ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Welcome to the first ever episode of Spero: Between the Lines! - the Spero show that peels back the curtain for a deep dive into the Spero articles themselves. Each episode we speak to a different Spero writer to learn more about the country that they produced content on. We chat with them about their articles in more depth, but also take a look further into their production process behind developing the content!
This week we are joined by Amelie Dring to take us between the lines on Swedish Design concepts and the Gay Audacity of Swedish couple Malin & Jules in the founding of their queer community Flatmates.
You can read Amelie’s article “Minimalism, Functionalism and ‘Lagom’: Swedish Design Principles and Social Values” here

Episode Fact Check:
Minecraft was created by Swedish game programmer Markus Persson in 2009. A game which as of 2023 has sold over 300 million copies worldwide. Source
Out & Abt are queer events in SD, LA, SF, ATL & NYC 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ 21+. Source
Back in 1974, Sweden became the world’s first to replace gender-specific maternity leave with parental leave, i.e. the possibility for both parents to stay at home with their children – and, subsequently, for both parents to pursue a career. Source
Twenty years after the introduction of the parental leave, fathers’ use of parental leave had increased somewhat, but not enough to be close to gender equal use. This led to further reforms in parental leave such as in 1995 the introduction of the ‘reserved month’ for each parent. Source
