We readily champion the gift of prophecy when it comforts our sorrow or confirms our doctrines, but we resist it when it demands costly change. Fascinated by future predictions that require nothing of us, we bypass the real work of prophetic speech: edifying faith, confronting compromise, and equipping believers for active service rather than passive spectatorhood. A prophetic voice that creates dependency on an indispensable messenger has failed its mandate. Defending the gift is useless if it does not produce personal repentance, genuine endurance, and the compassionate character of Jesus.
