So business women special for businesswomen. The Catch, which is starring Emma Stone, it's the rom com. Has started filming. Nice. it's being described as Bull Durham meets Notting Hill. So I'm excited for that. Yeah. I hope it comes out in theaters. Me too. Let's do a theatrical release. Yeah. the night a night of the seven kingdoms season two has wrapped filming, which is exciting because like it's out on pace for like a normal season of TV. Instead of like years between each. Yeah. I hate that. And we really need our Sunday night HBO shows as a society. Do Alden Ironric has been cast alongside Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the new Miami Vice eighty five. Mm. So he's he was Han Solo in the solo movie. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. okay. He was in a couple of things. He's cute. He's good. He reminds me of Brody. Okay. I'll add that to the list. Brody is George Clooney to me. That's like all the way. It freaks me out. It's high price. I know. It's the mammoths. It is. It's very much the I don't see it. But I love that you guys do. I like it's it's if I've just seen a movie with George Clooney, I like can't look Brody in the eyes. It's like, okay. This is very weird. Okay. The did you guys watch the trailer for A Tale of Two Cities with Kit Harrington, Jones Snow? I didn't see it. It was in our Insta. It gets lost in the Instagram TV because it's in Instagram. I like haven't been on Instagram. I saw it, but it was boring, so I stopped watching it. It was what is it called again? A Tale of Two Cities. okay. And it's it it's for MGM plus. I didn't know that was even a thing. And I don't know. Yeah. Like I wanna see it 'cause I don't think I've ever actually read the book. I haven't either. But we'll see. Yeah. He's cute. He's cute. Yeah. Warner Brothers has made six offers to Barbie's creative team and all six have been denied. Nice. Good fact. I love that news. I know I do too. I really hope they don't do it. I do too. And I feel like that's what they're trying to do. Like just wait out till December. I hope so. They're free. Yeah, what are we doing? Yeah. Okay. Any other news? The kids are back in school. You're not gonna hear any background noise if you did. Yes. It's a good time. Happen back in school. Sleep depressed. That's just the way to go. Yeah. Yeah. So better. Those early mornings are they get to be with their friends. They'd rather be with their friends. And with me. And learning all the things. Like school's fun. Like it's not fun when you're in it, but like, I'm like, you just get to learn stuff all day. It's cool. As an adult, you're like, I that train. Can I come? Yeah. Holly was showing me a TikTok about like the things you learn in school, and it's like The type of clouds. Like this is really important as an adult. Like what the different clouds are. It is fun. Stop, drop, and roll. Just all these things. We were giggling. Yeah. Yeah. But it that's just like having knowledge is never a bad thing. Katie's Katie's math class, I have to buy her a calculator for. Two T T I T I eighty nine or whatever. Yeah. Made me happy. Nice. It was only like thirteen bucks. I know. I was this was ninety dollars when I was and they're way smaller. It was like a way smaller computer in our bag. Yeah. That you would draw. Uh-huh. And peop boys would write boobies. yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. I was teasing Miller because I was like, wait, what math were you on? He's like junior math. And I was like, I was an A P calculus. And he's like, Mom, I would be way better at math than you if I tried. You're like I was like, let's see. Poke your money where you're Hopefully he like gets the That's why I would that's why I said it like well. I I was an AP too and I didn't great proficient if I was like anyway. That's funny though. It was funny. I was like I was pretty good at math. Yeah. Comedy college math this year. like lady college That's A P, right? Same thing? No? What is college math? It's just a C E So do they does it transfer to any college? He gets credit. Yeah. That's just like ten fifty. I'm like, but Kevin's like, kids do so bad in this, so we really have to keep on top of that. Kevin has to keep on top of that. I know. No, no, I was which one of two is doing? Kevin doesn't know algebra. I'm like, okay. algebra's the only one I know. I mean to I mean algebra. It's the only one I got. And I assume that's what it is. I was an A P but it was just like if you took the A P class for Corsai, you got or A P test at the end of the year you got an A. And that's how it's not. Did you have Corsai? Yeah. I think I got a one on the test. Two lens. And I my my junior year I was like a student body officer and I really got into that instead of like keeping up with schooling. Yeah. Yeah. your junior year, that's the like important one. Like I know. Trust me. I know. Yeah. That was fine. Yeah. I think I did get out of my honors chemistry class. Ooh, yes. Ooh, yeah. Tate. Mm hmm. He was terrible. He was the wrestling coach, right? No, it was maybe it wasn't Tate. Anyway, he later didn't he have a son? Yeah. That was he was like a health teacher. Aaron Tates. Yeah. Yeah, he was my age. I I had Coach Tate for health and he was like a total douchebag. I had it with like Nick Red and and you let all the boys get away with anything. Yeah, they all got A's and I got like a B. I'm like, but I guarantee my work is better than theirs. They didn't even turn anything in. For sure. Yeah. I was ticked. He was annoying. Anyway. Yeah. didn't he also teach weightlifting? Yes. Yes. But he was not the one that it was good. Groth by the time he was gone. And when he's the one that gave me the B plus the mom and still is mad about it. Ruined my four point E. That's so stupid. I know. But I didn't really go. Sure. A B plus was kinda nice. It was a T A class. I mean. Yeah, that's what I did. I followed in your footsteps. You did. Well I just took the class. I did both. We took the class and then UTA the class. Yeah. Anyway. Blanche was alive and well as in our high school. Mom was yeah. Mom's still mad about it. She is. It's funny. Yeah. It's good. She should be. Yeah. Okay. Should we get into it? Yes. Okay, where we are doing a few good men. So full spoilers ahead if you haven't seen it. It was directed by the late great Rob Reiner. He's so good, guys. He's so good. Yeah. I like noticed a lot while I was watching his camera work. And like timing and just really good. Yeah. It was released in nineteen ninety four. I don't have the date. Why didn't I put that in? but it was like I we've done movies this year already, but it's such a crazy year for movies. You've got like Aladdin, Reservoir Dogs, Batman Returns. wait, is that what's Chris O'Donnell? Batnips? I think it's bat knit. Is that legendary batnips? let's see. A f a few good men. My cousin Vinny. Which is funny, those two are in. Wait, did you say ninety four? Mm-hmm. Yeah. It's ninety two. Is it ninety two? Yes. Okay, well then that's why I'm dumb. That's fine. I was like, I swear it said ninety two, but I wasn't. No, you're probably right. 'Cause I don't know why it's not in here. I didn't put it in. It's fine. I think Lonnie found it. River Wild was a 94. yeah, I think you're right. so my cousin Vinny, Home Alone 2, Wayne's World, Muppet Christmas Carol, Bromstoker's Dracula, Patriot Games, Last of the Mohicans, Basic Instinct. White Men Can't Jump. Death Becomes Her, The Bodyguard, Sister Act, Mighty Ducks, Zen of a Woman. Hoo. Malcolm X, Beethoven, Twin Peaks, Firewalk with Me, Lethal Weapon Three, A River Runs Through It. Mm. Glenn Gary. Brad Pitt. Everybody. Yeah. Sneakers, Lace. Jas not Jason, David. Street Aaron. Yeah. But he's not even good in that one. Like he no, just River Wild. Honey I blew up the kids. Aww. Carrie Russell. As a teen. She's the babysitter. Is she? Yeah, in the second one. In the second one. Because the first one's the eighties-ish. Yeah. I assume it came out. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. so good. Alien Three Ferngly. I love Ferngly. I do too. One of my favorite What's his face? Tim Gurry. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's so good. Encino Manly. I love Brendan Fraser. Captain Ron. yeah. And far and away. So this this year was literally the peak of Tom Cruise, too. Yeah. Totally. far and away, Tom Cruise. His hair's better in that one. It is. Yes. It's like it's some bleach wave to it. Longer. Okay, so speaking of Tom Cruise, he was he was Tom Cruise by the time this movie came out. But his first movie is in nineteen eighty one for well, his first big one is Taps. Mm. Tiaps. Quietly Play. Taps. And then he does a couple other ones. And then Risky Business in eighty three. That's his big breakout underwear dancing scene. Mm-hmm. Legend in eighty-five. Mm-hmm. All fancy boy. Top Gun in eighty six. Color of Money in eighty six. Cocktail in eighty eight. Young guns in eighty-eight. Rainman in eighty eight. Whoa, he was busy. Mm-hmm. Born on the fourth of July in eighty nine, Days of Thunder in nineteen ninety, where he meets Nicole Far and Away in ninety two and this in ninety two. And then the next year he does like The Firm and then ninety four is Interview with a Vampire, ninety six is Mission Impossible, ninety s and Jerry Maguire in ninety six. So like it's a crazy run. He doesn't have like everything, many like breaks misses. Yeah. No. Or misses. And they're all yeah. Like yes. It's crazy. Dang. And then he does Eyes White Shot Shut in ninety nine with Kubrick's last film. So very impressive. Mm-hmm. Jack Nicholson. Yeah. Was also a big deal, obviously. Chinatown in seventy four is like his big first first big role. one flew over the cuckoo's nest in seventy five, The Shining in eighty. Postman always rings twice in eighty one, Reds in eighty one. Terms of Endearment in eighty three. The Witches of Eastwick in eighty seven. I've never seen that and I think I need to. I've heard it's good. I think Cheryl's Cher's in that, right? I know. Eighty nine, Batman, he plays the Joker. and then a couple other ones, and then this in ninety two. So he was a big deal. Everyone in this movie is good. Yes. Everyone. Down to the little bit parts. You're like, there's There's Noah Wiley. Noah Wiley! There's Cuba Gooding Jr., there's Christopher Guest playing a dramatic role. Because I never realized that that was Christopher Guest. No. I rem I was dying to pull up my doctor D B and I'm like, wait, yeah. What? When is he in this? I know I was I was waiting for him to show up as like, he's Corpy like funnier. Yeah. He was like, Ew, you're yucky. But he did so good. and then Demi has a little is not quite as well known. she did Moonlighting, the T V show. Bruce Willis. She's a woman in elevator. isn't that funny? Like she's just a random extra. she's so cute. She does Ghost in nineteen ninety. That's her big breakout role. Nothing but Trouble in ninety one, The Butcher's Wife in ninety one, and then this A Few Good Men in ninety two. And then Indecent Proposal in nineteen ninety three, which is like a big Big Robert Redford. She was in some 80s movies too, though. I feel like she was in like the Brat Pack, wasn't she? Yeah, I feel like that's Jane Almost Fire. Yeah. Maybe I didn't know. But I doubt that's like an acclaimed movie that people so and then obviously Rob Reiner talking about like the hits. This is his his is crazy. So he does Spinal Tap in nineteen eighty four, The Sure Thing in nineteen eighty five. Didn't you love that movie? I don't even remember that. Who's it's Princess Vespa and And Cusack. Cute. Road tripping across the country together. Okay and like they hate each other at first. She's like a doorkeeper. And he's into lovers? Okay. Like rivals. And he's going to the sure thing. Yeah, this like I think it's like Natasha Henstridge or something. He's going across the country to For her. Yeah. But then yeah. cute. They have to like share a whole jail room and there's like one bed. It's classic, classic, good, good stuff happening. Stand by me in 1986, The Princess Bride in 1987, when Harry Met Sally in 1989, Misery in 1990, and then A Few Good Men in 92. And then he does North. Remember North? I do. With little baby Elijah. I was gonna say, isn't Elisha wouldn't that? And Elaine. Bruce Willis is in there. I don't know. Why am I thinking Elaine and George are in there as his parents? maybe they are. Look it up. Look it up. Well, 'cause they I could see that 'cause Rob Reiner is a producer of Seinfeld. So that would make sense. And then he does the American President in nineteen ninety five, which is also Aaron Sorkin who wrote the screenplay for this. So they teamed up again. They did. did you find it Julie Louis Dreyfus is in it? and James Alexand! Because they're like they're like Jason Alexand. Jason spouses. how they're like his parents. You remembered that. Good job, sis. That's so funny. What a funny movie. Because they're funny. I loved that movie because I loved Elijah. yeah. He's cute. He was so cute. And he was in like Forever Young with Mel Gibson. Giant blue eyes. I gotcha. North. Dan Ackroyd's in that too. Back to the Future. And Kathy Bates. Lonnie, he's the kid. And Scarlett Johansson? She's a North. Like legitimately a baby. That's crazy. That is crazy. John Lovitz, Reba McIntyre. There's lots of people in this movie. Dang. Yeah. John Ritter? It's Rob Reiner. He kinda Yeah, that's true. It does. Okay, do you guys remember the first time you saw this movie? No. I feel like this is a terrible question that we should not ask ourselves anymore. Sometimes I do remember. Sometimes I do and like vividly like hook watching it in the theater. The only thing I remember about this Don't remember anything, Lens, sorry. Is that I cut out a picture of Tom Cruise from the newspaper in his little uniform cuteness and like put it in my journal. No way. Yeah. Because I was obsessed with Tom. Yes. That's so cute. I know. Well Remember when they would advertise movies in the binder? That's how you had to find Yeah. So different. That's crazy. Yeah. I was like, was I like ten? Yeah. Yeah. Take it easy. That's so good. It makes sense. I guess. It does. It's really good. I feel like this was just like a TBS TNT movie. But you always watched it. But like I remember like it being obviously in the newspaper. Yeah, probably for show times stuff. Yes. But like I don't think we saw them in the theater. Not in the theater. And I feel like it was really funny. I I told Brody we were covering this and he was like, you're gonna love this j the joke about the BJ. And I was like What? And he's like, Yeah, I knew you hadn't seen it other than T D and T. I was like, Well, yeah, probably. Or if we did, it went over my head and I didn't know what they were talking about. But I don't feel like we did. I feel like we always watched it on TV. Yeah. Like maybe we watched it at the cabin. I was gonna say in the cabin we could have put it on that's true. Although I feel like back then we wouldn't have sat through that movie. Yeah. Like you know what I mean? Yeah. Like I did not remember the first part at all. I was like, I don't remember this. No, I it makes you feel icky. Well and if you watch it on TNT you always miss the beginning. Yeah. Yeah. So like it's like me with a leak of their own. I was like, what is I forgot about the beginning of this movie. Okay. How did it change the industry? It kind of revitalizes the courtroom drama. Mm-hmm. And and Aaron Sorkin's like a very much a unique voice as far as screenplays go. And like I think he has some copycats now. So yeah. Okay. It's walk and talk. Yeah. The walk and talk. Who's in the hospital for carrying the whole thing on their back place? I couldn't pick just one. I said the whole gang. Yeah. I just feel like you You have to have each other to make this work. And they all are just top notch. Mm-hmm. I s well, I wrote Tim Cruz, but Tim Cruz. Tim Cruz. Yeah. And Jack Nicholson. Yeah. Just I mean, yeah. And Nicholson's not in it a ton, obviously. But like But you need his presence. And his performance is well, them playing off each other's like been parodied so much. And just Jack Nicholson is so like exudes so much that you don't need very much, I guess. Like I remember someone saying like Darth Vader only appears in like fifteen minutes of the entire first three movies, which is crazy. Yeah. But it's kind of like that, like, you don't need a lot of him. He just he's like so terrifying. It's more like you don't want to see the whole shark. Yeah. And like Tom Cruise is such a like charisma bomb. That it's like he really does carry this movie because it is a dialogue heavy movie. It's kind of boring military speak dialogue. Yep. But he's so co charismatic that you're like locked inched. Yeah. And that's like his character too. Yeah. Yeah. He's playing himself ish. Yeah. And he's funny. He's so funny in this. Him and Kevin Pollock. Yeah. He's fantastic. Yeah. It's a great little duo. I do too. I think he's pivotal. And he's the perfect like Very sarcastic, very kind of not boring, but compared to like Tom Cruise, he's like he's dry. He's the calm, yeah steady to the crazy especially like the three. They need all three. Yes. Yeah. Three kinds of heat. Three kinds of heat. Yeah. Yeah. That's why it's like you I couldn't pick one. I picked Aaron Sorkin who wrote the screenplay. Just 'cause I knew you guys were gonna cover the other two. Yeah. But like it is so good. It's based on a play he wrote. So you can kinda tell it's very like lots of d monologuing, lots of dialogue, but it's so good. Everyone does such a good job. Like I love a good speech. yeah. And he I saw a behind the scenes and he like wrote he was working as like a bartender and he wrote it Like the play on like napkins and he like it's crazy. Would take him home and yeah just do his little play. It's crazy. It is crazy. 'Cause he's like really good. And like you I c I don't even know how. Yeah. No. So much room in their heads to have creative. Yeah. Okay, so who was your secret MVP scene stealer then, nice? I really liked Sam. Kevin Pollock just He's always good. He's one of those actors that like pops up and is just like, yeah, you made this better. Yeah. Like a character actor. Mm-hmm. And he's kind of a relief, but he's not. Like he's comic relief. Yeah. Mm-hmm. But like not, you know. Mm-hmm. Like he is, but he's not overt. Yeah. Like he has like probably the best like comedic timing of the whole game. So it works. But I just I don't know. Really liked him. Like They each kind of have their little speech moments. Like Tom Cruise gets a couple. Jack Nicholson gets a couple but his really good one. Demi gets one. Mm-hmm. And like even Kevin Paula gets one. He's like, 'cause they beat up a kid. Like I love that. And he kinda speaks for the audience. 'Cause I'm kinda like on his side. Totally. But Yeah. And that's kinda like the point of the whole movie. Like the end. Yeah. Yes. The kid's like, Well, why didn't I Russ had never seen this before. I know. I was crazy. Did he like it? He was like, it's fine. I was like, you liked it. He did. I was watching it and I was like, this is such a gift. Like, this is so cool. We have like Jack Nicholson in his peak as the antagonist. And you have Tom Cruise in his peak as the like hero. Mm-hmm. Flawed hero. Like it's so good. It's really a good movie. And they're just like going at it. Yeah. With like Rob Reiner directing behind the movie. So good stuff, because I'm like Yeah, feel like there has to be because those are big personalities out there. They are, but like they're not. Yeah. Jack Nuggle's in like we'll get there. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. We'll get there. Yeah. Lon, who did you have? I said Damine Moore's voice. she got that. Slinty. Yes. I'm like, my gosh, your voice. And then I haven't pulled. Yeah. And Harold Dawson. I don't know his real name. Harold. Yeah. He's good. You guys, he had never acted a day in his life. Is he an actual Marine? Like did they get him? No, okay. He worked with Rob Reiner like on set, like as a like a PA or something. Something, yeah. Wow. And they were l searching and searching for someone. And they needed this big presence, this guy. And so he's like, Have you ever thought about acting? He's like, No. So we had him like do it anyway. He's so good. He's so good. That's why I was like I was like, I know. I remember like and the the other one is an actor, like he was already acting and stuff, but that's so great. So good. Yeah. It's like he's I love him. And he's going to tow toe-to-toe with like Tom Cruise. Yeah. Good for him. Yeah. I know. I think he like had so much respect for Rob Reiner. That's just kind of like what it seemed like in his interviews. He's like, I just wanted to like do the best I could for him to get from this. And so He nailed it. He really did. Yeah. Anyway. Wow. Okay. And he yeah, I he's such a good character too. Because like he hates Tom Cruise. Mm-hmm. He's kind of naive. Not kind of. He's naive. Well, it's that like cult mentality. Yeah. Like you're gonna end up in jail for the rest of your life. But yeah. But also we see his little sweet sides too. Well and like his integrity to be like, well, if that's the case then then Yeah that's the When like I and things I didn't notice as a kid, like in the dialogue he sneaks that one guy food. I didn't notice that either. And I was like, Harold. Well, and like he would have stuck up for him or wouldn't have done the code red, in my opinion, if he hadn't got that negative review. Yeah, yeah, that was like the whole So it's like crux of it all. He was and that's why he realizes at the end, like Yeah We didn't still do what we were supposed to do. Yeah. Yeah. No, those are good. I had to me, 'cause she really holds her own. Like can you imagine with like Tom Cruise and Jen Drippelson. Like And she wasn't like a big, big she wasn't yet. Like she only had a couple things on her resume that were like bigger hits. So Rob Reiner talks about her being like he she ought it she wanted it really bad and like worked really hard to get that. Nice. I know. She does awesome. She does. And and like she doesn't overdo it 'cause Yeah. That character I don't think is written particularly well. Yeah. It's very like the classic, like the girl has to be the the voice of reason and the the the right the babysitter, which is probably true for the military. A hundred percent. But yeah. I think she does a really good job. Mm-hmm. Cause like her character's annoying, but I think she does a good job of like mitigating how annoying she is. Mm-hmm. Okay. And then I just had the supporting cast is incredible. Mm-hmm. Like you've got Kiefer Kiefer Sutherland, who is so dislikable. You hear you're so racist. He's so racist. He's so very good. He's but like he's so accurate. They talk about his character too, this Aaron Sorkin, excuse me. And how he like had this twisted relationship with God and like he's like Kiefer just like was that guy, you know? Yeah. He was like so good. Fully embodied it. Yeah. When they're in the room, the kid's room, and they're like, Do you think he was murdered? And he was like, I think he betrayed his co his unit and he had no what was the word? And that's and God was watching. Yeah. Like he deserved to die. Yeah. Exactly. Like who God played this out. twisted. Like gross. you're the worst kind of familiar. Yeah. yeah. Yeah. and then I just said, baby Noah Wiley and baby cuba cuba gooding junior are in there. I know, I forgot that they were in it. No, I did too. Like it happens every time I watch. I'm like, yeah. yeah. Yeah. And then Christopher Guest. I'm like, ooh, he's he's pretty like icky too. He's so the skeezy doctor. And Kevin Bacon. And Kevin Bacon. Love Kevin Bacon in He walks I know the whole time. I was like, Kevin Bacon and his little He does hilarious high top his crew cut. Points. Yeah. Points. And he does such a good job too. I love Kevin Bacon and like they he and Tom Cruise do such a good job of like being buddies, but also rivals. Yeah. Like it's so good. They play it really well. Yeah. And like the the military, like Marines versus the Navy were you know, like it's so interesting. I feel like the whole military needs to like I would just do like a a case study on that. Of like, ooh this is crazy. Anyway. Okay, who gets their peak performance? Best of their career, Lace. I didn't put anything because I'm just too scared to say. Well, and they're all really big deals that are impressive resumes. But it could be your favorite. For me, Jack Nicholas Nicholson. Yep. I always get the Jack Nicholas is the golfer. I yeah. He doesn't remember which one goes with which. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, that was like super terrifying for me. But I do love him in As Good As It Gets as well. Yeah. But I like probably feel like this what he does in this movie is so impressive. Yeah. It's like so little terrifying. He's terrifying. And it's like perfectly encapsulates like the problems and you're like, he's the perfect guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he was mine too. Yeah. And I'm like, I'm sure he has better ones that I just haven't seen his movies. But yeah, this for me, for him. Yeah. It's like, yeah. You do this so well. I could say you could make the case for both Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson. Because like Tom Cruise is like so funny in this. I haven't seen Magnolia. I haven't seen Eyes Wide Shot. Like I haven't seen a lot of his like more prestige stuff, so I probably shouldn't. But it's one of my favorite dramatic roles of him. Okay. Far and away still. Far and away. You love Top Gun. Like he just has a lot of lovable movies. He does. Yes. Okay. If you had to replace anyone, who would you sub in? Or if you were doing a modern remake? Did you guys have some good ones? Lonnie's got a face like she didn't have face. Okay. So I thought of Zach Efron as like the Tom Cruise. interesting. Like currently? Yeah. Yeah. Or when he was like Tom Cruise's age. Yeah. I think he is. Maybe I just always picture him as being young because of Yeah. I feel like he's younger. Yeah. Yeah. So like when he's like they could have redone it when he like Tom Cruise's age. And he could be in the military. He's a Yes. I feel like he would have been Anyway. Yeah. And then Miles Teller. So they could have done that as well. Mm-hmm. And for the girl, Jody Foster back in the day to me. She would have been good. Yeah, she would have. I feel like she would have totally Had like that same vibe. Yeah. And then Emma Stone for more modern. And then for Jack Nicholson, which is really hard to replace, but I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman could have done it. he would have been so good. So it's going to be a terrifying bad guy. His bad guy in the Mission Impossible that he's in is still like the only time I've been like actually scared in a movie theater. Like, my gosh. Yeah. Don't look at him. Like he was so scary. Yeah. That's good. Nice. That's good. I love that. And then I had Jonah Hill as like the replacement for Sam, but I kinda hate Jonah Hill. I do too. And anytime he like opens his mouth in an interview, I'm like, I don't like you even more. Like, what did he say recently? he's like talking about how he could jujutsu and he could beat up. Cajala, cajala people. It was on their podcast. It was on Smartless. Smartless podcast. Talking about how he could beat them all up. Yeah. It's like it's like you're just like funny. Has some issues with like growing up being like self esteem known as the fat guy. Yeah. And has like a lot of anger about that that he needs to work through. He does. Yeah. And I get it. Like I'm sure it was hard. That would mess with anyone's head. But also like don't be violent about it. Yeah. Anyway crazy. But my Philosoph was good then. It was really good. I can never think of him. I said back in the day I thought Denzel would be really good as like the Tom Cruise. Yeah. Or he could be the Jack Nicholson when he's older. Yes. And he's so good. Like can really screw a scary. Yes. I don't know which one is in Global. Did you see the new Gladiator? No with Paul Mescal. He's kind of a he's kind of a antihero bad guy. And he's really scary. Yeah. He's really good. He's always good. He can totally do that. and then I had like a Val Kilmer in the Tom Cruise I could see doing good. Yeah. And then I could see like a Jessica Chastain or Scarlett Johansson in the Demi role. yeah for SharePoint. I think it'd be fun now, if they did it now, to have Leo in the Jack Nicholson. yeah. Like I love when he's a bad guy. And he's it would complete his turning into Jack Nicholson. Yes. Cause he is. Because he is. Yes. Turn into the dark. and then you could do like, I don't know, Glenn Powell kind of reminds me of like a Tom Cruisey type. But I don't know if he has the shops. Ryan Gosling could maybe do it. Ryan could. This was where I went kinda ham, but I love it. Like now Having like a Julia Roberts in the Jack Nicholson role, like a woman as like the big scary bad would be really fun. or like a Meryl Streep. So just that like could really eat chew up. Mm-hmm. It'd be really fun. Kathy Bates. Yeah. and then like Jesse Clemens as like Kiefer Sutherland's role. yeah. I like him as a bad guy. Yeah. He's so good as a bad guy. Did you guys ever see Civil War? Mm mm. He is only in it for like one scene. His wife's in it, Chris Chris Kirsten Dunst. And he like they had someone else cast for the role and they like couldn't do it at the very last minute. So he just like stepped in and did it. And he is so good. Wait, it's called Silk Score. Yeah. It's like America's in a civil war and like Ron Swanson's the president that like won't leave and love him. It's good. It's kind of weird, but it like it's one of the movies that I still kinda think about after having seen it. It kinda feels relevant. Yeah. let's see. And then like for Dawson and Downey, like I think the guys that are them are good. But I feel like if there's a weak spot, it's probably Downey. Like I know he's kind of a dum dumb farm boy and that's kind of the character, but it feels kind of I don't know. Like if you put like a really good dri like a good actor in there, like an atom driver that kind of like can tug at your heartstrings and you're like don't know if they were good or bad. Like you could see him going either way. Like you did this out of malice or you did this. I kind of wish we'll get there in the rewrite, but I kind of wish they had made it more unknown to the audience. Right. So we were yes, in position of the new everything they did this. Yeah. Like yeah. So yeah. A little more ambiguity would have been Yeah. I think it would have been a more interesting movie that way. Then instead of making them like sweet little cutie pies. Yeah. Or like we aren't sure. Yeah. And you ha Tom Cruise have to convince us as much as you have to convince the jury. Yeah. Yeah. So. I like that one. Who is your favorite character, Lice? I I said Kevin Bacon. she likes Jack. Couldn't handle his outfits. no. Tiny little waist. He had like the high waist every time. Duck the girls out. Well he's Very militant. Yeah. But he also had his like swagger. He did. And his like I can dance and move. But I just every time he was on, I like, yeah. Yeah. Nice. Who was your slon? I said Joe. I know you hate her. I don't hate her. I don't hate her character. I just wish it was written a little better. I did hate how they kept like making her be stupid. I was like, why does she be dumb? Yeah. But Because I love her like this is what's right, like she knows what's right and like that kind of character of like her morals. Yes. Yeah. And they could have had it more like everyone's treating her like a dumb girl, but yeah, like they had this opportunity to be like, No, she's really smart and good and they're like just really no she is this dumb. Yeah. Which yeah, that was kind of And like she doesn't she does it like twice. Yeah. She doesn't learn from the first time. Like the first time in court when she messes up and he's like, She messed up. Yeah. So now they live it. Yeah. And then like she did it again. Yeah. And he throws it in her face that she's dumb. Like Yeah. Yeah. So bad. But we still love Damian. She's so bad. I think she's and she does it. She's my favorite character. She's definitely like the character that you are rooting for the most. But I also like Sam's character. Yeah. He's kind of the opposite of her. But like Yeah. I had Sam. Because I've I I aligned most with like Sam's view of everything. Yeah. Like they just beat up on a kid because he r couldn't run very fast. But that's not really like the boys' fault. It's the military. That's the like black and white fault, you know. Yeah. The not the nuance of like they didn't want to. Yeah. When you And they can't say no. Get into that. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah. It's like and he's like, Well, that didn't work at Nuremberg. That didn't work. That's never worked. Just following orders doesn't work. So Yeah. That's the point. Who is your actual worst, Lace? I said patriarchy. And the military just how bad it is. Even on the good guys side. Yeah. Yeah. Like Tom Cruise says things to her that I'm like Yes. Yeah. I'm actually aroused. Yes. I was so mad at that. No. Yeah. Yeah. So I I feel like the just the overall of the whole movie, I was like, This is so bad. It was no wonder our country's innerware at. And just hierarchy, like I'm better than you 'cause I have more colours on my and I'm gonna make sure you know it and like treat you terribly and awkwardly and make you put your little nose in the dirt. But then if you think about how men can be when they're all together, it's like you do need that like very strict, very like no codes and rules. Yeah. So it's it's a fascinating like case study of like what do you guys do? Because actual true leaders like good leaders are like in it with their people. Yes. They're making them make the decisions and you know what I mean? Yes. And like leading them to be good people themselves. Mm-hmm. So I feel like the patriarchy of our like our nation just has like yeah taught men to like you just do what you're told. Anyway, and and then instead of teaching them to be good men on their own. I don't know. And like why are we having armies of anyway, it's just I hate. Yeah. Yeah. Men being in charge. But like it's bad for them too. It's totally what we're saying. Like it takes away that agency that he that Dawson should have had of like protecting him, which he wanted. Yes. But in order to excel in this patriarchy, he had he had to be a yes man like Kiefer Sutherland was the yes man. Yeah. And that's terrible. Martinson was the like one that was trying to break From that. Kills himself because he But he couldn't do it either 'cause he Yeah, he's like, I will betray all this that I've been taught. Yeah. I mean He literally killed himself. Not proud of what I've done and not proud of what I'm doing. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. It's just bad. Bad for men. Yes. And women, obviously, but Yes. Yeah. The weird like death glory thing that they're fed for so long. Mm-hmm. Is sad. Anyway, that was my worst. Who was yours, Lon? I said Jessup. yeah. Colonel Jessup. He is the worst. And whatever Kiefer's character kind of real dark. He does CD. I love though the part where at the beginning when Jack Nicholson is talking to Markinson after Kiefer leaves the room, he's like talks about he's pretty much a weasel too. Yeah. That's really good. Yeah, just he agrees with me on how we should do things and blah blah blah. Because you honestly you don't respect people that just are yes men. That's the that's the problem. It's like this is what you have to do for me to respect you, but I you don't respect anyone that's like that. Yeah. It it's that's what I mean. Like it's a whole psychological total case study. Like we need to study this. It doesn't allow for the best outcomes if you just have people saying to whatever the at the top of the pyramid says. Yeah. So Yeah. And more than just the military, yes. In all yes. In all circumstances. Yes. Okay. I had Kendrick. And then I also had like Dawson and Downey, because they're kind of dumb. Like We are totally dumb. When he's tr when he gets that plea deal of like two years or six he'll be out in six months. Like they should take it. It's this movie's it was funny talking to Brody. He's like it's it's a really good movie. But I have to turn my lawyer brain off to enjoy it. Yeah. Yeah. But it's also the like go after the Goliath of the problems. Yeah. Which is Jessup. Yes. And that. Yes. You love And because he's they do it. And he's at the very top. Yeah. And saying like the whole structure's bad. Like rooting that underbelly out. Yes. And changing but also like giving it its like We love you guys for what you do too. Like Joe's whole thing of like 'cause they stand on the wall. Yeah. It's just like it's a pretty well written, nuanced screenplay, f especially for the time. Yeah. who has the best arc? Lace? know. I don't put anything. I said cafe on. Yeah. Me too. Cause at first he's very he hasn't seen the inside of a courtroom. Mm-hmm. And he's kind of Afraid of his dad's ghost and that whole thing. Yeah. And I didn't get as a kid the whole part of him, like where he's like, Why did they hire me? This guy that always goes for the plea deal. Yeah. And like would rather not be in court. Mm-hmm. Right. I didn't catch that as a kid. There's like so many things that I was like, this makes more sense. And like, he could get in so much trouble just for calling this guy to the stand. Like things like that that I like, this is Which is like this way, stupid about the military. Like no no too. No one's above course. Yeah. Mm-hmm. It's dumb and I hope it doesn't still exist, but I'm sure it does. yeah. Well, and just to have their own legal system is stupid. The jag or whatever. Yeah. Like Yeah. Well, this doesn't make sense. I know. And it puts people like Demi's character in the whatever her role. Necessary. Yes. Yeah. Like Are we sure? Yeah. It's just interesting. D the the idea that you will be in trouble if you question authority of a high ranking officer is crazy. It is. Or like going 'cause like the reason why what's his face was in grave danger is because he went above people's heads. And it's like, well if I went here they would have given me a code red. Yeah. So like there's no winning you How does he I there's no real HR person. Yeah. And so he kind of had to Yeah. Totally. Is there his men a real HR person? No, there's not. It's a lawyer. No. Yeah. No. But you know what I mean. Yeah. It's That's why like we're a litigious country, because literally like you have to sue. Mm-hmm. Anyway. Okay. Yeah, I had Tom 'cause he grows up and does a real case and makes his daddy proud. Mm-hmm. And himself proud. And himself proud. And I loved again with Sam, he I guess he has a couple speeches, but when he's talking to Tom Cruise and he's like, And if I had the choice between your dad and you, I'd pick you any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Like it's so good. Especially 'cause he's like, Did you know I wrote a paper about your dad in law school? And that's a great speech. So good. Mm-hmm. He's so good. He's just like the steady hand that's like comforting. Yep. okay. Here come the Perry sweats. Is this based on anything? Yes, he was Aaron Sorkin famously wrote the play after a phone call with his sister, who was a judge. she had signed up for a s a three year stint with the US Navy judge. advocate General Corps and she said she was going to Guantanamo Bay to defend a group of Marines who had nearly killed a fellow Marine in a hazing ordered by a superior officer. wow. That's like kind of a true story. Yeah. Yeah. many of the facts of the case are directly included in the play and the film. Wow. Which led to a lawsuit against Castle Rock by the real life Marines who Interesting. Were indicted and stuff. So yeah. Kind of messy. Mm-hmm. But fascinating. okay, who what was your most iconic scene, Nice? I just feel like the you can't handle the truth moment is just that whole last the most iconic when Jessup is on the stand is so good. Mm-hmm. It's so good. I had one other be even though that is the scene I when they're eating lunch in Cuba. yeah. It's very like Ooh, it's such a whip out, measure Yes. And like I think it gets Tom more engaged in the yeah case. And they like talk she brings it up later, which I didn't catch as a kid. Mm-hmm. But like you asked him for it 'cause you you wanted to like to see how he would react. Yeah, like they foreshadow him giving up, giving in and saying the thing. Yeah. In that he will. Yeah. Mm-hmm. His ego gets in his sway. And then Tom Cruise impersonating Jack Nicks. yeah. Yes. I have that in my funniest moments. I had both of those and then I had I I always loved the closet scene. So he like fizzes it out. Totally. 'Cause like that the movie's so good in that I don't I remember the first time I like, I don't get it. What has he figured out? I don't get it. And then and then you get the courtroom reveal. It's so good. Yeah. They talked about that in the thing I watched. Mm-hmm. And I don't know how it is in the play, but he's like there's dialogue of him talking about it what he's seen and like, all his shirts. Anyway, and he says, But Rob Reiner's brilliant that you just he just has to look at it and you know exactly what is going on. And like the foreshadow like we saw before. We saw the the clothes. The clothes. Yeah. So it is so good. Brilliant. And then I have the part where Dawson and Kathy are in the courtroom at the end and he's like, You don't have to have a badge on your arm to have honor. Yeah. And then he's like, salute them. There's an officer on deck. Like it's so good. That's really sweet. Having them come full circle with their enemies to bros. Yeah. Is good. I love that. And then I like when Tom chases her in the rain. And has to apologize because he was so mean. Why is he driving? Yeah, he should not be driving. I was like Sam was in there too. Sam. Yeah. That's his lawyer. Yes. This is not let him drive. Not let him drive. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Did any scene make you tear up? Nice. I didn't really get teared up. There were a couple for me. When he salutes him at the end. The end. And the music's swelling. It is. And then when little Downy's on the stand and he's like, Harold And you just you're just like this stuff somehow. Like the sad little baby that doesn't really get what's going on. Is so dumb. He does a good job. The cult like r of the army really gets in his brain that like he just needs someone to tell him what to do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Those critical thinking skills. Yeah. Answer his question. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. let's see. I had when Downey is kind of crying at the end, he's like, What did we do wrong? We did nothing wrong. And he's like, We were supposed to fight for people who couldn't fight for themselves. Yeah. We were supposed to fight for Willie. I can't believe that was his first acting job. That's so cool. Isn't it insane? Yes. Okay. What scene made you want to throw something at the screen? There's so many plays. This is a funny one, but watching Tom Cruise trying to hit the ball was driving me crazy. When Joe was talking to him at the beginning, like such a ding dong to me. He he looked unskilled for sure. Yes. I was like, stop. Just stop trying to hit the cause you could tell like where the ball went. He would like the ball, it was like f pop fly or like right to the ground. I don't know. It just That would be a really hard fill scene to find totally. 'Cause he's having to act and hit a ball and I'm like that would be really hard. W and it looked bad like he was bad at it. But anyway, it was just funny. But it's like good for his character. Like his perfect character development. Yeah. She's like your c clients have been in a sitting in a prison cell for the last hour. I'm wondering why their lawyers hitting a ball like this. Yes. He just doesn't care. It's a great scene. I just was like, Ew, Tom Cruise, you're supposed to be more athletically inclined. That's funny. And then any of the misogynistic interrogatory things they would say to Joe Joe was terrible. Yeah. I don't remember this. Yeah. I don't either. Well, the BJ joke is not in the TNT. I'm sure not. So yeah. I guess comment discussion. Whatever we we wanna call. Comment, yeah. Ooh. Yeah. Juan, did you have one? I had when he talks down to her about the blowjobs. Yeah. He's like, You're the luckiest man ali I just it it just clicked for me. She outranks you. Such a dick. Totally. Just when he's like, You have to ask nicely. I mean it's such a pivotal. But you're just like heek back. You're so gross. Yeah. But it does set up. Yeah. Yeah. But it is like health. Yeah. Yeah. They hate each other. Yeah. Ugh. Any other ones? Just the fact that they do it to him. Do what to him. The code red. I hate that whole scene. I'm like, my gosh. I feel so claustrophobic. Me too. Yeah. It's just so terrible. I really didn't like it. I was like, I don't want to see that. I think it's such a more interesting movie if you don't show it and you just start with Joe saying, like, here's your clients. Yeah. And we have to like we don't see Jack Nicholson order it. We don't see any of it. And we have to figure it out with Yeah. He needs to prove it to us. You know what I mean? I had when Tom Cruise mocks Joe to her face and is like But maybe Should we or should we not follow the advice of the galactically stupid like he's he's right. Mm-hmm. He's completely right, but it's so mean. It is. The part where Joe is objecting and then she strenuously objects. I had to like fast forward it. I was like I I can't She keeps going. She keeps so hard to watch. Because they're dying to be Shut up and sit down. Yes. This is not helping us at it again, it makes us look scared of the doctor. And yeah, and he's like, You had the judge calling him an expert for crying out loud. Yeah. Like And that's the difference between trial law and the papers. Well, and like she outranks them. Like, why is she the dum dumb? I know. Because she's not a trial lawyer. I but but neither is he, apparently. I know. You know what I'm saying? Like, I just didn't understand why they made herself stupid. I know. This is what I mean. There's like no like I don't I like her. I don't like the way she's written. Yeah. Always don't always like the way she's written. 'Cause they did her dirty. Like, what are we doing? Why are she why? Yeah. And then the part where Jack Nicholson mocks them all in their their dress whites. yeah. It's funny. But it's it's has not aged great. But I mean it's yeah, he's the bad guy, so it works. But yeah. Did you have one for what scene film feels like a warm hug? I just said the music because it reminded me of our like growing up and watching that. It's like a total nineties soundtrack with like did it totally. Yes. It just was when they walk the Sam's little baby. yeah. I like that pick up which is so cute. It's so pretty. The leaves and the darling DC. Yeah, I was all the DC stuff made me very nostalgic for T C. what was the best plot line, Lice? I just thought the plot of the movie was good. Like having to have See and maybe like knowing that they did it and that he had the code red and then having to prove that is good because it's like frustrating 'cause like you do know. Yeah, maybe. Yeah. I don't know. I just said I like I'd like to see both. I love the like the clothes not being packed as like a something so insignificant and mundane as that being a huge thing. Mm-hmm. and like you get the good big courtroom reveal. 'Cause you're kind of like Kevin Bacon of like where is he going with this? I don't know. and then the foreshadowing in Cuba that he does kind of wanna Put him in his place and tell him what he does. Cause he's like, Yeah, I have ordered code red. Or he's like, if they go on here without my knowledge, so be it. Or something. Like he's apathetic to it. Yeah. And like Yeah. He knows what works. Yeah. Like how dare you question how I run things. Yes. I eat breakfast 400 years away. I loved how Sam had to like keep telling him things that Like the time. Like that's four PM. Like he just made it. Because he was talking to us. Yeah. I mean that too. But like it also showed like how he's adopted. How little he cares about military stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Like it it's we wouldn't necessarily feel bad about not disobeying an order or whatever. Right. Like it doesn't mean much more here in the D C Navy Yard. Yeah. But in the Marines in Guantanamo. Mm hmm. Yeah. Okay. Funniest moments, quotable lines. Who wants to go first? I can go. Okay, go for it. When they're taking the night off and Tom says to Joe, well, whatever his name is. Like, go do whatever it is you do when you're not with us. Anything. Yeah. But yeah, she loves the her job so much that And then she comes back. Can they have a little date? I know. I know. I wish they didn't do any of that too. I like how much they did. Yeah. Yeah. I'm like good. At least they didn't do more. Yeah. They didn't do more. It's not the movie for it. Yeah. That's fine. Russ was like, did they sleep together? I didn't answer. It's like, yeah, just wait and see. I also like when he says a clearance code. I don't have a clearance code. yeah. Do you have a clearance code? Yeah. and then when he's I think he's drunk and he's like That was an important piece of information. Yeah. The fact that he wasn't yeah. Yeah. He wasn't in the room. Yeah. Yeah. They were so that was dumb of them. Yeah. They were both in there. Well, that's what I mean by like they are kind of the worst because they aren't making his life easier. They're like, Well, you didn't ask. It's like you guys are gonna end up in jail. Yeah. This is this is who's gonna save you. And like Making his life harder than your only friends' friend. Yes. Like you literally have to tell him everything. Yes. Yeah. I loved when Sam said, I'd choose you any day of the weekend twice on Sunday. Mm-hmm. and then Tom Cruise says, Sit down, both of you. And they were both already sitting. Yeah. I think it's so funny. It is. It's good. and then when he mocks Joe. No. Jack Joseph. Yes. He eats breakfast. Three hundred yards from the Cuban defensive or whatever he says. Yeah. I can't do it all. 400 Cubans trained to kill me. Yeah. And then when they're in the courtroom, he's like, I'm sure I've earned it. He says it back to a judge. The judge is really good too. I do love the judge. I love that guy. Yeah. He does a really good job. He does. Because it's like that's Jack and Jack Nicholson. But he's like, nah. I'm not having that here. Yeah. And when he says crystal. Like when there's like is that clear? Crystal. Yeah. Anyway, that's mine. Did you have them? Yes. I love when Demi Moore goes at the very beginning and they're like, please leave the room so we can talk about you both. Yeah. I do think it's fun movie. I was like, this sh movie is way funnier than I remember it being. Yeah. Anyway. It's that like adult humor that you don't really don't pick up on. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that was fun. Or you're not really listening. Yeah. I know you don't have a good excuse, so I won't make you come up with a bad one. Yeah. Yeah. So funny. And it's so good. It's that good character development. We know who he is. Without exposition. Yep. Like he's a kind of a ding dong. not a fan of boats. It's like nobody likes her. Yeah. You're in the navy for crying out loud. It's like nobody likes her much. Which I also hate that though. Like when it's like got it, sir. Like Noah. Noah Wiley. Noah Wiley. And when he's like they're on their like little date and she's like, Or maybe it was after and he he's talking about like You like me or whatever he's saying to her. I like didn't understand. But she's like, I was just gonna tell you to wear matching socks. he does his whole speech in yours. She's like, listen. It's like the night before he's like totally just talks over her. Yeah. She's like, I just continue to wear matching socks. Like, good for her. Good advice. Yep. That was so good. Because I like the tension. I like I do too. And they have good chemistry. They do. But I like that. That's where they left That's where they left it. Because it would have been gross. Yeah. We didn't need it. It doesn't do anything for the movie. Yeah. your Aunt Jenny. I was expecting someone older. But so was I So was I. So for Aunt Jenny. Yes. Cause he's totally expecting her to be like a dumb. Old moron Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then she goes or she's like, Are you drunk? He's like, Pretty much, yeah. Yeah. Pretty much, pretty much. Yeah, that's funny. I love I love when I already did it, but when they ask he for Sutherland to leave the room and he's like I pretty much think he's a weasel myself. Like he has him, but he uses him. Ugh. Wendy is talking to Tom Curz at the beginning and he's like, normally it takes someone hours to learn I'm not qualified for their defense and she's like That's not funny. He's like, come on, that was damn funny or whatever. That it's a good little play on words or whatever. I d it's not funny, but I l I love that you don't need a patch to wear a patch on your arm to have honor. So good. it doesn't matter what I believe, it only matters what I can prove. So don't tell me what I know. I know the law. It's just really good because it's true. Like He it doesn't really And I think that's the point too. Like we know that they're what they're saying is correct. Yeah. But he has to prove it. I'm sorry. I keep forgetting. You weren't there the day they taught law at law school. So funny. Yeah. when he's like, so this is what a courtroom looks like. It's good. It's just funny. the whole Jack Nicholson thing. Yeah. We live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? He's so mean. I can't believe he even remembers his name. I know. I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. Is Sam Weinberg? Sorry. Yeah. Okay. Just making sure. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. Like it's just so good, the whole thing. My e my existence while grotesque and incomprehensible to you saves lives. S nicely. It's so good. It is so good. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, and loyalty. We use the like it's like this could be so bad from a bad actor, but the entire monologue you're locked in because Jack Nicholson's so good. Yes. He like uses his teeth. His teeth and his eyes. He's looking around, like he's keeping it dynamic. He's not just looking at Tom Curse and like that part of that might be direction. That might just be him. I don't know. But he's incredible. It's incredible. let's see. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. Like it's such a good script. Mm-hmm. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide. And then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to. Like it's so good. It's so good because he's the one talking. Like Tom Cruise isn't even like winding him up at that point. He's just like going. Yeah. And he but Tom Cruise knew he And then he pushes the button just enough to get him over the edge. Have you guys seen the reel of the dog? They put the lines of like someone who rises and or sleeps with the blanket on the and it's like a dog. I'd just rather you say thank you and went on your way. Yeah. The dog. Like a ding dong dog. Yeah. That's good. Anyway. I love when he gets when he's being arrested. He's like, I'm being charged with the crime. And he then he gets so scary and he's like, I'll rip your eyes out and piss in your skull. You messed with the wrong Marine. Yeah. He's so scary. He is so scary. let's see. when Kathy's like, Don't call me son. I'm a lawyer and an officer in the United States Navy and you're under arrest, you son of a bee. Yeah. The witness's excuse. Like it's so good. Cause you know that like pisses him off even. yeah. Ugh. the you have to ask me nicely. That's so ew. The Harvard mouth. It's so good. Mm-hmm. let's see. I think that's all. We did the other ones. So if you could rewrite one element, what would it be? Did you guys have one? I hated that Tom Cruise says the thing at the beginning. Yes. I'm aroused. Yes. Yeah. I do too. It's like We knew we knew he's a kind of a ding dong. We didn't need yeah that too. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I agree. That was a little bit That was like 'cause like she's gonna get it from everybody else. Yeah. Be on her side. And like he kinda is in Cuba. Like once Jack Nicholson says that, like that's when he asks for the transfer order is after that comment. Mm-hmm. But But he'd already said something like it, so it made it less point. Much better. I mean, I guess you were want to be. Yeah. Maybe you needed to see it to see how you are. Yeah. Contributing into the mirror. Yeah. Maybe that was it. But yeah. And then I do think it would be interesting to have the movie not tell us everything at the beginning. Yeah. But I don't know. Maybe it wouldn't be as good. any gaping plot holes that you guys could see? I just had they'd n they would never put the boys on the stand. Especially Downey. Down such a deep. They would never put him on. Especially like without knowing if he was actually there. Like they didn't do their homework. Yeah. No. They would put Harold on the stand. If they were gonna put anyone 'cause Brody was like, if if your whole defense is like they told us they told us, then you're they're the only witnesses to that. They He's like one of kinda has to. And it would be him because definitely not put Downey up there. So he would never been on the stand. And then I just said like the whole concept of like your unit core god country, but they're also mean to Santiago. Like if he's in your unit, like isn't that your brother? Or aren't you supposed to be like With sitting w eating with him at lunch, like that made me so sad when he's like by himself. That's dumb that's the like makes their whole thing fall apart. Yes. It's like no you you don't actually. Like maybe Harold does because he doesn't let other people p do a code red. 'Cause kick their buttons. Why didn't they do a code to Wiley? Right? Yeah. It's like, why haven't you guys done a code red to him? And he's like, 'Cause we're all scared of Dawson. Yeah. And he told and he's He's like objection. Speculation. Yeah. He's like, okay, why haven't you done it? Yeah. Because I care 'cause Harold would kick my butt. Yeah. It just makes it even crazier that he like was not an actor before and carried this presence. He did such a good job. Yeah. And he is a big big dude. Like that's an important part of it. Yeah. And I love when he stands up at the beginning. Like he's like, What happened to saluting an officer? And he stands up, puts his hands in his pockets. So that's really good. Yeah. Okay, so filming began October twenty first, ninety one at the Arlington Memorial Bridge in DC. That's like where the Iwo Jima is. the Guantanamo Bay scenes were filmed in Southern California at Crystal Grove State Park, Fort MacArthur and Naval Air Station Point Mugu. two hundred off duty Marines were allowed to serve as extras for the film. wow. Nice. But the Department of Defence dis denied the production permission to film at the Marine Corps base camp Pendleton. And the courtroom seems were filmed at Culver Studios in California. Yeah. It's not a good light on them. DC's are very notoriously hard to film there. Yeah. You've got Secret Service and all kinds of the story's not flattering for you. That too. Yeah. You know. Yes. Yeah. Did you have a best special effects or stunt? Anyone? The Roquettes at the beginning. The raquettes. yes. I loved that. Yeah. The guys dance. I was like, this is a dance. I hope they're This is a dance. They a battery scent where they would rockets. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Nice. Well, what a scent. But it's so cool. It is fantastic. Yeah. It's so good. It's crazy. I it's like I'm glad they put that in. And it was so long too. Yeah. Like I was just like, yes, this keeps going. Yes, keep going. This is amazing. Mm-hmm. who did the score? So his name his name's Mark Sheiman and he worked a lot with Rob Reiner. He got his start at SNL, which is kind of crazy. funny. Yeah. So then he does like misery with Rob Reiner, and then he does City Slickers, The Addams Family, the first one, Sister Act. These are all really good. I know, a few good men. Sleep is in Seattle. Heart and Souls. yeah. We should do that one. Did you have a best music moment in the movie or just all the very nineties. It's so nineties. Sorry. There was just one like when he's driving he's you ain't nothing but a hound dog. yeah, yeah. When he goes and talks to the guy at the guy the newsstand. Yeah. Yeah. and I was like, what Is what year is it? What year is it? I was like, wait, what? And the song is like pretty interesting. In DC. Yeah. No. No, no, no. no, no, no. Drive 45 minutes and you're walking 10. Mm-hmm. Okay, let's see. Some good behind the scenes. So Jason Alexander was initially cast as Weinberg. I could see that too. Isn't that funny? But he had to withdraw because Seinfeld got renewed for its second season. good. I know. So he was replaced by Kevin Pollock. They're very similar. They are similar. I I love Kevin Pollock. I was gonna say I think I don't know. It's interest it's just so interesting to think of it with. They just needed someone funny. Yeah. Like Kevin Pollock does a better job of not being Outward like a goofball. Just being like the the rock, the steady hand. James Woods w auditioned to play Jessup. Hades on Hercules. Yeah, yeah. but Jack Nicholson was cast way better than Jack Nicholson was paid five million dollars for ten days of shooting. good for him. Earning five hundred thousand dollars a day. Jack Nicholson said it was one of the few times when it was money well spent. I agree. I know I do too. He's so good. Yeah. for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He worked hard. Like it's like yeah, he worked hard. it premiered on December 9th, 1992. it grows 250. Yeah, there it is. She had it. Yeah. it's funny that it's a December movie. It is. I thought it would come out in the fall. But it's funny. But maybe Blackster's time is a better time to come. Oscar Baby is later in the year. it was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Let's see. In A Few Good Men. No. In A Few Good Men, a copy of Stephen King's novel Misery can be seen by Danny's typewriter. Watches he while he watches a ballgame because Rob Warner likes to put his little connections in his movies. Aaron Sorkin is in the movie. He is a concerned bystander. He's in the background talking to a woman in the bar where Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon. is he the guy that's like probably makes him realize like, yeah. He's just they hired me. Why did they hire me? Yeah. Let's see. so the the opening sequence with the drill team. The Marines were actually students from the Texas AM Corps of Cadets fish drill team. So yeah. Texas AM supplies more officers in the US military than any other school. Wow. I mean Texas. Yeah. Yeah. let's see. Keefer Sutherland recalls being on the set the day that production was shooting the scene where Jack Nicholson takes the stand. And he said, like there was such a like memorable silence when Reiner called Cut. He said, No one said a word. And Rob went up to Jack Nicholson and whispered in his ear, Do you want to do another one? And Jack Nicholson said, Well, we're here. So they did another one and it was just as extraordinary. According to Sutherland, the production had a full day of shooting planned following the big standoff between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson. But Reiner was so happy with with what he did. That he shut it all down and sent everyone home early. Because they nailed it. He said they had planned a shoot the whole day and Rob looked at everybody and said, I could ask I couldn't ask for anything more, so you guys all have the desk rest of the day off. Wow. But there's also like people have talked about how normally when they're shooting coverage for scenes like other people's reaction shots, they'll just like play a recording of what the actor did so that they don't have to have Jack Nicholson there all off camera. Yeah. But Jack Nicholson like wanted to do it. So he like did it like twelve times or something just for everyone else's perspective. Yeah. And Kevin Bacon talks about it and he's like, he gave it a hundred percent every single time. And like Rob Riding from is like, Don't you wanna save this for your actual moment? And Jack Nicholson said to him, like, I'm an actor and I this is like such good material. I get to act. So I'm getting to do what I love. That monologue is incredible. Yeah. It is. So Yeah. yeah, it's pretty impressive that he did that for everybody. Yeah. To get all their reactions. Yeah. Like he was a not a egotistical douche. For him. I know. I love hearing stuff like that. Me too. Because you have a perspective for of him of like you're scary. Because he's like top of the A list forever. Yeah. Like he's always been a big deal. Mm-hmm. So it's it's nice to hear that. And I heard that he wanted to do his last 'cause he wanted to like see what everyone did and so then he could put it add more to his and like doing it so many times. Mm-hmm. You can tweak it, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. Adding more fuel to his fire, I guess. That's so impressive 'cause that's a long monologue. It's a lot of work. There's lot of energy. A yet. Yes. Like I'm saying like rage. Yeah. And then I love the way that Rob Brenner like shoots that whole scene. Like the whole movie's good. Like when the doctor's on the stand and like the music kind of clues you in and he starts like z slowly panning in to the doctor and then it cuts to like Tom Cruise and it's slowly panning in on him, like ratcheting it up. Yeah. And then like when Jack O'Neicholson like They open the courtroom doors. yeah. The double open and the camera's so low. So he looks larger than life. Yeah. And he walks in. And then like over the course of the like interrogation, Tom Cruise like like slowly comes taller. Yeah. He moves the camera down on Tom Cruise and like it's looking down. Like it's just so good. Yeah. He does such a good thing. Subtle but are such Yeah. Russ was like he would already be in the courtroom. They wouldn't like bring him in from the back, but he's like a zone. Bad guy entrance. Yeah, Darth Vader's through the doors. Yes. He's so scary. Yeah. He's so good. okay. Any other tidbits that you had, Lace? I think sorry. I think we got all. Okay. Sweaters after dark. Hmm. Who are we shipping? I just said I liked Kathy and Joe. But I like that they didn't make it icky. Or just play into her more stereotypes for her. Yeah. Yes. And like it it's a really good screenplay, but again, I you can tell her character's written by man. She's very much like the like the woman that's the moral center and has to be the babysitter and is only good. Like she doesn't really have a flaw until she's dumb, until it's she's just so dumb. Yeah. It's kind of frustrating. Why is she so dumb? Yeah. I like them together, but I'm glad they did what they did. And yes. Because it's like, they probably go home and totally do it. But yeah, we don't need to see. But I like the implication. That's all I need. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't have a Kiss Mary Kill. I feel like they'd all be too easy. Yeah. It's all Tom Cris. It's all Tom Cris. Although Sam seems like a great husband. Yeah. And a dad. I like that he has his daughter. I'm like, this poor guy, his poor wife is on 20 hour days. My guy got a freaking new baby, too. What are we doing? Yeah. Yeah. Anyway. But that's how it is like when you're litigation. Yeah. who get makes in onto to your get out of jail free card? It's obviously Tom Cruises. Really? And who had the hottest look? Demi's hair. Their little dress on uniforms. I know I love a man in uniform. Yeah. Or a woman to me looks great. Yeah, she does. She's so pretty. She can pull that off. And they're tailored so well. Yeah. Like all of them. For especially for the 90s, I feel like they're really baggy, usually. Yeah, they're fitted perfectly. Yeah. Okay. so it premiered, let's see, it The budget was only forty million dollars and it grossed two hundred and forty million. So they made a lot. obviously it reaches the Hollowed Howled Halls of Hollowed Hells. Hollowed Howls. and then does it end up influencing other movies or shows? Like the courtroom drama, yes. But and then Aaron Sorkin goes on to do The American president and then the West Wing. Like he was on a real totally tell. It's the government thing. Yeah. The walking walk. I was like waiting for it. And then Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon do it. Yeah. Yep. So good. Yep. Yep. Okay. The Rotten Tomato scores, the critics were eighty-five and the audience was eighty-nine. So finally. Yeah. We got it right. We got one right. And Letterboxd was four point one out of five. Yeah. Feels good. Feels good. what holds up best? I just said the script. Like it's so good. Still solid. Mm-hmm. The nineties and it's like that good nineties, unabashedly kinda cheesy. Yes. Like having the dad stuff and having him salute. Like it's it's cheesy, but we We love it. We love that. We love the heart. We want that in our patients. And I don't need you to like laugh at me and make fun of it. Like I don't you're dumb. And not a whitened teeth in sight. So good. Yeah. I mean teeth whitening's fine, but just unique face teeth. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, Tom Cruise. Like Tom Cruise is beautiful and he is a movie star, but yeah, you can tell his front tooth is right in the middle. Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't have its gap in the middle. Not a gap, but like a line. Like it's not in the middle. It's off the side. He fixed it, which is a shame. he did? Mm-hmm. Yeah. Well, he had braces. Remember when he had his Invisalines? Shouldn't have. Invisible. Braces or Invisibilized? I think yeah, like are those the same thing? Invisible lines like a retainer that like covers your whole team. He had something. Could have been braces. Who gets the Rachel Green Haircut Award for deepest cultural impact? I said Demi's hair. Totally. I think you can't handle the truth. Yes. Totally. That's and redone all over the place. It is. You can't handle the truth. They do that on Seinfeld, like George does that. Yeah. Which is kind of a full circle. I'd wonder if he like is sad that he couldn't be in that. Probably. Probably. what's aged like milk? The wow, I'm sexually aroused, Commander. Cause like the bad guys doing it is not great, but they were the bad guys. But they're the bad guy. Having the the good guy do that was icky. Mm-hmm. Like I think the men thought it was good. It's not. Yeah. And maybe it plays in his he needs to arc from that, but it's also like but he's already that way from like you're already a turd up. Yeah. Yeah. Don't we didn't mean that cut that cut that. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, Lice Hair Corner. Kate, I couldn't really find any lore on her hair. I know, but I was really watching it carefully. It's totally short. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Short. It's just like short and wavy and hairspray. Yeah. It's such a weird, like it is on any other human that would look terrible. Yeah. But she looks so pretty. She's so pretty. It's like she had a rounded brush, like a really kind of a smaller barrel, and she's just drying it in a feathered back a waist. It makes it look like a crown hair dude. You like a crowned yes. But it does it's not. I almost wore my hair like that, but I Looks like a polygamist. Yeah. George Washington. I look like George Washington. Well, George Washington is curled under. Yes. But you've like pony things in the back. It has that. Yeah. They're like Yeah. Yeah. She's got it going away from her face. Yeah. It's swoop. She's gorgeous. Yeah. And her interviews on the her hair is like a cute little bob. It's longer. Mm-hmm. She's just so cute. I like can't even with her. She's so like she's so hot. Yeah, she is. Like, yeah, she is. And she's got her good voice. She does. Deep, flinty voice. Yeah, but everyone else's hair is too like military and blah. Like Kevin Bacon's it's points. It's so good. That's like all I'm staring at. Yeah. Tom Cruise's is fine. I do think the military of it all helps the movie age well because it doesn't like s like the music screams nineties. Right. Yeah. But like other than that, like the part where Jack is playing basketball, it's like, this is a ninety and it's high. Like tucked in. It is. it's so good. High high and tight pants. High and tight pants. The way he walks around, guys, that's why he's my favorite. Like no. Kevin Baker's like a lot of hips happening. A lot of hips or a lot of shoulder some Yeah. Confidence. Yeah. And this is before River Wild. Yeah. Two years. Or a year. His hair was all long and nasty in his the interview. I saw him. I was like, What are you doing? It looked it like looked hot. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe I feel that was that year. Yeah. Anyway. How often do you re watch this? I haven't for years. Yeah, I haven't either. I watch it usually in the fall. It's on my fall list. I love that you have a list. She's a good girl. She's organized. She's not anybody. Well better. Well, the works better. You can think outside of what's happening right now. I do feel like it's a good like ease into summer to fall movie for me. Yeah. Mm-hmm. That's what we that's why we did it right now. Yeah. Russell's like, what makes you guys pick your movies? Like, how do you decide? I'm like, we just decide. We do. We kind of go on the seasons. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We do. Yeah. let's see. We're willing fun to come. Yeah. And I it's like I also have my movies, my DC movies when I'm feeling when I miss it. I watch. Yeah. It's like Dave. I love Dave's my favorite. I need to watch that. This American President. I also love American President. I do too. With the net penning. Mm hmm. Anyway. rate it out of ten. Nice. Eight and a half. Nice. I give it the same sexism. I said a nine. Nice. yeah. Because it is like the men the most of the sex men sexism is the bad butt that that Tom. Yeah. One scene. Cut that. Yeah. All right. Any final thoughts or hot takes? no. It's just an interesting view on the military and its kind of really terrible culty behaviors and yeah. Like how they still like loud and so sad that he can't go back. Yeah. And it's like no. It was everything to them. It's like, what do we do then, sir? Yeah. It's like when he's like, he'll be out in six months and he's like, What do we do then? And I feel like they've tried they've made strides, but somebody has tried to go back to Yeah. We're not taking the hazing out. Yeah. Ridiculousness. Yeah. I just said like Rob Reiner is so good. He's so good. He manages to make this like incredibly dialogue heavy and like not just dialogue heavy, but like heavy dialogue with all these jargon and military terms feel totally digestible. And makes it accessible and the way he casts the movie is so important because Tom Cruise saying these words is is gonna be way more entertaining than a lot of other actors and like Jack Nicholson. Like it's just so good. Yeah. yeah. And they talked about having a movie in a courtroom is really hard to make dynamic and interesting. Because everyone's sitting. Everyone's sitting. Like the only two people walking around are Kevin Bacon and Tom Cruise. Like that's it. Yeah. Like It could be a disaster. Yeah it could be so boring. Yeah. And they do such like you're you're locked in. Like the part where like Tom Coons grabs the book out of Kevin Bacon's hand. Like they add that to like keep movement and just keep it interesting. Yeah. Yeah. And like the performances and like looking around and it keeping it not boring. Yes. Yep. And the way he moves the camera and positions the camera. Engaging, like you said, like it's these weird military terms. It's yeah, yes. Lawyer jargon. Like Like medical terminology, like acidosis. Yeah. Acidosis. Yeah. But that's how like courtrooms are. Yeah. I asked Brody like for his yeah. Yeah. I was like, What do you think of that movie as a lawyer? Yeah. And he was like, I have a laundry list of grievance. Qualms. Yeah. He has some qualms. Yeah. He's just like, it's not like It's so mu he's like, I get you have to do it to make it a movie and to make it cinematic, but he's like, There's no way he would just like introduce evidence like this. Like you you do that way before. Yeah. And like the the airman O'Malley. And he's just like, There's so many more things that they would object to. Yeah. But it's fine. Yeah. He's like You have to make it interesting. Yeah. He's like Tom Cruise is like arguing and saying Telling a story in the middle of questioning someone, like you can't do that. Yeah. That's what your closing statement. That's the only time you get to do that. Like you have to you can only ask questions. Yeah. It's so much harder than people think. Yes. So it's crazy. Like it's it's the kind of movie that someone would watch and make them want to become an attorney. Right. But it's not the kind of movie that attorneys like, yeah, that's this is how it's like, yeah, legitimate. I do love how he brings in the airmen. I know I didn't have there's nothing that they're gonna say. Testify to nothing. Yes. But he knows Jessup well enough to know that like scare him just enough. Yeah. Yeah. Like to be like I'm already a corn anyway. I'm gonna I'm gonna be the one to like out myself. You know, yes. I'm not gonna give you the satisfaction of doing that. Yeah. Yeah. He's really scared. And like 'cause he feels justified in his actions, obviously. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They're good foils for each other because they're both Very charismatic and they are the the big dog in the room, but one's for good and one's for bad. Yeah. It's interesting. Okay. if you want to know what movie like lawyers actually like, it's my cousin Vinny. nice. He's like, We watched that in law school. nice. okay, what can we look forward to for next week, Lace? We're gonna do Grease and Grease too. I don't know how we're gonna do both. I know. Yelza. I think we'll be fine. I like this song. Yeah. I think it'll be fun. They're very different, but we just figured we'll do them both. They're both going back to school. Back to school. Yeah. Yeah. Ride Del High. Rideel High. Okay. Yes. Your homework. Go watch Grease.
