If you are or care for a survivor of sexual assault you are not alone.
In the US, survivors can access medical care (including STI prevention, emergency contraception, and more) as well as examination (including ‘rape kit’ evidence collection) free of charge with or without reporting an incident to the police.
While having an examination as soon as possible after an assault increases chances of successful collection of DNA evidence, evidence can be collected even days after an assault and after the survivor has showered. Evidence can be collected whether or not you plan to make a police report, and the decision about filing a report can be made later.
To find resources near you, call your local sexual assault advocacy helpline or contact RAINN anonymously over the phone (800)656-4673 or internet for help.https://rainn.org/help-and-healing/hotline/
Many advocacy groups provide a variety of resources including hospital advocacy, therapy, support groups, legal advice, safety relocation, and more!
