy to put food in the blessing box and walk away because we know somebody's gonna come along and get it.
00:22:49.039 --> 00:22:53.359
We don't ever have to meet those people, have a conversation with them, get to know their game oil story.
00:22:55.039 --> 00:22:55.680
That's good.
00:22:55.839 --> 00:22:58.400
It's important that we're feeding people, we're helping people.
00:23:01.599 --> 00:23:06.480
But if you were to run into that person at the blessing box, would you invite them to come sit with you on Sunday?
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:20.720
You can you can you can give food, you can give your money, you can give your time, but if they are not welcome in the presence of Jesus with you, then you're not giving with an open hand, you're giving with a closed hand because your heart's closed.
00:23:28.319 --> 00:23:30.640
That's what Moses is warning against.
00:23:30.799 --> 00:23:36.559
He's worrying, he's warning, that's because that's a judgmental attitude, whether we recognize it as judgmental or not.
00:23:36.720 --> 00:23:43.119
For some reason, we're either not seeing that person as a person worthy of dignity, or we see them as a person, but we say they're not worthy of it.
00:23:44.559 --> 00:23:46.559
Either way, it's wrong.
00:23:54.480 --> 00:23:56.240
Again, Moses warns us against this.
00:23:56.319 --> 00:23:59.200
He warns us to not give, expecting something in return.
00:23:59.279 --> 00:23:59.599
Why?
00:23:59.759 --> 00:24:01.759
Because this is what God has done for us.
00:24:01.920 --> 00:24:07.920
God has given to us not because we earned it, not because we deserved it, but because God loved us.
00:24:10.799 --> 00:24:14.480
While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
00:24:16.480 --> 00:24:23.519
You see, every one of us, we were spiritually poor, not even poor as not even a poor, we were spiritually bankrupt.
00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:31.839
We owed a debt because of our sin that we could never repay.
00:24:32.160 --> 00:24:37.119
But God not once sat down and recapitulated whether we were worth it or not.
00:24:39.599 --> 00:24:40.880
What did God do?
00:24:41.440 --> 00:24:44.720
What God did was he opened up his hand and he sent his son.
00:24:46.480 --> 00:24:54.319
He sent his son and gave his son up because God forgot so loved the world that he gave us one and only son, so that we should not perish but have everlasting life.
00:24:54.559 --> 00:24:59.119
I think I can find the KJB N I B and other translations all at once, and you get the point.
00:25:01.279 --> 00:25:05.519
God didn't do it because we were worthy of it, God did it because he loved us.
00:25:05.759 --> 00:25:07.759
When Jesus was on that cross, what did he do?
00:25:07.839 --> 00:25:10.319
He stretched out his hands to save us.
00:25:12.240 --> 00:25:16.480
He died on the cross to save people with a closed heart.
00:25:18.160 --> 00:25:19.920
And closed hands.
00:25:25.039 --> 00:25:27.440
And that's what the good news of the gospel is.
00:25:27.920 --> 00:25:34.799
It's that God doesn't simply forgive us, He transforms us from the inside out.
00:25:34.880 --> 00:25:39.599
He takes those of us who are closed-handed, closed-hearted, and what does he do?
00:25:39.680 --> 00:25:46.319
He takes out our closed heart that's made out of stone and rock, and he says, This heart's no good, so I'm gonna bring my whole my heart into you.
00:25:46.480 --> 00:25:50.480
I'm gonna bring a heart into you that's new, that's born of the spirit from above.
00:25:59.440 --> 00:26:10.079
So we he transforms this from people who are closed-hearted and closed-handed people, who because God loved us so much, we realize how much God loves us.
00:26:10.160 --> 00:26:22.480
The only thing that we have can hold or offer here, not because God demands it, not because God offered it, but because we genuinely love God is I'm gonna take everything that I have, everything who I am, and I'm going to give it to God for God's glory.
00:26:23.279 --> 00:26:33.920
Not because I'm coerced, not because I'm trying to win a popularity contest, not because I'm trying to go to the most influential person on Facebook, TikTok, or whatever it is.
00:26:34.880 --> 00:26:38.000
But because I genuinely love Jesus.
00:26:38.720 --> 00:26:42.000
Because I love Jesus, I love the people he created.
00:26:43.039 --> 00:26:51.359
No matter who they are or what they've done, no matter how poor or spiritually bankrupt they are, I'm going to love them.
00:26:54.880 --> 00:26:58.240
Not for who they could be, but for who they are right in that moment.
00:27:00.480 --> 00:27:06.480
Sometimes that's hard when you're sitting in a camp form with a kid that's very being very defiant and doesn't want to listen to you.
00:27:12.160 --> 00:27:14.400
Remember Julius from the beginning I talked about?
00:27:14.640 --> 00:27:16.079
Remember what Julius was afraid of?
00:27:16.160 --> 00:27:19.599
He said, I was afraid to share my story because people would judge me.
00:27:24.720 --> 00:27:26.799
He was afraid, he was terrified, he was pet.
00:27:27.839 --> 00:27:33.039
He kept quiet because he was scared of what closed hearts might do to him.
00:27:34.880 --> 00:27:36.240
Where was he at?
00:27:37.200 --> 00:27:38.960
He was in the church.
00:27:39.759 --> 00:27:44.000
He was in the church afraid that he was going to encounter closed hearts.
00:27:46.400 --> 00:27:49.759
Now, I don't know, I've never been to this church, I've never been to the Philippines.
00:27:50.000 --> 00:27:51.200
I've seen pictures.
00:27:51.839 --> 00:27:54.799
I can walk the streets of vanilla on Google Maps.
00:27:55.440 --> 00:27:56.319
That's not the same thing.
00:27:56.400 --> 00:27:59.359
I don't feel the breeze in my hair or smell the smells of the city.
00:28:08.480 --> 00:28:09.839
I get that fear.
00:28:12.000 --> 00:28:16.720
So he was afraid in God's house, in God's 15,000 people, they were gonna judge him.
00:28:16.799 --> 00:28:17.599
But you know what happens?
00:28:17.920 --> 00:28:21.680
Now again, experience talking about experience had him worried and concerned.
00:28:21.920 --> 00:28:27.200
It may have been that church, may have been a different church, maybe a different church person, but he encountered that somewhere he was afraid.
00:28:27.839 --> 00:28:32.240
But somewhere, someone began through the power of the Holy Spirit began to change his mind.
00:28:32.319 --> 00:28:33.599
And it was that one youth worker, right?
00:28:33.680 --> 00:28:36.160
That one youth worker who kept saying, Come to camp with me.
00:28:36.960 --> 00:28:40.559
Hey, that camp worker, he knew that kid was just there for the food.
00:28:41.359 --> 00:28:45.920
One of my running jokes is if you want to build a youth group, get a bunch of girls because the boys will show up.
00:28:50.720 --> 00:28:51.920
That was a joke, by the way.
00:28:52.000 --> 00:28:53.680
Hopefully that answer wasn't funny.
00:28:56.880 --> 00:28:59.359
Or you all smell David's mac and cheese and ready to go eat it.
00:29:00.000 --> 00:29:00.720
Anyway.
00:29:03.599 --> 00:29:06.000
But he that that youth leader kept on him, right?
00:29:06.160 --> 00:29:07.680
It kept inviting him.
00:29:08.799 --> 00:29:13.920
And rather than that youth leader get callous and be like, I've invited him a thousand times, I quit, I'm giving up.
00:29:14.000 --> 00:29:18.000
He just kept doing it until one day that kid goes to camp.
00:29:18.400 --> 00:29:21.279
And in an instance, his life has changed forever.
00:29:27.119 --> 00:29:33.200
Friends, there are people all around us carrying stories like Julius' story.
00:29:34.319 --> 00:29:38.480
Carrying stories of what poverty has forced them to encounter.
00:29:38.799 --> 00:29:44.160
Stories of addiction, of what addiction has done to their lives, to their families' lives.
00:29:46.319 --> 00:29:54.559
There are people living in family households that putting it saying they're dysfunctional is a right way to say what's going on.
00:30:19.759 --> 00:30:22.640
Because if your heart's closed, your hand will be closed.
00:30:29.359 --> 00:30:34.480
The only way to convince them that our hand is open is to have an open heart.
00:30:42.319 --> 00:30:49.039
I'll tell you some of the hardest moments I've had in ministry are people that have closed hands and closed hearts toward me.
00:30:51.279 --> 00:30:53.440
God said, Go minister to them anyway.
00:30:55.599 --> 00:31:03.039
They might be mad at me, they might be yelling at me, they didn't even crush me out, they may have posted meaning things about me in places, but God says go minister to them anyway.
00:31:07.279 --> 00:31:08.799
Be kind anyway.
00:31:10.559 --> 00:31:12.240
Be generous anyway.
00:31:13.039 --> 00:31:15.119
Don't close off your calendar to him.
00:31:15.440 --> 00:31:16.799
Open it up to him.
00:31:17.519 --> 00:31:18.400
Anyway.
00:31:28.799 --> 00:31:33.039
Yeah, they need the lot, but I I was that salesman, I keep calling you, I keep mailing you, I keep emailing.
00:31:33.200 --> 00:31:38.000
You gave me your contact, no matter how you did it, I would send a carry your pigeon if I figured out where your house works.
00:31:39.359 --> 00:31:41.359
I'm that same way though.
00:31:43.519 --> 00:31:49.119
Everybody in this room, whether I know you or not, Jesus loves you and I love you, and I'm gonna pray for you.
00:31:50.240 --> 00:31:51.759
Not am I just gonna pray for you?
00:31:51.839 --> 00:31:52.640
I'm gonna pray for y'all.
00:31:52.799 --> 00:31:59.119
Would you give me a moment where we can spend some time together and get to know each other so they can see that my heart's open and my hands open?
00:31:59.680 --> 00:32:02.000
Not because of me, but because of you.
00:32:02.160 --> 00:32:14.720
I want them to see your love and be transformed so they can realize that there's freedom and grace out there, that their story doesn't have to stay the same rope and story, that you can take their story and write a new one.
00:32:16.720 --> 00:32:19.279
And the only way that's gonna happen is if my heart's open.
00:32:19.440 --> 00:32:21.279
And if my heart's open, my hand will be open.
00:32:21.359 --> 00:32:24.720
It takes not just me, though, it takes all of us doing that at the church.
00:32:27.200 --> 00:32:27.599
Right?
00:32:28.000 --> 00:32:33.279
They say it takes what seven positive connections to overcome one bad one.
00:32:36.240 --> 00:32:39.759
I mean, again, we have to do that because why God never closed his heart towards us.
00:32:39.839 --> 00:32:42.319
So we should let our hearts be closed.
00:32:42.559 --> 00:32:44.640
We can't let disappointment harden our heart.
00:32:44.799 --> 00:32:54.960
We have to open our hands, we have to open our own, we have to open our tables, open our lives because someone else's story may begin where your compassion refuses to give up.
00:32:58.079 --> 00:33:01.599
Again, an open heart opens the hand, and the open hand reflects the heart of God.
00:33:01.680 --> 00:33:04.319
So right now, this morning asking, is your heart open?
00:33:05.039 --> 00:33:06.160
Not asking, is your hand open?
00:33:06.400 --> 00:33:07.759
Ask me, is your heart open?
00:33:10.319 --> 00:33:18.960
Right now, if you if someone, if you were to go to the blessing box, you looked at someone in need, would you see that as a person that was worthy of the dignity that God created them with?
00:33:24.400 --> 00:33:28.640
Would you look at that person and see them as a person Jesus was willing to die for?
00:33:30.319 --> 00:33:45.359
Because if Jesus is willing to die on the cross for them, if the Father is desperately waiting for them to come back home, if the Holy Spirit is constantly calling to them, saying, Come to me, who are we to not show them relentless compassion?
00:33:48.960 --> 00:33:52.720
We have to open up our hands, but first we have to open up our hearts.
00:33:58.319 --> 00:34:00.799
I know it's we're getting ready to go eat, we're getting ready to go next door.
00:34:03.519 --> 00:34:08.079
But this morning, maybe you're hearing you're with one of those two hands, right?
00:34:08.159 --> 00:34:12.880
You're you're you're you have a cowloused heart because you've been burned by one too many people.
00:34:14.559 --> 00:34:16.880
Well, this morning the Holy Spirit wants to heal you.
00:34:18.320 --> 00:34:21.679
He wants to take that cowus off so you can feel his love.
00:34:22.559 --> 00:34:26.400
And you can see the people that he's called you to share his love with.
00:34:28.480 --> 00:34:30.960
Maybe here today you've encountered someone.
00:34:32.639 --> 00:34:35.199
That they definitely had a closed heart and a closed hand.
00:34:38.800 --> 00:34:39.920
Maybe that was you.
00:34:40.880 --> 00:34:41.440
I don't know.
00:34:41.519 --> 00:34:42.719
I don't I'm not judging anybody.
00:34:42.800 --> 00:34:44.159
I'm just throwing out like this.
00:34:45.679 --> 00:34:50.079
But I know the Holy Spirit is probably talking to you right now about wherever you're at, but I just want you to know this.
00:34:50.239 --> 00:34:53.280
The Holy Spirit wants to show you how much Jesus loves you.
00:34:54.159 --> 00:34:55.760
He wants to transform your life.
00:34:55.920 --> 00:34:59.039
He wants to do a work in your life like he's doing it justice in his life.
00:34:59.280 --> 00:35:04.559
And again, just I don't need to pick on you to call you out, but man, it's just so much fun to me to watch what Jesus is doing.
00:35:04.719 --> 00:35:10.239
Every time you share a post, every time you write a thought on scripture, it's like, wow, look what Jesus is doing.
00:35:16.159 --> 00:35:18.079
God's not done changing stories.
00:35:19.519 --> 00:35:22.079
So let him open your heart to screen so you can open him.
00:35:22.159 --> 00:35:23.360
Let's go to the word in prayer.
00:35:29.599 --> 00:35:32.800
Has your heart started to close?
00:35:33.840 --> 00:35:39.679
And friend, I know that is a tough question, but before you move on with your day, I have to ask it.
00:35:40.880 --> 00:35:45.039
Maybe your heart has started closed because someone took advantage of your kindness.
00:35:47.199 --> 00:35:50.800
Perhaps someone lied to you, disappointed you, or broke your trust.
00:35:51.840 --> 00:35:57.760
Maybe you've helped before and it didn't seem to make a difference, and little by little, you become more guarded.
00:35:58.480 --> 00:36:00.719
Or perhaps you're on the other side of this message.
00:36:00.960 --> 00:36:02.719
Maybe you relate more to Julius.
00:36:03.360 --> 00:36:07.519
You wondered if people would still love you if they knew your whole story.
00:36:08.239 --> 00:36:11.920
You've been carrying shame, convinced your past will always define you.
00:36:12.639 --> 00:36:16.159
Well, the good news is that Jesus meets both of us.
00:36:16.559 --> 00:36:21.519
He meets the person with the closed heart, and he meets the person with the broken heart.
00:36:22.400 --> 00:36:25.119
And just didn't wait until we deserved his grace.
00:36:25.599 --> 00:36:28.800
He opened his hands on the cross and gave himself for us.
00:36:29.599 --> 00:36:34.800
He can forgive your sins, give you a new heart, and begin transforming your life.
00:36:35.119 --> 00:36:40.480
And if you've never trusted Jesus, today can be the day you surrender your life to him.
00:36:41.440 --> 00:36:46.800
If you're already following Jesus, maybe your prayer today isn't, Lord, give me more to give.
00:36:46.960 --> 00:36:50.800
Maybe it's simply, Lord, don't let my heart grow hard.
00:36:51.039 --> 00:36:53.440
Help me love people the way you love them.
00:36:53.760 --> 00:36:55.119
The way you love me.
00:36:56.079 --> 00:36:57.280
Let's pray together.
00:36:57.599 --> 00:37:01.519
Lord, thank you for never closing your heart toward us.
00:37:02.000 --> 00:37:07.119
When we are spiritually poor and can never repay you, you opened your hand and gave us your son.
00:37:08.159 --> 00:37:12.960
Thank you for your grace that forgives us, your spirit that transforms us.
00:37:13.599 --> 00:37:15.440
Lord, search our hearts.
00:37:15.760 --> 00:37:21.199
If disappointment, fear, pride, or judgment has hardness, softness again.
00:37:21.599 --> 00:37:29.840
Help us to be wise without becoming cynical, compassionate without being callous, and generous because you have first been generous to us.
00:37:30.639 --> 00:37:36.000
And for the person who has never trusted Jesus, draw them to yourself today.
00:37:36.239 --> 00:37:39.679
Let them know that no story is beyond your redemption.
00:37:40.159 --> 00:37:46.719
And for those who already belong to you, continue shaping us into people whose open hearts lead to open hands.
00:37:47.039 --> 00:37:49.840
We ask all this in the name of Jesus.
00:37:50.159 --> 00:37:50.800
Amen.
00:37:51.440 --> 00:37:52.719
Now I'd love to hear from you.

It's one small way we can all keep our hands open.
00:38:51.840 --> 00:38:54.239
Now, as you head into this week, remember this.
00:38:54.559 --> 00:38:59.199
Don't let disappointments of yesterday determine the compassion of tomorrow.
00:38:59.519 --> 00:39:02.320
God has never closed his heart towards you.
00:39:02.559 --> 00:39:04.239
So keep your heart open.
00:39:04.480 --> 00:39:05.760
Keep your hand open.
00:39:05.920 --> 00:39:11.760
And trust that God can begin someone else's story where your compassion refuses to end.
00:39:12.000 --> 00:39:15.840
Until next time, grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus.
