00:00:00
Speaker 1: 13, 14, past, I'm comedy center B, legendary Mark Rosen is here. Left here by my owners after 10 loyal years, having no family is just one of my fears. Well, I see Mark again when it starts to get cold. I feel so lonely and I'm starting to get old. I wish he'd come back to see me again. All I want in this life is just one loyal friend.
00:00:31
Speaker 2: William.
00:00:33
Speaker 3: Shakespeare. Power trip bets.
00:00:36
Speaker 2: Take this.
00:00:37
Speaker 1: What are the odds that Mark Rosen, once the temperature falls below 32 degrees, will continue to take that dog for a walk?
00:00:42
Speaker 4: Well, 100%. If that dog made me another dog. I'm going to be there at 315 today.
00:00:48
Speaker 2: It's 75 degrees at 315 today when it's 10 above. I'll be there.
00:00:51
Speaker 4: Bet, bet, bet, bet.
00:01:01
Speaker 3: How am I going to know?
00:01:03
Speaker 2: I'll take pictures.
00:01:05
Speaker 3: There's AI.
00:01:06
Speaker 2: I don't even know how to do AI.
00:01:08
Speaker 3: Well, somebody could do it for you to win.
00:01:09
Speaker 2: No, no, no.
00:01:11
Speaker 4: First of all, the whole thing, and I love being the butt of jokes because this is what people at this station live for.
00:01:18
Speaker 3: Why do we do that?
00:01:19
Speaker 2: Because, you know, you reach a certain status in your career.
00:01:22
Speaker 4: Well, that's it.
00:01:23
Speaker 3: They pick on you because they're envious and jealous.
00:01:24
Speaker 2: Well, because they have nothing else going on in their life. That's correct. But that's okay.
00:01:28
Speaker 4: But my whole point of doing this, obviously there's some enjoyment, and I'm not, nor will I ever be a dog owner, but I'm trying to shine a light, if I can, on the, in this case, the Golden Valley Humane Society.
00:01:42
Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be that one.
00:01:44
Speaker 4: But I know they have, I think, the big adoption month coming up, and whatever I can do to help get people interested and stopping over. And in particular, some of these dogs, like Bear, Um, that had been there. I mean, it's, it breaks your heart. I mean, bear was, you know, and I don't know the reasons why, uh, was with the same owner for 10 years and they decided whether it's financial or medical or whatever the case may be to give them up. So he said over there in that kennel after 10 years of being in a cozy little couch and his own bed and treats and running around the backyard. And it's, it's heartbreaking for a little dog. He's like, and then he's little, he's, he is kind of a little dog, but, um, I don't know.
00:02:27
Speaker 2: He's a mutt. He's, It's a combination of whatever.
00:02:30
Speaker 4: So I hope I could just encourage people to stop over when they have the opportunity. There's plenty of pets to be rescued, rescue animals in particular that are out there. You don't have to go through a breeder. There's things you can do.
00:02:44
Speaker 1: Common, if you had to bet your entire life savings on one of these two things actually happening, which would you pick? Deuce winning spread swing or Rosie actually walking the dog in the snow?
00:02:54
Speaker 3: Choose wisely. Your financial future depends on that. I would take deuce, winning, spread, swing. I don't think once it snows, you'll go to the.
00:03:01
Speaker 2: I like the snow. The snow, I mean, you're talking about the cold.
00:03:04
Speaker 3: And then think about it. It's going to be 10 degrees above zero, and the dog's going to.
00:03:07
Speaker 2: The dog's probably not going to want to be out there more than me.
00:03:09
Speaker 4: Oh, no.
00:03:09
Speaker 3: Dogs love being out there.
00:03:10
Speaker 2: Well, I'll be out there. And then the dog will.
00:03:12
Speaker 1: Then he's got to take that plastic baggie out of his back pocket.
00:03:17
Speaker 2: Oh, man.
00:03:18
Speaker 4: I did that the other day. First day, I took him outside. That's what he did.
00:03:21
Speaker 3: Frozen concrete. You're not going to do it. I can just tell.
00:03:25
Speaker 2: All right. Well, I know. I'll do what I can.
00:03:30
Speaker 3: Your Wolves team last night.
00:03:31
Speaker 2: Told you.
00:03:32
Speaker 1: Yeah. They were, that's the best backcourt ever assembled in the history of the National Basketball Association.
00:03:39
Speaker 2: That's a bit of an overstatement, but that's what you're prone to do.
00:03:42
Speaker 3: They toyed with the Miami Heat last night. They taunted the Miami Heat last night. They trash talked the Miami Heat last night.
00:03:48
Speaker 2: They certainly did.
00:03:49
Speaker 1: To the point where I didn't see them, but a basketball friend of mine told me that Antetokounmpo was basically just ripping himself and the entire team.
00:04:00
Speaker 3: It was his first game of the season already. We're not trying. We have a lack of efforts at the first game of the season.
00:04:06
Speaker 1: They had no interest in playing defense.
00:04:09
Speaker 3: None at all.
00:04:10
Speaker 4: As Deuce was leaving the building, I can tell you right now, he could dribble circles around Klay Thompson. When they say Klay, I think his first name is spelled C-L-A-Y.
00:04:19
Speaker 2: Wait, hold on.
00:04:20
Speaker 3: He can shoot.
00:04:23
Speaker 2: If he's open.
00:04:24
Speaker 4: He can still knock down three-pointers, but he can't move laterally. He certainly can't guard 24-year-old superstars, or he can't guard the likes of LaBella or Ant in his wildest dreams.
00:04:37
Speaker 2: And that's just an indication of where they are.
00:04:38
Speaker 4: And listen, I've watched the Wolves play better basketball games, certainly more meaningful basketball games, as we know, in playoff time. I can't recall ever watching a team that was more fun to watch than last night's game. And I mean, because of the joy they played with, the style that they played with, frenetic kind of up and down, and yet still playing good defense, especially as the game wore on, and just took it to them. And again, I'm not going to extrapolate numbers from what happened last night and go, what?
00:05:11
Speaker 2: This is the way it's going to be? They may lose at Orlando tomorrow night. but well, they could. Yeah.
00:05:16
Speaker 1: I mean, well, if they do, then, then, then I'm going to be back where I am with all the time.
00:05:20
Speaker 4: This is what I warned you about yesterday. I said, if I, if whatever happens tonight, this was yesterday.
00:05:25
Speaker 1: No, but no, what I'm saying is, but if you, if, if you're a better team and you really are sure you don't go to Orlando and get Orlando, not any, Orlando.
00:05:33
Speaker 3: Is an awful basketball.
00:05:34
Speaker 2: They're not awful.
00:05:37
Speaker 3: Oh, compared to what the wolves are supposed to be.
00:05:38
Speaker 4: Well, and maybe, you know, I don't know. I haven't looked at the point spread for tomorrow night, Orlando. I think, um, I don't know what they did in their opening game. But the point of the matter is, it's still going to be a crazy up and down season. I still think the Wolves are capable of winning 50-plus games, and that's the whole point, is putting yourself in position and just staying healthy and having fun.
00:06:01
Speaker 2: They played with a lot of joy last night. Obviously, Edwards was, you could see the, I mean, tell me what, joy.
00:06:07
Speaker 4: I mean, the fact that he didn't have to bring the ball up and that he got Lonzo Ball. I don't think Edwards shot a free throw until the fourth quarter. I might be mistaken, but He ended up pouring in 45. I think he made four free throws. That was near the end. He made nine three-pointers. A lot of open looks. A lot of ones that were challenging. Ball set him up. He had six assists. Kaminga looked good in his first game. I didn't realize that Finch has got kind of an affection for this Lyles veteran who came off the bench.
00:06:42
Speaker 3: Who doesn't?
00:06:43
Speaker 2: First player off the bench. I went, wait a minute. Who is this guy? I don't think he even played in the NBA last year.
00:06:48
Speaker 3: Hell of a player.
00:06:49
Speaker 2: You don't know anything about him. I don't know either. But some of the usual.
00:06:53
Speaker 4: I mean, it was good to see Terrence Shannon be more aggressive than ever. Than ever? The one who was disappointing last night in his 14 minutes we talked about was Baron Jay. He looked out of sorts. And I don't care if he didn't score. I mean, he either did go bare.
00:07:10
Speaker 2: I don't think he didn't score a field goal. He made some free throws.
00:07:13
Speaker 4: But still, Gobert had a pretty big impact defensively, where Berenger was pretty skittish out there. And that's, you know, again, it's going to take him more time, I think, to kind of figure that out if you're going against him.
00:07:24
Speaker 2: You like this club, don't you? I love this club.
00:07:27
Speaker 4: I mean, I love the way they played last night, even if they lose games like that. I mean, I think the style is so appealing to fans. You know, as you like to say, I mean, and I hate to point the fingers because Randall had a, Julius Randall, even though they lost last night, had a terrific game for Brooklyn based on the box score.
00:07:44
Speaker 2: I didn't see any of it. And Nas is Nas, and I think they won last night. But it's just a whole different.
00:07:52
Speaker 3: Did you see Walker Kessler last night? I saw some of it. 12 for 12, didn't.
00:07:56
Speaker 2: Miss a shot. Yeah, yeah. Well, the Lakers.
00:07:57
Speaker 3: Shaq's calling him Wilt.
00:08:00
Speaker 2: Milk.
00:08:01
Speaker 3: Is that what he said?
00:08:02
Speaker 2: Yeah. I liked watching those guys again last night.
00:08:05
Speaker 3: We had Kessler, you know.
00:08:07
Speaker 2: I remember.
00:08:08
Speaker 3: We traded him to get Gobert. Would you rather have Kessler or Gobert?
00:08:12
Speaker 2: Well, I mean, yeah.
00:08:14
Speaker 4: Obviously, Kessler's got a, you know, how old is he?
00:08:18
Speaker 1: 23, 24?
00:08:18
Speaker 4: Yeah, of course you'd take him. But Gobert still has a pretty big impact on this team defensively. He had 15 rebounds last night. And it's hard to replace Gobert. that they don't have another center really on this team right now that's capable of doing what Rudy Gobert is capable of doing defensively.
00:08:33
Speaker 2: They don't need Rudy to score.
00:08:33
Speaker 1: Can we continue to shoot like that if the other team shows an interest in defending, I wonder?
00:08:38
Speaker 2: What do you mean?
00:08:39
Speaker 3: Well, I mean, last night, the Wolves were... Oh, no, they're going to face.
00:08:42
Speaker 2: There wasn't one.
00:08:42
Speaker 3: Not one shot they took last night was contested. Not one.
00:08:46
Speaker 4: That's not.
00:08:46
Speaker 2: Did you watch the whole game? Yes, I watched the whole game.
00:08:49
Speaker 3: Okay, well, now, they had.
00:08:50
Speaker 2: There were guys that were putting... You know, they were trying. No, they weren't all clear.
00:08:53
Speaker 3: They weren't all contested shots.
00:08:55
Speaker 2: Of course there will be. Even.
00:08:57
Speaker 3: Even.
00:08:57
Speaker 1: As.
00:08:59
Speaker 3: Jacubo said, they didn't play defense.
00:09:01
Speaker 4: No, they didn't.
00:09:01
Speaker 3: Well, again, I mentioned some of the players.
00:09:03
Speaker 4: They got older players on the team. I'm not quite sure this is going to be a very... I mean, they have high hopes in Miami.
00:09:09
Speaker 3: They're terrible.
00:09:10
Speaker 1: My point is, I'm asking you, you think they'll continue to score at this prolific rate?
00:09:17
Speaker 2: Oh, no, no, no.
00:09:18
Speaker 4: I mean, they're going to face much better defensive guards.
00:09:23
Speaker 2: Then what are we going to do? Well, you've got to keep the ball moving.
00:09:27
Speaker 3: How many times do we get to the free throw, Lyle?
00:09:30
Speaker 2: I don't know. My box score doesn't say free throws. I don't know why. It's kind of crazy.
00:09:36
Speaker 4: They got minutes, points, field goals, three-point, rebounds, assists, turnovers, and personal fouls. I don't have free throws here. I don't know what the stat was.
00:09:43
Speaker 3: Well, let me tell you, it wasn't many. No.
00:09:45
Speaker 1: Now, when they're leaving you wide open for threes, you don't need to get to the line. You can shoot with 17 seconds still on the shot clock like they did last night. All their shots were taken with 17 seconds left, 15 seconds left, 20 seconds. And that's fine because the other team was. was offering no resistance whatsoever. I love what I saw last night.
00:10:07
Speaker 2: Well, they're not going to score 131 points every game.
00:10:09
Speaker 3: I need to see some.
00:10:11
Speaker 4: Well, the schedule, I mean, just based on what the NBA is like this year, there's a lot of really good teams. So, of course, they're not going to keep up this pace. But I think it's the style they're playing with that matters, that hopefully will mean a lot more wins and a lot more, you know, not just entertaining basketball, but winning basketball. And Lonzo Bell, I mean, you know, the joy that he plays with on the court And we haven't had anyone like that.
00:10:37
Speaker 2: I mean, Ant still is prone to.
00:10:40
Speaker 1: Do you think he'll be like that for 82 games, the joy of LaMelo ball?
00:10:44
Speaker 2: I don't know. I think that's just his nature. We talked about it yesterday.
00:10:51
Speaker 4: When this team does hit a three or loses three out of six or three out of five, whatever it is... I don't think they're going to lose three or four in a row. The way I saw it last night, that's the best team in the NBA. Well, again... That's common man being the common man.
00:11:07
Speaker 3: It's the best. No, I was wrong. I'm all on board with this club.
00:11:11
Speaker 4: And then if they start losing, you're going to go, I should have listened to everybody telling me that this is so predictable.
00:11:17
Speaker 3: It's so predictable.
00:11:22
Speaker 2: That's why I enjoy working here. You just said you love this club.
00:11:25
Speaker 1: I do.
00:11:25
Speaker 3: Then I do too. What's wrong with me loving this club?
00:11:27
Speaker 2: No, but of course they're going to lose games. The league is too good.
00:11:31
Speaker 4: And I'm not just talking about OKC in San Antonio and Houston and Denver and the Lakers in the West. But other teams in the East, Toronto is really good. Detroit is really good. The Knicks are really good. The Celtics are really good. You're going to face these teams night after night after night, and there's not going to be teams that are going to just run away and hide.
00:11:52
Speaker 2: Bring them all on.
00:11:53
Speaker 3: We'll play them all.
00:11:54
Speaker 2: Okay.
00:11:54
Speaker 3: I have no idea what today is. Pick your poison with us.
00:11:57
Speaker 2: Oh, it might be. Let's break. Come back.
00:11:59
Speaker 3: We got a keyword, though, as we go to break time. What you got?
00:12:03
Speaker 5: Yeah, the fan and two men in a truck want to give you a shot to win bonus bucks with our national cash contest. Enter the keyword win at kfan.com. Now, free shot to win. Keyword is win. Enter now at kfan.com.
00:12:17
Speaker 3: He has the best seat in the house, and we're all better off for it. It's Mark Rosen with the common man on the fan. From the 1-800-ASK-GARY-TRAFFIC-CENTER, this report is sponsored by Gens Ryan Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, and Electrical.
00:12:33
Speaker 1: Roadwork in the left lane on West 494 before Cedar causing backups from about 34th.
00:12:41
Speaker 3: I sit in.
00:12:42
Speaker 1: My cage and wonder where's Mark Rosen. Too hungry to whine, too sad to bark. No kibble in my bowl, no water in my dish.
00:12:50
Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
00:12:51
Speaker 3: Walking with Mark is all that I wish.
00:12:53
Speaker 2: I'll be there in an hour. Hang on, beer.
00:12:59
Speaker 1: A close circuit to anyone who will be near the Golden Valley Main Society between 3.15 and 4 o'clock.
00:13:07
Speaker 3: Would you please scope it?
00:13:09
Speaker 2: Yes, please.
00:13:09
Speaker 3: Do a stakeout.
00:13:10
Speaker 4: Yeah, please do. Take a picture with me and the dog. And let's Unless he's taking a nap.
00:13:15
Speaker 2: I don't know.
00:13:18
Speaker 3: Someone asked me... Are you going to pick out Bear or do you just pick out any dog?
00:13:21
Speaker 2: No, probably.
00:13:21
Speaker 4: I want to see if Bear remembers me. So I'll probably go to him. I mean, honestly, I had a... There were probably a dozen dogs and I took a walk around and he was the one that was the most mellow and made eye contact and all that stuff. And then the volunteer from there said, you got the best one. I mean, he's... He's just, but he's also, you know, pretty sad because, you know, got left there.
00:13:49
Speaker 3: Several people are correcting you.
00:13:51
Speaker 1: LaMelo Ball plays first, not Lonzo.
00:13:53
Speaker 3: LaMelo Ball. You were saying Lonzo Ball.
00:13:55
Speaker 2: I said Lonzo?
00:13:56
Speaker 3: Well, that's it. About 25 people have said that.
00:13:58
Speaker 2: Oh, I apologize. It's his dad.
00:13:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's LaMelo Ball.
00:14:01
Speaker 2: I know who it is.
00:14:01
Speaker 4: Well, I just wanted to make sure you knew. All right, well, that'll be one more thing for us to talk about. LaMelo Ball, yes, I know who he is.
00:14:08
Speaker 2: That you knew.
00:14:11
Speaker 3: In that game last night, did you watch the whole game?
00:14:13
Speaker 4: I did.
00:14:14
Speaker 3: Even at the end, I see I can't watch a blowout.
00:14:17
Speaker 4: Well, I wanted to see how Finch was going to use his rotation at the end.
00:14:21
Speaker 3: Yes. I did not. But what I did see was they actually did a story about it. Give me one second here. This is from the Athletic.
00:14:33
Speaker 1: Headline of the story says, hold on, I'm waiting for it to, hello. NBA referee union admits LaMelo Ball's moonwalk step.
00:14:43
Speaker 3: Back three was actually a travel.
00:14:45
Speaker 2: That's hilarious.
00:14:47
Speaker 3: Devon Henderson writes, well, it's hilarious if you're a Wolves fan.
00:14:50
Speaker 2: Well, it didn't matter.
00:14:51
Speaker 3: What if it would have? What if it would have ended up being a two-point win for the Wolves?
00:14:55
Speaker 2: Well, how many?
00:14:56
Speaker 3: That you think would be hilarious to the Miami Heat?
00:14:58
Speaker 2: No.
00:14:58
Speaker 1: Well, Minnesota's Timberwolves point guard LaMelo Ball asserts his moonwalk into a second quarter three-pointer Wednesday's game against Miami wasn't a travel. The rest of the world seems to disagree. That includes the league's referees' union. The NBA's official RefereeX account weighed in on social media to confirm that Ball's move was illegal, even though it wasn't called in real time. For everyone asking, how is this legal? It's not, the account wrote. He gathers with his right foot on the floor and would be permitted two steps by rule, left, right. He takes four steps after gathering the ball and travels. The most, the craziest part or saddest would be, or... the most troublesome, is the referee was standing right there and watched him do it. Now, Antetokounmpo had one as well where he kind of passed the ball to himself, so that was another one.
00:15:48
Speaker 3: But how does a referee....
00:15:51
Speaker 1: And again, referees, in all the sports, it can be difficult, right? In football, you're back there. You're running with two wide receivers and a defensive back. But there's contact.
00:16:00
Speaker 3: Did he hold? In basketball, was it a foul? Wasn't it a foul? You're standing there staring right at him. He's all by himself, isolated.
00:16:09
Speaker 1: He takes four steps, and he doesn't call traveling.
00:16:13
Speaker 4: It's probably an indictment on how little traveling is called in the NBA period.
00:16:19
Speaker 2: Number one.
00:16:19
Speaker 4: And number two, LaMelo has a different gait, a different way of, I mean, when I first looked at him, it looked like he made a really cool move. Then they showed the replay and I was like, yeah, of course he traveled. And the referee doesn't, they ignore a lot of it. I mean, there's so many instances of guys and they can't, you know, challenge it. So life goes on, the game goes on and it happens more often than it should in the NBA where guys are move their pivot foot, and they're taking extra steps. And he got fooled by LaMelo's movement, I think, because it looked like he made it pretty smooth. He's got that different sort of kick to his shot and everything else, and I think he just got caught up in it and missed the call. I mean, that happens, like I said, it happens a lot in the NBA, where you go, I can't believe... Shay got away with that, or John Morant got away with it. A lot of the guards would get away with traveling.
00:17:15
Speaker 1: Well, there's nothing more egregious than what I saw. That's the worst non-traveling call. Oh, I've seen worse.
00:17:20
Speaker 5: How?
00:17:20
Speaker 3: That was four steps.
00:17:22
Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I can just tell you I have seen.
00:17:24
Speaker 1: I think, again, you're defending the wolves because it was a— How am I defending it by just saying— I've seen worse. That's not defending them. I said he traveled. I'd like you to show me a worse travel that wasn't called. Give me a catalog of travel calls that were never called by LeBron.
00:17:41
Speaker 4: LeBron has practically walked to the free throw line from center court, and they haven't called it. It's the NBA. They don't do a good enough job of enforcing it.
00:18:03
Speaker 3: I think that might have been the worst in the history of NBA.
00:18:07
Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know if I've ever heard the NBA referees union actually issue a statement.
00:18:12
Speaker 3: I mean, it was so bad that they had to issue.
00:18:14
Speaker 2: Well, they should have. It was bad. I don't disagree with you.
00:18:17
Speaker 3: By the way, again, you're being corrected. Lonzo is not his dad.
00:18:21
Speaker 2: It's his brother. Yeah.
00:18:23
Speaker 3: His dad is LeVar.
00:18:25
Speaker 2: So we'll get it straight one.
00:18:26
Speaker 1: Of these days. your Vikings are, rumors are they, it's when rumors, I don't know if it's rumors that it's actually going to happen, but there are people that are thinking the Vikings will try to trade for a running back.
00:18:41
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:18:42
Speaker 3: Do you think that is going to happen?
00:18:44
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:18:46
Speaker 3: Do you know something?
00:18:48
Speaker 2: No comment.
00:18:51
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
00:18:52
Speaker 2: Above average.
00:18:55
Speaker 4: No specifics. I do think they're going to trade for a running back. I think there's a concern that Aaron Jones has been gutting out an injury that's probably more serious. Thankfully, they got Jordan Mason back this week. He's been kind of gutting it out. He's a warrior. He does everything well. He's a terrific blocker. He can catch the ball. He can obviously run hard with it. I just think it's a lot to ask. a guy at that age, at this point of his career, to be the bell cow running back for this football team that's definitely a Super Bowl contending team when they're reemphasizing, in theory, the running game. And it's supposed to happen again this week with Christian Derrissaw coming back and the offensive line more solidified and getting Jordan Mason back and being able to attack, attack, attack and having more opportunities.
00:19:46
Speaker 2: Yes, I think they will trade for a running back. Which one? I don't know. Pollard, the guy.
00:19:50
Speaker 4: who's coming to town here this week. Taylor, I mean, Saquon Barkley. There's some big names floating around out there that teams are going to be looking for draft capital, and the Vikings have an opportunity if they go down that road to land. And they may not even be that big of a name, but I think they'll get– yes, I do think they'll trade for one. But, I mean, all these guys are getting asked about it. Now, Taylor was asked about it. I didn't hear his response. And that's the problem with.
00:20:19
Speaker 2: The Indy right now. I mean, it's a problem.
00:20:20
Speaker 4: I mean, they had high hopes, and they got an owner who's on the sidelines and will be again on Sunday. Fired their GM, which means the coach will be gone after this year because they'll hire a new GM, and the GM will want his own coach. So, you know, everyone's kind of looking around going, we're not even into, you know, start of the World Series, and our season's falling apart. So it's tough, especially with the trade rumors that are circling. The vultures are circling the team and the expectations. They get six days to talk about it. It's not an easy situation for some of these teams. There's some damn good football players out there, and I still would like to see. I mean, maybe they'll get another offensive lineman, but I do think running back has become more of an issue than I thought it would be. I mean, because they don't really, as we saw when Mason went down, they didn't really have a lot of depth.
00:21:10
Speaker 3: Well, particularly if.
00:21:14
Speaker 1: The passing game has gotten a little better in the past week or so, but if they're not able to pass the ball like that, they're going to have to rely on the run a little bit more. And when you have a defense like that, you kind of want to be.
00:21:26
Speaker 2: Able to run the ball.
00:21:27
Speaker 4: Well, especially late in the game, if you have a defense like that and you can run clock and But the other team on that defensive line. So, yeah, I think there's a really good chance that Teasley's going to make a move.
00:21:38
Speaker 3: Let's break.
00:21:38
Speaker 4: Come back.
00:21:39
Speaker 3: One more segment to go.
00:21:40
Speaker 1: It's the Common Man program along with Common Ten and me and Mark Rosen here on The Fan.
00:21:55
Speaker 3: It's the Common Man with Mark Rosen on The Fan. The Fan. Every weekday. The Fan, along with two men and a truck, want to help you.
00:22:13
Speaker 1: Double 13, 14, past time comedy's tend to be Mark Rosen here as well. This text message came into the Bradshaw and Bryant campaign text line.
00:22:20
Speaker 3: It reads as follows.
00:22:21
Speaker 1: From the best seat in the house, Rosen's seen it all. Every game, every legend, every bounce of the ball.
00:22:27
Speaker 3: A missed traveling call? Rosie spotted it all right. Just picked the wrong ball brother playing last night.
00:22:33
Speaker 1: Now he strolls with shelter dog Bear, still dispensing sports wisdom with his usual flair. And Bear listens politely without any doubt. mostly because he can't figure a way to get out.
00:22:45
Speaker 2: Very, very poetic. I want to think it's one of our senior writers.
00:22:52
Speaker 3: Well, that one wasn't.
00:22:53
Speaker 1: The originals were one of the senior staffers, the first three, but then other people now.
00:22:57
Speaker 3: There's a lot of poets out there.
00:22:59
Speaker 4: Listen.
00:22:59
Speaker 3: There's a lot of poetry people.
00:23:00
Speaker 4: Like I said, my goal is to just bring attention to the Humane Society, and hopefully there are people listening right now that are thinking about adopting an animal, a pet. There are a lot of kittens over there, too. Um, that's where I got two of mine over the years, but three of them, including my daughters.
00:23:17
Speaker 2: Um, and, um, but the dogs.
00:23:20
Speaker 4: Are the ones that are probably more in need right now of a home, especially the ones that get a little older. So, Hey, I'll keep doing it and keep helping them out and get my walks in with bear. If he's still there, hopefully someone adopted him.
00:23:34
Speaker 3: Headline from, um, The Guardian from across the pond. Troy Aikman and Joe Buck.
00:23:44
Speaker 1: What's next for the NFL's $ 165 million TV power couple as they head for a split?
00:23:55
Speaker 3: Talks about Aikman and Buck. Color commentator.
00:24:07
Speaker 1: Troy Aikman, money and football play-by-play partner Joe Buck, is reported to agree to a new deal with the network worth $ 108 million over six seasons. Yet Aikman has claimed ESPN does not want to renew his contract. Longest running TV broadcast partnership in NFL history looks set to end once ESPN broadcasts the big game in February.
00:24:28
Speaker 3: It would be Buck and Aikman's seventh Super Bowl together.
00:24:31
Speaker 1: The prospective rupture is another tremor shaking the NFL's media landscape.
00:24:35
Speaker 3: Only shortly after another.
00:24:36
Speaker 1: ex-Cowboy QB turned high-profile TV personality, Tony Romo, was dropped from CBS. The network formally parted ways with the 46-year-old in October.
00:24:48
Speaker 3: Adding to the intrigue, Buck and Aikman argued at.
00:24:51
Speaker 1: SoFi Stadium before the LA Rams hosted the Bills on October 12th after Buck broached the matter of the contract-related tension between them. according to front office sports. Aikman, I thought I saw a quote in here about something to the effect of, well, you know, I got to take my talents elsewhere.
00:25:15
Speaker 3: I have to take my talents elsewhere.
00:25:20
Speaker 1: It does seem strange that, you know, they would want one and not the other unless they think Aikman is And I've always, I think Aitman's fine. You know, I don't think he's the best analyst I've ever heard. I think most people would agree that we're around during the Madden era, would say it was John Madden.
00:25:37
Speaker 3: And he and.
00:25:40
Speaker 1: Summerall were probably as good as it gets, right? And I always enjoyed them. But Tenneby and I have discussed this too. You know, if there was a game being played between, let's say, the Giants in Washington and Summerall and Madden were on there, But the Vikings were playing.
00:26:01
Speaker 3: Chicago, and it was the third crew.
00:26:04
Speaker 1: I wouldn't go, well, I like Summerall and Madden so much that I have to watch. I watched the game. that is of interest to me. And I think most fans do that. And while, if you could pick and choose your broadcast team for each, well, I think most people here would pick the national treasure and, and Bursich. But if you could pick your team, everybody has their favorite, right? They would go, yeah, I wish those guys were, but I don't tune in or tune out because of who's calling the game.
00:26:35
Speaker 3: And that's right.
00:26:35
Speaker 1: And I know they got to pay these guys big money, but it seemed like what Brady, Brady does a really good job. His first year, he was shaky. Now he's really good, but, I don't know if, like I say, if the Viking game's on the same time as Brady's doing a game, I ain't watching the Brady game.
00:26:50
Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I don't know how much of a difference it really makes.
00:26:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I'm not even sure who's doing the play-by-play on CBS this Sunday.
00:26:57
Speaker 2: I don't either. But, I mean, I don't think anyone's going to say, oh, no, it's Ian Eagle or whomever.
00:27:02
Speaker 4: Right.
00:27:02
Speaker 2: Oh, I'm not going to listen. Right. I'm not going to watch.
00:27:07
Speaker 4: I was talking to you during the commercial break about the fact that J.J. Watt has been hired as a full-time NFL analyst for CBS.
00:27:13
Speaker 2: As the number one lead. Yeah, he's out.
00:27:16
Speaker 4: And the money they're paying him, it's money. I mean, Romo made money that he didn't make as quarterback of the Cowboys for being on the air.
00:27:25
Speaker 2: And Aikman, I think the thing that happened, I don't know.
00:27:27
Speaker 4: I mean, you hear stories, and unless you're a part of their inner circle, Uh, I think Aikman felt blindsided by Buck that Buck signed this big deal behind, kind of this thing behind his back without consulting with him or saying, look, I, I don't know what's happening with this.
00:27:42
Speaker 3: All for one and one for all.
00:27:44
Speaker 2: Right, right.
00:27:44
Speaker 4: You're a, we're a team. We've been together for a decade or whatever, more than that. Um, and now Aikman feels, you know, blindsided by it. And yet they have to, you know, they have to work. It's, you have to be professionals about it. They're doing the Superbowl together for crying out loud this year for the first time in ESPN's history. Um, But, yeah, I mean, these things are bound to happen because even, you know, as players, I mean, the agents that get involved, I mean, it's big, big business. I mean, you've got a guy like, you know, Joe Buck at the top of his game being able to command that kind of money and those kind of years of service. And normally, you know, his partner does pretty well himself. I mean— I just mentioned about J.J.
00:28:26
Speaker 2: Watt. I mean, he's, what is he, 37 years old? I mean, he's got this, he's set up.
00:28:30
Speaker 4: For life now because of this job he has, and he's pouring everything he has into it to work with Jim Nance as their number one analyst. Brady got paid a ton of money to go to the network, to the Fox, and I think he's doing a great job right now. I mean, when I've been able to listen to him, he's got that And Aikman does too. I mean, he does look at it. I think quarterbacks normally naturally have a little bit more insight because they understand the game a little bit.
00:29:03
Speaker 2: Look at Romo.
00:29:03
Speaker 4: I think Kirk Cousins would be a natural at some point going to a network because of how analytical he is. And he's got the gift of gab and his ability to kind of break things down. So I wouldn't be surprised when his career is over that he'll end up in some broadcast entity.
00:29:18
Speaker 1: Well, Aikman, you know, depending upon what whoever– is responsible for the hiring at each of these broadcast audio because it's not just you know it's not just cbs right nbc and fox anymore you know because you have prime and you have espn and everybody's doing games and streaming and this and that the other thing the the one place where looks prime for changes i with al michaels is 82 years old he's 82 and there there was a story the other day where i thought i read it maybe i made this up i thought that i saw a story where like the last game or two he's kind of just not sounded quite as spot on as he once was. Cause he was always very, very good at, at, at, at play by play for whatever sport he.
00:30:03
Speaker 3: Did, including what wasn't he, um, believe in miracles. Yes, I do.
00:30:07
Speaker 4: He was kind of handed out as a desperation. So, so he, um, you know, he's.
00:30:12
Speaker 3: He's, but you had 82, it's maybe doesn't.
00:30:16
Speaker 1: And then herb street, what I read in a story, it says, um, Analyst Kirk, Herbstreet's job security.
00:30:25
Speaker 3: Is reportedly tenuous.
00:30:28
Speaker 2: Tenuous.
00:30:28
Speaker 1: So, Michael and Herbstreet, could that change? And then there would be an opening there for an opportunity.
00:30:34
Speaker 4: Well, I think, you know, I've heard interviews with Michael. So, I think he's pretty honest about where he's at in his career and his life. And, you know, again, he's the voice of Al Michaels. So, I haven't noticed a huge drop-off. I'm sure there are mistakes that are being made.
00:30:49
Speaker 2: Any more than that.
00:30:51
Speaker 4: What I just did with names at times and things that happen. But I still think it's Al Michaels and hasn't certainly detracted, I think, most people from tuning in to watch Thursday Night Football. No, no.
00:31:02
Speaker 1: If it's a game you want, like tonight, I'm not going to boycott the game because.
00:31:07
Speaker 4: Michaels and Herbstreit are doing the game. Right, and Herbstreit gets them. And these guys get spread, you know, like the Pat McAfee syndrome. He gets spread so thin, but he's a young guy and he's on every show right now. And he's on primetime and he's doing the pregame show and he's on college football. And he's got his own show every single day. He's a young guy and he's making zillions of dollars. But for some of the, like Herb Street, I mean, he goes from doing college football and you got to turn right around. You got to do a lot of homework. I mean, you're talking about your son doing.
00:31:37
Speaker 2: High school football.
00:31:38
Speaker 4: He's not able to probably sit down and talk to the coaches too much before the game, which is what you'd love to do. I mean, if you're preparing for a game, you'd say, hey, give me some tips on some of your kids.
00:31:48
Speaker 2: Who can I look for? What kind of situations?
00:31:50
Speaker 4: You know, that's what all these guys do when they have meetings with the coaches and a couple of select players every time they come to town. The Kevin Harlins of the world. They don't just fly by the seat of their pants. They put a lot of preparation into it. But, yeah, it's a different world because their agents get involved, and there's a whole lot of money, as we know, in the National Football League in particular for players and announcers alike.
00:32:13
Speaker 1: Golden Gophers will host Iowa on Saturday. Do you think this is I'm overreacting to the loss last week that You know, it's, what, 10 years Fleck's been with the club now.
00:32:29
Speaker 3: And, you know, we could debate or argue, you know.
00:32:35
Speaker 1: How far along the program has come since he was first there.
00:32:39
Speaker 4: Are we.
00:32:41
Speaker 3: Is it.
00:32:42
Speaker 1: I think most people would say, yeah, it's further along than when he got here, but how much further along? And after 10 years, should it be more? And, you know, you look at it... And again, I don't want to overreact, but it almost seems.
00:32:52
Speaker 3: Like that loss last week was... I don't want to.
00:32:55
Speaker 1: Say it was a low, the low watermark or the, but it just that after when, if you win those two, two games against ranked opponents, you start in, you start, you know, I know Michigan wasn't the Michigan of all, but still you beat them and you get the jug back and everybody's pumped up and excited. And there was even more attention paid because of the blood wiping incident and the body surfing at the Michigan game that a lot of eyes were on the program. And then you go and play a, a pretty ordinary Boilermaker team, wouldn't you say?
00:33:28
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:33:28
Speaker 3: And you don't just lose, you get destroyed. And now we're back and playing another one.
00:33:33
Speaker 1: It's like, well, even if we beat Iowa, do I just go, yeah, it's great, but is it just going to be this seesaw where we win a couple of games and then we lose a couple of games and win a couple of games? And maybe because of nil and because whatever, being in a big city and there's all these proteins, whatever all the reasons have been that the team has never been able to get to a level and stay there. But that game to me, that one against the Boilermakers was, like you say, demoralizing.
00:33:58
Speaker 4: It wasn't just a loss. It was the fact that they just were never in it for a second. I mean, what's the term? Boat raced, whatever you want to call it. they couldn't stop their former running back, they couldn't do anything offensively, they just got smoked. And that's the thing you go, well, it's one thing to lose a game. College football is so unpredictable, and you've got 19-year-old kids, and we've seen that week after week, even among the elite teams, there's some crazy upsets.
00:34:25
Speaker 2: And a lot of those games come down to the wire. The Gopher game didn't come down to the wire.
00:34:29
Speaker 4: They were out of it, certainly by halftime, and certainly by the end of the first quarter.
00:34:35
Speaker 2: So it does tend you to think, well, what... what was their preparation?
00:34:39
Speaker 4: Like, how could they, how could they let this happen again against a real ordinary football team? And now they got Iowa and Fleck is what? One in nine against, uh, Iowa. I think he's got, he's, he's got, he beat, he got the pig once when that long ago. And, you know, I got homecoming. It looks like the weather's going to be great on Saturday. Uh, Iowa will have a lot of people here. It should be festive is what it should be.
00:35:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know what you're getting with Iowa.
00:35:04
Speaker 4: Every single, you know, they're about as consistent a football team. I mean, Wisconsin had a long stretch of years of seasons where they, you know, you knew they were going to run the ball well. They weren't going to throw it all that much. They had great offensive lines. Iowa is predictable that way, but they're so good at what they do. And, you know, unless the Gophers fundamentally, and I know Fleck uses the word, you know, like a lot of coaches, we've got to play great complementary football. Well, duh, of course they do. But you've got to be able to force things and make the right calls. And, man, I know exactly what you're saying because they've got a number of ranked teams they've got to play after this, including Indiana and UCLA.
00:35:44
Speaker 2: And, man, if this thing goes south.
00:35:46
Speaker 3: Or UCLA starting quarterback, you know, for the year that.
00:35:48
Speaker 1: I see that.
00:35:48
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. But, you know, they've still got a good team.
00:35:51
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
00:35:52
Speaker 4: But, I mean, the point of the matter is, Yeah, you've got to take advantage of it. I'm not saying by beating Iowa, it's going to erase what happened against Purdue. It certainly would help a lot.
00:35:59
Speaker 3: An Ohio State starting quarterback is out.
00:36:01
Speaker 2: For the year. Yeah, Sam is gone for... At least for a good portion of it. Yeah, he is.
00:36:06
Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
00:36:07
Speaker 2: No, that's okay.
00:36:08
Speaker 4: I just think that yeah, it's, it's another opportunity, uh, trophy game. They talk about it. They, you know, there's the one time they, you know, they got room in the trophy case over there.
00:36:17
Speaker 3: But then, like I said, if they went out, okay, great. That's fine.
00:36:19
Speaker 2: And it's good.
00:36:20
Speaker 3: I guess for, for Iowa week, it's great. But then is it really, it's, are we still just running in place? Just running in place and running in place and running in place.
00:36:28
Speaker 2: It feels that way.
00:36:29
Speaker 3: It seems like it is. Um, they were just on ESPN. They were celebrating 25 years of, uh, um, Pardon the interruption.
00:36:37
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:36:38
Speaker 3: We're celebrating PA's 500th game.
00:36:40
Speaker 1: We celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Power Trip Morning Show.
00:36:44
Speaker 3: We celebrated.
00:36:45
Speaker 2: Still celebrating.
00:36:46
Speaker 3: Power Trip. Power Trip Morning Show. You, 50 years in television.
00:36:50
Speaker 2: Nice celebration.
00:36:51
Speaker 3: In the Hall of Fame.
00:36:52
Speaker 1: And all Tenneby and I are handed is tenuous job security. I don't know why that is, Tenneby, but we just.
00:36:59
Speaker 2: I don't get it. We never.
00:37:02
Speaker 3: Nothing.
00:37:03
Speaker 2: Nothing.
00:37:03
Speaker 1: Zero.
00:37:03
Speaker 3: Tenuous job security is it.
00:37:08
Speaker 2: Well, I'd start in the coroner's office.
00:37:09
Speaker 3: Well, I've tried there.
00:37:11
Speaker 1: I'm sure you have. The coroner's office isn't in my corner. Well, they are in my corner, but they're not in my corner, I don't think.
00:37:18
Speaker 2: They should have balloons and cake.
00:37:22
Speaker 1: Lastly, we talked a little bit about it yesterday. You know, the Larkin character is expanded. It seems that he would accept the deal, too, because he has an O-Trade clause to 10. And that Russo says that was leaked from the camp of.
00:37:37
Speaker 3: The camp of Larkin.
00:37:38
Speaker 1: So it wasn't just, you know, the red wings trying to make the wild think you better act now. Um, you know, and, and, and I, I, I don't know if the wild, the rumors are, they just don't have the prospects, the a prospects they have. We don't know if they interest Detroit or not, you know, and you know, the.
00:37:57
Speaker 3: Team is playing well without Larkin.
00:37:58
Speaker 1: I don't know if there's odds on them, you know, right now with the way the team is, we, It looks like we have a 75% chance of making the Stanley Cup Finals.
00:38:07
Speaker 3: And if we get Larkin, does it jump up exponentially? Is that the right word? I just don't know.
00:38:14
Speaker 1: But I think it would be, with all the hope that he could be traded, or if he doesn't.
00:38:20
Speaker 3: It would be a little bit of.
00:38:21
Speaker 1: An air out of the balloon a little bit.
00:38:25
Speaker 4: Here we are in almost the end of October, and the two storylines that have been going on for pretty much all summer and into the start of the season are the Quinn Hughes contract extension. which of course hasn't happened, and the Larkin situation. The needle hasn't moved on either one to the point where the Russos of the world are going, well, it sounds like it's going to happen.
00:38:48
Speaker 2: This is going to happen. This is going to happen. No.
00:38:51
Speaker 4: And I don't know if it's probably a ploy by the agent to make it sound like there's more teams interested, but reading the tea leaves and trying to understand it and what Bill Guerin's doing behind the scenes and probably the offers that he's made, you know, it's, you still feel like something's going.
00:39:07
Speaker 2: To get done with, with the Larkin thing.
00:39:08
Speaker 4: But at this point, you just kind of shrug your shoulders and go, well, just keep playing and hopefully playing winning hockey.
00:39:14
Speaker 1: And Vikings game day on Sunday, right?
00:39:18
Speaker 4: Yes.
00:39:18
Speaker 2: Vikings game day. What time?
00:39:20
Speaker 4: 930. Well, finally we got a noon home game. So again, 930 to 11 at US Bank. I'm sure Paul Allen will be featured on it.
00:39:28
Speaker 2: He always has his winning formula.
00:39:29
Speaker 4: And me, I should recognize the fact that he's going to be celebrating his 500th.
00:39:35
Speaker 2: Why hasn't anybody talked about it?
00:39:36
Speaker 3: I don't know.
00:39:36
Speaker 4: I haven't heard a word about it. I think we'll mention it on the show, though. You can call it Indy 500.
00:39:41
Speaker 2: Well, you know what?
00:39:46
Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of appropriate that it's the Colts because he was also a horse race caller because that first game he was a pony and now he's a thoroughbred.
00:39:54
Speaker 2: Look at that.
00:39:56
Speaker 3: That's the cheesy line.
00:39:58
Speaker 4: Thank you for mentioning that.
00:40:00
Speaker 5: And this week he's been beating the bit with a dead horse. Yeah, beating it like a dead horse.
00:40:06
Speaker 3: That's brilliant.
00:40:07
Speaker 2: That's good stuff.
00:40:08
Speaker 3: That's really good. It's the best. Well, the bear poems are pretty good, too.
00:40:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm on my way.
00:40:13
Speaker 3: We'll see you next week.
00:40:14
Speaker 5: Say hi to Bear for us.
00:40:15
Speaker 2: I will. I'll say hi.
00:40:16
Speaker 3: We'll see you next week.
00:40:17
Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
00:40:18
Speaker 3: Attend me. Who's on Program Password tomorrow? Corey Cove and Marnie Gellner. Ooh, heavy hitters.
00:40:23
Speaker 1: Fun.
00:40:23
Speaker 3: We'll do that tomorrow at.
