ABOUT THIS EPISODE
On this episode of “SoundVision Tech Talks,” Zach, Marshall, Eric, and Andrew sit down to discuss Buying a House with Technology Already Installed.
The listing says “smart home included,” but that label can hide a lot: old wiring, unsupported lighting control, and accounts that still belong to the previous owner. We sit down with our design team and break down what to do the moment you buy a home with an existing home automation system, from whole-home audio and shades to security, surveillance, and Wi‑Fi.
We walk through how we approach a real smart home takeover, starting with the part most people overlook: the home network. If the networking backbone is weak, everything layered on top of it becomes flaky, no matter how expensive the gear looks. We also explain why an on-site technology audit can save buyers and sellers from nasty surprises, the same way a home inspection protects you from hidden structural issues. Think of it as a home technology inspection for integrated systems, especially in markets full of high-end homes and complex installations.
Then we get practical about the handoff: changing passwords and credentials across the board, removing prior homeowner access, updating alarm call lists, securing camera logins, and cleaning up streaming audio and video accounts. We also share what “end of life” really means in home automation, why some gear can be updated with firmware while other systems are simply no longer supported, and how that can turn into a major replacement bill if you find out too late.
If you’re buying, selling, or inheriting a smart home system and want it to be reliable, private, and easy to use, listen now. Subscribe for more Tech Talks, share this with a friend who’s house hunting, and leave a review with your biggest smart home question.

00:00:03.040 --> 00:00:12.160
Welcome to Sound Vision's Tech Talks, where we dive into trending topics and expert advice to help you make informed decisions about your home entertainment, automation, and more.
00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:20.079
Whether you're planning a new project or just curious about the possibilities, Tech Talks is your go-to source for staying updated on all things technology.
00:00:24.640 --> 00:00:32.960
So joining me in the podcast studio today, we have our designers, Marshall, Zach, and our design engineer Eric.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:33.520
Hello.
00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:34.240
Hola.
00:00:34.479 --> 00:00:35.759
Welcome, guys.
00:00:36.719 --> 00:00:39.840
Mike's in town, and Zach has to speak Spanish in here now.
00:00:41.439 --> 00:00:42.960
Did you know it's not Cozumel?
00:00:43.039 --> 00:00:43.759
It's Cozumel.
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:44.719
Cozumel, yeah.
00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:45.600
I learned that.
00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:46.479
Yeah.
00:00:46.719 --> 00:00:47.520
You gotta correct me.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:49.759
It's Cozumel Island, innit?
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:51.119
I don't I don't know.
00:00:51.439 --> 00:00:54.320
In Spanish Spanish geography.
00:00:55.359 --> 00:00:57.600
Welcome to our all things Cozumel podcast.
00:00:58.399 --> 00:00:59.119
Cozumel.
00:01:00.399 --> 00:01:01.520
Should have got Mike in here.
00:01:01.679 --> 00:01:08.000
So today we're gonna be discussing what to do when you buy a home that has a smart home system in it.
00:01:08.239 --> 00:01:08.719
Yeah.
00:01:08.959 --> 00:01:10.560
So run the other way.
00:01:10.799 --> 00:01:11.120
Run.
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:14.959
So I dude, legitimately, sometimes you should run.
00:01:16.480 --> 00:01:19.359
You know, this is a very tough topic.
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:26.319
It would be an easy topic, like if we were outside of this industry, but yet somehow still knew what we knew, then it would be easier.
00:01:27.120 --> 00:01:31.680
You know, let's face it, you have to define the word smart home first, right?
00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:33.519
It means different things to different people.
00:01:33.760 --> 00:01:34.159
Yeah.
00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:46.079
But oftentimes in this uh, you know, Lake Norman, Greater Charlotte area, when folks are buying homes with what we call integrated technology, people might call smart home, but it means different things.
00:01:46.159 --> 00:01:53.680
Somebody might move into a house and it has internet, like Wi-Fi, and a couple shades, and they call that a smart home.
00:01:53.840 --> 00:02:00.879
Some folks move into a home and it has some music around in different areas with speakers and maybe an alarm system, and they call it a smart home.
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:01.280
Yeah, yeah.
00:02:01.439 --> 00:02:11.199
Smart home to me is like my appliances connect to the Wi-Fi, but uh stove connected to the Wi-Fi is very different than your lighting control connected to the Wi-Fi or your security, your surveillance.
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:12.000
Like correct.
00:02:12.240 --> 00:02:23.759
Some of those things are A, you know, emergency style systems, or B, like I don't want the previous homeowner to have access to my new surveillance system or have the door codes to get in.
00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:26.560
Like, how do I switch all of that stuff over, right?
00:02:26.639 --> 00:02:28.000
That's what we're really talking about.
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:34.479
Yeah, I think the pain part comes when someone has bought a home and they've paid a lot of money for it.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:34.800
Yep.
00:02:34.960 --> 00:02:37.680
And a lot is defined by each individual.
00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:42.080
But it's not uncommon for us to have somebody call up who, hey, I just bought this new home.
00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:48.719
They don't tell us how much they paid for it, but you know, let's say it's a three million dollar home and we see how much they paid for.
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:53.520
Let's say it's a three million dollar home or a four million or a two million or a ten million, who knows?
00:02:53.599 --> 00:02:53.759
Yeah.
00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:00.639
And and they say, you know, I've got uh this home technology or smart home system in it, and I need you to come out and get everything working.
00:03:00.800 --> 00:03:01.039
Right.
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:03.280
For us, that's usually a moment of anxiety.
00:03:03.439 --> 00:03:03.680
Oh, yeah.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:07.919
Not because we can't, but because there's a proper process to do it.
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:08.639
Yep.
00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:13.520
And we recognize that the customer is not expecting that answer.
00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:13.919
Yeah.
00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:26.240
The customer's expecting, let me bring these guys out, they're gonna sprinkle some fairy dust on my system and my alarm and my lighting and my shades and my Wi-Fi and my TVs are all just gonna magically work.
00:03:26.319 --> 00:03:26.479
Yeah.
00:03:26.719 --> 00:03:37.360
And at the end of the day, um these a lot of the systems that are deployed out there in homes are done in very different manners because not every company has processes at all.
00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:42.560
And certainly the ones that do have processes, they may not be alike.
00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:43.039
Yeah.
00:03:43.280 --> 00:03:53.840
Um, so when we, Sound Vision, are tasked to come out and do that, I usually start by telling folks some of the um common pitfalls that we find.
00:03:54.080 --> 00:04:06.800
Um, a lot of that revolves around the original installer maybe having used an inferior um networking product because everything is at its backbone connected to the internet.
00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:18.639
And all of any subsystem, whether it's audio or shading or lighting or video or whatever, surveillance, it's it's never more reliable than the network that it's sitting on.
00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:18.959
Yeah.
00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:23.839
Um, and in our world, that's how we build systems from the ground up, network.
00:04:23.920 --> 00:04:31.279
And then we're we're going out into these other verticals and knowing that we have this robust uh backbone the entire time.
00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:42.319
Our networks are also kind of the fundamental layer that allows us to deploy and guarantee the level of service that we give our clients, a specifically remote service.
00:04:42.720 --> 00:04:45.199
Um so uh they're tough.
00:04:45.360 --> 00:04:50.399
It's tough to go out, uh, but we absolutely are available to go out and do an audit.
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:53.519
Here is what I would say might be the most effective way.
00:04:54.240 --> 00:04:55.600
And I've offered this.
00:04:55.839 --> 00:05:06.160
I've had more than one meeting with some larger real estate firms and went in and literally presented to these brokers, whether or not they're representing a buyer or representing a seller.
00:05:06.560 --> 00:05:10.240
We've offered our services of what I call like a technology audit.
00:05:10.480 --> 00:05:14.399
Hey, I'm selling this home or I'm or I'm thinking of buying this home.
00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:24.879
I would love to have 20, you know, discerning real estate brokers calling us and having us go out and help them through these to get out in front of these.
00:05:25.040 --> 00:05:25.199
Yeah.
00:05:25.439 --> 00:05:33.600
You know, there there are times when we've had people call and you know they uh are under the impression they've purchased this home and everything works.
00:05:33.759 --> 00:05:39.439
And we get out there and there's a lot of money that needs to be spent to make everything work.
00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:41.680
That's always the one that bothers me the most.
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:45.759
Like every now and then we get lucky and a client calls, like, hey, I just bought a home.
00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:47.839
And I'm like, Well, what does the rack say?
00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:48.560
Whose name is on it?
00:05:48.639 --> 00:05:50.160
And oh, it says Soundvision.
00:05:50.319 --> 00:05:51.279
Perfect, right?
00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:54.079
I can guarantee that that system's in good condition, right?
00:05:54.160 --> 00:05:54.399
Right.
00:05:54.560 --> 00:05:57.120
I don't care if it's five years old, ten years old.
00:05:57.439 --> 00:05:59.759
We have at some point put our stamp on it, right?
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:22.240
But then sometimes you get one of that's you know, I bought a new home that's 25 years old and it has the original wiring and it looks like a rat's nest, and that's always people's uh first level of um anxiety, I think, is when they look at the wiring, which is why we now at this point put so much uh love and affection into what the way the wiring looks.
00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:28.000
Because it at the end of the day, it doesn't function any differently if it looks better, it's just just more satisfying, right?
00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:30.079
More satisfying is it a yes.
00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:35.360
Um, so based on how the wiring looks in the house, like people are just I'm just gonna call somebody.
00:06:35.439 --> 00:06:38.319
Yeah, like help me figure out what this is and what I need to do.
00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:43.680
And then you dig into it sometimes and it's like, you know, can this stuff work or did it work?
00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:45.839
You know, a few years ago, probably.
00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:53.120
But at this point, like we can't put our stamp on it unless we do these certain few things to make it ultra viable.
00:06:53.279 --> 00:07:03.680
Because what the what we don't want to do is band-aid a system, get it working, and it still be either too complex to use or too complex to use, and it be fun to use.
00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:09.839
Like we want it to be everything you want it to be, and not just put a band-aid on an open wound, right?
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:16.079
And that system could have been fantastic, as Marshall said, for the previous owner and the new owner.
00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:17.360
It could have been terrible.
00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:24.399
The interesting part is if it was terrible for the original owner, you're probably not gonna post that in your real estate listing.
00:07:24.720 --> 00:07:29.120
It's not gonna be houses beautiful, lakefront, terrible smart blah blah blah technology.
00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:31.680
We need a service call every week on the system.
00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:32.959
Nobody's gonna advertise that.
00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:34.319
But we don't know.
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:37.199
And the new homeowner coming in certainly doesn't know.
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:47.199
Um, so you know, we start with kind of an on-site audit or assessment, if you will, where we go out and and we physically look and see what all the house has.
00:07:47.519 --> 00:07:48.480
Which is usually you and I.
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:48.879
Yes.
00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:54.720
Going out to the house, finding the wiring, you know, show me the closet that you found with a stack of equipment or a ton of wire in it.
00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:55.439
Let's start there.
00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:03.519
And then it's, you know, what zones of audio exist, what TV locations are, you know, may or may not even still be in place.
00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:11.439
Um, you know, what are the other outliers, lighting control, shading control, what is the battery life on the current alarm system?
00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:14.240
And there's so, so many details.
00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:18.319
And we almost never get every single one of them just because they're so elaborate.
00:08:18.399 --> 00:08:27.040
Like there's so much to go through on the first go-round that inevitably speaking, we we uncover something in the actual takeover that we still need to address.
00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:30.800
And and that I think that part's fairly painless for the client.
00:08:30.879 --> 00:08:36.799
I think when you uncover those moments, the client can appreciate oh, you're gonna you're gonna fix this for me.
00:08:36.960 --> 00:08:37.279
Yeah.
00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:40.559
Um, the difficult part is the trust side of it.
00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:50.080
Like we our goal at Sound Vision, if we're do regardless of what we find, I've walked into homes and told clients, this is great.
00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:51.600
Like this is really well done.
00:08:52.080 --> 00:08:52.960
We thought it out.
00:08:53.200 --> 00:08:56.399
Let me explain to you what all's in here, let me explain to you what's not.
00:08:56.720 --> 00:08:58.159
Um, is this how you want to use it?
00:08:58.240 --> 00:09:01.039
I've had customers say, Oh, uh the security's not up and running.
00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:01.279
Cool.
00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:02.399
I don't want security anyways.
00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:03.679
Then we don't have a problem.
00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:04.559
Easy, right?
00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:21.360
Um I've had clients that had systematic drawings and plans that had, you know, we do these for every project where we just like you would have a set of electrical plans or a set of plumbing plans, we have uh uh, you know, this uh these planner surveys that show all the technology.
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:25.440
I've seen forms of those come back to us, which have been helpful.
00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:38.639
Um, but at the end of the day, even if everything there is working and the client wants to keep it all as is, even at that moment, the things they have to understand is we need to log in and remove all previous homeowners access to everything.
00:09:38.720 --> 00:09:38.879
Yeah.
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:45.840
We need to set up with all new passwords and credentials for the for the homeowner that's taking over the job.
00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:50.320
If that's Wi-Fi, is it is there one network or is there a guest network?
00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:52.720
I mean, we do multiple VLANs on our networks.
00:09:52.960 --> 00:10:01.679
If it's security, you know, we've got to get the a new password, a new passphrase, the the emergency call list, names and numbers need to be changed, surveillance.
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:03.840
You definitely want to change credentials on that.
00:10:03.919 --> 00:10:11.440
I mean, that's a pretty private and personal thing, the video, whether in or out of your of your home, and then streaming audio and video accounts.
00:10:11.600 --> 00:10:14.480
I mean, you know, what what all needs to be swapped over?
00:10:14.799 --> 00:10:24.080
That in and of itself is a service technician several hours for a day, yeah, you know, and and then show them how to operate it.
00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:25.519
Right, then go to the handoff.
00:10:26.799 --> 00:10:28.720
Yeah, which we've done a podcast about.
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:44.159
Um, but yeah, it is not um it's troubling when people expect that everything that's in the home works perfect, and that uh again, you know, it's it's 30 minutes an hour of fairy dust that we sprinkle over the roof and it and poof it works.
00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:58.399
Uh and I I really go back, and any one of our seven listeners uh can take me up on this, but the idea of people calling Sound Vision going, hey, look, I'm selling this home, it's got a system in it.
00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:03.600
Do you mind like coming out and look, do I need to tune anything up before we're before we list?
00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:14.799
Because it's being listed as one of the feature sets, kind of like a pool, kind of like a dock, kind of like a whatever, uh, as having this this this technology package in it, and we don't want to to false advertise.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:21.519
And equally, possibly even more importantly, is offering that service to somebody who is looking to purchase a home.
00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:23.840
Hey, we're looking at buying this home.
00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:25.440
Do you mind meeting us out?
00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:27.039
I mean, they're gonna call a home inspector.
00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:27.360
Right.
00:11:27.440 --> 00:11:28.480
Yeah, very fair.
00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:32.080
Home inspector is gonna be like, yeah, it's got a blanket light on it, it must be working.
00:11:32.320 --> 00:11:33.360
Yeah, yeah.
00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:36.720
So I you know, at the end of the day, kind of think of us as that.
00:11:36.799 --> 00:11:36.960
Yeah.
00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:38.480
The technology home inspection.
00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:39.759
Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:41.360
It is a it should be a thing.
00:11:41.440 --> 00:11:42.240
Yeah, it should have been a thing.
00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:51.440
Because we can look at a system and say, you know, what parts of this are I'll call them end of life, but what I really mean is no longer supported by the manufacturer.
00:11:51.519 --> 00:11:53.279
They might still be working just fine.
00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:59.440
But if it goes out, am I looking at a replacement or replacement part, or do I need a whole new system?
00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:00.799
Or, you know, what's the case?
00:12:00.960 --> 00:12:06.480
And you know, it's it's not always, you know, replace all the speakers and the wiring and the shades and amplifiers.
00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:10.639
Like a lot of this equipment is what we would call relatively dumb equipment, right?
00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:22.399
It's got a long lifespan, it's not really doing any of the real heavy lifting on the um like the the technology side of it, it's just you know, raw power for the speakers or whatever the case is.
00:12:22.559 --> 00:12:29.279
But there are some components, and we're seeing it better nowadays than we used to 10, 15, 20 years ago.
00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:37.759
Back then it was, you know, when your processor needed an update, it was you know, buy a new$5,000 thing, but it's not really that way anymore.
00:12:37.919 --> 00:12:48.960
So most systems within the last you know, five, definitely five, maybe even ten years, have the horsepower from the manufacturer to be able to be updated via software, firmware.
00:12:49.200 --> 00:12:53.600
But depending on the previous integrator, some of that stuff might not have even been getting done.
00:12:53.679 --> 00:13:00.080
So it might just be us come in, do the handoff and the credentials logins, and then give you an update.
00:13:00.399 --> 00:13:00.559
Yeah.
00:13:00.720 --> 00:13:00.960
Yeah.
00:13:01.200 --> 00:13:02.320
It could be as simple as that.
00:13:02.639 --> 00:13:04.960
There uh three stories come to mind.
00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:06.559
I'll boil them into one.
00:13:07.360 --> 00:13:10.320
All of the products that we use are vetted.
00:13:10.720 --> 00:13:18.480
Um we try our best specifically on things like lighting control at shades and security.
00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:22.879
You know, there's always this newest, latest, and greatest TV model or speaker model.
00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:27.440
And people almost are at a point now where they know, like, I'm gonna buy a TV, I'm gonna have it for five years.
00:13:27.600 --> 00:13:30.000
There's gonna be something new that comes out that I want to upgrade to.
00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:30.879
And I'm happy about it.
00:13:30.960 --> 00:13:31.279
Yeah, yeah.
00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:40.000
But when you're buying a home that has a full panelized lighting control system in it, you want to use a product that has been around kind of like since panelized lighting was invented.
00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:40.240
Yeah.
00:13:40.480 --> 00:13:40.720
Right.
00:13:40.879 --> 00:13:42.320
Which is which is what we use.
00:13:42.559 --> 00:13:43.919
There was, I'll leave the names out.
00:13:44.080 --> 00:13:47.679
There was an integrator uh in the Lake Norman area, 15.
00:13:47.840 --> 00:13:49.279
It was in business for a while.
00:13:49.440 --> 00:14:01.600
Um, and he carried a brand of lighting control that at the time, now the brands we carry were still a thing back then, still a thing now, but at the time there was one manufacturer, I'll leave the name unknown, but they were getting some traction.
00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:10.559
And this one dealer was pretty successful at deploying these in some of Lake Norman's nicer lakefront waterfront homes.
00:14:10.720 --> 00:14:11.039
Yeah.
00:14:11.279 --> 00:14:15.360
Um, three of those homes hit us in two years.
00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:15.919
Yeah.
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:16.320
Wow.
00:14:16.559 --> 00:14:18.879
Like and these were not small systems.
00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:20.639
I I know exactly what you're referencing.
00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:29.600
And yes, so we had three homeowners that bought lakefront, nice homes that the lighting didn't work in the house.
00:14:30.480 --> 00:14:30.799
Right?
00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:44.639
They they move, you know, they're walking through a tour in the house, they hit a button, a light comes on in the room, they go over here, hit a button, and then when they actually move in, they realize like none of these buttons, like 90% of these buttons don't work, yeah, and 90 of you 25% of these lights don't turn on and off.
00:14:44.960 --> 00:14:47.360
It's almost as recess, it's turning on the bathroom chandelier.
00:14:47.600 --> 00:14:48.480
Yes, yeah.
00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:56.080
Well, all three of those systems, uh, we had to completely take those lighting control systems out and install new product.
00:14:56.240 --> 00:15:00.240
And these were$75,000 upgrades.
00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:05.120
Yeah, well, well, that's one you buy a home and then and then we walk in and go, oh, you want the lights to work?
00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:06.480
It's gonna be$75,000.
00:15:07.039 --> 00:15:09.279
And we look like immediately not the nice guy.
00:15:09.440 --> 00:15:09.759
Yeah, right.
00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:11.360
We're immediately the the enemy.
00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:15.840
And I'm like, look, that this like I don't want this to be happening right now.
00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:16.399
Yeah, yeah.
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:21.759
But it is it is, and just like anything or most things, there's a right way to fix this.
00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:26.480
This manufacturer doesn't, you can't buy the any of these parts that's exactly what I was saying earlier.
00:15:26.639 --> 00:15:34.480
Like, is this a system where I can update something, or am I looking at, like you mentioned, a$75,000 replacement?
00:15:34.639 --> 00:15:37.519
Yeah, that's a big thing to know up front, you know.
00:15:37.679 --> 00:15:38.399
Yeah, absolutely.
00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:44.799
It gives you the buyer different power than, you know, yeah, I moved in and it ain't working.
00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:45.679
Correct.
00:15:46.000 --> 00:16:03.440
Well, and the thing that people don't think about is it's not only a question for the customer on whether how much money or time or whatever they want to spend to get this system to where they think it should be, but it's also a question for us of, you know, do we want to take over this system?
00:16:03.679 --> 00:16:09.840
Because that's why we'll go to you and say, okay, in order for Sound Vision to take over this system, we need to do X, Y, and Z.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:12.879
You know, and that is$50,000.
00:16:13.200 --> 00:16:17.279
And they're like, oh my God, I just spent a million dollars on this house.
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:17.919
I can't do that.
00:16:18.080 --> 00:16:25.360
And you're like, you know, fair enough, I completely understand, but we're not gonna take over a home that we can't warranty.
00:16:25.519 --> 00:16:28.320
Because basically, the minute we touch a wire, it's our system.
00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:28.720
Yeah.
00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:33.519
And the minute something goes wrong, it's gonna be like, this doesn't work, and you were here yesterday, so that's why it doesn't work.
00:16:33.679 --> 00:16:39.279
And so that's why we have to be selective as well, and to be like, we need to properly vet this.
00:16:39.360 --> 00:16:43.600
We need to tell you exactly what it's gonna take to get it up to sound vision standards.
00:16:43.679 --> 00:16:46.320
And if you can't do it, perfectly fine.
00:16:46.559 --> 00:16:48.080
Just you need to know where we're coming from.
00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:49.039
No, you're you're right.
00:16:49.120 --> 00:16:56.879
I think it's also fair to state that you know, we've talked about some of the like far end of the spectrum nightmares that we've addressed, right?
00:16:57.039 --> 00:16:57.200
Yep.
00:16:57.279 --> 00:16:57.360
Yeah.
00:16:57.519 --> 00:17:06.079
But we do, I mean, at the end of the day, we're probably asked to do somewhere between 10 and probably 15 to 20 takeovers a year.
00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:07.839
Let's say that's probably a fair number.
00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:08.400
Yeah.
00:17:08.640 --> 00:17:12.000
Um 90% of those are pretty simple.
00:17:12.319 --> 00:17:18.079
Yeah, it's usually that my previous company doesn't exist anymore, the installer moved out of state or whatever.
00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:24.559
Like, not every system is is done by a professional, like larger company like Soundvision.
00:17:24.640 --> 00:17:30.880
Some of them are, you know, one, two-man operations that just, you know, maybe it was retirement or maybe they had to move it.
00:17:30.960 --> 00:17:31.519
Well, whatever.
00:17:31.839 --> 00:17:35.759
But they're not all done by somebody who's going to be around for the next 15 years.
00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:36.400
Correct.
00:17:36.559 --> 00:17:36.799
Correct.
00:17:36.880 --> 00:17:37.039
Yeah.
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:41.759
Most of those we go in, a few minor tweaks, some time to get it.
00:17:42.160 --> 00:17:56.000
The things that we need to change to, as Eric articulated, to get it into a system that Sound Vision can take ownership of and look that client in the eye and guarantee them the level of reliability and service that we would guarantee them if we had done the job from the beginning.
00:17:56.240 --> 00:17:56.480
Right.
00:17:56.960 --> 00:17:59.599
That's kind of where we have to get the systems to.
00:18:01.920 --> 00:18:02.240
Yeah.
00:18:05.119 --> 00:18:05.519
Oh God.
00:18:06.079 --> 00:18:08.000
I think that's our time to wrap up.
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:12.000
Yeah, anything else you guys want to add?
00:18:13.519 --> 00:18:19.039
Um, I mean, I think you've articulated a pretty well this would last.
00:18:19.359 --> 00:18:21.119
Uh I didn't read the back page.
00:18:21.359 --> 00:18:27.119
Um don't assume that because the technology turns on that the system's been properly transferred.
00:18:27.200 --> 00:18:28.160
I mean, that goes yeah.
00:18:28.720 --> 00:18:30.240
No, I think you you've probably got enough.
00:18:30.559 --> 00:18:31.440
You've probably got enough.
00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:54.079
I mean, I think I would in closing, I would state that we, you know, here at Sound Vision, we recognize that um anybody who's building a home and doing a new system or buying a home and uh trying to understand what's already in, or maybe adding to um we have processes for every one of those customers.
00:18:54.240 --> 00:18:56.240
We we've we've done it wrong.
00:18:56.480 --> 00:18:59.279
Yeah, you know, we weren't smart enough to figure out.
00:18:59.359 --> 00:19:08.160
I've had had somebody recently like, hey, we were I was talking in in the conversation and just some of our processes were coming out, and they were like, Wow, you guys are like really smart to figure all those out.
00:19:08.319 --> 00:19:14.240
I'm like, well, no, we just aren't egotistical enough to not learn from our mistakes, right?
00:19:14.799 --> 00:19:17.359
Um, but we do we have processes for all.
00:19:17.519 --> 00:19:27.759
Um I've yet to go into a scenario that we uh could not help solve for for the customer and what they were trying to achieve.
00:19:28.400 --> 00:19:35.519
And specifically when we're talking about this concept of someone's bought a house, has technology, uh, what do I do?
00:19:35.759 --> 00:19:40.480
Um that could be sometimes a bitter experiment experience for the client.
00:19:40.559 --> 00:19:46.559
You know, we've articulated a couple of things already where they expect to buy something, they buy it, and it's not what they expected.
00:19:46.880 --> 00:19:52.079
So, you know, one dollar is an expense that they they don't think they should have to spend.
00:19:52.240 --> 00:19:54.480
And and and you know, look, deservingly so.
00:19:54.640 --> 00:19:56.400
I'm not I would be in the same boat.
00:19:56.880 --> 00:20:13.519
So I'm just gonna go back and lean back into uh folks being able to reach out to us and letting us come out and kind of be that technology inspector um on if they're selling or possibly more importantly, if they're buying and and letting us be, you know, have a relationship with them earlier.
00:20:13.759 --> 00:20:14.240
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:14.480 --> 00:20:14.960
Absolutely.
00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:20.319
I don't ever want to be the bad guy that's like making someone feel like we're taking advantage of them.
00:20:20.640 --> 00:20:25.599
You know, if we can if we can get upstream of that, that makes everybody happier.
00:20:26.160 --> 00:20:26.960
Yeah, it's a win-win.
00:20:27.039 --> 00:20:27.440
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:27.599 --> 00:20:29.359
Well, a uh top tech tip.
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:46.400
If you're buying a house, um pretty much uh real estate now says that if it's attached to the wall, it's supposed to stay, which most people believe is TVs, which is untrue because you can take the TV off the wall and the mount assess to stay, but they only leave half the mount.
00:20:46.640 --> 00:20:51.519
So no matter what, you're gonna have to buy all new mounts, even though they left the mount on the wall.
00:20:53.599 --> 00:20:55.119
The old the old half mount.
00:20:55.359 --> 00:20:57.599
Yeah, I just went through that at a a house.
00:20:58.240 --> 00:20:59.920
Same scenario that we're talking about right now.
00:21:00.079 --> 00:21:04.160
A lady moved into a house in Davidson and it's got a big control forge system in it.
00:21:04.240 --> 00:21:16.000
And 90% of it is is great, it's perfect, but there's like 16 TVs in that house mounted, but they quote unquote left all the mounts, and I'm like, man, I hate to be this guy.
00:21:16.880 --> 00:21:18.720
Five or full mounds.
00:21:19.279 --> 00:21:21.759
You're missing half of every single one of these.
00:21:21.839 --> 00:21:22.319
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:22.559 --> 00:21:24.400
All you gotta do is set the TV on the wall, right?
00:21:24.559 --> 00:21:27.680
Well, yeah, I mean, the people who moved out, it's probably not even their fault.
00:21:27.759 --> 00:21:32.480
Like they hired movers who took a TV down and put it in a box without taking the brackets off the back of it.
00:21:32.960 --> 00:21:36.240
Funny story, having done this longer than all of you, probably put together.
00:21:36.319 --> 00:21:44.720
Yeah, except for the the worst original concept of what we do to hang TVs was done by Phillips.
00:21:45.039 --> 00:21:55.279
Years and years ago when flat screen TVs very first came out, there was this commercial, and it was a younger man and woman, and they come home with this flat screen plasma, right?
00:21:55.440 --> 00:21:56.559
Plasma TV, right?
00:21:57.039 --> 00:21:59.119
Um which were god-awfully heavy.
00:22:00.559 --> 00:22:21.359
So this, you know, good-looking man and woman, average size, you know, they they unbox this TV and it shows them, and it it's like they're holding like a piece of cardboard and weight, and they walk into the living room and they hang it on this wall, and they take a step back and they kind of look inquisitively at one another, and they shake their heads no, and then it comes off the wall, and then you see them hanging on this other wall, and they're like, No, and it's like three different times you see this.
00:22:21.519 --> 00:22:32.240
And then at the very end, the camera shot is above them, like if they were laying in bed, and they both have like smiles on their faces, and the shot zooms back, and the TV is hanging on the ceiling over their bed.
00:22:32.400 --> 00:22:33.920
And I'm like, A plasma TV?
00:22:34.079 --> 00:22:34.480
A plasma.
00:22:34.640 --> 00:22:37.440
That's like a any TV, but it was a plasma.
00:22:37.599 --> 00:22:46.799
I was like, you just gave the whole world the the idea that you could just walk around hanging these things on the wall with Velcro or whatever.
00:22:47.599 --> 00:22:49.039
Whatever you're using in this video.
00:22:49.279 --> 00:22:49.920
It's that easy.
00:22:50.160 --> 00:22:53.839
This is terrible, this is a terrible conceptual idea to give to the to the world.
00:22:53.920 --> 00:22:55.440
But I'm sure they got lots of sales.
00:22:56.319 --> 00:22:57.599
Thank you, Phillips, for doing that.
00:22:57.759 --> 00:22:58.480
That's awesome.
00:22:58.720 --> 00:23:00.799
Now I'm gonna go uh put a TV on my ceiling.
00:23:00.960 --> 00:23:01.599
There you go.
00:23:02.880 --> 00:23:04.400
We've replaced mirrors, apparently.
00:23:06.480 --> 00:23:07.119
Yeah.
00:23:07.839 --> 00:23:08.160
All right.
