Speaker 1: The volume. All right, guys.
00:00:11
Speaker 2: Hey, you know the boy DC loves to eat and I'm back on my bs trying to get my weight down. So I'm partnering up again with my good friends at Factor and at Factor Meals. They have things made for you no matter what your nutrition goals are, whether you want to gain weight, lose weight, or just have food available to you. And I'm having to hit the grocery store, plan meals and do all those other things that makes it hard to really stay with your nutrition. But at Factor they have got you, guys, as they always have. Look, I'm happy to welcome Factor back. They've been on this journey with us since the very beginning of me getting a YouTube channel. But this company never frozen ready in two minutes. So there's always something available for you that you can look forward to. And it's a very good meal, mitnus. All the additives and all that stuff that makes food not good for you, Factor has got you. I use these so you should too. Head to factormills dot com slash DC Show fifty and use my promo code DC Show fifty off for fifty percent off and three daily greens per box with new subscriptions only, while supplies last until nine twenty seven, twenty twenty six. See website for more details. Guys, link up with my friends at Factor. They're the real deal.
00:01:31
Speaker 1: All right, guys.
00:01:32
Speaker 2: I am joined by the Champion of the World, Mackenzie Dern. Mackenzie, how you feeling this week?
00:01:38
Speaker 1: Man? Doing great? I mean it's different having a fight week as a champion. Yeah, having the face off, like shaking hands, but the belts on your shoulder you No, it's not the same movements, but I mean, yeah, it feels good, calmer.
00:01:51
Speaker 2: The last time I saw you, we were in Washington, DC and we were sitting on this stage in front of all these fans, and you said something. I go, man, it's gotta be young Lee. When's the fighting happened? And you said, well, Joan Wie Lee might be retiring. And I go, oh, are you telling me something?
00:02:07
Speaker 1: And you're like, oh, no, no, nothing.
00:02:09
Speaker 2: And then it comes out that you're fighting against Gillian Robinson. Did you know at that time that that's who you were fighting?
00:02:15
Speaker 1: No? No, Washington? Oh wait wait wait, actually yeah, June I did.
00:02:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, because when I was like, oh.
00:02:21
Speaker 1: You were like yeah, yeah, yeah, excited.
00:02:25
Speaker 2: How excited are you about this fight, this this particular challenge.
00:02:28
Speaker 1: This is a young lady that.
00:02:29
Speaker 2: Actually can grapple also, right, And if there's anyone I'm not saying she can actually grapple with you in terms of traditional jiu jitsu, but if there is anybody that can grapple with you, it would seem to be this young lady.
00:02:42
Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, she's definitely someone who's dangerous. I mean as a grappler with a striker, when you find a striker, you can kind of get like reckless sometimes on the ground. But she's someone who I need to make sure I'm on points. So we just trained so much grappling, which was good, and as my first title defense, I'm definitely excited. And she has like, you know, the most submissions in woman's MMA, so I'm definitely excited to fight her. And she's on a five fight winning streak and it's gonna be exciting. I think she's not gonna just want to like hold me down, and I think she's gonna want to actually engage in grappling.
00:03:17
Speaker 2: So but that could ultimately be a huge mistake for someone like you.
00:03:20
Speaker 1: For sure, but I hope she does that.
00:03:23
Speaker 2: Well, maybe she wants to actually grapple and then it ultimately might lead to her demise. But the last fight when you fought Verna, who had good grappling herself right and showed the first time that you guys competed, you beat her in the stand though, It's like you have now developed an ability to fight everywhere inside the octagon. Can you see a world in which you could make that your type of fight, because then it would seem to suit you because Jillian doesn't seem as comfortable standing as you seem comfortable standing.
00:03:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. And I think that Verna had better striking than Jillian has better striking the jillion, So that's why I think she will just be trying to take the fight to the ground a lot more and engage more on the ground. I think the most dangerous part for me as a as a fighter is someone like Vienna who might take down and kind of steal the rounds and just be safe. But the plan is to beat Jillian, you know, on the striking and then on the grappling. And I mean, obviously I was taken down a lot with Verenna, so I mean we've been working a lot on the takedown defenses for sure.
00:04:26
Speaker 2: Have you have you noticed a change in your life since becoming the UFC Champion in what ways?
00:04:34
Speaker 1: Well, I mean, first off, when I came back to training, I mean, my technique would justa it went up a whole I don't know how, but it was just everything was so much better on my coach. I'm like, training like a champion. It was weird, like my punches were stronger, my kicks were better. Everything was just better. I don't know. It's like I think the pressure when it comes off your shoulders, you know, of actually getting the title, you can just train to work on the little deep like the little mistakes that you make, and it's a lot more there's not there, you know what I mean. It's a lot more fluid obviously a lot of obligations and responsibilities and just living life like a champion. You know, you go out on the street and everyone's notices you, and so I'm like, oh, shoot, I don't want to be like, you know, reckless on living life. You know, just you try to be a good example in what you do, and just so many opportunities. I met so many people and so many different worlds, Golden globes, you know, it's just It's crazy the type of thing You've got to say no to some stuff otherwise you're never trying.
00:05:31
Speaker 2: You'll never have time for yourself if you say yes to everything. How's that part of it?
00:05:35
Speaker 1: Been?
00:05:36
Speaker 2: Going to the Golden Globes and honestly living a life that most champions don't necessarily get to live.
00:05:42
Speaker 1: We do, right.
00:05:43
Speaker 2: I remember the SPI's as the heavyweight champion opposed to the Spies, as the light everyweight champion opposed to just going through the Spies. It was a much different experience for me. How have you enjoyed that part of life as you're not only doing that as a champion to fighter, but also as a mother.
00:06:01
Speaker 1: I mean, I try to take my daughter along with a lot of the things. So I mean she's going to the hockey games and I mean anythings that we that I can get her involved and she likes to go and we're able to take advantage of that. So lots of different experiences. But yeah, just like I mean, I think the biggest part is just kind of learning to I kind of came back to who McKenzie is, you know, and just being connected to who I am, just because the more the more out there I am in the world and doing these things, you have like critics on everything, like, yeah, the Golden Globes, you know, like what were they doing in the Golden Gloves? You know, Oh, they looked bad. I'm like, I'm sure most of these people if they got the opportunity to go to the Golden Globes, they would, you know. So it's just you kind of just learn to not care what the people say, and you realize like, yeah, the more views that people haven't, the more out there you are, the more people are going to talk about you. So it was really able to help me just to kind of get back to being true to myself and what I want and my goals and everything like that.
00:06:58
Speaker 2: And when you get to that self confidence, it also makes you a better fighter, right, It actually makes you a better fighter because now you learn to eliminate the distractions. Whereas when we're just in fighting and we're kind of living in our bubble, you can almost be safe.
00:07:13
Speaker 1: Right.
00:07:13
Speaker 2: There's there are critics, but not when you when you start stepping out into the mainstream, it's a completely different thing. But that also when you come back to this world, it makes you a better athlete in this environment. That we have created for ourselves because now you've learned to deal with distractions on a whole different level.
00:07:30
Speaker 1: I agree. I feel that I talked to my coaches about it. It's like, man, I feel it just the camp feels different than when I was fighting for the bell, you know, and it's just we're war calmer, and you know, little things that happen are big things that happen don't distract you as much.
00:07:45
Speaker 2: Is that a stressed? Was it because of the idea of becoming the champion? Is now done? Because for so long we all thought Mackenzie durned. When you got here, there was pressure right away, right because of your background in jiu jitsu, but everybody expected you to become a champion. Now that you've accomplished that, when you sit back and look at your career, like, how good does it feel?
00:08:07
Speaker 1: Like?
00:08:07
Speaker 2: What are your thoughts of your career to this point?
00:08:10
Speaker 1: Yeah? I mean I think I had a very human career, you know what I mean, Like with ups and down. It wasn't like I mean, I wish it could be like Aronda Rozi. It was just straight. But I think the type of champion I want to be, you know, just hopefully have a long title reign and breaking records and things like that. I think all the adversity I went through with surgeries and motherhood and you know, some kind of hard losses, I think that's ultimately going to prepare me for what I can accomplish as the champion, you know. And so obviously me winning the belt was mostly for Moa, you know, that was my biggest motivation. That was the reason why that got me there. And it's kind of just to show her, to teach her values that I hopefully she can take in her life. But now that we accomplished that, I can just kind of sit back and think, like, Okay, what does McKenzie want to accomplish? You know? And that's why I'm trying to break these records down.
00:09:06
Speaker 2: What are the answers? What's the answer to that?
00:09:09
Speaker 1: Like, what records I want to? Like?
00:09:11
Speaker 2: What does McKenzie want? Because it is it is true that we as athletes do for our families, right The why is right in front of you, So you operate for that why. But once you get to that ultimate goal, you got to start dealing with self. When you look within yourself and you look inside this career where you've pretty much done everything. Now won the belt, you defend the belt this weekend, obviously win, defend. What does McKenzie want in this thing now as the UFC champion, not UFC fighter trying to chase down the championship belt.
00:09:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean my main goal would be just kind of like to break records, break records. You know, most submission, most bonuses in the woman's division, have the most wins in straweight division. Hopefully get to a hall of fame level and kind of get into another group of legends. And then on the bigger side, that's all the mackenzie personal goals. But then on the bigger side, just try to keep getting women's MMA exciting and spread spread women's MMA too to women and get them into self defense. And see what I can do just kind of to help with the big name and the attention and media, and see how far I can spread jiu jitsu and stuff like that.
00:10:26
Speaker 2: Jiu jitsu that is what you are known for. And now you get two jiu jitsu fighters fighting for a UFC championship, two women right from that background in the co main event, co headlining a UFC numbered event. How proud of you that you are able to take the sport that's given you so much to the world stage because now with UFCBJJ, with all the other type of competitions, jiu jitsu is growing and a lot of that has to do with fighters like you that have been on the forefront and really preaching the message of jiu jitsu. How proud are you? I'm pretty sure as Julian the same thing, she'd be insanely proud herself.
00:11:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, super proud. I mean that was one of my biggest goals of when I made the transition to him to make was like, how can I make a difference for jiu jitsu outside of address our community, you know, And I mean obviously I could be like a ten title world title holder, and what would that change in my jiu jitsu world, you know, going to and fighting mainstream to the UFC and representing jiu jitsu and then getting the belt. I mean the UFC number one was howys crazy? And jiu jitsu? So to be able to show the efficiency of jiu jitsu for men, for women, as a mom, you know, all over, it's just that's that's really fulfilling because I was a big goal of mine, and yeah, to see it growing and keep growing. It's it's amazing because it's still pretty young.
00:11:49
Speaker 2: Do you still work?
00:11:49
Speaker 1: Gee?
00:11:50
Speaker 2: You're still training the.
00:11:51
Speaker 1: G at all? Yes? Yeah you do?
00:11:52
Speaker 2: Uh how often you like?
00:11:57
Speaker 1: You like gee? Jiu jitsu? I love?
00:11:58
Speaker 2: It's so hard, it so restricting.
00:12:02
Speaker 1: It's so restricting. Yeah, yeah, you know, but it's fun. I mean you have so many options. That's I like that I can tie you in, know, not with your with your lapel and just a whole bunch of chokes and everybody.
00:12:13
Speaker 2: Jiu jitsu coach used to make us wear a GE. Yeah, and I was like, wait, why we don't fight with that? Then I realized that by wearing the G when I took it off, oh my god, it made a difference.
00:12:23
Speaker 1: But it's so hard. Yeah. If you can fight good with the G when you take it off, it's like it's a different story.
00:12:28
Speaker 2: When you get to Saturday night, you win this championship? What would that mean to Ackinsie Dern And where would it rank in terms of your accomplishments from jiu Jitsu World Champion to UFC World Champion? Where would this victory rank and all that?
00:12:41
Speaker 1: I mean? I mean, of course I'm the champion and I feel like the champion, but getting this defending my title would really just kind of solidify that a little bit more. And a submission win over Jilian would be amazing, like the icing on the cake. And I mean, I think that would just be I mean not probably number one, my and my like and feeling and how important it was because each time it was just you got to push yourself more and more. You know, every single camp you do now is for a title fight, so it's in you know, your body takes it, your your mental state takes it, you know, and to keep that motivation and to keep doing better. And I think that people will see me way better than I was in my title fight, which is what I will be the most proud of is being able to show that even when you reach the highest level, you're still constantly involving. We're never percent. We know you never reached the full time like the top.
00:13:34
Speaker 2: Nobody ever gets perfect.
00:13:36
Speaker 1: Now.
00:13:36

So to be able to show the efficiency of jiu jitsu for men, for women, as a mom, you know, all over, it's just that's that's really fulfilling because I was a big goal of mine, and yeah, to see it growing and keep growing. It's it's amazing because it's still pretty young.
