INSIDE THE COCKPIT: DECODING THE MANUAL FLIGHT PATH OF MH370.
When Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished in 2014, the search turned from the skies to the depths of the ocean. In this episode, we sit down with Capt. Patrick Blelly and Jean-Luc Marchand, two veteran captains with decades of real-world cockpit experience. With careers defined by aviation safety and flight operations, they provide the critical technical reality check needed to understand why this disappearance remains history’s greatest aviation mystery.
In this rigorous, data-first deep dive, Capt. Blelly and Jean-Luc Marchand deliver a clinical, pilot’s-perspective breakdown of the flight, explaining the limitations of automated systems, the complexities of manual flight data, and why the sequence of events is more than just a figure of speech; it is a complex, tactical sequence that challenges the limits of aviation investigation.
In this episode, we discuss:
• Evidence of Manual Intervention: We analyze the 38° bank turn and heading variations between IGARI and Penang, using specific flight data parameters to rule out autopilot-controlled turns or "ghost flight" scenarios.
• SATCOM & Power Management: We examine the critical 18:25 UTC log-on and the absence of a flight number, as well as how correlating the 00:19 UTC SATCOM protocol with ELMS load shedding allows for a precise narrowing of the final impact zone.
• The Descent Profile: Through the integration of the First Officer’s CELCOM phone registration at 17:52:27 UTC and associated testing data, we establish the evidence for the aircraft’s descent to approximately FL300.
• Cockpit Protocols & Resourcefulness: We evaluate the manual selection of "Altitude Off" on the transponder, the failure to copy ATC frequencies, and what the use of VOR 1 reveals about pilot resource management under RAT power.
• Controlled Ditching Analysis: We interpret the structural evidence provided by the flaperon and flap trailing edges, explaining why a high-speed, fuel-exhausted descent would have produced a fundamentally different debris profile.
