ABOUT THIS EPISODE
You can learn a lot about life by doing one thing most of us never do: watching the credits all the way to the end. After a movie night surprise, we turn to Colossians 4:7-10 and find a set of names that rarely get the spotlight, yet carry massive weight in the early church: Tychicus, Onesimus, and Aristarchus. Their stories shine a bright light on behind the scenes ministry and why quiet faithfulness often moves the gospel farther than public visibility ever could.
We walk through what each man contributes and why it matters today. Tychicus shows the power of dependable service as he carries Paul’s message and personal news to the church in Colossae. Onesimus shows the heart of the gospel, because Paul calls him a faithful brother and claims him as “one of you,” reminding us that no background, history, or label can block the grace of Jesus Christ. Aristarchus shows what it looks like to stand close in hardship, choosing encouragement even while suffering alongside Paul.
If you have ever felt overlooked, unsure of your role, or tempted to believe your contribution is too small, this devotional lands like a needed reminder: God knows your place in his plan. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs encouragement, and leave a review with the behind the scenes role you want to embrace next.

00:00:10.240 --> 00:00:13.439
Good morning and welcome to Starting Right.
00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:19.839
I am Danny Mack, and I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great start to your day.
00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:27.839
So grab your cup of coffee, sit back and relax for the next five minutes as I help you start your day by starting right.
00:00:33.359 --> 00:00:35.119
Well, good morning everyone.
00:00:35.439 --> 00:00:39.920
I was watching a movie the other night, and I did something that I rarely do.
00:00:40.159 --> 00:00:44.000
At the end of the movie, I actually watched all of the credits.
00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:53.759
And I was astounded to see the number of people that were involved in making this film that were doing so many different things behind the scenes that helped to put it together.
00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:59.679
It just sort of blew my mind to think that it took that many people to create the film that I just watched.
00:00:59.759 --> 00:01:02.799
And it wasn't because it was a bad movie, no, it was it was a good movie.
00:01:02.960 --> 00:01:07.920
But there were so many people involved behind the scenes that it was just absolutely astounding.
00:01:08.239 --> 00:01:12.640
It wasn't long after that, I pulled out my Bible and was reading through the book of Colossians.
00:01:12.799 --> 00:01:14.319
And I came to chapter four.
00:01:14.480 --> 00:01:19.920
And in that last part of chapter four, Paul brings what my Bible calls the final greeting.
00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:22.959
And in these greetings he mentions three characters.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:24.000
Let me just read it to you.
00:01:24.159 --> 00:01:27.359
It's chapter four, starting in verse seven of the book of Colossians.
00:01:27.599 --> 00:01:30.799
He says, Tychicus will tell you all the news about me.
00:01:30.959 --> 00:01:34.319
He is a dear brother, a faithful minister, and a fellow servant in the Lord.
00:01:34.560 --> 00:01:41.840
I'm sending him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our circumstances, and that he may encourage your hearts.
00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:46.319
He is coming with Onesimus, our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you.
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:48.640
They will tell you everything that is happening here.
00:01:48.879 --> 00:01:54.799
My fellow prisoner, Aristocus, sends you his greetings, as does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas.
00:01:55.040 --> 00:02:01.280
So I want to talk to you this morning just about those first three guys, Tychicus, Onesimus, and Aristocus.
00:02:01.439 --> 00:02:06.799
Paul lists these guys because they are important to him in his ministry, yet we know very little about them.
00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:10.319
They are the guys who are behind the scenes in a lot of cases.
00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:14.800
They didn't get to stand in the spotlight like Paul or Peter or James or John.
00:02:14.960 --> 00:02:17.039
They were not part of the spotlight crowd.
00:02:17.199 --> 00:02:23.840
No, these were the guys who were working behind the scenes, and yet they are important to Paul, and they're important to the ministry of the gospel.
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:27.439
Let's look at how these men impacted Paul's ministry.
00:02:27.680 --> 00:02:29.039
First there was Tychicus.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:32.400
Tychicus was doing a very specific and important job.
00:02:32.560 --> 00:02:37.599
He was going to deliver personal news about Paul as well as Paul's letter to the church in Colossa.
00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:43.280
The gospel was continuing to be spread because of the faithfulness of Tychicus.
00:02:43.840 --> 00:02:45.199
Then there's Onesimus.
00:02:45.599 --> 00:02:47.360
His name actually means useful.
00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:51.680
But as a slave, his master Philemon thought he was useless.
00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:59.759
And yet Paul commended Onesimus as a faithful and dearly loved brother, saying to the church that he is one of you.
00:03:00.240 --> 00:03:10.240
And by doing so, Paul was declaring the universality of the gospel message, that there is no one who is ineligible to receive the forgiveness and grace of Christ.
00:03:10.400 --> 00:03:21.680
And when they receive that, they automatically become our brothers and sisters in Christ, no matter where they're from, or what they look like, or the color of their skin, or their background.
00:03:21.840 --> 00:03:22.960
None of that matters.
00:03:23.120 --> 00:03:25.680
We are all part of the body of Christ.
00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:28.080
Then there was Aristicus.
00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:30.479
Aristicus was a prisoner along with Paul.
00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:34.560
So he was Paul's companion in the suffering in his ministry.
00:03:35.039 --> 00:03:39.680
When we're going through suffering in our lives, we need people around us who will be there for us.
00:03:39.919 --> 00:03:44.240
Aristicus may have had to be there, but he didn't have to be an encouragement to Paul.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:51.199
But in the middle of his suffering, he chose to be an encourager and gave Paul strength in what he was doing.
00:03:52.319 --> 00:04:05.360
We often talk about fulfilling God's call in our lives, and sometimes we think that means that we're going to be upfront doing all the upfront things and making the big decisions and drawing the big crowds for evangelism, or teaching great congregations.
00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:07.599
That's not what it is.
00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:15.680
Just as in the movies, there are far more people behind the scenes who are necessary in order to be able to make it come together.
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:19.199
We know that within the body of Christ it works much the same way.
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:26.879
The number of people behind the scenes, supporting, encouraging, and praying for those who are in the spotlight, who are the leaders.
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:28.560
That's what really is important.
00:04:29.120 --> 00:04:32.639
And right now it's really important that we pray for our Christian leaders.
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:35.519
They need strength to continue to declare God's word.
00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:40.720
They need strength and wisdom to know how to live right and declare what is only truth.
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:44.560
They need God's hand on them to protect them and shield them from attacks.
00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:47.680
And God has called each one of us to be a part of that.
00:04:47.920 --> 00:04:50.399
Maybe we're just one of those behind the scenes guys.
00:04:50.639 --> 00:04:53.439
Maybe we're simply the ones that are helping to carry the message.
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:59.360
Maybe we are the ones who are feeling sort of left out that we really don't belong, but we do belong.
00:04:59.839 --> 00:05:03.920
Maybe we are prepared to be with our Christian brothers and sisters as they are suffering.
00:05:04.079 --> 00:05:09.759
They're going through difficult times, and we are here to encourage and hold them up and to bless them and be with them.
00:05:10.079 --> 00:05:21.360
You may not know what your role is, but God does, and he will help you find your place so that you know what part you have to play in God's great and beautiful plan for the building of his kingdom.
00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:32.959
God's got exciting stuff for each one of us, and I'm so grateful that when we look at what he is leading us into, we never have to doubt that he will produce something good if we are faithful to him.
00:05:33.519 --> 00:05:34.879
Have a great day, my friends.
00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:37.600
Remember that you are an important part of God's plan.
00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:40.079
And we will talk again tomorrow.
00:05:47.759 --> 00:05:49.360
Thank you for listening today.
00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:54.879
And I invite you to join me Monday to Friday right here on Starting Right with Danny Mack.
