00:00:02
Speaker 1: Hey there, folks.
00:00:02
Speaker 2: It is Saturday, October 21st, and we now have our number two recommendation for sci-fi horror on this last weekend before Halloween. And this movie features two very familiar and lovable actors doing very unfamiliar.
00:00:20
Speaker 1: Things, though.
00:00:21
Speaker 2: And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. These two are we love, love. These two actors, you know what? They're both kind of in a role that I don't know if I love either one of them.
00:00:34
Speaker 1: It doesn't really.
00:00:36
Speaker 2: endear you to either one of them necessarily, but they're fantastic.
00:00:39
Speaker 1: Yes.
00:00:40
Speaker 3: We love Micah Monroe. She's our scream queen. Um, she, of course it follows watcher, long legs, villains. Micah Monroe is the shit. She is so good. And then Jack Lacey, he's got tons of movie critics, but I think most people will know him from white Lotus 2021. He is so good. First season. Yes. Where he is the newlywed. Um, and his mom comes to like crash the party. Um, But he is so good in White Lotus, and he is so good in our number two sci-fi horror guaranteed hit, Significant Other. I absolutely love this movie. This is one of my favorites.
00:01:20
Speaker 1: It's so unexpected.
00:01:21
Speaker 2: This movie comes out of nowhere, and it keeps coming out of nowhere with things that happen. This is all, this is, the first what of it is a relationship movie. How much of it before it turns into horror?
00:01:36
Speaker 3: Right.
00:01:37
Speaker 1: Necessarily. Because there's drama.
00:01:38
Speaker 3: There's drama. But it starts out like you think you're watching a backwoods horror movie. Like they're hiking. He's going to propose. It's literally got all the hallmarks of a backwoods horror movie where either there are people or creatures in the woods that are about to like terrorize them. But this has such a twist to that that you could not even imagine. begin to predict i would actually argue if you plan on watching this and we really recommend you do don't read the what people what does the synopsis.
00:02:09
Speaker 2: Yeah don't don't let this one go yeah go into this.
00:02:12
Speaker 3: Don't don't read too much about it because it'll take away the surprise there are a couple there are at least two really good twists that we would hope you would actually let unfold and not know ahead of time.
00:02:24
Speaker 2: You know what we're going to be really careful in this review Because it is. It will ruin the movie if you get too much of a heads up about some of this because there are moments that you, I can almost guarantee your jaw is going to drop. Right?
00:02:37
Speaker 3: You're going to say, wait, what is happening?
00:02:40
Speaker 1: What am I watching? And then the movie takes off. It's so good.
00:02:42
Speaker 3: Okay, the release date was October 7th, 2022. So they were smart. They were releasing this around the Halloween time. And I did not see this in theaters. I don't believe. No, we found this gem streaming. But the synopsis is, significant other follows a young couple, Harry and Ruth, who take a remote backpacking trip through the Pacific Northwest. But things take a dark turn when they realize they may not be alone. And yes, these two are so well cast. Just to play off each other, the back and forth, the writing, the dialogue, it's so good.
00:03:24
Speaker 2: And he plays the exact opposite. same character. It's a kind of a charming bordering on arrogance.
00:03:35
Speaker 3: Throw in some nerdiness.
00:03:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, and a smart doofus. He's the same guy from White Lotus.
00:03:41
Speaker 3: He really is.
00:03:42
Speaker 1: He's this guy. Not as jerky as he was in White Lotus.
00:03:45
Speaker 3: He's a little more goofy in this movie.
00:03:47
Speaker 1: But good. He's nailed something.
00:03:50
Speaker 3: Yes, and Micah's character is... Like just an anxiety-ridden girl who's afraid of her own shadow, basically. She doesn't want to go hiking. She's afraid of the woods. She's afraid of commitment. She's afraid of everything. So she plays this very, I mean, like you said, not anybody was super likable, but she's just a nervous character. But it's good because it sets the energy up. And the tone for the movie because her anxiety gives you anxiety. You're asking yourself, what is going on here? Why do I feel nervous right now? Why am I on the edge of my seat? I'm not even really sure. But the scenery is gorgeous. You know I love hiking. And so just I feel like I was out there with them with their backpacks. And in the Pacific Northwest, it's so gorgeous.
00:04:40
Speaker 1: That added to the horror for me because it's just hiking.
00:04:42
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:04:43
Speaker 1: The idea of it.
00:04:44
Speaker 3: It's terrifying. In fact, I believe, because we just rewatched this. There were several times with the movie you were like, oh, hell no. Oh, no. Oh, hell no.
00:04:51
Speaker 1: This never would have happened to us.
00:04:54
Speaker 3: Ever. Have you ever been camping and hiking?
00:04:58
Speaker 1: Not voluntarily.
00:05:00
Speaker 3: Like how old were you?
00:05:02
Speaker 1: When I did which?
00:05:03
Speaker 3: Hiking and, well, no, like hiking to camp.
00:05:07
Speaker 1: Oh, God, no.
00:05:08
Speaker 2: I've never hiked for the purpose of camping. No.
00:05:11
Speaker 3: No.
00:05:11
Speaker 1: I've had to sleep outside before.
00:05:14
Speaker 2: And again, it wasn't my choice.
00:05:16
Speaker 1: It was an assignment. I had to work.
00:05:18
Speaker 2: Yes, it was a GMA thing. And slept outside in a tent. Don't ever want to do it again. The hikes I take, you've seen the hikes I take. You've seen the places that I do hike. They are essentially walks in which you need a better pair of shoes. It's not that difficult. And it's not close to sunrise or sunset. middle of the day and we got plenty of time to call to get rescued whatever.
00:05:40
Speaker 3: And working cell phones with self cell.
00:05:42
Speaker 2: Coverage strong signals yes full bars on all of my.
00:05:46
Speaker 1: Hikes oh my goodness yeah but yes it's.
00:05:49
Speaker 2: That thing everybody you know what even cabin in the woods hiking like some of these movies you give a particular setting a house a ship a Right. All of these things set you up for a horror movie because of those settings.
00:06:04
Speaker 1: And yes, hiking works. That's another subgenre.
00:06:07
Speaker 2: I know.
00:06:08
Speaker 1: I love a hiking horror. A hiking horror movie. Ritual. You could start naming them right now.
00:06:12
Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. They're so good. Rotten Tomatoes. The critics liked it 74% and the audience gave it 64%. So the critics' consensus... Wait, what was theirs again? 74% was the critics, 64% was the audience. So the critics said some surprising touches... and a generally thoughtful approach help elevate significant other above standard wilderness survival stories. Okay, so they call it like a wilderness survival, but there is absolutely a sci-fi. In fact, it's described in the Rotten Tomatoes as a sci-fi horror thriller because there is a sci-fi element to it which I'm sure people who are listening are thinking, wait, how is this a sci-fi movie? Y'all just described a hiking and some threat in the woods.
00:07:08
Speaker 1: Pacific Northwest. Pacific Northwest.
00:07:11
Speaker 3: Sci-fi?
00:07:12
Speaker 1: Sci-fi.
00:07:13
Speaker 3: You can figure it out. I just plucked a few of the reviews. The fantastic performances from Monroe and Lacey and the twisty fashion of the science fiction horror yarn make Significant Other a heady trip with an earned payoff. Yes, there is a good payoff. And this was another one I loved. Never overstays its welcome. and builds up to its shocks by having us get to know Harry and Ruth before it turns the tables on the audience.
00:07:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, it really does.
00:07:48
Speaker 2: You're being manipulated along with characters in the movie being manipulated, but we're the ones that don't know about it.
00:07:58
Speaker 1: It is a cool twist. This is a fun movie.
00:08:01
Speaker 3: And you have to have two solid actors because, yes, there were a few other characters in the movie, but basically the entire film you are watching these two play off one another. And the good news is we always talk about the run time. This is an hour 24. Really?
00:08:16
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:08:18
Speaker 3: It's such a quick, fun movie, and it doesn't require a lot of your attention because you just get pulled into it. their relationship, really. And you're trying to figure out what's going on. And there's a scene where they rewind and they explain something because there's a period of time where you actually cannot figure out how one of the characters has figured something out. You're like, how did I not see it? How did that character see it? And then they do a rewind and they explain a lot. So you kind of have to wait for some of the explanations and.
00:08:52
Speaker 1: Okay, you're doing your Nikki thing. You're giving away too much now.
00:08:54
Speaker 3: I'm giving away too much?
00:08:55
Speaker 1: You're starting to give away too much. You're starting to do the Nikki thing.
00:08:58
Speaker 3: Yep. Okay.
00:08:59
Speaker 1: Yep, there you go. For folks that don't know.
00:09:01
Speaker 3: We should explain who Nikki is. Nikki is my best friend, and she always loves to tell you what the ending of the movie is before you see it.
00:09:07
Speaker 1: It's the worst.
00:09:08
Speaker 3: And she'll ask you, can I tell you how it ends?
00:09:10
Speaker 1: No, Nikki, you can't. Stop talking.
00:09:13
Speaker 3: So no, no, you cannot tell us how it ends. I don't want to know. I'm not the person who wanted to know what I was getting for Christmas. I wanted it to stay wrapped. And I wanted to be excited and surprised when I opened it.
00:09:24
Speaker 1: I did shake the boxes, though. I did. I was bad about that.
00:09:26
Speaker 3: When we first went on our first getaway together, I was reading a book. And you went straight to the last two pages of my book and read the ending.
00:09:35
Speaker 1: You knew I wasn't going to finish the book. What was his name? His name started with an A. What was that book, that series? Angus. Was it Angus? Is that his name? Arthur. August.
00:09:43
Speaker 3: What was it? Atlas.
00:09:45
Speaker 1: Damn.
00:09:46
Speaker 3: It was a Colleen Hoover book.
00:09:48
Speaker 1: Everyone knows it, I'm sure. Colleen Hoover and Edith Warren are my favorites.
00:09:52
Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
00:09:53
Speaker 1: And the other one. Was it Judith?
00:09:55
Speaker 3: No, it's Jane Austen.
00:09:57
Speaker 1: Jane Austen, yes. Oh, my goodness.
00:10:00
Speaker 3: All right, when we come back, we're going to tell you what the audience had to say about Significant Other, and we'll also tell you where you can watch it and why we guarantee it's a Halloween hit. Welcome back, everyone, to Amy and TJ. It is Saturday, and it is our Sci-Fi Saturday. We're at our number two recommendation as we count down to Halloween. And yes, it is Significant Other with our favorites, Micah Monroe and Jack Lacey. They carry this fun, twisty movie that the critics loved and audiences liked. But I actually thought Chris H. put it so well when he left his review. And he was acknowledging that it was a little bit of a lower audience score than I think a lot of us would have expected who loved this movie. He wrote, than it was. Honestly, it seems like the negative reviews were written by people who didn't even watch the movie because some people thought the, and I won't say what it is, were a plot twist despite being featured in the first 30 seconds of the film. Give this film a shot if you like sci-fi thriller mysteries. Because there is an opening shot and you forget about the opening shot. That is the truth. And then you get sucked into the film and you think you're watching a backpack horror movie. I....
00:11:43
Speaker 2: Robes, a sci-fi horror fan, you can talk about specifics. You have to be like this genre or not. Robes, these two actors, talk about this all the time. If you had two different actors or not as good a quality actors, this wouldn't be the movie that it is.
00:11:59
Speaker 3: That's so true.
00:12:00
Speaker 1: He is wonderful in this movie. I love him in this movie.
00:12:05
Speaker 2: And she, that we usually follow along with, and we love her in so much stuff she does, she does have this She's, yeah, we call her Scream Queen, and she has a horror, she has a higher level, she's not the type that's running through the forest getting chased by a guy. She's doing some kind of cerebral battle, usually. And she's, once again, she seems vulnerable the whole movie, almost. And we don't realize the whole movie, no, no, no, no, no. She's actually fooling all of us.
00:12:37
Speaker 1: She's good.
00:12:38
Speaker 3: She's good.
00:12:39
Speaker 1: We don't know that. She's a wonderful actress. She, oh.
00:12:43
Speaker 2: These two, I cannot say enough about how hard it is for two people. How many other people are in this movie? I remember two others, maybe.
00:12:49
Speaker 3: There's two others, and there might be some like, yeah, pretty much the only other.
00:12:53
Speaker 1: They were there a hot second.
00:12:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, and they have a very quick speaking part. So for the most part, by and large, for an hour and 24 minutes, you are only watching those two play off each other.
00:13:03
Speaker 1: And that's talent. That's special, and this is a great movie. What was this one out in theaters? What did you say?
00:13:11
Speaker 3: This one was out in theaters October of 2022. I didn't see how well it did, but it's a cult classic. Now, people love this movie. It comes on and off different streaming services, but right now it's on Paramount +, which is, of course, an add-on I have to Amazon Prime. So we watched it on Prime. Fandango, you can rent it as well. But this... I actually feel like, too, with this movie, this is for everybody. Like, you could have all ages watch this movie because it's not a gore fest. I mean... And it's twisty enough where.
00:13:43
Speaker 1: I.
00:13:46
Speaker 3: Don't know... I don't think it would scare, like, younger kids. Like, if you have, like, 10, 11, 12, 13, I feel like they could handle this. They might... If you camp a lot, maybe not.
00:13:56
Speaker 2: Well, you know, I don't know if there's enough action in it to hold the attention of a 12 or 13 year old.
00:14:01
Speaker 1: You have to pay attention.
00:14:02
Speaker 2: It's a different type of, again, as a relationship story that's happening here, like a pretty intense one.
00:14:07
Speaker 1: That's true. That's taking place.
00:14:09
Speaker 3: It's a good date movie, I think. It is.
00:14:12
Speaker 1: I think it's a.
00:14:12
Speaker 3: Great day movie.
00:14:13
Speaker 2: It's great, and it will have you questioning your mate at the end of it.
00:14:18
Speaker 3: Yes, it's clever. It's fun. We love the twist. We love the acting and the actors, and just it's a fun film, and this is one. Not all films are like this that you could watch again and again because it's not so intense. It's almost like a palate cleanser.
00:14:33
Speaker 1: It's fun.
00:14:34
Speaker 3: And you know what you're getting, and you can keep on watching it. So please, everyone, check out Significant Other. It is our number two in our Sci-Fi Saturday. We have our number one film coming up in just a bit.
00:14:46
Speaker 2: As we talked it out, really, folks, I talked Roben into switching our number two and our number one recommended movie in this genre. You're going to hear the number one in a little bit, Robes. As we started talking about Significant Other, I said, maybe we should have left it at number one.
00:15:00
Speaker 3: But that's good. They're that good. They could have each been number one, but we will have our official number one. You probably haven't heard of it, too. That's the fun thing. This is going to be a little surprise, and it's going to be a gem of a movie that you're going to come back to time and time again. With that, everyone, we always appreciate you listening to us. I'm Amy Robach, alongside TJ Holmes. We'll talk soon.
