ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Bone density isn’t a “later” problem, and it’s definitely not a boring one. I’m breaking down why your bones are living tissue that respond to how you move, how strong you are, what you eat, and even how well you balance and recover from everyday life in midlife. If you’ve ever worried about osteoporosis, osteopenia, or a future fracture, this is the mindset shift that turns fear into a plan.
We start with the big lever: load. I explain the difference between weight-bearing exercise (walking, hiking, stairs, dancing) and strength training (squats, lunges, step-ups, bands, dumbbells), and why you don’t need extreme workouts to support bone health. I also share a key safety note: if you have osteoporosis, osteopenia, or a history of fractures, certain loaded spinal flexion and twisting moves may not be right for you, so personalized guidance matters.
Next we talk fall prevention, because balance is the quiet superpower that keeps bones intact. I walk through simple balance drills you can do at home, why Tai Chi is so effective, and how “moving through your feet” goes beyond steps by building ankle mobility, foot strength, and confident walking mechanics. Then we hit nutrition for bone health: calcium and vitamin D, why food-first calcium sources often win, and the bigger picture that includes protein, magnesium, vitamin K, and more. I also clear up the soda myth: carbonation isn’t usually the issue, but cola ingredients can be.
If you’re ready to act, I created a short, doable 10-day bone density challenge to help you build momentum. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more women can find practical bone health advice that actually works.
Thanks so much for listening!

00:00:26.480 --> 00:00:32.240
Pour something in your glass that makes you happy because it's time for Spandex and Wine.
00:00:33.600 --> 00:00:36.240
Welcome back to the Spandex and Wine Podcast.
00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:49.920
I am your host, Robin Hackney, and today we are talking about something that I think every woman should have on her radar, especially as we navigate through midlife, and that is bone density.
00:00:50.079 --> 00:01:00.960
And before you decide this is going to be a boring episode about osteoporosis and calcium supplements, I want you to hang with me because it's actually a really empowering conversation.
00:01:01.439 --> 00:01:04.000
Your bones are living tissue.
00:01:04.159 --> 00:01:15.200
They respond to what you do, they respond to how you move, how strong you are, what you eat, and even how well you balance.
00:01:15.920 --> 00:01:23.359
So while we can't control every factor that affects our bone density, there is a lot we can do to support our bones.
00:01:23.519 --> 00:01:32.480
And I talked about this in this this week's newsletter, and I broke it down into four things that I thought we need to talk about here on the podcast as well.
00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:35.920
So the first one being strength and weight bearing exercise.
00:01:36.159 --> 00:01:45.519
The second one, balance and fall prevention, third, moving through your feet, and three, getting enough nutrients to support your bones.
00:01:45.760 --> 00:01:47.280
And then we're gonna talk about calcium.
00:01:47.439 --> 00:01:54.799
Yes, we have to do that if we're talking about bone density, but I think there's a little bit of confusion around calcium and bone health.
00:01:54.959 --> 00:02:01.840
So let's jump in and let's start with that first thing that I mentioned: strength training and weight-bearing exercise.
00:02:02.079 --> 00:02:11.360
And I want to make one distinction because people often lump all exercise together when we are talking about bone health.
00:02:11.599 --> 00:02:17.520
Your bones need load, they need a reason to adapt.
00:02:18.080 --> 00:02:24.000
Weight-bearing exercise means you're upright and your bones are working against gravity.
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:34.639
So think walking, hiking, climbing stairs, dancing, um, jogging, if that's appropriate for you, and certain types of aerobics.
00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:37.360
Then we have resistance or strength training.
00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:50.000
That's lifting weights, using resistance bands, weight machines, body weight exercises, uh, squats, lunges, step-ups, and things like getting up and down from a chair.
00:02:50.400 --> 00:03:00.800
The Bone and Health Osteoporosis Foundation specifically recommends both weight-bearing and muscle strengthening exercise for bone health.
00:03:01.039 --> 00:03:03.680
And here's the part I really want you to hear.
00:03:03.919 --> 00:03:05.840
You don't have to be a power lifter.
00:03:06.400 --> 00:03:11.360
We're not talking about walking into the gym tomorrow and trying to deadlift your body weight.
00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:13.199
Please do not try and do that.
00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:17.599
We are talking about giving your body a reason to stay strong.
00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:34.479
So maybe that looks like squatting with a dumbbell, maybe it's doing step-ups, maybe it's carrying your groceries, maybe it's doing resistance band exercises, and maybe it's getting up and down from a chair without using your hands.
00:03:34.719 --> 00:03:36.960
All of those little things count.
00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:46.960
And if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia, a history of fractures, or you're concerned about your bone health, your exercise program may need to be modified.
00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:54.560
Some movements, particularly loaded spinal flexion and certain twisting movements, aren't appropriate for everyone.
00:03:54.800 --> 00:04:01.919
So this is one of those situations where individualized guidance really matters and a trainer can make a difference.
00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:09.280
Even in a group fitness class, a trainer can't see everyone, a trainer doesn't know everything that's going on in your body.
00:04:09.520 --> 00:04:15.199
So it's important that you make sure that you know where you stand, what you can do, and what you can't do.
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:22.800
And um, you'll see a reel that I created this week with just some simple exercises and a good place for you to start.
00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:24.319
So go find that reel.
00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:26.079
If you can't find it, message me.
00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:35.839
You can either um email me at info at spandexandwine.com or you can text me at 913-392-2877, and I'm happy to guide you there.
00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:38.079
But I'm also taking it a step further.
00:04:38.399 --> 00:04:46.319
I have created a 10-day bone density challenge, if you will, and it's going to be short and simple and very doable.
00:04:46.480 --> 00:04:54.319
And the idea isn't to give you another giant workout program that takes an hour and requires you to rearrange your life.
00:04:54.639 --> 00:05:05.519
It is actually just a bite size, just small things that you can do, and things you might be doing already, or maybe you've forgotten about them in your program and you can add them back in.
00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:09.600
It's about giving you small things that you can actually do.
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:18.800
Because when it comes to bone health, just like with anything, consistency is going to beat the occasional workout every single time.
00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:22.800
So the second thing I wanted to make mention of is balance.
00:05:23.439 --> 00:05:28.399
And you might be thinking, what in the heck does balance have to do with bone density?
00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:36.800
And technically, balance doesn't make your bones denser, but it can help keep you from breaking them.
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:39.120
And it's a pretty important distinction.
00:05:39.279 --> 00:05:45.680
As we get older, one of the biggest threats to our bones isn't just bone loss, it is falling.
00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:52.959
You can have perfectly decent bone density and still fracture something if you take a hard fall.
00:05:53.199 --> 00:05:57.600
So we want to make sure we train the thing that keeps us upright.
00:05:57.920 --> 00:05:59.759
Balance is a skill.
00:05:59.920 --> 00:06:05.360
And it's one of those things that tends to disappear quietly if we don't practice it.
00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:18.959
Standing on one foot, doing heel raises and toe raises, maybe walking heel to toe, practicing getting up and down from a chair, doing exercises that challenge your stability.
00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:27.839
Even something as simple as standing at the kitchen counter and practicing standing on one leg for 20 to 30 seconds can be very useful.
00:06:28.399 --> 00:06:37.360
And please do not turn this into a TikTok challenge where you stand on one foot in the middle of the room with your eyes closed because you want to prove something.
00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:42.399
Please use a countertop or a sturdy chair if you need support.
00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:46.319
We are training balance, not auditioning for cirque de soleil.
00:06:46.720 --> 00:06:48.480
I just want to make that very clear.
00:06:48.639 --> 00:06:55.519
There's so many things out there that I feel like you need to ask yourself: does this make sense?
00:06:55.759 --> 00:06:57.600
What this person is saying?
00:06:57.759 --> 00:07:06.160
Um, I also wanted to make mention that the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation recommends balance work as a part of reducing fall risk.
00:07:06.240 --> 00:07:10.319
And exercises such as Tai Chi and balance training can help.
00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:12.720
I think Tai Chi is so wonderful.
00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:18.079
And if you haven't tried it, maybe just add that into your weekly regimen.
00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:20.959
Maybe just, you know, choose a day of the week that you're going to do that.
00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:25.680
It can even be on your rest day if you're going through just a simple try, uh, Tai Chi.
00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:30.079
So the third thing I mentioned was moving through your feet.
00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:39.920
And I love this concept because sometimes we make fitness so complicated that we forget one of the most basic things our bodies were designed to do.
00:07:40.240 --> 00:07:41.040
Walk.
00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:43.199
Walking is weight bearing.
00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:52.079
Your feet hit the ground, your body responds to gravity, your muscles work, your joints move, and your bones experience load.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:57.279
You don't have to have a fancy workout every day to be supporting your bones.
00:07:57.519 --> 00:07:58.480
Go for the walk.
00:07:58.639 --> 00:08:03.600
Walk the hills, take the stairs, park further out in the parking lot.
00:08:03.839 --> 00:08:07.279
Maybe walk around your neighborhood, walk while you're talking on the phone.
00:08:07.439 --> 00:08:09.600
I feel like that is a really good one.
00:08:09.759 --> 00:08:13.519
Um, taking a walk after dinner, that's going to help you with blood sugar as well.
00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:15.120
We've talked about that before.
00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:21.120
Just five minutes of movement after you eat and walking or marching in place would be great.
00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:25.360
But another thing that I want you to think about is paying attention to your feet.
00:08:25.600 --> 00:08:26.879
How are you walking?
00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:28.720
Are you picking your feet up?
00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:30.399
Are you rolling through the foot?
00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:32.399
Are you able to push off your toes?
00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:35.039
Are your ankles strong and mobile?
00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:45.279
Your feet and ankles are part of a balanced system, and your body makes tiny adjustments at the ankles all the time to help keep you upright.
00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:49.759
So when I say move through your feet, I'm not just talking about getting your 10,000 steps.
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:57.919
I'm talking about maintaining the strength and mobility and awareness that help you move through the world confidently.
00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:01.120
And walking is a pretty fantastic place to start.
00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:07.759
However, like I said before, strength training is going to be so important for you as well.
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:11.200
And just loading the body through those exercises.
00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:17.039
So a combination of moving through your feet and then adding that strength training in.
00:09:17.279 --> 00:09:27.200
So number four, okay, so food, giving your bones the raw materials that it needs to support the process.
00:09:27.279 --> 00:09:29.120
And this is where calcium comes in.
00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:32.799
Calcium is incredibly important for bone health.
00:09:32.960 --> 00:09:33.679
We all know that.
00:09:33.840 --> 00:09:40.720
Most of the calcium in your body is stored in your bones and your teeth, where it provides structure and hardness.
00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:45.360
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium.
00:09:45.600 --> 00:09:59.519
And if you'll recall from the skin series that we did, there are so many things that you need just to make sure that you are supporting your body completely.
00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:10.159
I mentioned in that skin series that cholesterol often is the bad guy, but we need cholesterol to build, have vitamin D absorbed in our body.
00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:15.919
And we need calcium, or I'm sorry, we need vitamin D to help your body absorb calcium.
00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:20.799
So if you can see how everything is connected, we've talked about that connection before.
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:22.320
We talked about it in the skin series.
00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:24.399
You're going to hear me say it over and over again.
00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:26.720
It's not just one standalone thing.
00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:32.320
So I want to be clear that more calcium doesn't automatically mean more bone density.
00:10:32.639 --> 00:10:36.720
Think about calcium as part of like the maintenance crew.
00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:47.440
Your body needs enough calcium to maintain the structure of your bones and help prevent your body from pulling calcium out of your skeleton when it needs it elsewhere.
00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:54.240
But taking more calcium doesn't mean you're going to keep building denser and denser bones.
00:10:55.039 --> 00:11:00.080
There's a point where more isn't better, just like anything else.
00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:07.759
And I mean, I'm just going to put a loose term out there, but please check with your physician for women 51 or 50 and older.
00:11:07.840 --> 00:11:09.440
I don't know why they say 51.
00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:14.879
The recommended daily intake of calcium is generally 1200 milligrams per day.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:17.120
But again, check with your physician.
00:11:17.360 --> 00:11:23.519
And I would rather see you start by looking at your food instead of adding a supplement.
00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:32.879
So dairy products like yogurt and milk and cheese, calcium fortified foods, certain leafy greens have calcium, and that would be great for you.
00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:36.240
Tofu, that's made with calcium sulfate.
00:11:36.399 --> 00:11:39.039
You could throw that in your regimen if you want.
00:11:39.200 --> 00:11:42.879
Just recently I found out that my chickens really are fond of tofu.
00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:46.000
As we're going through the salad challenge, I don't know what the heck I was thinking.
00:11:46.159 --> 00:11:47.279
I don't eat tofu.
00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:48.559
I mean, I'm not against it.
00:11:48.639 --> 00:11:50.240
It's just not something that I typically eat.
00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:52.320
But for some reason, I thought, let me grab some tofu.
00:11:52.480 --> 00:11:53.679
I'm going to stick that on a salad.
00:11:53.840 --> 00:11:54.320
I didn't.
00:11:54.399 --> 00:11:57.360
I took a bite of it and I fed it to the chickens and they absolutely loved it.
00:11:57.519 --> 00:11:58.720
So there's that.
00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:04.399
But some canned fish has edible bones in there that would be good for you too.
00:12:04.559 --> 00:12:05.759
Like a canned salmon.
00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:13.919
I'm not saying that cans are the best way to get your nutrients, but in this instance, um, you can grind that up.
00:12:14.159 --> 00:12:21.840
My mother-in-law used to make amazing, amazing salmon patties, and she would use the canned salmon with the bones and just crush it all up.
00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:25.039
And I don't think we realize how good that is for us.
00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:26.879
There are so many different options.
00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:29.120
And calcium isn't working alone.
00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:35.360
Like I said before, you also need vitamin D because vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium.
00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:38.080
So make sure that you're getting that in conjunction.
00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:40.720
And your overall diet matters too.
00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:48.799
Protein matters, magnesium matters, vitamin K and other micronutrients play roles in bone health.
00:12:49.039 --> 00:12:55.600
So please don't just think at this from this conversation that, okay, do I need a calcium supplement?
00:12:55.840 --> 00:13:01.519
I'd rather you ask yourself, am I giving my body what it needs to maintain strong bones?
00:13:01.679 --> 00:13:04.480
Because I feel like that is the bigger conversation.
00:13:05.600 --> 00:13:20.960
And another note to think about calcium helps maintain bone strength and prevents bone loss, but it generally stabilizes existing bone density rather than actively building new bone.
00:13:21.279 --> 00:13:24.879
So that's an important piece to discuss with your doctor.
00:13:25.279 --> 00:13:35.840
I've also heard there's kind of a myth out there that carbonated beverages affect bone density and they harm bone health.
00:13:36.159 --> 00:13:39.360
And it's true and it's not true.
00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:42.399
So bubbles are usually pretty safe.
00:13:42.559 --> 00:13:45.519
It's the ingredients that you need to look at.
00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:48.559
So it's more the cola connection.
00:13:48.799 --> 00:14:03.440
There are studies that link cola drinks to lower bone density, and it's because of specific ingredients in them, like phosphoric acid, caffeine, added sugar, rather than just the carbonation itself.
00:14:03.600 --> 00:14:15.200
So if you've heard that as well, I want you to make sure that you tuck that away and just realize it's usually the ingredients in the colas and it's not necessarily the carbonation.
00:14:15.440 --> 00:14:28.480
So putting all of these pieces together, if you want to support your bones in midlife, I would like for you to think about those four things: load, balance, movement, and nutrition.
00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:34.720
Give your bones a reason to stay strong through resistance and weight-bearing exercise.
00:14:34.879 --> 00:14:36.080
I can't stress that enough.
00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:40.000
Train your balance so you're less likely to fall.
00:14:40.879 --> 00:14:50.240
Keep moving through your feet with walking and other upright activities and give your body the nutrients it needs to support bone health.
00:14:50.879 --> 00:14:54.480
And here's what I really don't want you to do.
00:14:55.120 --> 00:14:58.960
Wait until you have a bone density scan that scares you into action.
00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:03.120
Because bone health isn't something you can fix in a weekend.
00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:06.480
It's something you build into your life.
00:15:06.639 --> 00:15:09.759
And the good news is you are not too old to start.
00:15:09.919 --> 00:15:11.279
You don't have to be 25.
00:15:11.360 --> 00:15:12.799
You don't have to be an athlete.
00:15:12.960 --> 00:15:15.600
You don't need a perfect workout routine.
00:15:15.840 --> 00:15:20.559
You just need to start giving your bones a little more attention.
00:15:21.039 --> 00:15:25.840
And that's exactly why I have created a 10-day bone density challenge.
00:15:26.159 --> 00:15:33.519
I wanted something that would take this conversation out of the podcast and my newsletter and give you something for real life.
00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:43.440
So for 10 days, we're going to focus on simple movements that help you work on strength, balance, bone supportive movement, just short, simple, very doable.
00:15:44.080 --> 00:15:48.960
Because I don't want you to listen to this episode, nod your head, and then forget about it tomorrow.
00:15:49.120 --> 00:15:50.960
I want you to actually do something.
00:15:51.200 --> 00:15:59.600
So if you've been telling yourself, I really need to start lifting or I need to work on my balance or I should probably be doing more for my bones, this is your invitation.
00:15:59.759 --> 00:16:01.600
It's 10 days, it's$10.
00:16:02.240 --> 00:16:02.960
That's it.
00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:05.840
Let's give your bones a little attention.
00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:09.759
So later in life, your future self will thank you.
00:16:10.080 --> 00:16:11.039
All right, you guys.
00:16:11.200 --> 00:16:13.440
So that's my bone health pep talk for today.
00:16:13.519 --> 00:16:18.159
And the biggest takeaway is your bones are truly listening to what you do.
00:16:18.320 --> 00:16:27.919
Every walk, every squat, every step up, every weight that you pick up, and every time you challenge your balance, and every meal that provides your body with the nutrients it needs.
00:16:28.080 --> 00:16:29.759
All of those things add up.
00:16:29.919 --> 00:16:34.080
And I think it's one of the most empowering things about getting older.
00:16:34.320 --> 00:16:41.919
We may not be able to control everything that happens to our bodies, but we have more influence than we sometimes realize.
00:16:42.159 --> 00:16:48.559
So go find the real, check out the 10-day bone density challenge, and most importantly, use your body.
00:16:48.720 --> 00:16:54.799
Move it, load it, strengthen it, feed it, and let's keep those bones strong for all the things we still want to do.
00:16:54.879 --> 00:16:58.320
I'll see you next time on the Spandex and Wine podcast.
