00:00:00.800 --> 00:00:08.240
I was talking to a client once who had so much anxiety about his new job that he was on the verge of quitting.
00:00:08.320 --> 00:00:11.199
And in fact, in a moment of panic, he almost did.
00:00:11.359 --> 00:00:16.079
His boss getting pulled into a meeting was the only thing that saved him that day.
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:25.920
In a previous role, my client had been the rock star, the type of guy to ace performance reviews, guaranteed bonus, employee of the year.
00:00:26.160 --> 00:00:33.280
Even among his friends, he was used to coming out on top, whether it's football, basketball, however they were competing.
00:00:33.520 --> 00:00:38.640
But now, his new colleagues were outshining him, which makes total sense.
00:00:38.799 --> 00:00:44.799
They had been at the company for years, and as a new person, he had a lot to learn.
00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:54.560
But when you're used to being number one, it can feel frustrating or demoralizing when you stop hearing as much praise as you are used to.
00:00:54.719 --> 00:00:56.479
It no longer feels easy.
00:00:56.640 --> 00:00:59.679
We're no longer hearing great job all the time.
00:00:59.920 --> 00:01:04.159
And this is where external validation really trips people up.
00:01:04.480 --> 00:01:13.280
Instead of focusing on doing a great job because you care about contributing, you are worried about what everybody else is thinking of you.
00:01:13.519 --> 00:01:14.480
Am I good enough?
00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:16.239
Do I look incompetent?
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:23.439
When things feel hard and you are not sure you're going to make it, there's a good chance you are not failing.
00:01:23.680 --> 00:01:27.840
You're simply holding yourself to an unreasonable standard.
00:01:28.319 --> 00:01:30.560
This causes a lot of suffering.
00:01:36.079 --> 00:01:38.400
High performers used to being the best.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:49.200
That's why they got recruited in the first place, and now they feel like the worst because they're comparing themselves to people who've been in the job for a very long time.
00:01:49.439 --> 00:01:59.040
One thing we work on together is slowing down and clarifying their role and expectations for who they are in this moment.
00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:08.080
So an unreasonable expectation would be to think I need to be as confident and knowledgeable as the CEO.
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:11.280
Here's a more rational expectation.
00:02:11.759 --> 00:02:18.319
I aim to perform well as a new hire, and I'm capable of figuring things out.
00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:32.639
If you want to be effective in your new job or anything that's new for you, think about what actions you could take to help you, such as asking questions, listening, building relationships.
00:02:32.879 --> 00:02:36.960
When we feel insecure, we often do the opposite.
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:41.680
We stay quiet, we try to figure everything out on our own.
00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:48.639
We wait to be hit by this big bolt of confidence, and we think that is going to relieve us of our anxiety.
00:02:48.879 --> 00:02:55.039
Confidence doesn't come from waiting for this confidence inspiration angel to hit us.
00:02:55.280 --> 00:02:57.439
It comes from participating.
00:02:57.680 --> 00:03:01.439
Yes, there are plenty of things that you don't know yet.
00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:04.159
That doesn't mean you have to stay silent.
00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:11.039
So focus on what's in your control here, your effort, your curiosity, how you show up.
00:03:11.199 --> 00:03:12.879
You don't need to know everything.
00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:16.080
In fact, that's why it's great to ask questions.
00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:19.840
Questions add a lot of value to the conversation you're having as well.
00:03:20.080 --> 00:03:28.719
So instead of putting so much emphasis on the value of confidence, and I need to show up with confidence today, or else I will crumble.
00:03:28.960 --> 00:03:32.560
Lean into the values of curiosity, of courage.
00:03:32.719 --> 00:03:41.919
There are other values that we can tap into here to really help us in situations where we are feeling nervous or unsure of ourselves.
00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:54.240
And when you're curious and open, you learn faster, you build relationships, you're more effective than if you are sitting quietly by yourself, trying to figure everything out alone.
00:03:54.479 --> 00:04:03.439
So if you're starting something new, whether that's taking a promotion, having a baby, scaling a mountain, and you're wondering, am I even cut out for this?
00:04:03.759 --> 00:04:06.879
Ask yourself, what is my role here?
00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:10.879
What reasonable expectations do I have right now?
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:14.159
What values and thoughts can get me there?
00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:21.199
Again, an example of an unreasonable or unhelpful thought is I need to know everything.
00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:27.759
A more rational, helpful thought is, if I don't know something, I will find the answer.
00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:32.560
And I get it, there is a lot of discomfort that comes along with being the new person.
00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:34.160
I have been there myself.
00:04:34.399 --> 00:04:39.680
That's stuck in the mud feeling, like you are conscious of your own incompetence.
00:04:39.920 --> 00:04:45.920
To get you through the hard part, it can help to think about what life will be like on the other side.
00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:51.519
This is how I survived the bone-chilling winters in Boston when I was a carless grad student.
00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:54.000
I've probably talked about this before.
00:04:54.319 --> 00:05:05.279
I remember walking through the common at night, weather-induced tears streaming down my face, soaking into my scarf, and I would tell myself, this will be over soon.
00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:12.319
You will be back in your apartment, it will be warm, you will take a hot shower and thaw out and put on your pajamas.
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:14.879
This will soon be over.
00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:16.480
You're almost home.
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:17.839
You can do this.
00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:24.480
And I still recite mantras like this whenever I'm facing a physical or emotional challenge.
00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:26.240
You can do this.
00:05:26.480 --> 00:05:27.839
You're almost there.
00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:30.800
Soon this part will be over.
00:05:31.120 --> 00:05:35.600
So if you're struggling right now, think about life on the other side.
00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:40.399
Visualize how it will feel when you make it through this hard part.
00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:44.639
And when you keep going, you start feeling more competent.
00:05:44.800 --> 00:05:49.040
And this eventually leads to feeling more confident.
00:05:50.319 --> 00:05:52.720
Notice how far you've already come.
00:05:53.040 --> 00:06:00.639
We are very good at noticing when we feel like we are bad at something, less good at noticing our improvement.
00:06:00.959 --> 00:06:07.360
We make progress slowly and often don't realize it because the change becomes who we are.
00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:17.120
And because we're busy comparing ourselves to others, it's important to check your progress against yourself, not against other people.
00:06:17.680 --> 00:06:28.079
And this is where my clients, like the guy I mentioned at the beginning of this episode, this is where they really struggle, especially when they're in new roles.
00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:31.439
They can't sleep because they feel like they are failing.
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:38.639
Not because they are, but because they don't know as much as Charlie in Finance, who's been at the company for 20 years.
00:06:38.879 --> 00:06:42.480
That is not a fair or reasonable comparison.
00:06:42.800 --> 00:06:46.480
So instead of worrying, why don't I know this yet?
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:55.120
Try asking, what do I know now that I didn't know two weeks ago or a month ago, six months ago?
00:06:55.360 --> 00:07:00.160
And it's so fun for me to do these reflections with the people I work with.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:05.839
One client went from zero client presentations to leading four in a week.
00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:16.800
Another went from panicking at the thought of doing a routine work task to figuring out a new system that could help the entire team, and she taught it to them.
00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:21.600
And these aren't just wins, they're evidence that you're moving forward.
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:24.800
I had a small reminder of this myself recently.
00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:31.360
I was at the gym 30 seconds into my chest press routine, and this guy comes up to me and asks, Are you almost done?
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:32.399
Have you been here long?
00:07:32.639 --> 00:07:34.800
And I offer a friendly, oh, I just got here.
00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:36.160
I'll only be a few minutes.
00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:37.279
Can we share?
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:38.000
He asks.
00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:49.279
Now, I don't mind sharing, but it doesn't make sense for the amount of time I'll be there, and maybe I need to up my gym game, but I was only gonna be there for two minutes, so I repeat, I'll literally just be two minutes.
00:07:49.519 --> 00:08:02.720
So he stands there and he watches me, and I find this a little weird since there are literally 100 other machines that he can use while he waits, but I don't feel rushed, I don't feel uncomfortable, I don't feel like I have to stand my ground by staying on this machine.
00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:05.120
I just finish my set and move on.
00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:08.560
And in the past, that interaction would have thrown me.
00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:11.680
I probably would have jumped up and offered my space to this guy.
00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:13.040
Oh, oh, you can take it.
00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:16.720
In fact, I never used to use the machines at all in the gym.
00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:24.959
I would hide away in the all-female body pump classes, and we would just lift lightweights to the tune of Usher, and it was super fun.
00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:33.840
But now I like using the machines and I feel comfortable out there because I really stopped caring what anyone else thought in that room.
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:45.200
Or rather, I started practicing more rational thoughts myself, such as they don't really care about me working out and aren't paying any attention to me at all.
00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:47.200
So I've changed.
00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:49.120
You are changing too.
00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:51.759
You just might not notice it yet.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:59.039
When things feel hard, it's easy to assume something has gone wrong or that something's wrong with you.
00:08:59.360 --> 00:09:03.919
What if it just means you are in the middle of something that matters?
00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:06.080
And the middle is messy.
00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:10.000
You're probably making much more progress than you realize.
00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:14.480
So take a moment to reflect on how far you've come and keep going.
00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:15.679
That's all for now.
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:28.240
I'm Sarah Michatel, and in case you didn't know, I am an American in England, and some of the things that I love to talk about are communication, global exploration, stoicism, and well being.
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:30.559
So that is the mix you will find here.
00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:36.080
