ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Tech Talks with Tim: Introducing Nevada’s Public Sector Tech Podcast Nevada State CIO Tim Galluzi and GTO Chief of Communication and Policy Michael Hanna launch “Tech Talks with Tim,” an unscripted, coffee-chat podcast aimed at reaching people through a new communications vehicle beyond websites, press releases, and email. They explain the show will shed light on how government technology decisions are made, how technology impacts Nevadans’ daily lives, and will highlight technologists whose work is often only noticed during crises or cyber incidents. Planned guests include GTO team members, technology leaders across Nevada’s executive branch, municipal partners, and peers from other states to discuss shared challenges such as budgets and cybersecurity and to show Nevada is not alone. Tim and Michael introduce their backgrounds in public service and tech, invite listener feedback to drive iterative improvement, and aim to release at least a couple episodes per month.

TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:01.840 --> 00:00:08.140
Grab a mug, settle in Let the conversation begin
00:00:08.140 --> 00:00:15.140
Talking public sector tech Keeping all the systems
00:00:15.140 --> 00:00:30.870
checked Tech Talk with Tim Hello My name is Tim
00:00:30.870 --> 00:00:33.969
Galluzi. I have the honor of serving as the State
00:00:33.969 --> 00:00:36.649
of Nevada's Chief Information Officer. Welcome
00:00:36.649 --> 00:00:40.710
to Tech Talks with Tim. Michael, what are we
00:00:40.710 --> 00:00:47.030
doing here? So, this is the greatest part of
00:00:47.030 --> 00:00:50.229
working in a public service office is meeting
00:00:50.229 --> 00:00:54.189
where people are at. And we've just figured that
00:00:54.189 --> 00:00:58.380
we add one more resource for... people to get
00:00:58.380 --> 00:01:02.299
the information that they want or need. So Tim,
00:01:02.460 --> 00:01:06.299
what should we start off with? Right. So yeah,
00:01:06.400 --> 00:01:10.379
you're absolutely right. There's a lot of different
00:01:10.379 --> 00:01:13.659
types of communications vehicles out there. Not
00:01:13.659 --> 00:01:16.400
everybody receives communications the same way.
00:01:16.640 --> 00:01:20.079
Not everybody's going to go to a website to read
00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:24.109
the latest press release or... Heck, they're
00:01:24.109 --> 00:01:25.750
not even going to check their email half the
00:01:25.750 --> 00:01:28.469
time. So we need to find people where they are
00:01:28.469 --> 00:01:31.890
and find a communications vehicle that really
00:01:31.890 --> 00:01:36.209
works for everybody. Hopefully people find this
00:01:36.209 --> 00:01:38.670
entertaining. Hopefully we're able to get out
00:01:38.670 --> 00:01:41.250
the information that people really want to know.
00:01:41.870 --> 00:01:45.450
There's a lot of... interesting interworkings
00:01:45.450 --> 00:01:47.549
when it comes to technology and government. And
00:01:47.549 --> 00:01:50.510
hopefully this is an opportunity where we can
00:01:50.510 --> 00:01:54.989
shed some light on how we make decisions in government
00:01:54.989 --> 00:01:59.090
technology, how technology in government can
00:01:59.090 --> 00:02:03.329
impact the daily lives of Nevadans. Maybe have
00:02:03.329 --> 00:02:05.709
an opportunity to tell a story about the amazing
00:02:05.709 --> 00:02:08.750
technologists that we have here at the GTO and
00:02:08.750 --> 00:02:13.120
across the state of Nevada. We didn't necessarily
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:17.340
have all the vehicles in place or the right vehicles
00:02:17.340 --> 00:02:20.400
in place to really have a long -form opportunity
00:02:20.400 --> 00:02:24.639
to do that. So our hope is that a podcast -type
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:27.300
format can really do that for us. Yeah, and also,
00:02:27.340 --> 00:02:31.080
full disclosure, this is not AI -generated. This
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:34.639
is your actual chief of comms from the GTO and
00:02:34.639 --> 00:02:38.020
your state CIO. I'm just very clear here. And
00:02:38.020 --> 00:02:40.639
also, none of this is scripted. So it's very...
00:02:41.500 --> 00:02:43.740
Literally, we're drinking coffee on a Friday
00:02:43.740 --> 00:02:47.300
and we are just going to talk about, you know,
00:02:47.300 --> 00:02:50.439
what our goals are for this podcast, how this
00:02:50.439 --> 00:02:54.379
could be a tool for people to get more information
00:02:54.379 --> 00:02:58.139
that they're really hungry for. And also one
00:02:58.139 --> 00:03:01.740
huge thing is shouting out all the IT folks throughout
00:03:01.740 --> 00:03:05.280
the state that do a lot of the work in the shadows
00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:07.780
that, you know, you don't really hear about IT
00:03:07.780 --> 00:03:11.939
unless there's a big. big crisis or something
00:03:11.939 --> 00:03:17.799
is not working. Yeah, absolutely. Unfortunately,
00:03:17.799 --> 00:03:20.919
in the states and elsewhere, that's when you
00:03:20.919 --> 00:03:22.860
hear about technology, when a project doesn't
00:03:22.860 --> 00:03:28.180
go well or when you have a cyber incident. Too
00:03:28.180 --> 00:03:31.180
soon? Maybe. But that's when you hear about it,
00:03:31.219 --> 00:03:34.099
is when things aren't going well. And this could
00:03:34.099 --> 00:03:36.580
be a vehicle where we celebrate some of the great
00:03:36.580 --> 00:03:38.919
work that some of our brilliant technologists
00:03:38.919 --> 00:03:42.240
are doing across the state. So some of the guests
00:03:42.240 --> 00:03:45.879
that we might have are some of our technologists.
00:03:46.219 --> 00:03:49.780
we have in -house here at the GTO, but also some
00:03:49.780 --> 00:03:53.039
of the technology leaders from across the executive
00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:55.939
branch here in the state of Nevada, but also
00:03:55.939 --> 00:03:58.819
we could be bringing in some municipal partners
00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:02.939
as they're doing their work to help serve Nevadans
00:04:02.939 --> 00:04:08.020
in their municipalities. There's a huge network
00:04:08.020 --> 00:04:10.939
of technology professionals across the entire
00:04:10.939 --> 00:04:14.879
nation. that are also facing similar challenges.
00:04:15.219 --> 00:04:17.379
And one of the things that we could use this
00:04:17.379 --> 00:04:21.980
format for is to bring them in so folks have
00:04:21.980 --> 00:04:26.420
an understanding that we aren't alone. Our challenges
00:04:26.420 --> 00:04:30.319
aren't uniquely Nevada challenges. These are
00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:34.339
things that other states, other municipalities,
00:04:34.860 --> 00:04:39.660
they're also facing. Everybody faces budgetary
00:04:39.660 --> 00:04:43.120
challenges. Everybody faces the threat of cybersecurity
00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:46.879
challenges. So to kind of hear that from other
00:04:46.879 --> 00:04:51.199
folks is also kind of empowering. So folks understand
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:54.579
that they're not alone. Yeah. Well, this might
00:04:54.579 --> 00:04:58.379
be the first time people are hopefully get to
00:04:58.379 --> 00:05:01.920
interact with us. I do want to introduce you.
00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:05.170
What can you tell us about yourself? Okay, so
00:05:05.170 --> 00:05:10.490
I didn't know that was coming. So to introduce
00:05:10.490 --> 00:05:17.629
myself, I've been here at the GTO now since it
00:05:17.629 --> 00:05:21.889
was Enterprise IT Services Division. And with
00:05:21.889 --> 00:05:27.470
the state now for about 12, 13 years. Thanks.
00:05:28.589 --> 00:05:33.279
I've been the agency head. at GTO now for about
00:05:33.279 --> 00:05:36.019
five years, serving as the state CIO for about
00:05:36.019 --> 00:05:40.819
four and a half of it. I've been in the technology
00:05:40.819 --> 00:05:45.019
space for over 20 years. I got my start in technology
00:05:45.019 --> 00:05:47.439
while serving in the United States Marine Corps
00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:49.819
as a telecommunications marine. Thank you for
00:05:49.819 --> 00:05:53.500
your service. I appreciate it. And really, I've
00:05:53.500 --> 00:05:57.120
done a little bit of everything in my journey
00:05:57.120 --> 00:06:01.379
in technology, but really... where I have found
00:06:01.379 --> 00:06:06.500
my passion is by finding the point of friction
00:06:06.500 --> 00:06:10.959
and solving it, right? And really that's been
00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:16.439
in leading people and helping them find their
00:06:16.439 --> 00:06:19.199
way, whether that be in project management or
00:06:19.199 --> 00:06:23.449
team leadership or... Getting my hands on keyboards
00:06:23.449 --> 00:06:27.970
and being a technical SME. So it's been an incredible
00:06:27.970 --> 00:06:32.050
journey. Public service has been really the thread
00:06:32.050 --> 00:06:36.610
the entire time of my career. I think every step
00:06:36.610 --> 00:06:38.410
of the way has been through public service. So
00:06:38.410 --> 00:06:43.209
I've really enjoyed it. I've been in Nevada now
00:06:43.209 --> 00:06:49.069
for about 14, 15 years. So it's been an incredible
00:06:49.069 --> 00:06:54.009
journey. Nevada's lucky to have you. Tim, I mean,
00:06:54.029 --> 00:06:57.149
it's just working with you, working for you.
00:06:57.689 --> 00:07:01.709
I mean, just speaking from my experience and
00:07:01.709 --> 00:07:05.949
selfishly saying, wow, I have the coolest boss,
00:07:06.189 --> 00:07:11.410
just FYI. We get to really experiment and really
00:07:11.410 --> 00:07:15.589
dive into figuring out what problems to solve,
00:07:15.649 --> 00:07:20.240
leaving enough room for this creative. endeavor
00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:23.220
of being in IT which is not really talked about
00:07:23.220 --> 00:07:26.939
a lot we're kind of like artists and like kind
00:07:26.939 --> 00:07:29.379
of nerds that want to figure out problems but
00:07:29.379 --> 00:07:33.360
in very unique efficient ways and we get to do
00:07:33.360 --> 00:07:37.339
that in this cool environment that we that you
00:07:37.339 --> 00:07:40.120
facilitated and you kind of help foster a lot
00:07:40.120 --> 00:07:43.379
of technologists for GTO and they continue to
00:07:43.379 --> 00:07:47.300
develop and you know, other agencies and their
00:07:47.300 --> 00:07:49.379
offices and how you support them and how you
00:07:49.379 --> 00:07:53.420
push forward technology as a tool that enables
00:07:53.420 --> 00:07:58.439
people to do great work. So that's, I get the
00:07:58.439 --> 00:08:01.620
easy job. A little bit about me, that way people
00:08:01.620 --> 00:08:05.259
are like, who is this guy? So I'm Michael Hanna
00:08:05.259 --> 00:08:08.899
Butros -Meyering, was an equally long title.
00:08:09.079 --> 00:08:12.689
I'm the chief of communication and policy. which
00:08:12.689 --> 00:08:16.430
is a fun title and long last name to stay on
00:08:16.430 --> 00:08:20.470
the record. So I don't envy anyone else for that.
00:08:21.009 --> 00:08:25.329
I come from a technology background turned into
00:08:25.329 --> 00:08:29.129
comms. And I was actually, funny enough, I was
00:08:29.129 --> 00:08:32.549
following Mr. Galuzzi here for quite a bit of
00:08:32.549 --> 00:08:36.129
time before I'm like, huh, public service, never
00:08:36.129 --> 00:08:39.809
really considered it. But then he said, hey,
00:08:39.870 --> 00:08:43.129
I need a comms guy. And I'm like, man, I'm not.
00:08:44.250 --> 00:08:47.830
Behind the schooling and all my experience, I'm
00:08:47.830 --> 00:08:50.049
like, I'm not a comms guy. But I am an IT guy
00:08:50.049 --> 00:08:52.850
that knows how to talk about technology. Maybe
00:08:52.850 --> 00:08:56.269
I could fit the bill. Well, two years later,
00:08:56.370 --> 00:08:59.250
I'm here. So I'm glad. So thank you. Thank you
00:08:59.250 --> 00:09:02.570
for that. But yeah, this is going to be really
00:09:02.570 --> 00:09:06.139
a nice little format for us. We're still trying
00:09:06.139 --> 00:09:09.159
to gather what we are going to be talking about.
00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:11.279
Do you have any ideas of what format we're going
00:09:11.279 --> 00:09:13.940
to be looking for at Tech Talks with Tim? Yeah,
00:09:13.980 --> 00:09:16.220
I think that there's going to be a couple different
00:09:16.220 --> 00:09:20.769
show types, right? I think that... Like I mentioned,
00:09:20.889 --> 00:09:24.809
I definitely want to do highlights of some of
00:09:24.809 --> 00:09:26.929
our team members so they can really talk about
00:09:26.929 --> 00:09:31.649
their experience here in GTO and how they provide
00:09:31.649 --> 00:09:35.669
their service to the state and the technology
00:09:35.669 --> 00:09:38.129
that they work on that impacts the daily lives
00:09:38.129 --> 00:09:42.070
of Nevadans. You know, that'll be one type of
00:09:42.070 --> 00:09:45.269
show. I also want to be able to bring on other
00:09:45.269 --> 00:09:47.470
state leaders, whether they're in technology
00:09:47.470 --> 00:09:51.470
or not, to have a conversation about the technology
00:09:51.470 --> 00:09:53.850
that we deploy across the state and maybe some
00:09:53.850 --> 00:09:58.090
of the policy impacts of what we do. You know,
00:09:58.110 --> 00:10:01.389
I think that would be a incredibly powerful type
00:10:01.389 --> 00:10:03.990
of conversation, not only for our team members
00:10:03.990 --> 00:10:07.570
here, but for all folks that are listening to
00:10:07.570 --> 00:10:11.039
this. So they really. understand how technology
00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:14.840
plays a role, not just in service delivery, but
00:10:14.840 --> 00:10:18.259
in policy making decisions. So I think that there's
00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:21.720
a few different ways that we can deliver this
00:10:21.720 --> 00:10:24.299
message, a few different show formats that we're
00:10:24.299 --> 00:10:26.360
kind of trying to play around with just to find
00:10:26.360 --> 00:10:30.559
out what is the best way to tell our story about
00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:33.139
how we deliver technology here in Nevada. Cool.
00:10:34.480 --> 00:10:38.399
I'm really excited that we get to Not investigate,
00:10:38.580 --> 00:10:42.820
but get a query of our listeners here. If you
00:10:42.820 --> 00:10:45.340
have ideas of what we should be talking about
00:10:45.340 --> 00:10:48.279
or formats, this is a two -way relationship.
00:10:48.820 --> 00:10:51.340
You tell us, and we will review it and figure
00:10:51.340 --> 00:10:55.059
out how do we achieve that. So thank you for
00:10:55.059 --> 00:10:58.600
finding a time to facilitate something like this.
00:10:58.679 --> 00:11:02.070
So I'm, again, very excited. And as you were
00:11:02.070 --> 00:11:04.330
mentioning, with your background coming up as
00:11:04.330 --> 00:11:06.350
a technologist, I also came up as a technologist.
00:11:06.409 --> 00:11:08.309
And as technologists, we believe in iterative
00:11:08.309 --> 00:11:11.269
process improvement, right? So the only way that
00:11:11.269 --> 00:11:13.250
you really practice iterative process improvement
00:11:13.250 --> 00:11:17.549
is with feedback, right? So as we kind of roll
00:11:17.549 --> 00:11:20.309
through this process, as each episode comes out,
00:11:20.350 --> 00:11:22.669
we want to hear from everybody. We want to know
00:11:22.669 --> 00:11:25.429
what's working, what's not working, because we
00:11:25.429 --> 00:11:29.120
want to make sure that whatever we put out there
00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:32.200
really works. And it is the message that people
00:11:32.200 --> 00:11:34.919
want to hear about. So if anybody has any show
00:11:34.919 --> 00:11:37.799
ideas or format ideas that they'd like to send
