00:00:00.400 --> 00:00:10.880
What I'm seeing in my coaching practice is that the things that are keeping clients stuck are those deeper inner thoughts of why can't I drink like everyone else?
00:00:11.119 --> 00:00:18.079
That then leads to deeper thoughts of and beliefs that I'm not good enough or there's something wrong with me.
00:00:18.239 --> 00:00:22.480
And that can lead to drinking to numb that deep, hurty place.
00:00:22.960 --> 00:00:27.120
And a lot of times coaches jump to, oh, let's rewire that thought.
00:00:27.359 --> 00:00:28.239
Is it true?
00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:29.280
Et cetera.
00:00:29.440 --> 00:00:36.799
But I believe we're missing a crucial step when it comes to this deep inner work that I can't wait to share with you.
00:00:37.039 --> 00:00:46.320
Welcome to Sober and Lit, the podcast for women who want to get sober, stay sober, and live a life that's way more lit than it ever was with wine.

We're your hosts, Ruby and Susan, two alcohol freedom coaches keeping it real with stories, tools, and zero judgment.
00:00:53.759 --> 00:00:57.600
Whether you're sober, curious, or all in, you're in the right place.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:00.560
Let's feel lit, alcohol free.
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:04.959
Welcome to the Sober and Lit Podcast.
00:01:05.359 --> 00:01:08.959
We are so excited to be with you today, Ruby and I.
00:01:09.439 --> 00:01:17.760
Oh my gosh, here we are in the middle of our third season of reclining every single week.
00:01:18.239 --> 00:01:19.439
An episode.
00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:28.319
And it's just such an honor and a privilege to be able to share our coaching practices, our tips, our alcohol-free life with you.
00:01:28.560 --> 00:01:34.799
So today I wanted to talk about something that I'm seeing a lot in my coaching practice.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:39.920
And I'm so when I'm working with clients, we do deep work together.
00:01:40.159 --> 00:01:56.239
And I notice even with myself, when I get coached by someone, when we just jump to let's rewire that thought or belief, without this step that I'm going to share with you, it feels it feels hard sometimes.
00:01:56.319 --> 00:01:57.920
It feels like cognitive dissonance.
00:01:58.079 --> 00:02:06.959
So if the thought or belief that is keeping us stuck in our drinking is one of those deeper thoughts, those deep, hurdy thoughts.
00:02:07.280 --> 00:02:10.159
Mine is, I'm not doing it right, I'm doing it wrong.
00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:11.280
There's something wrong with me.
00:02:11.439 --> 00:02:12.159
I'm not good enough.
00:02:12.319 --> 00:02:17.520
Those are the ones that are the refrain that always come back to when I'm feeling that deep, hurdy place.
00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:22.400
And I'm I know how my hurty place feels now because I've been doing this work.
00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:25.680
And it and honestly, it's lifetime work, right?
00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:29.599
Those still sometimes come up, that that inner critic.
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:38.719
And there's definitely different approaches out there, like banish that inner critic or fight the fear or you know, uh extinguish the fear.
00:02:39.039 --> 00:02:41.360
But I just don't think that works.
00:02:41.680 --> 00:02:50.080
I think that the rewiring process definitely does work, and that work really matters, but there is a gap here.
00:02:50.240 --> 00:03:05.280
When we ask our mind to do this cognitive work with a feeling before that feeling's been acknowledged, that causes cognitive dissonance because our subconscious brain is still feeling that feeling.
00:03:05.439 --> 00:03:07.120
It's kind of like gaslighting.
00:03:07.360 --> 00:03:17.039
And maybe an analogy is it's trying to reason with a crying child before you've knelt down and hugged them first and calmed and soothed them, right?
00:03:17.439 --> 00:03:42.719
So the step that we're missing, I use the word honoring, and honoring how we're feeling in that moment is not necessarily agreeing with the thought I'm not good enough or saying that that is true, but it's acknowledging that hurty part of you that is carrying that belief that is real and actually has been trying to protect you.
00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:48.159
So skipping this step really creates resistance.
00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:53.199
And then the the rewiring questions can feel like you're gaslighting yourself.
00:03:53.439 --> 00:03:57.759
If you haven't first said, I see you and this hurts.
00:03:58.560 --> 00:03:59.439
What do you think about that?
00:03:59.840 --> 00:04:00.319
Validating.
00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:01.360
Yeah, validating.
00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:02.560
Validating.
00:04:02.800 --> 00:04:15.360
Yeah, I'm trying to think of I love this honoring idea and honoring and acknowledging and validating the actual feelings that you're having because they're true and real.
00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:18.399
And we don't want to just say the opposite's true.
00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:19.680
Um Right.
00:04:19.920 --> 00:04:20.319
Yeah.
00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:22.720
I guess there's like all the different types.
00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:27.439
There's like the the little thoughts that you have, and then the bigger beliefs.
00:04:27.600 --> 00:04:33.680
And then I think what you're talking about, though, is what I I call like the tree trunk deepest belief.
00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:37.199
Like I am broken, or there's something wrong with me.
00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:38.800
Or what did you say?
00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:40.319
Like I'm unlovable.
00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:41.920
You know, that we're not good enough.
00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:42.959
I'm not good enough.
00:04:43.120 --> 00:05:06.160
Yeah, these are these are like I think with almost everyone we come across, or at least me, that I come across, it feels like we can we keep working and working to this like really deep, you know, um, you know, I'm I'm a broken person or something's wrong with me, or I, you know, and it's just and it and then it comes back to this little you mentioned a little kid, right?
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:09.040
It it usually it started from childhood.
00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:09.600
Yes.
00:05:10.079 --> 00:05:14.639
So I think you're spot on with this, and I can't wait to hear what you're gonna say.
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:30.720
Well, so why why I'm even bringing this up is clients get, you know, we get really frustrated when we know all the things, we know the science, we have tactics, and yet we still find ourselves getting stuck in the drinking pattern, and it can be so frustrating.
00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:38.480
And sometimes when I talk to clients, they're like, Well, I just feel like I'm I'm left out, or I feel like sometimes I'm drinking to belong.
00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:44.560
And and then they're go, but that's stupid, or I know that's not true, or I know I can have fun without drinking.
00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:52.319
You know, it's like, and they just get so mad at themselves, but really underneath that belonging is where those deeper things lie.
00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:58.000
And so we do have to do a little bit of digging there to get to, but why are you drinking to belong?
00:05:58.160 --> 00:05:59.519
Why do you feel left out?
00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:04.720
And a lot of times we drink in order to belong, right?
00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:10.959
In order to feel like we fit in and andor to numb that hurtdy place.
00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:22.160
So I see both of those, you know, just it's just the pain of that feeling of I'm not good enough is so strong that our subconscious brain just goes to soothe that.
00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:26.399
And the only tool our subconscious brain has is alcohol because it's worked, right?
00:06:26.560 --> 00:06:28.800
And so it wants to just get that immediate relief.
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:33.759
And so this deeper work is part of the work that I do with my one-on-one coaching practice.
00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:49.360
And I feel like this is just divine work to work so closely with these women and to really help them, you know, get through those layers and get to what that nut is, and then to to be able to have this practice.
00:06:49.439 --> 00:06:53.920
And I learned this through my sacred depths life coaching that I went through.
00:06:54.160 --> 00:06:57.839
And I just when it just felt so right when I heard it.
00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:01.920
And I've been, you know, using this in my coaching practice ever since.
00:07:02.079 --> 00:07:12.879
And I just, again, I feel like it's this missing step from jumping to let's rewire that thought to wait, let's stop and honor the the you that is feeling that.
00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:18.399
So again, we're not saying that the thought is true and we're not validating the thought.
00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:21.199
We are just honoring the feeling.
00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:22.160
The feeling.
00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:22.560
Yeah.
00:07:22.800 --> 00:07:28.639
And this reminds me a lot of like rain meditation that you and I did for years together.
00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:34.480
Yeah, that nurturing, like nurturing and honoring and acknowledging.
00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:35.120
Yeah.
00:07:35.519 --> 00:07:36.160
So yeah.
00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:37.040
What does it look like?
00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:37.759
Yeah.
00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:44.959
Well, so what it looks like in practice is just allowing the feeling to be fully felt without rushing it.
00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:53.360
And then this next step is just acknowledging, yes, and then offering compassion and love to that part of yourself.
00:07:53.519 --> 00:07:56.399
We cannot hate ourselves to a better place.
00:07:56.560 --> 00:08:00.160
So a lot of times we should, and I should know better.
00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:02.879
And, you know, I know I need to change this thought.
00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:03.439
You know what I mean?
00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:06.800
I know I shouldn't drink to belong, or I know I don't need to, da da da, you know what I mean?
00:08:06.879 --> 00:08:08.959
And that's just beating ourselves up, right?
00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:18.480
So if we just stop and offer compassion and even love to that part of yourself the way you would to a friend or younger version of you.
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:27.120
And what I bring in if I'm working with a Christian client is we bring in the Holy Spirit and say, you know, what would allow that place of you to be healed a little?
00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:29.279
I'm putting my hands on my heart.
00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:36.320
I often say, you know, what place your hands on the place that where you feel the hurt from this and just press some love into that.
00:08:36.559 --> 00:08:42.639
And imagine, you know, God's love healing that place and ministering to that place.
00:08:42.799 --> 00:08:44.399
What would Jesus want to tell you?
00:08:44.559 --> 00:08:46.799
You know, that's some of the stuff that I do with Christian clients.
00:08:46.960 --> 00:08:48.240
I work with all kinds of clients.
00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:50.879
If you're not a Christian, then it's just applying love.
00:08:51.039 --> 00:08:53.600
We have everything we need inside us.
00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:56.000
We don't really need that outside substance.
00:08:56.159 --> 00:09:09.759
So if we can just take a moment and acknowledge, name, notice, and allow the feelings and press some love into that and compassion, feel it, and then go into okay, well, is that really true?
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:13.200
And then, you know, the external experience, the internal experience.
00:09:13.360 --> 00:09:19.039
And then, you know, a lot of times we can't completely turn that around to, no, I am enough, you know, like yeah.
00:09:19.279 --> 00:09:22.639
So we usually work on a latter thought or what really is true.
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:31.360
And the things that women come up with after that moment of allowing that a little bit of healing are truly remarkable.
00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:35.919
And it's just, it's again, it's divine work.
00:09:36.080 --> 00:09:43.279
It's divine work then to hear that um they come up with their own turnaround, they come up with their own truth in that moment.
00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:45.919
And then the practice is to walk that truth out.
00:09:46.080 --> 00:09:51.600
The practice is to use that as like your mantra, to use that, you know, put legs to it.
00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:58.559
It's like that's a little breakthrough, but action steps are what create transformation from a breakthrough.
00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:03.919
And so just reminding ourselves, do some journaling around this experience.
00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:10.960
And again, it's not the last time you're gonna have that feeling because I'm still struggling with sometimes feeling like I'm not good enough.
00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:13.279
But I recognize it, yeah.
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:17.120
But this the awareness, though, where we go, okay, wait, what's going on?
00:10:17.279 --> 00:10:23.039
It's a red flag for us to calm down and apply that nurturing and go, okay, what's really true?
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:28.159
I mean, in all or nothing thinking, and to continue to do that that healing work.
00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:28.559
Yeah.
00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:42.159
So many people that that come that have become addicted to alcohol or have alcohol use disorder have these deep hurts from oftentimes childhood, teenage childhood or very young.
00:10:42.320 --> 00:10:43.279
It just depends.
00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:50.399
But it it's very so if you were struggling with this and you have this deep hurt, if like, you know, we're talking to you, you're like, oh yeah.
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:51.519
I mean, you're not alone.
00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:56.480
It's it feels like so many people have had something, something happen.
00:10:56.639 --> 00:11:04.559
So it's not what's wrong with you, it's what's happened to you, and then acknowledge it, validate it, feel it.
00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:06.159
And I love this honoring.
00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:07.279
Yeah, I love that word.
00:11:07.440 --> 00:11:07.759
I know.
00:11:07.919 --> 00:11:13.759
It just feels so like honor where you've been, honor how you feel before we try to change it.
00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:14.240
Yeah.
00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:18.240
And it's it's not about staying stuck in the feeling.
00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:23.679
So it is a bridge that actually makes the rewiring stick.
00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:30.960
So if you have done some acts on your own, act technique, or some thought turnarounds on your own, and you're just like, why aren't these sticking?
00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:34.320
Like I know I did this, and then you find yourself not really believing it.
00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:43.759
Maybe there's some honoring there that needs to happen because I truly believe this is the step that helps make the rewiring actually stick.
00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:46.240
And it's little ladder steps.
00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:51.919
Again, we're not going from I'm not good enough to I'm good enough, you know, like that's not this process.
00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:53.360
I could tell you that for sure.
00:11:53.519 --> 00:12:06.320
You know, sometimes with a thought like, I like the taste of alcohol to I don't like the taste of alcohol or that kind of thing, you can do a complete turnaround and boom, and that thought, you know, that belief is just gone, you know, through your experience.
00:12:06.480 --> 00:12:09.600
But these deeper things really do, they are levels.
00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:12.720
They are, yeah, you know and it's lifetime work, like you said.
00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:18.960
It's lifetime work because uh it just keeps showing up again and again in different ways.
00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:30.720
But what I also want to share is that this is a process when you work with a coach that you start to empower yourself and love yourself.
00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:38.799
It truly is a like a self-love, self-kindness journey where you really can transform.
00:12:39.519 --> 00:12:45.279
And just life is so much lighter and it's it's just not quite as heavy.
00:12:45.440 --> 00:12:52.320
All the things that happen every day, you just can handle everything just slightly better because maybe it's that belief too.
00:12:52.399 --> 00:12:58.480
Like when you work with Coach Susan and you're you're finding that divine, the divine.
00:12:58.720 --> 00:13:05.200
You know, I speak more of like the universe, that the universe has your back, kind of like, or that Jesus has your back, right?
00:13:05.360 --> 00:13:08.720
That yeah, that you can find that and have that lightness.
00:13:08.960 --> 00:13:10.240
Yeah, yeah.
00:13:10.879 --> 00:13:15.279
And at first, I think that definitely you can start doing this work on your own.
00:13:15.440 --> 00:13:25.120
But at first, it's really hard to do this deeper work on your own because it could be really disorienting to sit with a painful belief instead of wanting to immediately fix it.
00:13:25.440 --> 00:13:29.440
And most of us don't really have a practice of doing that really safely.
00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:38.720
We want, you know, we want to rush past the discomfort, straight to the numbing, or straight to fixing the thought or beating ourselves up because that's just what we've done in the past.
00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:40.320
You know, at least I did.
00:13:40.559 --> 00:13:42.960
Or just like, okay, get over it, Susan, like move on.
00:13:43.039 --> 00:13:43.919
Like, what's wrong with you?
00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:45.039
You know, let's not wallow.
00:13:45.200 --> 00:14:06.960
And a coach can really help you stay in the honoring long enough for it to actually land and just help you work through it and help you create a pattern or a practice that you can use on your own going forward, especially once you're able to use it around your drinking and get some traction around your drinking.
00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:11.039
Then you can use it when it comes up for other areas in your life.
00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:23.519
But again, like I've talked about previously, when we use alcohol to numb these herty feelings, to use it as a coping mechanism or medicinal purposes.
00:14:23.600 --> 00:14:28.960
You know, that's what we're using it for in those moments of those deep, hurdy beliefs and feelings about ourselves.
00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:31.120
It's duly reinforcing.
00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:36.799
It not only brings us comfort and numbs, but it also gives us that big reward.
00:14:37.039 --> 00:14:41.440
And so it, these are the sticky parts of addiction, really.
00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:51.360
This is, again, why we can go into alcohol use disorder a little bit faster when we are numbing these deep-seated feelings.
00:14:51.600 --> 00:14:53.919
And so that can be tricky and hard.
00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:59.440
And so working with someone can really help this process go more smoothly and help you really get some traction.
00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:11.919
And once you get traction, I'm telling you, these are the biggest things that once you can work on your drinking to a point where you get some momentum and you've worked on some of these deep-seated feelings and beliefs, then you just take off.
00:15:12.159 --> 00:15:13.840
You just, you know, you take off.
00:15:14.159 --> 00:15:16.399
My husband's like, you have a terrible business model.
00:15:16.559 --> 00:15:21.279
Once people, once people, if people are successful in working with you, they don't need you anymore.
00:15:21.440 --> 00:15:23.360
And I'm like, yeah, I know.
00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:27.679
But that's okay because it's not really a business, it's more of a calling.
00:15:27.840 --> 00:15:30.399
And when you see these people get free, right?
00:15:30.799 --> 00:15:33.279
And go off and do amazing things.
00:15:33.440 --> 00:15:37.039
It is the best feeling, is the best feeling.
00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:41.519
When I end a coaching session and I'm like, wow, we did some deep work here.
00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:45.360
Wow, this client really made some progress here.
00:15:45.759 --> 00:15:48.399
It is the best feeling in the world.
00:15:49.120 --> 00:15:52.000
It's it's like a feeling of love for me.
00:15:52.159 --> 00:15:57.759
Um, like deep love and gratitude when I work with women.
00:15:57.919 --> 00:16:06.480
Yeah, that feeling and that that shift when they when they when they come to a call and they're like, and oftentimes they notice it after too, not even during.
00:16:06.639 --> 00:16:15.440
They'll be like, you know, you'll have a good session, but then they come back the next week and they're like, My gosh, I had the most massive shift after our session.
00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:25.120
And then they explain how they just like last night she said, I feel so much better and I have agency on my life.
00:16:25.279 --> 00:16:26.799
And I was just like, wow.
00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:29.120
You know, and she goes, It's the first time ever.
00:16:29.279 --> 00:16:37.519
And I was like, Yeah, it's just, and it's these little shifts around what you're talking about, honoring, honoring.
00:16:37.679 --> 00:16:38.960
Yeah, we had a hard childhood.
00:16:39.120 --> 00:16:41.200
Maybe that if that if that's the thing.
00:16:41.519 --> 00:16:42.159
Yeah, yeah.
00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:45.279
And it's really that's you know, that's not therapy, right?
00:16:45.440 --> 00:16:50.960
Because we're take we're we're taking where you are now and then moving forward.
00:16:51.039 --> 00:16:53.279
And therapy is going back and looking at these.
00:16:53.360 --> 00:16:56.480
And so maybe it works in tandem with therapy.
00:16:56.559 --> 00:17:00.240
I have a lot of clients that are in therapy to work through some of these childhood traumas.
00:17:00.720 --> 00:17:08.400
That's out of my scope, but working with me around those thoughts and beliefs around your drinking as a drinking coach.
00:17:08.480 --> 00:17:12.799
You know, I have a lot of clients whose therapists are so glad they're working with me.
00:17:13.200 --> 00:17:26.559
I know they're drinking, you know, because sometimes a lot of therapists don't feel qualified necessarily to work around addiction, to work around, and and I use the word addiction with a little A, you know what I mean?
00:17:26.640 --> 00:17:29.759
But again, we always talk about alcohol is an addictive substance.
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:33.920
It is an alcohol-use disorder on a spectrum.
00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:37.440
And I know we don't like that word, but it is addictive.
00:17:37.519 --> 00:17:41.200
And when we are caught in that cycle, we are caught in a cycle of addiction.
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:42.960
Just to be honest about it.
00:17:43.200 --> 00:17:48.880
Yeah, and addiction, it's just a habit that you it causes you harm.
00:17:49.039 --> 00:17:51.359
You know it's harmful and you still do it anyway.
00:17:51.680 --> 00:18:02.240
So I mean, I mean, I guess, yeah, that word doesn't bother me very much because I know I'm addicted to all kinds of things like my phone, and I know it's not great for me, you know.
00:18:02.400 --> 00:18:10.880
But so it's it's it's like you know it's harmful, but you still do it anyway because of the cravings or because of the dopamine hit.
00:18:11.039 --> 00:18:11.759
The dopamine hit.
00:18:12.400 --> 00:18:12.720
Exactly.
00:18:13.119 --> 00:18:13.599
The reward.
00:18:13.680 --> 00:18:15.440
It's not you, it's alcohol.
00:18:15.519 --> 00:18:16.240
You know what I mean?
00:18:16.319 --> 00:18:18.559
So it's not you, it is alcohol.
00:18:18.640 --> 00:18:20.079
It's an addictive substance.
00:18:20.240 --> 00:18:23.839
Again, it gives you relief and reward at the same time.
00:18:24.079 --> 00:18:26.400
That makes it doubly addictive.
00:18:27.039 --> 00:18:31.839
And your brain starts to believe you need it to survive, just like food and water.
00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:51.680
And so this process is retraining our brain around that, but we can't do that unless we're honoring those deep-seated feelings and beliefs that we were using alcohol to numb and start to heal them by uh recognizing them and and listening for what they want to tell us sometimes.
00:18:52.480 --> 00:18:56.240
Yeah, you know, what wisdom they have, those feelings have for us.
00:18:56.400 --> 00:18:57.839
They just want to be acknowledged.
00:18:58.000 --> 00:18:58.400
Yeah.
00:18:58.640 --> 00:18:59.119
Mm-hmm.
00:18:59.359 --> 00:19:08.640
And oftentimes in in coaching sessions, I think women just want to be heard and share.
00:19:08.799 --> 00:19:17.039
And oftentimes just saying the words and explaining their feelings and then having a coach.
00:19:17.279 --> 00:19:19.519
Because we're we are different than a therapist.
00:19:19.599 --> 00:19:21.519
We can say, I get you, I've been there.
00:19:21.839 --> 00:19:26.000
And we can we get you, and we've been there, you know, for for a lot of this.
00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:27.920
So, and that's important.
00:19:28.160 --> 00:19:30.720
And I just I really feel honored too.
00:19:31.039 --> 00:19:40.160
I love that word, when some someone, a client will say, I've never been able to share this with anybody else on the planet, but I trust you and I'm gonna share this with you.
00:19:40.400 --> 00:19:44.559
And then it's it's an honor to hold space.
00:19:44.880 --> 00:19:53.119
It is, yes, it is an honor, it is divine to hold space and and to have someone let you into their life in such a deep way.
00:19:53.279 --> 00:19:55.519
And I don't take that lightly, you know.
00:19:56.960 --> 00:19:57.839
Yeah, I know.
00:19:58.240 --> 00:20:14.799
So you're you're so yeah, so my so what I want to just urge you is if you're in this place and you realize that you keep going back to it and something deeper is keeping you stuck, I just urge you to reach out to either Ruby or I and and book an appointment.
00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:17.680
It is scary at first, you know.
00:20:17.839 --> 00:20:20.640
You could have a vulnerability hangover around it.
00:20:20.799 --> 00:20:21.359
I get it.
00:20:21.440 --> 00:20:26.319
It's it's a lot to reach out about this, but both Ruby and I are super gentle.
00:20:26.559 --> 00:20:28.400
I think you will feel comfortable.
00:20:28.559 --> 00:20:37.200
And let's just explore this a little bit and see if we can get you some relief and traction around some of these deeper things that may be keeping you stuck.
00:20:37.519 --> 00:20:38.079
All right.
00:20:38.319 --> 00:20:43.359
Well, so Ruby, this is our listener's favorite part of the podcast.
00:20:43.599 --> 00:20:46.480
What are you doing in your life to feel lit?
00:20:47.920 --> 00:20:48.960
A great question.
00:20:49.039 --> 00:20:54.720
And I, when we were preparing for this podcast episode, I was like, oh, I I don't know.
00:20:54.880 --> 00:20:59.920
Because right now, you guys, listeners, I am packing and moving my house.
00:21:00.079 --> 00:21:04.319
So yeah, I'm a little bit uh busy and a little bit stressed out.
00:21:04.559 --> 00:21:05.920
So, but what am I doing?
00:21:06.079 --> 00:21:07.039
I am still doing this.
00:21:07.200 --> 00:21:09.440
I discovered this app.
00:21:09.759 --> 00:21:14.799
It's called Merlin Bird ID, and it's a free app.
00:21:14.960 --> 00:21:17.359
I recommend it to everyone you're gonna get addicted to.
00:21:17.440 --> 00:21:20.319
Maybe or addicted is the wrong word because it's so fun and beautiful.
00:21:20.559 --> 00:21:27.839
But what it is, is it's a little app where you record live bird sounds.
00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:32.960
So every morning, I I kid you not, every single morning, it's a way to get out.
00:21:33.440 --> 00:21:39.279
And I hit record, and what's so fun about it is I'm really listening and learning.
00:21:39.440 --> 00:21:44.240
So as birds are singing, chirping, it starts to identify them.
00:21:44.400 --> 00:21:46.880
So all of a sudden I've got, I'm gonna pull one up.
00:21:47.119 --> 00:21:52.720
One day I had 17 different birds in one minute.
00:21:53.200 --> 00:21:59.279
So think about it, it's just like it sounds like a symphony when I wake up and go out on my front porch.
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:13.119
And yeah, so then it you can click to so as they're chirping, as like it's noticing one or the other, you can start to really so now I know that that's a hawk, that's a crow, that's a robin.
00:22:13.359 --> 00:22:18.400
Like I'm starting to really learn and it gives you information about the birds.
00:22:18.559 --> 00:22:28.960
So this the day there was 17, which was the most, there was woodpeckers, goose speak, wrens, swallows, another woodpecker, pecker, or another woodpecker.
00:22:29.359 --> 00:22:37.599
It gives you all the different types crows, hawks, sparrows, robin, peewees, tohis, finch.
00:22:37.920 --> 00:22:44.480
I mean it's just and then there's owls, and it'll it'll hear the, you know, the the I have turkeys too.
00:22:44.640 --> 00:22:46.160
So all of this is happening.
00:22:46.240 --> 00:22:48.000
And then I can do it at different times of the day.
00:22:48.079 --> 00:22:49.920
Sometimes I do it in the afternoon or the evening.
00:22:50.079 --> 00:22:52.240
Seems like the mornings and the evenings are the best.
00:22:52.400 --> 00:23:00.799
Like if you want to, but it's just I just it's like a morning kind of ritual, and the birds are out there when it's still kind of dark, you guys.
00:23:01.039 --> 00:23:02.480
And it's like dawn.
00:23:02.960 --> 00:23:05.599
It's like still dark and almost dawn.
00:23:06.079 --> 00:23:09.599
And it's so it's so much fun.
00:23:09.680 --> 00:23:11.759
And I think you can take this all over the world.
00:23:11.839 --> 00:23:14.000
So, like, you know, I'm planning to go.
00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:16.480
Well, I'm gonna go to Hawaii in October.
00:23:16.880 --> 00:23:19.680
Yeah, which you don't know that yet, but I'll tell you more later.
00:23:19.839 --> 00:23:26.240
But yeah, I'm gonna so I want to take this like with me wherever I travel and see which kind of birds are showing up.
00:23:26.559 --> 00:23:28.720
And anyway, I recommend this.
00:23:28.799 --> 00:23:29.680
It's really fun.
00:23:29.839 --> 00:23:33.680
Like, I I've recommended it to my friends, my parents, my son.
00:23:33.920 --> 00:23:37.839
Everybody's just like, ever since you recommended that, they love it.
00:23:38.000 --> 00:23:39.359
And it's super fun.
00:23:39.519 --> 00:23:40.880
You're gonna love it, Susan, if you get it.
00:23:41.119 --> 00:23:55.599
I want to try it because I hear all sorts of birds, and uh I had this experience where I was sitting outside on the deck and I heard all this, and I had found a little piece of shell, a little blue piece of shell underneath this particular.
00:23:55.920 --> 00:24:00.400
It's a big bushy evergreen tree next to my deck.
00:24:00.480 --> 00:24:02.640
And so I found this little blue shell.
00:24:02.799 --> 00:24:08.240
And so I thought, oh my gosh, these birds have just hatched or hatched recently, and this piece of shell fell down.
00:24:08.400 --> 00:24:12.640
So I was like pulling the branches apart to see if I could find the nest.
00:24:12.960 --> 00:24:20.480
And out of the bush came like six little tiny birds, but they were flying and they were flying all around me.
00:24:20.559 --> 00:24:25.839
And it was so I was like, oh my gosh, I feel like Cinderella, like all these little birds flying around me.
00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:28.079
Except that it was a little bit more terrifying than that.
00:24:28.160 --> 00:24:33.440
So maybe it was more like the birds versus Cinderella, but the birds in Bodega Bay.
00:24:33.759 --> 00:24:34.160
Yeah.
00:24:34.400 --> 00:24:36.480
Yeah, which by the way, it's cute.
00:24:36.960 --> 00:24:37.359
Uh-huh.
00:24:37.680 --> 00:24:39.200
Oh, so it was so fun.
00:24:39.359 --> 00:24:44.480
It was just so neat to see these baby birds, and then I think they flew away for a while.
00:24:44.559 --> 00:24:51.759
And then I think now when I sit on the deck, I can hear them and they're chit-chatting and chitter-chattering together and making so much little noise.
00:24:51.920 --> 00:24:52.319
Yeah.
00:24:52.480 --> 00:24:53.599
So that's so neat.
00:24:53.759 --> 00:24:58.880
And you can also, the the app has like information about the birds, like where it's located.
00:24:59.200 --> 00:25:07.440
Um, so in my area, I get a notif a notification that there are like 300 different birds you can find in Sebastopol, my town.
00:25:07.759 --> 00:25:10.079
So, you know, you can use it as like a challenge.
00:25:10.240 --> 00:25:16.319
Try to find all 300 birds and maybe go to different areas, different parks or different neighborhoods and try to find them all.
00:25:16.640 --> 00:25:17.279
I I don't know.
00:25:18.160 --> 00:25:18.799
That's so neat.
00:25:18.960 --> 00:25:23.839
And you know what's beautiful is that listening to bird song calms your nervous system.
00:25:24.160 --> 00:25:24.640
It does.
00:25:24.799 --> 00:25:37.519
So if you're all stressed out with this move, going out in this practice of listening to the bird song and recording it and then finding out what birds it uh they are, you know, is actually soothing your nervous system.
00:25:37.599 --> 00:25:38.640
So that's so beautiful.
00:25:38.799 --> 00:25:39.279
Yeah.
00:25:39.599 --> 00:25:47.279
And it just, and even just listening, I'll record it just so I can kind of get an idea of, and now I'm starting to notice what like a finch.
00:25:47.359 --> 00:25:52.160
There's like a whole family of finch that live right on on my deck and in the trees there.
00:25:52.400 --> 00:25:55.759
And I just know now, oh, those are the finches, you know, and they're so cute.
00:25:55.839 --> 00:26:01.759
They're just these little tiny tiny brown, and so they have a little yellow, like a little yellow spike on their head.
00:26:01.839 --> 00:26:05.039
But there's also quails all over in the vineyard.
00:26:05.200 --> 00:26:05.920
I'm in a vineyard.
00:26:06.160 --> 00:26:06.640
There's tons.
00:26:07.200 --> 00:26:11.200
I just anyway, it's beautiful, and it does sound like a symphony.
00:26:11.279 --> 00:26:21.759
And I think the original, like, you know, in the 14th century and whatever that wrote music back then, they were listening to the birds and like trying to copy it.
00:26:21.920 --> 00:26:26.480
So I think I do see it as like a symphony or an orchestra of just bird song.
00:26:27.039 --> 00:26:29.119
Orchestra of nature, beautiful.
00:26:29.680 --> 00:26:31.200
Well, that is so fun.
00:26:31.440 --> 00:26:33.599
Thank you so much for being with us today.
00:26:33.759 --> 00:26:38.160
