00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:08.720
You're listening to the Catholic Acting podcast, where we revisit the stories you thought you knew and answer the questions you've always had about faith.
00:00:08.960 --> 00:00:10.400
Season three, one take.
00:00:10.480 --> 00:00:11.839
I want to cut down your editing.
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:15.199
God love you, editor.
00:00:15.519 --> 00:00:20.399
I'm your host, Jordan Wico, along with Father Christopher Poojal and Father Andrew Hamilton.
00:00:20.640 --> 00:00:21.679
Let's roll.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:27.839
So it says here a common misunderstanding is thinking Samson is simply a hero we're supposed to imitate.
00:00:28.320 --> 00:00:31.839
The Bible actually presents him as deeply flawed.
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:36.960
God works through Samson despite his failures, not because of his perfection.
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:41.439
Yeah, this is a good point about all of especially the Old Testament.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:46.479
People say there's all these terrible things and terrible people and slayings and killings and this, that, or whatever.
00:00:46.719 --> 00:00:50.479
Because it's showing you accurate history, so it's not trying to whitewash that.
00:00:50.719 --> 00:00:51.920
And it shows the human condition.
00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:56.159
Yeah, but it's never giving credence to living that way.
00:00:56.640 --> 00:01:00.240
It's rather saying, like, this is what happens whenever you're devoid of God's grace.
00:01:00.399 --> 00:01:05.359
When everybody does what they want in their own eyes rather than the eyes of God, this is what happens.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:06.799
Don't let that happen.
00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:10.799
Be a part of God's household and live in ways of righteousness and truth.
00:01:10.959 --> 00:01:20.719
So that's why like we shouldn't whitewash the history of the Bible or be upset that there's like difficult stories there, but rather they're leading us towards the truth that we find in Christ Jesus.
00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:29.120
Some people find the New Testament easy to read and the Old Testament full of like a bunch of difficult things, and they almost separate the two whenever they're rather a whole tool.
00:01:29.359 --> 00:01:34.879
And they want to almost talk about God as two separate the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament, but we cannot do that.
00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:43.120
It's the same God, one in the same, and the human condition has changed, and we see God's interaction with us in different ways.
00:01:43.519 --> 00:01:54.319
Did people like when he was a baby, did people know that he was going to be this like powerful, as you put it, like action hero, superhero type person?
00:01:54.480 --> 00:01:56.319
Well, I think it almost sounds like Hercules.
00:01:56.560 --> 00:01:59.519
When he was a child, the angel came to his parents.
00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:02.480
The biblical literature makes it seem like that they would be alone.
00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:04.640
Like this isn't something that everybody else sees.
00:02:04.799 --> 00:02:09.759
But the angel comes to them and then essentially like makes this proclamation.
00:02:09.919 --> 00:02:11.039
They show hospitality.
00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:19.759
This is a theme in the Old Testament as well, that you never know, be aware, because you could be showing hospitality to not just some random stranger, but God.
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:24.159
And this is even in the ancient world, the Greeks had this as well called Zenia.
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:26.719
There were certain laws around hospitality and so forth.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:29.599
So it's a recurrent theme that we even see in the biblical literature.
00:02:29.759 --> 00:02:35.919
But at that point, whenever the angel comes in, they show hospitality, they recognize after the proclamation who the angel is.
00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:39.759
And you hear the parents of Samson say that they should have like died in the presence of the angel.
00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:42.879
They're like afraid of, but the angel says all shall be well.
00:02:43.039 --> 00:02:53.439
And then the angel throws himself on a py, like a fire that they had made for the animal sacrifice that they had, and then rises up to heaven, like returns to heaven in a way.
00:02:53.520 --> 00:03:05.199
And so there's this supernatural reality that they know that their son will be something special, but I don't know if that's realized until maybe his youth to uh certainly by the time he's an adult, he's doing feats that no one else can do.
00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:05.919
He has a human.
00:03:06.319 --> 00:03:10.719
And people would have known that he made that Nazarite vow, and that vow was being lived out.
00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:17.360
So, you know, it's it's you guys said it was a jawbone of a donkey.
00:03:17.520 --> 00:03:19.280
Is there any symbolism in that?
00:03:19.599 --> 00:03:25.039
There's there's some symbolism with donkeys in and of themselves, that they've always been kind of servant animals.
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:30.960
But also donkeys, if people have farms, they're protectors, they're actually rather uh temperamental.
00:03:31.199 --> 00:03:36.240
That's why they would go over and they would kick wolves or coyotes or different things that then protect the flock.
00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:44.080
And so Samson is still protecting the Israelites from the Philistines, but he's not doing so in a way that God has ordained.
00:03:44.319 --> 00:03:45.759
He's giving himself a self-justification.
00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:49.439
So he's doing he's doing the job, he's just not doing it correctly.
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:49.759
Right.
00:03:49.840 --> 00:03:51.919
So, like we can say Or with the right intention.
00:03:52.159 --> 00:03:54.800
I could think of this within the priesthood, for example.
00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:01.599
I don't pray all my hours, a priest might say, because I'm busy and I'm helping people all day and like my work is my prayer.
00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:07.199
Well, that's not what promise you made before your diocesan bishop on the day of your ordination.
00:04:07.280 --> 00:04:11.439
You said that you would pray five times daily for the sake of the church, universal.
00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:21.120
And so that's great that you're doing a lot of good works out there, but you still have to do it the way that God has established it and the way that you agreed upon, not just say, like, oh, I'm gonna do it my way.
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:22.720
You see how that becomes problematic.
00:04:22.800 --> 00:04:27.839
And then when you start to do it my way and give yourself a justification, you fall off the cliff very quickly.
00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:35.600
Like if you go on your own without accountability and without the way that God has established those parameters for you, you're in very dangerous waters.
00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:45.040
So in in Samson's case, we see him at the end of the story, he still recognizes that he has a duty to protect the Israel people.
00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:56.160
He pulls down the gates, and he himself ends up perishing because of his role in protecting Israel, just as Christ himself offers himself in sacrifice.
00:04:56.480 --> 00:05:08.319
And there's something here too from the Adam and Eve narrative, as well as Samson and Delilah, that uh in a way the protection is given to Adam is to till and to keep in his priestly role.
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:14.079
But husband and wife protect for each other and have to protect their inherent relationship and the way that they live.
00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:20.079
And so what you see with Eve is that she really doesn't protect Adam from the forbidden fruit.
00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:35.120
And what you see with Delilah is that Delilah doesn't protect Samson whenever there's an introduction of the evil to her and an evil purpose, she doesn't rebu rebuke that, but rather all of those consequences come down upon her beloved.
00:05:35.600 --> 00:05:39.199
And so what we see is the exact opposite image in Jesus, right?
00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:43.680
Announced by an angel that he's going to do great things, the rise and fall of Israel and so forth.
00:05:44.079 --> 00:05:46.319
Rides into Jerusalem on a donkey.
00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:49.519
And beyond that, right, what does he do?
00:05:49.759 --> 00:05:52.000
He shields us from the evil.
00:05:52.720 --> 00:05:59.439
Instead of his bride leading to destruction, he shields the bride from evil and restores.
00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:03.600
And so Jesus is the opposite image of what's happening here, especially with Samson.
00:06:03.839 --> 00:06:06.560
And that bride becomes the church, right?
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:18.399
And each one of us, as a member of that, becomes shielded from that evil that from the very first moments of the fall through Samson, through all of these biblical stories.
00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:19.519
We've been looking at that.
00:06:19.680 --> 00:06:25.040
We've seen, you know, that serpent slither through and see how humanity falls.
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:27.920
But now we are protected from that in the bride, the church.
00:06:28.160 --> 00:06:31.680
And what I would say on that is the corruption of the best is the worst.
00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:35.759
Catholics are given much in the spiritual world, spiritual realm.
00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:36.720
We're given everything.
00:06:36.959 --> 00:06:43.680
We're given the sacraments, the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ Himself, everything down the line, great tradition, culture, history.
00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:46.800
I'll just refer back to the words of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes.
00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:58.959
The French government asked Saint Bernadette what she was afraid of as the Prussians were coming to the gates of France in her time, and she said, The only thing that I'm afraid of is bad Catholics.
00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:02.399
That was her simple statement to the French.
00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:11.199
And in that way, we have to recognize if we don't entrust ourselves to the grace of God, no matter what inheritance we've been given, we will fall short.
00:07:11.360 --> 00:07:13.600
We'll become like Samson in his fall.
00:07:13.759 --> 00:07:17.439
We could be super powerful, strong, be able to do everything.
00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:24.959
We could have a high intellect, all these other things, be successful in the midst of the world, and yet it's all for nothing if it's not given to God.
00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:30.240
And so that's a reminder for us no matter how great we are, we're not really great in comparison to God.
00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:32.639
It's only his glory that needs to shine through us.
00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:35.199
