ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Stop Prepping for Disasters. Start Prepping for Disruption
What if we’ve been thinking about preparedness the wrong way?
Preppers spend a lot of time trying to predict the next disaster—EMP, hurricanes, cyberattacks, economic collapse, pandemics, war, grid failure, or civil unrest. But the truth is, we don’t know what’s coming next.
And maybe we don’t need to.
In this episode of The Survival and Basic Badass Podcast, we explore a different approach to preparedness: stop preparing for individual disasters and start preparing for the disruptions they create.
Most emergencies eventually create the same handful of problems: loss of electricity, water, food, transportation, communication, income, banking, fuel, or access to essential services.
Instead of trying to predict the next crisis, what if we built our lives so those disruptions were simply harder to hurt us?
We discuss:
• Why scenario-based prepping can create blind spots
• Preparing for consequences instead of specific disasters
• The danger of single points of failure
• Why redundancy isn’t paranoia—it’s good system design
• The difference between stockpiling supplies and building sustainable systems
• Why skills, finances, relationships, and community belong in preparedness
• How modern convenience creates hidden dependencies
• Why your most likely “disaster” may be something completely personal
• Building preparedness systems that provide value even when nothing goes wrong
The goal isn’t to predict the apocalypse.
The goal is to build a life that’s hard to disrupt.
Whether you’re interested in emergency preparedness, self-reliance, homesteading, off-grid living, survival, financial resilience, or simply becoming less dependent on fragile systems, this episode challenges you to rethink what being prepared actually means.
