WEBVTT
1
00:00:00.280 --> 00:00:03.502
What choices you make day to day,
2
00:00:04.043 --> 00:00:08.786
what you decide to put in your body can truly affect your health.
3
00:00:09.287 --> 00:00:13.510
There is so much information that's out in the world.
4
00:00:14.190 --> 00:00:15.591
It's just a lot of noise.
5
00:00:16.131 --> 00:00:23.877
And I kind of see my role and my job as helping clients filter through that noise because a lot of that stuff is true.
6
00:00:24.017 --> 00:00:25.178
A lot of it is very valid.
7
00:00:25.538 --> 00:00:26.699
But I help people figure out,
8
00:00:26.699 --> 00:00:26.819
OK,
9
00:00:26.939 --> 00:00:27.840
what is true for you?
10
00:00:29.884 --> 00:00:39.048
Lori Fishbard is a licensed clinical nutritionist and board-certified integrative health coach and a long-time client of Oasis.
11
00:00:40.228 --> 00:00:42.990
Lori knows firsthand that health is a gift,
12
00:00:43.510 --> 00:00:48.152
having faced her own battles with an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto's.
13
00:00:49.352 --> 00:00:50.633
Through her personal journey,
14
00:00:50.953 --> 00:00:53.974
she discovered her love for sharing that gift with others.
15
00:00:54.575 --> 00:00:57.796
She has taught the full Oasis team about healthy living
16
00:00:58.344 --> 00:01:00.626
and even some hair and scalp tips.
17
00:01:01.647 --> 00:01:04.309
Lori's knowledge spans metabolic syndrome,
18
00:01:04.530 --> 00:01:05.330
autoimmunity,
19
00:01:05.571 --> 00:01:06.591
celiac disease,
20
00:01:06.772 --> 00:01:07.873
gluten sensitivity,
21
00:01:08.193 --> 00:01:08.753
thyroid,
22
00:01:08.994 --> 00:01:10.275
digestive and gut health,
23
00:01:10.715 --> 00:01:11.816
and so much more.
24
00:01:12.296 --> 00:01:15.479
I can say she's made nutritious eating so much fun,
25
00:01:15.579 --> 00:01:16.800
not only for myself,
26
00:01:17.261 --> 00:01:18.802
but my picky family too.
27
00:01:19.303 --> 00:01:23.546
I use the tips and cleanses she shares on her websites all the time.
28
00:01:24.187 --> 00:01:25.268
You've got to check it out.
29
00:01:29.780 --> 00:01:30.120
Lori,
30
00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:31.761
welcome to The Curl Code.
31
00:01:31.781 --> 00:01:32.801
Thank you for being here.
32
00:01:33.101 --> 00:01:33.842
It's a pleasure.
33
00:01:33.922 --> 00:01:35.282
I'm so excited to be here.
34
00:01:36.323 --> 00:01:42.645
You have been such a tremendous and wonderful resource for me,
35
00:01:43.085 --> 00:01:43.606
for sure.
36
00:01:43.986 --> 00:01:45.206
How much I learned from you.
37
00:01:45.266 --> 00:01:45.546
I mean,
38
00:01:45.747 --> 00:01:46.207
thank you.
39
00:01:46.667 --> 00:01:46.827
Well,
40
00:01:46.907 --> 00:01:47.507
first of all,
41
00:01:47.827 --> 00:01:59.012
I have to thank you because you were my very first client when I decided that I was going to actually switch gears and go back.
42
00:01:59.072 --> 00:02:02.453
to school and get educated in health coaching and nutrition.
43
00:02:02.594 --> 00:02:04.234
You agreed to be my first client.
44
00:02:04.915 --> 00:02:06.315
That was like 14 years ago.
45
00:02:06.515 --> 00:02:07.436
So thank you so much.
46
00:02:07.496 --> 00:02:10.677
That was so wonderful and eye-opening.
47
00:02:10.957 --> 00:02:12.978
You blew me away with all that you shared.
48
00:02:13.058 --> 00:02:13.998
It was incredible.
49
00:02:14.199 --> 00:02:14.319
Yeah.
50
00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:15.079
Thank you.
51
00:02:15.159 --> 00:02:15.419
I mean,
52
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:16.159
back then,
53
00:02:16.199 --> 00:02:20.841
I feel like people weren't talking about nutrition as much as they're talking about it now.
54
00:02:20.981 --> 00:02:22.582
And we didn't really have this,
55
00:02:23.122 --> 00:02:23.362
you know,
56
00:02:23.743 --> 00:02:26.684
flooding of information from social media like we do now.
57
00:02:27.148 --> 00:02:31.171
So the health and wellness space was not inundated with all of this stuff.
58
00:02:31.191 --> 00:02:32.452
It was really just,
59
00:02:33.213 --> 00:02:33.453
you know,
60
00:02:33.493 --> 00:02:34.634
if you were interested in it,
61
00:02:34.634 --> 00:02:36.055
then maybe you learned about it.
62
00:02:36.175 --> 00:02:36.516
And so
63
00:02:37.096 --> 00:02:38.657
I just remember every time we met,
64
00:02:38.898 --> 00:02:41.960
your eyes would just get wide and you'd come back and be like,
65
00:02:41.960 --> 00:02:45.123
and I tried this and I feel this way and it's so great.
66
00:02:45.303 --> 00:02:46.163
It was really,
67
00:02:46.524 --> 00:02:47.885
it was a wonderful experience.
68
00:02:48.445 --> 00:02:51.168
So you're a curly girl with stunning curls.
69
00:02:52.429 --> 00:02:54.370
Tell us a little bit about your curl journey.
70
00:02:54.971 --> 00:02:56.272
My curl journey.
71
00:02:56.752 --> 00:02:56.872
Oh,
72
00:02:56.912 --> 00:02:57.493
my goodness.
73
00:02:57.613 --> 00:02:57.813
Well,
74
00:02:58.013 --> 00:03:00.915
I never appreciated or liked my curls.
75
00:03:01.315 --> 00:03:01.555
You know,
76
00:03:01.595 --> 00:03:03.076
I think when I was really little,
77
00:03:03.236 --> 00:03:05.037
my mom just kind of left them alone.
78
00:03:05.637 --> 00:03:07.959
And then she started brushing them out.
79
00:03:08.599 --> 00:03:09.540
And I have thick,
80
00:03:10.340 --> 00:03:11.421
coarse hair.
81
00:03:11.961 --> 00:03:13.342
So it just didn't work.
82
00:03:13.442 --> 00:03:14.423
It just didn't look good.
83
00:03:14.483 --> 00:03:15.443
So unfortunately,
84
00:03:15.503 --> 00:03:18.625
I grew up not loving my curls for a really long time.
85
00:03:19.606 --> 00:03:20.506
And it wasn't,
86
00:03:20.767 --> 00:03:21.047
I mean,
87
00:03:21.047 --> 00:03:22.928
it was just like I had this big
88
00:03:24.120 --> 00:03:25.521
fluff of hair.
89
00:03:25.861 --> 00:03:26.122
You know,
90
00:03:26.242 --> 00:03:27.963
I remember in middle school,
91
00:03:28.884 --> 00:03:30.285
the guy sitting behind me,
92
00:03:30.585 --> 00:03:33.667
like hiding pencils in my hair.
93
00:03:34.248 --> 00:03:35.288
It was awful.
94
00:03:35.368 --> 00:03:35.929
It was awful.
95
00:03:36.389 --> 00:03:36.629
And
96
00:03:37.610 --> 00:03:43.755
I just kind of went along with it and pretended like I was part of the joke and in on the joke because otherwise it'd be really hurtful.
97
00:03:44.515 --> 00:03:44.776
Anyway,
98
00:03:44.856 --> 00:03:46.917
so I wasn't until college.
99
00:03:46.957 --> 00:03:50.060
I finally let my hair grow out because my mom always kept it really short.
100
00:03:50.060 --> 00:03:50.720
She always said it looked.
101
00:03:50.720 --> 00:03:51.280
look better short.
102
00:03:51.360 --> 00:03:53.382
And then I started appreciating my curls,
103
00:03:53.442 --> 00:03:55.363
started knowing a little bit what to do with them.
104
00:03:55.763 --> 00:03:58.825
But it wasn't until really
105
00:03:59.325 --> 00:04:07.910
I met you and had the experience of knowing really what to do to bring out the best in my curls.
106
00:04:08.130 --> 00:04:08.871
And also the cut,
107
00:04:08.911 --> 00:04:11.352
knowing how to frame my face,
108
00:04:11.372 --> 00:04:14.874
because it was always just really thick and big and it had no shape.
109
00:04:15.455 --> 00:04:15.595
Well,
110
00:04:15.595 --> 00:04:17.336
and especially when you have thick hair.
111
00:04:18.092 --> 00:04:21.594
People really are just overwhelmed and not sure what to do with it.
112
00:04:21.955 --> 00:04:22.135
Yeah.
113
00:04:22.435 --> 00:04:28.499
And you've had also some different struggles with your hair and scalp,
114
00:04:29.080 --> 00:04:29.320
right,
115
00:04:29.460 --> 00:04:30.941
around health.
116
00:04:31.581 --> 00:04:31.821
Yes,
117
00:04:32.022 --> 00:04:36.164
I think I have gone through many stages.
118
00:04:36.465 --> 00:04:37.545
So I have three kids.
119
00:04:37.585 --> 00:04:39.667
I think it was after the first one,
120
00:04:40.307 --> 00:04:42.248
I lost a tremendous amount of hair.
121
00:04:42.409 --> 00:04:42.629
I mean,
122
00:04:42.669 --> 00:04:45.210
I had like bald spots and I didn't know,
123
00:04:45.250 --> 00:04:47.292
but I was developing a thyroid issue.
124
00:04:48.104 --> 00:04:51.368
was later diagnosed with hypothyroidism and then Hashimoto's.
125
00:04:51.889 --> 00:04:53.971
And I think the hormones from after giving birth,
126
00:04:53.991 --> 00:04:55.433
there were a lot of different factors.
127
00:04:55.613 --> 00:04:59.297
But that was just terrifying and so hard.
128
00:04:59.338 --> 00:05:01.360
And I just didn't know what to do with it.
129
00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:06.802
And then it kind of happened again after the birth of my second child.
130
00:05:07.362 --> 00:05:10.323
And then things kind of were back to normal.
131
00:05:10.524 --> 00:05:13.625
And then as I kind of struggled with my thyroid issues,
132
00:05:14.965 --> 00:05:16.106
it would thin out.
133
00:05:17.286 --> 00:05:18.727
It was just unstable.
134
00:05:18.907 --> 00:05:20.928
I kind of never knew what was going on.
135
00:05:21.508 --> 00:05:23.429
I look back now at pictures,
136
00:05:24.249 --> 00:05:24.849
and I was like,
137
00:05:24.889 --> 00:05:26.110
wow,
138
00:05:26.850 --> 00:05:30.732
I was really bald for a good couple months.
139
00:05:30.952 --> 00:05:33.053
And I don't know how I got through.
140
00:05:33.293 --> 00:05:35.054
I think I just had other priorities.
141
00:05:35.235 --> 00:05:35.355
Well,
142
00:05:35.355 --> 00:05:36.255
you had newborns.
143
00:05:36.315 --> 00:05:37.336
And I had newborns,
144
00:05:37.416 --> 00:05:37.616
yeah.
145
00:05:37.836 --> 00:05:38.817
But it was hard.
146
00:05:38.837 --> 00:05:39.657
It was troubling.
147
00:05:39.837 --> 00:05:40.297
And then
148
00:05:41.058 --> 00:05:42.239
I think for the past,
149
00:05:42.359 --> 00:05:42.839
I don't know,
150
00:05:43.399 --> 00:05:44.080
10 years,
151
00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:44.860
15 years,
152
00:05:44.940 --> 00:05:45.761
things have been good.
153
00:05:45.801 --> 00:05:46.761
I have noticed lately,
154
00:05:46.821 --> 00:05:47.081
though,
155
00:05:47.422 --> 00:05:48.682
as I've hit menopause,
156
00:05:48.722 --> 00:05:51.264
that my hair is thinning out a little bit more.
157
00:05:52.284 --> 00:05:52.405
Yeah.
158
00:05:52.505 --> 00:05:56.727
And these dysregulated hormones or imbalance of hormones,
159
00:05:56.827 --> 00:05:58.048
whether postpartum,
160
00:05:58.832 --> 00:06:04.136
or going into menopause certainly affects the thickness of hair.
161
00:06:04.537 --> 00:06:06.278
I don't think a lot of people know that.
162
00:06:06.318 --> 00:06:07.739
I know when I had my babies,
163
00:06:08.580 --> 00:06:16.907
I had no idea that you have this tremendous amount of hair loss about three or four months after giving birth.
164
00:06:17.867 --> 00:06:20.209
And a lot of women that come here,
165
00:06:20.669 --> 00:06:23.612
now we talk about it so that they're aware.
166
00:06:24.192 --> 00:06:27.714
And often you don't even know how much you lost until it starts growing back in.
167
00:06:27.874 --> 00:06:28.555
And you're thinking,
168
00:06:29.035 --> 00:06:30.816
what's all this short hair growing in?
169
00:06:30.896 --> 00:06:31.376
Right.
170
00:06:32.437 --> 00:06:32.557
Yeah,
171
00:06:32.597 --> 00:06:33.598
I wish I would have known that.
172
00:06:34.298 --> 00:06:34.438
Yeah,
173
00:06:34.618 --> 00:06:37.540
it is definitely a conversation that we need to have with people.
174
00:06:38.080 --> 00:06:44.664
You were the first to introduce us to the power of using a high quality essential oil.
175
00:06:45.024 --> 00:06:47.185
So let's start there a little bit.
176
00:06:47.366 --> 00:06:48.746
Tell us about some,
177
00:06:49.267 --> 00:06:51.448
like a couple of key ways that.
178
00:06:51.776 --> 00:06:56.379
we can use essential oils to help make our lives a little bit better.
179
00:06:57.199 --> 00:06:57.619
So yes,
180
00:06:57.639 --> 00:07:02.722
so as I started learning and went back to school and learning about the power of food and nutrition,
181
00:07:03.182 --> 00:07:09.105
I also learned about other things that can enhance our health and that included herbs and essential oils.
182
00:07:10.346 --> 00:07:16.489
I started diffusing lavender in my home at sleep time for my kids.
183
00:07:16.530 --> 00:07:17.990
It was very calming.
184
00:07:18.110 --> 00:07:18.711
It kind of,
185
00:07:18.851 --> 00:07:19.091
you know,
186
00:07:19.171 --> 00:07:20.872
promoted relaxation.
187
00:07:21.376 --> 00:07:26.618
I was using rosemary oil on my scalp because it promotes hair growth.
188
00:07:27.418 --> 00:07:32.699
They have all these proprietary blends of certain oils that have been studied to do certain things.
189
00:07:32.699 --> 00:07:35.580
So they have one that's immunity boosting.
190
00:07:35.740 --> 00:07:36.021
You know,
191
00:07:36.381 --> 00:07:40.802
I started making my own cleaning products with lemon essential oils.
192
00:07:41.102 --> 00:07:42.082
And as I was doing this,
193
00:07:42.122 --> 00:07:44.023
I was just sharing it with you.
194
00:07:44.483 --> 00:07:47.364
And we kind of went on that journey together.
195
00:07:47.504 --> 00:07:48.925
Because as I was doing it,
196
00:07:48.945 --> 00:07:51.888
I was just so excited about the results I was getting.
197
00:07:52.129 --> 00:07:59.476
I remember you invited me to come and speak to your staff and your team about the value of essential oils.
198
00:07:59.636 --> 00:08:02.079
You were sharing some of your wins.
199
00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:03.560
So it was great.
200
00:08:04.041 --> 00:08:04.221
Yes.
201
00:08:04.301 --> 00:08:05.782
And we use it in the salon.
202
00:08:06.003 --> 00:08:07.744
And just so you know,
203
00:08:08.045 --> 00:08:10.207
every new team member that comes on board,
204
00:08:10.307 --> 00:08:11.048
I gift them.
205
00:08:11.532 --> 00:08:12.393
the On Guard,
206
00:08:12.473 --> 00:08:13.514
which is from doTERRA.
207
00:08:13.654 --> 00:08:14.996
That's the immunity blend.
208
00:08:15.076 --> 00:08:15.356
Right.
209
00:08:15.356 --> 00:08:16.737
Because I need them to stay healthy.
210
00:08:17.859 --> 00:08:19.600
And especially during a pandemic.
211
00:08:19.700 --> 00:08:20.021
I mean,
212
00:08:20.141 --> 00:08:22.103
it's and it is amazing.
213
00:08:22.223 --> 00:08:23.044
It's amazing.
214
00:08:23.264 --> 00:08:23.544
And,
215
00:08:23.965 --> 00:08:24.245
you know,
216
00:08:24.505 --> 00:08:28.229
the fact that you taught me there's really three ways to use essential oils.
217
00:08:28.269 --> 00:08:29.250
You can diffuse it.
218
00:08:29.490 --> 00:08:29.811
Right.
219
00:08:29.951 --> 00:08:31.012
Some are ingestible,
220
00:08:31.412 --> 00:08:31.853
not all.
221
00:08:32.353 --> 00:08:32.574
And then,
222
00:08:32.574 --> 00:08:33.014
of course,
223
00:08:33.094 --> 00:08:34.776
rubbing it on the bottom of your feet.
224
00:08:34.996 --> 00:08:37.398
Because tell me again why the bottom of the feet?
225
00:08:37.578 --> 00:08:37.698
Yeah,
226
00:08:37.738 --> 00:08:40.300
I think that it's the nerve endings that are there.
227
00:08:40.420 --> 00:08:41.781
It's highly absorbable.
228
00:08:42.081 --> 00:08:43.222
You can also rub it in.
229
00:08:43.322 --> 00:08:49.546
I use frankincense oil and I rub it on my thyroid for my hypothyroidism because there's been some studies.
230
00:08:49.626 --> 00:08:49.866
You know,
231
00:08:49.946 --> 00:08:55.070
more and more studies are popping up using essential oils and their benefits.
232
00:08:55.390 --> 00:08:56.611
And that can be beneficial,
233
00:08:56.711 --> 00:08:56.951
too.
234
00:08:57.111 --> 00:09:03.236
We sell the rosemary oil to clients who feel that they're somehow follicly challenged.
235
00:09:03.296 --> 00:09:03.736
Yes.
236
00:09:04.056 --> 00:09:05.937
And it works.
237
00:09:05.977 --> 00:09:06.217
I mean,
238
00:09:06.297 --> 00:09:11.580
your hair is much thicker than just even a few years ago when you were having the,
239
00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:12.221
you know,
240
00:09:12.301 --> 00:09:14.462
different thyroid issues kind of come up.
241
00:09:14.822 --> 00:09:15.542
Yeah.
242
00:09:15.542 --> 00:09:16.963
And it goes up and down,
243
00:09:17.003 --> 00:09:17.523
up and down.
244
00:09:17.583 --> 00:09:20.845
But every single morning I'm putting my rosemary oil in my hair.
245
00:09:21.306 --> 00:09:25.388
And I just love the way it feels also because it's an awakening oil.
246
00:09:25.448 --> 00:09:26.889
It's kind of a stimulating oil.
247
00:09:27.349 --> 00:09:30.691
So not only do I love the benefit that it's having to my hair follicles,
248
00:09:30.751 --> 00:09:33.012
I just love the smell and the way that it makes.
249
00:09:33.232 --> 00:09:33.693
me feel.
250
00:09:34.814 --> 00:09:35.895
And the Breathe Blend,
251
00:09:36.315 --> 00:09:36.575
you know,
252
00:09:36.575 --> 00:09:47.106
I have a son who struggles with allergies during the spring and he diffuses it in his room every night and can sleep through the night,
253
00:09:47.266 --> 00:09:47.927
no issues.
254
00:09:48.007 --> 00:09:49.048
So that's awesome.
255
00:09:49.048 --> 00:09:49.929
It really is.
256
00:09:49.969 --> 00:09:52.751
And he doesn't have to take anything for that.
257
00:09:52.831 --> 00:09:53.272
That's great.
258
00:09:57.818 --> 00:10:00.040
So let's just jump to gut health because,
259
00:10:00.100 --> 00:10:00.560
come on,
260
00:10:00.660 --> 00:10:03.082
it is the thing right now.
261
00:10:03.242 --> 00:10:04.923
And you are ahead of the curve.
262
00:10:05.043 --> 00:10:05.323
I mean,
263
00:10:05.383 --> 00:10:08.906
you were the one talking to me about it long before Dr.
264
00:10:08.966 --> 00:10:09.706
Mark Hyman,
265
00:10:10.247 --> 00:10:10.487
you know,
266
00:10:10.567 --> 00:10:11.688
had a platform.
267
00:10:12.588 --> 00:10:14.330
And it's so interesting.
268
00:10:14.590 --> 00:10:15.871
I have to share this story.
269
00:10:16.211 --> 00:10:17.792
A friend of mine who's my age,
270
00:10:17.852 --> 00:10:18.533
59,
271
00:10:19.713 --> 00:10:21.995
is having a variety of issues.
272
00:10:22.195 --> 00:10:23.256
Every time she eats,
273
00:10:23.316 --> 00:10:26.178
she has heartburn or she gets bloated.
274
00:10:26.846 --> 00:10:27.786
And so I told her,
275
00:10:27.926 --> 00:10:28.227
I said,
276
00:10:28.267 --> 00:10:31.808
you've got to have like a gut health test.
277
00:10:31.868 --> 00:10:33.669
Is it called a stool test?
278
00:10:34.469 --> 00:10:34.709
You know,
279
00:10:34.769 --> 00:10:38.791
how we poop tells us a lot about our gut,
280
00:10:38.911 --> 00:10:39.371
how we're,
281
00:10:39.591 --> 00:10:39.871
you know,
282
00:10:40.132 --> 00:10:41.132
digesting food,
283
00:10:41.192 --> 00:10:42.573
how we're absorbing nutrients.
284
00:10:43.253 --> 00:10:46.834
And so she went to her internist last week and she said,
285
00:10:46.874 --> 00:10:47.995
what's the name of the test?
286
00:10:48.035 --> 00:10:49.235
And I responded.
287
00:10:50.056 --> 00:10:50.736
And she said,
288
00:10:50.816 --> 00:10:52.797
my doctor said she doesn't know what that is.
289
00:10:53.157 --> 00:10:53.377
Right.
290
00:10:54.418 --> 00:10:54.538
Oh,
291
00:10:54.598 --> 00:10:55.238
my goodness.
292
00:10:56.390 --> 00:10:58.972
And I know also there's a strong link to,
293
00:11:00.294 --> 00:11:00.834
of course,
294
00:11:00.894 --> 00:11:01.595
nutrition.
295
00:11:02.155 --> 00:11:04.537
I feel like hair and skin is an alarm.
296
00:11:05.098 --> 00:11:05.258
Yeah,
297
00:11:05.698 --> 00:11:05.898
for sure.
298
00:11:05.898 --> 00:11:06.799
If your hair isn't,
299
00:11:07.300 --> 00:11:07.520
you know,
300
00:11:07.660 --> 00:11:09.842
acting right or your skin isn't right,
301
00:11:09.982 --> 00:11:13.505
it's telling you there is a deeper issue that needs attention.
302
00:11:13.985 --> 00:11:14.386
I agree.
303
00:11:14.426 --> 00:11:15.126
Your skin,
304
00:11:15.307 --> 00:11:15.867
your hair,
305
00:11:16.568 --> 00:11:17.769
the whites of your eyes,
306
00:11:17.909 --> 00:11:22.153
all of that are windows into how things are going and functioning inside.
307
00:11:22.813 --> 00:11:23.414
And really.
308
00:11:25.406 --> 00:11:27.787
The engine of our bodies is our gut.
309
00:11:28.388 --> 00:11:29.468
It's our gut health.
310
00:11:29.808 --> 00:11:39.052
And the reason your friend's doctor doesn't know about some of the microbiome tests is because they haven't really hit allopathic conventional medicine yet.
311
00:11:39.432 --> 00:11:42.833
They're still in that functional integrative medicine space.
312
00:11:43.434 --> 00:11:48.436
I feel like those two areas of medicine are slowly coming together.
313
00:11:49.056 --> 00:11:51.097
I was trained in functional medicine,
314
00:11:51.137 --> 00:11:52.017
integrative medicine.
315
00:11:52.517 --> 00:11:53.738
My daughter is...
316
00:11:54.138 --> 00:11:55.919
going to medical school in July,
317
00:11:55.1000 --> 00:11:57.120
which is so exciting.
318
00:11:57.801 --> 00:12:02.624
And I'm so excited to see if she's going to learn more than,
319
00:12:03.205 --> 00:12:03.485
you know,
320
00:12:03.645 --> 00:12:05.887
her cohort did five,
321
00:12:05.927 --> 00:12:07.388
10 years ago or
322
00:12:07.848 --> 00:12:09.109
20, 30 years ago,
323
00:12:09.249 --> 00:12:18.216
because I think we are learning so much more about the microbiome and how important that bacteria is in our gut and how it affects every system in our body.
324
00:12:18.917 --> 00:12:19.497
But I just think,
325
00:12:19.537 --> 00:12:19.957
doctors,
326
00:12:20.017 --> 00:12:20.798
it's just not.
327
00:12:21.238 --> 00:12:27.320
part of their training was not part of their training and not part of their like standard knowledge base.
328
00:12:28.920 --> 00:12:34.342
If nutrition is on the forefront and you know why and what you're putting into your body,
329
00:12:35.422 --> 00:12:40.083
then you're going to understand how that can benefit your gut health.
330
00:12:40.623 --> 00:12:43.384
We have tons of microbes that live in our gut.
331
00:12:43.784 --> 00:12:47.225
We have beneficial bacteria that make nutrients.
332
00:12:47.265 --> 00:12:48.505
They make vitamins.
333
00:12:48.985 --> 00:12:50.826
Then we have some non-
334
00:12:51.126 --> 00:12:54.427
beneficial bacteria that are fine as long as they're not overgrown.
335
00:12:54.708 --> 00:12:55.888
But if they take over,
336
00:12:55.968 --> 00:13:00.830
I call them like the bullies in the school or the weeds in the garden,
337
00:13:01.250 --> 00:13:03.731
then they can kind of disrupt the balance that we need.
338
00:13:04.692 --> 00:13:09.694
We need that balance because 70 to 80 percent of our immune system lives in our gut.
339
00:13:10.394 --> 00:13:15.696
So we need to make sure that our gut is healthy because if our gut is healthy,
340
00:13:16.096 --> 00:13:18.297
then our immune systems are healthy.
341
00:13:20.598 --> 00:13:22.339
we're having digestive issues,
342
00:13:22.919 --> 00:13:27.481
then that goes back to what does our gut look like?
343
00:13:27.501 --> 00:13:29.522
And that's what these gut tests can tell us.
344
00:13:29.622 --> 00:13:31.343
I use something called the GI map,
345
00:13:31.943 --> 00:13:33.704
which is a microbiome
346
00:13:34.344 --> 00:13:38.366
PCR DNA stool test by a company called
347
00:13:38.786 --> 00:13:39.966
Diagnostic Solutions.
348
00:13:40.587 --> 00:13:42.147
And basically you give a stool sample,
349
00:13:42.548 --> 00:13:44.528
it gives us all the beneficial bacteria,
350
00:13:44.788 --> 00:13:48.150
all of the opportunistic dysbiotic bacteria.
351
00:13:48.698 --> 00:13:51.579
All of those digestive markers you mentioned,
352
00:13:51.699 --> 00:13:53.279
inflammation markers,
353
00:13:53.980 --> 00:13:55.060
there's a gluten marker.
354
00:13:55.060 --> 00:13:58.861
So there's an anti-gliadin marker to see if somebody's reacting to gluten.
355
00:13:59.541 --> 00:14:00.682
There's so much information,
356
00:14:00.882 --> 00:14:01.002
H.
357
00:14:01.022 --> 00:14:01.642
pylori,
358
00:14:01.982 --> 00:14:02.822
certain gases.
359
00:14:03.082 --> 00:14:04.503
So we can really get an overview.
360
00:14:04.883 --> 00:14:07.704
I tell my clients it's like a selfie for your gut.
361
00:14:08.564 --> 00:14:16.146
And it tells us so much information that we can actually give people strategic.
362
00:14:16.326 --> 00:14:21.387
interventions that will make a big difference in their gut health and therefore in their overall health.
363
00:14:23.028 --> 00:14:23.368
Wow.
364
00:14:24.488 --> 00:14:29.710
I don't understand why that's not the first thing they're teaching in medical school.
365
00:14:29.750 --> 00:14:30.030
I mean,
366
00:14:30.450 --> 00:14:31.370
if you have a car,
367
00:14:32.010 --> 00:14:33.831
you're going to know what fuel you're putting in it,
368
00:14:34.471 --> 00:14:34.771
right?
369
00:14:34.991 --> 00:14:36.471
And I know personally,
370
00:14:36.952 --> 00:14:38.672
I was bloated all the time.
371
00:14:39.072 --> 00:14:40.593
I had heartburn often,
372
00:14:40.653 --> 00:14:42.733
and it turned out I had something called SIBO,
373
00:14:43.753 --> 00:14:45.774
small intestinal bacterial.
374
00:14:45.954 --> 00:14:46.495
overgrowth,
375
00:14:46.616 --> 00:14:49.742
meaning that the bacteria in the,
376
00:14:49.742 --> 00:14:50.003
I guess,
377
00:14:50.023 --> 00:14:51.947
in the large intestine was
378
00:14:52.603 --> 00:14:57.086
kicking into the small intestine where it didn't belong and wreaking havoc on my system.
379
00:14:57.306 --> 00:14:57.546
Right.
380
00:14:57.827 --> 00:14:58.387
And once,
381
00:14:58.407 --> 00:14:58.627
I mean,
382
00:14:58.627 --> 00:14:59.568
it took some time,
383
00:14:59.588 --> 00:15:00.809
but once we addressed it,
384
00:15:00.849 --> 00:15:01.049
like,
385
00:15:01.269 --> 00:15:03.030
I don't have those issues anymore.
386
00:15:03.070 --> 00:15:03.611
I just thought,
387
00:15:03.711 --> 00:15:04.391
oh,
388
00:15:04.411 --> 00:15:04.852
I'm older.
389
00:15:05.272 --> 00:15:06.353
This is what happens.
390
00:15:07.613 --> 00:15:07.934
And then,
391
00:15:07.954 --> 00:15:08.654
of course,
392
00:15:09.595 --> 00:15:09.875
you know,
393
00:15:10.015 --> 00:15:11.496
all the food that we're taking in.
394
00:15:12.036 --> 00:15:12.657
Like right now,
395
00:15:13.037 --> 00:15:15.579
I decided to have no sugar,
396
00:15:16.339 --> 00:15:17.380
no processed sugar.
397
00:15:18.281 --> 00:15:20.342
I wake up with no joint pain,
398
00:15:21.043 --> 00:15:21.243
none.
399
00:15:22.091 --> 00:15:24.412
Is this something that you found with others as well?
400
00:15:24.812 --> 00:15:24.932
Oh,
401
00:15:24.972 --> 00:15:25.432
for sure.
402
00:15:25.832 --> 00:15:27.653
I do a two-week cleanse,
403
00:15:27.913 --> 00:15:28.973
seasonal cleanse program,
404
00:15:29.033 --> 00:15:30.113
which you've done before.
405
00:15:30.253 --> 00:15:31.074
You did a while ago.
406
00:15:31.574 --> 00:15:33.734
I offer it every season,
407
00:15:34.435 --> 00:15:37.155
and we really take out those inflammatory foods,
408
00:15:37.496 --> 00:15:39.596
and we see how your body reacts for two weeks.
409
00:15:39.996 --> 00:15:41.877
Not only do we take out inflammatory foods,
410
00:15:41.917 --> 00:15:45.118
we're flooding the body with very nutrient-dense foods.
411
00:15:45.658 --> 00:15:48.019
And people report the same sort of thing,
412
00:15:48.279 --> 00:15:49.159
no joint pain.
413
00:15:49.551 --> 00:15:50.472
I usually get headaches.
414
00:15:50.552 --> 00:15:51.773
I don't have my headaches.
415
00:15:52.053 --> 00:15:54.475
I have this weird rash on my back that went away.
416
00:15:54.895 --> 00:15:55.155
You know,
417
00:15:55.235 --> 00:15:56.036
I don't have,
418
00:15:56.456 --> 00:15:57.337
I sleep better.
419
00:15:57.497 --> 00:15:58.578
I have more energy.
420
00:15:58.778 --> 00:15:59.819
I don't have stomach aches.
421
00:16:00.439 --> 00:16:03.641
And there's a real connection between what we eat,
422
00:16:03.962 --> 00:16:04.182
right?
423
00:16:04.202 --> 00:16:05.383
The foods that we're putting,
424
00:16:05.383 --> 00:16:08.205
that we're feeding ourselves and the way that we feel.
425
00:16:08.985 --> 00:16:10.386
And a lot of us know this,
426
00:16:10.546 --> 00:16:10.947
I think,
427
00:16:11.547 --> 00:16:16.451
but it's another thing to then actually do something about it on a day-to-day basis.
428
00:16:17.431 --> 00:16:17.571
Well,
429
00:16:17.651 --> 00:16:18.251
we know it,
430
00:16:18.272 --> 00:16:21.133
but I don't know that we know everything we need to know.
431
00:16:21.413 --> 00:16:22.114
For example,
432
00:16:22.934 --> 00:16:26.056
organic versus conventional produce,
433
00:16:26.876 --> 00:16:27.136
right?
434
00:16:27.276 --> 00:16:31.839
The way I understand it is when it's certified organic by the,
435
00:16:31.999 --> 00:16:32.379
I guess,
436
00:16:32.519 --> 00:16:32.799
FDA,
437
00:16:33.420 --> 00:16:41.664
it means that the soil for three years prior hasn't had any pesticides used in it.
438
00:16:42.244 --> 00:16:43.105
And so I'm thinking,
439
00:16:43.885 --> 00:16:46.727
so what does conventional produce have?
440
00:16:47.187 --> 00:16:47.307
Yeah,
441
00:16:47.347 --> 00:16:47.647
I mean,
442
00:16:47.847 --> 00:16:49.088
there's pesticides.
443
00:16:51.528 --> 00:16:58.451
They're using chemicals that are killing the bugs that are messing up the fruits and vegetables.
444
00:16:58.731 --> 00:17:02.632
But they're also wreaking havoc on our internal system,
445
00:17:02.872 --> 00:17:03.432
our gut.
446
00:17:04.112 --> 00:17:07.713
There's a great resource that the Environmental Working Group comes out with,
447
00:17:07.813 --> 00:17:09.334
which I think I told you about.
448
00:17:09.734 --> 00:17:12.435
They come out with the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15.
449
00:17:12.751 --> 00:17:17.554
So the dirty dozen are those fruits and vegetables that have the highest percentage of pesticides.
450
00:17:17.994 --> 00:17:19.815
The clean 15 have the lowest.
451
00:17:20.315 --> 00:17:21.155
And during the cleanse,
452
00:17:21.155 --> 00:17:21.676
for instance,
453
00:17:21.756 --> 00:17:26.158
we use all organic because we don't want things getting,
454
00:17:26.378 --> 00:17:27.619
messing up the body,
455
00:17:28.019 --> 00:17:29.340
messing up our hormones,
456
00:17:29.420 --> 00:17:32.801
messing up our endocrine system like pesticides do.
457
00:17:33.562 --> 00:17:34.622
And a lot of my clients will say,
458
00:17:34.803 --> 00:17:35.703
is it really that important?
459
00:17:35.703 --> 00:17:36.063
important.
460
00:17:36.123 --> 00:17:43.929
And I love those resources because there's some fruits and vegetables and you don't have to buy organic because I know organic is sometimes more expensive,
461
00:17:44.809 --> 00:17:46.250
but it's an investment in your health.
462
00:17:46.931 --> 00:17:49.653
And it's an investment also in the future of our earth,
463
00:17:50.013 --> 00:17:50.753
like our soil.
464
00:17:50.773 --> 00:17:51.554
It's so much better,
465
00:17:51.914 --> 00:17:52.234
right?
466
00:17:52.334 --> 00:17:57.338
For our planet to be not putting tons and tons of chemicals.
467
00:17:57.898 --> 00:17:59.639
I just had a client tell me yesterday,
468
00:17:59.659 --> 00:18:02.041
he just got back from Europe and he said,
469
00:18:02.141 --> 00:18:03.922
I just felt so good there.
470
00:18:04.002 --> 00:18:04.683
And I was eating.
471
00:18:04.943 --> 00:18:05.864
all sorts of food.
472
00:18:06.284 --> 00:18:06.424
Yeah.
473
00:18:06.644 --> 00:18:08.385
And I just felt really good.
474
00:18:08.505 --> 00:18:12.087
And I come back here and I was still eating kind of healthfully and I just,
475
00:18:12.528 --> 00:18:14.168
all my aches and pains are back.
476
00:18:14.869 --> 00:18:15.049
Yeah.
477
00:18:24.495 --> 00:18:26.216
Foods that cause inflammation.
478
00:18:26.316 --> 00:18:27.736
What are some of those foods?
479
00:18:28.437 --> 00:18:30.078
So it's different for everyone,
480
00:18:30.158 --> 00:18:31.539
but I would say
481
00:18:32.259 --> 00:18:37.243
Some of the biggies that we find that kind of across the board can cause inflammation,
482
00:18:38.184 --> 00:18:38.644
gluten,
483
00:18:39.245 --> 00:18:39.985
that's a big one.
484
00:18:40.806 --> 00:18:42.508
Dairy is another one.
485
00:18:43.628 --> 00:18:44.209
Corn,
486
00:18:44.549 --> 00:18:44.869
soy,
487
00:18:46.411 --> 00:18:46.831
eggs.
488
00:18:48.112 --> 00:18:55.738
It's a lot of those same ones that are the top kind of allergenic foods that can also cause inflammation.
489
00:18:56.539 --> 00:19:01.163
And a lot of people may think they might have a sensitivity to one of these foods.
490
00:19:01.795 --> 00:19:02.896
but they're not sure,
491
00:19:03.236 --> 00:19:06.638
a good way to find out is to kind of take it out of your diet for a little bit,
492
00:19:06.919 --> 00:19:07.579
see how you do,
493
00:19:08.460 --> 00:19:11.962
and then bring it back in and see what happens after you do that.
494
00:19:12.402 --> 00:19:13.043
What about sugar?
495
00:19:14.524 --> 00:19:15.724
Sugar is definitely a big one.
496
00:19:15.945 --> 00:19:16.285
It's funny.
497
00:19:16.285 --> 00:19:18.747
I don't think of it because it's like a food,
498
00:19:19.007 --> 00:19:20.948
it's like an ingredient,
499
00:19:21.008 --> 00:19:21.268
right?
500
00:19:22.449 --> 00:19:23.270
It's a big one though.
501
00:19:23.430 --> 00:19:27.653
Sugar is definitely inflammatory and it's in everything.
502
00:19:27.873 --> 00:19:28.994
In everything.
503
00:19:29.194 --> 00:19:29.354
Yeah.
504
00:19:29.454 --> 00:19:31.055
My husband seems to think that
505
00:19:31.467 --> 00:19:32.448
If he's getting sick,
506
00:19:32.468 --> 00:19:33.830
he should buy Tropicana.
507
00:19:34.531 --> 00:19:36.433
And so I decided to look at it,
508
00:19:36.513 --> 00:19:37.955
the Tropicana orange juice,
509
00:19:38.115 --> 00:19:40.278
and it says serving size,
510
00:19:40.398 --> 00:19:45.184
eight ounces and 22 grams of sugar per serving.
511
00:19:45.244 --> 00:19:46.706
So I decided to find out,
512
00:19:46.726 --> 00:19:46.866
well,
513
00:19:46.866 --> 00:19:48.028
what's 22 grams?
514
00:19:48.028 --> 00:19:49.830
It's four and a half teaspoons.
515
00:19:50.491 --> 00:19:50.651
Yeah.
516
00:19:51.340 --> 00:19:53.622
All the fruit juice is super high in sugar.
517
00:19:54.222 --> 00:19:54.943
And then people are like,
518
00:19:54.963 --> 00:19:55.783
but there's vitamin C.
519
00:19:56.624 --> 00:19:56.744
Well,
520
00:19:56.764 --> 00:20:00.647
so he can eat an orange and get the fiber and the vitamin C,
521
00:20:01.127 --> 00:20:01.388
right?
522
00:20:02.168 --> 00:20:02.609
Yeah.
523
00:20:03.049 --> 00:20:04.890
There's a lot of sugar in everything.
524
00:20:04.910 --> 00:20:06.331
They just put it in everything.
525
00:20:06.371 --> 00:20:08.353
And we are a country that's addicted to sugar.
526
00:20:09.053 --> 00:20:10.054
So even in ketchup?
527
00:20:10.554 --> 00:20:11.195
It's in ketchup.
528
00:20:11.235 --> 00:20:12.356
It's in tomato sauce.
529
00:20:12.356 --> 00:20:13.076
It's in salad.
530
00:20:13.096 --> 00:20:13.957
Salad dressing.
531
00:20:14.057 --> 00:20:14.177
Oh,
532
00:20:14.217 --> 00:20:14.998
my gosh.
533
00:20:15.038 --> 00:20:16.159
It's hard.
534
00:20:16.339 --> 00:20:17.820
How long have you been off of sugar?
535
00:20:19.004 --> 00:20:19.224
Well,
536
00:20:19.324 --> 00:20:21.966
I was off of it for a long time.
537
00:20:22.206 --> 00:20:22.746
And then
538
00:20:23.447 --> 00:20:25.428
I don't know why this year in the holidays,
539
00:20:25.468 --> 00:20:26.529
I just went for it.
540
00:20:27.349 --> 00:20:29.390
And I'm back to being off of it again.
541
00:20:29.470 --> 00:20:29.710
I mean,
542
00:20:29.810 --> 00:20:30.651
I know this.
543
00:20:30.771 --> 00:20:31.251
I know.
544
00:20:32.452 --> 00:20:33.172
Yet they say,
545
00:20:33.272 --> 00:20:34.053
and it's true,
546
00:20:34.393 --> 00:20:36.014
it's more addictive than cocaine.
547
00:20:36.114 --> 00:20:37.035
It really is.
548
00:20:37.575 --> 00:20:39.796
Are there healthy ways that we can sweeten?
549
00:20:41.017 --> 00:20:41.577
There are.
550
00:20:41.878 --> 00:20:42.138
You know,
551
00:20:43.178 --> 00:20:45.860
if you know you are addicted to sugar,
552
00:20:46.420 --> 00:20:47.980
then sugar is sugar is sugar.
553
00:20:48.081 --> 00:20:50.181
So even if you're using raw honey,
554
00:20:50.281 --> 00:20:50.921
for instance,
555
00:20:51.021 --> 00:20:53.202
which has a lot of health benefits,
556
00:20:53.562 --> 00:20:56.163
there's enzymes in there that are antimicrobial,
557
00:20:56.303 --> 00:20:57.163
antibacterial,
558
00:20:57.283 --> 00:20:57.883
antiviral,
559
00:20:58.423 --> 00:20:59.404
but it's still sweet.
560
00:20:59.744 --> 00:21:03.225
So if it triggers you to have more and more sweet,
561
00:21:04.805 --> 00:21:06.025
then that could be a problem.
562
00:21:06.666 --> 00:21:10.307
But if you can kind of just have a little bit and be okay with it,
563
00:21:10.327 --> 00:21:12.707
I think the natural sugars are a better choice.
564
00:21:12.827 --> 00:21:13.848
So your raw honey,
565
00:21:14.528 --> 00:21:15.568
your maple syrup.
566
00:21:16.248 --> 00:21:17.488
Your coconut sugar,
567
00:21:17.768 --> 00:21:22.490
that's shown to be lower glycemic than like regular brown sugar or white sugar.
568
00:21:23.430 --> 00:21:23.930
What else?
569
00:21:24.730 --> 00:21:25.531
How about date?
570
00:21:25.971 --> 00:21:26.171
Yep,
571
00:21:26.331 --> 00:21:26.971
dates.
572
00:21:27.631 --> 00:21:28.611
Dates are a great thing.
573
00:21:28.631 --> 00:21:30.652
I throw dates in my smoothie sometimes.
574
00:21:30.992 --> 00:21:32.592
And now there's stevia and monk fruit,
575
00:21:33.153 --> 00:21:33.693
which are,
576
00:21:34.433 --> 00:21:34.673
you know,
577
00:21:34.913 --> 00:21:36.594
non-nutritive sweeteners,
578
00:21:36.714 --> 00:21:38.434
but I think healthier.
579
00:21:38.714 --> 00:21:42.555
And the research shows healthier than aspartame,
580
00:21:42.695 --> 00:21:43.315
saccharin,
581
00:21:43.595 --> 00:21:44.356
sucralose,
582
00:21:44.516 --> 00:21:45.296
all of those.
583
00:21:45.856 --> 00:21:47.717
non-nutritive sweeteners that we grew up,
584
00:21:48.298 --> 00:21:48.538
you know,
585
00:21:48.638 --> 00:21:49.479
we're about the same age.
586
00:21:49.539 --> 00:21:51.900
We grew up with those and people thought those were healthy.
587
00:21:53.281 --> 00:21:56.824
And so the key then is to reduce.
588
00:21:57.364 --> 00:21:59.405
But when you are going to have it,
589
00:22:00.086 --> 00:22:01.467
make one of these choices.
590
00:22:01.567 --> 00:22:02.668
Or if you're baking,
591
00:22:03.108 --> 00:22:09.552
use maybe a smaller amount of whether it's organic maple syrup or the coconut sugar.
592
00:22:10.573 --> 00:22:14.716
And dark chocolate is like a superfood,
593
00:22:14.776 --> 00:22:15.036
right?
594
00:22:15.384 --> 00:22:15.544
Yeah,
595
00:22:15.564 --> 00:22:18.627
so cacao is super high in magnesium.
596
00:22:19.267 --> 00:22:22.010
And dark chocolate has a higher percentage of cacao in it.
597
00:22:22.450 --> 00:22:22.870
So yeah,
598
00:22:23.311 --> 00:22:26.433
I have worked with clients who say,
599
00:22:26.473 --> 00:22:27.835
I only like milk chocolate.
600
00:22:27.835 --> 00:22:32.358
I've worked with them to try to like switch to dark chocolate just because of the health benefits.
601
00:22:33.039 --> 00:22:35.661
And nine times out of 10,
602
00:22:35.961 --> 00:22:37.222
like they learn to love it.
603
00:22:37.763 --> 00:22:38.123
But again,
604
00:22:38.123 --> 00:22:39.544
if chocolate's like a problem for you,
605
00:22:39.544 --> 00:22:40.225
if you can't,
606
00:22:40.305 --> 00:22:43.648
if you have to eat a whole bar of chocolate and not just a couple squares.
607
00:22:44.164 --> 00:22:46.606
then you might have to eliminate it.
608
00:22:46.666 --> 00:22:46.906
You know,
609
00:22:47.666 --> 00:22:49.788
we say that moderation is the key to everything.
610
00:22:49.868 --> 00:22:51.469
Some people can't do that with sugar.
611
00:22:51.829 --> 00:22:52.990
If you can do that,
612
00:22:53.390 --> 00:22:53.771
that is,
613
00:22:54.411 --> 00:22:54.751
I think,
614
00:22:54.791 --> 00:22:58.794
a good place to be because there is kind of sugar in the world.
615
00:22:59.254 --> 00:23:00.675
But if you need some time to just,
616
00:23:01.036 --> 00:23:01.276
you know,
617
00:23:01.616 --> 00:23:06.1000
put it on a shelf and not touch it for a little bit to get your body accustomed to not having it,
618
00:23:07.100 --> 00:23:08.681
then that's probably the best thing.
619
00:23:08.681 --> 00:23:10.582
Yeah,
620
00:23:10.682 --> 00:23:11.303
and personally,
621
00:23:11.463 --> 00:23:13.084
you mentioned several things where
622
00:23:13.372 --> 00:23:13.612
you know,
623
00:23:13.672 --> 00:23:14.633
people felt better,
624
00:23:14.773 --> 00:23:15.954
like sleeping better,
625
00:23:16.054 --> 00:23:17.455
but also waking up better,
626
00:23:18.296 --> 00:23:19.657
having a clearer mind,
627
00:23:19.697 --> 00:23:20.718
that brain fog.
628
00:23:21.258 --> 00:23:22.560
And for a while I just thought,
629
00:23:22.640 --> 00:23:23.060
again,
630
00:23:23.240 --> 00:23:24.621
it's age related.
631
00:23:24.881 --> 00:23:26.523
And come to find out,
632
00:23:26.523 --> 00:23:26.803
it's like,
633
00:23:26.823 --> 00:23:26.943
no,
634
00:23:27.223 --> 00:23:29.285
we can actually feel much better.
635
00:23:29.605 --> 00:23:29.725
Oh,
636
00:23:29.825 --> 00:23:30.846
so many people say that.
637
00:23:30.906 --> 00:23:31.026
Oh,
638
00:23:31.026 --> 00:23:32.107
it's just age or,
639
00:23:32.408 --> 00:23:32.528
oh,
640
00:23:32.588 --> 00:23:33.268
my family,
641
00:23:33.609 --> 00:23:34.229
we just have,
642
00:23:34.449 --> 00:23:36.391
we have very sensitive stomachs.
643
00:23:36.471 --> 00:23:36.871
It's just,
644
00:23:36.951 --> 00:23:37.692
it's genetic.
645
00:23:38.673 --> 00:23:42.156
And there are some real genetic markers.
646
00:23:42.196 --> 00:23:42.496
I mean,
647
00:23:42.928 --> 00:23:43.168
You know,
648
00:23:43.288 --> 00:23:44.349
celiac is one of them.
649
00:23:44.409 --> 00:23:45.450
I have celiac disease.
650
00:23:45.450 --> 00:23:47.011
My daughter has celiac disease.
651
00:23:47.372 --> 00:23:48.633
We have the gene for that.
652
00:23:48.893 --> 00:23:50.374
The gene has expressed itself.
653
00:23:50.534 --> 00:23:51.235
We have celiac.
654
00:23:51.315 --> 00:23:52.176
We can't change that.
655
00:23:52.956 --> 00:23:56.399
But we can make our guts as healthy as it can,
656
00:23:56.539 --> 00:23:58.320
even with this autoimmune condition.
657
00:23:59.001 --> 00:24:01.443
So I had a mother-daughter that I'm working with who,
658
00:24:01.943 --> 00:24:02.204
you know,
659
00:24:02.244 --> 00:24:02.864
they're just like,
660
00:24:02.904 --> 00:24:03.204
oh,
661
00:24:03.905 --> 00:24:05.186
this is just our stomach.
662
00:24:05.546 --> 00:24:06.887
But we've done the GI map.
663
00:24:06.987 --> 00:24:08.289
Turns out they both had SIBO,
664
00:24:08.549 --> 00:24:09.349
like you mentioned.
665
00:24:09.590 --> 00:24:10.590
We're treating the SIBO.
666
00:24:10.931 --> 00:24:12.512
They're already feeling so much.
667
00:24:12.652 --> 00:24:12.972
better.
668
00:24:14.133 --> 00:24:14.433
I mean,
669
00:24:14.633 --> 00:24:15.173
definitely.
670
00:24:15.354 --> 00:24:17.114
And when we did your cleanse,
671
00:24:17.635 --> 00:24:24.559
I was so excited because I learned so many new recipes as well that didn't involve meat.
672
00:24:25.239 --> 00:24:25.439
Yes,
673
00:24:25.519 --> 00:24:26.199
it's all vegan.
674
00:24:26.860 --> 00:24:27.380
But again,
675
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:29.001
that brain fog was gone.
676
00:24:29.521 --> 00:24:34.144
That's one of the major things people say after the cleanse is the brain fog is gone.
677
00:24:34.744 --> 00:24:36.805
And I think that's related to inflammation.
678
00:24:37.546 --> 00:24:39.827
I think it's those processed foods.
679
00:24:39.827 --> 00:24:41.728
We don't eat processed foods on the cleanse.
680
00:24:42.492 --> 00:24:43.515
So we don't eat meat.
681
00:24:44.137 --> 00:24:45.020
I love meat.
682
00:24:45.100 --> 00:24:46.344
I eat meat all the time.
683
00:24:46.404 --> 00:24:47.247
But for the cleanse,
684
00:24:47.247 --> 00:24:48.250
for the two weeks...
685
00:24:48.722 --> 00:24:57.488
I don't do it because it's a little bit harder to digest and the cleanse is a time to give your liver just a break and to give your digestion a little bit of a break.
686
00:24:58.068 --> 00:24:59.789
And so we're just giving it,
687
00:24:59.929 --> 00:25:00.229
you know,
688
00:25:00.590 --> 00:25:01.890
whole foods,
689
00:25:02.771 --> 00:25:03.331
nuts,
690
00:25:03.351 --> 00:25:03.932
seeds,
691
00:25:04.152 --> 00:25:04.812
plants,
692
00:25:05.673 --> 00:25:06.433
legumes.
693
00:25:07.174 --> 00:25:08.875
We're laying off the sugar,
694
00:25:09.075 --> 00:25:09.755
the dairy,
695
00:25:09.855 --> 00:25:10.476
the gluten,
696
00:25:10.816 --> 00:25:11.877
those like high,
697
00:25:12.137 --> 00:25:13.698
more highly inflammatory foods.
698
00:25:14.162 --> 00:25:14.302
Yeah,
699
00:25:14.382 --> 00:25:16.183
I've learned so much doing that cleanse.
700
00:25:16.203 --> 00:25:18.565
I really strongly recommend it for everyone.
701
00:25:28.630 --> 00:25:28.830
Lori,
702
00:25:28.910 --> 00:25:39.916
tell me some of your favorite magic potions or gems that people should know about that are around us that we could use in our day-to-day to improve the quality of our lives.
703
00:25:40.197 --> 00:25:40.337
Well,
704
00:25:40.397 --> 00:25:42.638
for our gut and our liver.
705
00:25:43.334 --> 00:25:44.955
I always come back to greens.
706
00:25:45.476 --> 00:25:47.217
I remember when you and I worked together,
707
00:25:47.758 --> 00:25:54.243
one of the things you were so fascinated with is all the greens that you had never put in your grocery cart before.
708
00:25:54.383 --> 00:25:54.563
Yeah.
709
00:25:54.803 --> 00:25:55.044
Right.
710
00:25:55.104 --> 00:25:58.546
And now are probably vegetables that you have all the time.
711
00:25:59.087 --> 00:26:06.313
Things like Swiss chard and bok choy and leeks and mustard greens and cabbage.
712
00:26:06.313 --> 00:26:06.533
You know,
713
00:26:06.673 --> 00:26:08.414
all of these things have,
714
00:26:08.875 --> 00:26:12.958
all of these vegetables are plant fibers that feed the beneficial bacteria.
715
00:26:12.958 --> 00:26:13.999
bacteria in the gut.
716
00:26:14.579 --> 00:26:16.200
So they're prebiotics,
717
00:26:16.260 --> 00:26:16.520
right?
718
00:26:17.080 --> 00:26:19.021
They feed the beneficial bacteria.
719
00:26:19.482 --> 00:26:24.304
So we want to constantly be giving our bodies,
720
00:26:24.364 --> 00:26:24.945
our guts,
721
00:26:25.405 --> 00:26:25.685
you know,
722
00:26:26.125 --> 00:26:32.109
fueling ourselves with these very vitamin-rich prebiotic fibers.
723
00:26:33.069 --> 00:26:34.050
And the more colors,
724
00:26:34.110 --> 00:26:34.530
the better.
725
00:26:34.690 --> 00:26:35.611
The more colors,
726
00:26:35.651 --> 00:26:36.011
the better,
727
00:26:36.071 --> 00:26:36.231
right?
728
00:26:36.231 --> 00:26:39.753
Because each color has different phytonutrients in them,
729
00:26:39.893 --> 00:26:41.294
different antioxidants.
730
00:26:41.610 --> 00:26:43.291
that feed the cells in different ways.
731
00:26:43.912 --> 00:26:46.634
So I always say for vegetables,
732
00:26:46.694 --> 00:26:49.496
think of diversity and think of abundance.
733
00:26:49.877 --> 00:26:50.717
For a long time,
734
00:26:50.818 --> 00:26:54.100
I simply started my day with lemon water.
735
00:26:54.801 --> 00:26:55.762
What do you think of that?
736
00:26:56.162 --> 00:26:58.144
So that's one of the things we do on the cleanse.
737
00:26:58.844 --> 00:27:00.085
Lemons are very,
738
00:27:00.626 --> 00:27:02.907
even though you think of them as acidic,
739
00:27:02.987 --> 00:27:06.690
they're very alkaline for the body and they're very supportive for liver health.
740
00:27:06.871 --> 00:27:10.133
And so what they do is they prime the body for digestion.
741
00:27:10.514 --> 00:27:10.974
They help
742
00:27:11.094 --> 00:27:13.976
the body to get ready to produce stomach acid,
743
00:27:14.016 --> 00:27:15.256
which breaks down our food,
744
00:27:15.317 --> 00:27:18.478
which helps our food go down the digestive tract.
745
00:27:19.079 --> 00:27:21.080
So that's a great way to start your day,
746
00:27:21.400 --> 00:27:22.241
start a meal.
747
00:27:22.721 --> 00:27:24.682
It also has tons of vitamin C in it,
748
00:27:25.122 --> 00:27:30.486
which we all in this very stressful world are constantly just burning through our vitamin C.
749
00:27:31.186 --> 00:27:35.148
So giving ourselves more vitamin C is always beneficial.
750
00:27:35.408 --> 00:27:37.950
So there's so many good reasons to start your day like that.
751
00:27:38.178 --> 00:27:41.760
So I do that sometimes even after the cleanse that that kind of sticks.
752
00:27:42.821 --> 00:27:43.041
Yeah.
753
00:27:43.921 --> 00:27:45.983
And what about as far as supplements?
754
00:27:46.083 --> 00:27:46.363
What are,
755
00:27:46.483 --> 00:27:46.723
you know,
756
00:27:46.743 --> 00:27:50.365
I know it's by person and it's individual,
757
00:27:51.006 --> 00:27:56.389
but what are some general supplements that are kind of good for everybody to take?
758
00:27:56.869 --> 00:28:01.292
I think a broad spectrum probiotic is a really good idea.
759
00:28:02.052 --> 00:28:02.853
For a while,
760
00:28:03.033 --> 00:28:03.413
I think,
761
00:28:03.893 --> 00:28:04.133
you know,
762
00:28:04.354 --> 00:28:04.894
we were like.
763
00:28:05.534 --> 00:28:06.475
What are probiotics?
764
00:28:06.495 --> 00:28:07.936
Should we be taking probiotics?
765
00:28:08.056 --> 00:28:09.657
And I don't think they're make or break.
766
00:28:10.117 --> 00:28:16.842
I don't think that you've had chronic stomach issues by taking one probiotic is going to move the needle.
767
00:28:17.302 --> 00:28:19.664
But it's part of the whole picture.
768
00:28:20.164 --> 00:28:22.045
Many of us are deficient in vitamin D.
769
00:28:22.405 --> 00:28:24.947
It's really hard to get vitamin D from foods.
770
00:28:25.728 --> 00:28:27.129
Mushrooms have vitamin D.
771
00:28:27.629 --> 00:28:28.770
Egg yolks have vitamin D.
772
00:28:29.550 --> 00:28:32.973
But it's not easy to get from foods.
773
00:28:33.113 --> 00:28:34.754
It's also not easy to get from...
774
00:28:35.114 --> 00:28:37.115
sunlight if you live north of the equator.
775
00:28:37.816 --> 00:28:41.037
So I think taking a vitamin D supplement is always a good idea.
776
00:28:41.277 --> 00:28:51.303
And I will ask clients to ask their doctors or I can send them a script to know what their vitamin D levels are because then we know how much to dose.
777
00:28:51.983 --> 00:28:54.384
Optimal is really between 60 and 80.
778
00:28:55.065 --> 00:28:56.406
But normal vitamin D,
779
00:28:56.746 --> 00:28:58.427
if you just look on labs,
780
00:28:58.487 --> 00:29:00.007
will say 30 to 80.
781
00:29:00.808 --> 00:29:02.229
But we know that 30 is not,
782
00:29:02.569 --> 00:29:02.729
yeah,
783
00:29:02.729 --> 00:29:03.830
it might be normal,
784
00:29:03.950 --> 00:29:04.670
but it's not optimal.
785
00:29:05.210 --> 00:29:08.072
And vitamin D is so crucial for bone health,
786
00:29:08.193 --> 00:29:09.534
immune system health.
787
00:29:09.594 --> 00:29:13.757
It's a cofactor for so many other vitamins like calcium and K.
788
00:29:14.637 --> 00:29:16.999
So we need good vitamin D.
789
00:29:17.339 --> 00:29:20.762
We learned that kind of through COVID and the whole pandemic era.
790
00:29:21.242 --> 00:29:21.362
Now,
791
00:29:21.402 --> 00:29:23.524
is that vitamin D3 specifically?
792
00:29:23.544 --> 00:29:23.724
Yeah,
793
00:29:23.824 --> 00:29:23.944
D3.
794
00:29:24.124 --> 00:29:25.305
And does it need to have,
795
00:29:25.405 --> 00:29:27.867
is it K with it in order to be absorbed?
796
00:29:28.027 --> 00:29:29.188
Not necessarily.
797
00:29:29.908 --> 00:29:32.070
Some of the research does say that
798
00:29:32.230 --> 00:29:36.415
D combined with K has a more synergistic effect and is better absorbed.
799
00:29:36.816 --> 00:29:41.923
But I've seen both personally and with my clients moving the needle with just doing a D3.
800
00:29:43.745 --> 00:29:44.626
What about calcium?
801
00:29:44.746 --> 00:29:47.550
I think it's better to get your calcium through food.
802
00:29:48.350 --> 00:29:48.871
And I think,
803
00:29:48.931 --> 00:29:49.232
you know,
804
00:29:49.833 --> 00:29:50.795
when I was growing up,
805
00:29:51.036 --> 00:29:51.617
I remember,
806
00:29:52.057 --> 00:29:52.278
you know,
807
00:29:52.358 --> 00:29:52.999
drink your milk.
808
00:29:53.220 --> 00:29:54.462
That's how you get your calcium.
809
00:29:54.923 --> 00:29:55.865
It's all in the dairy.
810
00:29:56.564 --> 00:29:56.824
And
811
00:29:57.305 --> 00:29:59.306
I don't think that's necessarily true.
812
00:29:59.707 --> 00:30:01.528
There is a lot of calcium in dairy,
813
00:30:01.588 --> 00:30:02.129
but it's not
814
00:30:02.749 --> 00:30:04.230
100% absorbable.
815
00:30:04.651 --> 00:30:13.138
So we know that our beans and our greens have a higher rate of absorption and a nice amount of calcium.
816
00:30:13.398 --> 00:30:21.284
So if you are vegan or if you are trying to avoid dairy or if you have a sensitivity to dairy,
817
00:30:21.524 --> 00:30:23.626
there are definitely ways you can still get your calcium.
818
00:30:24.427 --> 00:30:25.307
Sesame seeds,
819
00:30:25.608 --> 00:30:25.788
too.
820
00:30:26.052 --> 00:30:28.634
Tahini and sesame seeds is another great way to get calcium.
821
00:30:29.115 --> 00:30:29.455
What else?
822
00:30:29.475 --> 00:30:30.256
Magnesium,
823
00:30:30.776 --> 00:30:32.217
I will often recommend,
824
00:30:32.718 --> 00:30:35.420
especially if somebody tells me they're a little bit,
825
00:30:35.620 --> 00:30:35.920
you know,
826
00:30:36.341 --> 00:30:36.861
backed up,
827
00:30:36.941 --> 00:30:37.822
constipated,
828
00:30:37.982 --> 00:30:40.164
or their sleep is a little bit wonky.
829
00:30:40.725 --> 00:30:43.587
Magnesium can be very effective for both of those,
830
00:30:43.627 --> 00:30:46.309
for motility and for restful,
831
00:30:46.389 --> 00:30:47.050
calm sleep.
832
00:30:47.570 --> 00:30:48.851
But with every client,
833
00:30:49.172 --> 00:30:54.076
I will kind of figure out what might be missing.
834
00:30:54.456 --> 00:30:56.697
And then try to either food first,
835
00:30:56.857 --> 00:30:58.237
always food first approach.
836
00:30:58.257 --> 00:31:00.278
But when we can't get enough through food,
837
00:31:00.398 --> 00:31:01.298
look at supplements.
838
00:31:02.278 --> 00:31:06.479
So we're here and we have a stage.
839
00:31:07.420 --> 00:31:14.862
If there is one thing you could say to people to start taking their health more seriously,
840
00:31:15.982 --> 00:31:18.123
what would that one thing be?
841
00:31:19.223 --> 00:31:22.404
I think I would say what.
842
00:31:23.968 --> 00:31:26.389
Choices you make day to day,
843
00:31:27.749 --> 00:31:33.791
what you decide to put in your body can truly affect your health.
844
00:31:35.431 --> 00:31:39.892
So your day to day choices can have a huge impact on your health.
845
00:31:40.432 --> 00:31:40.673
Yeah,
846
00:31:40.673 --> 00:31:41.133
I'm even,
847
00:31:41.413 --> 00:31:41.653
you know,
848
00:31:41.773 --> 00:31:43.353
hearing even mental health.
849
00:31:43.733 --> 00:31:43.913
Oh,
850
00:31:44.354 --> 00:31:44.714
oh yeah,
851
00:31:45.274 --> 00:31:45.814
for sure.
852
00:31:46.014 --> 00:31:53.136
There's so much information we're learning about how neurotransmitters that are made in the gut.
853
00:31:53.732 --> 00:31:53.932
right,
854
00:31:53.972 --> 00:31:58.394
are affected by how robust or how weak that gut health is.
855
00:31:59.174 --> 00:32:00.615
So that is super important.
856
00:32:01.295 --> 00:32:10.399
And I get that there is just so much information that's kind of out in the world about the supplements and about,
857
00:32:10.579 --> 00:32:10.819
you know,
858
00:32:11.180 --> 00:32:12.160
food choices.
859
00:32:12.900 --> 00:32:14.681
And it's just a lot of noise.
860
00:32:15.241 --> 00:32:21.304
And I kind of see my role and my job as helping clients filter through that noise.
861
00:32:22.360 --> 00:32:23.800
Because a lot of that stuff is true.
862
00:32:23.960 --> 00:32:25.141
A lot of it is very valid.
863
00:32:25.481 --> 00:32:26.641
But I help people figure out,
864
00:32:26.661 --> 00:32:26.821
okay,
865
00:32:26.881 --> 00:32:27.782
what is true for you?
866
00:32:29.022 --> 00:32:32.143
I don't think this is the last podcast we're going to do together.
867
00:32:32.203 --> 00:32:34.063
I know there is so much more to say.
868
00:32:34.103 --> 00:32:38.925
And every time you come in to the salon where we're supposed to take care of you,
869
00:32:39.085 --> 00:32:45.947
I feel that we get so much information and helpful information for us and how we can better live our lives.
870
00:32:46.587 --> 00:32:50.588
I love how you're always soaking up everything that I say.
871
00:32:51.652 --> 00:32:54.874
Just so inquisitive and curious because that's what it's all about.
872
00:32:55.034 --> 00:32:58.637
It's staying curious and wanting to learn more and more about how,
873
00:32:59.397 --> 00:32:59.678
you know,
874
00:32:59.918 --> 00:33:01.759
to live the healthiest life we can.
875
00:33:02.419 --> 00:33:02.539
So,
876
00:33:02.640 --> 00:33:02.860
Lori,
877
00:33:03.220 --> 00:33:04.341
where can people find you?
878
00:33:05.421 --> 00:33:07.123
They can find me on my website,
879
00:33:07.243 --> 00:33:08.924
healthyheartbeat.com.
880
00:33:09.504 --> 00:33:10.645
It is like the beet,
881
00:33:10.845 --> 00:33:11.806
like the vegetable beet,
882
00:33:11.866 --> 00:33:12.306
B-E-E-T.
883
00:33:12.926 --> 00:33:15.108
I'm on Instagram at healthyheartbeat.
884
00:33:15.568 --> 00:33:16.529
That's where you can find me.
885
00:33:16.949 --> 00:33:18.130
That's my happy place.
886
00:33:19.271 --> 00:33:21.012
Thank you so much for being here.
