ABOUT THIS EPISODE
What happens when being good at something becomes the reason everyone expects you to keep doing it?
In this mini episode, Shae explores the difference between capability and capacity—and what happens when workplaces begin treating a person's demonstrated ability as evidence of unlimited availability.
For high-capacity Black women, navigating difficult conditions can become so familiar that other people begin seeing the outcome without considering what it takes to produce it. Over time, what you can do may become what everyone expects you to do.
But capability is not unlimited capacity.
This episode invites you to examine the assumptions that form when your ability becomes predictable, the expectations your environment builds around that ability, and the difference between being capable of doing something and having the capacity to sustain it.
Mini Practice: Identify one thing people consistently rely on you to handle. Ask yourself: When did my ability to do this become an expectation that I would continue doing it?
You don't have to solve the answer today. Start by noticing.
Want to explore the question more deeply? Join us in the SwivelledIllusions™ Magazine, where we examine the assumptions, language, and workplace conditions shaping how human capacity is understood.

They're responding to who they've already decided you are.
And you can spend so much energy trying to convince someone that you've changed that you accidentally make their recognition of you part of your own process.
