ABOUT THIS EPISODE
"Strength" is in every class name now: strength yoga, strength Pilates, strength circuits. Moving around with weights isn't the same as strength training, though. In this episode of Strong Principles, Rob and Larry go over the three principles a program needs to build strength.
We cover:
- Progressive overload: adding load, reps, range of motion, tempo, or pauses week to week, and the Greek story of Milo and the bull
- Enough load and tension: why light-dumbbell combo moves don't send a strong enough signal, and why strength is a neurological adaptation before muscle shows up
- Consistency: why constantly switching exercises ("muscle confusion") works against getting strong
- Rest periods, and why you get stronger during recovery, not during the workout
- Why strength is specific: carryover from the big lifts (squat, deadlift, press, bench)
- Machines vs. free weights: why a big leg press doesn't mean a big back squat, and the "illusion of functional strength"
- The six fundamental movement patterns and odd-object training for the real world
If your program can't show you're lifting more, doing more reps, or moving better over time, it isn't strength training.

Everybody has a goal. Almost nobody has a plan for the day the goal gets inconvenient.
In this episode, Zach, Pete, Larry, and Wendy get into the quiet habit that stops most people from reaching what they say they want: negotiating with yourself. The big goal is "lose weight." The sub-goal is "but…
A week away from the gym feels like a setback. It usually isn't.
In this episode, the crew breaks down what actually happens to your body when training stops — and how long you really have before it matters. One week: nothing meaningful. Two weeks: endurance dips, muscle holds. A month or more: no…
Ever wonder why your coach corrects one thing and lets another slide? It's not random — it's a hierarchy. Larry, Rob, and Zach break down the three-tier system coaches use to decide when and how to step in: first, is it safe (non-negotiable); second, are you getting the intended stimulus from the e…
You've probably said it, or thought it: "I don't feel like I'm doing enough." It's one of the most common statements we hear from people who come to us from high-intensity backgrounds — CrossFit, boot camps, no-rest-days culture — where more was always the answer.
In this episode, Rob, Pete, Larry…
