ABOUT THIS EPISODE
A grooming certificate is easy to hang on a wall. The hard part is keeping a real dog safe when it shifts on the table, hates its feet touched, or freezes up the moment the dryer turns on. That is the gap we dig into as we explain what sets Hound Therapy’s grooming academy apart and why we built the program around one simple rule: humanity over vanity.
We talk candidly about what most grooming school ads sound like and why the details matter, especially the difference between a short program and a 1,500-hour hands-on dog grooming training track. You will hear why repetition is the real curriculum: scissor safety, clipper control, coat and skin awareness, dog behavior, and learning to work in real life with real clients in the lobby. We also cover the situations you cannot simulate on a model dog, like handling movement, fear, restraint, and the tough conversations around matting and realistic outcomes.
We also share how our curriculum supports different learning speeds, why we keep mentoring beyond graduation, and how decades of experience shape what we teach, including the mistakes we do not want new groomers to repeat. If you are looking for a grooming academy in North Texas, comparing pet grooming schools, or trying to understand what “professional groomer” should actually mean, this conversation will help you ask better questions before you invest your time and money.
If this helped you, subscribe for more grooming, daycare, and pet care insights, share the episode with a future groomer, and leave a review so more pet parents and students can find us.

00:00:03.759 --> 00:00:12.320
Welcome to Tales Talk Grooming Chronicles with Health Therapy, the podcast where we talk all things pet groups, daycare, academy, and more.
00:00:12.720 --> 00:00:18.320
Hosted by Shannon and Tanya of Health Therapy, serving pet owners across North Texas.
00:00:18.559 --> 00:00:26.800
We're here to share expert tips, hilarious pet stories, and the inside scoop on keeping your furry friends happy and healthy.
00:00:26.960 --> 00:00:30.079
Our motto, humanity over vanity.
00:00:30.160 --> 00:00:32.479
And don't worry, we don't fight.
00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:33.600
Let's get started.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:55.039
If you've ever wondered what sets Hound Therapy's grooming academy apart, today's episode breaks down the philosophy, the training approach, and the heart behind the program built on humanity over vanity.
00:00:55.280 --> 00:00:56.240
Welcome back, everyone.
00:00:56.320 --> 00:01:03.280
I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer back in the studio with Shannon and Tanya, professional groomers at Hound Therapy.
00:01:03.439 --> 00:01:05.359
Hi, ladies, how's it going?
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:06.799
Fantastic.
00:01:07.280 --> 00:01:07.760
Great.
00:01:07.920 --> 00:01:09.439
Well, let's get into it.
00:01:09.599 --> 00:01:15.840
What makes Hound Therapy's grooming academy different from other grooming programs out there?
00:01:16.319 --> 00:01:19.359
Well, let's just say that all grooming schools are not the same.
00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:20.480
Um, period.
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:24.239
If you're looking for grooming schools, they all sound really, really familiar.
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:31.920
Um, you've got uh hands-on training, dog behavior, safety, breed-specific grooming, and career preparation.
00:01:32.079 --> 00:01:33.359
You hear all of it.
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:36.719
And here's the one thing that you need to ask yourself.
00:01:36.879 --> 00:01:41.200
And I just I feel so passionately about this, which is why we opened our school in here.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:41.599
Yes.
00:01:41.760 --> 00:01:44.319
Um, for the amount of hours that we did.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:46.640
It's it's a lot of time and dedication here.
00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:59.120
Um, you can see with our our other student, you know, grooms that come in here, we've talked about those and we talk about how how much work it takes for us just to help a pet parent and their dog.
00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:01.040
In here, we're teaching all of that.
00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:05.359
And there are schools, they uh our school is 1,500 hours.
00:02:05.599 --> 00:02:18.319
Most schools that the state says is an accredited school for 480 hours, that means you're basically your other thousand hours are on the job training at somebody else's shop.
00:02:18.719 --> 00:02:21.439
You're just released, you have a certificate.
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:29.439
The things that you need to ask yourself is, you know, are you are you worried about getting to get your certificate so that you can get to work?
00:02:29.520 --> 00:02:35.919
Or do you want to learn how to do this job correctly and safely and provide a good service for these animals?
00:02:36.080 --> 00:02:38.479
And and that's the kind of people that we are looking for.
00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:44.800
And that's that the type of students that graduate from here when they go to get jobs, they know this job.
00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:47.840
They are ready, they feel confident, and 100%.
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:59.039
I just cannot stress enough at 400 hours, 300 hours, and most of those are not even in-person hands-on training.
00:02:59.199 --> 00:02:59.840
They're online.
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:01.599
You cannot learn this job online.
00:03:02.159 --> 00:03:04.080
You you just cannot use it.
00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:13.919
Um I will say you can use um some video help to learn this job, but as far as like the basics, things like that, you really just you can't.
00:03:14.240 --> 00:03:17.599
Even if you have a video, you have to have dog practice on and it's gotta be a live dog.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:22.240
I mean, you're learning on uh you've gotta learn everything, dog behavior.
00:03:22.639 --> 00:03:28.400
Um you we do this in real life in real time with people in the lobby.
00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:32.879
You learn how to check in, you have to understand what the client is asking for.
00:03:33.039 --> 00:03:43.360
You have to be able to match your grims, you have to be able to use scissors safely, use clippers safely, use the amount of pressure, understand and identify codes and types.
00:03:43.520 --> 00:03:45.360
Uh there is so much to know.
00:03:45.439 --> 00:03:46.240
It's repetitive.
00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:47.120
You have to do it.
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:53.280
And if you don't do this on a daily basis, we require three days a week, at least if you minimum.
00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:59.680
If you can do the four or five, you'll learn it that much, that, that much faster and pick it up that much, that much better.
00:03:59.919 --> 00:04:14.080
Everybody struggles with something that you have to kind of find what your hurdle is, but you're not gonna learn it by watching a video and having a a little dog on your table and then trying to convince somebody that you know you're a dog groomer.
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:19.439
Um, and unfortunately, the state of Texas doesn't feel like you need any education at all.
00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:25.360
Um, and then they've deemed, you know, that they'll help you pay for 480 hours of it.
00:04:25.439 --> 00:04:28.160
It's just absolutely mind-boggling to me.
00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:38.879
And I mean, you can there are grooming schools where th they'll have you learn on a model dog and everything goes fine and dandy until the dog starts moving.
00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:45.519
And then you have no idea how to correct it, how to restrain it, or it hates its feet being touched.
00:04:45.759 --> 00:04:45.920
Yeah.
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:47.600
What do you do if a dog moves?
00:04:47.680 --> 00:04:49.519
W what do you do if it isn't perfect?
00:04:49.759 --> 00:04:51.759
Um, what do you do if it's scared of the dryer?
00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:56.160
How do you how do you confront a client um about a matted dog?
00:04:56.319 --> 00:04:58.480
Um on a model dog, you don't get any of that.
00:04:58.800 --> 00:05:10.720
Uh well, and and nor do you get that in 480 hours of not all in school personal training with 50 other people in your just don't understand.
00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:23.439
Uh and you know, we we've done we're we've done this podcast because we've been looking into um, you know, comparing with other schools, maybe opening up another school, doing some other stuff that we really feel passionate in what we do.
00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:28.319
We love working with the animals and and we want, we want to give it back.
00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:51.600
But there just are uh there just are not every school that we have seen that has popped up within the last two years, and there were none, there was maybe one that have have popped up within the hound therapy, they're 300 hours, they're 400 hours, they're yeah, they they are not teaching you what they are telling you that they're teaching you.
00:05:51.759 --> 00:05:54.959
So I would say re-ask, what are you out to get?
00:05:55.120 --> 00:05:56.160
Are you out to get a diploma?
00:05:56.319 --> 00:05:58.800
Are you out to get um a career?
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:05.839
So, Shannon, how does your curriculum support students who learn at different paces?
00:06:06.079 --> 00:06:11.120
We learn, we we do alternating enrollment for us specifically.
00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:16.720
Uh so if wherever you are, once you've completed what you know how to complete.
00:06:16.800 --> 00:06:22.639
So some people pick up bathing faster, some people pick up scissoring faster, some people clip up, pick up clipper work.
00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:28.879
And and I'll be honest that some of it, if you start in the wintertime, you usually pick up scissoring first because the coats are longer.
00:06:29.120 --> 00:06:35.439
If you start in the in the in the summertime, down to a breeze, you learn how to how to how to keep those blades cool.
00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:37.040
But everybody learns it.
00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:39.439
And I have never seen anybody that hasn't.
00:06:39.519 --> 00:06:43.199
We we have a year that is dedicated to teaching you.
00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:45.040
We do not go away anywhere.
00:06:45.279 --> 00:06:46.079
We are here.
00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:47.759
You can stay here a little longer.
00:06:47.920 --> 00:06:48.639
We are always here.
00:06:48.800 --> 00:06:59.120
If you get a job and you need to come back and and practice on a specific breed because you don't do it very often, we all we we are continuing throughout your entire career.
00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:04.240
We don't ever just leave you alone and hope that you know you've got it when you're done here.
00:07:04.480 --> 00:07:06.000
I've said it once and I'll say it again.
00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:07.759
Your dogs are not guinea pigs.
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:09.600
No, no.
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:14.079
And we have about one instructor per student at all times.
00:07:14.319 --> 00:07:23.360
So it's it's I mean, you really it's if we were to hire somebody to work here, I would pay them and I would teach them the same way that if if you're coming here to work.
00:07:23.519 --> 00:07:26.720
You are learning how to do this job from the ground up.
00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:34.560
Um, and without there being any kind of role models that are willing to teach the secrets, the trades, how do you do this?
00:07:34.639 --> 00:07:35.600
Where do you buy your blades?
00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:37.279
How do you, how do you sharpen them?
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:38.800
How do you handle a client?
00:07:38.959 --> 00:07:40.160
How do you handle a dog?
00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:41.199
Where do you get?
00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:44.240
We handle all of that in here every day.
00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:46.560
And we are happy to share our experiences with you.
00:07:46.639 --> 00:07:47.279
And so we do.
00:07:47.360 --> 00:07:52.959
And we want to produce people out there that that want to learn how to do this in the right way.
00:07:53.120 --> 00:07:59.839
We want to, we want to give them that opportunity and that chance, but it takes every bit of one year to get the bare minimum down.
00:08:00.160 --> 00:08:10.319
So I'm so curious, how does the knowledge that you both have contribute to the wisdom that you've integrated into the grooming school today?
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:15.279
Well, I mean, we have over a hundred years of experience at this job.
00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:18.560
I've been doing this for 45 years, and you know, I've learned from failures.
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:25.199
So we teach you almost what not to do uh versus what to do is almost just as important in here.
00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:26.639
So you learn from our mistakes.
00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:29.360
And yeah, I mean, I've been doing it for about 10 years.
00:08:29.439 --> 00:08:35.759
I don't have anything on 45 years, but I've been doing it for about 10 years, and I'm a self-taught groomer for the most part.
00:08:35.840 --> 00:08:39.840
Um, I mean, Shannon gave me all of her old equipment and I was like, yeah, I can do this.
00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:44.080
And I pretty much taught myself, and I did it all wrong for a very long time.
00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:52.480
And and she and she was with uh somebody who actually um was a very good groomer who took the time to teach yourself how to use some other skills.
00:08:52.799 --> 00:08:54.639
But not everybody has that opportunity.
00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:55.120
Yeah.
00:08:55.279 --> 00:08:59.360
Um, you you can't there there are not a lot of grooming schools available.
00:08:59.600 --> 00:09:03.919
So you have to almost you have to pass it forward if you're a good groomer.
00:09:04.080 --> 00:09:06.559
But here's the thing every groomer grooms differently.
00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:08.320
So what is what is standard?
00:09:08.480 --> 00:09:10.240
What what is what is normal?
00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:12.960
What looks good to you may not look good to somebody else.
00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:15.840
What is your normal isn't somebody else's normal.
00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:17.840
So we try to teach all of that.
00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:22.320
We have so much, we have younger, we have older, we have a lot of experience in this shop.
00:09:22.480 --> 00:09:26.559
So we try to hit it from every, we target it from every angle, if that makes sense.
00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:30.159
It's you know, it's uh you learned here, I learned here, we learned here.
00:09:30.240 --> 00:09:31.919
We have it all under one roof.
00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:36.639
And we really we don't just dictate this is how it's always done.
00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:40.240
Because it's that's not that's not how this business is run.
00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:45.200
Well, thank you both for breaking down what makes your academy stand out.
00:09:45.440 --> 00:09:48.559
Always powerful to hear the heart behind the program.
00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:50.720
We'll see everyone next time.
00:09:54.240 --> 00:09:57.840
That's a wrap for this episode of Tale Talk with Hound Therapy.
