ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Don't Look In Antique Mirrors The chilling reason mercury-backed glass was considered a portal to the abyss.
Forbidden history meets occult investigation: Mercury-backed mirrors weren't just antique curiosities—they were suppressed technology. Tracy explores why Aztec obsidian mirrors, Chinese bagua mirrors, and John Dee's scrying tools vanished from institutional history. What made reflective technology so threatening to power structures? Urban legend analysis reveals the pattern of hidden knowledge, institutional erasure, and recurring human behavior across cultures.

Tracy explores the taboo and alleged suppression surrounding mercury-backed antique mirrors, linking global mirror lore (Aztec obsidian mirrors of Tezcatlipoca, Chinese bagua mirrors, John Dee’s scrying) to claims that mercury-silver reflective surfaces produce a resonance “doorway” used in catoptromancy. It recounts Venice’s Murano mirror-making secrecy enforced by the Council of Ten, Versailles’ Hall of Mirrors built on smuggled expertise, and a purported 1920s Soviet finding that reflection “lag” increases when a human observes, later recalled and buried. The script cites perceptual phenomena (Ganzfeld effect, strange face illusion), a Vatican “speculum prohibitus” archive section, Sister Margarita’s 1687 foretold death, NASA contractor interest in the 1990s, Liebig’s 1835 silvering shift, and an alleged classified 1974 East German experiment ending in psychosis and mirror destruction, arguing the real threat was proof that time and observation allow access to futures.
