00:00:21.199 --> 00:00:23.839
Welcome to the Forty Forty Pastor Podcast.
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:25.600
I'm your host, Arthur J.
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:26.239
James.
00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:34.399
And if you're a bi vocational pastor or church leader looking to remain fulfilled in ministry and life, then you've landed at the right spot.
00:00:34.719 --> 00:00:36.960
Let's get into today's session.
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:44.560
We have a great guest that's going to share his insight on the 4040 life in just a moment.
00:00:44.719 --> 00:00:54.560
But before I bring him on, I want to thank all of you that began to launch with us on the first episode where we begin to uncover what is the 4040 calling.
00:00:54.719 --> 00:00:57.840
We begin to look at the lies we tell ourselves.
00:00:58.079 --> 00:01:02.240
And today I want to set the foundation for this episode.
00:01:02.560 --> 00:01:04.640
This episode will do three things.
00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:14.000
First of all, it will share with you a model, not a blueprint, of what it looks like to fulfill the 4040 life in a fruitful manner.
00:01:14.239 --> 00:01:14.560
Dr.
00:01:14.719 --> 00:01:21.599
Chapman has his own way of doing it, just as many of us who are biocational, so it's a it's a model, not a blueprint.
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:28.400
And then secondly, this episode will begin to give you new language around the 4040 Bible life.
00:01:28.640 --> 00:01:35.040
I'm sure from his perspective, he'll share how he's defined living in both worlds and being successful.
00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:37.680
We can just add that onto what we already have.
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:49.280
And thirdly, in this episode, it is my prayer that you will receive permission to remain in the 4040 by vocational pastor leader in church space.
00:01:49.439 --> 00:01:53.120
Maybe you're still having a little guilt about having a foot in both worlds.
00:01:53.280 --> 00:02:03.599
It is our prayer by the time that this episode is done, you have a release and permission to lead in the 4040 space with clarity, with conviction, and with courage.
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:11.439
That being shared, it is my extreme pleasure to invite the first guest of the 4040 podcast, Dr.
00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:13.120
Kenneth Chapman.
00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:14.159
Welcome, Dr.
00:02:14.240 --> 00:02:14.800
Chapman.
00:02:14.960 --> 00:02:15.840
So glad you're here with us.
00:02:16.240 --> 00:02:16.479
Amen.
00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:17.840
Thanks, my brother, for having me.
00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:26.240
Excited about this opportunity to share with you and also to spend time with you as our counter mentor as well, too, in this particular space around this important topic.
00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:27.680
So excited to be here.
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:30.080
Well, it is my honor to have you on.
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:36.159
Before we get started with any questions, I want to give a proper introduction as best I can.
00:02:36.479 --> 00:02:38.879
So today, we're blessed to have Dr.
00:02:38.960 --> 00:02:40.240
Kenneth Chapman.
00:02:40.400 --> 00:02:44.560
He originally hails from a suburb of Oklahoma City.
00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:52.639
He's also matriculated through having his undergraduate degree, business degree from the state of Oklahoma.
00:02:52.800 --> 00:03:01.199
Also, he has a master's degree and a PhD from the University of Oklahoma, if my memory serves me well.
00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:11.520
He's also a most recent recipient of the Hall of Fame Award, one of the Hall of Fame Awards from Oklahoma Baptist University, which he can tell us a little bit more about that.
00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:13.439
But he is a man of God.
00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:17.759
He's also an executive pastor of a church in Frisco, Texas.
00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:19.680
He told us a little bit more about that as well.
00:03:19.759 --> 00:03:33.520
But also, he is an instructor/slash professor at the Neely School of Business at one of the country's foremost premier inst uh institutions and universities on research, Texas Christian University.
00:03:33.680 --> 00:03:34.879
We know it as TCU.
00:03:35.039 --> 00:03:38.960
He's not originally from Texas, but he got here like most folks did as soon as he could.
00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:42.000
Uh with that being shared, again, I want to welcome Dr.
00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:45.120
Kenneth Chapman to the 4040 Pastors Podcast.
00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:46.400
Good to have you, my brother.
00:03:46.639 --> 00:03:47.439
It's good to be here.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:48.639
Looking forward to it.
00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:49.759
Yes, sir.
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:52.560
So, first question I want to ask you off the bat.
00:03:52.800 --> 00:03:54.000
Well, first let's go back.
00:03:54.159 --> 00:03:57.919
Tell us a little bit more about the Hall of Fame Award you just received.
00:03:58.159 --> 00:03:58.560
Yeah.
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:02.560
Um, you know, I'm not one to celebrate things.
00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:04.479
I just put my head down and work.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:16.079
But uh that that is as a result of the bi vocational lifestyle of having working in higher education as an administrator, a dean, and a professor, and also pastoring.
00:04:16.160 --> 00:04:34.240
Uh one of the one of my stops was Oklahoma Baptist University, where I instituted Kingdom Diversity Focus at the institution, um, being an assistant dean of students and in charge of what we call Kingdom uh impact, kingdom diversity, not your traditional chief diversity officer role that many public institutions have.
00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:38.000
Um so that was a blend of my pastorate and professorship.
00:04:38.079 --> 00:04:42.720
Um and then years later, after I'd moved to Texas, they wanted to honor the work that I did there.
00:04:42.879 --> 00:04:45.759
So that was being inducted to the Hall of Fame, the Walter O.
00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:47.199
Mason uh Hall of Fame.
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:47.680
Walter O.
00:04:47.839 --> 00:04:50.319
Mason was the first black tenure professor at OBU.
00:04:50.480 --> 00:04:50.800
Oh, wow.
00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:56.160
And he was a part of the framework for trio programs nationally that were birthed out of that.
00:04:56.240 --> 00:05:02.800
And so it was an honor to be recognized alongside uh that legacy, but also, again, perfect timing.
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:12.079
It was a validation of the bivocational work because I came in as a pastor and then needed to work to make money and to pay bills and pay for diapers and daycare.
00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:16.879
And so just blending the two worlds in a Christian institution allowed me to do the bivocational thing.
00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:20.720
And so that honor just really honored uh the work that we did there during that time.
00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:22.959
So uh that's that's what that was all about.
00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:23.519
Great.
00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:30.560
And I know you have experience also in Dallas uh before going to TCU at Fort Worth as a liberal arts dean.
00:05:30.720 --> 00:05:35.519
Well, we we actually met before that at Dallas College, before it was Dallas College.
00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:39.600
And you also have leadership positions and roles at the University of Oklahoma.
00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:40.879
So you have a wealth of experience.
00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:43.439
And so I just want to say thanks for being with us again.
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:51.839
That being shared, the first question I want to ask you is what do what do you say when people ask you, what do you do?
00:05:52.399 --> 00:05:56.160
So I always, well, it's it's evolved over time.
00:05:56.319 --> 00:06:05.600
Um at first it was what my actual uh profession was, which was, you know, executive dean of liberal arts or professor.
00:06:05.759 --> 00:06:13.680
Um and I think more so because I kept the two worlds separate, pastor and what my worldly job was.
00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:19.519
Uh but over time it evolved to that what I am first is I'm a pastor first.
00:06:19.600 --> 00:06:20.720
I'm a believer first.
00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:25.279
Um and that's what I try to teach my students and try to, you know, shepherd our flock towards.
00:06:25.439 --> 00:06:28.079
We're called first and foremost to be followers of Christ.
00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:32.560
Then, oh, by the way, we have to be accountants or architects or bankers.
00:06:32.720 --> 00:06:35.120
Like our first identity is our Christian identity.
00:06:35.279 --> 00:06:38.399
And so over the last few years, when people ask, what do you do for a living?
00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:43.839
Well, I'm a pastor, uh, but I also am a professor and also teach and I'm above vocational.
00:06:43.920 --> 00:06:46.000
And a lot of people are like, well, what does by vocational mean?
00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:48.959
Well, uh, my there's two identities that I hold.
00:06:49.040 --> 00:06:53.199
The one that leads is my pastoring, and I do my pastoring wherever I go.
00:06:53.360 --> 00:06:57.439
And just so happens that being a professor, I teach wherever I go as well, too.
00:06:57.519 --> 00:07:03.199
But that has evolved over time because at first it was like, hey, just talk about my worldly career and the pastor thing set over here.
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:09.519
And if we went into conversation around ministry, around uh the faith, then I would reveal that.
00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:11.680
Now, first and foremost, I'm a pastor.
00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:15.600
I serve as active pastor and my other job is a professor.
00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:17.360
So it's evolved over time.
00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:18.079
Okay.
00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:26.560
And have you become more comfortable throughout the years, or has it always been more of the emphasis being placed on the pastoral role?
00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:28.319
I think more comfortable.
00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:37.759
Um, and as I grew up in ministry and realized that uh, you know, coming into ministry, the first thing is like, Lord, are you really calling me to this?
00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:44.959
Um and then it's like, well, I'm I'm good at speaking in front of people and I'll just fill a gap, or I'm good at administrating affairs of the church.
00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:47.519
And then you realize, no, God is really calling me to this.
00:07:47.680 --> 00:07:48.879
This is who I am.
00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:52.079
Um and then you come to a point to realize, oh, it's been on me all my life.
00:07:52.240 --> 00:08:02.160
Um, I just either ran from the Lord or didn't want to acknowledge it, and to the point where it's like that statement of being sold out for Christ, that's really being sold out for Christ.
00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:05.199
Like, first and foremost, my identity is in him.
00:08:05.519 --> 00:08:11.360
And so how I introduce myself by way, what I do for him, for the kingdom, uh, being comfortable in that.
00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:12.720
And not everybody is there.
00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:19.600
Um, and I talked to a lot of uh pastor friends who you know are on flights or at baseball games, and people ask, what do you do for a living?
00:08:19.759 --> 00:08:27.920
You know, and they don't necessarily reveal that piece because they don't want to, you know, get in an awkward conversation, or they don't want people to change their behavior because, oh, I'm around a pastor now.
00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:30.639
I shouldn't have a beer at the baseball game, live around a pastor.
00:08:30.720 --> 00:08:33.519
Um, and like I tell people all the time, be who you are.
00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:35.919
Um, this is my identity, my calling.
00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:39.440
Um, and I'm not here to browbeat you or to cast you to hell.
00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:40.720
That's not mine to do.
00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:48.240
But by my example of you knowing that I am a pastor and I'm comfortable in that, uh, you know who to go to uh for those spiritual needs.
00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:51.039
And oh, by the way, I have these other roles that I hold as well, too.
00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:55.600
So it's definitely a level of comfort that has evolved over time.
00:08:55.840 --> 00:09:06.720
So I see you or I hear you saying that that even opens the door for potential ministry conversation as you take advantage of the observation of just simply using your introduction.
00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:07.759
I love that.
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:12.559
So you took us back a little bit to the beginning of your calling.
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:32.960
I want to ask a follow-up question related to was there a particular person, mentor, pastor, denominational leader, someone who gave you permission to stay in both worlds as you sensed a calling as a pastor, but God was also calling you into education and to business as well.
00:09:33.200 --> 00:09:39.679
And uh right behind that, coupled with it rather, is was there anyone that um gave you some permission?
00:09:39.759 --> 00:09:42.720
So pushback andor permission, folks, in your life?
00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:44.559
Yeah, that that's a great question.
00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:45.200
I love that.
00:09:45.440 --> 00:09:47.279
So I've been in church all my life.
00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:50.960
Uh my dad was chairman of the deacons uh most of my life.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:57.519
And, you know, I've gone to smaller churches, so I've never known the full-time pastorate.
00:09:57.919 --> 00:09:59.039
Um, never knew that.
00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:03.360
I've all all my childhood pastors had other jobs um that I that I knew about.
00:10:03.440 --> 00:10:07.360
And so the full-time pastor was kind of like a unicorn, an anomaly.
00:10:07.519 --> 00:10:19.200
Um and so growing up in the Baptist faith um and noticing um the service on Sundays and pouring in and then the Monday through Friday other jobs, that's what I grew up knowing.
00:10:19.360 --> 00:10:28.080
And so I don't think it was until I really got involved in ministry full-time that I said that some people actually do this full-time, like this is their full-time job.
00:10:28.320 --> 00:10:34.080
Um, and I think I was older and I asked a question to one of my uh mentors in Oklahoma City one time.
00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:40.320
I was like, uh he had just took a church, a smaller church, um, and he had gone full-time.
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:42.639
And I said, You can actually do this full-time.
00:10:42.879 --> 00:10:51.279
And it was it blew my mind, like you actually like benefits and payroll, like because that's always in the back of your head as a provider, as a father, as a husband.
00:10:51.360 --> 00:10:52.320
Um I didn't know that.
00:10:52.480 --> 00:10:55.759
So that was my world was blown that you could you could pastor full-time.
00:10:55.919 --> 00:11:09.679
And that became one of my goals is in later on in life, once you know my kids are older, I would transition from a traditional full-time role into a full-time pastor role.
00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:13.519
The reason why I so I kind of went reverse in the ministry.
00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:18.480
Um, I knew I wanted to be a professor, I knew I wanted to be in the university setting.
00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:20.639
So I went and got all my degrees in education.
00:11:20.799 --> 00:11:27.360
I didn't go to seminary, uh, I wasn't connected to a large denomination or convocation uh like most others are.
00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:35.840
And so my opportunities came from uh from teaching, uh teaching at the conventions, the National Baptist Convention, teaching in the district.
00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:43.120
That's where my opportunities came from using my teaching gifts uh that I had learned from higher education and building curriculum.
00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:51.039
And then I accepted the call to the ministry and then started taking classes around ministry and church operations and seminary classes.
00:11:51.120 --> 00:11:52.720
So I kind of came backwards.
00:11:52.799 --> 00:12:03.519
But at that point, I had a PhD, I had all this student loan that I'm like, well, the churches that I'm serving are not mega churches, and they don't know what staff is, what a staff salary is.
00:12:03.759 --> 00:12:08.799
So I had to pay for that in addition to when we uh added more kids up to five now.
00:12:08.960 --> 00:12:10.240
So I had to have benefits.
00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:18.080
Um mama needed some money to spend every now and then, and ministry is honorable, but you gotta have, you know, you gotta have some capital sometimes to do some things.
00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:33.120
And so uh I'm blessed in hindsight now to see that education lended itself with the schedule, you know, summers off, um, you know, most holidays off, and flexibility to go and do, you know, funerals or travel, things of that nature.
00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:35.519
Education was a field that lended itself to that.
00:12:35.600 --> 00:12:38.559
Um, and then, you know, and I'll tell the secret on our story.
00:12:38.720 --> 00:12:40.000
Like I didn't know you.
00:12:40.159 --> 00:12:47.919
Um, and so I was actually grappling with, we were at the University of Oklahoma, my wife was nursing there in Oklahoma, but we felt called to Dallas.
00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.200
Um, I applied at SMU, I'd applied a bunch of places.
00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:52.960
And so I actually went on LinkedIn.
00:12:53.120 --> 00:12:58.960
Uh a mentor of mine said, well, you got to start connecting with people who do this, who do the bivocational thing.
00:12:59.120 --> 00:13:03.679
Um, and sure enough, as the spirit would have it, Arthur James came up and preaching through pain.
00:13:03.759 --> 00:13:04.639
I see the book right there.
00:13:05.039 --> 00:13:05.200
Wow.
00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:12.639
And I reached out on LinkedIn, not knowing anything about Dallas County Community College, not knowing Shonda Floyd, none of that.
00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:14.720
Um, and that's when we started connecting.
00:13:14.879 --> 00:13:20.240
And again, one of the things I think is beautiful about bivocational pastors is that they're always willing to help another.
00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:23.600
And you didn't know me from Adam, but you got on a call with me.
00:13:23.679 --> 00:13:28.080
Uh, you you mentored me, you reached out to me through text, you kept your eye open.
00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:30.639
And again, I didn't know about Dallas County Community College.
00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:33.200
I was applying, I was a blitz applying everywhere.
00:13:33.360 --> 00:13:39.360
And sure enough, I interviewed with Shonda and got the job, then I realized that you were still working there as well, too.
00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:43.360
Um, and then that's how, again, I it's a God thing that connected us.
00:13:43.440 --> 00:13:51.679
Um, and then, and I will say it not just because I'm the first on the podcast, but I followed how you mapped it out, how you did the bi-vocational league.
00:13:51.919 --> 00:14:00.480
I mean, we had conversations on how do you wind one down and ramp the other up, uh, making sure that, you know, because income mortgage got to be paid, right?
00:14:00.559 --> 00:14:02.080
And God is a provider, right?
00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:04.639
But also there's the benefits, and then there's the time, right?
00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:06.480
And then there's attention too, right?
00:14:06.559 --> 00:14:08.159
Because there are things that you can't get out of.
00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:13.039
You got to be at meetings or you gotta be, um, you gotta manage staff and you can't make everything.
00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:14.879
And there's that tension there as well, too.
00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:22.320
So that was kind of my journey through becoming bi vocational, um, also having the goal to go full-time ministry.
00:14:22.480 --> 00:14:25.840
I don't think I'll ever pass, you know, a 3,000-member church, right?
00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:37.039
So I'll always be in a setting to where there needs to be multiple streams of income because we're in the world, not of the world, and we got to have money to live in the world, but also making sure that my focus is always on that first identity pastor.
00:14:37.120 --> 00:14:41.679
So if I'm a janitor at Walmart, I'm a pastor who's a janitor at Walmart.
00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:51.759
Uh, if I'm a professor, if I'm a banker, that identity always flows, and that's just the means of God is providing the provision for my house through those different areas of bivocational aspect.
00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:53.440
I don't know if that answers the question or not.
00:14:53.759 --> 00:14:54.080
It did.
00:14:54.320 --> 00:14:57.759
It did even more so than I than I thought I was gonna hear.
00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:11.679
But it sounds like, unlike many young pastors, young preachers, who once they see the latest and greatest on the television, televangelist, or just believe there's a call, that that's gonna be me.
00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:12.879
It's gonna be full-time.
00:15:12.960 --> 00:15:24.639
It sounds like you didn't have that pressure on yourself to automatically and immediately jump out in full-time ministry, but rather there was more of a cultivation throughout the process.
00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:45.840
Can you can you talk to me a little bit more about how you were able to stay in a place of contentment, especially being in the Bible Belt, you know, Oklahoma, Texas, when you're seeing all these uh mega ministries around us, what's one of the things that that has helped you stay grounded as a bivocational pastor in both spaces?
00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:56.159
I think the contentment came from um seeing the background of a lot of the bigger ministries.
00:15:56.320 --> 00:16:13.519
Um and again, I'm not knocking or judging or critiquing, but my exposure um to you know convocations, Church of God in Christ convocations and you know, preaching at large churches by way of invitation, um, I got to see the good, bad, and the ugly.
00:16:13.679 --> 00:16:19.600
Um, and when I accepted the call fully sold out for Christ, I said, Lord, I'm I'm all the way in.
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:20.879
I don't want to half step.
00:16:20.960 --> 00:16:27.840
And so I witnessed a lot of uh powerful men of God who had secret sin.
00:16:28.240 --> 00:16:33.039
Um, not that anyone's without sin, but the the ministry became a drug.
00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:40.000
And ministry became more of fan base than it was saving souls.
00:16:40.159 --> 00:16:45.919
And so God exposed me to that, and that that breeded my my contentment.
00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:55.360
Like, Lord, I don't ever want to be, sure, I'll I would love to pastor a healthy church, but I'll I'll I'd rather have five who are saved and on fire for the Lord than 5,000.
00:16:55.519 --> 00:17:11.119
Um, and so I think that exposure keeps me content because, you know, you know, I went and visited a church years and years ago, and um the the conversation in the back before we came out was around how many numbers you running.
00:17:11.279 --> 00:17:13.200
Um Doc, how many numbers you're running?
00:17:13.359 --> 00:17:15.519
And and what's your annual budget, Doc?
00:17:15.599 --> 00:17:22.559
And you know, and hospitality suites at the conferences, uh, where, you know, and those things agree and all that.
00:17:22.799 --> 00:17:28.000
And I'm like, it becomes more about the man than actually the the ministry of Christ.
00:17:28.160 --> 00:17:30.000
And that's what keeps me content.
00:17:30.160 --> 00:17:34.720
Um and you know, and I tell people all the time, you know, I've been on a stage with Tony Evans.
00:17:34.880 --> 00:17:38.079
I I've preached to the thousand before, I've gone to large churches before.
00:17:38.240 --> 00:17:48.960
It does nothing for me because I preached the same as I did at the little country church in Brooksville, Oklahoma, where there were 18 people there, and they paid, they gave my wife a peach cobbler for my honorarium.
00:17:49.119 --> 00:17:55.039
I preached with the same fervor and conviction as I did to a thousand or as I do in the shower, right?
00:17:55.200 --> 00:18:05.200
Because again, those things feed the flesh, but I'm after following God in the spirit because again, he is called, how can they hear except they have a preacher and how can they preach unless they be sent?
00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:12.640
And so I take it so serious that I can't allow my flesh to get caught up in those things of bigger budgets and bigger facilities.
00:18:12.799 --> 00:18:14.000
Now, I'm still human.
00:18:14.079 --> 00:18:16.880
Uh, you know, I go to churches, I'm like, oh, that's nice, you know.
00:18:17.039 --> 00:18:21.279
Um, the little things you have on the back in your pews that to tap to give.
00:18:21.359 --> 00:18:22.319
I saw that when I was there.
00:18:22.480 --> 00:18:23.359
Like, we ought to have that.
00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:35.599
Like, so those things are good because I think in churches we should be supporting each other with best practices, but I never let the feeling of competition, because we're not in competition, we're in collaboration for the Great Commission.
00:18:35.680 --> 00:18:35.839
Amen.
00:18:36.079 --> 00:18:37.279
And that's what keeps me content.
00:18:37.440 --> 00:18:54.720
So, hearing that, what would you say to a young pastor, young preacher watching, young ministry worker watching this, who has more of the ambition than they do of really understanding the totality of the calling that you just talked about?
00:18:56.400 --> 00:18:57.519
Be careful.
00:18:57.759 --> 00:19:14.720
Um, God has gifted us um with intellect, with charisma, um, with public speaking ability, with you know the ability to um take um a text uh and illuminate it, whatever style it's in.
00:19:14.880 --> 00:19:19.519
But be careful that you don't allow the gift to become an idol.
00:19:20.079 --> 00:19:26.720
Because sometimes the gift becomes an idol and we're trying to fuel the idol because we like the pat on the back.
00:19:26.880 --> 00:19:35.839
Or, you know, the worst thing for a preacher is after ministering on Sunday, is to hear you preach that thing, Doc.
00:19:36.400 --> 00:19:40.960
It's not it's not about the doc and who preached, it's about who was glorified.
00:19:41.519 --> 00:19:50.319
And if we're not secure in ourselves and if we're not solely focused on doing what God has called us to do, that gift becomes an idol.
00:19:50.480 --> 00:19:53.680
And then we're looking for more amans when we preach.
00:19:53.759 --> 00:19:56.079
We're looking for, did we set the church on fire?
00:19:56.319 --> 00:20:04.559
I have grown, and early on, if it was amens and it was hot and popping, that to me was like I did good and God was pleased.
00:20:04.720 --> 00:20:06.160
No, no, no, no, no, no.
00:20:06.400 --> 00:20:11.680
What God is pleased with is when they actually go and live what we just said and execute it from the text.
00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:19.920
So now, um, and I tell wherever I read, I know my wife's gonna say amen, because that's my verbal validation that I'm in the right space or I'm going too long, right?
00:20:20.319 --> 00:20:23.039
But when people are quiet, that means they're thinking.
00:20:23.119 --> 00:20:27.920
So I'm much rather a quiet church than a whole bunch of amens in the choir jumping and shouting.
00:20:28.079 --> 00:20:29.519
Because then that's emotion.
00:20:29.759 --> 00:20:34.799
And emotion runs out, but anointing is long sustainable and long standing.
00:20:35.359 --> 00:20:37.839
And so we got to be careful, don't let the gift become an idol.
00:20:37.920 --> 00:20:42.559
Because when it becomes an idol, then you want bigger budgets, you want bigger facilities, you want more people.
00:20:42.799 --> 00:20:44.240
The angels rejoice over one.
00:20:44.319 --> 00:20:54.000
And so you can preach a powerful sermon to one person, and God is pleased where there are a thousand people, and God is like, oh, you just did a great public speech without any anointing or my spirit.
00:20:54.480 --> 00:20:57.039
I agree with 100% with everything you just said.
00:20:57.279 --> 00:21:00.400
I have a follow-up to ask you this.
00:21:00.640 --> 00:21:08.480
Uh can you give one or two of the nuggets that God dropped into your spirit that help you evolve to that practice?
00:21:08.559 --> 00:21:16.480
Because one of the things I've always appreciated about you as a young pastor leader, bivocational leader, is that you you get it.
00:21:16.960 --> 00:21:22.160
You're able to uh walk with kings and not lose the common touch.
00:21:22.480 --> 00:21:22.799
Amen.
00:21:24.079 --> 00:21:25.759
Yeah, that's a good question.
00:21:25.920 --> 00:21:30.319
Um I'd say one is falling in the trap.
00:21:30.720 --> 00:21:34.640
Um one of the first two or three years.
00:21:34.799 --> 00:21:44.079
Um before we move to Texas, uh, my wife will testify like we were getting invitations all over Oklahoma, Texas, different denominations.
00:21:44.240 --> 00:21:46.799
Um they got preached for all the different denominations.
00:21:46.960 --> 00:22:02.720
And so uh falling in the trap uh because you are articulate and you you're young and you're you're something different than you know their their traditional pastor, um, and you know, you're able to bring An old text to light and bring new revelation.
00:22:03.519 --> 00:22:08.880
Falling in the trap convicts you because then it's like, well, wait a minute.
00:22:09.200 --> 00:22:13.039
I'm it's becoming more about me than it is about him.
00:22:13.440 --> 00:22:18.720
Um and you know, I remember my first big honorarium was uh$500.
00:22:19.359 --> 00:22:22.720
And I thought, I only preached for 20 minutes and I got$500.
00:22:23.119 --> 00:22:24.079
You did the math.
00:22:24.400 --> 00:22:30.000
I'm like, man, oh Lord, I if I do two of these, like that's$1,000 a week, right?
00:22:30.079 --> 00:22:32.160
Like I can make something out of this.
00:22:32.480 --> 00:22:36.559
And then the conviction came, was like, wait a minute, are you doing it for the honorarium?
00:22:36.720 --> 00:22:42.640
Are you doing it because I called you and redeemed you and saved you, and now you're able to use your gift for my glory?
00:22:42.880 --> 00:22:48.720
And so that first nugget, I think, is if you fall, you're gonna fall into the trap because uh we're humans, right?
00:22:49.440 --> 00:22:52.240
Every man is right in his own eyes, as the Bible says, right?
00:22:52.640 --> 00:22:56.319
But recognize when you fall in it, what is your what is the root calling?
00:22:56.400 --> 00:23:04.640
Because I I know a lot of pastors now who are still in the trap, uh, who it's a business to them and not a ministry.
00:23:04.799 --> 00:23:09.440
Um and so, and that begins to impact the body, right?
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:29.039
Because the body takes on the head, and now you've got a whole body of believers who are superficial, who are validated by superficial words and facility and budgets, uh, because that is kind of the personality of who's preaching and teaching them, and because they're still stuck in that trap.
00:23:29.200 --> 00:23:33.440
I'd say the other thing too is um you are the company you keep.
00:23:33.680 --> 00:23:39.680
Um before I accepted the call, I loved reading the word of God, right?
00:23:39.839 --> 00:23:44.000
Uh I love I'm I love reading history, I love knowing things.
00:23:44.160 --> 00:23:49.359
Um, and so I've always hung around, uh, no offense, old pastors.
00:23:49.599 --> 00:23:52.480
Uh, you know, that that's just who I grew up older.
00:23:52.720 --> 00:23:54.960
Older, right now, who I grew up around.
00:23:55.039 --> 00:23:58.640
And so my mannerisms uh reflect that, right?
00:23:58.799 --> 00:24:07.680
Um the decorum that we have in the sanctuary reflect that of the old school of the 80s and 90s pastors who wore three-piece suits, right?
00:24:07.759 --> 00:24:16.000
Who uh, you know, who wore black on first Sunday, who uh who came to the pulpit and kneeled before they even said anything to anybody.
00:24:16.480 --> 00:24:20.880
So I was around that, and that company that inspired and influenced me.
00:24:20.960 --> 00:24:34.000
And some the pastors, the older mentors who are now gone on the glory, told me, know that Bible back and forth, be able to give an answer, not your opinion, not a commentary, but what does the word of God say?
00:24:34.160 --> 00:24:40.480
And so every time I stand, um and I know it's dangerous now with AI, because AI will produce a whole three-point sermon for you.
00:24:40.720 --> 00:24:43.519
AI is a supplement, but it should not be a replacement.
00:24:43.680 --> 00:24:55.279
And so studying the word of God, knowing it in and out, not even for the people, but for yourself, because I believe the company you keep around you will tell you, hey, you might need to study a little bit more.
00:24:55.359 --> 00:24:58.079
Or, hey, how about we consider this concept a little bit more?
00:24:58.319 --> 00:25:01.119
Uh, one of my first years preaching, I preached a sermon.
00:25:01.200 --> 00:25:04.000
I in my mind, I preached the paint off the walls.
00:25:04.079 --> 00:25:12.960
Um, and then my pastor at the time was my childhood pastor uh before he had passed, uh, put me in the office, and I'm thinking I'm gonna get pat on the back and great job.
00:25:13.119 --> 00:25:24.160
Uh and he said, You need to study a little bit more, less shouting, less celebration, less cheerleading, and more exegesis, and more homeletics and hermeneutics.
00:25:24.400 --> 00:25:26.880
And you did good, but there's more work to do.
00:25:26.960 --> 00:25:28.400
And so I've always taken that with me.
00:25:28.559 --> 00:25:31.440
So the company you keep will be honest with you.
00:25:31.599 --> 00:25:33.599
They will celebrate you, but be honest with you.
00:25:33.759 --> 00:25:40.079
And he's the one that said, hey, you know, there's a call on your life, and people are going to respond and listen to you, but don't take that lightly.
00:25:40.240 --> 00:25:42.160
Take that opportunity and build something with that.
00:25:42.240 --> 00:25:54.960
And so that's why to this day, when I'm preparing for a sermon, commentary, studying, praying, fasting, seeking the will of God, and being sensitive to the Holy Spirit when I arrive at the pulpit, because sometimes the spirit wants to do other things, that's maturity as well.
00:25:55.119 --> 00:25:58.640
That says, Lord, I yield more to you than what I prepared.
00:25:58.799 --> 00:26:02.559
Because sometimes arrogance says, Well, I did all this study and labor, they need to hear these three points.
00:26:02.640 --> 00:26:05.279
And sometimes the spirit says, No, one is enough, let me work.
00:26:05.440 --> 00:26:08.880
And I think that comes from the company you keep and not fall in the trap if I could get those.
00:26:09.759 --> 00:26:11.039
That that is awesome.
00:26:11.200 --> 00:26:23.920
And I hope uh someone's watching who heard that, not just young, but it's a trap even in the social media day for those of us who are seasoned to not forget to keep the main thing, the main thing.
00:26:24.559 --> 00:26:34.000
Uh that that being shared, one of the questions I get quite a bit from 40-40 pastors and church leaders is how do you manage it all in a week?
00:26:34.319 --> 00:26:44.400
Can you talk to us a little bit about what's a not a perfect week, but what's a week, a typical week, uh, day of the week, and uh, how does that look?
00:26:44.480 --> 00:26:49.039
And how do you manage the professor, the pulpit, and the preacher?
00:26:49.519 --> 00:26:50.960
It's a loaded question.
00:26:51.119 --> 00:26:52.960
Um it's a lot.
00:26:53.039 --> 00:27:08.079
Um, and one of the ways is obviously uh my wife is a planner in her way her brain works, and so what I leveraging my my helpmate, um, because I'm called the pastor, she's not.
00:27:08.319 --> 00:27:10.559
But her call is to me as her husband.
00:27:10.720 --> 00:27:15.680
And so I leverage her gifting for the betterment of my ministry.
00:27:15.759 --> 00:27:26.720
So I'll give her here's all the things that need to be done, and she'll slot it and allocate time and do all that, um, along with my first ministry as a pastor is my family.
00:27:26.960 --> 00:27:27.599
Period.
00:27:27.759 --> 00:27:29.039
That's my first ministry.
00:27:29.200 --> 00:27:38.559
So when the fall, when we have, you know, high school football on Fridays, uh, we got flag football on Thursdays, we got gymnastics across all five kids.
00:27:38.880 --> 00:27:44.720
My first ministry, I'm not an effective pastor in the pulpit if I'm not pastoring at home properly.
00:27:44.799 --> 00:27:46.960
That's with my marriage and with my family.
00:27:47.119 --> 00:27:49.119
And so that takes priority.
00:27:49.279 --> 00:27:53.279
And that also, for me, that's where a lot of my preaching material comes from.
00:27:53.359 --> 00:27:57.680
My illustration examples, because God speaks to me through my children or at the football field.
00:27:57.759 --> 00:27:58.880
I see an illustration there.
00:27:58.960 --> 00:28:00.880
I'm like, oh, there's my point right there.
00:28:01.039 --> 00:28:03.200
Um, but that's my first ministry.
00:28:03.440 --> 00:28:07.519
So if I can encourage anybody, God calls us first to our family.
00:28:07.680 --> 00:28:12.079
If if a man's home's not right, he's not fit to rule the kingdom, the house of the Lord.
00:28:12.240 --> 00:28:15.920
And so your marriage got to be right before the Lord in covenant.
00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:18.079
Your children, how your parent has to be right.
00:28:18.319 --> 00:28:25.200
So I always make sure that time is prioritized throughout my week, whatever that looks like, whether it's a game or practice, pickup, drop off.
00:28:25.599 --> 00:28:29.759
So, so talk to us a little bit about your scheduling process.
00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:31.119
I know you you work with the wife.
00:28:31.279 --> 00:28:35.359
Do you guys have some guarded time for kid pickup?
00:28:35.920 --> 00:28:37.039
Are you involved in that as well?
00:28:37.119 --> 00:28:43.200
And I'm asking the question because there's so many out there watching who so get where you're you are in your world with the multiple kids.
00:28:43.279 --> 00:28:44.319
You said five kids.
00:28:44.480 --> 00:28:46.079
Five is a number of grace, right?
00:28:46.160 --> 00:28:49.599
But it takes grace to get all those kids where they need to go and the wife.
00:28:49.759 --> 00:28:56.799
And we say a lot that our ministry first is at the marriage and with the family, but a lot of us don't always do that.
00:28:56.960 --> 00:29:00.799
So please continue to share the nuggets to how you're doing that successfully.
00:29:01.119 --> 00:29:03.440
What we do is obviously we use technology.
00:29:03.519 --> 00:29:06.559
Uh, we got a skylight calendar where everything is loaded in there.
00:29:06.720 --> 00:29:09.920
Um, here's where this person is supposed to be, that person's supposed to be.
00:29:10.079 --> 00:29:10.720
Is it together?
00:29:10.799 --> 00:29:12.000
Is it divide and conquer?
00:29:12.079 --> 00:29:12.960
And we allocate that.
00:29:13.119 --> 00:29:16.240
We actually have a uh every Sunday, we look at the week ahead.
00:29:16.319 --> 00:29:17.279
Here's what's happening.
00:29:17.519 --> 00:29:23.680
If I am preaching that week, she knows that we build in time where I have some time alone with the Lord.
00:29:23.839 --> 00:29:29.759
I have that already, but specific time uh to you know work through uh my sermon prep.
00:29:29.839 --> 00:29:32.240
And I'll kind of talk about that in detail here in a little bit.
00:29:32.400 --> 00:29:34.480
Um, and then we take it day by day.
00:29:34.559 --> 00:29:37.680
So, like a Monday, it may be a pickup or drop off for me.
00:29:37.759 --> 00:29:44.880
Um, and then what we try to do is wake up early to do our Bible study time, our individual study time, starting at 5:30 a.m., get up early.
00:29:44.960 --> 00:29:51.359
So that way that's done, and that makes our day go better because we spend time with the Lord, and then we could focus on the kids' stuff.
00:29:51.599 --> 00:29:54.880
Now, one of the blessings of being in education is the flexible schedule.
00:29:55.039 --> 00:29:57.920
So my teaching schedule is Tuesday, Thursdays.
00:29:58.160 --> 00:30:04.160
So I drive from Frisco to Fort Worth, which is an hour and 20 minutes one way, but I'm out there all day.
00:30:04.319 --> 00:30:09.680
And then Monday, Wednesday, Friday are days that I have office hours on Zoom or online or meetings.
00:30:09.839 --> 00:30:14.960
And so that flexibility gives me some things that I can move around versus a traditional eight to five.
00:30:15.039 --> 00:30:17.119
So that's just the way my setup is.
00:30:17.279 --> 00:30:23.440
But I even think a person with a traditional eight to five could still build in during their lunchtime, um, during break time.
00:30:23.839 --> 00:30:31.440
Um when I was a dean, what I would do is during my lunchtime, I would go, you know, find a quiet space, and then that's where I'll start studying scripture.
00:30:31.599 --> 00:30:35.200
So there's ways to work around it if you don't have the flexibility per se.
00:30:35.440 --> 00:30:38.720
What I do driving to work, I listen to Bible on tape, right?
00:30:38.880 --> 00:30:49.440
I listen to sermons on YouTube to monopolize that time or podcast to monopolize that time to get something in versus listen to the sports channel or the RB channel, right?
00:30:49.599 --> 00:30:51.759
Let's make good use of the time since we're in the car.
00:30:51.839 --> 00:30:55.119
So there's ways to use the time to prepare for the week.
00:30:55.279 --> 00:30:57.759
So that's the family component, focused on the family.
00:30:58.000 --> 00:31:10.400
If I know big things are coming up back to back, I'll shift things around to make sure that I get my time with the Lord, uh, specific time, me and my wife connection time, and time with the kids to keep things around.
00:31:10.480 --> 00:31:14.480
But you just gotta know a person who doesn't plan is set up to fail.
00:31:14.559 --> 00:31:20.000
So you gotta have, you gotta write, even if you just write stuff down, because you don't want time will manage you if you don't manage it.
00:31:20.240 --> 00:31:21.039
Yes, yes, sir.
00:31:21.279 --> 00:31:22.720
Not all weeks I'm preaching.
00:31:22.880 --> 00:31:25.440
Um, you know, in February I did four straight.
00:31:25.599 --> 00:31:34.559
And so what that looked like is we did our normal house operation stuff, times with the kids and marriage stuff, and then also other things, you know.
00:31:34.720 --> 00:31:38.240
But what I did was I made sure to sometimes I do a series.
00:31:38.400 --> 00:31:42.319
I know, hey, I'm gonna spend four weeks here, which helps the preacher, right?
00:31:42.480 --> 00:31:46.880
Um, other times there's specific things that I feel like the Lord wants to say.
00:31:47.200 --> 00:31:56.000
So on Monday and Tuesday, uh one of my old mentors told me this you actually start preparing for the next sermon when you finish the one you just did.
00:31:56.240 --> 00:32:00.319
So as soon as I'm done on Sunday, I'm already preparing for the next one.
00:32:00.480 --> 00:32:04.480
Whether that's an outflow of what we just did or something new.
00:32:04.640 --> 00:32:12.960
So Monday and Tuesday is just it's reading, it's opening the Bible, reading line for line scripture, meditating on the word, praying through it.
00:32:13.119 --> 00:32:15.440
Um, that's what I take Monday and Tuesday for.
00:32:15.680 --> 00:32:19.599
Wednesday, I'll go to commentaries to see kind of what others have to say.
00:32:19.680 --> 00:32:25.599
Um, historical context, what's going on historically, kind of that hermeneutic uh exegesis process.
00:32:25.839 --> 00:32:27.839
Thursdays, I'm putting it all together.
00:32:28.000 --> 00:32:29.200
I preach in three points.
00:32:29.359 --> 00:32:30.559
That's just how I was taught.
00:32:30.720 --> 00:32:32.000
Three points to the point, right?
00:32:32.079 --> 00:32:33.279
There's the Baptist identity there.
00:32:34.720 --> 00:32:36.319
You know, it's just who we are.
00:32:36.480 --> 00:32:39.680
Um, and then Friday, I take time to fast over it.
00:32:39.839 --> 00:32:43.920
And my goal is by Saturday, it's complete, then I don't have to touch it.
00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:48.160
Uh, because I want Saturday not to be stressing to going into Sunday.
00:32:48.240 --> 00:32:56.400
Now, there may be some tweaks or something I think of to add in or an illustration, but I like to not have the pressure on Saturday where I can just have a normal Saturday evening.
00:32:56.559 --> 00:33:03.200
Not always, but often to where I can just I can sleep normal, get up refreshed, and then be in worship on Sunday.
00:33:03.359 --> 00:33:07.119
I'm one that I like to be a part of praise and worship, not to come out afterwards.
00:33:07.279 --> 00:33:09.119
Because I believe that's a part of the ministry aspect.
00:33:09.200 --> 00:33:11.519
And I believe people need to see their pastor in worship.
00:33:11.680 --> 00:33:13.920
Um that way the sermon should be done.
00:33:14.000 --> 00:33:28.480
Now, God always speaks, He there's times when he'll change things up, when he'll drop things in, and you make those edits, but for the bulk of everything, that the context and kind of the core, I like to have all that done by Friday's end uh to kind of merge into that.
00:33:28.559 --> 00:33:34.880
And so one thing that I learned early on is that pastors who are truly called by God, we don't prepare to preach.
00:33:35.519 --> 00:33:37.759
We come out of devotion into preaching.
00:33:38.160 --> 00:33:40.480
For the life of the overflow.
00:33:40.720 --> 00:33:41.039
Right.
00:33:41.279 --> 00:33:43.119
We should already be in the word every day.
00:33:43.200 --> 00:33:44.880
We should already have things to share.
00:33:45.039 --> 00:33:48.480
We should be preparing, we should come out of devotion into sharing.
00:33:48.559 --> 00:33:50.640
So that's kind of the process I go through.
00:33:50.880 --> 00:33:54.319
Let me ask you a follow-up, and I I don't mean it to be a loaded question.
00:33:54.400 --> 00:33:55.279
It just came.
00:33:55.759 --> 00:34:00.880
So, if I were to ask your wife, what's one thing that Dr.
00:34:00.960 --> 00:34:12.639
Chapman does that allows you and the children to celebrate and not resent him being in ministry as a bivocational pastor, what would she say?
00:34:13.280 --> 00:34:14.719
That's a good question.
00:34:17.039 --> 00:34:23.679
Oh, probably the priority of them over ministry.
00:34:24.000 --> 00:34:26.480
I mean, I know that's not very common.
00:34:26.639 --> 00:34:36.880
Um, and I would say I, you know, I've watched how you move uh with my sister uh and over the years and the priority of the marriage and family in ministry.
00:34:36.960 --> 00:34:39.119
Um it's like we're doing it together.
00:34:39.280 --> 00:34:42.639
Um while I'm the one that's called, we're doing it together.
00:34:42.719 --> 00:34:47.519
And so when we get to church on Sundays, I make sure my wife is good before I go to the office.
00:34:47.760 --> 00:34:48.800
Do you need anything?
00:34:48.880 --> 00:34:49.199
Right.
00:34:49.360 --> 00:34:54.880
Uh I'll make sure, you know, my kids are church kids, so when we pull up, they all run it off to their classes they know to be, you know.
00:34:55.039 --> 00:35:09.920
Um, but the priority of them over ministry, because I've witnessed growing up so many who didn't prioritize their families or their marriages, and then that created uh gaps and pitfalls that they fell into.
00:35:10.239 --> 00:35:19.440
Um and so I think that would be the thing is that uh whenever we travel to a place, uh, you know, the tradition of the pastor goes to the office and sits in the back and then comes out.
00:35:19.519 --> 00:35:21.519
No, I'll make sure my family's good.
00:35:21.679 --> 00:35:24.559
Uh and we have an armor bearer with us as well, too.
00:35:24.719 --> 00:35:32.159
But um, and even those who travel with me, like I'll make sure my people are good before I go do any of that because that's my first calling.
00:35:32.239 --> 00:35:37.920
And if they're not good, then I can't preach well, I can't lead well because we got to come back home, right?
00:35:38.000 --> 00:35:42.400
Um and there's uh I think value in prioritizing.
00:35:42.559 --> 00:35:50.239
And again, a lot don't do that now because, you know, yes, you're full-time, and yes, and I've heard my friends say, well, they're paying me.
00:35:50.400 --> 00:35:51.519
Yeah, they're paying you.
00:35:51.679 --> 00:36:03.519
But I think a true biblically literate church will appreciate a pastor who prioritizes his wife and his family over the ministry because they're not in competition.
00:36:03.760 --> 00:36:07.360
If I don't do this well per the Bible, then I can't do this well.
00:36:07.519 --> 00:36:09.119
Um, not to say that we don't have arguments.
00:36:09.199 --> 00:36:11.039
There's some Sundays we pull up the church arguing.
00:36:11.199 --> 00:36:11.360
Amen.
00:36:11.599 --> 00:36:13.760
Glory to God, Holy Spirit-inspired fellowship.
00:36:14.239 --> 00:36:14.559
Amen.
00:36:14.960 --> 00:36:19.039
But we in covenant, and we know when we go in here, we together, we are one.
00:36:19.280 --> 00:36:27.760
Uh, but the priority first is my calling, relationship with God, then my wife and my children, then the church, and then everything else flows from that.
00:36:28.079 --> 00:36:28.719
That's so good.
00:36:28.800 --> 00:36:37.519
And I hope our listeners are getting that, because that's something that that is so critical to all of our ministries, is having that base.
00:36:38.000 --> 00:36:42.159
I want to go a little bit further on the practical with this schedule.
00:36:42.400 --> 00:36:59.039
For instance, when there is, I know I I can appreciate the academic schedule, but what happens when there is a crisis at the church and you're in class or and not necessarily in class, but a situation where there's a tension between one pulls you from the other?
00:36:59.440 --> 00:37:02.000
Has there ever been a situation like that and how have you handled that?
00:37:02.079 --> 00:37:03.920
And what advice would you have for others?
00:37:04.639 --> 00:37:08.159
You know, and it's sometimes, again, sometimes it's flexible, sometimes it's not.
00:37:08.239 --> 00:37:13.199
And I'm sensitive to the fact that, you know, those of us in the education kind of have a blessed situation.
00:37:13.360 --> 00:37:19.679
But I have, you know, colleagues who work eight to fives in high-demanding jobs and still pastoring churches.
00:37:19.840 --> 00:37:20.960
So very sensitive to that.
00:37:21.039 --> 00:37:30.719
And I think that's that's that tension uh because there's a crisis that requires your presence and attention, but then there's what the place pays you to do.
00:37:30.800 --> 00:37:32.960
Um, and so how do you navigate that?
00:37:33.199 --> 00:37:41.360
Um, the way I've done that over the years when that existed is the um assessment, um, assess and refer.
00:37:41.599 --> 00:37:44.400
I think that's where it comes around having strong leaders.
00:37:44.639 --> 00:37:57.519
You know, I was a situation to where we had one of our uh powerful brothers, deacon brethren, uh, who was just the salt of the earth, was kind of uh the glue of our brotherhood church, passed away unexpectedly.
00:37:57.760 --> 00:38:03.599
I'm in the office, way in Fort Worth, family, had young boys, family.
00:38:03.679 --> 00:38:05.599
Uh he was connected in a lot of ways.
00:38:05.840 --> 00:38:07.440
How are we gonna navigate?
00:38:07.679 --> 00:38:12.480
And so I've got a meeting that I got to go to with Dean and all that.
00:38:12.719 --> 00:38:17.599
They may understand, but they may not, because I can't say, hey, I have a ministry.
00:38:17.840 --> 00:38:20.480
They may not, you know, then it's gonna get weird there.
00:38:20.800 --> 00:38:34.800
Um, so assess and refer what requires me to actually come home, or what requires me that I can wait, or is there someone I trust who can kind of stand in the gap until I can get there?
00:38:35.039 --> 00:38:38.880
And I think that's where strong leadership and strong partnerships come in.
00:38:39.119 --> 00:38:41.599
Um and navigate in technology.
00:38:41.760 --> 00:38:43.840
Does my present physical presence need to be there?
00:38:43.920 --> 00:38:44.480
Or can we zoom?
00:38:44.719 --> 00:38:48.000
Can we hop on a phone call or FaceTime and be present?
00:38:48.159 --> 00:38:50.960
And then I can reassure, hey, here's where I'm at, what I'm doing.
00:38:51.199 --> 00:39:03.280
I'll be there at this time, and then we can take it further, or have a great associate or assistants, or armor bearers, or somebody who you know can step in as a representative to help manage it till you're present there.
00:39:03.440 --> 00:39:05.119
But then that tension is there.
00:39:05.280 --> 00:39:08.800
Um, but then there are times when it's like, hey, no, I need to be there.
00:39:08.960 --> 00:39:11.840
So I'm going to, you know, use my flexibility.
00:39:12.000 --> 00:39:13.760
Hey, I gotta miss this meeting.
00:39:13.840 --> 00:39:14.960
Here's what's going on.
00:39:15.119 --> 00:39:18.960
Hope you understand, or use PTO or Sickly, those of that nature.
00:39:19.119 --> 00:39:22.000
And that's again, that's kind of the ebb and flow of being bivocational.
00:39:22.159 --> 00:39:23.519
You just kind of got to navigate that.
00:39:23.760 --> 00:39:33.679
One of the things I think that I would encourage bivocational pastors who are new or trying to figure it out, is find a way to communicate that you're bivocational in those spaces.
00:39:34.000 --> 00:39:37.679
Everywhere I've ever worked, people have known that I'm a pastor.
00:39:38.239 --> 00:39:47.119
And generally, since we live in a culture where ministry and churches and faith people have an understanding of that, they know, oh, you're a pastor.
00:39:47.199 --> 00:39:51.840
They may not know executive pastor, senior pastor, associate, they may not know those nuances.
00:39:52.400 --> 00:39:58.239
But they know a pastor, there's gonna be some kind of push and pull involved with that.
00:39:58.400 --> 00:40:01.840
Um, so that has helped as well, too, knowing that I'm a pastor.
00:40:01.920 --> 00:40:03.360
Oh, why isn't Chapman here today?
00:40:03.519 --> 00:40:09.039
Well, he is a pastor, so this is you know one of the things he can't go on the retreat this weekend because he's he's pastoring a church.
00:40:09.199 --> 00:40:10.400
And they're sensitive to that.
00:40:10.480 --> 00:40:23.199
And I found most people, when they know, uh, they're respectful of that, not only because, you know, legally they can't push back too much against that, but also I think respectably and culturally, we we still have respect for those, the men of the cloth.
00:40:24.719 --> 00:40:38.719
Has there ever been a time where there's been a, for lack of a better phrase, a fire at the university while you were at the church and and vice versa, do you handle it the same way the leadership at the church covering while you're having to go back to the campus?
00:40:40.000 --> 00:40:51.599
Those are there's one day when, you know, I left Fort Worth to Frisco, did what needed to handle here, and then went back to Fort Worth, and what I thought had handled was a fixed weapon and had to go back.
00:40:51.840 --> 00:40:59.920
But uh, thank the Lord for safe travels on the highways and byways and for paying the toll bill, because some days it's like that, because you got to be both places.
00:41:00.079 --> 00:41:03.280
Um He gives us the grace to be both places and to handle things.
00:41:03.360 --> 00:41:11.599
Uh, but collaborate, have a team, and sometimes it just needs to be you need to be stretched in because ministry is work, and sometimes there is a stretching.
00:41:12.000 --> 00:41:12.159
It is.
00:41:12.400 --> 00:41:15.920
Those days aren't frequent, but they do happen, and there is that tension.
00:41:16.639 --> 00:41:18.559
I used to tease you'd appreciate this.
00:41:18.800 --> 00:41:24.880
I used to tease that they built the George Bush here in Grand Prairie just for me, just so I can get from here to the college quickly.
00:41:26.320 --> 00:41:37.599
I want to now talk a little bit more about not just the the challenge of both worlds, but what about the blessings and the benefits of both worlds?
00:41:37.840 --> 00:41:49.199
What, in particular, what has being a bivocational pastor and being a professor, how has being a professor helped you be a better pastor, and then vice versa?
00:41:49.519 --> 00:41:51.360
That's a that's a beautiful question.
00:41:51.440 --> 00:41:58.079
Um so I found out early on that my mission field was 18 to 21 year olds.
00:41:58.480 --> 00:42:13.920
Um and because understanding my own faith walk going to college and questioning, you know, I'm told 18 years, you believe this, you believe this, and then you get there and like find out all some stuff was man-made, some stuff was actually showed to me in the Bible.
00:42:14.000 --> 00:42:17.440
Um, you know, because you know, growing up that Baphocostal, right?
00:42:17.519 --> 00:42:20.000
You know, you're going to hell for everything and don't do this, don't do that.
00:42:20.079 --> 00:42:22.719
And I'm like, y'all just told me you didn't show me.
00:42:22.880 --> 00:42:34.000
And so once I went through that process myself, I didn't want to be the next pastor who just told you something but didn't show you in the Bible what God says about it.
00:42:34.239 --> 00:42:41.760
And so I committed to studying scripture to where if there's a reason why you shouldn't do it, here's why, and here's the impact.
00:42:42.000 --> 00:42:46.400
And so, 18 to 21-year-olds, uh, that's just been my mission field.
00:42:46.480 --> 00:42:58.239
And so, public universities, private universities, I've been able to pray with them, walk alongside them in the most critical juncture in their lives, which sets the foundation for the next season of their faith.
00:42:58.480 --> 00:43:05.039
And so that has been a blessing because, you know, I've got students who'll come to me years later, getting married, said, Hey, Dr.
00:43:05.119 --> 00:43:10.639
Chapman, uh, I know you were, you talked about covenant marriage and being, you know, a covenant husband or a covenant wife.
00:43:10.800 --> 00:43:13.280
Will you pray for me or will you counsel us?
00:43:13.440 --> 00:43:16.079
Um, and I'm like, and these are non-believers, right?
00:43:16.320 --> 00:43:19.440
Students who weren't part of the faith uh but just knew I was a pastor.
00:43:19.599 --> 00:43:22.800
Um so again, that's the opportunities that flow from that.
00:43:23.039 --> 00:43:42.639
Even across campus, um, and then with partners, um uh college university partners, you know, I'm sitting at a meeting with JP Morgan Chase bankers uh for mentoring programs, and they know I'm a pastor, and that it either starts a conversation like, hey, I serve in ministry, or they have questions like, hey, um, what do you think about the solar eclipse?
00:43:42.719 --> 00:43:43.760
Is that God or not?
00:43:43.840 --> 00:43:50.320
And so we're able to start having conversations um that we wouldn't otherwise have that maybe just be about business.
00:43:50.400 --> 00:43:58.639
And so I believe that God has gifted us to be in different spaces, but use the gifts for his glory.
00:43:58.719 --> 00:44:00.800
So when I'm in the class, I'm preaching.
00:44:00.880 --> 00:44:02.320
When I'm in the pulpit, I'm teaching.
00:44:02.480 --> 00:44:04.239
But also when I'm in the classroom, I'm teaching.
00:44:04.320 --> 00:44:05.760
When I'm in the pulpit, I'm I'm preaching.
00:44:05.920 --> 00:44:08.719
So it again, it it ebbs and flows for me.
00:44:09.119 --> 00:44:16.960
But it's it's a blessing because everybody, for me, everybody needs to be taught and everybody has to be preached to.
00:44:17.119 --> 00:44:19.440
And so I just change, I change the audience out.
00:44:19.519 --> 00:44:24.320
Sometimes it's in a management class, sometimes it's in the pulpit, but it's still the same focus.
00:44:24.480 --> 00:44:29.679
I'm saying how God can use you as a managed business, as a future CEO of a major Fortune 100.
00:44:29.760 --> 00:44:35.760
Here's how God can use you, versus in the pulpit, here's what the scripture says on how to live a better life.
00:44:36.079 --> 00:44:50.960
Now I know you have experience both teaching and leading at TCU, which is a Christian school, but you've also had experience at Oklahoma University, University of Oklahoma, and Dallas College, which are not necessarily Christian schools.
00:44:51.199 --> 00:44:59.360
Can you talk a little bit about the difference in being in one versus the other as it relates to how you operate as a bivocational pastor?
00:44:59.679 --> 00:45:01.119
So that's a great question.
00:45:01.280 --> 00:45:02.639
And people ask me that all the time.
00:45:02.800 --> 00:45:11.679
How are you a pastor at a University of Oklahoma, a public institution where they do things the culture is against Christianity and against the Bible?
00:45:11.840 --> 00:45:18.880
And my and they blow their mind on tell them I have more ministry opportunities at public institutions than I ever did at Christians.
00:45:20.000 --> 00:45:22.079
And so we're in the world, not of the world.
00:45:22.239 --> 00:45:27.039
Let your light so shine before men so they may see your good works, which glorify our Father in heaven.
00:45:27.280 --> 00:45:28.800
So that's the problem.
00:45:29.039 --> 00:45:34.159
We become secluded and we become so insular that we don't want anything to do with them.
00:45:34.400 --> 00:45:34.800
Guess what?
00:45:34.880 --> 00:45:37.039
Jesus died for them just as much as he died us.
00:45:37.199 --> 00:45:40.880
And just like somebody came and got me, I'm that light.
00:45:40.960 --> 00:45:45.760
So yes, they have a professor and they may be doing something that is counter to scripture.
00:45:45.920 --> 00:45:50.239
They have a professor who's not going to judge them, but who's going to love the hell out of them, right?
00:45:50.480 --> 00:45:57.119
And I had many opportunities of gender identity or racism, all the things that are counter to scripture.
00:45:57.280 --> 00:46:06.000
And many opportunities where people came to me at first expecting me to do like the loud Christians do and judge you and critique you and condemn you to hell.
00:46:06.239 --> 00:46:13.360
Yes, there is a real hell, but my Bible teaches me that Jesus died for all, whosoever will let them come, and there's an opportunity to minister there.
00:46:13.440 --> 00:46:15.760
I may be planting the seed, I may be watering.
00:46:16.239 --> 00:46:20.159
That's for God to decide, but I need to be the light in those spaces.
00:46:20.320 --> 00:46:24.079
Again, we are believers first, and then our profession second.
00:46:24.239 --> 00:46:33.760
So whether you work for the city or whether you work for the bank, you're a believer first, and then God will provide opportunities in the bank for you to minister, right?
00:46:34.000 --> 00:46:37.039
He'll provide opportunities for you working for the city, the water department.
00:46:37.119 --> 00:46:38.000
He'll provide opportunities.
00:46:38.079 --> 00:46:42.960
And that's what I tell our church all the time, because we have a vast people working in different fields.
00:46:43.280 --> 00:46:46.239
One of our sisters runs the City of Frisco Water Department.
00:46:46.320 --> 00:46:53.679
And so she's able to minister to people through her gifting and not even know through the call center, she's able to say, have a blessed day.
00:46:53.840 --> 00:46:58.960
Or she's able to say, hey, uh, this person just called in, uh struggling to pay a bill.
00:46:59.039 --> 00:47:02.400
She's able to refer them to Christian resources to pay their bills.
00:47:03.119 --> 00:47:07.119
And then, oh, by the way, they had a conversation about how Jesus is a provider and they get saved.
00:47:07.199 --> 00:47:13.760
So again, we're believers first in the world, not of the world, and God has called us to shine our light in these public spaces.
00:47:13.840 --> 00:47:15.360
So if not us, then who?
00:47:15.519 --> 00:47:31.039
And so I love going into places that are unsaved and that they're lost, left out, left behind, because it gives me an opportunity to not condemn people to hell, but to tell them about a man named Jesus who can save them from their sins and can be their Lord in this life and savior in the next.
00:47:31.199 --> 00:47:32.159
So I love it.
00:47:32.239 --> 00:47:35.440
Most people don't like they all just need to be in an insert Christian environment.
00:47:35.679 --> 00:47:37.760
Yeah, but he didn't save us to stay put.
00:47:37.840 --> 00:47:39.280
No, he saved us to go out and serve.
00:47:39.360 --> 00:47:40.559
So let me ask you this follow-up.
00:47:40.800 --> 00:47:50.639
Do you believe, being at a Christian institution, that sometimes people can become too comfortable because, quote unquote, it is a Christian institution or a business, a Christian-owned business?
00:47:50.800 --> 00:47:52.239
What are your thoughts related to that?
00:47:52.559 --> 00:47:53.360
No, absolutely.
00:47:53.519 --> 00:47:56.800
I think sometimes it becomes an excuse.
00:47:57.119 --> 00:48:02.719
Um, because we're Christian, we we assume that everybody is saved because we're Christian.
00:48:03.039 --> 00:48:06.719
I'm not naive to think that everybody showing up on Sunday morning is saved.
00:48:06.880 --> 00:48:14.719
Some do it out of tradition, some do it out of habit, some do it out of public pressure, but not everybody sitting in our seats on Sunday, they're saved, right?
00:48:14.960 --> 00:48:22.559
And so if that is the case for God's church, and God even knows that, think about all the other institutions, social institutions.
00:48:22.639 --> 00:48:25.360
We have a natural need to belong, Maslow's hierarchy need.
00:48:25.519 --> 00:48:27.119
So we're going to belong to something, show up.
00:48:27.199 --> 00:48:31.519
So win and wrong, do as the Roman, so yeah, I'm gonna go to chapel because everybody else is going to chapel.
00:48:31.679 --> 00:48:34.400
That don't mean I confessed with my mouth and believed in my heart.
00:48:34.639 --> 00:48:39.840
And so, even in the Christian spaces, even in church, there's a book called The Unsaved Christian.
00:48:40.000 --> 00:48:42.239
Like, we still have to disciple.
00:48:42.400 --> 00:48:43.039
We still have to.
00:48:43.119 --> 00:48:48.960
That's why the old church called rededications on Sundays is because I knew it but fell away from it.
00:48:49.119 --> 00:48:56.239
So we've got to not be naive to think just because Christian is in the name that it's in the hearts of the people who come there or who belong to the organization.
00:48:56.639 --> 00:49:02.559
I want to ask you this question, simply hearing about your sweet spot with young people.
00:49:02.800 --> 00:49:17.440
Some of the latest research from Barnes showed that young men, those teenage to early 20 years, they are coming to the church and coming to Christ at a much greater rate than historically young ladies.
00:49:17.679 --> 00:49:24.800
I'd love to hear your insight on what you think or what you've seen has been some of the rationale related to that research.
00:49:25.199 --> 00:49:25.519
Yeah.
00:49:25.679 --> 00:49:31.840
Um, so my research was in um male identity in Christian universities.
00:49:32.000 --> 00:49:46.239
Um, and what we found is that there the outcome from uh FCA and having men mentors who were believers, we're now starting to see that harvest.
00:49:47.519 --> 00:49:51.599
Because my softball coach was also a deacon at the church, right?
00:49:51.840 --> 00:49:56.320
Or my my basketball literally coach also served in ministry.
00:49:56.559 --> 00:50:18.400
And so the family may not have been of the faith, but that influence, because there's a lot of research that says about the male influence and mentorship and who we connect as, you know, our growing up our heroes, I believe we're now seeing that harvest now from the 2000s and the the focus on, you know, those um those men who are in our community.
00:50:18.480 --> 00:50:27.440
That's why it's important for men to stand up in the community who were pouring into volunteering at games and being a part of students' lives.
00:50:27.840 --> 00:50:34.719
We're now seeing that outcome, that harvest, where those young men now are questioning the existence.
00:50:34.880 --> 00:50:35.440
Is it real?
00:50:35.519 --> 00:50:36.239
What is this?
00:50:36.480 --> 00:50:43.440
And the Holy Spirit is revealing to them, yes, it's real, and now they're flocking to a place to answer that question, which is the local church.
00:50:43.679 --> 00:50:49.119
Now, the challenge is gonna be how we respond to them because they're not gonna come in in three-piece suits.
00:50:49.280 --> 00:50:56.639
Um, and some of them will come in with tats and earrings and both ears, uh, and like my son has twists, the long locks, and all that.
00:50:56.719 --> 00:51:02.800
So they're not gonna look how we look because the old school traditional, we had to have a certain look in order for us to be saved.
00:51:03.039 --> 00:51:06.880
But how we respond to their heart posture is what's gonna make a difference.
00:51:07.039 --> 00:51:22.000
Um, and I think also, too, we're in a season of where in the church there's a lot of us older millennials who are raised in it, are circling back, separating that man-made tradition from what actually is, who we actually want to worship.
00:51:22.159 --> 00:51:24.239
Like, I don't want to just be in church.
00:51:24.320 --> 00:51:26.159
I actually want to experience God for myself.
00:51:26.400 --> 00:51:30.400
And so now it's not uncommon to see a pastor with a sleeve tap, right?
00:51:31.039 --> 00:51:34.400
But his heart is pure, and people, young men are connecting with that.
00:51:34.559 --> 00:51:39.280
Because now you see me uh, because I'm not in a three-piece suit, but you see me for who I am.
00:51:39.519 --> 00:51:42.400
And they're showing that God can change people.
00:51:42.559 --> 00:51:44.480
And we're transparent with our sin.
00:51:44.639 --> 00:51:47.119
Like we went out and we did things that we shouldn't have done.
00:51:47.199 --> 00:51:50.000
And we're saying, don't do as I say, not as I do.
00:51:50.159 --> 00:51:53.039
But if you do, here's what the outcome is, and here's why.
00:51:53.199 --> 00:51:56.800
A lot of us were told, just don't do this, don't do this, you're going to hell, like I said earlier.
00:51:56.960 --> 00:51:59.519
But now we're able to say, hey, here's why you shouldn't do this.
00:51:59.760 --> 00:52:06.320
Here's why you should do that, according to scripture, and here's how I walked it out, and here's how my faith was strengthened in that regard.
00:52:06.480 --> 00:52:10.000
So, and that's and it's a beautiful thing because we need more men in our churches.
00:52:10.400 --> 00:52:16.880
So, what I think I hear you saying is that the clarity has given even more way for conviction, particularly of young men.
00:52:17.119 --> 00:52:17.760
I love that.
00:52:17.920 --> 00:52:18.639
I love that.
00:52:18.800 --> 00:52:23.599
I I I love the your theological perspective, and so I want to ask you this question as well.
00:52:24.400 --> 00:52:33.840
You know, because you shared your beginning and have seen from a historical standpoint that bivocational pastoring is not anything new that's been around.
00:52:34.000 --> 00:52:46.320
But I want to ask you now, what do you think that the church has gotten wrong for years related to the idea of the bivocational pastor, and what can we do modern day to correct that so?
00:52:47.039 --> 00:52:47.519
Yeah.
00:52:47.679 --> 00:52:49.440
Um, that that's a good question.
00:52:49.599 --> 00:52:50.719
So it's biblical.
00:52:50.880 --> 00:52:52.400
Paul was a tent maker.
00:52:52.559 --> 00:53:00.480
Um, and the Bible says, give honor to those who preach and teach to you, right?
00:53:00.719 --> 00:53:04.159
Um, that a pastor, preacher, teacher is worthy of the reward.
00:53:04.320 --> 00:53:09.119
So it's biblical to honor those who preach and teach to us.
00:53:09.280 --> 00:53:23.119
Um, I think modern church, um, we've gotten so advanced that when we have a bivocational pastor, we just assume that the other side will take care of what is needed.
00:53:24.639 --> 00:53:26.480
Churches have to start somewhere.
00:53:26.559 --> 00:53:31.280
Uh again, I'm a business professor, uh, so there's a business of ministry as well, too.
00:53:31.440 --> 00:53:41.280
Um I tell my church all the time, like, uh the the going market rate for an executive pastor, you can't afford me if we actually put it on paper.
00:53:41.519 --> 00:53:52.079
But because I'm called to this, I'm not looking for a salary, and I also got to be sensitive to what church size we are and our church budget and all those things above.
00:53:52.320 --> 00:54:03.920
But I think the modern church, the business side of ministry has to take into account where we're at, what does it look like biblically to honor the man or woman of God within reason, right?
00:54:04.400 --> 00:54:10.079
In addition to, I think there needs to be a conversation of expectation as we're in by vocational.
00:54:10.159 --> 00:54:14.320
Like, so uh I interviewed for a senior pastor job uh years ago.
00:54:14.400 --> 00:54:18.480
It was a 500-member church, uh, went through the process, which was very healthy.
00:54:18.559 --> 00:54:21.280
Um, and God revealed that it wasn't time, that was not it.
00:54:21.440 --> 00:54:26.400
Um, and my thing was I wasn't gonna stop my profess my teaching.
00:54:26.559 --> 00:54:28.400
I needed to continue to do that.
00:54:28.559 --> 00:54:33.280
Uh, it was a full-time salary, but I need to continue to do that, particularly because my kids go to TCU for free.
00:54:33.360 --> 00:54:34.719
So I can't give that benefit up.
00:54:35.039 --> 00:54:36.559
That's a blessing, that's a blessing, it is.
00:54:36.960 --> 00:54:38.159
It's a blessing, right?
00:54:38.639 --> 00:54:50.960
And so there was kind of contractual talk on what amount of time I would give based on that full-time salary and if my attention would be elsewhere, which I think was a legitimate conversation.
00:54:51.039 --> 00:54:53.199
So I think churches have to have a conversation.
00:54:53.519 --> 00:54:56.719
What is the bivocational role on the worldly side, right?
00:54:56.800 --> 00:54:58.000
What is that profession?
00:54:58.159 --> 00:54:59.360
You know, is it flexible?
00:54:59.519 --> 00:55:02.480
What is the attention to give, or vacation dates?
00:55:02.559 --> 00:55:14.239
Um, and um, what is the actual number that the church is comfortable doing, which won't break the church, but also says, hey, we honor you, the pay frequency, is there a vacation stipend?
00:55:14.480 --> 00:55:15.519
Is there a technology stipend?
00:55:15.840 --> 00:55:16.800
Like all those things.
00:55:16.960 --> 00:55:21.199
And I think the answer to your question, the short way is let's talk about it.
00:55:21.360 --> 00:55:22.159
Here's where we're at.
00:55:23.440 --> 00:55:24.639
Here's our budget.
00:55:24.880 --> 00:55:26.079
We need to do something.
00:55:26.239 --> 00:55:28.880
What can we do on both ends and meet in the middle?
00:55:28.960 --> 00:55:31.840
Because it is biblical, but how can we meet in the middle?
00:55:32.000 --> 00:55:37.840
Now, obviously, if I'm running 10 people a Sunday, I don't need to be full time because we can't even make the light bill.
00:55:38.000 --> 00:55:39.119
That's irresponsible.
00:55:39.199 --> 00:55:41.440
And I don't think a true man of God would want to do that.
00:55:41.599 --> 00:55:45.360
But how can we have conversations to where we we stair-step it, right?
00:55:45.440 --> 00:55:47.519
We start here and we grow from there.
00:55:47.760 --> 00:55:51.519
Or I know some churches who connect back to some metrics.
00:55:51.760 --> 00:55:54.880
You get 10% of the giving uh each Sunday.
00:55:54.960 --> 00:55:59.280
So that way, if we run 500 and uh we we make a million dollars, you get 10% of that.
00:55:59.360 --> 00:56:00.559
But if we don't do well, you don't do.
00:56:00.719 --> 00:56:02.239
So it's connected there as well.
00:56:02.400 --> 00:56:03.760
But also some goals as well.
00:56:03.840 --> 00:56:11.519
We want to see some growth, we want to see some new ministries established, we want to see some leadership development, but all of those different ways of going about it, but we got to conversate about it.
00:56:11.760 --> 00:56:19.280
So I think for too long, historically, we started out, we had a pastor parsonage, we had full-time pastors, 60s, 70s, and 80s.
00:56:19.360 --> 00:56:24.159
It was actual full-time role, and then that shifted to where we did more by vocational.
00:56:24.480 --> 00:56:33.119
Um, and now I think we got to swing back to find a healthy balance and conversate what does it look like based on the budget?
00:56:33.199 --> 00:56:35.039
Because if the money is not there, the money's not there.
00:56:35.199 --> 00:56:37.920
And so I think that the conversation piece, let's talk about it.
00:56:38.000 --> 00:56:40.960
And I think oftentimes in church we don't because, oh, it's about money.
00:56:41.119 --> 00:56:46.079
And as a pastor, I'm gonna be perceived as, you know, as a prosperity gospel preacher, so I don't want to talk about money.
00:56:46.239 --> 00:56:50.159
But then as a church, you know, I don't want to talk about it because we can't really afford to pay him.
00:56:50.239 --> 00:56:54.320
He preaches well, he leads well, he teaches well, he's always here, he's faithful, but we can't meet him.
00:56:54.639 --> 00:56:55.599
All we can do is$50.
00:56:55.920 --> 00:57:00.719
And so we turn around and go away versus come together to talk about where it can meet in the middle.
00:57:01.119 --> 00:57:13.519
Yeah, in 2026, there are definitely various options that are out there from housing allowances if you can't do a full salary to travel, uh, conferences, anything that you can do to show that there's honor and appreciation.
00:57:13.599 --> 00:57:22.559
I appreciate you sharing that because uh our our listeners shouldn't know if they don't know that there is a business aspect to ministry, and that definitely uh comes into play.
00:57:22.800 --> 00:57:27.360
I want to ask you now, as we get ready to go to our lightning round in our time together.
00:57:27.519 --> 00:57:28.159
This has been so rich.
00:57:28.239 --> 00:57:30.000
I can, you know, I could talk to you on and on.
00:57:30.159 --> 00:57:49.920
But I want to ask you as it relates to, again, that perhaps that young pastor, church leader that's watching, what's the one I hate to just say one, but what would you say is the one, the most important one or two lessons or truth that you need to take with you as it relates to understanding the bivocational ministry.
00:57:51.199 --> 00:57:52.960
Yeah, that's that's good.
00:57:53.119 --> 00:57:58.000
Um I'd say two things.
00:57:58.159 --> 00:58:03.440
One is if you're called to preach, preach.
00:58:04.559 --> 00:58:07.599
Um there's a difference between pastoring and preaching.
00:58:08.320 --> 00:58:13.760
Um not all preachers are pastors, and not all pastors are preachers.
00:58:14.000 --> 00:58:15.280
There's a difference.
00:58:15.599 --> 00:58:22.639
Some of us are gifted with both, uh, because there's the shepherding and the pastor's heart, but then there's the preaching exegesis, the teaching.
00:58:23.039 --> 00:58:26.239
Um, and so what you're called to do, do that.
00:58:26.480 --> 00:58:31.679
That's why we got turns around like associate pastor or teaching pastor or executive pastor.
00:58:31.760 --> 00:58:40.559
Uh traditionally, executive pastors are just really good in business and organization, and they run the business side of the ministry, don't necessarily do the shepherding, so to speak.
00:58:40.719 --> 00:58:46.559
Um, teaching pastors, like they just do the Bible studies or some sermons, but they don't do the actual pastoring.
00:58:46.719 --> 00:59:00.239
But those of us who have both hats, teaching, preaching, and pastoring, so we shepherd and pastor, but also preach and teach, um know what you're called to do specifically and do that.
00:59:00.639 --> 00:59:02.320
That's that's the first thing.
00:59:02.559 --> 00:59:06.320
Um I have no business trying to run the choir.
00:59:06.559 --> 00:59:09.199
That's not my calling, that's not my gifting.
00:59:09.599 --> 00:59:16.159
As one of as the executive pastor, um, the second in command, so to speak, I have vision.
00:59:16.320 --> 00:59:21.840
Um, I can provide context around the budget for the choir and the business and the ministry operation of the choir.
00:59:22.000 --> 00:59:25.920
I have some thoughts around kind of what we're singing and how this should go.
00:59:26.079 --> 00:59:27.360
And I share that.
00:59:27.599 --> 00:59:34.079
But the music minister who's called to that and who we've empowered as a leader, they're to take all that and make it happen in ministry.
00:59:34.159 --> 00:59:42.239
But I shouldn't be have my hands involved in it because I'm called at the high level to shepherd pastor and to preach and teach the gospel.
00:59:42.480 --> 00:59:44.000
Um, so that's the first thing.
00:59:44.239 --> 00:59:50.800
Second thing is I think, and it's gonna sound kind of tongue-in-cheek, but enjoy the journey.
00:59:50.960 --> 00:59:59.840
Um, like times when I'm I'm tired, I'm frustrated, I'm lost, I'm scratching my head.
01:00:00.159 --> 01:00:06.079
It's something about preaching on a Sunday morning that invigorates me, even if nobody's there.
01:00:06.320 --> 01:00:12.320
I've got a text that I've really connected with, and I've got three points and great illustrations.
01:00:12.639 --> 01:00:14.719
And I just I love that.
01:00:14.880 --> 01:00:16.719
Um that's the preaching part.
01:00:16.960 --> 01:00:28.559
But even the pastoring part, I'll go and I'll have an interaction with a sister or brother and pray with them, or they'll come to me and say, Hey, you said something in this sermon I took notes and it changed my life.
01:00:28.719 --> 01:00:30.239
And I'm like, thank you, Lord.
01:00:30.320 --> 01:00:37.519
That that that enjoy it and have fun from God has given you a gift that He don't give to everybody.
01:00:37.599 --> 01:00:46.480
And so, Lord, I thank you for this gift and I enjoy it, and I have fun, and you know, I'm having conversations with uh some older pastors now who talk about, you know, I'm gonna retire and all that.
01:00:46.639 --> 01:00:49.679
We don't actually retire from calling.
01:00:49.920 --> 01:00:52.159
We just do it differently in different seasons.
01:00:52.480 --> 01:01:00.639
So I may shift out of being a professor and full-time senior pastor, and then at some point shift towards, you know, a seminary professor or something like that.
01:01:00.719 --> 01:01:02.719
But I don't retire, you don't retire from calling.
01:01:02.880 --> 01:01:05.760
We don't get done with this until we see him face to face.
01:01:05.920 --> 01:01:07.679
And so those are the two things that I would share.
01:01:07.920 --> 01:01:14.960
Definitely no, do what you're called to do specifically, and then enjoy the journey and have fun doing it because it's it's nothing like it.
01:01:15.119 --> 01:01:22.159
The best thing about ministry is the preaching, the people, and the worst thing about ministry is the preaching and the people.
01:01:23.599 --> 01:01:25.199
I would just say amen.
01:01:26.320 --> 01:01:29.119
So I thank you for your your wisdom in that.
01:01:29.360 --> 01:01:36.639
I want to ask you what I would call our hump day help because we we launched this episode on the second Wednesdays of each month.
01:01:37.039 --> 01:01:49.519
So, based on advice that you've been given throughout the years, what's the greatest piece of advice you receive as a bivocational pastor in being a bi vocational pastor?
01:01:51.440 --> 01:01:55.039
If you don't know Jesus for yourself, how can you tell others about Jesus?
01:01:55.199 --> 01:01:57.119
At your job or at your church?
01:01:59.199 --> 01:02:07.199
And and and then and then he walked off and got in his Cadillac and left as my childhood pastor.
01:02:07.679 --> 01:02:12.480
And so if I don't know him for myself, how can I tell people on my job?
01:02:12.719 --> 01:02:14.639
How can I tell people in my church about him?
01:02:14.960 --> 01:02:19.280
So that means I need to know him for myself before I try to tell somebody else.
01:02:19.519 --> 01:02:26.320
So that's one of those old nuggets that the old three-piece black suit uh Pastor Eddie O'Dell told me.
01:02:26.400 --> 01:02:29.119
Yes, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, House of Prayer Baptist Church.
01:02:29.199 --> 01:02:29.920
I'll never forget it.
01:02:30.000 --> 01:02:33.840
If you don't know Jesus for yourself, how can you tell him on your job and how you can tell him in the church?
01:02:33.920 --> 01:02:36.960
So I just have a few quick lightning round questions for you.
01:02:37.039 --> 01:02:39.519
So, what's what's a book other than the Bible?
01:02:39.679 --> 01:02:46.000
We know the Bible, we get in the word, word gets into you, that you would recommend for any bivocational pastor, church leader.
01:02:46.320 --> 01:02:52.320
Uh, what I'm reading right now is The Autopsy of a Dead Church, which is a good one.
01:02:52.400 --> 01:02:55.280
Um, just to kind of stay at the forefront and recognize trends.
01:02:55.440 --> 01:03:01.519
Church is still an organization, so we'll see ebbs and flows and how culture kind of impacts our people.
01:03:01.599 --> 01:03:03.519
Um, but just different things to be mindful of.
01:03:03.679 --> 01:03:04.880
What does marketing look like?
01:03:05.039 --> 01:03:12.400
What is, you know, uh traditional preaching versus uh exegetical preaching, different types of just different things.
01:03:12.480 --> 01:03:19.920
So the autopsy of deceased church is what I I lean towards where because I'm I'm an org culture person, and that's what I teach.
01:03:20.079 --> 01:03:24.159
So I also look for the culture of the church and how the organization flourishes uh from that.
01:03:24.239 --> 01:03:26.000
So any kind of stuff.
01:03:26.079 --> 01:03:32.000
Yeah, any kind of culture or business of the church, I'm always reading to understand better how the organization flows.
01:03:32.400 --> 01:03:32.719
Okay.
01:03:33.119 --> 01:03:34.880
And finish this sentence for me.
01:03:35.119 --> 01:03:40.639
The 40-40 life is not for everyone, but it's for fill in the blank.
01:03:41.199 --> 01:03:51.920
The 40-40 life is not for everyone, but it's for the one who God has truly called to pastor his people, both in the church and in their profession.
01:03:52.559 --> 01:03:52.800
Okay.
01:03:53.039 --> 01:03:53.360
Okay.
01:03:54.719 --> 01:04:09.840
And finally, if someone were listening to this now and they're holding on to uh both worlds and having attention about uh possibly should I let one go, what would you say to them at this point in time, Todd?
01:04:10.480 --> 01:04:17.039
Definitely seek the Lord, pray, fast, seek the Lord, um, and see what season you're in to do that.
01:04:17.119 --> 01:04:21.920
Um, because sometimes the season is now uh because the church is pulling you more.
01:04:22.079 --> 01:04:27.920
Um and I want to be clear to those listening and following along is that God always provides.
01:04:28.159 --> 01:04:30.880
Sometimes we stay longer than we were supposed to.
01:04:31.119 --> 01:04:37.199
Um God always provides, he set a provision, but we can't access the provision until we let what he needs us to let go of.
01:04:37.360 --> 01:04:39.599
So be spiritually in tune to that.
01:04:39.840 --> 01:04:43.280
Is this season now for me to let one go and fully commit?
01:04:43.519 --> 01:04:48.159
And if not, stay put, but don't move until God tells you to move because he has provision.
01:04:48.320 --> 01:04:50.960
He has promised in his word that he will take care of his people.
01:04:51.039 --> 01:04:54.960
And biblically, we sing first fruits were given to Levitical priests, right?
01:04:55.119 --> 01:04:56.639
Bring your tithe to the storehouse.
01:04:56.960 --> 01:04:58.559
God's going to take care of his people.
01:04:58.800 --> 01:04:59.760
Make no mistake.
01:05:00.000 --> 01:05:03.840
But in the season, is it time to give one up or is it time to stay put?
01:05:04.000 --> 01:05:08.400
Um, and that's something that you gotta evaluate and pray to God and be led by the Spirit of.
01:05:08.480 --> 01:05:12.880
Don't get out here and put yourself in a situation and challenge God now, Lord, you said you provide.
01:05:12.960 --> 01:05:14.480
Because the Lord said don't move yet.
01:05:14.639 --> 01:05:21.679
But if he says move, move, but if he says stay put, do it with grace and be sensitive to the Spirit when He gives you instruction to move.
01:05:22.079 --> 01:05:23.360
I love it as well.
01:05:23.599 --> 01:05:25.519
Well, it's been great having you on, Dr.
01:05:25.599 --> 01:05:26.079
Chapman.
01:05:26.159 --> 01:05:30.719
I appreciate you being generous with your time, with your wisdom, and we it with your insight.
01:05:30.880 --> 01:05:35.519
I love what God is doing with you in the church and what he's doing with you in the university as well.
01:05:35.679 --> 01:05:39.599
Uh I I love your even your um, I heard about your proverbs from Dr.
01:05:39.679 --> 01:05:41.280
Chapman that you share with your class.
01:05:41.440 --> 01:05:43.920
Just another way that you can infuse.
01:05:44.400 --> 01:05:46.719
So I want to ask you this as we close.
01:05:46.960 --> 01:05:53.920
If people want to follow your work, whether from an academic perspective or on the church side, how can how can we get in touch with you?
01:05:54.320 --> 01:05:59.599
So the church I serve at is Life Changer Faith Christian Fellowship, um, lifechangerfaith.com.
01:05:59.679 --> 01:06:01.679
We're deep in the heart of Frisco, 7th of Maine.
01:06:01.760 --> 01:06:03.599
We're in the oldest building in Frisco.
01:06:03.760 --> 01:06:06.480
It was first Baptist Frisco for 75 years.
01:06:06.639 --> 01:06:10.559
We bought it, renovated it back to church, uh 110-year-old building.
01:06:10.719 --> 01:06:13.440
So deep in the heart of Frisco, Life ChangerFaith.com.
01:06:13.519 --> 01:06:14.960
That's where I'm serving currently.
01:06:15.119 --> 01:06:16.239
Um then I'm on LinkedIn.
01:06:16.400 --> 01:06:17.679
I'm not on any social media.
01:06:17.760 --> 01:06:18.960
I'm an old millennial.
01:06:19.039 --> 01:06:20.000
I don't have time for that.
01:06:20.079 --> 01:06:22.000
But LinkedIn is the best way to connect.
01:06:22.079 --> 01:06:22.800
Um just Dr.
01:06:22.880 --> 01:06:24.079
Kenneth Chapman Jr.
01:06:24.320 --> 01:06:24.880
on LinkedIn.
01:06:24.960 --> 01:06:28.480
And then again, I serve at TCU's where I teach in the Neely School of Business.
01:06:28.559 --> 01:06:29.519
So I'm fine with you.
01:06:29.599 --> 01:06:30.320
You can Google me.
01:06:30.400 --> 01:06:32.480
Uh you can definitely find me if you just Google me.
01:06:32.639 --> 01:06:33.599
And I'm an open book.
01:06:33.679 --> 01:06:39.840
And I know a lot of people say that, but I believe in connection and mentorship because freely I receive, freely I give.
01:06:39.920 --> 01:06:42.480
So if there's anybody who wants to connect, please do so.
01:06:42.559 --> 01:06:47.840
And what I've been given, I will give away uh because I'm in I'm in the business of making sure God's kingdom is advanced.
01:06:47.920 --> 01:06:54.639
And I believe He's doing it through hearts and minds of men and women who love him and are called to Him, particularly the Bivocational Pastor.
01:06:55.440 --> 01:06:56.960
Thank you so much, my brother.
01:06:57.119 --> 01:07:06.079
We'll have all If this episode landed with you the way I believe it will, then share it with the 4040 pastor right now before anything gets your attention.
01:07:06.880 --> 01:07:10.719
I want to share with you that uh today we heard from Dr.
01:07:10.800 --> 01:07:17.920
Kenneth Chapman, uh, and he shared with us that uh the 4040 life is not a compromise.
01:07:18.000 --> 01:07:18.239
Uh-huh.
01:07:18.559 --> 01:07:22.800
It is not a consolation prize for pastors who couldn't go full time.
01:07:23.519 --> 01:07:31.519
It's a calling with a shape, uh, a structure, uh, a theology and fruit that the church desperately needs.
01:07:32.800 --> 01:07:39.119
In episode three, we're going to get honest about something most 40-40 pastors avoid.
01:07:39.760 --> 01:07:43.440
What your congregation actually thinks about your business life.
01:07:44.000 --> 01:07:52.960
We're going to talk about transparency, trust, and the conversations you need to be having, but probably are.
01:07:54.320 --> 01:08:03.679
If nobody told you today that you're a 40-40 pastor and you make a difference, I want to tell you that your calling is not slit, it's whole.
01:08:03.840 --> 01:08:08.079
So subscribe today, and I'll see you in episode three.
