00:00:08.320 --> 00:00:14.320
Welcome to the Talking with the School of Transportation podcast, presented by Centennial College.
00:00:14.480 --> 00:00:17.679
With your hosts, Ian Campbell and Harna Gill.
00:00:17.839 --> 00:00:19.359
Let's get into it now.
00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:22.480
Welcome back to the Talking with the SOT podcast.
00:00:22.640 --> 00:00:27.359
We have a special episode based on something we're working with with Centennial College.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:31.120
That's our OERs, Open Educational Resources.
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:36.399
So these are resources that are available to anyone, uh free of charge.
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:45.920
And the idea is that we want to promote learning and reduce barriers for those who aren't traditionally able to access uh some of the information.
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:54.000
So this OER will be available uh for anyone who's interested in learning about uh what are we covering today, you know?
00:00:54.240 --> 00:00:57.039
Planetary gears, one of my favorite subjects.
00:00:57.359 --> 00:01:02.079
So a planetary gear is something that's utilized in an automatic transmission.
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:05.439
Yeah, a bunch of different uh applications.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:11.120
We can see them in starter motors and in the car where we can want to change the gear ratio for maybe more torque.
00:01:11.280 --> 00:01:13.840
We can see them in uh electric power steering sometimes.
00:01:13.920 --> 00:01:14.879
You see them in there.
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:21.760
And uh mainly, I guess one of the most predominant places would be the transmission, specifically an automatic transmission.
00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:26.799
Uh because we can create a whole bunch of different gear ratios from three different gears.
00:01:26.959 --> 00:01:36.400
Now, in a transmission, we have to add a couple uh two of these together to make it work because of how many uh components can be grabbed or held and applied.
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:43.200
Um, but just the simple planetary gear set is uh pretty impressive overall for just having three gears.
00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:45.920
Uh and those three gears, do you know what they might be?
00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:48.159
I believe I have an idea.
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:55.120
So we have our ring gear, okay, also known as our annulus, and then we have a uh planetary gear.
00:01:55.359 --> 00:01:57.200
What's the planetary gear look like?
00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:02.079
So it's generally composed of uh multiple gears.
00:02:02.400 --> 00:02:03.120
Is that fair to say?
00:02:03.359 --> 00:02:08.240
On a housing on a housing that the housing together called the carrier, essentially.
00:02:08.639 --> 00:02:11.680
And those little gears, do you know what they might be called?
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:14.080
The planetary pinions.
00:02:14.319 --> 00:02:14.479
Okay.
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:20.080
So we have like little planet planetary pinions that kind of rotate around another gear that you haven't said yet.
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:20.879
And do you know what that is?
00:02:21.039 --> 00:02:21.599
Which is the sun.
00:02:21.919 --> 00:02:22.080
Yeah.
00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:27.439
So we have planets that rotate around the sun, and then a ring gear that kind of encapsulates encapsulates it all.
00:02:27.759 --> 00:02:28.560
Holds it all together.
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:29.120
Yeah.
00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:34.080
When we talk about planetary gears, I think we need to start with some basic gear theory.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:38.879
Before we know what the planetaries can do, we kind of have to know what gears do themselves.
00:02:39.039 --> 00:02:39.280
Sure.
00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:48.000
So gears themselves are basically like little levers pushing on another lever that's going to rotate or transmit torque or power or movement from one to the next.
00:02:48.159 --> 00:02:49.199
Does that kind of make sense?
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:49.919
Absolutely.
00:02:50.159 --> 00:02:58.800
And those levers or or gears that we are rotating now, we can change the size or the ratio of them to give us a different output.
00:02:58.960 --> 00:03:10.800
So what we could have is a either a larger gear and a smaller gear, either a large gear driving a small gear or a small gear driving a larger gear, but then I guess that how does that affect our output?
00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:12.719
Well, that's that's a huge factor.
00:03:12.879 --> 00:03:14.400
You think about a bicycle, right?
00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:22.800
And when you're riding a bicycle, you could have a small gear at the front and a big gear at the back, and that's gonna change the amount of effort needed for different applications, right?
00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:27.120
Now a bicycle has a chain on that, but that's still essentially sprockets and gears.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:31.439
Uh so if we have a real small gear, that's gonna be the input.
00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:35.199
And I like to use the words input and output instead of driving or driven.
00:03:35.360 --> 00:03:38.159
I feel it just kind of sends it home a little easier.
00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:44.639
When we say driving and driven, it can get really muddled sometimes when you're thinking about how many components are doing what.
00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:48.240
So if we have the input as a small gear, right?
00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:49.759
Let's say it has 10 teeth.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:50.159
Okay.
00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:54.240
Okay, and the output is a bigger gear, let's say it has 30 teeth.
00:03:54.479 --> 00:03:56.960
What do you think that output might be?
00:03:57.360 --> 00:03:58.319
Like a ratio?
00:03:58.479 --> 00:03:58.719
Yeah.
00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:00.319
So like a three to one ratio.
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:02.159
How'd you come up with three to one?
00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:04.319
That is a great question.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:12.319
So what I did was I took my driven or my output gear divided by my drive or input gear.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:13.039
Exactly.
00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:21.279
So, and I'm glad that you said that with the input beside drive and the output beside driven, because that can really kind of remember what it is.
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:24.720
It's kind of hard when it's like drive over driven and all this kind of stuff.
00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:26.879
So if you can remember the input, right?
00:04:26.959 --> 00:04:30.160
And we have the output over the input will give us that.
00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:39.279
So driven over drive, and if you've taken any classes with me, that's hammered home, uh, gives you that ratio of three to one.
00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:41.759
So, what does that mean, three to one, though?
00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:43.519
Okay, that's a great question.
00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:51.600
Well, uh, for me to turn that big gear at the back, how many rotations do you think I'd have to go on the on the smaller gear?
00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:56.800
So I'd have to go three rotations to get one to get one full rotation on that other one.
00:04:56.959 --> 00:05:00.639
Now that creates a ton of torque because you're moving that gear so much.
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:04.639
Uh you know, you could wheelie on the bicycle pretty easily or whatever that might be.
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:11.120
Or if we're talking about a car, which we're uh eventually going to be talking about, that can get the vehicle up to speed quick.
00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:16.160
Now, the difference between torque and speed, though, is something else we need to talk about.
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:18.800
So there's a direct uh relationship.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:19.199
Yeah.
00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:21.279
And they're like inversely proportional.
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:22.079
Is that fair to say?
00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:26.079
Yeah, the uh you can only have one without the other, essentially.
00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:37.600
You can have a balance between them at times, and that would probably be a one-to-one ratio, which would be, you know, straight through the same speed, maybe a BMX bike or something like that, depending on on who you are.
00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:46.720
Uh, or you could have a high torque, which we just talked about, that three to one or higher, depending on what the application is, or then you could have a speed.
00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:49.920
And what do you think a speed ratio might look like?
00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:54.879
So would this be a value that is maybe less less than one?
00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:55.839
Exactly.
00:05:56.079 --> 00:06:02.399
Like a 0.8 to one or uh 0.25 to 1 would be an extreme overdrive condition.
00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:05.839
So in this overdrive condition, what's changed?
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:08.079
What's how did I achieve this overdrive?
00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:16.319
Well, instead of having a small gear driving a big gear giving us that four to one or three to one ratio, we're gonna have a big gear driving a smaller gear.
00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:23.519
So if I have uh a big gear that spins once, let's let's use the same teeth tooth count, right?
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:28.319
I have a big gear that's that has 30 teeth, and I'm spinning a small gear with 10 teeth.
00:06:28.560 --> 00:06:34.879
For one rotation of that big gear, that other gear is gonna move a third three times.
00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:35.519
Three times.
00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:36.959
Yeah, three times faster.
00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:38.560
So it's moving faster with that.
00:06:38.720 --> 00:06:44.160
We have a large gear that's gonna fly that small gear around and create this overdrive condition.
00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:50.000
And in a vehicle, we want that overdrive condition for the highway speeds because we don't need torque, right?
00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:52.480
So at low speed, we need torque.
00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:54.000
We need to, especially when we're at a stop.
00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:54.480
Exactly.
00:06:54.639 --> 00:06:57.279
We need that breakaway torque to get the vehicle moving.
00:06:57.519 --> 00:07:03.040
And once we're at highway speeds and we're already moving, we don't require as much torque, but we do want more speed.
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:03.680
Exactly.
00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:10.959
So a gear ratio in the car and engineers building vehicles or transmissions will take that all into account.
00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:12.480
How heavy is the vehicle?
00:07:12.560 --> 00:07:27.120
Uh, you think of a uh 18-wheeler truck, the the ratio of those gears are going to be so high because they need to get all that weight and payload to start moving at the stoplight versus you know uh a Chevy Sprint or a Firefly back then.
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:28.959
Firefly, yeah.
00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:31.600
You know, I would have gone with Honda Civic or something.
00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:32.319
Okay, I'm old.
00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:33.839
I'm old, I understand.
00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:40.720
So now if we kind of relate that gear theory to a planetary gear set, oh, there's one thing I forgot actually.
00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:48.240
When you have an external gear rotating with an external gear, what happens to the rotation of those?
00:07:48.480 --> 00:08:02.079
So just so we can visualize that, when we say external gear, we mean that if you look at a gear almost in the traditional sense that the teeth aren't on the outside, and there's two sets of gears that have teeth on the outside, mesh external gear.
00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:03.439
Yeah, meshing to one another.
00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:08.160
So when they rotate together directly, they'll rotate in opposite directions.
00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:08.800
Exactly.
00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:11.279
So it's gonna change the direction of rotation.
00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:16.560
So if one's rotating clockwise, that other one's gonna rotate counterclockwise.
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:27.360
Now, another thing before we get into the planetaries and how they're built, is if you have an internal gear, which means the tooth, the the teeth are on the inside of the gear meshing with another one.
00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:39.279
If that's so there's a there's a gear that uh has the teeth on the inside, and then on the inside of that, there's another gear that has external and they are uh in mesh with each other.
00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:41.440
So they would move in the same direction.
00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:42.080
Exactly.
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:46.879
Instead of going opposite at this point, that internal gear is going to drive it the same direction.
00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:49.600
And we need to know that for the planetary gear set.
00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:54.480
So now moving into the planetary gear set, we have those three components we talked about.
00:08:54.639 --> 00:08:56.799
The sun would be the smallest of the gears.
00:08:57.120 --> 00:08:59.759
Okay, and the sun has uh external teeth.
00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:01.039
External teeth.
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:02.639
Then we have the ring.
00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:08.799
Now, this is kind of a tricky subject because the ring goes over top of everything, right?
00:09:08.960 --> 00:09:10.320
And has the internal teeth.
00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:12.720
So physically it's the biggest gear.
00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:27.360
Okay, but when we do the math, it can't be the biggest gear because the carrier or the planetary carrier has more has if you do the proper equation, comes out with the most tooth count based on that ring gear and the sun gear.
00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:36.000
So the ring gear would be considered the middle gear, even though it's the biggest, and that really kind of messes people up, uh, especially when you're learning in the classroom.
00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:38.720
And then the carrier we're going to consider the biggest gear.
00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:41.360
Okay, so let's let's just sum that up.
00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:43.759
That's the sun gear, which is the smallest gear.
00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:45.279
It has external teeth.
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:45.759
Yeah.
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:52.080
The um the planetary carrier um has external.
00:09:52.559 --> 00:09:53.279
External teeth.
00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:54.639
External teeth as well.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:10:01.519
And then finally we get um the the annulus or the ring gear, which has the internal teeth.
00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:02.240
Internal.
00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:06.399
Okay, so depending on the component, we have either internal or external teeth.
00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:16.960
And we said the sun is the smallest, the ring is the second largest, yeah, or middle, I guess you would say, and then the largest overall is the planetary carrier.
00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:17.440
Yes.
00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:26.720
And now that we've kind of identified what the largest gear is, we can kind of manipulate that overdrive and underdrive condition based on that.
00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:39.360
Because if the carrier or the planetary carrier is considered the largest gear, if we are then making that the input or drive gear, everything below that will be in an overdrive condition.
00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:46.879
Now, if we flip that and make that the output or the driven gear, everything's gonna be underdrive and underdrive condition.
00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:53.279
So we can manipulate what we want to do based on uh what the carrier is doing, right?
00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:58.159
So do you want to try and like find the slowest gear we could possibly make based on that?
00:10:58.399 --> 00:10:58.639
Sure.
00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:05.919
Now to get our slowest gear where we'd have the most torque, we want a small gear driving the largest possible gear.
00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:06.399
Exactly.
00:11:06.559 --> 00:11:08.399
So our smallest gear is the sun.
00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:09.039
Yeah.
00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:12.080
Okay, and our largest gear is the planetary carrier.
00:11:12.240 --> 00:11:12.559
Perfect.
00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:15.279
So we want the sun to drive the planetary carrier.
00:11:15.519 --> 00:11:17.759
Now there's one thing we haven't talked about yet.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:21.759
We can have an input and an output, but what about that last thing?
00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:23.519
We have to do something with that.
00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:26.240
We gotta hold it, we gotta hold it in place.
00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:31.360
We want it not to spin so that therefore that it can transmit the torque through that planetary set.
00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:33.200
How do we do that in a transmission?
00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:38.639
In a transmission, we use bands or clutches that can hold that gear to the case.
00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:43.440
Okay, so they apply pressure to stop it from rotating and make it a held gear.
00:11:43.679 --> 00:11:44.879
A held component, yes.
00:11:45.120 --> 00:11:45.360
Okay.
00:11:45.840 --> 00:11:46.159
Okay.
00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:58.879
So if we were to use a band or clutch to hold our uh our ring gear, yeah, okay, and we had our sun gear drive the planetary, yeah, we'd be in an underdrive.
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:00.960
The the most underdrive.
00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:01.919
The most underdrive.
00:12:02.159 --> 00:12:05.840
Yeah, the most extreme underdrive that a that that planetary can make.
00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:07.519
And I guess that's a good point, too.
00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:14.320
We'll have multiple uh potential underdrive gears, yeah, right, because we have a different combination.
00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:19.120
So when you say most underdrive, it is the the greatest ratio of underdrive.
00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:26.080
Yeah, well, and we teach this in the lab, but you can get up to eight different functions from one simple planetary gear set.
00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:29.279
From those three components, we can make up to eight.
00:12:29.360 --> 00:12:34.399
So we could get a slow underdrive, which I call super slow, which is what we just discussed.
00:12:34.559 --> 00:12:35.600
Which is what we just discussed.
00:12:35.759 --> 00:12:37.519
We can get a fast underdrive.
00:12:37.919 --> 00:12:39.440
So let's pause here for a second.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:42.080
How would I achieve a fast underdrive?
00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:47.679
Well, when we talk about fast underdrive, the carrier still needs to be the output because it's in underdrive.
00:12:47.840 --> 00:12:52.080
But then we want the medium gear, which is the ring, to be driving that carrier.
00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:58.080
So we're gonna hold the sun, the ring will drive the carrier, and we're in a higher underdrive.
00:12:58.240 --> 00:13:00.320
It's not super slow, it's just slow.
00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:02.720
Now, if we were to look at a ratio for that.
00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:03.279
Sure.
00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:07.759
And we said the three to one ratio was our super underdrive, I think you called it.
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:08.080
Yeah.
00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:11.759
What would the ratio look like for our next underdrive?
00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:14.960
Uh it could be anything, depending on how they engineer it.
00:13:15.039 --> 00:13:21.279
But probably, you know, if that first gear was three to one, maybe we're at one and a half to one or something like that, right?
00:13:21.440 --> 00:13:26.879
So that that second gear essentially, if we're thinking about a car, that's kind of that second gear stage.
00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:31.200
So we're already rolling, so we don't need as much torque, but we want to start getting some speed.
00:13:31.360 --> 00:13:32.240
Yeah, exactly that.
00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:37.679
And then you third gear in the in the grand scheme of things would be kind of like direct drive.
00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:38.799
A one to one.
00:13:38.960 --> 00:13:41.120
And direct drive would be a one-to-one ratio.
00:13:41.200 --> 00:13:43.679
Now, in order to achieve this, it's kind of simple.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:45.440
We don't need to hold anything now.
00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:48.639
We just want two inputs, any two inputs.
00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:55.039
If we have one input on the sun and one put input on the ring, that carrier is going to follow in the same speed as the other.
00:13:55.120 --> 00:13:58.399
It's going to kind of lock them all together and rotate at the same speed.
00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:01.919
We could have the carrier in the sun or the carrier in the ring as well.
00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:04.399
Just hold any two inputs.
00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:06.320
A lot of students are like, we have to hold two.
00:14:06.399 --> 00:14:09.679
And I'm like, no, you would go nowhere because it's not driving.
00:14:09.759 --> 00:14:11.919
We need to have two inputs in that direction.
00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:18.000
So direct drive, two inputs, any two inputs will create a one-to-one ratio.
00:14:18.320 --> 00:14:18.639
Okay.
00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:25.200
So far, we have our super slow underdrive, we have our next uh underdrive, and then we have our one-to-one ratio.
00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:25.679
Yeah.
00:14:25.840 --> 00:14:27.120
And then where do we go from here?
00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:28.639
Well, we need to go to overdrive.
00:14:28.799 --> 00:14:29.360
Overdrive.
00:14:29.519 --> 00:14:29.679
Yeah.
00:14:29.759 --> 00:14:37.679
So now instead of having a higher ratio, like four to one, three to one, we're gonna have a less than one ratio as we talked about earlier.
00:14:37.919 --> 00:14:44.080
So if I wanted to get an overdrive condition, I then need to drive or have an input on which gear.
00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:46.799
So we need the carrier to be driving something else.
00:14:46.879 --> 00:14:49.840
So we could have the carrier driving the ring.
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:50.320
Yep.
00:14:50.480 --> 00:14:52.320
And that would give us an overdrive.
00:14:52.559 --> 00:14:53.039
It would.
00:14:53.200 --> 00:14:56.159
Now is that fast overdrive or slow overdrive?
00:14:56.399 --> 00:14:58.000
I'm gonna call that a slow overdrive.
00:14:58.240 --> 00:14:58.799
You nailed it.
00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:02.879
That's the slow overdrive because we have the biggest gear driving the second biggest gear.
00:15:03.039 --> 00:15:10.639
So that's gonna give us an overdrive condition, which would be less than one to one, but it's not the fastest or that fastest overdrive we can make.
00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:15.120
And ratio-wise, that would probably look like something like a 0.9 or 0.8 to one.
00:15:15.440 --> 00:15:16.320
Yeah, around that.
00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:24.399
And then if we want to get our fastest overdrive, we would have our uh carrier driving the sun.
00:15:24.720 --> 00:15:29.120
We have the largest gear, which is the carrier, considered largest gear driving that sun gear.
00:15:29.279 --> 00:15:36.639
So if our carrier is 40 teeth and our sun is 10 teeth, that's that's a crazy ratio, right?
00:15:36.720 --> 00:15:37.360
What's that gonna be?
00:15:37.600 --> 00:15:38.720
0.25 to 1.
00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:40.080
0.25 to 1.
00:15:40.159 --> 00:15:41.919
So that's gonna be moving super fast.
00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:49.279
And you if you have a planetary gear set or uh, you know, if you look one up, you'll see that move really quickly based on the rotation of the carrier.
00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:53.039
Uh, and that works great in a highway application or a highway speeds.
00:15:53.679 --> 00:15:56.000
So we've done uh a few now.
00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:57.840
I think we have three spots left.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:15:58.960
Yeah, we did five.
00:15:59.200 --> 00:15:59.440
Yeah.
00:15:59.600 --> 00:16:02.799
So the next one we can talk about is neutral.
00:16:03.039 --> 00:16:03.360
Sure.
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:04.399
Pretty easy.
00:16:04.559 --> 00:16:09.840
You can have one input, and as long as you don't hold anything, it's just spinning freely.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:10.240
Okay.
00:16:10.399 --> 00:16:11.360
So it's freewheeling.
00:16:11.440 --> 00:16:17.440
So you can have one input moving, and in a transmission, we usually have that input shaft that's rotating, right?
00:16:17.519 --> 00:16:19.039
But nothing else is being held.
00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:22.799
So it's just spinning inside the transmission, doing nothing.
00:16:23.279 --> 00:16:23.600
Okay.
00:16:23.759 --> 00:16:25.600
So neutral is pretty straightforward.
00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:26.799
Very straightforward.
00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:30.080
And then lastly, we need to get it in reverse, right?
00:16:30.159 --> 00:16:31.919
We need that car to back up.
00:16:32.240 --> 00:16:46.480
So with this planetary set, we can get two reverse speeds, but in a car, we can't really do that because when we hold it in our hands or on a planetary gear trainer, you can move those things pretty freely, hold anything, move anything.
00:16:46.720 --> 00:16:49.840
In a car, we can only hold certain components.
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:56.159
And usually we have to double up this planetary gear set to have two of them to make it really work for us.
00:16:56.399 --> 00:17:01.279
So um, when we talk about reverse, is there a way to get that?
00:17:01.600 --> 00:17:04.640
So, well, we sort of talked about this with our uh gears.
00:17:04.799 --> 00:17:09.680
If we have two external gears driving each other, yeah, then we're gonna move in reverse.
00:17:09.839 --> 00:17:10.160
Okay.
00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:16.559
So our external gears were our um sun and our planetary carrier.
00:17:16.799 --> 00:17:17.119
Yeah.
00:17:17.359 --> 00:17:24.079
So if we hold the carrier or allow it not to spin, those planetary opinions still can rotate in the carrier itself.
00:17:24.240 --> 00:17:26.400
They're on bearings, they can move nice and freely.
00:17:26.559 --> 00:17:34.160
So if we drive the sun then and hold the carrier, the sun will be spinning with an external tooth meshing with those planetary opinions.
00:17:34.319 --> 00:17:37.279
That means the planetary opinions rotate the opposite way.
00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:40.319
Okay, and then our ring gear is going to be driven which way?
00:17:40.799 --> 00:17:42.000
Uh the same direction.
00:17:42.240 --> 00:17:44.720
As the carrier, as the carrier, which is in reverse.
00:17:44.960 --> 00:17:45.119
Right.
00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:46.319
Which is pretty cool, actually.
00:17:46.480 --> 00:17:47.200
That's nifty.
00:17:47.359 --> 00:17:47.599
Yeah.
00:17:47.680 --> 00:17:56.240
So we can create a fairly easy reverse just by holding that carrier housing and allowing the gear three to take its, take us through that.
00:17:56.400 --> 00:18:02.079
And we said we drove the sun gear or had the sun gear as the input and had the ring gear as the output.
00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:04.079
Was that overdrive or underdrive?
00:18:04.400 --> 00:18:07.519
So we have our uh sun gear driving our ring.
00:18:07.599 --> 00:18:09.759
So we are in a underdrive.
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:10.400
Exactly.
00:18:10.480 --> 00:18:14.160
We have the smallest gear driving the mid-gear and underdrive condition.
00:18:14.319 --> 00:18:17.359
Now, something you probably will never see on an automotive vehicle.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:24.960
We can flip that around and have the ring gear, which is middle, drive the sun gear, which is smallest, and have an overdrive in reverse.
00:18:25.200 --> 00:18:27.759
Why do you think we wouldn't see that in a car?
00:18:28.400 --> 00:18:31.279
Well, in reverse, we don't really want high speed.
00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:32.720
We we want some torque.
00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:34.079
Need that torque, right?
00:18:34.240 --> 00:18:37.119
That 3,000 pound vehicle needs torque to start moving.
00:18:37.200 --> 00:18:37.359
Yeah.
00:18:37.519 --> 00:18:40.960
So we would use that underdrive reverse in a vehicle.
00:18:41.200 --> 00:18:44.720
And again, that can be held by clutches and bands and whatnot.
00:18:44.799 --> 00:18:51.839
Uh, and uh, the apply pistons or whatnot that are we're gonna grab the different components and start driving them will be all applied.
00:18:51.920 --> 00:18:53.759
And that's another podcast, I think.
00:18:54.000 --> 00:18:57.680
Yeah, I think where we can go in a little bit more detail with some of the more advanced components.
00:18:57.920 --> 00:18:59.200
Yeah, absolutely.
00:18:59.440 --> 00:19:05.279
Okay, so that about sums up our uh planetary gear set and our gear theory.
00:19:05.440 --> 00:19:14.880
Um, hopefully, instructors, students, anyone who's interested can use this information to help them understand how a simple planetary gear set works.
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:16.880
And that's awesome.
00:19:17.119 --> 00:19:21.759
This has been the Talking with SOT podcast with Harnett Gill and Ian Campbell.
00:19:21.920 --> 00:19:23.200
Thanks for listening.
00:00:08.320 --> 00:00:14.320
Welcome to the Talking with the School of Transportation podcast, presented by Centennial College.
00:00:14.480 --> 00:00:17.679
With your hosts, Ian Campbell and Harna Gill.
00:00:17.839 --> 00:00:19.359
Let's get into it now.
00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:22.480
Welcome back to the Talking with the SOT podcast.
00:00:22.640 --> 00:00:27.359
We have a special episode based on something we're working with with Centennial College.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:31.120
That's our OERs, Open Educational Resources.
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:36.399
So these are resources that are available to anyone, uh free of charge.
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:45.920
And the idea is that we want to promote learning and reduce barriers for those who aren't traditionally able to access uh some of the information.
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:54.000
So this OER will be available uh for anyone who's interested in learning about uh what are we covering today, you know?
00:00:54.240 --> 00:00:57.039
Planetary gears, one of my favorite subjects.
00:00:57.359 --> 00:01:02.079
So a planetary gear is something that's utilized in an automatic transmission.
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:05.439
Yeah, a bunch of different uh applications.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:11.120
We can see them in starter motors and in the car where we can want to change the gear ratio for maybe more torque.
00:01:11.280 --> 00:01:13.840
We can see them in uh electric power steering sometimes.
00:01:13.920 --> 00:01:14.879
You see them in there.
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:21.760
And uh mainly, I guess one of the most predominant places would be the transmission, specifically an automatic transmission.
00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:26.799
Uh because we can create a whole bunch of different gear ratios from three different gears.
00:01:26.959 --> 00:01:36.400
Now, in a transmission, we have to add a couple uh two of these together to make it work because of how many uh components can be grabbed or held and applied.
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:43.200
Um, but just the simple planetary gear set is uh pretty impressive overall for just having three gears.
00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:45.920
Uh and those three gears, do you know what they might be?
00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:48.159
I believe I have an idea.
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:55.120
So we have our ring gear, okay, also known as our annulus, and then we have a uh planetary gear.
00:01:55.359 --> 00:01:57.200
What's the planetary gear look like?
00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:02.079
So it's generally composed of uh multiple gears.
00:02:02.400 --> 00:02:03.120
Is that fair to say?
00:02:03.359 --> 00:02:08.240
On a housing on a housing that the housing together called the carrier, essentially.
00:02:08.639 --> 00:02:11.680
And those little gears, do you know what they might be called?
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:14.080
The planetary pinions.
00:02:14.319 --> 00:02:14.479
Okay.
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:20.080
So we have like little planet planetary pinions that kind of rotate around another gear that you haven't said yet.
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:20.879
And do you know what that is?
00:02:21.039 --> 00:02:21.599
Which is the sun.
00:02:21.919 --> 00:02:22.080
Yeah.
00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:27.439
So we have planets that rotate around the sun, and then a ring gear that kind of encapsulates encapsulates it all.
00:02:27.759 --> 00:02:28.560
Holds it all together.
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:29.120
Yeah.
00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:34.080
When we talk about planetary gears, I think we need to start with some basic gear theory.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:38.879
Before we know what the planetaries can do, we kind of have to know what gears do themselves.
00:02:39.039 --> 00:02:39.280
Sure.
00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:48.000
So gears themselves are basically like little levers pushing on another lever that's going to rotate or transmit torque or power or movement from one to the next.
00:02:48.159 --> 00:02:49.199
Does that kind of make sense?
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:49.919
Absolutely.
00:02:50.159 --> 00:02:58.800
And those levers or or gears that we are rotating now, we can change the size or the ratio of them to give us a different output.
00:02:58.960 --> 00:03:10.800
So what we could have is a either a larger gear and a smaller gear, either a large gear driving a small gear or a small gear driving a larger gear, but then I guess that how does that affect our output?
00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:12.719
Well, that's that's a huge factor.
00:03:12.879 --> 00:03:14.400
You think about a bicycle, right?
00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:22.800
And when you're riding a bicycle, you could have a small gear at the front and a big gear at the back, and that's gonna change the amount of effort needed for different applications, right?
00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:27.120
Now a bicycle has a chain on that, but that's still essentially sprockets and gears.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:31.439
Uh so if we have a real small gear, that's gonna be the input.
00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:35.199
And I like to use the words input and output instead of driving or driven.
00:03:35.360 --> 00:03:38.159
I feel it just kind of sends it home a little easier.
00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:44.639
When we say driving and driven, it can get really muddled sometimes when you're thinking about how many components are doing what.
00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:48.240
So if we have the input as a small gear, right?
00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:49.759
Let's say it has 10 teeth.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:50.159
Okay.
00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:54.240
Okay, and the output is a bigger gear, let's say it has 30 teeth.
00:03:54.479 --> 00:03:56.960
What do you think that output might be?
00:03:57.360 --> 00:03:58.319
Like a ratio?
00:03:58.479 --> 00:03:58.719
Yeah.
00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:00.319
So like a three to one ratio.
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:02.159
How'd you come up with three to one?
00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:04.319
That is a great question.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:12.319
So what I did was I took my driven or my output gear divided by my drive or input gear.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:13.039
Exactly.
00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:21.279
So, and I'm glad that you said that with the input beside drive and the output beside driven, because that can really kind of remember what it is.
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:24.720
It's kind of hard when it's like drive over driven and all this kind of stuff.
00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:26.879
So if you can remember the input, right?
00:04:26.959 --> 00:04:30.160
And we have the output over the input will give us that.
00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:39.279
So driven over drive, and if you've taken any classes with me, that's hammered home, uh, gives you that ratio of three to one.
00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:41.759
So, what does that mean, three to one, though?
00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:43.519
Okay, that's a great question.
00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:51.600
Well, uh, for me to turn that big gear at the back, how many rotations do you think I'd have to go on the on the smaller gear?
00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:56.800
So I'd have to go three rotations to get one to get one full rotation on that other one.
00:04:56.959 --> 00:05:00.639
Now that creates a ton of torque because you're moving that gear so much.
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:04.639
Uh you know, you could wheelie on the bicycle pretty easily or whatever that might be.
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:11.120
Or if we're talking about a car, which we're uh eventually going to be talking about, that can get the vehicle up to speed quick.
00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:16.160
Now, the difference between torque and speed, though, is something else we need to talk about.
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:18.800
So there's a direct uh relationship.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:19.199
Yeah.
00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:21.279
And they're like inversely proportional.
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:22.079
Is that fair to say?
00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:26.079
Yeah, the uh you can only have one without the other, essentially.
00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:37.600
You can have a balance between them at times, and that would probably be a one-to-one ratio, which would be, you know, straight through the same speed, maybe a BMX bike or something like that, depending on on who you are.
00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:46.720
Uh, or you could have a high torque, which we just talked about, that three to one or higher, depending on what the application is, or then you could have a speed.
00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:49.920
And what do you think a speed ratio might look like?
00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:54.879
So would this be a value that is maybe less less than one?
00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:55.839
Exactly.
00:05:56.079 --> 00:06:02.399
Like a 0.8 to one or uh 0.25 to 1 would be an extreme overdrive condition.
00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:05.839
So in this overdrive condition, what's changed?
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:08.079
What's how did I achieve this overdrive?
00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:16.319
Well, instead of having a small gear driving a big gear giving us that four to one or three to one ratio, we're gonna have a big gear driving a smaller gear.
00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:23.519
So if I have uh a big gear that spins once, let's let's use the same teeth tooth count, right?
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:28.319
I have a big gear that's that has 30 teeth, and I'm spinning a small gear with 10 teeth.
00:06:28.560 --> 00:06:34.879
For one rotation of that big gear, that other gear is gonna move a third three times.
00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:35.519
Three times.
00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:36.959
Yeah, three times faster.
00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:38.560
So it's moving faster with that.
00:06:38.720 --> 00:06:44.160
We have a large gear that's gonna fly that small gear around and create this overdrive condition.
00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:50.000
And in a vehicle, we want that overdrive condition for the highway speeds because we don't need torque, right?
00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:52.480
So at low speed, we need torque.
00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:54.000
We need to, especially when we're at a stop.
00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:54.480
Exactly.
00:06:54.639 --> 00:06:57.279
We need that breakaway torque to get the vehicle moving.
00:06:57.519 --> 00:07:03.040
And once we're at highway speeds and we're already moving, we don't require as much torque, but we do want more speed.
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:03.680
Exactly.
00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:10.959
So a gear ratio in the car and engineers building vehicles or transmissions will take that all into account.
00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:12.480
How heavy is the vehicle?
00:07:12.560 --> 00:07:27.120
Uh, you think of a uh 18-wheeler truck, the the ratio of those gears are going to be so high because they need to get all that weight and payload to start moving at the stoplight versus you know uh a Chevy Sprint or a Firefly back then.
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:28.959
Firefly, yeah.
00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:31.600
You know, I would have gone with Honda Civic or something.
00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:32.319
Okay, I'm old.
00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:33.839
I'm old, I understand.
00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:40.720
So now if we kind of relate that gear theory to a planetary gear set, oh, there's one thing I forgot actually.
00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:48.240
When you have an external gear rotating with an external gear, what happens to the rotation of those?
00:07:48.480 --> 00:08:02.079
So just so we can visualize that, when we say external gear, we mean that if you look at a gear almost in the traditional sense that the teeth aren't on the outside, and there's two sets of gears that have teeth on the outside, mesh external gear.
00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:03.439
Yeah, meshing to one another.
00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:08.160
So when they rotate together directly, they'll rotate in opposite directions.
00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:08.800
Exactly.
00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:11.279
So it's gonna change the direction of rotation.
00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:16.560
So if one's rotating clockwise, that other one's gonna rotate counterclockwise.
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:27.360
Now, another thing before we get into the planetaries and how they're built, is if you have an internal gear, which means the tooth, the the teeth are on the inside of the gear meshing with another one.
00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:39.279
If that's so there's a there's a gear that uh has the teeth on the inside, and then on the inside of that, there's another gear that has external and they are uh in mesh with each other.
00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:41.440
So they would move in the same direction.
00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:42.080
Exactly.
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:46.879
Instead of going opposite at this point, that internal gear is going to drive it the same direction.
00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:49.600
And we need to know that for the planetary gear set.
00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:54.480
So now moving into the planetary gear set, we have those three components we talked about.
00:08:54.639 --> 00:08:56.799
The sun would be the smallest of the gears.
00:08:57.120 --> 00:08:59.759
Okay, and the sun has uh external teeth.
00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:01.039
External teeth.
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:02.639
Then we have the ring.
00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:08.799
Now, this is kind of a tricky subject because the ring goes over top of everything, right?
00:09:08.960 --> 00:09:10.320
And has the internal teeth.
00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:12.720
So physically it's the biggest gear.
00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:27.360
Okay, but when we do the math, it can't be the biggest gear because the carrier or the planetary carrier has more has if you do the proper equation, comes out with the most tooth count based on that ring gear and the sun gear.
00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:36.000
So the ring gear would be considered the middle gear, even though it's the biggest, and that really kind of messes people up, uh, especially when you're learning in the classroom.
00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:38.720
And then the carrier we're going to consider the biggest gear.
00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:41.360
Okay, so let's let's just sum that up.
00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:43.759
That's the sun gear, which is the smallest gear.
00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:45.279
It has external teeth.
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:45.759
Yeah.
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:52.080
The um the planetary carrier um has external.
00:09:52.559 --> 00:09:53.279
External teeth.
00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:54.639
External teeth as well.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:10:01.519
And then finally we get um the the annulus or the ring gear, which has the internal teeth.
00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:02.240
Internal.
00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:06.399
Okay, so depending on the component, we have either internal or external teeth.
00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:16.960
And we said the sun is the smallest, the ring is the second largest, yeah, or middle, I guess you would say, and then the largest overall is the planetary carrier.
00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:17.440
Yes.
00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:26.720
And now that we've kind of identified what the largest gear is, we can kind of manipulate that overdrive and underdrive condition based on that.
00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:39.360
Because if the carrier or the planetary carrier is considered the largest gear, if we are then making that the input or drive gear, everything below that will be in an overdrive condition.
00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:46.879
Now, if we flip that and make that the output or the driven gear, everything's gonna be underdrive and underdrive condition.
00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:53.279
So we can manipulate what we want to do based on uh what the carrier is doing, right?
00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:58.159
So do you want to try and like find the slowest gear we could possibly make based on that?
00:10:58.399 --> 00:10:58.639
Sure.
00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:05.919
Now to get our slowest gear where we'd have the most torque, we want a small gear driving the largest possible gear.
00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:06.399
Exactly.
00:11:06.559 --> 00:11:08.399
So our smallest gear is the sun.
00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:09.039
Yeah.
00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:12.080
Okay, and our largest gear is the planetary carrier.
00:11:12.240 --> 00:11:12.559
Perfect.
00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:15.279
So we want the sun to drive the planetary carrier.
00:11:15.519 --> 00:11:17.759
Now there's one thing we haven't talked about yet.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:21.759
We can have an input and an output, but what about that last thing?
00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:23.519
We have to do something with that.
00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:26.240
We gotta hold it, we gotta hold it in place.
00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:31.360
We want it not to spin so that therefore that it can transmit the torque through that planetary set.
00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:33.200
How do we do that in a transmission?
00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:38.639
In a transmission, we use bands or clutches that can hold that gear to the case.
00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:43.440
Okay, so they apply pressure to stop it from rotating and make it a held gear.
00:11:43.679 --> 00:11:44.879
A held component, yes.
00:11:45.120 --> 00:11:45.360
Okay.
00:11:45.840 --> 00:11:46.159
Okay.
00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:58.879
So if we were to use a band or clutch to hold our uh our ring gear, yeah, okay, and we had our sun gear drive the planetary, yeah, we'd be in an underdrive.
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:00.960
The the most underdrive.
00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:01.919
The most underdrive.
00:12:02.159 --> 00:12:05.840
Yeah, the most extreme underdrive that a that that planetary can make.
00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:07.519
And I guess that's a good point, too.
00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:14.320
We'll have multiple uh potential underdrive gears, yeah, right, because we have a different combination.
00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:19.120
So when you say most underdrive, it is the the greatest ratio of underdrive.
00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:26.080
Yeah, well, and we teach this in the lab, but you can get up to eight different functions from one simple planetary gear set.
00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:29.279
From those three components, we can make up to eight.
00:12:29.360 --> 00:12:34.399
So we could get a slow underdrive, which I call super slow, which is what we just discussed.
00:12:34.559 --> 00:12:35.600
Which is what we just discussed.
00:12:35.759 --> 00:12:37.519
We can get a fast underdrive.
00:12:37.919 --> 00:12:39.440
So let's pause here for a second.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:42.080
How would I achieve a fast underdrive?
00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:47.679
Well, when we talk about fast underdrive, the carrier still needs to be the output because it's in underdrive.
00:12:47.840 --> 00:12:52.080
But then we want the medium gear, which is the ring, to be driving that carrier.
00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:58.080
So we're gonna hold the sun, the ring will drive the carrier, and we're in a higher underdrive.
00:12:58.240 --> 00:13:00.320
It's not super slow, it's just slow.
00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:02.720
Now, if we were to look at a ratio for that.
00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:03.279
Sure.
00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:07.759
And we said the three to one ratio was our super underdrive, I think you called it.
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:08.080
Yeah.
00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:11.759
What would the ratio look like for our next underdrive?
00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:14.960
Uh it could be anything, depending on how they engineer it.
00:13:15.039 --> 00:13:21.279
But probably, you know, if that first gear was three to one, maybe we're at one and a half to one or something like that, right?
00:13:21.440 --> 00:13:26.879
So that that second gear essentially, if we're thinking about a car, that's kind of that second gear stage.
00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:31.200
So we're already rolling, so we don't need as much torque, but we want to start getting some speed.
00:13:31.360 --> 00:13:32.240
Yeah, exactly that.
00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:37.679
And then you third gear in the in the grand scheme of things would be kind of like direct drive.
00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:38.799
A one to one.
00:13:38.960 --> 00:13:41.120
And direct drive would be a one-to-one ratio.
00:13:41.200 --> 00:13:43.679
Now, in order to achieve this, it's kind of simple.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:45.440
We don't need to hold anything now.
00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:48.639
We just want two inputs, any two inputs.
00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:55.039
If we have one input on the sun and one put input on the ring, that carrier is going to follow in the same speed as the other.
00:13:55.120 --> 00:13:58.399
It's going to kind of lock them all together and rotate at the same speed.
00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:01.919
We could have the carrier in the sun or the carrier in the ring as well.
00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:04.399
Just hold any two inputs.
00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:06.320
A lot of students are like, we have to hold two.
00:14:06.399 --> 00:14:09.679
And I'm like, no, you would go nowhere because it's not driving.
00:14:09.759 --> 00:14:11.919
We need to have two inputs in that direction.
00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:18.000
So direct drive, two inputs, any two inputs will create a one-to-one ratio.
00:14:18.320 --> 00:14:18.639
Okay.
00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:25.200
So far, we have our super slow underdrive, we have our next uh underdrive, and then we have our one-to-one ratio.
00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:25.679
Yeah.
00:14:25.840 --> 00:14:27.120
And then where do we go from here?
00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:28.639
Well, we need to go to overdrive.
00:14:28.799 --> 00:14:29.360
Overdrive.
00:14:29.519 --> 00:14:29.679
Yeah.
00:14:29.759 --> 00:14:37.679
So now instead of having a higher ratio, like four to one, three to one, we're gonna have a less than one ratio as we talked about earlier.
00:14:37.919 --> 00:14:44.080
So if I wanted to get an overdrive condition, I then need to drive or have an input on which gear.
00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:46.799
So we need the carrier to be driving something else.
00:14:46.879 --> 00:14:49.840
So we could have the carrier driving the ring.
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:50.320
Yep.
00:14:50.480 --> 00:14:52.320
And that would give us an overdrive.
00:14:52.559 --> 00:14:53.039
It would.
00:14:53.200 --> 00:14:56.159
Now is that fast overdrive or slow overdrive?
00:14:56.399 --> 00:14:58.000
I'm gonna call that a slow overdrive.
00:14:58.240 --> 00:14:58.799
You nailed it.
00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:02.879
That's the slow overdrive because we have the biggest gear driving the second biggest gear.
00:15:03.039 --> 00:15:10.639
So that's gonna give us an overdrive condition, which would be less than one to one, but it's not the fastest or that fastest overdrive we can make.
00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:15.120
And ratio-wise, that would probably look like something like a 0.9 or 0.8 to one.
00:15:15.440 --> 00:15:16.320
Yeah, around that.
00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:24.399
And then if we want to get our fastest overdrive, we would have our uh carrier driving the sun.
00:15:24.720 --> 00:15:29.120
We have the largest gear, which is the carrier, considered largest gear driving that sun gear.
00:15:29.279 --> 00:15:36.639
So if our carrier is 40 teeth and our sun is 10 teeth, that's that's a crazy ratio, right?
00:15:36.720 --> 00:15:37.360
What's that gonna be?
00:15:37.600 --> 00:15:38.720
0.25 to 1.
00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:40.080
0.25 to 1.
00:15:40.159 --> 00:15:41.919
So that's gonna be moving super fast.
00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:49.279
And you if you have a planetary gear set or uh, you know, if you look one up, you'll see that move really quickly based on the rotation of the carrier.
00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:53.039
Uh, and that works great in a highway application or a highway speeds.
00:15:53.679 --> 00:15:56.000
So we've done uh a few now.
00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:57.840
I think we have three spots left.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:15:58.960
Yeah, we did five.
00:15:59.200 --> 00:15:59.440
Yeah.
00:15:59.600 --> 00:16:02.799
So the next one we can talk about is neutral.
00:16:03.039 --> 00:16:03.360
Sure.
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:04.399
Pretty easy.
00:16:04.559 --> 00:16:09.840
You can have one input, and as long as you don't hold anything, it's just spinning freely.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:10.240
Okay.
00:16:10.399 --> 00:16:11.360
So it's freewheeling.
00:16:11.440 --> 00:16:17.440
So you can have one input moving, and in a transmission, we usually have that input shaft that's rotating, right?
00:16:17.519 --> 00:16:19.039
But nothing else is being held.
00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:22.799
So it's just spinning inside the transmission, doing nothing.
00:16:23.279 --> 00:16:23.600
Okay.
00:16:23.759 --> 00:16:25.600
So neutral is pretty straightforward.
00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:26.799
Very straightforward.
00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:30.080
And then lastly, we need to get it in reverse, right?
00:16:30.159 --> 00:16:31.919
We need that car to back up.
00:16:32.240 --> 00:16:46.480
So with this planetary set, we can get two reverse speeds, but in a car, we can't really do that because when we hold it in our hands or on a planetary gear trainer, you can move those things pretty freely, hold anything, move anything.
00:16:46.720 --> 00:16:49.840
In a car, we can only hold certain components.
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:56.159
And usually we have to double up this planetary gear set to have two of them to make it really work for us.
00:16:56.399 --> 00:17:01.279
So um, when we talk about reverse, is there a way to get that?
00:17:01.600 --> 00:17:04.640
So, well, we sort of talked about this with our uh gears.
00:17:04.799 --> 00:17:09.680
If we have two external gears driving each other, yeah, then we're gonna move in reverse.
00:17:09.839 --> 00:17:10.160
Okay.
00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:16.559
So our external gears were our um sun and our planetary carrier.
00:17:16.799 --> 00:17:17.119
Yeah.
00:17:17.359 --> 00:17:24.079
So if we hold the carrier or allow it not to spin, those planetary opinions still can rotate in the carrier itself.
00:17:24.240 --> 00:17:26.400
They're on bearings, they can move nice and freely.
00:17:26.559 --> 00:17:34.160
So if we drive the sun then and hold the carrier, the sun will be spinning with an external tooth meshing with those planetary opinions.
00:17:34.319 --> 00:17:37.279
That means the planetary opinions rotate the opposite way.
00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:40.319
Okay, and then our ring gear is going to be driven which way?
00:17:40.799 --> 00:17:42.000
Uh the same direction.
00:17:42.240 --> 00:17:44.720
As the carrier, as the carrier, which is in reverse.
00:17:44.960 --> 00:17:45.119
Right.
00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:46.319
Which is pretty cool, actually.
00:17:46.480 --> 00:17:47.200
That's nifty.
00:17:47.359 --> 00:17:47.599
Yeah.
00:17:47.680 --> 00:17:56.240
So we can create a fairly easy reverse just by holding that carrier housing and allowing the gear three to take its, take us through that.
00:17:56.400 --> 00:18:02.079
And we said we drove the sun gear or had the sun gear as the input and had the ring gear as the output.
00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:04.079
Was that overdrive or underdrive?
00:18:04.400 --> 00:18:07.519
So we have our uh sun gear driving our ring.
00:18:07.599 --> 00:18:09.759
So we are in a underdrive.
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:10.400
Exactly.
00:18:10.480 --> 00:18:14.160
We have the smallest gear driving the mid-gear and underdrive condition.
00:18:14.319 --> 00:18:17.359
Now, something you probably will never see on an automotive vehicle.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:24.960
We can flip that around and have the ring gear, which is middle, drive the sun gear, which is smallest, and have an overdrive in reverse.
00:18:25.200 --> 00:18:27.759
Why do you think we wouldn't see that in a car?
00:18:28.400 --> 00:18:31.279
Well, in reverse, we don't really want high speed.
00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:32.720
We we want some torque.
00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:34.079
Need that torque, right?
00:18:34.240 --> 00:18:37.119
That 3,000 pound vehicle needs torque to start moving.
00:18:37.200 --> 00:18:37.359
Yeah.
00:18:37.519 --> 00:18:40.960
So we would use that underdrive reverse in a vehicle.
00:18:41.200 --> 00:18:44.720
And again, that can be held by clutches and bands and whatnot.
00:18:44.799 --> 00:18:51.839
Uh, and uh, the apply pistons or whatnot that are we're gonna grab the different components and start driving them will be all applied.
00:18:51.920 --> 00:18:53.759
And that's another podcast, I think.
00:18:54.000 --> 00:18:57.680
Yeah, I think where we can go in a little bit more detail with some of the more advanced components.
00:18:57.920 --> 00:18:59.200
Yeah, absolutely.
00:18:59.440 --> 00:19:05.279
Okay, so that about sums up our uh planetary gear set and our gear theory.
00:19:05.440 --> 00:19:14.880
Um, hopefully, instructors, students, anyone who's interested can use this information to help them understand how a simple planetary gear set works.
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:16.880
And that's awesome.
00:19:17.119 --> 00:19:21.759
This has been the Talking with SOT podcast with Harnett Gill and Ian Campbell.
00:19:21.920 --> 00:19:23.200
Thanks for listening.
