00:00:29.649 --> 00:00:34.049
A message entitled Powerful and Effective Prayer.
00:00:34.369 --> 00:00:41.570
Please read with me from James chapter 5, verse 16 through to verse 18.
00:00:41.810 --> 00:00:47.409
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other that you may be healed.
00:00:47.570 --> 00:00:51.570
The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
00:00:51.810 --> 00:00:54.609
Elijah was a human being, even as we are.
00:00:54.769 --> 00:01:00.049
He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it didn't rain on the land for three and a half years.
00:01:00.210 --> 00:01:06.530
Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
00:01:06.689 --> 00:01:09.329
Our prayer is powerful and effective.
00:01:09.569 --> 00:01:14.210
And it uses as a part of its example Elijah.
00:01:14.450 --> 00:01:22.530
And it's referring to his confrontation with King Ahab and the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
00:01:23.009 --> 00:01:29.890
Now let's just give a little bit of background to this story, and you could read it in 1 Kings chapter 18.
00:01:30.049 --> 00:01:31.409
Why don't you turn across there with me?
00:01:31.569 --> 00:01:42.290
1 Kings chapter 18 and uh and let's have a look together at this instance, what took place it at this time in history.
00:01:42.609 --> 00:01:44.609
King Ahab was an evil king.
00:01:44.769 --> 00:01:51.969
He married Jezebel, and they set up worship to Baal, who was a false god in Israel.
00:01:52.370 --> 00:02:03.810
As a result, God sent Elijah his prophet to say that he would pray that there would be a drought, no rain, no Jew for three and a half years.
00:02:04.450 --> 00:02:09.810
King Ahab and Jezebel killed people who served God.
00:02:09.969 --> 00:02:12.610
There was a great persecution that arose.
00:02:12.849 --> 00:02:26.449
And this culminated and resulted in a confrontation between Elijah, King Ahab, and the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel in front of the whole nation of Israel.
00:02:26.689 --> 00:02:32.530
Let's pick it up in 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 24.
00:02:32.769 --> 00:02:46.849
He says to King Ahab, this is Elijah talking to King Ahab, then you call on the name of your God, and I will call on the name of the Lord, the God who answers by fire, He is God.
00:02:47.330 --> 00:02:52.050
Then all the people said, What you say is good.
00:02:53.090 --> 00:02:58.289
Now the result was they both brought a sacrifice.
00:02:58.530 --> 00:03:09.569
And uh and we see from verse 20 to verse 29 that when the prophets of Baal brought their sacrifice and tried to call down fire, nothing happened.
00:03:09.729 --> 00:03:11.729
And Elijah begins to mock them.
00:03:11.889 --> 00:03:18.849
In fact, in verse 27 in the living Bible, it says, he says, Has your God gone to the toilet?
00:03:19.009 --> 00:03:20.129
He said, Where is your God?
00:03:20.210 --> 00:03:21.569
How come he's not answering?
00:03:21.729 --> 00:03:28.449
And they did all sorts of stuff to try and get their God to answer, that false God, Baal.
00:03:28.610 --> 00:03:37.330
And then we see Elijah offered a sacrifice, and the fire fell from heaven and consumed the sacrifice.
00:03:37.490 --> 00:03:40.930
And as a result, the people turned back to God.
00:03:41.169 --> 00:03:45.250
Let's look at verse 38 and verse 39.
00:03:45.650 --> 00:03:51.009
Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the soil.
00:03:51.169 --> 00:03:53.569
It also licked up the water in the trench.
00:03:53.729 --> 00:03:58.849
When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, The Lord He is God.
00:03:59.090 --> 00:04:01.889
The Lord He is God.
00:04:02.370 --> 00:04:05.250
This certainly was a powerful and effective prayer.
00:04:05.330 --> 00:04:07.569
It was a prayer that changed a nation.
00:04:07.810 --> 00:04:18.610
Now I'd like to look at four things from this event of what took place that will help us understand something about powerful and effective prayer.
00:04:19.009 --> 00:04:34.129
The first we have to understand is that we see in 1 Kings chapter 18, verse 22, that Elijah was outnumbered 450 to 1, but God was with him.
00:04:34.610 --> 00:04:41.409
In verse 22 it reads, Then Elijah said to them, I'm the only one of the Lord's prophets left.
00:04:41.490 --> 00:04:45.169
But Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
00:04:45.410 --> 00:04:48.370
Do you ever feel like the odds are stacked up against you?
00:04:48.529 --> 00:04:51.490
Do you ever feel like you're playing against a stacked deck?
00:04:51.649 --> 00:04:54.529
And uh and and you say, Well, is there any hope?
00:04:54.689 --> 00:04:57.250
It seems hopeless in the natural.
00:04:57.490 --> 00:05:02.850
Well, we have to understand that we have confidence that if God is with us, who can be against us?
00:05:03.089 --> 00:05:05.490
You might be facing impossible odds.
00:05:05.649 --> 00:05:09.170
But if God is with you, who can be against you?
00:05:09.329 --> 00:05:16.930
I love the way Jesus said in Mark chapter 10, verse 27, with man this is impossible, but not with God.
00:05:17.170 --> 00:05:20.689
With God all things are possible.
00:05:21.009 --> 00:05:31.490
And we have to understand that even though Elijah was outnumbered 450 to 1, he was actually the majority because it was Elijah with God on his side.
00:05:31.649 --> 00:05:47.329
And you might feel like you're on your own, you might feel like you're isolated, you're a long way from other people, you might feel like I'm working hard and getting nowhere, but I want to tell you if God is with you, you can have confidence that uh that you can overcome.
00:05:47.730 --> 00:05:54.370
The second thing we see is Elijah started to make preparations by rebuilding the altar.
00:05:54.610 --> 00:05:59.009
Let's read verse 30 through to verse 32.
00:05:59.490 --> 00:06:04.850
It says in verse 30, then Elijah said to all the people, Come here to me.
00:06:05.250 --> 00:06:10.129
They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
00:06:10.290 --> 00:06:20.850
Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, Your name shall be Israel.
00:06:21.009 --> 00:06:26.370
With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord.
00:06:26.610 --> 00:06:34.850
Building an altar is symbolic of us starting to have a daily devotion time with the Lord.
00:06:35.089 --> 00:06:45.410
Build that altar in your life, a place of meeting with God, a time and a place where you spend time with the Lord.
00:06:45.649 --> 00:06:57.329
If you're not spending time with God yourself, if you're not spending time with him and in his word and in prayer, it's very difficult for you to actually minister effectively to others.
00:06:57.569 --> 00:07:03.009
In John 15, verse 4 and 5, Jesus said, Apart from me you can do nothing.
00:07:03.170 --> 00:07:11.970
And then in verse 8 and verse 16 of John 15, he says, He says that He's called us and appointed us to bear much and lasting fruit.
00:07:12.129 --> 00:07:17.009
Now we can have a fruitful ministry if we have an altar in our lives.
00:07:17.329 --> 00:07:21.730
Times of refreshing come from the presence of the Lord.
00:07:21.889 --> 00:07:27.970
And I want to encourage you, spend time in his presence, come out of that time in his presence and begin to minister to others.
00:07:28.129 --> 00:07:33.170
Our ministry is simply an overflow of our relationship with God.
00:07:33.410 --> 00:07:39.250
The third thing we see is Elijah prayed and gave generously to God.
00:07:39.410 --> 00:07:43.649
Let's read in verse 32 through to verse 35.
00:07:44.129 --> 00:07:49.170
In verse 32, it says, With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord.
00:07:49.410 --> 00:07:55.170
He dug a trench around it, large enough to hold two sealers of seed.
00:07:55.329 --> 00:08:07.649
He arranged the wood, he cut the bull into pieces, laid it on the wood, and then he said to them, Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.
00:08:07.810 --> 00:08:13.329
Isn't it interesting, just to pause there, that he said, Fill these jars with water.
00:08:13.569 --> 00:08:18.050
Now they had just come out of a season of three and a half years of drought.
00:08:18.290 --> 00:08:22.930
So possibly the most precious commodity they had was water.
00:08:23.089 --> 00:08:27.569
But he said, Pour four large jars on the sacrifice.
00:08:27.889 --> 00:08:31.170
Continues in verse 34 and verse 35, he says, Do it again.
00:08:31.410 --> 00:08:32.210
They did it again.
00:08:32.370 --> 00:08:35.329
Do it a third time, he ordered, and they did it a third time.
00:08:35.490 --> 00:08:40.529
The water ran down from the altar and even filled the trench.
00:08:41.009 --> 00:08:48.370
Now we need to understand that two things get God's attention prayer and generosity.
00:08:48.529 --> 00:08:52.529
They use twelve jars of water during a time of drought.
00:08:52.769 --> 00:08:59.250
And when we come to God with generous hearts and generous hands, it's amazing what God can do.
00:08:59.649 --> 00:09:06.129
In Acts chapter 10 and verse 4, we read about Cornelius, the first Gentile believer.
00:09:06.370 --> 00:09:10.129
And what got God's attention about Cornelius?
00:09:10.210 --> 00:09:14.370
It was his generosity and his devotion to God.
00:09:14.529 --> 00:09:19.330
It says that he prayed and he gave alms, he gave gifts.
00:09:19.649 --> 00:09:27.970
Because he was generous hearted, he got God's attention, and he was chosen as the first Gentile believer.
00:09:28.370 --> 00:09:29.889
We want to see God move in our lives.
00:09:30.049 --> 00:09:49.090
If we want to see our prayer and we want to see our our uh our the the effect of our ministry being powerful and effective and changing things around us, then I want to encourage you to be generous-hearted and be generous with your hands, with your time, with your talents, with the resources that God has given you.
00:09:49.330 --> 00:09:56.529
And finally, the fourth thing that we see is Elijah prayed until he had a breakthrough.
00:09:56.690 --> 00:09:59.970
Now he did all of this, and uh God answered by fire.
00:10:00.049 --> 00:10:04.129
And then let's go down to verse 41 and read through to verse 45.
00:10:04.450 --> 00:10:10.450
And Elijah said to Ahab, Go eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.
00:10:10.610 --> 00:10:19.009
So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed up on the top of Mount Carmel, bent down to the ground, and put his face between his knees.
00:10:19.169 --> 00:10:21.730
He got himself in a posture of prayer.
00:10:21.970 --> 00:10:24.370
Go and look towards the sea, he told his servant.
00:10:24.529 --> 00:10:25.649
He went up and looked.
00:10:25.809 --> 00:10:26.769
There's nothing there.
00:10:26.929 --> 00:10:29.009
Seven times Elijah said, Go back.
00:10:29.169 --> 00:10:35.169
The seventh time the servant reported, A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea.
00:10:35.330 --> 00:10:40.370
So Elijah said, Go and tell Ahab, Hitch up your chariot, go down before the rain stops you.
00:10:40.610 --> 00:10:49.090
Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, and a heavy rain started to fall, and Ahab rode off.
00:10:49.330 --> 00:10:52.850
Persistence makes a difference in prayer.
00:10:53.090 --> 00:10:57.570
Elijah prayed until he had a breakthrough.
00:11:00.929 --> 00:11:03.809
He didn't just pray once, it says he prayed seven times.
00:11:04.049 --> 00:11:06.370
Let's not have the attitude, well, I tried that once.
00:11:06.529 --> 00:11:13.090
Jesus said in Luke chapter 18 and uh verse 1, he said we should pray and never give up.
00:11:13.250 --> 00:11:17.889
Uh pray without ceasing, the Bible says in 2 Thessalonians.
00:11:18.049 --> 00:11:23.169
It says, pray without ceasing, keep on praying, pray until something happens.
00:11:23.409 --> 00:11:25.970
He wasn't discouraged by the small changes.
00:11:26.129 --> 00:11:32.210
When his servant came back and said, I just see the a cloud the size of a man's hand, he didn't say, Oh, well, what's the point?
00:11:32.450 --> 00:11:33.570
Let me just give up.
00:11:33.730 --> 00:11:38.769
No, he continued to pray, and we need to keep praying until we see a breakthrough.
00:11:38.929 --> 00:11:42.929
So today we've been talking about powerful and effective prayer.
00:11:43.169 --> 00:11:47.970
And my encouragement to you is to pray and not give up.
00:11:48.210 --> 00:11:55.409
You might feel like you're outnumbered, you might feel like the odds are stacked against you, you might be facing an impossible situation.
00:11:55.570 --> 00:12:01.330
Well, I want to tell you today that in situations like that, God delights to use ordinary people.
00:12:01.570 --> 00:12:07.250
We saw James chapter 5 and verse 17, it says, Elijah was a man just like us.
00:12:07.490 --> 00:12:13.970
God loves to use ordinary people in extraordinary ways in uh in impossible situations.
00:12:14.129 --> 00:12:16.210
That's the recipe for God to come through.
00:12:16.370 --> 00:12:19.250
And intervention by God in the ordinary course of nature.
00:12:19.330 --> 00:12:22.690
That's what God wants to do in your life, in your situation.
00:12:22.850 --> 00:12:28.690
He made preparations, he made sure he was getting the basics right, he built the altar in his life.
00:12:28.850 --> 00:12:30.129
Why don't you start doing that?
00:12:30.289 --> 00:12:41.809
Why don't you start building the altar in your life, making sure that you're building a strong foundation, spending time in the word, spending time in worship, spending time in prayer, getting the basics right?
00:12:41.970 --> 00:12:44.929
He gave sacrificially, he took what was precious to him.
00:12:45.169 --> 00:12:49.009
You know, if you're a busy person, time might be your most precious commodity.
00:12:49.169 --> 00:12:52.289
Why don't you start to invest more time in the kingdom?
00:12:52.450 --> 00:13:02.370
As you begin to pour that out in service to the Lord, you'll be amazed at how God can multiply that and how he can use that in order to uh to do amazing things.
00:13:02.529 --> 00:13:03.649
Finally, don't give up.
00:13:03.889 --> 00:13:07.409
Keep praying until you see a breakthrough.
00:13:07.809 --> 00:13:12.129
Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you use ordinary people like us.
00:13:13.090 --> 00:13:15.490
Ordinary people in extraordinary ways.
00:13:15.970 --> 00:13:21.169
We want to see you use us powerfully and effectively.
00:13:21.490 --> 00:13:28.929
Our prayer, our lives, the way we live to influence and affect people around us.
00:13:29.570 --> 00:13:31.490
Thank you for what you're doing in our lives.
00:13:31.649 --> 00:13:33.490
And we trust you, Lord, for more.
00:13:33.730 --> 00:13:34.929
In Jesus' name.
00:13:35.649 --> 00:13:36.289
Amen.
00:00:29.649 --> 00:00:34.049
A message entitled Powerful and Effective Prayer.
00:00:34.369 --> 00:00:41.570
Please read with me from James chapter 5, verse 16 through to verse 18.
00:00:41.810 --> 00:00:47.409
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other that you may be healed.
00:00:47.570 --> 00:00:51.570
The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
00:00:51.810 --> 00:00:54.609
Elijah was a human being, even as we are.
00:00:54.769 --> 00:01:00.049
He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it didn't rain on the land for three and a half years.
00:01:00.210 --> 00:01:06.530
Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
00:01:06.689 --> 00:01:09.329
Our prayer is powerful and effective.
00:01:09.569 --> 00:01:14.210
And it uses as a part of its example Elijah.
00:01:14.450 --> 00:01:22.530
And it's referring to his confrontation with King Ahab and the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
00:01:23.009 --> 00:01:29.890
Now let's just give a little bit of background to this story, and you could read it in 1 Kings chapter 18.
00:01:30.049 --> 00:01:31.409
Why don't you turn across there with me?
00:01:31.569 --> 00:01:42.290
1 Kings chapter 18 and uh and let's have a look together at this instance, what took place it at this time in history.
00:01:42.609 --> 00:01:44.609
King Ahab was an evil king.
00:01:44.769 --> 00:01:51.969
He married Jezebel, and they set up worship to Baal, who was a false god in Israel.
00:01:52.370 --> 00:02:03.810
As a result, God sent Elijah his prophet to say that he would pray that there would be a drought, no rain, no Jew for three and a half years.
00:02:04.450 --> 00:02:09.810
King Ahab and Jezebel killed people who served God.
00:02:09.969 --> 00:02:12.610
There was a great persecution that arose.
00:02:12.849 --> 00:02:26.449
And this culminated and resulted in a confrontation between Elijah, King Ahab, and the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel in front of the whole nation of Israel.
00:02:26.689 --> 00:02:32.530
Let's pick it up in 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 24.
00:02:32.769 --> 00:02:46.849
He says to King Ahab, this is Elijah talking to King Ahab, then you call on the name of your God, and I will call on the name of the Lord, the God who answers by fire, He is God.
00:02:47.330 --> 00:02:52.050
Then all the people said, What you say is good.
00:02:53.090 --> 00:02:58.289
Now the result was they both brought a sacrifice.
00:02:58.530 --> 00:03:09.569
And uh and we see from verse 20 to verse 29 that when the prophets of Baal brought their sacrifice and tried to call down fire, nothing happened.
00:03:09.729 --> 00:03:11.729
And Elijah begins to mock them.
00:03:11.889 --> 00:03:18.849
In fact, in verse 27 in the living Bible, it says, he says, Has your God gone to the toilet?
00:03:19.009 --> 00:03:20.129
He said, Where is your God?
00:03:20.210 --> 00:03:21.569
How come he's not answering?
00:03:21.729 --> 00:03:28.449
And they did all sorts of stuff to try and get their God to answer, that false God, Baal.
00:03:28.610 --> 00:03:37.330
And then we see Elijah offered a sacrifice, and the fire fell from heaven and consumed the sacrifice.
00:03:37.490 --> 00:03:40.930
And as a result, the people turned back to God.
00:03:41.169 --> 00:03:45.250
Let's look at verse 38 and verse 39.
00:03:45.650 --> 00:03:51.009
Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the soil.
00:03:51.169 --> 00:03:53.569
It also licked up the water in the trench.
00:03:53.729 --> 00:03:58.849
When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, The Lord He is God.
00:03:59.090 --> 00:04:01.889
The Lord He is God.
00:04:02.370 --> 00:04:05.250
This certainly was a powerful and effective prayer.
00:04:05.330 --> 00:04:07.569
It was a prayer that changed a nation.
00:04:07.810 --> 00:04:18.610
Now I'd like to look at four things from this event of what took place that will help us understand something about powerful and effective prayer.
00:04:19.009 --> 00:04:34.129
The first we have to understand is that we see in 1 Kings chapter 18, verse 22, that Elijah was outnumbered 450 to 1, but God was with him.
00:04:34.610 --> 00:04:41.409
In verse 22 it reads, Then Elijah said to them, I'm the only one of the Lord's prophets left.
00:04:41.490 --> 00:04:45.169
But Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
00:04:45.410 --> 00:04:48.370
Do you ever feel like the odds are stacked up against you?
00:04:48.529 --> 00:04:51.490
Do you ever feel like you're playing against a stacked deck?
00:04:51.649 --> 00:04:54.529
And uh and and you say, Well, is there any hope?
00:04:54.689 --> 00:04:57.250
It seems hopeless in the natural.
00:04:57.490 --> 00:05:02.850
Well, we have to understand that we have confidence that if God is with us, who can be against us?
00:05:03.089 --> 00:05:05.490
You might be facing impossible odds.
00:05:05.649 --> 00:05:09.170
But if God is with you, who can be against you?
00:05:09.329 --> 00:05:16.930
I love the way Jesus said in Mark chapter 10, verse 27, with man this is impossible, but not with God.
00:05:17.170 --> 00:05:20.689
With God all things are possible.
00:05:21.009 --> 00:05:31.490
And we have to understand that even though Elijah was outnumbered 450 to 1, he was actually the majority because it was Elijah with God on his side.
00:05:31.649 --> 00:05:47.329
And you might feel like you're on your own, you might feel like you're isolated, you're a long way from other people, you might feel like I'm working hard and getting nowhere, but I want to tell you if God is with you, you can have confidence that uh that you can overcome.
00:05:47.730 --> 00:05:54.370
The second thing we see is Elijah started to make preparations by rebuilding the altar.
00:05:54.610 --> 00:05:59.009
Let's read verse 30 through to verse 32.
00:05:59.490 --> 00:06:04.850
It says in verse 30, then Elijah said to all the people, Come here to me.
00:06:05.250 --> 00:06:10.129
They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
00:06:10.290 --> 00:06:20.850
Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, Your name shall be Israel.
00:06:21.009 --> 00:06:26.370
With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord.
00:06:26.610 --> 00:06:34.850
Building an altar is symbolic of us starting to have a daily devotion time with the Lord.
00:06:35.089 --> 00:06:45.410
Build that altar in your life, a place of meeting with God, a time and a place where you spend time with the Lord.
00:06:45.649 --> 00:06:57.329
If you're not spending time with God yourself, if you're not spending time with him and in his word and in prayer, it's very difficult for you to actually minister effectively to others.
00:06:57.569 --> 00:07:03.009
In John 15, verse 4 and 5, Jesus said, Apart from me you can do nothing.
00:07:03.170 --> 00:07:11.970
And then in verse 8 and verse 16 of John 15, he says, He says that He's called us and appointed us to bear much and lasting fruit.
00:07:12.129 --> 00:07:17.009
Now we can have a fruitful ministry if we have an altar in our lives.
00:07:17.329 --> 00:07:21.730
Times of refreshing come from the presence of the Lord.
00:07:21.889 --> 00:07:27.970
And I want to encourage you, spend time in his presence, come out of that time in his presence and begin to minister to others.
00:07:28.129 --> 00:07:33.170
Our ministry is simply an overflow of our relationship with God.
00:07:33.410 --> 00:07:39.250
The third thing we see is Elijah prayed and gave generously to God.
00:07:39.410 --> 00:07:43.649
Let's read in verse 32 through to verse 35.
00:07:44.129 --> 00:07:49.170
In verse 32, it says, With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord.
00:07:49.410 --> 00:07:55.170
He dug a trench around it, large enough to hold two sealers of seed.
00:07:55.329 --> 00:08:07.649
He arranged the wood, he cut the bull into pieces, laid it on the wood, and then he said to them, Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.
00:08:07.810 --> 00:08:13.329
Isn't it interesting, just to pause there, that he said, Fill these jars with water.
00:08:13.569 --> 00:08:18.050
Now they had just come out of a season of three and a half years of drought.
00:08:18.290 --> 00:08:22.930
So possibly the most precious commodity they had was water.
00:08:23.089 --> 00:08:27.569
But he said, Pour four large jars on the sacrifice.
00:08:27.889 --> 00:08:31.170
Continues in verse 34 and verse 35, he says, Do it again.
00:08:31.410 --> 00:08:32.210
They did it again.
00:08:32.370 --> 00:08:35.329
Do it a third time, he ordered, and they did it a third time.
00:08:35.490 --> 00:08:40.529
The water ran down from the altar and even filled the trench.
00:08:41.009 --> 00:08:48.370
Now we need to understand that two things get God's attention prayer and generosity.
00:08:48.529 --> 00:08:52.529
They use twelve jars of water during a time of drought.
00:08:52.769 --> 00:08:59.250
And when we come to God with generous hearts and generous hands, it's amazing what God can do.
00:08:59.649 --> 00:09:06.129
In Acts chapter 10 and verse 4, we read about Cornelius, the first Gentile believer.
00:09:06.370 --> 00:09:10.129
And what got God's attention about Cornelius?
00:09:10.210 --> 00:09:14.370
It was his generosity and his devotion to God.
00:09:14.529 --> 00:09:19.330
It says that he prayed and he gave alms, he gave gifts.
00:09:19.649 --> 00:09:27.970
Because he was generous hearted, he got God's attention, and he was chosen as the first Gentile believer.
00:09:28.370 --> 00:09:29.889
We want to see God move in our lives.
00:09:30.049 --> 00:09:49.090
If we want to see our prayer and we want to see our our uh our the the effect of our ministry being powerful and effective and changing things around us, then I want to encourage you to be generous-hearted and be generous with your hands, with your time, with your talents, with the resources that God has given you.
00:09:49.330 --> 00:09:56.529
And finally, the fourth thing that we see is Elijah prayed until he had a breakthrough.
00:09:56.690 --> 00:09:59.970
Now he did all of this, and uh God answered by fire.
00:10:00.049 --> 00:10:04.129
And then let's go down to verse 41 and read through to verse 45.
00:10:04.450 --> 00:10:10.450
And Elijah said to Ahab, Go eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.
00:10:10.610 --> 00:10:19.009
So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed up on the top of Mount Carmel, bent down to the ground, and put his face between his knees.
00:10:19.169 --> 00:10:21.730
He got himself in a posture of prayer.
00:10:21.970 --> 00:10:24.370
Go and look towards the sea, he told his servant.
00:10:24.529 --> 00:10:25.649
He went up and looked.
00:10:25.809 --> 00:10:26.769
There's nothing there.
00:10:26.929 --> 00:10:29.009
Seven times Elijah said, Go back.
00:10:29.169 --> 00:10:35.169
The seventh time the servant reported, A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea.
00:10:35.330 --> 00:10:40.370
So Elijah said, Go and tell Ahab, Hitch up your chariot, go down before the rain stops you.
00:10:40.610 --> 00:10:49.090
Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, and a heavy rain started to fall, and Ahab rode off.
00:10:49.330 --> 00:10:52.850
Persistence makes a difference in prayer.
00:10:53.090 --> 00:10:57.570
Elijah prayed until he had a breakthrough.
00:11:00.929 --> 00:11:03.809
He didn't just pray once, it says he prayed seven times.
00:11:04.049 --> 00:11:06.370
Let's not have the attitude, well, I tried that once.
00:11:06.529 --> 00:11:13.090
Jesus said in Luke chapter 18 and uh verse 1, he said we should pray and never give up.
00:11:13.250 --> 00:11:17.889
Uh pray without ceasing, the Bible says in 2 Thessalonians.
00:11:18.049 --> 00:11:23.169
It says, pray without ceasing, keep on praying, pray until something happens.
00:11:23.409 --> 00:11:25.970
He wasn't discouraged by the small changes.
00:11:26.129 --> 00:11:32.210
When his servant came back and said, I just see the a cloud the size of a man's hand, he didn't say, Oh, well, what's the point?
00:11:32.450 --> 00:11:33.570
Let me just give up.
00:11:33.730 --> 00:11:38.769
No, he continued to pray, and we need to keep praying until we see a breakthrough.
00:11:38.929 --> 00:11:42.929
So today we've been talking about powerful and effective prayer.
00:11:43.169 --> 00:11:47.970
And my encouragement to you is to pray and not give up.
00:11:48.210 --> 00:11:55.409
You might feel like you're outnumbered, you might feel like the odds are stacked against you, you might be facing an impossible situation.
00:11:55.570 --> 00:12:01.330
Well, I want to tell you today that in situations like that, God delights to use ordinary people.
00:12:01.570 --> 00:12:07.250
We saw James chapter 5 and verse 17, it says, Elijah was a man just like us.
00:12:07.490 --> 00:12:13.970
God loves to use ordinary people in extraordinary ways in uh in impossible situations.
00:12:14.129 --> 00:12:16.210
That's the recipe for God to come through.
00:12:16.370 --> 00:12:19.250
And intervention by God in the ordinary course of nature.
00:12:19.330 --> 00:12:22.690
That's what God wants to do in your life, in your situation.
00:12:22.850 --> 00:12:28.690
He made preparations, he made sure he was getting the basics right, he built the altar in his life.
00:12:28.850 --> 00:12:30.129
Why don't you start doing that?
00:12:30.289 --> 00:12:41.809
Why don't you start building the altar in your life, making sure that you're building a strong foundation, spending time in the word, spending time in worship, spending time in prayer, getting the basics right?
00:12:41.970 --> 00:12:44.929
He gave sacrificially, he took what was precious to him.
00:12:45.169 --> 00:12:49.009
You know, if you're a busy person, time might be your most precious commodity.
00:12:49.169 --> 00:12:52.289
Why don't you start to invest more time in the kingdom?
00:12:52.450 --> 00:13:02.370
As you begin to pour that out in service to the Lord, you'll be amazed at how God can multiply that and how he can use that in order to uh to do amazing things.
00:13:02.529 --> 00:13:03.649
Finally, don't give up.
00:13:03.889 --> 00:13:07.409
Keep praying until you see a breakthrough.
00:13:07.809 --> 00:13:12.129
Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you use ordinary people like us.
00:13:13.090 --> 00:13:15.490
Ordinary people in extraordinary ways.
00:13:15.970 --> 00:13:21.169
We want to see you use us powerfully and effectively.
00:13:21.490 --> 00:13:28.929
Our prayer, our lives, the way we live to influence and affect people around us.
00:13:29.570 --> 00:13:31.490
Thank you for what you're doing in our lives.
00:13:31.649 --> 00:13:33.490
And we trust you, Lord, for more.
00:13:33.730 --> 00:13:34.929
In Jesus' name.
00:13:35.649 --> 00:13:36.289
Amen.
