5
00:00:17.559 --> 00:00:20.329
right now with Jana Keller, and we're going to talk
6
00:00:20.449 --> 00:00:23.289
about Grandma Lou's Halo. And would you say it's like
7
00:00:23.309 --> 00:00:25.969
a Halloween party, or how would you refer to this event?
8
00:00:26.510 --> 00:00:28.030
It's almost kind of like a festival.
9
00:00:28.620 --> 00:00:30.719
And this is something that your family has been doing
10
00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:33.640
for a little while. Let's talk about the background of
11
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:35.039
this event. Then we're going to tell them how they
12
00:00:35.060 --> 00:00:36.560
can be a part of it this year. But where
13
00:00:36.579 --> 00:00:37.840
did all of this get started?
14
00:00:38.219 --> 00:00:42.409
Well, you know, my mom really loved Halloween. And she
15
00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:46.189
instilled that love of Halloween into her children and grandchildren.
16
00:00:46.210 --> 00:00:51.350
The best way to describe her is a spunky prankster.
17
00:00:52.469 --> 00:00:55.070
She would dress up as a witch and come to
18
00:00:55.130 --> 00:00:58.369
my classroom as the room mother and bring everybody inside.
19
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:05.390
Halloween cutout cookies. And she passed away in 2020. And
20
00:01:05.489 --> 00:01:09.530
we do this in her memory. We created Grandma Lou's Hollow.
21
00:01:09.590 --> 00:01:13.049
She actually got to come and see it back when
22
00:01:13.090 --> 00:01:17.409
we did it in the garage. We started this in 2017.
23
00:01:17.409 --> 00:01:20.750
So this is our 10th Halloween this year. And like
24
00:01:20.810 --> 00:01:24.340
I said, we started in the garage with maybe 100 guests.
25
00:01:25.140 --> 00:01:29.340
And when COVID hit in 2020, We wanted to keep
26
00:01:29.409 --> 00:01:33.310
it safe. So we turned it into a drive-by and
27
00:01:33.670 --> 00:01:36.010
where you could just drive by and open your window
28
00:01:36.170 --> 00:01:39.090
and we'd hand you candy. And we were amazed because
29
00:01:39.109 --> 00:01:41.849
we had about a thousand cars drive by our house
30
00:01:41.890 --> 00:01:44.829
that night. And so we kind of, we moved it
31
00:01:44.909 --> 00:01:48.370
out into the yard and have kept it. It's an
32
00:01:48.489 --> 00:01:51.409
interactive thing. You can just drive by in your car
33
00:01:51.469 --> 00:01:53.709
if you want, or if you get out of your
34
00:01:53.769 --> 00:01:57.140
car and want to check us out, We do a
35
00:01:57.219 --> 00:02:01.879
visual scavenger hunt. And once you've found all those items
36
00:02:02.120 --> 00:02:05.219
in the hunt, you can turn your sheet, your checklist
37
00:02:05.689 --> 00:02:08.050
off into us and we'll give you a little prize.
38
00:02:09.069 --> 00:02:12.669
We have all sorts of games for adults and for children.
39
00:02:14.389 --> 00:02:19.389
This year, we have some special entertainment. On Friday night,
40
00:02:19.490 --> 00:02:24.360
we're having the South Dakota Ghostbusters. And on Saturday night,
41
00:02:24.419 --> 00:02:28.580
Halloween itself, the Sioux Falls Sanderson sisters are going to
42
00:02:28.599 --> 00:02:32.780
be here. And both nights, we are going to feature
43
00:02:32.889 --> 00:02:37.870
a stilt-walking Frankenstein's monster. So we have lots of fun
44
00:02:37.969 --> 00:02:40.909
things planned for this year. But yeah, this all started
45
00:02:41.050 --> 00:02:45.719
just out of a memory of my mom and to
46
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:49.879
pass her love of Halloween on to the next generation.
47
00:02:50.689 --> 00:02:56.560
and into the community. She was very generous and community focused.
48
00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.219
And we want to do that, that same thing here
49
00:02:59.240 --> 00:03:03.189
at Grandma Lou's Hollow, which is why we keep our
50
00:03:03.219 --> 00:03:04.000
event free.
51
00:03:04.379 --> 00:03:05.830
I absolutely love that.
52
00:03:06.250 --> 00:03:10.250
Yeah. We want to provide a free, um, opportunity for,
53
00:03:10.349 --> 00:03:13.150
for people to come and not have to spend a
54
00:03:13.189 --> 00:03:16.530
lot of money. You can spend 10 minutes here. We've
55
00:03:16.569 --> 00:03:18.750
got people who spend up to an hour here, um,
56
00:03:20.250 --> 00:03:24.129
And we say that we scare to meet your needs.
57
00:03:24.629 --> 00:03:26.870
Like if you show up with a toddler and they're
58
00:03:26.889 --> 00:03:30.039
a little nervous, we want them to have fun. We
59
00:03:30.099 --> 00:03:34.120
want them to... we want them to love Halloween and
60
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:36.620
have it be a good thing. But if we get
61
00:03:36.659 --> 00:03:39.539
like some middle schoolers show up who think that they're
62
00:03:40.039 --> 00:03:42.460
all that, you know, we're going to try our best
63
00:03:42.500 --> 00:03:45.449
to give them a good scare, but mostly we're just,
64
00:03:45.509 --> 00:03:49.449
we're very family focused and we want the big people
65
00:03:49.629 --> 00:03:55.460
to have fun too. So that big people can have fun,
66
00:03:55.509 --> 00:03:58.860
have a good Halloween memory with their little people.
67
00:03:59.870 --> 00:04:02.280
I think it's really, really cool. And for folks that
68
00:04:02.310 --> 00:04:04.060
are not familiar with this, we're going to tell them
69
00:04:04.099 --> 00:04:05.439
where they can go and how they can be a
70
00:04:05.460 --> 00:04:08.419
part of it. Grandma Lou's, not Halloween. What is it?
71
00:04:08.439 --> 00:04:09.240
Grandma Lou's Hallow?
72
00:04:09.460 --> 00:04:14.280
Grandma Lou's Hallow, H-A-L-L-O-W. We do have a Facebook page
73
00:04:14.300 --> 00:04:16.959
that has all of our information on there, our hours
74
00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:20.040
and our theme. Our theme this year is Monster Mash,
75
00:04:20.540 --> 00:04:23.810
which is kind of like Grandma Lou's Hallow's greatest hits
76
00:04:23.879 --> 00:04:26.970
through the past 10 years. And it's kind of also
77
00:04:27.009 --> 00:04:30.709
a birthday party since this is our 10th year. My
78
00:04:30.810 --> 00:04:34.269
address is in my front yard. My address is at
79
00:04:34.269 --> 00:04:38.480
913 West 36th Street, and that is located in central
80
00:04:38.519 --> 00:04:39.000
Sioux Falls.
81
00:04:39.389 --> 00:04:41.949
That is awesome. And I put a link to the
82
00:04:42.069 --> 00:04:44.839
page on our Facebook page. So if you're looking for it,
83
00:04:45.420 --> 00:04:48.639
you can search facebook.com slash Sunny Radio. And I love
84
00:04:48.660 --> 00:04:50.740
that you're doing this to honor your mother. That's really cool.
85
00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:52.800
Thank you. And I do it. I do it mostly
86
00:04:52.839 --> 00:04:55.620
with my son and his wife and actually with my,
87
00:04:55.860 --> 00:04:59.699
this sounds weird, but with my ex-husband. And I have
88
00:04:59.740 --> 00:05:02.480
a really great team of volunteers. I have to give
89
00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:05.180
credit to my volunteers. I couldn't do this without them.
90
00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:08.079
They come and they help set everything up and pack
91
00:05:08.120 --> 00:05:11.709
everything away and interact with the crowd. And one of
92
00:05:11.750 --> 00:05:14.430
the also things that makes us different is that we
93
00:05:14.470 --> 00:05:18.709
have live actors that will interact with you. We don't
94
00:05:19.189 --> 00:05:22.350
have any animatronics or anything like that. This is just
95
00:05:23.750 --> 00:05:27.540
people being with other people and we try to keep
96
00:05:27.600 --> 00:05:28.800
it very community minded.
97
00:05:29.170 --> 00:05:30.970
Well, I think it's really cool. And how do you
98
00:05:30.990 --> 00:05:32.870
pay for this? Do you have sponsors that help pay
99
00:05:32.930 --> 00:05:34.410
for it? Or where does the money come from to
100
00:05:34.449 --> 00:05:35.610
buy the candy and all this stuff?
101
00:05:36.649 --> 00:05:40.589
We do accept donations. That helps us to keep going.
102
00:05:40.610 --> 00:05:44.670
And actually, on Saturday the 17th, that's the day that
103
00:05:44.709 --> 00:05:47.329
we're going to set up. We also, since we'll be
104
00:05:47.430 --> 00:05:49.870
outside in the front yard all day, if people want
105
00:05:49.889 --> 00:05:54.329
to drop off some candy, we'd appreciate any donations of
106
00:05:54.649 --> 00:05:57.649
candy if somebody wants to drop something off. That would
107
00:05:57.689 --> 00:06:00.769
be helpful. I also try to just keep it on
108
00:06:01.810 --> 00:06:04.750
a rummage hound. And so when I like to just
109
00:06:05.310 --> 00:06:07.610
rummage for my items and when I see something, I
110
00:06:08.060 --> 00:06:10.779
try to use my Halloween eye and go, how can
111
00:06:10.819 --> 00:06:13.939
I use this to make it look creepy? And so
112
00:06:14.120 --> 00:06:16.480
I make a lot of my own stuff. So the
113
00:06:16.819 --> 00:06:19.660
longer that I do this, the less it costs me,
114
00:06:19.699 --> 00:06:22.629
if that makes sense, because I already have a lot
115
00:06:22.670 --> 00:06:24.910
of things that are already made and I try to
116
00:06:25.050 --> 00:06:28.860
repurpose things and, um, So that's helpful.
117
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:31.420
That is very cool. And let's give the address one
118
00:06:31.459 --> 00:06:33.379
more time. I've shared it on Facebook. For folks that
119
00:06:33.399 --> 00:06:35.579
are not on Facebook, where do they go on the
120
00:06:35.639 --> 00:06:36.980
30th and 31st for this?
121
00:06:37.399 --> 00:06:39.120
I am at 913 West 36th Street.
122
00:06:41.939 --> 00:06:43.300
And like I said, I do have a link to
123
00:06:43.319 --> 00:06:45.959
the page on our Facebook page. And again, thank you
124
00:06:46.100 --> 00:06:48.040
so much for taking the time to chat. I really
125
00:06:48.079 --> 00:06:48.420
love this.
126
00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:51.259
Thank you, John. I appreciate the exposure and your time
127
00:06:51.300 --> 00:06:51.959
for the interview.
128
00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:54.430
Absolutely. You are doing the hard part. I'm doing the
129
00:06:54.459 --> 00:06:56.410
easy part. I'm just telling people what you guys are doing,
130
00:06:56.449 --> 00:06:58.389
and it's very, very cool. If you would like to
131
00:06:58.430 --> 00:07:00.189
learn more, I do have a link to it on
132
00:07:00.230 --> 00:07:05.470
our Facebook page, facebook.com slash Sunny Radio and facebook.com slash

Sioux Falls News.
134
00:07:06.790 --> 00:07:08.329
Something you should know.

00:02:02.120 --> 00:02:05.219
in the hunt, you can turn your sheet, your checklist
37
00:02:05.689 --> 00:02:08.050
off into us and we'll give you a little prize.
38
00:02:09.069 --> 00:02:12.669
We have all sorts of games for adults and for children.
39
00:02:14.389 --> 00:02:19.389
This year, we have some special entertainment. On Friday night,
40
00:02:19.490 --> 00:02:24.360
we're having the South Dakota Ghostbusters. And on Saturday night,
41
00:02:24.419 --> 00:02:28.580
Halloween itself, the Sioux Falls Sanderson sisters are going to
42
00:02:28.599 --> 00:02:32.780
be here. And both nights, we are going to feature
43
00:02:32.889 --> 00:02:37.870
a stilt-walking Frankenstein's monster. So we have lots of fun
44
00:02:37.969 --> 00:02:40.909
things planned for this year. But yeah, this all started
45
00:02:41.050 --> 00:02:45.719
just out of a memory of my mom and to
46
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:49.879
pass her love of Halloween on to the next generation.
47
00:02:50.689 --> 00:02:56.560
and into the community. She was very generous and community focused.
48
00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.219
And we want to do that, that same thing here
49
00:02:59.240 --> 00:03:03.189
at Grandma Lou's Hollow, which is why we keep our
50
00:03:03.219 --> 00:03:04.000
event free.
51
00:03:04.379 --> 00:03:05.830
I absolutely love that.
52
00:03:06.250 --> 00:03:10.250
Yeah. We want to provide a free, um, opportunity for,
53
00:03:10.349 --> 00:03:13.150
for people to come and not have to spend a
54
00:03:13.189 --> 00:03:16.530
lot of money. You can spend 10 minutes here. We've
55
00:03:16.569 --> 00:03:18.750
got people who spend up to an hour here, um,
56
00:03:20.250 --> 00:03:24.129
And we say that we scare to meet your needs.
57
00:03:24.629 --> 00:03:26.870
Like if you show up with a toddler and they're
58
00:03:26.889 --> 00:03:30.039
a little nervous, we want them to have fun. We
59
00:03:30.099 --> 00:03:34.120
want them to... we want them to love Halloween and
60
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:36.620
have it be a good thing. But if we get
61
00:03:36.659 --> 00:03:39.539
like some middle schoolers show up who think that they're
62
00:03:40.039 --> 00:03:42.460
all that, you know, we're going to try our best
63
00:03:42.500 --> 00:03:45.449
to give them a good scare, but mostly we're just,
64
00:03:45.509 --> 00:03:49.449
we're very family focused and we want the big people
65
00:03:49.629 --> 00:03:55.460
to have fun too. So that big people can have fun,
66
00:03:55.509 --> 00:03:58.860
have a good Halloween memory with their little people.
67
00:03:59.870 --> 00:04:02.280
I think it's really, really cool. And for folks that
68
00:04:02.310 --> 00:04:04.060
are not familiar with this, we're going to tell them
69
00:04:04.099 --> 00:04:05.439
where they can go and how they can be a
70
00:04:05.460 --> 00:04:08.419
part of it. Grandma Lou's, not Halloween. What is it?
71
00:04:08.439 --> 00:04:09.240
Grandma Lou's Hallow?
72
00:04:09.460 --> 00:04:14.280
Grandma Lou's Hallow, H-A-L-L-O-W. We do have a Facebook page
73
00:04:14.300 --> 00:04:16.959
that has all of our information on there, our hours
74
00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:20.040
and our theme. Our theme this year is Monster Mash,
75
00:04:20.540 --> 00:04:23.810
which is kind of like Grandma Lou's Hallow's greatest hits
76
00:04:23.879 --> 00:04:26.970
through the past 10 years. And it's kind of also
77
00:04:27.009 --> 00:04:30.709
a birthday party since this is our 10th year. My
78
00:04:30.810 --> 00:04:34.269
address is in my front yard. My address is at
79
00:04:34.269 --> 00:04:38.480
913 West 36th Street, and that is located in central
80
00:04:38.519 --> 00:04:39.000
Sioux Falls.
81
00:04:39.389 --> 00:04:41.949
That is awesome. And I put a link to the
82
00:04:42.069 --> 00:04:44.839
page on our Facebook page. So if you're looking for it,
83
00:04:45.420 --> 00:04:48.639
you can search facebook.com slash Sunny Radio. And I love
84
00:04:48.660 --> 00:04:50.740
that you're doing this to honor your mother. That's really cool.
85
00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:52.800
Thank you. And I do it. I do it mostly
86
00:04:52.839 --> 00:04:55.620
with my son and his wife and actually with my,
87
00:04:55.860 --> 00:04:59.699
this sounds weird, but with my ex-husband. And I have
88
00:04:59.740 --> 00:05:02.480
a really great team of volunteers. I have to give
89
00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:05.180
credit to my volunteers. I couldn't do this without them.
90
00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:08.079
They come and they help set everything up and pack
91
00:05:08.120 --> 00:05:11.709
everything away and interact with the crowd. And one of
92
00:05:11.750 --> 00:05:14.430
the also things that makes us different is that we
93
00:05:14.470 --> 00:05:18.709
have live actors that will interact with you. We don't
94
00:05:19.189 --> 00:05:22.350
have any animatronics or anything like that. This is just
95
00:05:23.750 --> 00:05:27.540
people being with other people and we try to keep
96
00:05:27.600 --> 00:05:28.800
it very community minded.
97
00:05:29.170 --> 00:05:30.970
Well, I think it's really cool. And how do you
98
00:05:30.990 --> 00:05:32.870
pay for this? Do you have sponsors that help pay
99
00:05:32.930 --> 00:05:34.410
for it? Or where does the money come from to
100
00:05:34.449 --> 00:05:35.610
buy the candy and all this stuff?
101
00:05:36.649 --> 00:05:40.589
We do accept donations. That helps us to keep going.
102
00:05:40.610 --> 00:05:44.670
And actually, on Saturday the 17th, that's the day that
103
00:05:44.709 --> 00:05:47.329
we're going to set up. We also, since we'll be
104
00:05:47.430 --> 00:05:49.870
outside in the front yard all day, if people want
105
00:05:49.889 --> 00:05:54.329
to drop off some candy, we'd appreciate any donations of
106
00:05:54.649 --> 00:05:57.649
candy if somebody wants to drop something off. That would
107
00:05:57.689 --> 00:06:00.769
be helpful. I also try to just keep it on
108
00:06:01.810 --> 00:06:04.750
a rummage hound. And so when I like to just
109
00:06:05.310 --> 00:06:07.610
rummage for my items and when I see something, I
110
00:06:08.060 --> 00:06:10.779
try to use my Halloween eye and go, how can
111
00:06:10.819 --> 00:06:13.939
I use this to make it look creepy? And so
112
00:06:14.120 --> 00:06:16.480
I make a lot of my own stuff. So the
113
00:06:16.819 --> 00:06:19.660
longer that I do this, the less it costs me,
114
00:06:19.699 --> 00:06:22.629
if that makes sense, because I already have a lot
115
00:06:22.670 --> 00:06:24.910
of things that are already made and I try to
116
00:06:25.050 --> 00:06:28.860
repurpose things and, um, So that's helpful.
117
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:31.420
That is very cool. And let's give the address one
118
00:06:31.459 --> 00:06:33.379
more time. I've shared it on Facebook. For folks that
119
00:06:33.399 --> 00:06:35.579
are not on Facebook, where do they go on the
120
00:06:35.639 --> 00:06:36.980
30th and 31st for this?
121
00:06:37.399 --> 00:06:39.120
I am at 913 West 36th Street.
122
00:06:41.939 --> 00:06:43.300
And like I said, I do have a link to
123
00:06:43.319 --> 00:06:45.959
the page on our Facebook page. And again, thank you
124
00:06:46.100 --> 00:06:48.040
so much for taking the time to chat. I really
125
00:06:48.079 --> 00:06:48.420
love this.
126
00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:51.259
Thank you, John. I appreciate the exposure and your time
127
00:06:51.300 --> 00:06:51.959
for the interview.
128
00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:54.430
Absolutely. You are doing the hard part. I'm doing the
129
00:06:54.459 --> 00:06:56.410
easy part. I'm just telling people what you guys are doing,
130
00:06:56.449 --> 00:06:58.389
and it's very, very cool. If you would like to
131
00:06:58.430 --> 00:07:00.189
learn more, I do have a link to it on
132
00:07:00.230 --> 00:07:05.470
our Facebook page, facebook.com slash Sunny Radio and facebook.com slash
133
00:07:05.670 --> 00:07:06.529
Sioux Falls News.
134
00:07:06.790 --> 00:07:08.329
Something you should know.
