Speaker 1: This is Sharp Money with Patrick Maher and a maal Shaw on feast End Please Sports.
00:00:06
Speaker 2: Betty Network in one hour Number Honey Live from Las Vegas at the South Point Sportsbook Studios. We're back a lot of college football NFL to discuss this hour, also following the latest in Major League Baseball?
00:00:16
Speaker 3: What update you on that?
00:00:17
Speaker 2: In about fifteen minutes, a couple of games going down to the wire, dust and sweetest, and our producer found out of them all, he's got a sweat of a game he didn't even know.
00:00:23
Speaker 4: He had so well, no, I'm sweating because of the AC's.
00:00:26
Speaker 2: It's besides that the sweats have been you know, that was established about two minutes into the show. But alas, we're going to talk to some college football right now. Big twelve also back in with Little Atlanta Falcons talk because our next guest, Dave Archer, a long time coverer of both, works on the Atlanta Falcons of the radio broadcast network also serious XM Big twelve radio host.
00:00:44
Speaker 3: Give him a follow at Archer.
00:00:45
Speaker 2: QB sixteen joins us right now and David question everybody wants to know is will this be the year that Texas finally does not underachieve and lives up to the preseason hype. With the win total of nine and a half, it continues to get bet to the over now minus one forty you have to lave you Texas win ten games. What is your outlook on this long quarantine heading into the year.
00:01:05
Speaker 5: Well, I think it's a team that's certainly loaded on their on paper, there's no question about that. When you look at them from a talent standpoint, some of the transfers that have come in the development of quinn ewers, the quarterback, and and I think their improvement defensively, some of that personnel, some of that you know with coaching with Pete Quickcawski of course in a combination with with Gary Patterson a year ago. That the improvements Texas made along the and then the imcruitment of of the big guys up front, they've they've fashioned themselves into a team on paper that looks like and they were the favorite at Big twelve media days. All the media picked Texas to be the favorite, and they should be based on what you see on paper, but as it turns out, we don't play the game on paper, so it'll it'll be the continued development of Quinn viewers, if Quintin can take that next step, which I think he will, He's got a mass of people around him, both that have grown up in the Texas program and those that have been transferred in that give Texas a pretty good outlook to step forward.
00:02:10
Speaker 6: Dave, you can't talk about the burn Orange without talking about their rival, which is obviously Oklahoma north of the Red River. Second year there for Brent Bennables Dylan Gabriel back under center. Sooners did lose a lot of talent the last couple years in terms of transfers and mims going to the pros. But how do you look at Oklahoma on the offensive side of the ball, and then of course defensively is where where Bennables really made his bones at Clemson and of course previously at Ou.
00:02:32
Speaker 5: Yeah, this will be a little bit more of an interesting Ou team. And the fact that I think Dylan Gabriel is an outstanding player at the quarterback position. They were a different football team with Dylan on the field. He didn't have the backup power of be able to guy that transferred in from what Pid or someplace. He just wasn't very good and subsequently they lost what forty eighth, another forty nine and h into their rival Texas. That's not the case this year. They've got Jackson Arnold, the highly recruited kids that came in. He played extremely well in the spring. I think they're very solid. They're very solidified at the quarterback position, even if they had to hand it to the true freshman. It'll be interesting to see who steps up around Dylan Gabriel when it comes to the offensive side of the football, because we know that you know, Ry Gray's gone, their thousand yard rusher, Marvin Men's has gone to the National Football League. They're outstanding wide receivers, so it's going to be up to Farook and a couple other receivers to step up around. Austin Stagner returns as their tight end. He's very familiar with the program, of course, to do an Oklahoma Sooner and then spend a whole time in South Carolina before coming back O you. So, I think their offensive lineups to be solid. Coach beedenbos outstanding when it comes to offensive line player. The thing that gets lost about ou is is there they're a team that you think, Okay, slings it all over the yard and that's not really the case, but they're really good. They can run it. They got back to run the ball agear again last year after kind of an absent team when it came to the running game in twenty one, they got back to run the ball. They ran the ball for almost two hundred and twenty yards a year ago, so that'll be something they'll need to do, even with Dylan Gabriel, the veteran quarterback, getting things done. The real questions for this team is not necessarily the offensive side of the Bullets. On the defensive side. They've attacked that side. Bred Venables went out and got a lot of guys in free agency, if you will the transfer portal, there's a number of players that slide in. Tsad McCullough as the first guy that comes to mind at Indiana outstanding looks the part edge rusher that looks like he could be an outside linebacker slash edge rusher. He's just a sophomore, but a big kid. Their interior defensive line. They've bolstered that with another transfer in Rondel Bothroyd, who's going to step in. So they've got guys that Dannie Stutsman, one of the better middle linebackers in the league. They're pretty solid in the secondary. But again, this is not very good, not a very good defensive unit last year, much to everybody's surprised if Venables being the head coach. But I think they're they're going to improve. How much much they're going to improve, I mean, that's just you have to wait and see what it looks like on the field.
00:05:03
Speaker 2: Now, we're talking Big twelve football right now with Dave Archer here here on Serious XM Big twelve Radio right now on Sharp Money, and I'm curious your thoughts, Dave on the four newcomers into the conference where U c F, b YU, Cincinnati, Houston Hall now move over first full year of a full Big twelve Conference late U SEF of those four the only team with a win total of over six and with a sub forty to one shot at least to win the conference at thirty five to one. How do you expect that transition goes for head coaching Gus Malzan and the Golden Knights.
00:05:30
Speaker 5: Well, I think it's going to be a good one in the fact that they got John Rice Plumbing their quarterback and returns and he's got some he's got some transfers that have been in the program for a couple of years, they're gonna be around it and his outstaying. He's got a he's got a really nice wide receiver corps. The biggest thing for them is can they keep John Rice Plumbly healthy. That was a that was a problem a year ago. They had the ability to hand the ball to Isaiah Bowser, who was essentially a running quarterback and and he did some good things down in the red zone for him, but they're different when when Plumbley's on the field. So, uh, if he can do that, he's a very talented guy and I think he's going to help him a lot. But they've got some good outside receivers. They think they're better on defense, and people think they are the biggest transition for them will be playing a Power five roster or Power five schedule. So normally they would play a couple three teams that were there were Power five teams and then the rest of it was was sprinkled in with their their AAC compatriots or uh some of the smaller teams like these other teams play. But the depth becomes a glaring issue when you begin to have to run a gauntlet in a Power five conference. So I think that they're the most eclipsed. They had made some noise in the Big Twelve, but if seeing if their death is there to be able to handle battle of attrition that will inevitably take.
00:06:53
Speaker 6: Place, Dave, Which are some teams that intrigue you in this league? Outside of obviously Texas know you at the top, Ben, just as you got UCF. Whether it's Kansas State, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, who think who do you think could potentially be a team that challenges for the top of the league outside of the Big Two.
00:07:10
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think k State's ready to go. I thank Chris Clembon is an outstanding coach. I think that they've They've got a veteran quarterback, and Will Howard found himself after taking over the job about halfway through the year again after Adrian Martinez was kind of banged up and and Will came in and really played well. They beat PCU the Big Twelve title game, their first Big Twelve title in forever, and so they're poised with him coming back down. They lose Douslan, they lose Compelick and dk Azuma their defense. He's in he's an outstanding player. Those guys both went to the National Football League, But I think they've recruited well and they've got in Climb and I'm I'm a big climb in can I think that you know, he won a number of national championships at the level just below at North Dakota State, and and then here he is in what his fourth year, and he guides them to a Big twelve title. So I think that I think the coaching and there's good coaching throughout this league, but I think that Climbing, to me, is one of those guys that maybe he's the next level guy seems to communicate and seems to lock in with his players maybe better than some do. Another guy that would be in that same category a Joey McGuire at Texas Tech. I think that this is the year of the Texas Tech and Zach Khittley's offense should should catch fire. If they can get Tyler Shuck on the field, they're a different team. I think I think they're like eight and two with Tyler Shuck as a starter. He showed the ability to run the football some last year, which I don't think anybody knew he could do. And they've got a talented young kid behind him in Baron Morton, but it's not really his time yet. If Shuck stays on the field, I think this is a group on offense. They return a ton of guys on the offensive side of the ball, All eleven starters from last year come back, and then the defense is kind of fixing some of the years Tyree Wilson off the National Football leage after being a first round drafted field he could fill that void. He had some seven or eight sacks a year ago for him. But I don't think they're necessarily laying in the weeds, guys. I think that I think I actually cook Texas in KSE State to play for the Big Twelve championship. So I think that Texas tex is going to be in the mix as well.
00:09:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, Case State trying to get back to that championship game after winning a season ago. In addition to covering the Big Twelve for Serio s XM. Dave Archie can hear him on the Falcons Radio Network Training camp now open. Dave, I'm sure you've been getting that early glimpse of what the Falcons will look like in twenty twenty three.
00:09:24
Speaker 3: You know where we are out in Vegas.
00:09:26
Speaker 2: A lot of interest, a lot of respected money on the over from seven and a half to eight now it's eight and a half juiced over minus one twenty.
00:09:32
Speaker 3: You buying the kool aid on this Atlanta team heading into the year.
00:09:36
Speaker 5: Well, I like the team. I like this. I like what Terry Fonto did in the offseason. I really attacked the defensive side of the football at free agency. There's a number of players that come over that have been successful in this league, or guys that are kind of looking for a new lease on life. A couple of guys with Jeff Acuda and Mike Hughes, two guys who are former number one picks, come in and we'll play corner spots, potentially nickel corner. You could have Terrell, Mike Two's and Jeff Akudo in the field. All those guys are number one picks and all who were highly regarded when they came out of Heights out of college. So I liked the makeup of the defense. Now they're gonna have to show it on the field. It was not a team that was very good on third down a year ago, and they couldn't get after the possers, So that was what they were trying to attack with some of the free agency signs. UH on the offensive side of the football, it's just a young team. Drake London had an outstanding last year year last year as the first round pick out of USC. Kyle Pitts, who was the year before who had a really year good year, actually went to the Pro Bowls as a rookie tight end. He tore his knee up, and so he looks he's back on the field ready to go. And and of course the addition of b Jon Robinson and some of the versatility he brings the Texas running back it looks like there's a lot of a lot of weapons. You had John new Smith to that, who's who played with with Arthur Smith as the is the offensive coordinator for in Tennessee. All of a sudden, you like a lot of the weapons. You know, des Rutter is gonna to take another step. Dez played the last four games of the year. The third round draft pick out of Cincinnati, big kid, athletic, got a great attitude, played fifty games in college, was two and two in his four games with the Falcons last year, and he's a he looks. He looks solid. I like his makeup, I like his mentality, and I'm expecting Dez to have a really good year. So I'm the Falcon guy, so I'm sure I like the Falcus down the right.
00:11:25
Speaker 3: I like Facons all the way, So give him a followed.
00:11:28
Speaker 2: Archer QB sixteen played college football for Iowa stay played eight years of the NFL outstanding work as a series Sex and Big twelve radio analyst and on the Atlanta Falcons radio network.
00:11:37
Speaker 3: Dave, so thanks so much for the time. We really appreciate it.
00:11:39
Speaker 5: Good talking to you guys. You'll take care.
00:11:41
Speaker 6: Thank you.
00:11:42
Speaker 2: Great to insight there from Dave Archer. As we come back, update you on a little bit of baseball and also go.
00:11:46
Speaker 3: Into our three point stance on this Wednesday.
00:12:00
Speaker 6: This is sharp money.
00:12:01
Speaker 1: But Patrick Maher and am All Shaw on vis in these sports betting network.
00:12:07
Speaker 2: We all know about the speed of sound, but had you ever thought about the sounds of speeding. Drive too fast and you could hear the sound of your vehicle crashing because one way or another speeding catches up with you.
00:12:16
Speaker 3: Paid for by knits up. It is over in the Twin Cities.
00:12:20
Speaker 2: I'm all very good series between the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins.
00:12:24
Speaker 3: We've made the case so many times.
00:12:25
Speaker 2: I know I have at least done the show for the Seattle Mariners to make a postseason run. Almost blew a five or onnly late, but hang on Andres Munio is to save for manager Scot's servas eight to seven win, take two or three from the Twinkies and the M's I'm all four back of the Jay. So the final wildcard spot still alive and kicking.
00:12:40
Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely, And I'll tell you what I think the series. They come from behind last night, they're down six to two, they score seven runs in the final two innings, win the game. They win this game eight to seven, hang on for dear life, because I think it was about eight to three here Ben, And then you see Milwaukee, I'm sorry, Minnesota make a push, they win the game. Can this be some positive momentum for them going forward?
00:12:59
Speaker 2: Some rainest seen, we shall see Joe Ryan in Minnesota going down as about dollars sixty CONCENTSUS favorites today, so dog cash as that one was way over the eight and a half total, which to get bet up about a run and looks like them all.
00:13:11
Speaker 3: We also will see a swing at least of a.
00:13:12
Speaker 2: Game in that the division in the Al Central where Twins coming into today three game lead, but they go down the Twins doing the Guardians up eight three. Really strong outing from Garrett Williams, the young the young starting. He's only made four or five starts now for Cleveland, but I've been really impressed with what I've seen out of him so far. Granted it was Kansas City at home, but still all Guardians today they lead eight three with one out to get in the top.
00:13:34
Speaker 3: Of the ninth.
00:13:34
Speaker 6: Yeah, this team, I still think they have an opportunity in this division simply because they're pitching compared to what you see with Minnesota. The inconsistency. Minnesota does have good frontline starting pitching, but it just doesn't seem to be consistent enough.
00:13:47
Speaker 3: That's been the big issue for the most part.
00:13:50
Speaker 2: At least got game again with Cleveland, as you would expect, taking on the Rolls at home, huge huge favorite, about two dollars consensus. A game did just go over though the ten counts all right, let's go to our three point stance. We're ready to go, and it's it's that time.
00:14:04
Speaker 3: Of year.
00:14:04
Speaker 5: Mall.
00:14:04
Speaker 2: It's early NFL training camp. You get a lot of comments from a lot of players. The one guy though, that has been making himself very much heard throughout the off season now in a training camp, Bill's wide receiver Stefan Diggs. Here were the latest comments coming out of Bill's training camp and Stefan Diggs earlier.
00:14:19
Speaker 7: Obviously, the way we lost.
00:14:20
Speaker 8: Was was just terrible in any regard.
00:14:22
Speaker 7: You know, you don't want to lose any game, but we've lost for a couple of years at this point, and we've been trying to get over to hunk and obviously called for a lot of frustration. But uh like as far as that, I was here, but he did have a conversation me and did have a conversation salt and water under the bridge now, but I could have attributed to like, I mean, family matters. I'm saying, I don't like dancing around things I don't like. I don't like those kind of questions.
00:14:44
Speaker 8: But black and white it is.
00:14:45
Speaker 6: Everybody has family.
00:14:46
Speaker 7: We had a conversation and everything it's all as well, water on the bridge and now we're back at work, and you know, I look at football, you know it's kind of hard.
00:14:54
Speaker 8: It's a business at the end of the day.
00:14:55
Speaker 7: But when you go out there and you fight tooth and now you put a.
00:14:58
Speaker 8: Lot of sweat equity into this, it starts.
00:15:00
Speaker 5: To for lack a fairly.
00:15:01
Speaker 7: So for me, I kind of keep everything in the house and saying by at the end of the day, we had those conversations and everything that we needed to be said with Say and we talked it out as man everybody involved.
00:15:12
Speaker 3: I think sweat equity, he could fill right in as a as a decent host.
00:15:15
Speaker 2: So that's a great It's a great lineste find Diggs in the reality is he's kind of made you know, he's made the headlines himself. So it's sort of ironic to now, you know, poopoo everything after you were the big storyline all summer.
00:15:25
Speaker 6: Well, I think the fact that Buffalo failed to get to the Super Bowl last year and many people halfway through the regular season thought they were the best team not only in the AFC but in the NFL. I think that's where you're seeing a.
00:15:34
Speaker 1: Lot of this.
00:15:35
Speaker 6: Also, Look, the Bills are the story in Western New York, There's no question about it. And this is a team where you feel like the window might be changing. The lose Tremaine Edmonds. He goes to the Bears on the defense side of the ball, that's a big loss. Where are they going to be offensively? The big question that always comes up is who's the second receiver? What's the consistency in the running game. Josh Allen does a tremendous job, but over to me, Ben, they need to find some other guys to step up besides Allen and Diggs.
00:16:00
Speaker 2: Sure, and I just wonder, is this a year to kind of go against the grant? Remember last going into last year, seemed like just about everybody in the sports betting space was all in on Buffalo.
00:16:09
Speaker 6: Yeah, all in.
00:16:10
Speaker 2: And they come out Week one just blast the La Rams and that only further the narrative. I can't find a single person who wants to buy an on Buffalo. Futures wise, this is still a front seven at least if you go to the defensive side, that iView is a top ten unit where fifth defensively against the run, eleventh against the pass. Last year, you still have a legitimate MVP candidate and quarterback Josh Allen, And it just kind of feels like this one offseason storyline has overshadowed everything else. That is, even though you mentioned some losses for the Bills still a really good football team.
00:16:37
Speaker 6: No, you're absolutely right about that. And I got to tell you we're talking about Buffalo and treating the Bills like they're a seven win team, and you're absolutely right. But to me, the problem is now, I mentioned the loss of Edmunds, you mentioned how good they are defensively, can they find the consistency? And I don't know where you guys come out, but I think this is the toughest division in football. When you look at the AFC East, You've got Buffalo, the Jets. I know people are like, I don't know where you guys stand on New York. I love the Jets this year. I think the Jets have a legitimate shot. They're not one of the top three teams, but they're in that second tier to me, behind Casey Cincinnatian, Buffalo and with Aaron Rodgers. Look, Burrow's great, Mahomes is great, but you're still this is a four time MVP. Garrett Wilson's going to be a superstar. It's the question of can this offensive line deliver consistently. Guys like Mackai Becton. If they can, I think they got a chance. And that's why I think some of the affinity for Buffalo is also or the Lusters kind of come off a little bit of Buffalo.
00:17:33
Speaker 3: Sure.
00:17:33
Speaker 2: And look, the all four teams in that division have six of the six hardest strength of schedules based on their opposing win totals. Four of them come from the AFC East. So it's very realistic and logical. The mall you could make that case only push back out look at it is remember last year in the AFC Wester where we had the similar conversation division wide and we went, man, is this going to be an impossible division?
00:17:53
Speaker 5: Yeah?
00:17:53
Speaker 2: Turned out not to be that all that great, largely because Las Vegas stunk and because Denver was just abysmal. Not that I expect between the Bills, Dolphins, Patriots and Jets just any you know, two of those teams to be woeful this year. But I always hesitate trying to make those grand statements when we have all this time in the offseason to hype up certain divisions, and sometimes it doesn't come to fruition.
00:18:15
Speaker 6: Yeah, you're absolutely right, and I think some ofing got to pay attention to. But right now the Bills are five to one to win the AFC, which I don't know, it's an okay number. I still don't see them going to Cincinnati potentially in the playoffs and winning. Or they've done it in Kansas City, but not during the postseason, and.
00:18:34
Speaker 2: That will be the big question, yeah, going forward, Speaking of teams trying to sustain what they have done in the past, Part two of our three point stance, we had this this tweet from Art Stapleton from covering the Giants camp, and it only took what we're Wednesday, July twenty sixth of the all. It only took till this point where we're getting the reports of how great guys look throwing the wide open guys in camp and quarterback Daniel Jones report out on this. It's how good Danie Jones looked in the first practice of training camp. I don't think I've ever seen him throw the ball harder. Was the exact quote that our Stapleton. So congratulations everybody, we did it. We waited this long to make sweeping statements about the arm strength of a quarterback who's that all off season to rest.
00:19:13
Speaker 6: You're absolutely right about that, But you do look at some of the things in terms of performance and how teams play, how guys perform. You get you start to get an idea, you get a gauge of it in terms of where they come out. So this would be interesting for me in terms of can he take that next step forward? Sure, and that's the big question Mark. I don't know. I'm not a believer in Daniel Jones, but maybe he proves me wrong this year. I know he had a good year last year. The Giants obviously thought he had a great year. I'm just not ready to kind of line up with that just yet.
00:19:39
Speaker 5: Though.
00:19:39
Speaker 2: It was interesting that the reporter he asked Cole Beasley if he agreed without because Besy caught one of the touchdown passes, and Visa's like, yeah, I agree, a ton of heat on it. It's like Cole Beasley, I mean, the fact your head is on straight is that is a good accomplishment to be proud of the fact that you hold onto a football. Good for you, man, because I don't know how you're still in the league.
00:19:55
Speaker 6: But I there, Well, I'm just to be honest with you, I'm s prize called Beasley's on a roster.
00:20:02
Speaker 3: That's my whole point. Dustin's given me that look like he knows what I'm talking about.
00:20:07
Speaker 9: Well for Daniel Jones, what's fascinating about this as a Giants fan is that I'm very low on the Giants this year, just based on the obvious regressions that should take place after what happened a year ago with them and that incredible run they head into the postseason and beating Minnesota.
00:20:22
Speaker 4: But I'm not gonna lie. I did get a little titillated by that tweet.
00:20:25
Speaker 9: The juices were flowing a bit because if you think about Daniel Jones, he basically didn't have a legitimate head coach his first couple of years in the NFL. It's his first off off season where he already knows the offensive system and now they can add more to it. And I trust this regime from GM to head coach and everyone in between. Where now I'm like, maybe being low on the Giants with Saquon back in the mix and the better defense and some more weapons to throw to, maybe I'm wrong to be down on the Giants.
00:20:58
Speaker 6: Here's the thing about Daniel Jones. So you mentioned about the coaching. To me, if you're a greater or an elite player. You're greater elite regardless of whether the fact that you've got Richie co tite no or.
00:21:08
Speaker 4: No coordinators and systems when you're a young quarterback. No, I don't agree with that.
00:21:14
Speaker 9: We the bad coaching in the NFL has killed the careers of many talented quarterbacks inability to adjust, to adapt, to put systems around the skill set that that player has. And the one thing I loved about what Dable did last year is he played into Daniel Jones's strengths.
00:21:31
Speaker 3: I love a good rich co type mentioned that's all. That's all I'll add to this.
00:21:34
Speaker 6: Coaches.
00:21:35
Speaker 4: Bubby Brewster was that his quarterback.
00:21:37
Speaker 6: Bbby brister Bubby Bubby. It was there for a short time with some Pittsburgh previous to that. Uh, look, I get what you're saying, but I think guys just find ways to make plays. You may not be able to make all the pleasure offense may not be flowing in a way that would under a good coach. So I don't know. And to me, though, when I look at this Giants team you've got, they should make the playoffs simply because they're in a bad conference. The AFC's got about ten teams that could potentially make the playoffs. The NFC's got realistically three, and then anybody else can make it. Well, I'm gonna throw Minnesota in the MIxS fourteen.
00:22:14
Speaker 2: Last time I checked, you've got seven playoff spots. Yeah, exactly one of those NFC teams. By the way, just going out here the third of the three point stands. Where now that betting is so mainstream, I like that we get reporters asking coaches about win totals and stuff, and so Sean McVay was asked about his six and a half win total and he said, they don't believe in us. Whatever I say, I'm going to get in trouble right now. I'm just picturing that in the McVay boys, just all jacked up, high pitched energy. So howbout you go?
00:22:37
Speaker 3: You know, really you really believe McVeigh, you gonna go seven to ten? I don't know.
00:22:42
Speaker 2: We'll see in this upcoming season. I speaking of coaches talking to reporters, we have some sound from Big ten media days. We'll get into that conference as we continue right here on Sharp Money.
00:22:57

Milwaukee back on top of a game and a half over the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central. How about this brus only scored nine runs in the series, seven of them come in the seventh inning or later.
00:23:27
Speaker 6: Wow, that's big time. We know the Reds events issues with the bullpen and shows once again. So Milwaukee ends up taking what seven out of nine or six out of nine?
00:23:36
Speaker 2: So out of the All Star Break Brewers win it was seven of nine and for the season that is now ten of thirteen from Cincinnati season series over Brews now in the I wouldn't say driver's seat, but a lot of people figured that this would be the stretch where Cincinnati took over the division.
00:23:54
Speaker 3: It did not happen that way.
00:23:55
Speaker 6: I still think Milwaukee's the better team. The offense is not on par with the Reds, but the pitching isn't. At the end of the day. Pitching matters absolutely.
00:24:02
Speaker 4: By the way, Zach Gallen two earned in the first three innings.
00:24:05
Speaker 9: There, oh, Saint Louis Cardinals the top middle of the third too, nothing, And maybe we could get a four run spot somehow, four earned against Gallon. And maybe you and I am all our tickets on. Blake Snell will feel a lot better tomorrow morning.
00:24:19
Speaker 6: And you're absolutely right about that. But I'll tell you what Flerty's always had that one hiccup. E did a nice shob of getting out of the first inning. Let's see if you can continue this. Diamondbacks have had runners on base in the first two winnings so far.
00:24:30
Speaker 3: Flerty threw about thirty pitches in the first inning. Somehow got out of it.
00:24:33
Speaker 9: I just need runs assigned to Zach Gallan, sure, that's all I need seem to be responsible for runs?
00:24:41
Speaker 2: Was that you think it was somebody you encountered, somebody on your way back to the studio in the sports book Dustin, that might have been You think maybe a Blake Snell oot of the way he was cheering up profusely at every pitch.
00:24:50
Speaker 9: Look, the south point is a legendary sports book. It's one of the best places to watch a game in the city, if not the best. And but the problem is that every sports book there are certain characters you run into and the yelling about every moment of action of your bet. Guy as someone I just passed as I was really coming back from relieving myself in the restroom, I hear.
00:25:10
Speaker 6: Let's go go go go.
00:25:12
Speaker 9: No no no, and like I look up and I'm like, what is he watching? Is he watching soccer or something, or like even the tbt' to the TBT, he's yelling about baseball. And to me, there are certain sports like I don't like it because he's by himself. He wants everyone to look at him. And by the way, if you make eye contact with a person like this, that is essentially engaging in a conversation, and it's impossible to disengage. They will follow you all the way to your car and talk to you about their bets, So you have to be careful. I just think that baseball is a sport you cannot be yelling about during any action plays Like I get it in football here and there, I get it in basketball here and there, But you cannot be yelling watching.
00:25:53
Speaker 3: Baseball, especially when it's in the third inning, like all the games are.
00:25:56
Speaker 8: Yeah. No.
00:25:57
Speaker 2: The close thing I happened to me was in the in the Venetian Sports I had an eleven team parlay NBA Summer League WNBA, and he lost. He lost because a WNBA game stayed under by one, and just was trying to tell everybody who would listen it was, you know whatever, five bucks to win ten grand and like, I'm so, I have no sympathy. You're betting on the summer league in WNBA. Come not like, look individually fine, but eleven likes together?
00:26:19
Speaker 3: What are we doing?
00:26:20
Speaker 6: I yeah, exactly. It's not even about the fact that it's summer league in WNBA. It's the fact that it's eleven teams, right, I mean, just urage to treat it like.
00:26:27
Speaker 2: It's you know, you're in personal funeral space and giving your monologue to everybody who walks by within a fifteen foot radius. Anyway, Anyways, speaking of monologues, like that transition to all we go to big ten, we go to big ten media days, we had we had the sound earlier, which was you know, more in the fun line of and kind of making fun of the Charlotte head coach if Pogi with his team not getting covered. But a couple of teams of all we'll talk about who are certainly getting plenty of coverage, some for good reasons, some for bad. Let's start with the team in Ohio state. That is going to be You're no.
00:26:58
Speaker 6: I was going to say, before you run the clip, if you tell me what the question is, I can pretty much tell you what the Ryan Day answer is.
00:27:04
Speaker 2: That's also fair. Well, we have a clip, so it must be interesting. Yeah, yeah, right, one of the favorites here of the Big ten.
00:27:08
Speaker 9: I don't know what the question was, but I can just give you a little synopsis of the clip without giving away too much. He he was talking about his approach as being the man in charge of the Buckeyes program.
00:27:20
Speaker 6: I think it would be something like, well, you know, listen, I was gonna get asked, actually a football question, being in charge. So we've got great coaches on our staff. You know, we've got great talent. We're gonna try and to do the best job we can't. I mean, that guy, there's nobody more boring in an interview in college football than Ryan Day.
00:27:35
Speaker 2: All right, well, I fall asleep in the next thirty seconds, let's find out do you have NARCOLEPSI that the.
00:27:39
Speaker 10: Way that our staff's designed, you know, I think we have a great staff, and you know, it has allowed me to jump around a little bit more. Once we get into the teeth of the season, I just you know, I know how it's gonna go. Probably for me, I'm gonna end up being right involved with it again. But that being said, as the season wears on, I have to be conscious this year of not getting too locked into the offense and making.
00:28:00
Speaker 8: Sure that I have, you know, a handle on everything that's going on.
00:28:03
Speaker 10: And I think, you know, certainly Brian running the offense and being a part of that, and justin Fry with the O line, you know, some of the other additions we've had to the staff will allow.
00:28:11
Speaker 8: Us to do that.
00:28:13
Speaker 3: You basically, at least the first sentence, I was like, Oh.
00:28:16
Speaker 9: Has he been accused of just focusing only on the offense and not looking at the defense as all?
00:28:20
Speaker 4: That's it sounded like he was a little defensive about it.
00:28:23
Speaker 6: Correct. And here's the other problem, though, I don't think he is as aggressive offensively as he should be, considering in his tenure. They've had the best offensive college football over the last four years. You know, the criticism that he's gotten is unwarranted. I saw somewhere someone said, if you lose to Michigan's gonna be fired. With Jim Harbaugh's two and five against Ohio State, here's another thing I would point out. He lost to Clemson in a game where the controversial call when a coupda knocked the ball out of the receiver's hands and then you saw it was picked up and by Fuller in return for a touchdown didn't count. They lose to Michigan twice. They did lose to Oregon. I don't think they've lost to an unranked team. I mean the six tys that he's had. He's lost two games in Big Ten play in four years. The problem in college football, whether it's Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, USC, the fan bases are just completely delusional, right Like, if you don't go. You know, Ohio State has a streak of scoring twenty one points. They've scored twenty one points in every game he's been the head coach. It's really insane to me how people are like, well, I can't beat Michigan. Michigan's got a great football team. I know people don't want to hear that from in Columbus or in other parts of Ohio or Buckeye fans. They got a great, great football team. If Blake Corn plays, they probably beat TCU and they score on that opening drive. Yeah, the quarterback play hasn't been there, So I don't understand the criticism. It's completely unwarranted.
00:29:43
Speaker 2: What's more ridiculous jimarbas End coach getting the suspension for the reasons he got it, or the fact that the sports betters out there are betting East Carolina plus thirty five in the hook like they know the final score and that somehow Michigan is not going to be able to just wipe the face off of a bad pirate team at the Big House.
00:30:00
Speaker 6: I tell you what, thirty five and a half, it's a big number, but in the first half, Michigan's probably If it's less than twenty one, the Wolverines be up. I think Michigan has a chance this year legitimately to win the national title if JJ McCarthy can deliver everywhere else. I think they're solid. I shouldn't say solid, they are very good to great. The receivers. They don't have great receivers, but you don't need great receivers. You need guys just to make place Colston, it was at Loveland Colston the tight end, They've got really good one there. This is a good, good football team. If they can win at Penn State in November eleventh and beat Ohio State in November twenty fifth, this team has a chance to run the table and going defeed.
00:30:39
Speaker 2: It sure cur favorites right now Michigan and Ohio State in the Big Ten. About plus one sixty five At DraftKings, I'm at a team on the other end of the spectrum. A lot of questions being asked about Northwestern's program, where they will be at in the new head coach David Brown was asked about, all right, how do you approach things heading into a year with so many off the field distractions.
00:30:56
Speaker 8: I dreamt of playing in the Big Ten became a reality.
00:31:01
Speaker 11: But an opportunity to work in the Big Ten, coach in the Big Ten and coach and mentor these young men.
00:31:08
Speaker 8: Is something that I don't take lightly.
00:31:11
Speaker 11: I vividly remember in nineteen ninety five watching Northwestern beat ninth rank Notre Dame.
00:31:19
Speaker 8: Incredible. It still sticks with me to this day.
00:31:23
Speaker 11: The following year, I'm sitting in the stands with a childhood friend watching Northwestern take on Wisconsin. An improbable circumstances, Ron Dayne fumbles with under a minute left to go.
00:31:38
Speaker 8: A few plays later to find Steve Schner.
00:31:41
Speaker 11: Connect with Dwayne Bates on a double move and one of the most improbable Northwestern wins in Northwestern history.
00:31:48
Speaker 8: Again, this opportunity is a.
00:31:51
Speaker 11: Dream come true to be a part of Big Ten football.
00:31:54
Speaker 2: Heik if I was if I was being grilled and being asked to deflect on something, I would definitely bring up Ron Daye. And you know, Steve Schnurr is great, great talking points to just sort of deflect any any real conversation.
00:32:05
Speaker 3: Nice speech. That was a really good speech.
00:32:07
Speaker 6: Tell you one thing, I thought I was going to take a nap. I mean, that guy was not exactly a bastion of entertainment or excitement.
00:32:15
Speaker 4: The vibe I was wondering.
00:32:16
Speaker 9: I was torn because I was like, oh man, this guy sounds really passionate about this opportunity. And at the same point I was like, yeah, I would be too if it was something I was not ready for and probably wasn't going to happen sometime in the next five to seven years for me.
00:32:29
Speaker 4: Like he's in over his skis.
00:32:31
Speaker 6: Well, let's see what happens. From a coaching standpoint, I don't worry about guys in terms of the press conference. Not everybody's strength is in public speaking or where they're comfortable in front of the microphone, so that I'm not going to criticize. But I think it's a great opportunity right And by the way, he's from your home state Wisconsin.
00:32:46
Speaker 2: Wisconsinoma State, great D two school in Minnesota, the Winoa State.
00:32:54
Speaker 6: But you look at a Northwestern to me is a program with deep pockets from an alumni base, you can really do well. They're beautiful campus, they've got a great football facility. While Shrion, I mean, if they'd maybe cut the grass once a year, might be a little bit more attractive. The guys that have a little bit of speed.
00:33:11
Speaker 2: I've been there once Tyrrel Sutton ran for like three hundred yards and a fifty two to forty eight win over I believe it was Jim Sorgie's Wisconsin Badgers.
00:33:22
Speaker 3: I am not John. Sorry, John Stockow's Wisconsin back.
00:33:24
Speaker 6: I have not been to welsh Ran That's one of the few places in the big time I've not been interesting interesting.
00:33:29
Speaker 4: I don't win there. You can't win at Vanderbilt. You can't win at Georgia Tech.
00:33:33
Speaker 3: It was one of the weird we win at Georgia Tech.
00:33:35
Speaker 6: Bobby Dodd won a national title. I Bobby Ross won a national title in nineteen ninety.
00:33:39
Speaker 4: Do the math on how long ago nineteen ninety was.
00:33:41
Speaker 6: Let's go to commercial.
00:33:42
Speaker 2: He Okay, that's probably a fair statement. We'll wrap up the next hour visa Sharp Money right after this.

00:34:44
Speaker 3: We'll have some packed twel football to talk about.
00:34:45
Speaker 2: Jordan Watkins in fifteen minutes, a little more NFL with the former head coach Jay Gruden in about forty five. Here on Sharp Money, I'm going to play some Debtor Alive right now, mall. We didn't get to the Kirk farentstound bite though from Iowa, which I kind of want to hear Dustin if we have that pulled up just because because I love him. Any anything to do with punting and Iowa.
00:35:05
Speaker 6: It's a match made in Evan, absolutely right. I'm surprised this team doesn't punt on first down. It'd be better for their defense because then they wouldn't lose yard to juh offense.
00:35:13
Speaker 9: We we talked about the punter is like the second best offensive weapon and defensive weapon on this team.
00:35:18
Speaker 6: Why is he only the second best?
00:35:19
Speaker 4: Well, because they still have a running back. They still believe in the running back.
00:35:23
Speaker 6: They do, but it's kind of hard when the entire defense knows in the first and second down play you're gonna run the ball.
00:35:28
Speaker 4: Yeah, so I guessed.
00:35:28
Speaker 9: At Media Days, Kirk Farrance was asked about their punter, Tory Taylor. He's a senior, and I guess he's really good at punting. You would assume so, because this is the soliloquy that Kirk Ferrance went on about punting and his punter when he was asked about him.
00:35:45
Speaker 12: You know, I've really kind of learned the importance of the great punter. In nineteen eighty one, my first year ever at Iowa, and we're.
00:35:52
Speaker 8: Fortunate to have Reggie Roby.
00:35:53
Speaker 12: I believe as a junior that year as amazing punters I've ever seen, so.
00:36:00
Speaker 5: Like it was a big part of the.
00:36:01
Speaker 12: Reason we were Big ten champions out here and played in the Rose Bowl, and then certainly playing and coaching and pro football really developed and appreciation for howp punters can affect and impact the game. And we're built, you know, we're kind of a defensive orin and optit if you will. And the value of having a great kicking game along with the good solid defense, because you an opportunity maybe to have a little bit more success that way. So when we have a player of toius capabilities and talents, you know, we're certainly going to try to utilize utilize that in a smart way.
00:36:30
Speaker 3: I love it, you know, for the immaculate grid.
00:36:33
Speaker 2: It goes like Dustin and I love a good Reggie Robi mentioned if you ever get Tampa Bay, Miami and your grid, it's a good Paul.
00:36:38
Speaker 9: But like guys, Amal, you made the mistake of thinking nineteen ninety was recent for the last segment ID.
00:36:44
Speaker 6: Thirty three years ago.
00:36:44
Speaker 8: I don't blame you.
00:36:45
Speaker 9: I talked about nineteen ninety five when I was ten as if it was seven years ago.
00:36:49
Speaker 5: So I get it.
00:36:50
Speaker 9: But here's the thing, it's twenty twenty, twenty twenty three year of our Lord. When does Iowa embrace the forward pass?
00:36:58
Speaker 6: Well, I was just getting rid of the comment on that. By the way, Chris Doring was very confident in talking about nineteen ninety five yesterday with US so don't give me a hard time about the nineties. Here's what I understand. He was on Hayden Fry staff from nineteen eighty one to nineteen eighty nine. Hayden Fry was a tremendous coach. Iowa was ranked number one or number two in the country in eighty five with Chuck Long was a Heisman finalist. They had a great offense running harmon on that team. How is it and all this time as the head coach of the Hawkeyes you are so anti offense. Don't tell me you can't win in Iowa City. Why are they so opposed just sitting there and saying, you know what, guys, let's make some place due. They had Tim Dwight on the perimeter. They've had some good offensive skilled guys in the past. We know the tight ends that have come out of Iowa. Why does this team just sit there and say, now, you know what, we're gonna try and beat Ohio State. Outside of that one game where Haskins was terrible in Iowa City, why do you sit there and think you're gonna win games in today's day and age by scoring twenty one points and holding the opponent of twenty it's like walking around saying, yeay man, I got all my information on my palm pilot. What are you kidding me?
00:37:58
Speaker 9: I mean, like, oh, that's great, But like you guys have these teams where, no matter what happens, you're always on the wrong side of them. When I think Iowa's good, they stink. When I think Iowa stinks, they somehow win. Like I don't know, like going back to Ricky Stanzy, like bad things always happen when I bet on Iowa.
00:38:17
Speaker 4: I just generally have to avoid their games.
00:38:19
Speaker 9: Because I never have a vibe for what they are because you just never know what you're getting.
00:38:23
Speaker 2: I'm still mad that Iowa beat Missouri and the twenty ten Insight Bowl. I'm still fuming about that.
00:38:28
Speaker 6: And how about the game against LSU and the I think it was like five Capitol One Bowl. Drew Tait saves their bacon, they didn't even use the time out, and the last play of the game, somehow LSU's defense lows two receivers to get deep and they win the game. But it's just the ineptitude that's been there with Kirk Farrens's team and then his son Brian Farrens. The offensive coordinator has been so bad. The Hawkeyes and their famus. They have tremendous fans support the fact that they have been given this ineptness and offense. You mentioned Ricky Stancy and some of these other guys. When you watch a Hawkeys game, you know how good the defense this is going to be. You'll see a receiver wide open. You're like, dude, they're gonna get a twenty yard pass. No shot ball is thrown about seventeen yards. The receivers looking around like dude, why the hell did I choose to come here to play receiver?
00:39:11
Speaker 9: It looks like someone's playing out of position at quarterby exactly.
00:39:14
Speaker 2: Basically, eight is the win totals juiced over minus one forty five. And the best thing you can say for I was the fact that they avoid Ohio State and Michigan on the schedule this year.
00:39:22
Speaker 6: They do once again, that's a huge benefit they get. They're at state college. So I think it could be a lost When you mentioned the eight, it's going to be a balance of can you win an Ames always a rivalry game in the Syhawks series at State College. I mentioned they should beat Michigan State to Purdue at home they got to go to Wisconsin. Another tough game now that Luke Fickle takes over Brailer Out and in my opinion the best running back in college football. Minnesota is always tough. That's the Floyd of Rosedale, isn't that? Iowa Minnesota, that's always a great rivalry. Matchup at Nebraska another tough one at the end of the year. One two, three, over.
00:39:57
Speaker 3: Eight is juiced minus one forty five too.
00:40:01
Speaker 6: I can't play it. I think they're right about eight wins. I don't know if they get to nine. I think they lose at Wisconsin. I think they lose a Penn State, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa State. They've got to go two and one in those games to get over you will see.
00:40:16
Speaker 2: All I know is the last time I like, we're talking about punting so much with that, with that Kirk parents clip. I remember reading the recently released David marinis book on the Life of Jim Thorpe.
00:40:25
Speaker 3: Great book.
00:40:25
Speaker 2: That's the last time I can remember seeing the word punting used in such a such a vociferous state. Was David Marinis's outstanding book. And a guy who played football in the twenties.
00:40:33
Speaker 6: This guy's showing off here, isn't he? Yeah he knows how to read. Yeah, I know exactly.
00:40:37
Speaker 3: I hay to read a book a month. What's wrong with that?
00:40:40
Speaker 6: A month?
00:40:41
Speaker 3: Yeah? Book a month.
00:40:43
Speaker 9: I only read on the toilet, so that means I've got to eat more fun if you read finish this book.
00:40:47
Speaker 2: For immaculate gred purposes reading a sports book a month. So I'm reading the Did you ever read a Ball?
00:40:52
Speaker 6: Four?
00:40:52
Speaker 2: The Jim Bouton book in nineteen sixty nine that became super famous for because it was like an inside locker like the first book. Yeah, it was like inside the locker room, and the commissioner Bowie Qan wanted basically tried to blacklist him. Really interesting book. Actually, even fifty years later, I believe you.
00:41:06
Speaker 6: My philosophy on reading is if it's going to be something in the self help or self improvement category. Otherwise I don't have an interest in reading about history. I'll just read something on Wikipedia. In about ten minutes, I'm like, I'll summarize it. He was criticizing me because I do that with movies. I'll start a movie and I'm like, let me read the premise of this. Let me see if it's worth wasting ninety minutes to two hundred and twenty minutes. And then I said, ah, it's not worth it. I got the synopsis of it.
00:41:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, I just thought i'd point that out.
00:41:29
Speaker 6: I'm impressed that you read camp, but I was more impressed that you read a book a month.
00:41:35
Speaker 2: You know, we go up to you know, you have the lake in Wisconsin, you're doing your NFL college football prep, and then you do a little reading. Some get a summer shandy Drivet pass.
00:41:44
Speaker 6: What is a summer shandy?
00:41:45
Speaker 3: That's a great beer from lighting Coogle.
00:41:48
Speaker 6: All right, I'm sorry. I apologize the way Sean answered you and Dustin answered for you know, it was like I asked, what is a miller?
00:41:55
Speaker 4: Like it's okay, It's it's okay, summer It's good.
00:41:59
Speaker 3: I will say. Spot cow has kind of become overrated, though.
00:42:01
Speaker 2: Stop ever, everybody talks about spotted cow like it is God's.
00:42:05
Speaker 3: Guests from the Wisconsin Heavens.
00:42:07
Speaker 9: Ben, I had spotted cow one time in two thousand and nine, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
00:42:13
Speaker 6: Well, here's the question, why have you not had one?
00:42:14
Speaker 2: Since it's illegal to sell outside of the state of Wisconsin, Minnesota bars have been have been have been fined for selling it illegally.
00:42:22
Speaker 9: Bars in New York City have been shut down because they would drive out with trucks and vans, fill up with cases of spotted cow and drive back across the country and they get in trouble for it.
00:42:31
Speaker 6: So why is it illegal to sell outside of the state of Wisconsin.
00:42:35
Speaker 3: You ask the New Glarius Brewing company.
00:42:37
Speaker 4: They wanted as a Wisconsin thing, a Wisconsin specialty.
00:42:40
Speaker 3: It's what Culvers used to be before they sold out.
00:42:43
Speaker 6: Okay, can we get some references that I know what the hell is Culver.
00:42:48
Speaker 8: Fast food?
00:42:48
Speaker 4: That I've never had either? So which is a believe me? If there's as that I haven't had, not Culvers.
00:42:55
Speaker 6: Where's the first one?
00:42:56
Speaker 2: The double deluxe bacon, cheese butterburger with a concrete mixer.
00:43:00
Speaker 6: Mic, does that come with a cardiologist?
00:43:02
Speaker 10: You know what?
00:43:03
Speaker 4: This body looks like it needs a little bit more butter and beef together.
00:43:08
Speaker 6: Where is Culver's a Wisconsin things?
00:43:10
Speaker 3: It's a butter burger. Yes, butter burgers are their staple.
00:43:13
Speaker 6: The what's the place in Canada that's very famous?
00:43:16
Speaker 12: Uh?
00:43:17
Speaker 6: Tim Hortons, thank you?
00:43:18
Speaker 4: That's coffee and donuts stuff.
00:43:19
Speaker 11: No.
00:43:19
Speaker 6: No, My point was, like, give me some place that like at least I know, like Culver's. Come on, I've only got to Wisconsin twice.
00:43:25
Speaker 9: Okay, Vegas is getting a water burger. You could try their friesze.
00:43:28
Speaker 6: I know what a burger. They're from Texas. They're the They're open twenty four hours in Texas. That's why everybody knows them.
00:43:33
Speaker 9: I'm sick of people comparing them to in and Out. They're not even in the same class. It's like comparing Iowa to Ohio State's offense.
00:43:39
Speaker 6: In and out, and I'm so happy because I used to live close to it in in and out. Here in Vegas, thank god, they have the worst fries ever. They should be banned for making French fries.
00:43:48
Speaker 9: So I agreed with that for a while. I've grown to incre appreciate the simplicity of them.
00:43:53
Speaker 6: I don't know why doesn't change the fact that their fries are terrible.
00:43:56
Speaker 2: Well, if you're waiting in a thirty car line every time, you expect a little bit more bang for your buck on them.
00:44:01
Speaker 6: How do people do that?
00:44:02
Speaker 8: Like?
00:44:02
Speaker 6: Are these people going to live forever? How do you have that kind of time to wait for an item that you're gonna eat in like four minutes for thirty minutes.
00:44:10
Speaker 2: The fact that you could drive it out at eleven am, three pm, six pm, ten pm and it's the same line, the same line with the exact same cards every time.
00:44:20
Speaker 4: Well, don't go inside and think you're going to cheat the line.
00:44:22
Speaker 5: It takes to that song.
00:44:23
Speaker 6: By the way, this segment was great. This entire segment was nonsense, just like the Iowa offense.
00:44:27
Speaker 3: Thank you, that's what we're all trying to circle.
00:44:30
Speaker 4: We did punt on it.
00:44:32
Speaker 2: Hey eight on the win total for Iowa hard pass, Yeah, exactly. Twenty twenty three. We'll talk some Pac twelve football as we start our final hour of Sharp Money with Jordan Watkins right after this
Speaker 1: This is Sharp Money with Patrick Maher and a maal Shaw on feast End Please Sports.
00:22:57
Speaker 1: This is Sharp Money, but Patrick maher on them All show on vs in these sports betting network Download.
00:23:05
Speaker 2: The DraftKings app today and new customers can at five dollars and get one hundred and fifty bucks and bonuses. Instantly use promo code vs in when you sign up Seedraftkings dot com slash sportsbook for full terms and conditions. It's over at the kegamall three nothing.

00:44:32
